KEY BEAUTY Hair Tips from Hair Magic

By Tracy, Hair Magic

Here is some advice that might help you from colours to cuts and condition.

cause a lot of damage and will need to use good moisturizing creams to keep your hair looking healthy and shiny.

BRASSY HAIR TO CLASSY HAIR Q My ash blonde hair has gone brassy. What can I do? A This can be treated easily. First I would recommend you have a trim to remove all the dead ends and then treat your hair with our pigmented shampoo. This is a purple pigmented shampoo, anti-brass treatment. It will knock out any canary yellow tone. Your hair will be refreshed, restored and baby blonde once more.

FROM BLONDE TO DARKER Q I have had blonde hair for too long now and would like to go darker. A Again, I advise you to go to a professional as this can be very tricky. In the long run, with a darker shade your hair will be in much better condition. It it is not done properly, it can fade very quickly and look patchy. Also sometimes it is necessary to pre-pigment the hair before putting a darker colour through. Without this you could run the risk of ending up with green hair! If you have any questions or need some advice about your hair, please come and see us at HAIR MAGIC or email us at tracy@hairmagicspain.com.

I JUST CAN’T AFFORD IT! Q I fancy putting some coloured pieces into my blonde hair for a real change but still want to look really blonde. I don’t have enough money to go to a salon. How can I protect the pieces I want to stay blonde when I use the other colours to prevent them leaking onto my blonde hair and looking a mess? A Please don’t try this yourself. If the brown hair leaks onto the blonde, it will cost you more Euros to put it right. I would suggest you go to a salon’s trainee or junior stylist. It will cost a fraction of the price and there is always a more experienced member of staff overlooking what’s going on. If you do decide to do it yourself, try using conditioner on the blonde hair to form a barrier against the other dye. I CAN’T GROW MY HAIR Q I want to grow my hair longer but whenever I try, it loses all its thickness and falls flat. How can I stop this? A There are a few ways to grow your hair. Layers always work well as they take some of the weight that is pulling your hair flat. A fringe can also help to add shape around your face. HAIR EXTENSIONS are another way to add volume. Your hair will look longer and healthier with just a few hair extensions. DARK TO LIGHT AND LIGHT TO DARK Q My hair has been chocolate brown for some time now and I really want to go light again. I don’t want to wait for it to grow out. What can I do? A I would strongly advise you not to attempt this yourself. There are a few options. We can put some hi-lites in to lift the colour or we can use a colour cleanse but this will only give you one shade lift., whereas hi-lites can give you 2 or 3 shades lighter. You must try to be patient though or you can

KEY BEAUTY Make-up Tips

By Giselle Beck-Davies

If your eyes water after you have applied your make up, then you must use a waterproof mascara and dab a little Vaseline at the outer corner of each eye so that any moisture/tears from the eyes will simply run over the surface of the Vaseline and not smudge or disturb the eye make up underneath. A foundation with an SPF and some protective ingredients is a must in order to defend the skin against damaging environmental factors In order to keep your make up expertly in place try a setting mist and fix spray which you can spritz over your entire face once your make up has been applied. To keep lips soft and supple use a little of a hydrating face mask and dab onto and around your lips, allow it to absorb before applying a moisture rich lipstick. Apply a little loose shimmer onto the tear duct area of your eyes to reflect light and contrast the effect of dark shadows. As brows must be immaculate to frame and complement your eye make- up, make sure you keep them tweezed and trimmed remembering that the brows should begin above the tear duct, arch above the pupil and end in line with the outer corner of the eyes. To give extra definition to the brows, it is important to use a brow pencil. Apply firstly against the brow hairs and then keeping the pencil finely sharpened to give a nice fine stroke and finish by using a brush applicator to subtly groom, set with a little wax or gel. Contouring will give shape and definition to any face shape. Try

lightly dusting a little matte bronzer 2-3 shades darker than your foundation along your cheek bone. Start at your ear and blend to the apple of your cheek. Gradually build up the product until you get the desired definition and to complement the shading, you can sweep a little highlight across the top of your cheek bones. If you are going to be out and about in hot weather conditions it’s important to keep skin extra hydrated in order to prevent dehydration which leads to a blotchy, uneven finish on your foundation. KEY HEALTH Injury or Joint Replacement Rehabilitation After injury or joint replacement, we will usually undergo physiotherapy to improve mobility of the body. However, the capability of physiotherapy is somewhat limited, as it only deals with movement, and does not work with the quality of the body’s soft tissues. Most people do not understand that soft tissue injury e.g. muscular strain, can take up to 6 weeks to repair, and joint replacement, longer. When we sustain injury, over a short period we will begin to change our posture to accommodate the problem, which quickly becomes a long term change, even though the injury heals. By changing our posture, we start to put strain on other areas of the body which can lead to pain in non associated areas. For example, an ankle injury can lead to a lower back problem. Joint replacement involves massive invasive surgery. As well as the postural changes, the soft tissues around the replacement i.e. muscles and tendons, go into acute tension (this is a form of body self protection), affecting the pain and mobility of that area. Three months after this type of surgery, you should be looking at massage to release this soft tis-

sue compaction. Soft tissue release through massage, and working with postural changes helps the person to return to normal mobility and movement. Most muscular strain, e.g. you strain you lower back when bending over, is indicative of already existing muscular tissue tension in the area prior to the injury. Massage is not only curative but is also preventative. A regular massage treatment, every 6-10 weeks will keep your body relaxed and prevent most muscular injuries from occurring. STOP PRESS... KEY HEALTH Why would you consider coming to see an Osteopath?

