KEY FEATURE Our 6th Anniversary!
By Ali Meehan, Costa Women
Costa Women have won a new badge! In the Olympics to get to 5000 members in our Costa Women community we have just won gold just before we celebrated our 6th anniversary! Communities can be defined as ‘a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common’ (which is a much more personal way of thinking of your Client base). Whilst our community is solely for Women, your community, or Client base may be very different. Here are my 5 tips for building your own community:1. Find your genre Know your community, who they are, where they can be found and don’t deviate from the path to their door. Many people will tell you that their product or service is for everyone – it’s not! It’s virtually impossible to find any product or service which works for someone from 0 to 100 years old, male, or female. 2. Be Consistent Whether on Social Media, website, emails, newsletters or any other sort of communication – be consistent. Aim to add value and share great content that is relevant to your community. 3. Be authentic! Be real in all your communications. People buy from people they always have and always will. They would rather you were
8
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
honest about a problem or issue, than made up a story as to why something wasn’t working and with that in mind… 4. Be Responsive The first priority is “always show up”. It’s really important to respond to all comments (whether good or bad). The bad may just highlight something that needs to change! If you can’t help, let your community know now. A response of “I don’t know, but let me come back to you with an answer” goes down much better than silence. 5. Try New Things Costa Women have just launched a new website – costawomen.com It’s been a big learning curve for me, but has meant that some of the features I wanted and have been asked for by the community are now available on the website. We still have a way to go, but we are getting there. Keep creating – it’s very easy for a business to become stale; spend time networking with other businesses to share ideas, set aside time each week to read blogs by your industry experts and check out the latest business books. “It was only after I found a community of like minded people that pushed me to be better, and liked my work, and wanted to see more of it, that I became successful.” Russell Nohelty

KEY HEALTH Whitening: 3 Things to Know
About Getting a Brighter Smile
By Dr Belinda Pamos, Sonrisa
Why Did My Teeth Change Colour? Over time, your teeth can go from white to not-so-bright for a number of reasons:
What Are My Whitening Options? Talk to your dentist before starting. If you are a candidate, there are three ways to put the shine back in your smile:
Food and Drink Tobacco Use Trauma Medications Or maybe your natural colour is a bit too yellow!
In-Office Bleaching This procedure is called chair-side bleaching and usually requires only one office visit. The dentist will apply either a protective gel to your gums or a rubber shield to protect your gums. Bleach is then applied to the teeth. A special light or laser might be used to enhance the action of the whitening agent.
How Does Teeth Whitening Work? Tooth whitening is a simple process. Whitening products contain one of two tooth bleaches (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide). These bleaches break stains into smaller pieces, which makes the colour less concentrated and your teeth brighter.
At-Home Bleaching Peroxide-containing whiteners actually bleach the tooth enamel. They typically come in a gel and are placed in a tray that fits on your teeth. You may also use a whitening strip that sticks to your teeth. The concentration of the bleaching agent is lower than what your dentist would use in the office.

KEY HEALTH Is There a Quick Fix to Good Health? My honest answer to that question would be NO! Quick fixes are just that - quick and temporary. Yes, you can get strong medicine for your cardiovascular problems and synthetic laxatives for your bad digestion…but it will only treat the symptom and not the reason behind your health issues. If you only symptom treat your health issues instead of treating the underlying reason behind the symptom, other symptoms will show up in other places in your body. Your body will keep giving you a hard time until you start listening to it. Trust me - you do not have unbalanced cholesterol levels because you are lacking cholesterol-lowering drugs like statins. The same goes for digestive issues. You are not constipated because you are lacking laxatives. The reason behind both things can be found elsewhere. I totally understand why so many people use only conventional medicine and cling to the hope that it will do the trick. It would be so much easier if there were a magic pill that would balance our bodies and keep us healthy and happy. It is just not how it works.
By Maria Steffensen, Centro Sanum
You cannot treat yourself badly, eat junk, stress all the time, be inactive and expect your body (and mind) to be able to function really well. The holistic approach (which does not mean it´s not scientifically proved) I, as a health practitioner and nutritionist, have to my clients, will always seek to find and treat the root cause/causes of the symptoms. That always includes working with you and your eating, living and thinking habits. It can seem overwhelming, hard and confusing, but I promise you that your body and mind will reward you for your efforts. Permanent results come from permanent changes in your lifestyle and thinking patterns. Any health practitioner´s aim should always be to guide their clients towards a more balanced body and mind and towards a life with more quality, fun and good days - on a long term basis. Go get the best out of life! Maria Steffensen is a Health Practitioner, Nutritionist and Therapist. For more information visit her website - www. maria-steffensen.com.

KEY HEALTH Know Your Skin Type
By Anne Stark
More than ever this summer I have had clients seeking help with their skin. Unusual spots, red skin, dry or oily skin, things that are suddenly taking them by surprise. After talking with my clients and finding out about their skin routine, it has been quite easy to identify the cause of the problem. The number one culprit is the products they use; the wrong product, lack of or too much of a product, using a mixture of different products are also causing problems. Other problems identified included a lack of vitamins and minerals, hormonal changes etc. Even if you only have a few spots, people tend to think that you have acne and you then you tend to buy products for acneic skin. Within a short space of time, your skin becomes dry and flaky as the product has dried out all the skin’s moisture. Did you know that Tea Tree Oil is the best solution for acne? It has triple antiseptic effects as well as acting against bacteria, fungus and viruses. The secret against acne is daily hygiene. Tea Tree Cleansing Emulsion and Tea Tree Regulating Tonic are the perfect match against impurities. They oxygenate the skin and provide freshness and luminosity for acneic skin. Your skin cells renew every 28 days, so if you want to kill that spot, that will be the minimum time it will take to disappear completely. CV also has an anti-acne Essence roll on that you can keep with you all the time to use at the first sign of a pimple. Just apply it and say goodbye to the spots and welcome to lovely skin. Renew your skin every day with Bulgarian Rose Cleansing Emulsion and Tonic. Enjoy the sensation of cleansing and freshness of the moist petals gathered at nightfall. The cleansing emulsion and tonic complement each other to provide the best daily facial hygiene. Regular deep-cleansing facials with treatment are a must for fantastic skin. I will tailor make your facial according to your skin’s needs. I always use machines to reach all layers of the skin which gives excellent results. I have tested all the products I use to give you synergy of ingredients for the best possible results. Diamond micro-dermabrasion, ultrasound and the latest dermapen are for cleansing, followed by a treatment, and not forgetting Genie non-surgical face lift for its amazing results. Genie is the treatment for those who like the natural look to enhance their beauty. Genie slimming and toning treatments are also excellent especially coming up to the Xmas party season if you want to fit into that little black number! You can come to see me for a no-obligation consultation for any of my treatments.

