You will find many interesting articles and pieces of advice throughout this issue but in particular during this time of year, we should be aware of what damage too much unprotected sun can do to our skin. On page 16 you will find some useful advice provided by Medicare and written by an expert. The beautiful Italian singer, Consuelo Lallai graces our front cover. You can read more about her upcoming performances along the coast on page 27. We should also not forget how to take care of our pets

KEY HEALTH Whitening: 3 Things to Know

About Getting a Brighter Smile

By Dr Belinda Pamos

Why Did My Teeth Change Colour? Over time, your teeth can go from white to not-so-bright for a number of reasons:

What Are My Whitening Options? Talk to your dentist before starting. If you are a candidate, there are three ways to put the shine back in your smile:

Food and Drink Tobacco Use Trauma Medications Or maybe your natural colour is a bit too yellow!

In-Office Bleaching This procedure is called chair-side bleaching and usually requires only one office visit. The dentist will apply either a protective gel to your gums or a rubber shield to protect your gums. Bleach is then applied to the teeth. A special light or laser might be used to enhance the action of the whitening agent.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work? Tooth whitening is a simple process. Whitening products contain one of two tooth bleaches (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide). These bleaches break stains into smaller pieces, which makes the colour less concentrated and your teeth brighter.

At-Home Bleaching Peroxide-containing whiteners actually bleach the tooth enamel. They typically come in a gel and are placed in a tray that fits on your teeth. You may also use a whitening strip that sticks to your teeth. The concentration of the bleaching agent is lower than what your dentist would use in the office.

KEY HEALTH Stay Smart during the Sugar Crisis With hidden sugars hitting the headlines recently it is no surprise that a recent survey found that three quarters of us want to cut down on our sugar intake. How much sugar should you consume? The World Health Organisation advises that the average adult should limit their sugar consumption to a maximum of 5% of their daily calories (around 6 teaspoons) however many people get 30% of their daily calories from sugar – far more than the recommended levels. Why are blood sugar levels important? A frequently high intake of dietary sugar can be very damaging to our health and increases the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and even cancer. A recent survey shows that *47% of us have never had our blood sugar levels tested so without taking regular blood tests how do you know if you have high blood sugar? If you experience energy slumps; cravings for sugary foods or have a diet high in processed foods, this could be you.

By Pharmanord

mass, you increase your body’s ability to use energy from food and reduce fat. 5. Sleep and de-stress – Tiredness can tempt us to use sugar for extra energy 6. Swap small things in your diet – For example eating more whole grains such as brown rice can help to sustain energy levels and leave us feeling fuller for longer or swap high sugar drinks for water. 7. Use a supplement – Pharma Nord’s Bio-Gluco control contains both Delphinol and ChromoPrecise which can help reduce cravings for sugary treats, avoid energy highs and lows, prolong time between hunger pangs, prevent fatigue and help maintain a healthy weight. Visit www.bloodsugarcontrol.info for more information *Findings are from a Pharma Nord survey, compiled with 547 respondents

Help your body process sugar If you want to take more control over your blood sugar levels there are natural substances which can help, for example the mineral chromium works with insulin to move glucose out of the bloodstream and into cells where it can be used as energy. Very little chromium is found in the modern diet and that which is available is easily depleted during cooking, so you may want to consider a chromium supplement. The organic chromium yeast ChromoPrecise has been shown to be 10x more easily absorbed by the body than any other kind of chromium. Delphinol, an extract from the Chilean maqui berry is the only naturally occurring substance thought to slow the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream from both simple sugars such as sucrose and complex starch carbohydrates. Delphinol can help avoid sharp spikes in blood glucose levels. Tips for controlling your blood sugar: 1. Check the sugar content on your foods 2. Be aware of the different names and types of sugars on ingredients labels: Including sucrose, glucose, fructose or molasses. 3. Cut back: Research shows that *77% of us consume sugary foods even when we are not hungry. 4. Get physical – Exercise improves your insulin sensitivity, which helps with blood sugar levels. KEY HEALTH It’s all about Genie

By Anne Stark

Would you like to have a personal trainer for your face? If the answer is yes, the leading neurophysiologist, Dr Baxendale, has developed the mediwave technology which allows us to safely exercise the facial muscles. Don’t be fooled by imitations. Only Genie Take Ten uses wave form up to 1,000 times stronger than anything else on the market. With exercise, sagging facial muscles return to their former position, increase in size, lift the features, reduce lines and wrinkles. The result – a younger, healthier appearance. Results are visible after the first session. On a much more serious note, people with Bells Palsy, or with a big difference in each half of their face from birth, this wave form was originally designed to help people with these problems. If you cannot eat properly and when you drink, it spills out of the corner of your mouth, this is very embarrassing and may make people with this problem even avoid going out in public. You will see my friend, Marijke, pictured above, especially her mouth. She had a stroke 10 years ago - the difference is amazing! I have now worked with Genie for more than 5 years and I still find it amazing and would classify it as the best non-invasive lifting treatment. If you would like to enhance your appearance and look younger, please get in touch. Genie is not all about the face. You can also have slimming, toning and cellulite reduction for the body. Genie is not just for women either as there is also a specific programme for men to build up muscle mass. A 20-minute treatment on the stomach is equivalent to 360 sit ups. You are welcome to call in for a trial treatment. People whose body is in continuous pain should have a massage with a good therapist. My Finnish massage is my passion and thankfully so many of my clients agree. It is something special. I have special discounted offer packages if you pay for 3 treatments. NEW Thesotherapy with Dermapen using the product MDTissue, has active ingredients of collagen, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), magnesium gluconate, riboflavin vitamin B2 and vitamin B1 thiamine. Treatment is to help with skin texture, firm and minimise your lines, and can also be used on the body for stretch marks and scars. It is recommended before and after laser, dermoabrasion, threads, lightening the skin, botox and chemical peels. I welcome you to sample my “Get Results” facials. I hope you will find them excellent as so many others do and I will do my best to improve on them by continuous training. Requests for new treatments will ensure you experience the pleasure of receiving a facial or any other of my treatments.

KEY HEALTH Deep Oscillation Therapy

By Patricia Kaines

Deep Oscillation therapy began in the 1980’s when physiotherapists Hans Seidl and Wolfgang Walder began work in The Municipal Hospital in Amberg, Germany. Working in close collaboration with Physiomed Elektromedizin AG, the leading producers of high-quality innovative physical therapy equipment, their combined hard work was rewarded in 1988 when Physiomed was granted the patent for Deep Oscillation. This therapy, in a range of products, is now exported to over 80 countries worldwide for use in Sports Rehabilitation, aesthetics and clinical environments. Deep Oscillation has effects in skin, connective tissue, subcutaneous fatty tissue, muscle, blood and lymph vessels. It provides an electrostatic deep tissue massage applied ‘hands on’ through vinyl gloves, gently travelling through a depth of 8-12 cms through all the body’s tissue layers. Deep Oscillation has clinically proven effects in pain reduction, bruising, inflammation and swelling, improving trophicity and quality of tissue and encouraging wounds to heal at a faster rate.