By Chris Howard

If you have some pain or discomfort that’s worrying you or preventing you from living your normal life, then you should come to see an osteopath. That’s because (and of course I am biased!) I believe that osteopaths provide you with the best entry level of differential diagnosis in a clinical setting than any other comparable medical profession available. (i.e. what is the problem/diagnosis? but more importantly what it’s not). This is what your really get when you see an osteopath. Osteopaths are trained to be a bit like a detective, trying to establish a working diagnosis for the patient’s pain or discomfort by using a process of questioning (diagnostic sieve) and physical testing, to eliminate the possibility of there being any serious pathology or illness before starting treatment. Osteopathy’s main focus is on the structural and functional working of the body as a whole, i.e. something can’t work properly if its injured or damaged.(whether it’s your elbow or you heart) and because the Musculo-skeletal system, your body, which the osteopath examines, supports and connects all the other systems of the body together into one whole, (endocrine, hormonal, respiratory, cardio-vascular, gastrointestinal and neurological) any internal disorder and disease is reflected from within the body and can be tested

for and detected by a trained and skilled osteopath using medical clinical differential diagnosis. An osteopath can take your blood pressure, pulse, listen for any heart abnormalities such as vale dysfunction or arrhythmia, examine you for circulation problems or anemia, examine the base of your eyes using a special torch for other evidence of blood pressure or illness and so on. In other words, osteopaths take ALL the information they have gathered to try to discover and deal with the cause of the discomfort rather than just treating the symptoms. This makes them safe as they are aware that they can’t treat everything and will refer patients on to other medical specialists if necessary for second opinions, blood analysis/x-rays/ ultrasound/scans or other forms of treatment. Osteopathy is a distinctive health-care profession recognized by an Act of Parliament (1997) giving Osteopaths independent professional medical status. In the next issue I will explain what happens when you first visit an osteopath.

KEY HEALTH Zirconium Crowns

By Chris Weir, Sonrisa

There have been many different types of crowns used in dentistry, but they all have had disadvantages. The strongest and most durable crowns have been the porcelain fused to ceramic type. The biggest disadvantage of these crowns is the aesthetic appearance, they don’t transmit light like natural teeth so they are not as natural looking, and after a few years they show a black margin which is unsightly. The all porcelain crowns have weaknesses and are prone to fracture under stress. But now we have a new crown material called Zirconium. It is very strong and can be used anywhere in the dentition. Advantages of Zirconium: 1. a) Very strong material b) Has very good aesthetics c) The cement line is thin and doesn’t show a black line d) Less tooth has to be removed for the crown preparation e) It is biocompatible and non allergenic f) It is translucent like natural teeth The material, Zirconium, is often referred to as ceramic steel because it is so strong. The colour is white/ivory which is

18

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

ideal for replacing tooth substance. It has high hardness and tensile strength and is a good insulator which reduces the chance of sensitivity. 2. We have had over 20 years experience of the material because it has been used in the medical profession for hip replacements with no adverse reactions, and is bio-compatible. It is made from zirconium oxide, which is a ceramic material which was used extensively in the aero-space industry. The crown is made up from a thin shell of zirconium (a coping) with a softer porcelain layer fused on top to give a very strong natural looking restoration. Zirconium can also be used for multi-unit bridges to replace missing teeth and for veneers. 3. The bottom line is they are they more expensive. Yes, they cost a little more than porcelain/metal ceramic crowns, but they will last longer and you won’t get the horrible black margin showing after a few years. One of the most common reasons for replacing porcelain/metal ceramic crowns is not failure of the crown, but the unsightly appearance of the black margins that show after a few years as the gum margin recedes.

KEY HEALTH Thermal Auricular Therapy Hopi Ear Candles (often shortened to Ear Candles) are hollow tubes traditionally made from organically grown flax, extracts of honey, beeswax and herbs. These candles provide a non-invasive treatment of the ears which are used in a variety of conditions in a practice often know as Thermal Auricular Therapy. The use of ear candles is thought to be thousands of years old and was seen in Egypt, Greece and Rome, although it is the Native American Hopi Indian tribe that had the most recent influence on modern Europe and helped to term the phrase ‘Hopi ear candle’. The treatment is very relaxing. The client need only concern himself with lying fairly still in a comfortable position whilst the Hopi candle is gently inserted in their ear. When lit, the candles have a slight sucking action often referred to as the chimney principle, drawing out impuri-

By Pat Kaines ties to the surface where they can be gently removed. Some of the wax can be found in the lower section of the candle after removal from the ear, or some could even work its way up to the surface 24 - 48 hours later. The rising air inside the ear sets up a vibration which gently massages the eardrum. This can help to regulate the pressures involved inside the ear. The flow of air within the candle creates a circulation of concentrated vapour. This is both soothing and calming and protects the irritated areas. The session is not complete until I have given the client a facial massage using the Manual Lymphatic Drainage routine. This helps with further drainage both of the ears and sinuses and increases relaxation. So why not give me a call and book a session and discover for yourselves this wonderful and gentle treatment.

KEY SPORTS Football Round-Up

By Steve Billingham

ENGLAND v HOLLAND - WEMBLEY February 29 An experimental side skippered by Scott Parker although Steven Gerrard had returned. There was no Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck played as the lone striker with Ashley Young and Adam Johnson as wingers. Scott Parker, again with a good engine, made some good blocks and Johnson and Micah Richards combined well down the right hand side. Johnson looked prepared to run at and twist and turn defenders. Robben put the Dutch ahead after 57 minutes with a jinxing run and low left footed finish and Huntelaar made it 2 with a close range header a minute later. Chris Smalling was involved in a nasty collision and stretchered off and Frazier Campbell of Sunderland came on for his first cap. Gary Cahill pulled a goal back for England after 85 minutes then Ashley Young equalised, clipping the ball over the keeper after Phil Jones had laid it back to Theo Walcott for an exquisite first time through ball. Robben curled his second in after 91 minutes albeit with a deflection to make it 3-2 to Holland. The England side was arguably too experimental with too many youngsters in. MANCHESTER UNITED v ATHLETIC BILBAO EUROPA LEAGUE 8TH March Bilbao is a useful side containing several Spanish internationals. However, after 21 minutes and a good build up, Hernandez’s shot was parried and Wayne Rooney followed up to give United the lead. Fernando Llorente levelled up for Bilbao with a header just before half time off a Sussieta cross. De Marco after some neat passing and a chip through put Bilbao ahead on 71 minutes with a left foot finish into the corner. Then his razor blade shot on the turn was well saved by De Gea but Munain followed up and buried. A careless handball at the other end led to a penalty. This was con-