KEY HEALTH Boost your Performance through Nutrition Are you looking for new and natural ways to increase your energy levels and performance? Whether you’re an avid athlete or preparing for a trek, nutrition plays an important part in endurance, energy and recovery. A natural Energy Boost Coenzyme Q10 is a vitamin-like substance which is responsible for 95 per cent of the body’s energy output. It controls how much energy our cells are able to make. Although some Q10 is obtained through our diet, most is manufactured within the body. From the age of 25, the body’s ability to manufacture the substance decreases. Intense physical exercise can also deplete Q10 levels. If you suffer extreme physical and mental fatigue, difficulty concentrating, energy slumps or mood changes then you may need to top up your Q10 levels. A Q10 supplement allows you to refuel your cells, unlike the temporary “kick” you get from caffeine or sugar, Q10 gives your body’s own energy production a lift at a cellular level. Q10 can improve your endurance and also help with muscle repair and functioning. The quality of a Q10 supplement is directly linked to its effectiveness; it is important to choose a supplement which has research affirming its bioavailability, such as the Q-Symbio study which proves the safety and efficacy of Bio-Quinone Q10. Professional athletes, Noel and Lynne Hanna, recently became the first couple to summit Mt Everest from both sides. Noel said: “Nutrition and diet are crucial and I try to get all of my essential nutrients from my diet however I take a Q10 supplement because it is one nutrient that you can’t get enough of through your diet. Q10 is critical for energy metabolism and yet is depleted during intense exercise, therefore Q10 supplementation is important. Lynne and I both take Bio-Quinone Q10 as it gives us added energy, coupled with great muscle recovery.”

normal muscle functioning. The best dietary sources are green leafy vegetables and cereals. To ensure you get enough magnesium, top up your levels with a supplement containing three different magnesium compounds: acetate, hydroxide and carbonate, this gives greater bioavailability and, therefore, more benefit to the body. An Energy Enhancer Pycnogenol is a unique plant extract that originates from the bark of the maritime pine trees and works as an antioxidant by protecting cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Research indicates pycnogenol may play an important role in physical activity bec ause it has been shown to aid the body in producing nitric oxide (NO), thus enhancing the blood microcirculation and improving blood flow to the muscles. This helps the body achieve peak muscle performance and speeds recovery after exercise. Through stimulating blood flow to muscle tissue, pycnogenol also aids in muscle recovery and alleviates cramping. For more information or nutritional advice, visit Anni’s Vital Shop.
Maintain your Health and Performance Magnesium plays a pivotal role in energy production, if magnesium levels are depleted, energy production is inhibited, and the eventual outcome is fatigue and weakness. Magnesium deficiency is very common and can be caused by factors such as stress, intense physical exercise, high intake of alcohol and caffeine and an unhealthy diet. If you fidget, have restless legs, suffer from anxiety, have hypertension or palpitations, you could need more magnesium in your diet. Magnesium helps to regulate potassium levels and the function of the adrenal gland, which are both important for maintaining adequate energy levels. KEY HEALTH MLD is not only for Lymphoedema! MLD is not only for lymphoedema! People are often surprised when I tell them this. Manual Lymphatic Drainage is the therapists’ equivalent to a ‘Super Food’. MLD increases the growth of white blood cells (lymphocytes) which help the Immune System to fight disease. MLD works on the Autonomic Nervous System. This consists of the sympathetic nervous system - the ‘day’ nerve, which makes us active and allows us to work, and the parasympathetic system – the ‘night’ nerve which permits us to rest, sleep and renew our strength for the next day. Due to the nature of the lymphatic system, lymphatic drainage can prove beneficial in the correction of numerous conditions as well as the maintenance of good health. One of the biggest benefits of MLD is as a cleanser of the skin. Because MLD helps to remove waste products and fluid in the tissues, the skin benefits from this and will start to look clearer, brighter and fresher in just a few treatments. • MLD can assist in the treatment of acne, eczema, wounds, burns, the appearance of scars and has been used to successfully treat skin ulcers. • MLD can help with cellulite.