Deep Oscillation Hivamat 200 arrived in the UK in 2001 and has been successfully promoted by PhysioPod UK since 2006. It has also been endorsed by the NHS and can be found in many of its hospitals and clinics around the UK. I was introduced to the Hivamat 200 Deep Oscillation unit in 2011 whilst attending my biennial Manual Lymphatic Drainage review in the UK. On my return to Spain I decided to do a thorough research of the subject and I was so impressed with what I learnt that I decided to purchase a unit. Over the years I have had a lot of success using the Deep Oscillation therapy unit. I have found how versatile it is, not only in conjunction with Manual Lymphatic Drainage, but also for pain relief, pre and post surgery including aesthetic surgery, sports injuries, facial treatments, cellulite reduction, arthritis - the list is endless. KEY HEALTH Prepare Yourself For The Summer Sun... Become Mole Aware!

Provided by Medicare

Enjoying the sun and the warm temperatures that we are lucky enough to experience here on the coast mean that we have to take extra precautions to protect our skin. Living in the south of Spain, we have to ensure that our raised exposure to the sunlight does not cause serious damages to our skin. Principally almost everybody has the posibility to develop a darker pigmentation to the skin, we get tanned after being in the sun, some more than others, this is related to our skin type. The skin pigmentation is our natural sun protection. The melanocytes, staying upon the basalmembran get stimulated by the UV-A and UV-B radiation, they produce more melanin (which is the colour) and with their “tentacles “ they are able to divide the melanin to the surrounding epidermal cells. The melanin is placed right above the nucleus and it works like a parasol, trying to avoid damage to your DNA. So it is easy to understand, that a person, who is not able to build up a strong pigmentation has a lesser natural protection against the UV-radiation. Apart from that homogen pigmentation of our skin almost everybody has some pigmented lesions, called birthmarks, moles, nevus, lentigines and so on. We could write a textbook on pigmented moles as it is difficult to explain and distinguish between the different types of pigmented moles, in a concise way. However, we wanted to give you some ideas/advice on how to look at any pigmented lesions you may have and how to act in a responsible way, in terms of checking these out and if necessary getting treatment. When we take a look at the benign pigmented moles, we find that nearly all of them are round or oval, in a symmetric aspect, they have a sharp and clear border, most of them are only one colour, their diameter (of each mole) is not more than 6mm and there is not any change to the thickness or size of the mole. All these parameters (mentioned above) are reflected in the ABCDE-rule, which is a very good method for you the reader to become more aware of any moles you may have: A: Asymmetry B: Border C: Colour D: Diameter E: Elevation and/or Enlargement Sometimes we can see moles with a different appearance: not symmetric, unsharp borders, many colours or larger than 6mm. These moles need to be examined. In these instances it means that the normal structure of the nevus has changed, the cells are showing irregular cell division. You can find that this can happen with a family history (“syndrome of dysplastic nevus”) but also without a family history. The dysplastic nevus is suspicious to be a precursor of a melanoma, so it should be removed by minor surgery and then sent away for analysis. In the last decade evidence shows a worldwide increase of melano-

16

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

ma. In the year 2000 the risk factor of melanomas was 1 in 75. The majority of the melanomas show an initial superficial spreading and in the second stage they grow deeper into the tissue. We can see a very important trend, the vertical thickness of the melanoma is a reliable marker for the risk of sending metastasis to the rest of the body. It is clear that early diagnosis is the most important thing and indeed, if we remove melanomas with less than 1 mm thickness (“low risk melanomas”) it has been found that the healing rate is up to 95% in patients. The key to all of this is that you are aware of any changes and that you follow the simple ABCDE guidelines (as detailed earlier). Remember that in the initial stages, skin cancer (melanomas) never have any symptoms such as pain or itching, they just grow. Here are some examples of pigmented tumours, for you to use with the ABCDE guide: Picture 1: Pigmented nodule: showing several colors, loss of structure. Suspicous to be a nodular melanoma or a pigmented basalioma. Picture 2: Superficial increased pigmented lesion: showing different colours, diffuse and curved margin, secundar development of a nodular part. Suspicious to be a superficial spreading melanoma with a secundar nodular part. Picture 3: Pigmented mole in a deep brown: showing a loss of pigmentation and structure in the middle. Curved spreading margin, suspicious to be a superficial spreading melanoma. Picture 4: Pigmented lesion with several colors: has a loss of structure and pigmentation, diffused margin, it is suspicous to be a initial melanoma developed on a dysplastic nevus. Before the summer sun and UV rays intensify, now is the perfect time to get any moles you may have checked out by your healthcare professional. KEY HEALTH Your First Visit to a Homeopathic Doctor It is quite normal to visit your GP from time to time. You are probably used to having periodic blood tests and then having a consultation thereafter to discuss the results with your doctor. This means that to some extent you are being viewed via a biochemical reflection, similar to a tasty soup, which only tastes good when all ingredients are added in the right proportions. However, this is just one aspect of you existence and obviously not the ruling one but rather the serving one. Let’s compare your first visit to a GP with your first visit with a homeopathic doctor. When we go to a doctor, it is normally for a specific reason – we very rarely make an appointment just to pass the time of day. We are usually either worried about something or are in pain and we want to share this with a professional to gain his reassurance, to soothe our pains and diseases or to get a cure.

By Dr. Robert Tadeusz Zawislak Zarzycki

wind? Draft of air? Is there any food which is harmful to you? What kind of food do you simply love eating? Is there any kind of food you cannot bear? What position do you sleep in? Do you dream at night? Are there any recurring dreams? Etc. All this leads to the path to ascertain your personal individuality, specific type or your reaction to any stressful situation, which induce conflicts and diseases. And all the answers make a difference. After that kind of meeting the patient and the doctor should hold the keys to prepare for healing. Private, appropriate keys which help human beings to still internal conflicts and heal from the inside out, from the level of the soul and mind to the level of the physical body. If you would like to find out more, please arrange to come and see me. My contact details and clinic hours are on this page.