verted by Wayne Rooney to make it 2-3. In the return leg in Bilbao, Fernando Llorente scored with a cracking volley off a long ball after 23 minutes precisely placed into the far corner. He had been a handful both games. This left Manchester United needing to score 3 goals to qualify. Ireola’s jinxing run twisting and turning Rio Ferdinand ended in a shot narrowly wide after 53 minutes. It says a lot when the right back is as attacking and enterprising as this. A deflected De Marco shot after 65 minutes sends United packing. ‘Rooney isn’t with it tonight,’ remarked an observer. Then he goes and sticks a 25 yard curler in with 10 minutes remaining. GOLF The Andalucian Open which took place on the Aloha Golf Course in Marbella between March 15 - 18 was won by Frenchman Julien Quesne (150-1) with a 17 under par total. 2 shots back, Italian prodigy, MatteoManassero, was runner up with Spaniard Eduardo De La Riva third on 14 under. One of the favourites, Miguel Angel Jimenez, finished tied 7th on 11 under with second favourite Robert Rock back in tied 17th on 8 under. Then it was over to Agadir in Morocco the following week for the Trophee Hassan 11 tournament. Robert Rock took 11 at the fourth hole in the first round which all but ended his Masters qualification chances. The tournament was won by Northern Ireland’s Michael Hoey with a 17 under par total. THE ROCKET IS BACK! Ronnie O’Sullivan captured his first ranking title for 2 years in February, beating Stephen Maguire 9-7 in the final of the German Masters which was held in Berlin. The next tournament on the snooker calendar was won by Ding Jun Hui who beat Mark Selby 9-6 in the final at Newport on February 19.

KEY FEATURE Special Tribute for Annemarie Philipps, Musical Director of the Choir & Orchestra “Collegium Musicum Costa del Sol” On 29 March 2012, the Marbella Town Hall paid a special tribute to Annemarie Philipps in respect of the 20 years’ work she has dedicated to Collegium Musicum as Musical Director. Many of Annemarie’s friends were gathered for the presentation of a special honour handed to Annemarie by the Mayor, Angeles Muñoz. In her tribute the Mayor referred to the fact that it is people such as Annemarie, who show such dedication and hard work that make Marbella and the Costa del Sol a better place for all of us. Other tributes were spoken by Count Rudolf von Schoenburg (the Honorary President of the Society), Don Cándido Fernández Ledo of the Banús Foundation, the German Consul, Guenther Necas and Delyth Bressington, the President of Collegium Musicum. All expressed their appreciation for the wonderful work Annemarie has done over so many years for Collegium Musicum and the magical way in which she brings together people from so many different backgrounds and nationalities and directs them in music-making of such a high standard. The members of Collegium Musicum have also celebrated this mile-

stone. On March 18th some 100 members and guests enjoyed a wonderful Gala Evening held at the Mijas Play Restaurant in La Cala de Mijas in honour of Annemarie. There was a special jazz session played by 5 members of the Brass section of the Málaga Orchestra who came all the way to show how much Annemarie’s contribution to the musical life on this coast is appreciated by the professional musicians as well as our own amateur members. After speeches made by Brigitte Sociás, the longest-standing member of Collegium Musicum, and Count Rudi, the formalities concluded with the President, Delyth Bressington, making a presentation to Annemarie. Then they danced the night away!!!! Collegium Musicum holds rehearsals every week in Fuengirola and are currently rehearsing for their performances of Mozart’s “Requiem” at the beginning of June. They are always happy to welcome new members into both orchestra and choir and at present are specifically looking for string players. KEY FEATURE Dario Meets Englebert

By Dario Poli

A regular visitor to Marbella and the Costa del Sol is Engelbert, a name I first heard when I was sitting in my father’s car heading into the City of Leicester in 1967. The car radio was playing and we heard a most wonderful voice, singing a beautiful new ballad called, “Please Release Me.” My father, who had been a trained Opera singer in his younger days, simply said to me. “Dario you have just heard a voice in a million the best quality voice Britain has ever produced. This voice and that song will be a massive success. Remember my words.” His prediction was correct, because Engelbert rose from the tough beginnings of his singing career as Gerry Dorsey, to one of the biggest International Superstars of our time and “Please Release Me” has remained one of his most recognised hits and all time favourites with his devoted fans. As Arnold Dorsey, he was one of ten children born in Madras, India, to British Army officer Mervyn Dorsey and his wife Olive who moved to Leicester and my connection with Engelbert began, when his brother Erwin, walked into the popular restaurant that I owned at that time, situated in the town centre opposite BBC Radio Leicester. We hit it off immediately and Erwin and I became good friends and he came with their father” Mr Dorsey Senior“, a proud and upright man in stature and in character and on one memorable occasion, met my father. Both men took to one another immediately. They shared several things in common one being the adoration of Engelbert’s superb voice, and the second that they both had a passion for “arm wrestling”. My father and Mr Dorsey senior though retired, were physically strong. Both men had never been beaten in arm wrestling, even against younger and fitter athletes, but in the restaurant neither was able to put one another’s arm down, so each contest ended in a draw and a friendly celebration followed, with a good glass of red wine on the house. Engelbert’s career continued to go from strength to strength. He swept every audience before him with his great voice, natural charm and good looks, combined with good management and Engelbert’s unfailing instinct for choosing good songs. Hit followed hit. “The Last Waltz,” “Quando, Quando, Ouando,” “Spanish Eyes,” “Les Bicyclettes De Belsize,” “A Man Without Love,” “Red Roses For My Lady” and many more successes followed. “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You,” “Ten Guitars,” “There’s a Kind of Hush,” “Il Mondo (My World),” “Misty Blue,” “Yours Until Tomorrow,” “After the Lovin’,” “Wonderland by Night,” “A Man Without Love,” “From Here To Eternity” and many more. From Japan to the Americas; everyone wanted Engelbert, the singing sensation, and in Leicester the people were so proud of their homegrown star. He has never forgotten his roots and his family, and still