• MLD can help as part of a weight loss/detox regime. • MLD can help with post-operative swelling and bruising, especially recommended following Liposuction and other aesthetic surgery. • MLD can help with chronic inflammatory conditions for example, sinusitis, arthritis and rosacea. • MLD can alleviate fluid congestion such as swollen ankles and tired puffy eyes and swollen legs due to pregnancy and excess heat. • MLD promotes the healing of fractures, torn ligaments, sprains, strains and reduces all kinds of pain including dental pain. • MLD enables deep relaxation to aid insomnia, depression and stress. Due to the gentleness of the treatment, individuals who find other forms of bodywork too strenuous may enjoy MLD, especially those who suffer with M.E or Fibromyalgia. KEY HOLISTIC Chakra Balancing
By Christine Heckel
Chakra Balancing seems fashionable at the moment - everyone talks about chakras and balance…. But actually what does it mean? Chakra is a Sanskrit word and stands for “wheel”. The origin of the chakra concept is in the Hindu religion. A chakra is a vortex of energy, located between the visible body and the invisible, a subtle energy field of the body, the astral body. The chakras connect both parts to each other and are also connected one to another. The energy channels are called Nadis (Sanskrit), the flowing energy “Prana”. In the most widespread theories one starts with seven main chakras, which are located from the base of the spine to the skull, the crown of our head. The vortex of energy rotate, the speed increases from bottom to top. They absorb subtle vibration from the outside, transform into life energy and transmit them via energy channels in different directions to glands, nerves and organs. Each chakra relates to specific organs, but also to different behaviour and the psyche. A person is in absolute balance when all the chakras are open and free to rotate, the speed that is provided to them. So Chakra Balancing is the goal, which is pursued when working with the chakras. Christine has trained in a special method, the Peter Hess-Sound Massage. Working with singing bowls and gongs we connect
with our physical as well as energetic body. Christine uses special Therapy singing bowls, made for this kind of complementary therapy. During a Chakra Balancing session positive affirmations may be used to support the therapy process. Affirmations help purify our thoughts and restructure the dynamic of our brains so that we truly begin to think nothing is impossible. The word affirmation comes from the Latin affirmare, originally meaning “to make steady, strengthen.” When having a Chakra Balancing session with Christine, a profound pre-conversation takes place to identify where support is needed in your system. Chakra Balancing is for physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Christine Heckel is a certified Sound Relaxation Coach and the only representative of the Peter Hess Institute in Germany representing the Peter Hess Academy Spain. LEARN FROM THE EXPERTS! – J.O.Y. KEY HEALTH Prevention Can Save Your Life The breasts are the symbol of a woman’s femininity, a crucial part of her sexuality and a bond between mother and child during maternity. But breasts are also the female organs that generate the highest incidence of cancer among women. Hence our interest in making it widely known that early detection is the only way to achieve the highest number of cures using the least aggressive treatments. The mammogram is undoubtedly the most effective method of cancer screening (the method used for early detection of the disease). It can detect 35% to 45% of tumours smaller than 1 cm, when we cannot yet feel them. However, this test is less sensitive on women younger than 40 due to the higher density of the breast tissue at a younger age. Therefore, it is important that women under 40 assess their family-related risks. For example, whether they have any direct relatives with breast cancer in the family or whether they have ever had a breast disease, to ascertain which check-ups are needed. In these cases, a complementary ultrasound scan diagnose small hidden abnormalities that the mammogram is unable to detect. And we must not forget the importance of breast self-exam-

ination. All women should be familiar with their own breasts and the changes that occur during the monthly cycle, so they can be seen by their healthcare provider if they detect anything unusual. Finally, a clinical breast examination should be part of an annual check-up, together with the smear test. Non-aggressive and cost-effective methods are available today for the early diagnosis of breast diseases. Don’t forget that prevention starts with you. KEY HEALTH Recipes for Autumn
By John Stark
Summer has passed and we now welcome autumn with open arms. I am sure we have all overindulged this summer! What I suggest for autumn is to cleanse from within. Detoxing your body is essential for good health, especially your kidneys and liver that are the vital organs to keep your body in check from any harmful substances like alcohol or medication, sugars, smoking , and other toxins. The best way to start your day is with a lemon, ginger, apple and wheatgrass smoothie - if you can’t find fresh wheatgrass, you can always use wheatgrass powder, which is just as good as fresh. My favourite is banana, spirulina and hemp protein, rice milk or any other vegetable milk you may have. Packed full of protein and minerals, it is perfect to keep you going for longer when you are exercising. In the beginning your detox experience can be either easy or difficult – it depends on how much you need to detox. I personally experienced a bad headache the first time, but different people can have different symptoms. All I can say is sometimes when these things happen, it means you are in need of it due to the fact that your body is full of toxins which are constantly moving through your system. It is also very possible that you might have a bad skin condition, allergy to dust or pollen, or cat or dog hair. I had allergies to all of these before but now I don’t even get a reaction, thanks to my new eating habits where I changed to more raw greens and fruit, less fried foods and generally started to work on my health. Veggie Burger Patties Ingredients 1 cup oat or any other flakes 1 red or white onion, minced 1 glove garlic

1 small handful fresh parsley and coriander 1 tbsp Tahini paste, peanut or any other nut butter 1 tbsp shredded coconut Juice of half a lemon ½ tsp coriander powder, curry powder, cumin powder Pinch of salt, black pepper, cinnamon (if you like it spicy, you can add cayenne pepper). 1 tbsp shredded coconut If you use cooked beans, then half a jar is sufficient. (I use Azuki beans which are good for weight loss, but you can use any beans you like). Method Put all the ingredients together in a bowl and mix through with clean hands and form into burger patties. Fry gentlly on low heat for about 20 minutes – no oil is needed. Serve with rice and salad and you will have one mean veggie burger feast for your family or friends! For dessert you can make a Chia Pudding it is very easy – here’s how: Chia Pudding Ingredients ½ cup of coconut milk or any other vegetable milk you like 2 tbsp Chia seeds Pinch of cinnamon Method Mix all ingredients well together to form a think gel. Add to your favourite fresh fruit and there you have one easy-tomake, healthy, nutritious dessert! If you would like any more information, please contact Jon Stark by email – Johnstr22@gmail.com