You may be aware that homeopathy is an art and a science. The art gives the freedom of expression and the science gives the proven methodology, appropriate means of acting and predictable results based on them. So by visiting your homeopathic doctor you will want to learn something. For that reason your own story comes first. You are asked to tell the doctor the reason that brought you to him and why that is so important now. It takes time. Your free expression needs time to evolve. It is very important because suppressed expression is the root cause of any health problem. Your role during your first visit is to show your truth to your doctor, his role is to be aware of it - to find out what, where, when, which way, why, is there a link? And for this reason there are many questions that need to be asked during that meeting. These questions are intended to be general and open, not specific or suggestive. They are designed to lead the patient through different life situations, environmental states and body areas and functions in a way which jogs one’s memory and helps to describe everything creatively and truthfully. For instance: how do you usually feel yourself during the different seasons of the year? Have you recognised any time of the day or night in which you feel much better or much worse for no reason? How do you react to dampness? How do you react to wind? Cold wind? Warm

KEY HOLISTIC The Sun Throughout history and across all religions, the sun has always been symbolised as a life force of this universe. Thousands of years ago, many civilisations worshipped the sun because of its healing qualities. We’re aware how the sun provides us with the essential vitamin D. Though in certain countries it’s not so usual to see it every day, we all have access to the sun. When it does appear, go outside and enjoy a stroll. Stretch out your arms and ask the sun for its healing power. And please be careful and sensible; it is never wise to be out in the sun or to do the following exercises when the sun is at its hottest. I recommend either very early morning or late afternoon for sun-healing (and not sun-burning!) Sit towards the sun but do not look directly at it, as this will harm your eyes. Sitting comfortably, inhale through your nose and count to five as you breathe in the sun’s energy. Stop and hold your breath for another five seconds. Then release by exhaling out through your mouth, counting out five seconds again. Hold your breath for a further five seconds. Repeat this breathing exercise until you feel lighter. Imagine a powerful energy flowing directly from the sun into your heart. Allow that energy to spread throughout the whole of your body. As you continue to do this, you will find yourself at the point I call ‘ultimate energy’. This is a powerful and positive energy. At times, you may hold onto it and at other times, you can decide to send it back out to the world. Either way is perfect. When you carry this energy with you, it has a great effect also on those around you. This ultimate energy deserves ultimate healing thoughts. Anyone who comes to mind − family, loved ones, pets, anyone who may be going through a difficult and challenging time and indeed, anyone who may present a challenge to you − are all deserving of pure energy healing. My simple secret to sending this energy is to just see them happy; see them well; see them healed. Anyone suffering from a physical, mental or emotional issue – visualise that person or animal as already healed. This is the focus of true healing and in your moment of healing or sending healing, no issues exist. The Sea The sea holds one of the most amazing healing gifts in the universe. We are all drawn to this vast body of water, which proves how powerful it is. I’ve worked with the sea to help heal people for some time now as it cleanses away worries

By Mark Bajerski and negative thoughts. When you’re near the sea, you can’t explain it, but you feel lighter and happier. We can all use the sea to heal ourselves. Whether you paddle in the sea water or take a swim in it, you feel its power naturally cleansing and clearing away negative energy in and around your body. Stepping into the sea or taking a swim is not always possible and the following exercises have the same effect, even if you are just sitting by the sea. Find a quiet place to sit comfortably. Now, create a connection to the sea by simply taking in all its greatness − its depth; its movement; its energy. Watch and listen as the waves move back and forth, creating wonderful reflections which sparkle along the water’s surface. Follow the flow and rhythm of the water to allow for feelings of calmness and the letting go of all your daily worries and fears. Be still and present in the moment. Focus on your breathing - in through the nose and breathe out through the mouth. Visualise yourself next to a vast healing bowl of water, breathing in the healing energy through your nose. Each time you breathe in through your nose, you are receiving the most powerful cleansing for your body. When you breathe out through your mouth, visualise all the negativity inside you being released through your breath: any physical or emotional pains, anything which disturbs or bothers you in any way – breathe it all out. As you breathe in and the cleansing continues, any beautiful sensations, messages or visualisations you receive, recognise that these are all messages for you from Spirit. If you don’t live close to the sea, I’ve a great healing secret to share so you can bring the sea right into your home! You need a large bowl, one bag of sea salt and some fresh water. Tip the whole bag of salt into the bowl and pour warm water on top (just hot enough so that the sea salt melts). Place the bowl down onto the floor. Sit comfortably and place your bare feet in the bowl for thirty minutes. Alternatively, you can place this bowl on a bedside table or close to or under your bed. While you sleep, the salt water will act as a vacuum cleaner for your negative thoughts. Once you have completed the exercise, pour the bowl of sea water carefully down the toilet or sink. If any of the water touches your hands, wash them quickly for it now holds negative energy. My clients, friends and I have found this exercise to be one of the most beneficial ways to cleanse heavy energy and keep the mind free from stress.

KEY HEALTH Recipes for Summer Hello again! Summer is just around the corner, and everyone seems to be looking for a miracle diet to lose that extra bit of weight. I’m sorry to say this, but as most of your already know, losing weight is hard work! Eating a good variety of fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans and wholemeal grains (plus or course taking regular exercise and drinking plenty of water), the better the content of nutrients in your food, the less you will crave the bad habits of sugary drinks, crisps or something sweet that we all enjoy. In the next issue, I will however give you some tips for finding easy recipes to make some nice treats to help curb sugar cravings. Tempeh Stir Fry with Soba Noodles of Pumpkin and Buckwheat with a Teriyaki Sauce Ingredients 1 cup of Tempeh or your choice of Meat or Fish, cut into fine strips 2 tbs. Fresh Ginger, cut into fine strips 1 medium Onion, cut into fine strips 1 Red Pepper, cut into fine strips 2 cloves of Garlic finely chopped 1 cup of flat Green Beans, finely chopped 2cups of Broccoli chopped into bite-sized pieces (I recommend cutting the broccoli first to let it get its enzymes active to resist the high temperatures of cooking). 300gr Buckwheat and Pumpkin Soba Noodles 2tbs. Tamari or Soy sauce 3 or 4 tbs. Teriyaki sauce 1 tbs. oil (I recommend coconut or sesame oil or just some salted water)

By John Stark Method Start by heating up the wok. Once it’s ready, add the oil of your choice or salted water. Starting with the Tempeh or meat of your choice, stir fry it with the garlic and ginger until it’s a golden colour, then remove it from the wok. Add the broccoli next and quick fry it adding the green beans and the onion. Let it fry for a while before adding the red pepper. In another pot boil some salted water and cook the noodles according to the instructions. Once the noodles are ready, drain the water and add the noodles and Tempeh or meat to the rest of the vegetables. And add the Tamari and Teriyaki sauce. Red Cabbage, Carrot, Apple & Celery Salad Ingredients ½ a cup of finely-chopped red cabbage ½ a cup of grated carrot 1 apple, grated. ½ a cup of finely-chopped celery Dressing 2tbs. Apple Cider Vinegar 1tbs Honey Juice of one Grapefruit 1handful of Walnuts or any nuts you have to hand Method Put the red cabbage, apple, celery and carrots into a bowl. For the dressing, put all ingredients into a food processor and blend all together. Once it’s mixed well, add it to the salad. You can also add seeds or sprouts of your choice to decorate.