resides in the Leicestershire countryside. During this fun time with the Dorsey family, Erwin invited me to accompany him to the Isle of Man to help him make his return to show business, as he had been a very good singer in his own right. I agreed to go with him and that decision changed my entire life. This meeting with Eddie thrust me into the spotlight of a world of music and show business, and as a young man in my early twenties, I was hooked and later I teamed up with my sister Delia and formed the singing duo Dario and Delia and my eyes still filled with stardust, became a professional artist and commenced our own climb for recognition, performing around the world, in most of the best-known venues with TV and radio appearances to our credit and working with some of the best names in the business like Buddy Greco and Dave Allen, but I kept in touch with Erwin (Eddie Dorsey). Years passed and I did not meet Engelbert until the nineties. I had just co- written a piece of music on the subject of Nostradamus with the International record producer Roberto Danova and once again, I met his brother Erwin purely by chance in a local Leicestershire pub. Erwin introduced my music to Engelbert who invited me to his home which had a room lined with gold discs. I liked him from the word go as he immediately put me at ease during our chat. On the advice of Engelbert, a recording of an exciting, innovative and original new piece called “Nostradamus” was produced and being with him over this period, I learned a lot from him about what it takes to achieve success. I was invited to join him, his beautiful wife Pat, his son and personal manager Scott to Hamburg, and saw him perform live to huge audiences. It was sensational; the German public went crazy for him, and the audience, totally captivated by his performance showered literally hundreds of “Red Roses,” on the stage. He is the consummate professional of everything that he sang, said and did, and Engelbert has received scores of “Gold and Silver Record Awards” for successful singles and albums and has collaborated with almost all of the most famous names in the music industry, with regular appearances on TV, all over the world. He also supports a charity in America. His family are hospitable people in an unpretentious way, helping those who genuinely need them. But I sincerely believe that Engelbert’s voice is the most potent source of healing I know. Long may he continue to use his voice to bring joy to others? To top his outstanding career the BBC has recently chosen Engelbert to represent the UK for Eurovision Song Contest, so we, and all his fans wish him well on the night! “I consider myself fortunate to have had the privilege to have met Engelbert, this great performer of music”

KEY FEATURE Buyers Warned to Avoid Cutting Corners on Property Purchases

Potential buyers of property in Spain were warned on 21st March to avoid cutting corners when purchasing a home or holiday apartment. Estate agents, lawyers and property developers who offer ways to save money and speed up the Spanish conveyancing system may lead to purchasers ending up with hugely expensive headaches later on, the British Embassy warned. Despite the well-known problems facing thousands of past purchasers of property in Spain, the Embassy is aware that there are still property industry representatives who are trying to tempt future buyers with apparently attractive methods to secure their dream homes more quickly or cheaply. Such offers may in fact be very bad value. “You should exercise extreme caution if an estate agent, promoter or lawyer urges you to cut corners to save money or time”, said Embassy property adviser, Alex Brown. “The Spanish property conveyancing system is different to the UK. When you choose an estate agent, promoter or lawyer to help with your purchase, check that they are qualified, reliable professionals and have significant experience of operating in Spain and expert knowledge of how the system works.” Although the vast majority of British property owners enjoy life in

By British Embassy Madrid Spain and have had no problems, thousands of British ex-pats are facing some kind of legal problem with their homes, some because they were advised to cut corners during the purchasing process. Many others are facing difficulties through no fault of their own, caught up in the complexities of Spanish planning regulations. “There is a wealth of information on the Embassy’s UKinSpain website“, said Alex Brown. “We strongly urge people to check the advice in full, make sure they use fully qualified, reputable advisers throughout the purchase process, and avoid any kind of ‘dodgy deal’ that could end up costing huge amounts of heartache and hard-earned money later on.” The advice came as thousands of Britons headed for the annual ‘A Place in the Sun’ show in London from 30th March until 1st April, aimed at potential purchasers of property abroad. The show’s website www.aplaceinthesun.com/ offers information about legal and tax issues when buying overseas. Further Embassy advice on buying property in Spain can be found on the UKinSpain website at: http://ukinspain.fco.gov.uk/en/help-forbritish-nationals/living-in-spain/property-in-spain.

KEY FEATURE Finding and Using a Language Tutor Whatever route you have chosen for your learning, you might want to consider adding a language tutor into the mix. This way you will be able to regularly practise speaking (much more so than you would in a group lesson) and you’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. You don’t have to take lessons every week; many tutors will be happy for you to schedule the occasional lesson as you see fit, or possibly fix up an e-learning arrangement where you can send them questions or exercises for them to mark and comment on. A good tutor will be able to advise you on learning materials, and will adapt to your learning style, concentrate on your areas of concern, and answer each question as it comes up. That is the beauty of one-to-one tuition: it’s flexible, and personalised. Where Can I Find a Good Tutor? You may find tutors advertised in local newspapers. A fantastic resource is language-school-tutors.com, which matches students with teachers all over the world and is free for students. Because there’s a tiny fee for tutors, it’s possible that it will appeal most to professionals for whom this is an investment in a career rather than a part-time hobby, so there’s an element of filtering out people who are just doing “a bit of tutoring on the side”. Of course, if you’re looking for a Spanish or French tutor, you could also try emailing me – languagetuition@gmail.com. Word of mouth Perhaps you know someone who is taking lessons; it’s even more likely that there will be someone in your wider network who can help. Post a Status update to your Facebook profile: “Anyone know…”? Or, even better, tweet the question: that way you are not limited to responses from people to whom you are linked with directly. You may well get responses from language tutors themselves searching twitter for new students. Although that can feel like being spammed, don’t dismiss them – it’s worth investigating what they have to offer. How Do I Know If They Are Any Good? Many people prefer to use native speakers, and understandably so. Their accent will be flawless, their grammar effortlessly correct. But non-native speakers, on the other hand, know what it’s like to learn the language themselves and are perhaps better aware of the potential difficulties and how the language relates to English, so don’t dismiss them. It’s best, though, if they have lived in the country whose language they are teaching you, and/or spent some time intensively studying it at university. If they have been recommended via word of mouth, you already know how good they are. They