KEY FEATURE Cultural Differences When I first moved to Spain, many moons ago, I really didn’t think it would be such a shock to my system. I had been fortunate to learn Spanish from aged 11 so the language wasn’t a problem but I soon realised that there was and still is quite a cultural difference between the British and the Spanish. The first thing I found difficult to cope with was the loudness of the people. Admittedly I came from a little village in England, a regular sort of household with Mum, Dad and brother where probably the noisiest time every year were mine and my brother’s whoops at the fireworks in the garden on Bonfire night. So to hear the Spanish so loud even just talking amongst themselves in small groups was a surprise. I was told it’s because they all come from large families and to make themselves heard they have to shout louder than their siblings! Maybe that’s true. Another surprising thing I noticed is the total disregard of the Spanish for the indicators in their cars. Do they even know what they are for or do they think they are just some little adornment on the dashboard? And do they really believe that touching the bumpers of the car in front or behind is their indication that they have parked as close as they can? And since when was a zebra crossing or even a roundabout a permitted place to stop to have a chat with a friend who is just passing in his car or even a convenient place to park while just popping in to buy their lottery ticket? I have also observed what seems to be a very heated debate of drivers out of their cars stood in the road after one car has cut the other up which I am convinced will end in a punch being thrown but no, it ends with a slap on the back and a cuddle - best of buddies! A question I also always ask is why, if there is an accident on the other side of the motorway, the traffic on the opposite side also comes to a standstill. I have decided that the Spanish can’t help but stop and gawp! My parents always taught us to say please and thank you and these words do exist in the Spanish language but surprisingly are seldom used. How to instantly spot a Brit abroad - waiter please may I have the bill. The Spanish language is very flowery but at times being direct seems the only natural approach - waiter, bring me the bill or waiter, what do I owe? And to not have to pay until you are about to leave? On a visit to England after living here for a few years I couldn’t understand why the bartender held his hand out for payment as soon as he had served me my drink, took a while for me to realise. Often though, this abruptness in the language seems totally forgotten. I can’t begin to even remember how many times
By Anne Hernández - COSTAHELP I have stood behind somebody at a supermarket till while the cashier and the customer discuss at length Mrs Garcia’s latest ailments and how Juan’s cousin’s wife’s sister’s neighbour has had to endure some very detailed misfortune lately. And talking about supermarkets what happened to a queuing system? Wait for your turn I was always told and we do. Amid lots of foot stamping and huffing and puffing, I don’t deny, but we wait patiently! Cuisine is another surprise. Fish that hasn’t been ‘properly’ filleted and still has its tail, head and eyes gazing up at you on a plate. Garlic and red wine with everything, bread without butter, mashed potatoes so runny that you need a spoon to eat and a small but very strong black coffee served in a glass followed by a brandy chaser for breakfast? I lived in Tenerife and we even used to have banana omelettes! The Sunday lunch with every single member of the family present lasting a good 3 or 4 hours in a very noisy venta and then the ritual paseo to either show off their Sunday best clothes or to walk off the huge amounts of food eaten. And 5 meals a day with the last one eaten around 10pm and then bed at 2am or later even on weekdays? I do sometimes forget the time and after dinner at around 11pm, time when I might be thinking of getting ready to go out, I might suddenly decide to call a friend in the UK only to find that my call actually woke them up! And what about the summer weekends at the beach when the entire family - all of them, pitch a tent and take up a huge amount of space and then proceed to erect a barbecue, beds and sunshades for the children and the elderly family members and then the younger ones take up yet more space playing football, complete with proper portable goals, until after the sun has gone down? And what’s with all the aimless walking up and down the seashore, what are they hoping to find? The Spanish undoubtedly like partying and there’s probably a local fiesta to be found every weekend. Apart from the crowds and the noise again, all the ladies of any age ably show off their flamenco dancing skills and the copious amounts of alcohol consumed but never seeming to get drunk? I couldn’t imagine all of us Brits proudly displaying our Morris dancing abilities or not getting drunk. Yes, there are certainly lots of cultural differences and after many years here I would probably be considered a very odd Brit if I returned. I wouldn’t be able to get out of the habit of kissing everybody for a start! Viva España!

KEY FEATURE Salon Varietes Theatre The summer break has enabled some changes and updates to be made at the popular, English-language Salon Varietes Theatre in Fuengirola, the most visible being some new seats. Not all the seats have been replaced but a start has been made on this on-going process! A less visible improvement has been the installation of a new rig. This apparatus is necessary to support the weight
of lighting and scenery and was necessary as the present supports were not up to the job required. The box office has been refurbished too, making life much easier for the staff to do their job. Below are details of the forthcoming performances for the Autumn 2016 season at the Salon Varietes, together with booking details.

KEY FEATURE Dario Meets Sharon Stone and Dr Mary Atkin at the Peace, Justice and Security Foundation Gala I recently returned from the inaugural Gala held in the beautiful City of The Hague for the Peace, Justice and Security Foundation as I had been asked to create a new song/anthem especially for them entitled “Ever Changing World” with talented David Mairs who wrote brilliant lyrics. We were therefore invited as guests, but sadly David could not make it. I confess I was rather tired out by it all, as there was so much to do beforehand to get there, but in the end it was well worth it, as the gala was a great success, attended by about 200 of the most esteemed personages of the legal and political world, the one exception being my good self, who was simply an artist, and TV Medium, Carolien De Bree, who was also invited to attend. Before entering the main hall, we were met by dozens of photographers and videographers who captured images of the participants and celebrities in various combinations. On show there were also some works of art to admire that would be auctioned later in the evening to increase the resources of the new Foundation. The Foundation is the brainchild of a few determined individuals operating in The Hague in the international institutions for peace and security, in particular the International Criminal Court. Two I can mention are Florence Olara and Philipp Amann. The Foundation aims to raise awareness of cruel, oppressive and sometimes horrible events in the light of law, justice, peace and security around the world, by taking concrete actions. Sharon Stone made an amazing speech during the event and took over an auction with such effect and professionalism that we were left speechless by her talents. When I met her informally, she was really humble and gentle. In attendance were High Commissioner, Zeid Ra’ad Al