KEY ASTROLOGY Jupiter in Libra – Love Train... How time flies... here we are just into the 6th month of 2016 and the temperature is soaring already in Spain with summer months predicted to be higher than average! Time to get the fans out and the air-con serviced! Astrologically we’ve had Mercury and Mars simultaneously slowing us down during May and I wonder how everyone has fared? Mercury was retrograde from 28th April to 23rd May and Mars is still retrograde, it turns direct on the 1st July. As I wrote in my February article, the energy of a Mars retrograde can cause irritability, anger, frustrations etc. Mars represents forward action, what we desire as well as what angers us and when it goes retrograde we, (along with everything else in our lives) are simply not able to move forward in the way we want or expect. And with Mercury retrograde in May in the sign of Taurus (slow at the best of times) our mental agilities may have been rather sluggish. Having patience and going with the flow during these periods, rather than resisting and fighting back are the ways of least personal suffering... as the saying goes ‘what we resist, will persist’!

trait) and exercise patience in order to reach the point you want to get to. Libra is the 7th sign of the Zodiac, it rules the relationship sector of the chart and Jupiter, planet of expansion, travelling through this sign can bring romance and often an over-the-top show of love. Does this mean you’ll have to wait until September before this phase of relationship luck kicks off in September? What about now? Well it’s true that people are meeting and getting together all the time but with Jupiter still in Virgo ploughing through the tedious and minor details of life (boring to some with a big B) and being hit intermittently with some stressful planetary aspects, the luck factor of this benevolent planet has been somewhat drained.

Probably the best news this year, especially for relationships, will come when Jupiter changes signs on September 9th as it leaves the earth sign Virgo and enters the air sign of Libra where it will stay until October 2017. The theme that often comes up for people is relationships. We all want to connect with others and have a partner ... a normal, human desire that we all deserve. Over the past year while Jupiter has been travelling through the sign of Virgo we were encouraged to pay attention to the smaller and finer details of life, health, food and work (all ruled by Virgo). However Jupiter in Libra has a very different planetary energy and a major hope factor to look forward to.

When Jupiter enters Libra it will bring a breath of fresh air in the relationship department. The energy in play will help manifest love, luck and cooperation much more abundantly than it is now and people are going to be more in the mood to connect. They will want to work in partnerships rather than fly solo. It will also help those struggling in relationships. Perhaps you’ve been thinking of jumping ship with a particular relationship. If you’re serious about making it work then this shift can help you. Lastly a word about Libra... this sign likes commitment and pushes to work through problems, find ways to compromise and balance things out. It doesn’t say, forget it I’m done, rather it sees value and worth in cooperation. So how will this new shift affect you? Those with Sun in Libra will feel it the strongest as Jupiter is entering a new 12 year cycle through their sign. It also makes good aspects to the other air signs Gemini and Aquarius. Needless to say all signs will feel the new energy of Jupiter in Libra come September and for the following 12 months... it’s up to you to make the most it!

If you are looking for love, struggling with love or having a hard time cooperating with others this is going to help big time. Only one drawback... don’t go overboard (a Jupiter

KEY HOLISTIC Healing Paths for Body, Soul and Spirit The understanding of health and disease has changed in the last 20 years. Today we know that many factors are crucial whether people feel healthy or ill. In various interactions physical, emotional, mental, social and economic conditions are those which influence our health. The health-promoting factors mainly are experiencing coherence and solidarity, understanding, self-efficacy, attentiveness and the ability of self-organization. People develop skills to meet the challenges of life, they can draw on resources that help coming back to a salutary balance. A holistic health culture contributes to promote the healthy balance through physical, spiritual and mental exercises, to increase self-healing forces and develop skills such as mindfulness, intuition and relaxation. With increasing health awareness today more people pay attention to a healthy lifestyle, whether through physical activities, conscious diet, meditation and much more; people search for instructions and guidance on their way. Sound-Massage-Therapy by Peter Hess has been developed in over 30 years of research and practice and has been adjusted to the needs of people in western cultures. From gentle but highly effective relaxation to targeted application in medical and medical care professions. During Sound Massage, a holistic method, therapy singing bowls are

placed in a particular system on the dressed body and gently tapped. The rich in harmonics singing bowls, consisting of certain metal alloys, are not only audible but noticeable. Sounds have a harmonizing effect to their environment, which we know from beautiful music experiences; this wisdom was used while ringing of church bells with its powerful vibrations and in many old cultures producing certain sounds and rhythms, which special vibrations lifting people from everyday life and conveying a special energy to them. During Peter Hess-Sound Massage the body’ s own liquid serves to receive and transport the vibrational rhythm – our body consists of up to 70 - 80% water. The gentle sound vibrations support the body’s perception, loosen tension and stimulate blood circulation. The harmonious sounds enable deep mental relaxation. So fears, insecurities and physical stress such as blockages can be released and important regeneration processes may be initiated. Christine Heckel is a certified Sound Relaxation Coach and the only representative of the Peter Hess Institute in Germany representing the Peter Hess Academy Spain. KEY HOLISTIC My First Book

By Barbara Franken, Creative Visionary & Master Creator

My first book Your Magnificent Self… A Journey to Freedom shares my journey through life discovering the magic of not only myself and the Environment, but of the multi-dimensional world I began to see beyond my Human 5 senses that literally blew my mind away and I never looked on the physical world the same again. As I began to love and trust myself more and more, my consciousness expanded and I opened up to amazing and quite unbelievable insights. I was inspired to write my book in chapters about the extra-ordinary Elemental beings that I perceived and their messages to me… To remind myself and all Humankind, who choose to listen; who we truly are and to prepare us for our new role as Alchemist, Integrator and MasterCreator. Ormus is one of my favourite characters who explains how important it is for all Humankind to awaken to the New Energy Consciousness that we have called forth and realise the truth of our own Enlightened Divinity and Alchemist self… that waits patiently within each Human being. Ormus shares with me much information about energy dynamics an important part is how Alchemy is the transformation and

re-arrangement of energy. It is Humankind’s inherent ability to manifest energy into any form we choose. We are made up of consciousness that when inspired by our passion and hearts desire, attracts energy that constantly moves and manifests in temporary states, to itself in order to play and create. My book is available via all major online book stores, is scattered around the Costa del Sol (see my website store for links) or you can ring me, as I always have stock at home. My MasterCreator Class in May attracted magnificent friends who were ready to commit to and celebrate their own MasterCreator self. I will be holding the Class again in November (5 weeks on a Tuesday afternoon), if you would like to register to join this next group or maybe you prefer to take part online from your own home and at your own pace. Please contact me: Website: http://www.memymagnificentself.com, Email: Barbara@memymagnificentself, Tel: 650 796 579. Money raised from my books and classes go to my non-profit Asociacion Magnifica Conciencia No 11791 that funds my Creative Art Project I bring into local schools.