32

may also have references posted up on their LinkedIn profile, or these could be available by email if you ask for them. Other factors to consider include how long they have been teaching (though some are naturals from day one), and how much they are charging: too low a fee can indicate that they do not think of themselves as a professional. It’s essential that you have a good rapport with them: those first faltering words in a new language can be nerve-wracking, and it’s important to feel safe. Bearing that in mind, you might want to ask for an initial telephone conversation or meeting over coffee, or a sample lesson, though you will usually be expected to pay for this. Trust Them! Language tutors are professionals. And it may seem obvious, but they are also two other things: linguists, with an understanding of how languages work, and teachers, who understand how people learn best. Feel free to ask them if you are not sure what the purpose of a particular exercise is. But if they say you need to learn your verbs, they have good reasons for this; if they recommend you don’t yet read a certain text, or tell you that it will confuse you if they answer a certain question you have and they would prefer to wait until a later lesson, trust them. There is method in their madness. Homework Don’t fall into the trap of thinking an hour’s lesson a week ought to do the trick. Imagine if you didn’t clean your teeth in between visits to the dentist’s: how painful would those visits be? So if you are having regular lessons, make sure that at least a couple of times a week you open your book and read over the vocabulary, or even better do the exercises your tutor will set if you ask for them. Life is very busy for many of us, so don’t set unrealistic goals – even ten minutes twice a week will mean that you progress faster and maximise your investment in the lessons this way. (For many people, “little and often” is better than one big chunk.) And don’t leave it till the night before! If you have learned something new in your lesson which your homework is designed to reinforce it’s best to look at it while the tutor’s explanation is still fresh in your mind, and while you still have time to email them with any questions. Regular homework really does make a difference. Want to win a copy of Conquering Babel? The competition is hosted from my blog - conqueringbabel.wordpress.com/ competition. KEY PETS The Importance of Worming your Puppy Correctly with a Proper Treatment & Time Schedule

By Graham Stark, Macfin Rottweilers

Disgusting as it may seem, many puppies are born with worms, round worms, usually Toxocara Canis. This type of worm can do all sorts of damage to your new puppy’s intestines, not to mention the fact if it is not tackled promptly, can result in death of your new pet. Another fact is that children can become infected with it. The prime reason for puppies being infected is due to lack of care by the owner of the mother, She must be wormed prior to breeding, one day before the calculated birth date of the litter, then again one day after the birth of the pups. If this procedure is not carried out, puppies can become infected with the larvae while still in the womb. This particular worm migrates through the animal’s body, finds a nice spot to hibernate and becomes dormant, waiting for the right time to wake up, when it completes its migration. When a bitch becomes pregnant, these dormant larvae reactivate, migrating across the placenta and infect the puppies. During the final migration stage, the worms pass through the lungs of the pups, from there, making their way to the intestines, where their development is completed, become adult worms and start laying eggs, thus the cycle starts all over again.

ated on a patient suffering from this dreaded illness, without finding parasites present.

The worm eggs infest the environment of the puppies, ready to infect a new dog or worse an unsuspecting child. Many so called experts claim that parasites are not a major problem to adult health. Ask yourself how many times you have taken a worming treatment or zapped yourself to rid your system of such parasites. Then consider the claim by leading cancer surgeons, that without fail, they have never oper-

It is in the interest of humanity that anyone breeding dogs or owning a dog no matter how small, should fully understand the importance of using a proper worming procedure on a 3 to 4 month schedule. We use only Drontal Plus which may be a little costly but for sure works, as before we have used many different products recommended by various vets, only to find they were not suitable, namely Piperazine, Panacur, to name a few. REMEMBER always clean up behind your dog no matter how small, as your dog can be leaving those dangerous eggs all over the place, infecting children and other animals. Also those expensive yearly injections for Rabies and the 7-series Cocktail can be totally useless if your dog has not been properly wormed. For the same reasons if your dog for some reason becomes ill, it is much simpler to treat a dog of any kind who is worm free, than one who has never been wormed correctly.

KEY FINANCE Sighs of Relief in Athens The sighs of relief in Athens and Frankfurt were almost audible in the UK last week after private investors agreed to a deal on Greek debt which allows the next bailout to go ahead. It was touch and go whether they would. Fortunately 86% of them did and participation will increase to 96% when ‘collective action clauses’, put in place to avoid any deal being scuppered by a minority, are implemented. The deal is harsh. Private investors swap existing bonds, for new ones worth less than half of the originals. On top of this the new bonds pay less interest and will be repaid later. But it means that Greece will avoid defaulting on bonds due for repayment next week. Things might be alright for a bit in Europe now, but there’s still a long way to go before the euro’s sovereign debt issues are solved and we can really break out into song. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted to keep the UK policy at 0.5% in March, making it three whole years that the rate hasn’t moved and the outlook suggests that rates will stay put for a good while yet. It is not so clear for asset purchases and with so much uncertainty around the ‘wait-and-see’ approach seems the most sensible option, at least until the impact of October and February’s schemes are assessed. News from the Bank of England’s Q1 Inflation Attitudes Survey revealed a drop in households’ expectations of inflation in the year ahead from 4.1% in November, to 3.5% in February. UK service sector continues to grow but lost some momentum. The services Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) slipped from 56 in January to 53.8 in February. Despite the monthly drop, the indication is

40

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

By Moneycorp that the sector is still expanding. The survey showed new orders increased which helped to boost employment. This in turn sent the confidence reading to its highest level in a year. Nonetheless, the external environment is challenging and rising oil prices have forced firms to absorb higher costs. Unfortunately, this is unlikely to be enough to offset government spending cuts, which present a sizeable headwind to the labour market. Eurozone rates stay put but economic forecasts fall. The ECB also left interest rates unchanged last week in spite of the pressure on inflation from higher oil prices. Eurozone rates have been at 1% for three consecutive months now. President Draghi is confident that the second round of loans to banks has averted the immediate threat of another financial crisis in the Eurozone and “removed tail risk from the environment”. But it hasn’t prevented the ECB from revising down its forecast for GDP growth to between -0.5% and 0.3% in 2012 and between 0% and 2.2% in 2013. The US service sector expanded in February. The Institute for Supply Management’s index of non-manufacturing activity rose to 57.3 points, up from 56.8 in January. This is the fastest rate of expansion in a year. US labour market improves again. The US economy added more than 227,000 jobs in February. The unemployment rate stayed at 8.3% but this is still well below last year’s rate and at its lowest since 2009. The persistent improvement in the US labour market over the last few months will help to cement confidence that its economy is gathering strength and will continue to recover.

KEY LAW What to Do When the Community Does Not Want To Start Legal Action in Court

By Jose Luis Navarro, Intercala’s Solicitor and Property Administrator

It is quite common to face cases in which it is clear that the community should start legal action against some owners, but for whatever reasons this never happens.

outstanding community fees pending payment but the community does not approve of taking them to court; b) There are some owners who have made some works in their private flats and have changed the configuration and aesthetics of the building, etc.