Hussein, President Fernandez of the ICC, Director of Europol, Rob Wainwright, Professor Dr. Mary Aiken, and Dr. Marco Gercke giving incredible speeches on global issues and supported by Cinema for Peace. Great speeches were made by event organiser, Florence Olara, and Victor Ochen of the PJS Foundation, the founder of the African Youth Initiative Network (AYINET). The youngest African Nobel Peace Prize Nominee made a fine speech, as did Germany’s leading actress, Katja Riemann, winner of national and international awards and we, the audience, were touched by the very emotionally-charged, but true story of Emanuel Jal, who very modestly told the audience about some of his experiences as a forced child soldier in Africa and is now teaching children how to find their lives again with the help of education, care and love. I was introduced to Supriya Vani from India, the author of an upcoming book on Sixteen Nobel Peace Laureates including interviews with them. Surprising, but a little proud, I was one of a tiny tiny handful who was presented with a signed copy of a new book entitled “The Cyber Effect” written by Dr Mary Atkin, one of the world’s top Cyber criminologists. The CBS Hollywood Series “CSI: Cyber,” was inspired by her work and she is an advisor to Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre and works with multiple global agencies from INTERPOL to the FBI and the White House. She likes the anthem “Ever Changing World” created for the foundation. All in all, many great inspiring speeches were made by many top personalities, some of whom had suffered from wars and deprivation. The experience was not only inspiring for those of us in the audience, but truly humbling to realise how lucky and easy we have things in our own lives. KEY SPORTS Billingham´s Olympic Bonanza - The Rio Report The Russian team were initially kicked out, then reinstated. No Great Britain team in either the men’s football or basketball. Tom Daley moaning about his shorts being too skimpy. The athletics and the golf were the main attractions of the Olympics for me. Off to a flying start with Adam Peaty setting a new World Record in the men’s 100 metre breaststroke. Shall we watch Louis Smith in the gymnastics? Ooh yes, he’s on between 8 and half past. At 10.35 Louis Smith finally mounted on the pommel horse. Smith built up momentum with a series of moves and twists, doing handstands and splits, but unfortunately had to dismount prematurely. Great Britain finished fourth, perhaps a third was the best they could have hoped for. A GB woman toppled off the beam, a medal prospect canoeist came last in his heat. Brazil drably drew with Iraq 0-0 with each scoring chance repeated 6 times from various camera angles. I mean, is there any need to see a ball from a corner hit the roof of the netting from 6 different angles? Brazil conveniently edged Spain right on the buzzer in the men’s basketball. It was a great night for Egyptian handball apparently on 11th August. And a 191 yard 7 iron hole in one by Justin Rose, the first in Olympic history. Golf was back in the Olympics after a 112 year absence. The tournament was played in Rio de Janeiro on a specially built course because golf isn’t big in Brazil. The UK women’s high jump record was broken on 8 August when Katarina Johnson-Thompson leaped 1.98 metres. The jump also equalled the world heptathlon best. Earlier the women’s 10,000 metres record had been smashed by 14 seconds when Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana ran 29.17.45. Jo Pavey finished back in 15th, more than 2 minutes behind. However, she still ran a season´s best of 31.33.44 – does this make everything alright then? Saudi Arabia fielded a woman athlete, Kariman Abuljadayel, in the 10 metres dressed in full robes and hood. She finished 7th of 8 and clocked 14.61 seconds. Mo Farah retained his 10,000 metre title but Greg Rutherford could only take bronze in the long jump behind the Americans with 8.29 metres. Jessica Ennis-Hill, meanwhile, took silver in the heptathlon losing out by about 20 or 30 points. 2 eagles kept Justin Rose’s charge up in the golf. In the final

round, there was never really more than a shot between him and Stenson. They were both on 15 under playing the final hole but Stenson’s pitch let him down and he three-putted. Rose didn’t, he pitched to three or four feet and holed for the Olympic crown. ‘Super Sunday’ sensationally bought 5 gold medals, 2 for Max Whitlock in the gymnastics – floor exercises and pommel horse, a gold in the men’s cycling, Rose’s golf gold and Farah’s 10,000. During the early hours of the following morning, Andy Murray edged over with Argentina’s Del La Potro by 3 sets to 2 in a very tough match. The men’s 400 metres World Record was also smashed on Sunday - Wayde Van Niekerk of South Africa running 43.03 seconds. A bronze and a new British record of 74.54 metres for Sophie Hitchin in the hammer while Adam Gemili was squeezed out of bronze by France’s Lemetre lunging on the line – they both finished on 20.12 seconds. ‘Only’ 19.78 seconds for winner Usain Bolt. A very, very slow men’s 1500 metres final won by an American in about 3 minutes 50. Would Coe have lapped this baby up in the day or what? The 10.01 ran by a GB athlete, a time which would have comfortably won gold in the 1980 men’s 100 metres sprint final was only good enough for fourth in the 2016 semi-final. The GB relays were a mixed box of tricks – bronze’s for the women’s 4x100 metres and 4x400 metres while the men got the baton round this time but could only finish fifth and the 4x400 metres were disqualified (pettily I thought) for starting outside the changeover zone. Farah predictably won his 5,000 metres and there were plenty of other golds too in events like individual show jumping and women’s hockey. Ruth Betia of Spain won the women’s high jump with 1.97 metres, a cm less than Katerina Johnson-Thompson in the heptathlon. The games were a resounding success for Great Britain. As the colourful closing ceremony brought the games to an end, I thought of how poor Shara Proctor was in the long jump and Adam Gemili shaking his head a lot. Great Britain finished second in the medals table with 67 (27 gold, 23 silver and 17 bronze) and above the might of China. The United States won with 121 medals (46 37 38).