KEY FEATURE The Amazing World of Carolien de Bree “I was born in Purmerend, Holland, and as far as I can remember, I always saw and felt a presence surrounding me, seeing deceased people, auras, feeling and hearing the emotions and thoughts of other people, but also the voices from those who had passed away. For me this was and still is all one. I remember at about the age of 5, my mother and I, whilst shopping, meeting a lady and mother asked her, how she was. The women replied that she was fine. I looked at her and thought “That’s not true, your husband just died and you are very sad.” I didn’t understand why she was lying, as I saw her husband standing next to her and telling me. I never told anyone what I saw and heard because I never saw anyone respond to those who have passed away and now residing in the spirit world. Situations like this were quite normal for me and most of the time the spirits that I saw were connected to someone, so it always felt okay for me. When I was about 7 or 8 years old, I remember seeing spirits that were not familiar for me. One evening when it was time for me to go up to bed and as I was by the stairs and looking up, I saw 3 spirits standing there, staring at me and talking to each other, I just stood there, not sure if I wanted to go upstairs. So gripping my fist tightly and thought, “Well, I don’t know them but if they harm me in any way I will hit them”. When upstairs they stepped aside and let me go to my bedroom, smiling at me and the energy felt good, so I had nothing to worry about. I didn’t know that they were spirits, for me they were people who I could see through.

my world, so I tried to see how far I could get with this inspiration growing inside me. So began my new venture, beginning with a modest site on the internet, going to psychic conventions to get my name promoted. One evening, my guide from the spirits asked me, “What if, what if you are asked to work for television?” As I never had a dream to work for television so I replied “No thank you”. Again my spirit guide started talking, “Yes, but what if, what would you say when you are asked?” I thought it was a strange question, so I said, “Well if someone asks me, I will say yes okay” as I confidently believed that would never happen. The next day I received a text message from someone from television, telling me of a TV programme about spirituality and that they were looking for someone to present the programme and asked me to come over to talk. That same week on the train to Media Park in Hilversum, I spoke to my spirit guide asking him, “What if I really don’t want to do this and I will say no to the programme”. My guide started laughing and said. “Well they will find you anyway so you can say no, but TV will come to you and will be part of your life”. I was invited to work for the Dutch TV programme Astrotv on TV channel SBS6 and NET5, broadcasting its first programme in September 2006 and by the end of November I had my first talk on TV and in December of 2006 was trained in TV presentation and worked for 6 years. Wonderful to be part of something so beautiful and my guides and spirits helped me give people clear and specific answers to their needs about their love lives, their children, future or work, and asking me about their loved ones who had passed over to the other side.

On another occasion, I was 11, and my father was redecorating our home and working hard to make the living room beautiful again. Looking at what he was doing, I saw big energy balls floating in the room, beautiful colours of yellow and orange, and was so impressed by the beauty and the movement till my mother began talking, they were gone and I thought, “Don’t tell anyone because then they will say that I need glasses.”

Last November 2015, during the night I woke up because my spirit guide said the word AngelGuidance. Awake but not knowing what I wanted to do with that name, I went on the internet and AngelGuidance became my domain. I got ideas for a new site called AngelGuidance, to make it possible for people to find guidance by phone, email, text messages connecting with angel’s energy.

My dream was to help people, giving them messages and healing from the other side. I had worked in other fields, but at that time of my life I was unemployed and looking to change

www.angelguidance.nl is now online with a team of gifted people to help those who need some AngelGuidance and I will be visiting Marbella in August for an overdue vacation.

KEY SPORTS The Masters

By Steve Billingham

It’s Sextupletastic! Ernie Els seven putted at the first ‘Olives Teas’ for a 10 – a sextuple bogey. Paul Casey played some excellent iron shots on the opening day but faded. Danny Willett, after a couple of victories on the European tour in the season started the tournament at 60/1. 58-year-old Bernhard Langer, still using a belly putter, played very nicely for a third round 70 and was the most accurate driver in the tournament with 73.2% of fairways hit. Favourite Jordan Spieth was leading, American up and comer Smiley Kaufman was third with Matsuyama also loitering in the top 5. Lee Westwood, wretchedly out of form this season, played surprisingly well to be in the top 10 going into the final round. Matsuyama fired an eagle in the closing holes but missed a short putt for birdie at the 15th meaning he was still a shot adrift of Spieth at 3 under par. There were only 4 men under par after 3 rounds and three more including Danny Willett on even par. Another short putt missed at 16 brought him back to 2 under and he finished the round with a level par 72 and a 1 under par total.

Billy Hershals ball blew back down the slope and into the water while Hershal was walking towards it and he was penalised a shot for it, despite making no contact with the ball. ‘Harsh on Hershal perhaps,’ remarked an observer, ‘I mean if the wind blows your ball away without you addressing it’s hardly your fault is it?’ Unlikely enough, this was perhaps Lee Westwood’s best chance yet to win it, 2 shots back on 1 under. Just when he gets into contention, he drives waywardly and drops a shot. A very encouraging final round of 67 for Paul Casey and a fourth place finish while a Spieth birdie on 9 moved him to 7 under. The early red button coverage showed players like Hunter Mahan and Sergio Garcia playing through Amen Corner and onwards dropping shots, occasionally gaining shots, cursing, gesticulating (particularly Garcia) after a poor iron shot and redeeming with a brilliant chip. The twelfth on the final round was the turning point when Spieth hit into the water, then again the next iron a total mis-hit. Spieths fifth shot went into the bunker and he holed for a quadruple bogey 7. A Westwood eagle at 15 brought him to 3 under.

With the big wide fairways and no rough you can drive loosely at Augusta – but you can’t putt loosely.

A birdie 2 on 16 (the big iron shot came here) gave Danny Willett a 2 shot lead on 5 under par and he closed out on that score to become champion.

Towards the closing stages of the third round, the wind got up and Spieth slowed his play up. The first sign of a blip came at the final hole where a double bogey 6 left Spieth on 3 under.

Spieth parred 16 after a wiggly birdie putt slipped by and Spieth, 5 up after 12 holes finished as runner-up on 2 under par along with Lee Westwood.