For instance: a) There are many owners who have some

It is also common that the actions to be taken are not against any owner of the community but a third party. For example: a) The community paid for work that was not done properly and you want to claim for rectifying it; b) There are construction defects in the building but the community does not take legal action against the developer; c) The community is entitled to ask for compensation as a result of some damage caused by a neighbour or another third party etc. In all these cases, the Spanish Civil Code provides that any owner of the community is entitled to act in court on behalf of the interests of the community, but we should take into consideration that all the advantages he may get from the court decision would remain for the benefit of the community. On the contrary, this owner will have to suffer and to pay for all the inconvenience and consequences if the court ruling goes against the community. This means that if the owner wins the case on behalf of the community, he will not personally gain any advantage, but, conversely, if the owner loses the court case, he will have to pay for all the costs because the community would not be obliged to pay anything. Taking all of this into consideration, it would be worth taking legal action on behalf of the community when the situation seems to be clear, but this weapon should only be used in a reasonable way, so, as always, take proper advice before going ahead.

KEY FINANCE Funeral Plans When most of us first came to live here in Spain, possibly not one of us gave much thought about the fact that we would eventually be dying here. Probably it never even occurred to us that our relatives or friends back in the UK would end up having to make funeral arrangements. The cost of a funeral has historically increased above the normal levels of inflation and this is a situation that is predicted to continue. A funeral costing just £850 fifteen years ago would cost nearer £2,750 now. It is impossible to say what that cost might be in five or ten or more years’ time.

KEY FINANCE Qrops - The Risks of Doing Nothing Stephen Ward was a member of the UK Government’s Pensions Industry Working Group advising HMRC on the pensions’ legislation changes which introduced Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes (QROPS) in the 2006 Finance Act. He is also the author of the definitive textbook on pension taxation, “Tolley’s Pensions Taxation 2011-12”. A QROPS is a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme. It is a mechanism that allows an ex-pat with a UK pension fund to transfer their fund to an overseas location. What are the key benefits of a QROPS? The key benefits of having your pension fund in a QROPS as opposed to in a UK scheme include: 1. Greater flexibility of benefits – a higher lump sum can be possible if required. You can now withdraw up to 40% of the fund at age 55, (plus all investment growth), with tax at less than 1% on this amount. And income of up to 15% per annum of the residual fund is now possible. 2. KEY LAW Occupational Health & Safety Having tightened up the laws on Data Protection and Internet Law, the next move seems to be in the area of health & safety in the work place. Below is the first paragraph on the directive and there follows some extracts from the Office Ergonomics Handbook. “Article 40.2 of the Spanish Constitution entrusts the public powers with responsibility for monitoring occupational health and safety, as one of the governing principles of economic and social policy. This constitutional mandate implies the need to develop a policy for the protection of health at work by preventing occupational risks and this Act constitutes its fundamental pillar. This act can be considered as the general legal framework within which various preventive measures shall be developed, consistent with the decisions of the European Union which has expressed its desire to progressively improve working conditions through a gradual harmonisation of those conditions throughout the various European countries”. The table of contents deals with purchasing considerations and how should I sit at my computer workstation, moving on to your chair, your workstation, your keyboard and mouse etc to office lighting, rest breaks, environmental concerns, stress etc. Below is the extract that deals with the question “What is Ergonomics”? Ergonomics can be defined as fitting the job to the worker. Not all workers are the same size and everyone has limits. Ergonomics aims to design workstations, work processes, equipment, and tools to fit you. As a worker, it is important that you know how to adjust your office workstation to suit your needs. If a job does not fit a worker, the worker is more likely to be exposed to risk factors that may lead to musculoskeletal injury. The main ergonomic risk factors in the office include the following: – REPETITION: tasks or body movements carried out over and over again. – AWKWARD POSTURES: body positions which deviate from neutral such as twisting your neck to view your monitor or reaching to use your mouse. – STATIC FORCES: maintaining a position for a prolonged period of time (e.g. prolonged sitting, viewing the monitor with a bent neck, or reaching for the keyboard). Every person responds to ergonomic risk factors in different ways. For example, one worker may have symptoms of an injury while another worker performing the same tasks may not have symptoms. Ergonomic risk factors should be identified and reduced to lower the risk of injury for all workers. Even those workers who are not experiencing pain should take ergonomics