New for ‘Encore’ are a marina deck, from which you can windsurf, kayak and pedal boat; Sky Bar, an alfresco spot for drinks; and the Grand Salon, showcasing talks from a range of experts, including explorers, chefs, scholars and performers and culture. LAST TIP: So many cruise ships available - so how do you choose? For generations of families travelling together, I would suggest the larger ships as the facilities for children or teens are far superior. For under 3’s a family member has to remain. If you prefer more British atmosphere, then look at lines such as Cunard, P & O and Fred Olsen. If you have any questions for Janis, please email the magazine at keymagazine@yahoo.com.

KEY PETS How to Choose a Good, Dry Dog Food Firstly, as a dog dietician, I am open to many types of dog diets including dry foods, moist foods, home-cooked meals and raw food diet but in this issue I will cover just dry food. In layman’s terms, here is my advice on how to pick the highest quality, healthiest dry food in your budget. Firstly, ignore labelling on the front. It is often misleading and just a marketing ploy. Also don’t be fooled by well-known companies that you see on TV adverts. Go to the ingredients and following my top tips of the 5 main ingredients. 1. Ingredients 1-2 should state a named meat or fish such as beef, lamb, tuna, chicken etc. Avoid foods that do not name a meat and just use poultry or meat (as an example). 2. Ingredients 3-4 should be vegetables (avoid corn, wheat or beet pulp). 3. Ingredients 4-5 – whole fruits. 4. The lesser the amount of ingredients, the better quality the food. 5. Choose lamb, beef or fish if dogs are suffering with allergies or sore, itching skin.
32
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
By Joanna the Dog Groomer and Dietician
Ingredients to avoid if possible 1. Corn or soy. Both are known allergens. Soy can wreak havoc on the endocrine system. 2. Animal fat by-products – i.e. unwanted parts of the animal such as beaks, feathers, feet, tumours etc. 3. Artificial colours, flavours, preservatives known as BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin and Propyl Gallate. 4. Grains – carnivores have no biological requirement for grains and they are the leading cause of skin and coat problems in dogs. Shocking as it may seem, only 10% of dry foods on the market are high quality, using human-grade ingredients that are classed as balanced and healthy to feed long term and they are often up to 4 times more expensive than lower quality dry foods. However, in dogs suffering with health issues both internally and externally, a switch of diet to an expensive brand often saves the owner huge amounts of money as health improves, meaning less vet trips. I offer full support to my dog grooming clients and specialise in the treatment of skin and coat problems using grooming, natural products and full dietary help.

KEY PETS Thinking about getting a Dog? Part 3 Do you have someone to look after your dog when you travel or if you’re working out the house for 10hrs a day? Think about the people you know who have or love dogs, and would be reliable enough to take care of your dogs when you’re gone. Dog walkers are invaluable for when you’re busy through the day but a really great boarding facility is essential to know about before you travel or have an emergency. Will you be a conscientious and responsible dog parent? Apart from some of the more obvious things such as giving your dog lots of love, exercise, companionship, a nutritious diet, regular health check-ups, spaying/neutering, and having a microchip all part of being a good owner, what about training?! Yes training, from the very start is a NECESSITY! Everything you do is teaching your dog something whether you want it to or not. If he is peeing on your bed or chewing your Jimmy Choos then he has learnt that’s the thing to do and not been taught effectively where he should go. If you want a drama-free puppyhood and your dog to be cool and sociable, not trying to kill other dogs or eat people! Maybe you want him to chill out at the café – get a trainer! Seek out a class for you and your dog to attend or get a trainer to come to you at home – it is never too early OR too late to start! Older dogs can also have

Your dog is yours for life It’s a long list of questions, but it’s important that you think through the responsibilities associated with bringing a dog into your life. Too many dogs wind up at already overflowing rescue centres because people didn’t ask themselves these questions. Please try to avoid repeating this common mistake. Think seriously about how life will change once you have a dog. Having a dog is incredibly rewarding – if you’re ready for the responsibility. KEY MOTOR Identifying an Unmarked Guardia Civil Vehicle Depending on the role they need to fulfil, the Guardia Civil traffic department has a range of vehicles at their disposal. Sometimes, it´s necessary for them to use unmarked or camouflaged vehicles in the course of law enforcement. In the case of the vehicle pictured with this article, we are looking at a Toyota which is fitted with radar speed detecting equipment, actually the Multanova 6F, and is mostly used for speed checks on major roads. However, there are also other unmarked vehicles on the roads and we´d like to explain some of the identifying features of these cars, not so you can avoid detection if you are breaking the law, but as there have been a few occasions where criminals have pretended to be the police to stop innocent victims and carry out robberies, we want to make sure you know how to identify a real unmarked traffic car that might be trying to stop you. At the front of the vehicle there are blue lights hidden in the grill. These will be illuminated and flash in the event of the vehicle responding to an emergency, or in the event that the officers are trying to stop you. In the front window, on the passenger side, the sun visor has been replaced by an illuminated display. This will display the words “G.Civil”, “Trafico” and “Alto”, or stop, alternating. These words are displayed in reverse, so that they will be visible and easy to read in your rear view mirror. You might also spot other equipment in the window, but remember, the vehicle we are looking at here is a radar car and not all unmarked vehicles are fitted with this type of equipment. As we move along this vehicle, we will see that the officer is dressed in a high visibility uniform, as worn only by the traffic

officers. When the Guardia Civil traffic officers are patrolling in unmarked cars, they will always, without exception, be wearing a variation of this type of uniform, with high visibility features. It is important to note though that other departments of both the Guardia Civil and police use unmarked cars, such as detectives for example, but those officers will not be wearing this uniform. Another important point is that it is only Guardia Civil traffic officers who are wearing the high visibility uniform who are allowed to take money from you as payment of traffic fines. In the event of an officer from another department coming across an incident on the roads, they will always call for the traffic department to take charge, issue fines and take any money that may be due in fines. Only the officers in the high visibility uniforms bearing Guardia Civil Trafico are allowed to take money, this is important. Looking towards the rear of the vehicle, we can see that the windows are laminated with tinting. This is not an exclusive feature of unmarked or camouflaged cars, but in the back window there is another hidden illuminated display. This display will once again say the words “G.Civl”, “Trafico” and “Alto”, alternating and accompanied by flashing blue lights on the matrix. The cars also carry a detachable rooftop blue light, but it is unlikely this will be used as part of the procedure to stop you. Always remember the key point of identifying a Guardia Civil Trafico Car. The matrix sign in the front and rear and the officers wearing uniforms. If you are ever in any doubt as to whether you have been stopped by a real Guardia Civil patrol, you can always call 062 and quote the registration number of the vehicle, but these key points, we hope, will also help you stay a little safer on the roads.

