KEY BEAUTY Hair Extensions – What They Can Do For You? People always seem to think long hair is all that hair extensions can give you. This is so not the case. Tracy at Hair Magic has been specializing in hair extensions for 25 years. Extensions can be used to colour and thicken your hair. EXTENSIONS TO COLOUR If you want highlights but your hair is very dry, we can

By Tracy, Hair Magic

use EXTENSIONS for this. We can put as many different colours through your hair without causing any damage and the sun does not fade extensions hair as quickly as your own. This will cost probably less than a full set of highlights, from 50 Euros. EXTENSIONS FOR FULLNESS, VOLUME At HAIR MAGIC we do more extensions to give volume than any other. The great thing about this is you can have two extensions on each side or 40 on each side, depending on how thick you want it to look and how much you want to spend. You can wear your hair up and in any style with these EXTENSIONS and they are almost completely invisible. This can cost as little as 16 Euros (not including blow dry). EXTENSIONS FOR LENGTH If you have fine or thin hair, it is easier to extend than thick, course hair and it’s cheaper as you won’t need many extensions. If these are done correctly, for example not too much glue is used and they are put in with the correct tension, they absolutely won’t damage your hair. If anything, when they are taken out, you hair will be a little longer and in better condition than before as your own hair is being protected from the harsh sun. We have 5 methods, ‘silicone glue’, ‘plastic glue’, ‘ready bonded’, ‘clip-ins’ and the newest method, ‘micro rings’. The important thing is to choose the method that suits you and your hair. The cost for a full, long set of EXTENSIONS depends on the length and amount we put in so it can cost from 275 Euros (excluding cut and blow dry). If you need any advice about your hair in general, the colour, the cut or even a perm, please call us. Consultations are free.

Marbella Beauty Academy visited the Beauty Show held at the N.E.C in Birmingham in May, wow! It was inspiring and exciting to feel the buzz and growth happening in the Beauty Industry. KEY HEALTH Indian Head Massage

By Patricia Kaines

Massage has always played an important part in Indian life, featuring in the earliest Ayurvedic texts which date back over 4,000 years. Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine, the word means ‘science of life’. This system includes the knowledge to bring about physical, mental and spiritual health based upon diet and massage performed with aromatic and herbal oils. Indian Head Massage, otherwise known as Champi, springs from a rich tradition of family grooming. The techniques were originally developed by women who used different oils to keep their hair strong, thick and lustrous. In India, head massage has been performed as an integral part of treatment given by barbers and masseurs. It became a normal custom so that people from the king down would have someone tend to them. Treatments would differ from the massages performed by women, in that they were mainly invigorating scalp massages designed to stimulate and refresh the individual and not as part of a beauty treatment.

14

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

These skills have evolved through the ages and have been handed down from barber father to barber son. The females in the family have also kept the tradition of hair massage and grooming by passing it down from mother to daughter. Indian Head Massage, as practised in the West, was brought to England by a physiotherapist, Narendra Mehta during the 1970’s. He recognised the additional benefits of incorporating massage to the upper back, neck, shoulders, arms and face to relieve tension in the whole body. It is the perfect stress buster – deeply relaxing and nurturing and yet wonder fully invigorating. During the treatment, the client sits fully clothed in a chair whilst the therapist uses a range of massage movements. Working with a firm but gentle rhythm to un-knot blockages and to relieve the build up of muscular tension. So why not treat yourself to this ancient form of treatment which only takes about 40 minutes. Call me Patricia Kaines 666 170 868

KEY HEALTH What to Expect When You Visit an Osteopath for the First Time

In this edition we will look at what to expect when you visit an osteopath for the first time. (The information in brackets represents only a few examples in each case). Osteopaths follow a code of confidentiality so everything about your health and life history remains private. The first appointment can be up to an hour and is separated into various parts the first of which is general information gathering. Within the first minute or two of meeting, an astute osteopath will have observed things like your gait, posture, handshake, which side you favour or weightbear on, what type of movements you avoid, your manner of speech and general posture etc. (for present pain, past injuries or trauma, any evidence of neurological deficit, weakness and coordination, Parkinson’s disease, previous mild strokes, depression etc ). An osteopath can also get information just from the appearance of your face and hands (including things like osteo or rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid dysfunction, anemia, heart and liver problems, hereditary syndromes and diseases and so on).

By Chris Howard back of your head or on both sides or just on one side can have very different diagnosis and this will affect the osteopath’s thought process and type of further questioning and examination that follows. The next part is general questioning (it’s not as bad as it seems!) Your history of accidents, operations, illnesses, medication, investigations (x-ray etc), previous treatments, stomach, heart and lung problems all help to get an overall view of your present state of health which is then followed by a physical examination (posture etc.) where the osteopath gains new information and helps to prove or disprove the “diagnosis” he/she has started to formulate from the first part of the information gained. I will talk about this in the next issue.