KEY PETS Tips for the Summer

By Joanna the Dog Groomer

So summer is upon us. As a qualified dog groomer for over 25 years, and for 15 on the Costa del Sol, here is my advice for your dog during the summer months. WARNING – Your dog’s pads can and will burn in seconds walking on hot sand, metal drain covers, stainless steel; prolonged walking on pavements that are in direct sunlight can also cause problems. Remember that just like humans, your dog’s paws and their health will really affect how your dog walks and in turn their joint and spine health. Some damage to pads will result in your dog walking in an abnormal way causing added pressure on their joints. PAD CARE • Cracked heals - rub in 100% Pure Coco Butter or pad wax; both are safe for your dog to lick. • Cuts - seek advice from your vet. • Matting – on long-haired breeds it is important to have the fur trimmed inside the paws. Matting can cause dogs to lick and chew, resulting in infection. Please also remember that dogs’ paws and ears lose heat, so these areas should be kept clean and matt-free to allow heat loss in summer. EAR CARE If your dog enjoys swimming, here’s some advice: • Encourage your dog to shake well after swimming. Never tell them off for that “mad 5 minutes” of running around and shaking. Instinct is a wonderful thing; it will remove all unwanted water from their ears! • Your dog groomer or vet should check the condition of your dog’s ears every few months. Chronic ear infections are a common problem here in Spain. • In long-coated breeds, the hair inside the ears should be plucked out to prevent problems. FUR Remember – if your dog is shaved for the summer, it may

34

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

be at risk of burning in the sun so for those sun worshipping days, use sun cream. For dogs with undercoats (German Shepherds, Huskies etc) the undercoat should be removed to allow the air to reach the skin. SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE Heavy panting, rapid breathing, saliva becomes very thick, dog may vomit (this could be instant dehydration) unsteady on feet like being drunk, bloody diarrhoea, skin does not spring back when pulled, high rectal temperature or signs of shock, lips and mucous membranes turn grey followed by collapse, fits and sometimes even death. HOW TO DEAL WITH HEAT STROKE IN DOGS • Place the dog in a cool room or shaded area and use a fan or air conditioning. Pour cool (not cold) water over your dog and massage into fur and skin or submerge your dog in cool water. Never use iced water or ice tins as this can exacerbate the heat stroke. • Spread the fur open or brush backwards to allow heat to flow out. • Take the dog’s temperature. Anything above 103oF (34.5oC) is a medical emergency. • Keep a Paediatric Electrolyte handy at all times, mix with cool water and then give your dog small, regular amounts. • Remain calm to avoid causing your dog any unnecessary stress. • Follow the above recommendations and then seek the help of your vet as soon as possible. TO AVOID HEAT STROKE Avoid leaving your dog in the car or prolonged daytime walks, including around the market ground (it never ceases to amaze me that people walk their dogs around the market at noon). Remember if the temperature gets very high, your dog could suffer heat stroke even in the shade. Avoid the use of muzzles.

KEY PETS The International Day of the Podenco

May 1st, 2015 was designated as The International Day of the Podenco, and an E-march was launched...however this year it was decided to actually make it a physical march and so it began..... Marches were planned all over the world from April 23rd through to the end of May and I was invited to join in the London march which was from the Spanish Embassy where a petition was taken (they wouldn’t let us in but sent a representative out) and then we marched through London to No 10 Downing Street to hand in another petition where many of us were invited in (without the dogs though)!

cruelty to these breeds (in fact to any and all animals).

The petitions and marches were to highlight the plight of the Spanish hunting dogs, mainly Podencos and Galgos, but also Bodugerous, Setters and Pointers which are terribly abused and/or discarded, hung and left to die a slow death which is just so, so sad. We are hoping that these petitions will end the

The celebrity supporting this campaign was the charismatic actress, Joanna Lumley. It was a wonderful day, and the dogs were so well behaved. It was hard for anyone not from Spain to see just how many of these kind of dogs end up in the perreras and the refugios as they are so loving, unassuming and quiet, and so regal. Many newspapers reported on the events but for me to actually be there taking in the ambience and seeing some dogs that I have adopted or helped to adopt was truly wonderful.

KEY PETS Thinking about getting a Dog? It can happen to anybody. You see this great dog that’s looking for a home and gives you that big-eyed look that says “pick me”. Before you know it, you’re buying dog food and he’s already sleeping on your bed! Falling in love with a dog is easy. Sharing your home with a canine friend can bring great love and fun. There’s no doubt that dogs can give unconditional acceptance and loyalty, provide constant companionship and fun, and help relieve stress after a hard or busy day. However, making the decision to get a dog shouldn’t be taken lightly. Owning a dog takes a lot of time, money, and commitment – over 15 years worth, in many instances. Dog ownership can be extremely rewarding, but it’s also a big responsibility. Here are some things to consider: Why do you want a dog? It’s a simple question, but one many people fail to ask themselves before they get a dog. Getting a dog just because it’s “the thing to do,” or because your children have been begging for a puppy can end up being a big mistake. Remember that you will be responsible for caring for your new family member for up to 15 years. They are not disposable!

By Donna Saunders – In The Doghouse

Is there enough time in your life for a dog? Dogs are companion animals and cannot be ignored just because you’re busy or too tired to deal with them. They require a lot of care, which includes feeding, training, exercising, and socializing – dogs need companionship every day. Many wonderful dogs end up in rescue because their owners didn’t have the time to train and care for them. Can you afford a dog? The costs of caring for a dog throughout his life can be expensive. Healthcare, training classes, grooming, food, toys, treats, boarding, and other expenses add up fast. Are you ready to deal with the problems a dog can cause? Whether you get a puppy or an adult, there will always be unexpected health-related emergencies. It’s also a good idea to expect a certain amount of damage around the house and to your personal belongings, especially when raising a puppy or any dog not yet housetrained. Editor’s note: I am pleased to welcome Donna to Key to Mijas Costa. Donna will be giving more advice on whether owning a dog is suitable for you in the next issue of the magazine.

KEY MOTOR New App Can Report if Mobile used by Drivers Israeli technologists have devised an application that they hope will significantly reduce the number of incidents on the roads caused by drivers using their mobile phone. Developed by a company called Cellebrite, the Textalyzer tool allows the authorities access to the mobile phone´s history to show if the phone was being used at the time or just before an incident took place. Unable to immediately show any personal information relating to the call, text or phone use, Textalyzer will only be able to report on the functions being operated.

The application has yet to be adopted although the American law makers are the first to consider its use in legislation. In Spain, the DGT started installing a new series of traffic cameras which not only watch for speeding motorists but also monitor for mobile phone and even seatbelt use. These devices act automatically and support other methods of detection such as airborne and ground patrols. In the most recent campaign, more than 1,100 drivers were caught using their mobile whilst driving.

KEY COMPUTERS Keeping your Computer Cool this Summer! Your computer contains a lot of parts, almost all of which create heat when your computer is on. Some parts, like the CPU and graphics card can get so hot you could cook on them! Here are a few cooling solutions to help you now that the warm weather is here. Clean Your Computer The fans inside your computer are there to keep it cool. Do you know what slows a fan down and then eventually makes it stop? Dirt - in the form of dust, pet hair, etc. It all finds a way into your computer and much of it gets stuck in the several fans.

By Computer City

your lap whilst allowing free airflow to circulate around it. At Computer City we offer our customers cooling mats at competitive prices and will be happy to show you how they work. Clean away that dust! If you let dust accumulate in your laptop, you’re bound to have problems. And you’ll have to fix those problems with a good cleaning. Unfortunately, the real dust problem may be in places that require a more complicated dismantling. If you feel comfortable taking apart a laptop, go ahead. Otherwise, you may want to take it to a professional. We can clean your computer economically and quickly.