KEY FEATURE Company Testimonials
By Sarah Shahinian - Group Creator
Why using testimonials on the Facebook group ‘Company Testimonials’ is better than depending on testimonials from your company’s website. Nowadays hardly anyone visits your website purely to write a testimonial unless you ask them to do so, but while on social media, your clients will gladly recommend you; the simple reason is that they are connected all the time, so if they are a member of the ‘Company Testimonials’ group, when you post something they will receive a notification straightaway and most probably give a testimonial. What is the Company Testimonial group and what is its main purpose? It is a NEW group on Facebook with a different concept to others. The idea is to share experiences about businesses and company services from the client’s point of view and vice versa. On the other hand the company will have more potential clients reading about them. How to use it Any business can post there and anyone can put a testimonial in a comment. Companies that post can invite clients or

anyone that has used their service can put a recommendation in a comment. The main purpose of creating the group As Costa del Sol residents we all know how the market is here. Many of us have probably had a bad experience with a dodgy company or person - someone disappears without paying you for your service or someone promises you a high income investment then they quit their job ...I am sure you know what I am talking about. ‘Company Testimonials’ is an excellent place to share your experiences and recommendations to let others know who to deal with and who not to. I remember years back when I helped translate at the SEBEC - European Commission Business Centre for Mid to Small Enterprises I learned about the criteria which companies should meet. KEY COMPUTERS Laptop vs. Desktop By Computer City
When deciding between purchasing a desktop computer or a laptop computer, you’ll need to consider the pros and cons for each. To help you make a more informed decision take a look at the list below, choose what fits your life style the best and remember at Computer City we have a large range of desktop PC’s and Laptops. We can tailor make a PC for you and also upgrade your existing computer. Contact us for more details. DESKTOP COMPUTERS
LAPTOP COMPUTERS
Cost
There are a wide variety of component options available for desktops, allowing for a large range of prices.
Laptops are more limited than desktops and to a get more powerful laptop, the price is much higher than if you were to buy a desktop computer.
Processor
Desktop processors are a little bit larger in size, but this also means the desktop processors can be more powerful than laptop processors.
Laptop processors are still limited when compared to desktop processors. Gaming laptops can have an equal performance, but have a much higher price.
Keyboards and screens
Desktops can make use of full size keyboards, including a number pad. Desktop monitors can be 15” or larger. It is possible to hook up a desktop to a TV.
Screen sizes typically range from 10” to 17”. Smaller laptops with the 14” and 15” screens typically have smaller keyboards and don’t feature a number pad on the right side.
Gaming
Desktops are capable of using high-powered video cards that have higher power requirements and require better heat reduction/dissipation. Due to the space in a desktop and the capability of using 1000+ Watt power supplies, virtually any video card could be used in a desktop, including two or more video cards at the same time.
Physical space is limited in a laptop, which can limit the graphics capabilities. While higher-end laptops can provide better than average graphics for gaming and CAD-based applications, the heat reduction/dissipation is limited by the space in the laptop case. Power is also limited which doesn’t allow for video cards needing those higher amounts of wattage to run.
Upgrading
Most components in a desktop are easily removable, making it easier to upgrade and since desktop cases are usually much bigger, they’re easier to work in when doing any upgrading.
Memory and hard drive are about the only components that can be upgraded in a laptop. The remaining components are either built-in and are not removable.
Portability
Desktops are larger and heavier than laptops and you have to separate monitor/keyboard
Laptops are easy to take from place to place and are very portable due to their size and weight

KEY LAW EU Data Protection Regulation:
By Victoria Anzola – www.seqqe.com
Time to Get Organised in the UK or The Great Escape? While the government is working towards its Brexit strategy, you will need to carry on with the day to day collection, use and deletion of personal data, and prepare for the future. Whatever happens with Brexit, the GDPR will be in force in the UK from May 2018 and organisations will need to comply at that point. Ashley Madison site used a fabricated security trustmark. Canada’s Federal Privacy Commissioner and Australia’s Privacy Commissioner have concluded in their joint investigation into Ashley Madison’s 2015 data breach that the Torontobased company had serious faults in its data security. For example, the company had inadequate authentication processes for employees accessing the company’s system remotely, and there were poor password management practices. The company, which markets itself as discreet service for people seeking to have an affair, has now entered into a compliance agreement with the Canadian Commissioner and signed an undertaking with the Australian Commissioner, making the recommendations enforceable in court. Canada’s Commissioner, Daniel Therrien, says that the in-

vestigation Report offers lessons for all organisations subject to Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), particularly those that collect, use or disclose potentially sensitive personal information. The Commissioners say that “harm extends beyond financial impacts. Discussions around harm stemming from data breaches often focus on identity theft, credit card fraud, and similar financial impacts. While impactful and highly visible, these do not represent the entire extent of possible harm. For instance, reputational harm to individuals is potentially high-impact as it could have a long term effect on an individual’s ability to access and maintain employment, relationships, or safety depending on the nature of the information. Reputational harm can also be a difficult form of harm to remediate. Therefore, organisations should carefully consider all potential harms of a breach of personal information in their care.” Data Protection Laws are here to stay, in the EU, USA, Canada, Australia, APEC countries and Latin America. As technologies globalise, so do the legislators and the laws governing data, big data and the new technologies. The clock is running, we better take this matter in a serious way.