seriously to reduce the risk of developing an injury. Purchasing Considerations When selecting office products, adjustability is a key feature. Even though a product may claim to be “ergonomic”, it may not suit your needs, therefore, BUYER BEWARE. You can use the information in this handbook to determine what equipment you need to make your office fit you, while learning how to appropriately set up the equipment that is currently in your office. Before You Buy Office Equipment – Find out what you need. – Most office equipment has been designed for the average male who is 5’10” while the average female is 5’4”. This means that some chairs and other office equipment may be too large for some users, or too small for others. – Try Before You Buy. Arrange to get samples of equipment from your supplier. – Have your supplier explain and demonstrate adjustment features. How Should I Sit At My Computer Workstation? WRISTS: Keep the wrists in a straight position. Do not bend them up, down, or from side to side. ELBOWS: Keep elbows bent between 90 and 100 degrees (right angle), keep them close to your body, and supported if possible. SHOULDERS: Relaxed (not slouched or raised). NECK: Facing forward and not looking up, down, or to either side. HIPS: Bent around 90 degrees with your thighs parallel to the floor. LOW BACK: Supported to maintain its natural curve. KNEES: Bent at approximately 90 degrees with enough space between the back of your knees and the chair to place your fist. FEET: Resting flat on the floor or supported by a footrest. Fellini’s, the well-known Italian Restaurant at the Aztec Country Club in Riviera del Sol, has been a favourite haunt for many years and indeed celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. We apologise to Dolores for omitting Fellini’s from the restaurant guide in the last issue. The emphasis is on a friendly, family service with reasonable prices but retaining a high standard of cuisine. Summer opening hours are now from 12.00 to 12.00. On the menu at lunchtime are Tapas, Pizza and Pasta etc. In the evenings Fellini’s retains its extensive Italian menu of family favourites such as pastas, pizzas, meat and seafood dishes cooked to perfection all of which is available as take away as well. Our particular favourites from the extensive menu are Minestrone Soup, Antipasto or Spaghetti Pil Pil for starters, Vegetable Risotto, Veal Milanese or any of the delicious pastas or pizzas for main course to name but a few. I am also rather partial to the Veal Saltimbocca. We are now also hooked on Fellini’s Pizzas which are authentic, thin and crispy and we believe the best in the area. There is also a good selection of homemade desserts and a fine wine list including favourite Italian wines. Fellini’s welcomes family dining with several suitable items on the menu for children. Why not celebrate your birthday, Engagement or other occasion at Fellini’s? Buffet or Menu from as little as 12 Euros a head. We hope you and your family have many enjoyable evenings at Fellini’s. For further details view Fellini’s website at www.restaurantefellinis.com. Please book early for the live music show on 27th July featuring Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra as this gets booked up early. Indian Ocean Henry and the staff at Indian Ocean made us extremely welcome from the offset. Henry has a great sense of humour, is mild mannered and I notice how his customers greet him fondly – a good sign as he has regulars. Firstly I must comment on how reasonable the price is, particularly in relationship to the quality of the food served. Too many local Indian restaurants are not at all shy in charging an enormous amount for quite a mediocre meal. Indian Ocean is at Playa Marina and is tastefully decorated. Papadoms were very fresh. I was delighted to see Prawn Puri on the menu and this and the Chicken Tikka for starters went down very well. The other half went for the Bhuna which he thoroughly enjoyed. I decided to go for one of the many specials on the menu, Galina Cafreal, a very tasty Goan curry cooked with toasted coconut, green chillies, ginger, tomato and fresh coriander which was superb. Whilst I really enjoy the traditional Indian favourites, it is nice to see such a good selection of different dishes if you would like a change. Indian Ocean also does it hot if you like to add a bit of spice to your life. Indian Ocean does a free home delivery service in the local area, so if you fancy a night in with a curry, you can have something really tasty delivered to your door. This now arrives punctually with a happy delivery man. I would still advise that you make sure your address and directions are clear and that you leave your phone number. We continue to enjoy our meals from Indian Ocean. Delivery is always with a smile. Indian Ocean is Key recommended. Enjoy al fresco dining during the warmer months. Please see main ad.

Japanese Restaurant Ginza can be found in Jardin Botanico, La Cala. Japanese Restaurant Ginza has been decorated to a high standard and offers a wide range of authentic Japanese food to include Sushi and Sashimi plus much more in its sophisticated surrounds. The highlight of eating at Ginza is the Teppanyaki show where exotic food using the best quality ingredients is masterfully prepared on a hot

steel plate right in the middle of the table and the chef will show you the unforgettable cooking display called “Teppanyaki”. Pepper pots etc are expertly thrown in the air and you must watch the trick with the eggs. Try to catch a bit of the omelette in your mouth when cooked! This is great fun to experience for something a bit different or particularly if there are a few of you. Try one of the specially selected Teppanyaki menus which are great value for money. Ginza is open from 12.00 to 24.00. Places around the Teppanyaki spectacle are limited, so it is advisable to book. A video can be seen on www.keytomijascosta.com/videos/ginza/. Please see main ad.

La Plaza Bar Brian is a familiar face in Cabopino as Brian’s La Plaza Bar is well established. It is in the Plaza just before you enter the port of Cabopino. There is a full menu of exotic cocktails to include Pimms, Sangria, Mohito, Daiquiri, Sex on the Beach etc. Beers, wine, exotic coffees soft drinks and milk shakes are also served. Summer specials Sundowners are priced at only 3.75 Euros and are served from 17.00 – 22.00. They include Sex on the Beach, Tequila Sunrise and Sea Breeze. This is a popular place for a pre-dinner drink or to spend time chilling after you have eaten. Relax with a cocktail or a special coffee. Have a great night out! Key recommended. Please see main ad.

L’Oriental next to the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Benamara for the finest Lebanese food on the coast. Meze unbeatable with many dishes to include humus, kibbe, stuffed vine leaves, tabouleh, falafel, arayes, Lebanese style sausages and many, many more, all delicious and really fresh and this is just for starters. We can’t normally manage anything else but if you still have room, please try Kharouf Mashwi, which is lamb with rice, almonds and pine nuts, simply delicious! There are many dishes suitable for vegetarians. To finish off we always enjoy Baklawa washed down with a nice pot of mint tea. The food is always consistently fresh. Beautiful décor, lovely extensive outdoor terrace with fountain in the summer months. Pop in, you will not be disappointed. Well worth the drive. Belly dancing at weekends. Please ring for details. We love it! Ideal if there is a big group of you and it is a vegetarian’s paradise! Key Recommended. Please see main ad.

Mumtaz is an Indian restaurant in Fuengirola opposite the entrance to the Hotel Angela and has been on the Coast now for over 25 years. Ash, the owner, is always on hand to explain the preparation of all the dishes. He never writes down any order and has not got it wrong yet even when we have had a party of 20! No gimmicks here, just excellent food. Ash is from London and we would say Mumtaz serves the nearest thing to what we would call an “Essex Curry”. The standard has always been maintained since we were first introduced to Mumtaz twelve years ago. Ash explains his secret which is due to the extra time and expense that is taken to ensure that he only buys the best quality cuts of meat available which is reflected particularly in all the lamb dishes, which are as tender as butter. Also recommended are Tikkas, Kormas, Chicken Tikka Masala and Prawn Dansak. For me, Mumtaz nan breads are the best on the coast. This is a simple restaurant, no frills and reasonable prices. Please mention to Ash that you come on recommendation from the Key to Mijas Costa. Please see main ad.