Install a Case Fan A case fan is just a small fan that attaches to either the front or the back of a desktop computer case, from the inside. Case fans help move air through a computer. These can be fitted cheaply. Relocate your computer Move your computer if it is in direct sunlight. Also, if your computer is up against a wall, move it a few inches away from the wall to allow for some airflow. The best place for your PC is on top of a desk not underneath on the floor. What about laptops? The strange fact is, when you use a laptop on your lap, you’re just asking for it to overheat. Whenever your laptop is on, make sure that nothing blocks the vents (which are probably on the sides). Don’t put the laptop on a pillow or a soft mattress, where it’s likely to sink in and get blocked. Any soft surface impedes airflow into and out of the cooling vents. It also can cause heat to get caught underneath the unit. Elevate the laptop Put a small book or item (like the docking station for your iPod) under your computer’s battery when sitting at your desk. This slight tilt allows a lot more air to flow under the laptop, keeping it significantly cooler. Ensure that the book is not blocking the bottom fan hole. Buy a laptop-cooling mat Laptop cooling mats allow you to use your laptop on

KEY LAW EU DP Regulation in force 25 May 2018 Time to start preparing for compliance The EU Data Protection Regulation was published in the European Union’s Official Journal recently, and will enter into force on 25 May 2018. Together with EU Regulation 2016/679, the European Commission has published the text of the so-called Police and the Passenger Name Record Directive. By 25 May 2020 and every four years thereafter, the Commission will submit a report on the evaluation and review of Regulation 2016/679 to the European Parliament and to the Council. The reports will be made public. Businesses now have two years to start their preparation process -GDPR to be adopted The European Parliament’s final approval will clear the way for adoption of the EU General Data Protection Regulation. The European Parliament’s civil liberties (LIBE) committee already approved, on 11 April, the revised text which had been subject to technical and linguistic checks and revisions. Many language versions of the GDPR were published last week. Speaking at the European Data Protection Commissioners’ Spring Conference in Luxembourg on 3 May, EU Justice Commissioner, Viviane Reding, explained that the large number of delegated acts in the EU proposals for a Data Protection Regulation leave some room for adapting to new technological developments without the need to resort to a full legislative process. With regard to international data transfers, she said that the Commission will continue to work on Binding Corporate Rules, and the continuation of the US Safe Harbor Agreement, as well as contractual clauses. She said that adequacy decisions for New Zealand and Uruguay will be adopted shortly. EU DPAs: In the absence of the EU-US Privacy Shield, BCRs can be used for now The Chair of the EU Data Protection Working Party, Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin (also President of France’s DPA, the CNIL), said that the concerns that remain on the Privacy Shield include US bulk surveillance of EU citizens, lack of recognition of the data retention principle in the Privacy Shield, and the independence and powers of the US Ombudsman who would deal with complaints. In addition, there are still ques-

40

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

By Victoria Anzola – www.seqqe.com

tions about onward data transfers, even though progress has been made on this topic. Falque-Pierrotin said that the EU DPAs have raised several points with the EU Commission and the US administration. Some of these concerns have been met with informal unwritten assurances, but they cannot form an integral part of an adequacy decision. It is too early to come to a conclusion about Binding Corporate Rules and model contracts for EU-US transfers, but companies can continue to use them for now, FalquePierrotin said. The EU DPAs will take a decision on this point when the EU has finalised the Privacy Shield. The EU Commission has said it intends to complete this work by midJune. While the EU DPAs’ common position, to be released soon, is not binding, the DPAs could challenge any deal put in place via supporting legal cases against the Privacy Shield in the Court of Justice of the European Union. What will the new European Data Protection Board mean for companies? The EU Data Protection Authorities have published their Article 29 DP Working Party programme. It highlights the level of cooperation needed and the importance of the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) which will replace the Article 29 DP Working Party under the EU Data Protection General Regulation (GDPR). The DPAs are to set up an EDPB task force to ensure that the Board will be ready to function from day one of the new regime. The secretariat will be provided by the EU Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) “under the instructions” of the Chair of the EDPB. The secretariat will have an important role in administering the One-Stop-Shop and the consistency mechanism. These developments are also important for companies when they need to designate a lead Data Protection Authority to resolve data protection issues involving more than one EU Member State. The Board will issue guidance for controllers and processors – for example, on the data portability right, Data Protection Impact Assessments, certifications, and the role of Data Protection Officers. The DPAs say that their action plan will be reviewed periodically and the Article 29 DP Working Party will regularly consult business representatives and civil society representatives on their views regarding implementation of the GPDR.

KEY FEATURE How to Remove Facebook Apps (that Might be Spying on You) You may have signed up to several tens or even hundreds of apps using your Facebook account and forgotten all about them being there, lurking in the background. Personally I had 88, of which at least half I have no idea where they came from ... eek! While they are there they could be: Accessing your demographics Accessing your friends’ list Accessing your email address Automatically posting on your Timeline Automatically posting on pages you admin Sending bothersome notifications Accessing your page Insights Targeting you for ads So what can you do about it? The best way is to remove the ones you are not using and rummage around in your settings and see what’s going on. I recommend using your desktop access to your account to do this as on mobile devices it’s very fiddly.

By Fiona Catchpowle

Here are the steps to take: Click Drop-down Arrow in Blue Navigation Bar Choose “Settings” This should take you to your “General Account Settings” page: Click “Apps” Now you can see all the apps you’re connected to on Facebook. Click “X” to Remove App Communicate with Pop-Up Carefully read this info & click “Remove” to get rid of the app. Here, you can also select a box that will delete all the app activity from Facebook. But proceed with caution! This step can remove page apps and posts made to your pages or profile. Move to the next app when finished. I hope you find the information helpful. KEY FEATURE So, What Does The Summer Bring Us Here On The Coast?

By Anne Hernández, Costahelp

Apart from the obvious rise in temperatures and daily sunshine, it’s not all fun and games on the beach for those of us who live here and still have to work during the summer months! And you can easily identify the resident workers they don’t have a tan! The warmer weather is obviously very welcome as is summer here for the tourists and the boost to the economy but for us residents and workers it can be quite a stressful time the many fiestas, shorter working hours, parking problems, overcrowded restaurants and cafes when we have strict lunchtimes, clients and providers going on holiday, notaries, solicitors, Town Halls and other public institutions using skeleton staff (if any) during August, having family and friends here visiting which is lovely but they want to go out every night and we still have to get up in the morning, and not least of all trying to look presentable and professional in work clothes when everybody else is in swimwear in 35c!! Sound all too familiar?? Stress, stress and more stress!!

46

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

We can act sensibly though and in the first instance, take a leaf out of the locals’ book - stay out of the sunshine, restrict alcohol and coffee intake to avoid dehydration and instead, try drinking 2 litres of water a day, avoid the ice in drinks too, it’s not always made from bottled water and be wary of ice-cream that looks crystallised and re-frozen or any tapas that have been lingering on the bar counter! Don’t forget to use repellent against the mosquitos and stay away from long grasses where snakes and other undesirable wildlife might lurk. And remember that barbecues in public areas are forbidden from 1 June - 15 October. Anybody who sees any smoke of suspected fire in the campo should call the Fire Brigade on 080 or General Emergencies 112. If you have a BBQ at home, that is fine but the Bomberos recommend you take due care and safety precautions. I’d suggest you keep a big bucket of water handy!! Have a happy summer!