KEY FEATURE Getting Things Organised After the Long, Hot Summer
By Anne Hernรกndez, Costahelp
Some might say thank goodness we have left summer behind because not only has it been an incredibly hot and humid few months but in Mijas we have been fortunate to escape any bad campo fires. It is now time to get things ready for next summer. Urbanisations should tend to the compulsory annual cleaning of their fire-belt corridor, close up the community pools for the winter, remove leaves and blockages from any rain drains, make good any repairs and have a general tidy-up. Homeowners should look to repair or re-seal any double-glazing
and attend to cracks in the buildings. The rains will surely come soon and water will find its way into buildings very easily and create damp problems - prevention is always better than cure and much less costly! Gardens will be needing a hard prune but be sure to deposit the garden refuse at an authorised point. If any of you are heading home for Christmas, be sure to leave your house secure and leave a key with a neighbour just in case of emergencies. Flights are cheaper the sooner you book them so book early and if you have pets, ensure they are up-to-date with all their injections if you intend to put them into kennels during your absence.

available to duplicate is costly and in some cases can cost more than the price of the vehicle. In some cases where a car key has been lost and the vehicle is parked in either a parking bay or underground car park with no way of towing the vehicle to a secure site is costly again. At Security of Spain Locksmiths we have the most advanced car key duplication, key cutting machines and transponder cloning devices available for copying car keys for 95% of vehicles on the road today, up to and including 2016 models. In some cases we will need the vehicle to be present as we part clone the new car key and also have to part programme the new car key in the vehicle. Most of the tasty Lebanese favourite dips are available such as Hummos, Mutabal, Labne, Tabuleh etc plus other salads as well as various starters such as Falafel, Kebbeh, Musakaa, Arayes etc. Main courses include Shawarma, Chicken or Lamb Skewers, Kafta etc. Home-made Cous Cous is sometimes available but I would suggest you phone to ask. After your meal you can retire to the comfortable terrace to enjoy a pot of mint tea and a selection of Baklava and share a Sisha pipe. Take away service available. Thank you Ali. We really enjoyed the meal and the belly dancing and now the Cous Cous as well.
Japanese Restaurant Ginza Wide range of authentic Japanese food including Sushi and Sashimi and Teppanyaki Show plus much more in its sophisticated surrounds. Ginza is in Jardin Botanico, La Cala. Decorated to a high standard. Highlight is the Teppanyaki show where exotic food using the best quality ingredients is masterfully prepared on a hot steel plate right in the middle of the table. The chef will show you the unforgettable cooking display called “Teppanyaki”. Pepper pots etc are expertly thrown in the air and you must watch the trick with the eggs. Try to catch a bit of the omelette in your mouth when cooked! This is great fun to experience something a bit different or particularly if there are a few of you. Try one of the specially selected Teppanyaki menus which are great value for money. Ginza is open from 12.00 to 24.00. Places around the Teppanyaki spectacle are limited, so it is advisable to book. Food here is consistently of the highest standard, excellent service, Teppanyaki show makes for a very entertaining night out. Other starters include a selection of favourite Thai soups, Special Thai Chicken Salad, Glass Noodle Salad etc as well as Chicken Satay, Thai Spring Rolls, Thai Fish Cakes or better still, the Mixed Starter for 2. Main courses are made from Chicken, Beef or Lamb, Duck, Prawns or Fish. Personal recommendations include Chicken Green Curry, Crispy Roasted Duck with Thai Sweet Chilli Sauce & Basil Leaves, Stir-fried Prawns with Spring Onion & Ginger and Sweet & Sour Prawns (Thai style has a completely different flavour). There is a good selection of different rice and I particular enjoy the Fried Rice with Eggs. Lemongrass also serves a very good Pad Thai Noodle dish. Thai food can be VERY spicy, so best to ask for a little bit of spice the first time to see how you go! The Mango with Sticky Rice for Dessert is also delicious. The venue has a closed, glass curtain, outdoor terrace and limited seating indoors (which is air conditioned) so booking is recommended as Lemongrass is already very popular. Although entrance to the restaurant is suitable for the disabled, access to the toilets could prove a challenge. Please check that delivery is available. *Lemongrass may close for one night a week during the off peak season.

KEY FEATURE Airport Assistance As many of you may know, I broke my ankle last year and still cannot walk the long distances required in airport terminals, so this information is first-hand experience from a recent trip back home. I have found that in both Malaga and the UK (Stansted in my case) the assistance to the airplane has been faultless. However, the problem comes on landing. There seems no problem disembarking you form the aircraft and taking you to the terminal building, but thereafter the service fails miserably. At the Stansted end we were just dumped at the terminal and it was implied that it was hit and miss whether anyone would ever come to take us through passport patrol, on to baggage reclaim, through customs and out of the airport to waiting family which is a very, very long walk. After about half an hour somebody eventually came when they saw we were not giving up. It appears the problem is once again staffing shortages and there is nobody to complain to
70
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
apart from sending an email after the event - I eventually got a response after a week. Arriving back in Malaga it is little better although you are taken in a buggy through passport control and then again left to your own devices. Again it is a very long walk to the luggage carousel and even further to get out of the airport. Airport assistance staff were very unhelpful to start with but we did find a very nice supervisor at the airport who called them 3 times and they eventually came grudgingly. The secret at Malaga is firstly to say that you need to be taken to where your relatives are meeting you or the airport parking bus stop and secondly not to sign the paper they give you until you have been taken to where you want them to drop you off. Once you have signed that bit of paper, their job is effectively done in their eyes. They have to bring it back signed, so don’t be fooled into signing it as you first get on the buggy or if you have been “dumped” miles from the exit.