Peppers top floor El Zoco has been well known for many years and has recently been taken over by Big Dave and the family. Big Dave is a real friendly face and is well known amongst the boxing fraternity especially due to fighting the famous Lenny McLean, so the bar is boxing orientated and pay per view boxing is always shown as well as other sports on the plasma screens. Dave and the family are hearty eaters so you will always get a generous portion at Peppers. Open Tuesday to Saturday from 2.00 pm until late serving all home-made traditional English dishes, Traditional Sunday Lunch from 1.00 pm, choice of meats plus all the trimmings from 8 euros. Closed Mondays. Lunch, dinner and snacks are always available and the kitchen stays open until Peppers closes. Weekly specials Tuesdays Drinks 2 for 1, Spirits & Mixers and Draught Lager only – includes Disco and Karaoke from 8.00 pm. Restaurant Al Dente has recently opened its doors in Calypso, Calahonda. Restaurant Al Dente is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and also offers some very appetizing snacks and tapas at good value prices. Daily and weekly specials as well as a daily menu. Everything is cooked to order. To whet your appetite here are some choices from the menu. One of the items on the starter menu is Tostone which is a special large Italian Bread served with Brie and Bacon. We understand this is a must and I am looking forward to trying this. There is plenty of choice of salads including Chicken, Pancetta or Goat’s Cheese and also a selection of soups. As you would expect from a good quality Italian restaurant, there is plenty to choose from in the way of Pasta and Pizzas, but the menu also includes meat and fish options. Desserts include Crepes, Tiramisu and Banana Split and of course your meal can be accompanied by a good choice of Italian wines and Champagnes to suit all tastes and budgets. CAFFÉ STELLA 1 & 2 Many of you will recognize Gino seen in the Key News together with his wife, Stella, and the children. Both restaurants have the same menu featuring Brushetta, Focaccia, Pasta dishes, Salads including Tricolore which is lovely and fresh, Pizzas such as 4 Seasons with a topping of Ham, Mushrooms, Tuna and Artichokes, as well as Chicken Milanese, Pollo Pizzaiola which is Chicken, Black Olives, Tomato Sauce, Capers and Cherry Tomatoes. DA CARLO After an absolute nightmare with previous locals, I am pleased to announce that Carlo and Karen have now relocated Da Carlo at the Doña Lola Resort, Calahonda. The pair of them rolled up their sleeves and were up to the elbows in paint when we caught up with them last month, and this included painting the chairs, a painstaking task! We are pleased that Da Carlo is now up and running again after a very successful opening night on 29th March. As well as the beautifully decorated restaurant, there is also a lovely lounge area where you can sit for as long as you like after your meal and enjoy a coffee and some after dinner drinks. Turning to the menu, Starters include Aubergine Parmigiana which I remember was always delicious, House Pate served with Caramelised Onions and Carpaccio of Beef for example. There is a good selection of Main

KEY NEWS AGE CARE ASSOCIATION

Spring News - Age Care Volunteers recently met with the local Fuengirola chapter of the Spanish Alzheimer’s association (AFA). AFA offers both a day care facility as well as in home assistance for those suffering from various forms of dementia. Age Care has noted an increase in cases of this debilitating condition and the need for assistance in the English speaking senior community on the Coast. Help is needed not only for the afflicted but for their care givers. It is Age Care’s objective to find resources to help both and we are pleased with what AFA has to offer. With support from government funds almost non-existent in this economy, AFA’s construction of a new facility in Los Pacos, Fuengirola has been greatly hindered. However, what they do have at the moment offers an excellent alternative respite for both patient and care giver. Once again, Age Care joins the festivities at the celebration of St. George’s Day at Mezquita Plaza in Arroyo de la Miel on Saturday, April 21st with a stand dedicated to informing the English speaking community of its services. This yearly event hosts a variety of activities, entertainment and hospitality. Mark your calendars for the upcoming events sponsored by Age Care Association: - 21 April - St. George’s Festival, Plaza Mezquita, Arroyo de la Miel - 26 May - Summer Gala Ball, Valparaiso, Mijas - JUNE/JULY - Summer Social Event, Tamisa Hotel, Mijas Costa - 5 September - Shop Fashion Show, Casablanca Restaurant, Calahonda - 28 November - Welfare & Volunteer Holiday Lunch, Tamisa Hotel - 8 December - Shop Christmas Party, Casablanca Restaurant, Calahonda Age Care is always looking for volunteers to join them in serving the senior English speaking community on the Cos-

BRITISH SURGICAL CLINIC

CAMBRIDGE 800 速

New British Surgical Clinic hernia service on the Costa del Sol - The British Surgical Clinic is introducing a dedicated hernia service for patients on the Costa del Sol. Hernias (or ruptures) are a common complaint among men and women of all ages and nearly 100,000 are repaired in the UK each year. The only effective treatment for a hernia is surgical repair. The commonest hernias are in the groin, through the umbilicus and upper abdomen or through previous surgical scars. These days most hernia operations can be done as a short stay procedure and are repaired using a surgical mesh. In 15% of cases this can be done using minimally invasive laparoscopic surgical techniques which means that patients are able to get back to daily life much quicker than historically. Our British trained surgical team has been repairing hernias since 1986. We work with most major insurance companies and can offer extremely competitive

CHRISTOPHER HOWARD

The Caring Osteopath. We are pleased to welcome Chris to the magazine and Mijas Costa, now as a regular contributor of articles which I am sure you will find of interest. I am now also one of Chris’s patients and am learning more about the way an osteopath works with each visit. I was very impressed by the amount of care and attention Chris took over my medical records in the first session. I have really presented him with a problem as my back pain has been on-going for several years but also relates to problems around the front which Chris was able to detect from the first visit. Both my back and front are like a lot of gold chains that have been left in a box for years and when you start untying the first bit, there is another layer of knots underneath. He is really very caring and gentle, a true, qualified professional. I know some of you have already been to visit him. We are really lucky to have him so close to hand. Please see main ad.

is a telecommunications’ operator, created from a group of companies with more than 20 years experience serving our customers in this sector. Due to the expansion of our own telecommunication net, with the most advanced technology combining Wilmax and Optical Fiber, we can provide our clients with maximum quality high speed internet service as well as with a land line connection. Wikiker Broadband’s Wimax internet network has been designed to provide internet to those residences or business that have little or no internet connectivity from the current providers in their area – all without the need of a telephone land line. We have developed our own systems with our own infrastructure which supplies the internet Wimax, without the need for cables or phone lines. This means that we transmit the internet from our base station via radio signals to various masts around the area. The customer then connects on to the system by having a panel/antenna installed which receives radio signal from the closest mast to their property. The only condition is that there must be a clear, unobstructed line of sight between the property and the transmission mast. This will be checked and verified by one of our technical installers. We are so sure of our product that we don’t ask clients to contract for a fixed period of commitment. We look forward to providing you with our excellent services.