Open Tuesday to Sunday from 6.00pm. Special Earlybird 2-course menu is only 20 Euros per head available from 6-8pm which includes a glass of very good quality house wine. Great new a la carte menu includes Fresh Rock Oysters, the ever-popular Bang Bang Shrimp and for those who prefer a non-fish option, Olive & Duck Liver Paté with Walnut & Orange, Citrus Dressing and Garlic Toast. For main course we would highly recommend the Mixed Fish Grill served with delicious sweet potato chips and also the Cape Malay Dhal Monkfish and Tiger Prawn Curry or then again, Blue Marlin Seafood Stew or perhaps Lobster Thermidor. If you should have any room left for dessert, then the Boozy Bread, Butter and Date Pudding or Crèpes Suzette are highly recommended. Alison has chosen the wine list very carefully and there is something for everyone’s taste including some organic choices and “blue” wine. Key Recommended. The Blue Marlin will be closed for holidays from 2nd to 6th July inclusive.

RESTAURANT REVIEWS

COSTA FOODS HOG ROAST As well as BBQ and outside catering, Costa Foods is renowned for its excellent Hog Roast. This is a great option for something a little bit different and is suitable either indoors or out, so great all year round. Costa Foods Hog Roast can cater from 30 to 250 people. We have had the Hog Roast more than once and we must say that the flavour is out of this world – the most succulent slices of pork with the best crackling you have ever eaten. It can be simple – just teamed up with stuffing and apple sauce in a bap, or go the whole hog with salads or with roast and mash potatoes, a selection of vegetables and gravy etc. Steve offers various options for your event, so why not give him a call and let him know what you have in mind now that party season is here.

KEY FEATURE Days Out

By Anne Hernández, Costahelp

You have most likely visited Mijas, Ronda, Coín, Monda, Istán, Casares, Benahavís and other inland villages but do you know Málaga city? Try going into the capital and enjoy what the real Andalucia can offer from its history to art and architecture, local fiestas and cuisine. Malaga is steeped in history and is one of the oldest cities in the world and dates back to 770BC. It saw transformation through the Roman period when its amphitheatre was built and its port was used to export wine, fish, meat and olive oil. Today it is a bustling city with vestiges of its heritage. Visit the Moorish fortress of Alcazaba, the Castillo de Gibralfaro, the Cathedral, the Monuments, the Arabic baths and the Roman Theatre or one of the 30 museums Málaga offers, the Picasso and the Carmen Tyson being two of the main ones.

Admire the street entertainers in the historic centre and the modern art lining its walls. Go to the busy iconic food market Mercado de Atarazanas which is housed within a 19th century iron structure and has the 14th century Moorish gate that once connected the city with the port. Here you will be astounded at the colourful array of seafood, meats, fruits and vegetables. You could take a leisurely visit to one of the Sierras and spend the afternoon tasting the sweet wines typical of Málaga not forgetting to taste the wonderful traditional tapas, the summer favourite Gazpacho and its most famed culinary delight - the freshest and tastiest fish you will find anywhere in the world!

KEY FEATURE Buying In Spain: Before You Sign Anything Before you sign anything in Spain, even a small reservation deposit agreement when buying from a private re-seller, there are some pieces of paper you should see. These include: 1) The seller’s own title deeds, known as the Escritura Pública, and a report from the Property Registry called a Nota Simple. 2) The paid-up receipt for his IBI (annual property tax). 3) The Catastral certificate giving the exact boundaries and square metres of area. 4) Paid-up receipts for the annual fees of the community of property owners, the statutes of the community, and the

minutes of the last AGM. 5) Paid-up receipts for all utility bills. What are some pitfalls to buying a property in Spain? • The property is not registered. • Too many brokers are involved. • The property was sold to more than one buyer. • The new home is delivered late or with defects. Buying a property is probably the one biggest individual purchase you will ever make, don’t leave it to chance. Our legal department will make sure it all goes to plan.

KEY FEATURE Graffiti

By Anne Hernández, Costahelp

Athough not all graffiti is an eyesore, you only have to look at Banksy’s work to appreciate the talent of some of the graffiti artists, we must not lose sight of the fact that it is often the illegal defacing of buildings. In May, the local Mijas Police managed to identify and de-

nounce the perpetrators of some graffiti in Campo Mijas and Doña Ermita. They are now held responsible to erase the artwork they did and return the buildings to their original state. The local Mijas Police now have their own Facebook page Policía Local Mijas and update regularly.

KEY FEATURE BREXIT - Britain or UK? Brexit - the word dropped into most conversations at the moment though I am yet to understand why BRexit since it is not Britain it is the UK that is holding the referendum! Rightly or wrongly we have all seen so much media hype lately, is it all scaremongering? Who knows? Only time will tell. • ‘I want IN because I live in Spain, a European country and I want to remain European.’ • ‘I’m voting OUT because it is our only option to solve the immigration problem.’ • ‘OUT definitely, it’s costing us too much to remain and we get nothing for our money!’ • ‘IN, it’s a no-brainer! I need to ensure my continued entitlement to the health services here.’ • ‘I’m voting OUT. We did all right before and we shall do all right after! • ‘OUT - we should follow Norway’s example.’ • I will vote IN. I live in Spain and I don’t want my taxes increased to bolster the deficit of the loss of the UK’s contribution.’ • ‘IN for me. I have heard that Brexit will leave 2 million Britons in legal limbo abroad and I don’t want to be one of them!’ • ‘I will vote IN because they say that ex-pat pensioners will be 50,000 Euros worse off during the next 20 years.’

By Anne Hernández, Costahelp These are just some of the comments you can hear on the street everyday. I have done my homework into this and waded through the many opposing articles trying to ascertain the fact from the fiction. But, and it’s a big but, nobody seems to know how we ex-pats will be affected and that’s what makes it so confusing. I do know that Spain doesn’t want us to leave and really cannot comprehend why the referendum is even happening. I also saw that of a recent survey 79% of Spanish companies in the UK are dreading the thought that UK should exit. And follow Norway’s example? I’m not convinced because it has excessively high immigration and it still takes its orders from Brussels! It is true that Norway has twice rejected membership to the EU but did sign the EEA (European Economic Agreement) and also the EFTA (European Free Trade Association) to permit them to join the EU internal market for goods, cash, services and labour. Call me cynical but that sounds just like being in the EU! For those of you, like me, who have lived here more than 15 years, we are relieved of having to make the decision which seems unfair since we ex-pats abroad could be the most affected in the long run!