Once as comfortable as can be (some patients can’t sit or stand very well when they first arrive!) the second part begins where personal details are recorded and questions about your work (standing or sitting for long hours, driving to visit clients, using machinery or the computer, amount of time on the phone, level of responsibility and stress etc) and hobbies, sports and relax time (walking, golf!, gardening, watching TV etc) all help to give the osteopath a good insight into what sort of things your body has been going through on a daily basis. The next part is the differential diagnosis or “nitty gritty” of the reason why the patient is seeking help, relief and advice. (Where and what type of problem/ pain or discomfort is it, - sharp or dull, - episodic or constant-localized or general - how long have you had it - when and how did it start did it start suddenly/accidentally or appear over time for no real reason - have you had it before - what aggravates or relieves it - does it affect your sleep – does medication help etc.). This is where the osteopath is starting to evaluate the patient and beginning to construct a “working diagnosis” and beginning to think about what they may like to examine further (i.e. neck range of movement, or blood pressure etc) to prove or disprove some possible explanations for the patient’s discomfort (i.e. if you have headaches to the top or

KEY HEALTH Getting Your Holiday off to a Good Start

By Michael Izon, Horizon Therapies

It has been shown that it takes two weeks away from work and home before you can start to really ‘chillax’ (a new word! A mix of chill & relax) and enjoy your holiday. It certainly takes a few days to unwind from the stress of work and slow the pace down, and even then, you still carry the stress in your neck and shoulders as well as lower back.

that a combination of techniques can be both therapeutic (without pain!) as well as being relaxing. Fusion Massage is designed specifically to release the soft tissue tension in the body, but, without the level of pain usually associated with a deeper, therapeutic treatment. It is also relaxing and rejuvenating.

Massage at the beginning of your vacation can not only release the tension in your neck and shoulders, but can also release the pent up stress and allow you to enjoy your vacation sooner and better! It will also release tension and tiredness from traveling, and give you a little selfish time to treat yourself away from the husband/wife/kids!

With a proper consultation including bio-mechanical and postural body analysis, a treatment can be designed specifically for you, dealing not only with any aches and pain, but also getting to the root of the problem. The heart of the pain is not necessarily the heart of the problem!

It is a common misbelief that massage is either painful (sports & deep tissue techniques) or superficial and only relaxing (beauty salon and beach). Most people are not aware

16

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

Remember, you don’t have to be injured or in pain to have a massage! It is both preventative as well as curative. Stay in the very best of health!

KEY HEALTH Bruxism (Teeth Grinding) Bruxism is the grinding of teeth, mostly during sleep. It can cause facial pain and headaches. It is often triggered by anxiety and leads to poor quality sleep and damaged, severely worn teeth. Bruxism encompasses a range of related behaviours including teeth grinding, gnashing and clenching of the jaws. It is usually sub conscious behaviour during sleep and affects 8-10% of the population. It is most common in 25- 44 year olds. Types of Bruxism: 1. Awake bruxism - involuntary clenching of the jaws. 2. Sleep bruxism - automatic teeth grinding with rhythmic jaw muscle contractions. Awake bruxism can be caused by antidepressants, recreational drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy, Parkinson’s disease, depression and major anxiety. Asleep bruxism can be caused by disturbed sleep, related to sleep talking, can be linked to sleep apnoea, stess and anxiety and is more prevalent with alcohol and caffeine. Effects of Bruxism: Headaches, aching jaws, earache, limited mouth opening, sleep disruption to both self and partner, tooth mobility, temporo mandibular joint disorders, and excessive tooth wear and breakage.

18

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

By Chris Weir, Sonrisa Treatment: The only proven treatment for bruxism is a form of mouth guard or occlusal splint. Sometimes a mandibular advancement device (anti snoring) can help and possibly hypnosis. The mouth guard is most successful as it protects the teeth from excessive wear, reduces jaw muscle activity, cushions the temporo mandibular joint and stops the noise of grinding. Hypnosis may provide some additional relief with patients suffering from anxiety related disorders. Do I suffer from Bruxism? 1. Do your jaw muscles ache in the morning? 2. Do you have difficulty eating first thing in the morning? 3. Do your teeth have premature wear? 4. Do you suffer from frequent headaches and facial pain? 5. Does your partner complain of grinding noises when you are sleeping? If you have answered yes to some of these symptoms you are probably a bruxist. You can get immediate relief from most of the symptoms of bruxism by wearing a mouth guard every night in bed. Then you will need to repair the severely worn teeth, which may involve new fillings, or crowning the teeth to restore the shape and form of your teeth and bite. In the more severe cases, full mouth crowning may be necessary to restore the teeth back to their original shape and size and restore the bite back to normal.

KEY FEATURE Ask Joy

By Joy Fahey

We are delighted to welcome Joy Fahey to the magazine. Is something troubling you or getting you down? A problem shared is a problem halved. Take this opportunity to get your worries off your chest. If you’re having challenges with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, help is at hand.

but it will give you time to have a rethink and look for something more permanent. It will help to update your references and a constructive way of occupying your time and proving that you want to work and have skills to offer. Other possibilities would be helping out on a community project, a charity or hospice this would stand you in good stead even if it were part-time.

For over 15 years Joy Fahey has been guiding people towards finding solutions. She is an NLP Practitioner, Spiritual Life Coach and Author working with many people all over the world. Ask Joy for advice to common problems and seek the support, kindness and help you deserve. See more at www.joyfahey. com or contact Joy at transformoneself@gmail.com.

There are many English projects going on along the coast. There are many different websites you can look at, if you do a Google search you’ll be surprised at how much is happening.

In this issue, Joy deals with a very topical subject, that of unemployment here on the coast, and here is her advice on some measures you can take to move forward. Dear Joy I have been through two jobs in just one year. I moved to Spain with my first job but I quit because I did not receive the hours they’d promised to me. The other I was fired for data entry “errors” which actually may have been made by lenders going back into the system changing numbers I had endorsed. Problem is, with such short periods of work in addition to a termination, I feel it is working against me securing new employment and I don’t know what answer to give when asked why I left my last job. Please, please help with any answers you might have. I would really like to stay in Spain but know it’s quite difficult here to get a job, I have been out of work for 8 months now and my savings won’t last forever! Jenny Dear Jenny, I’m sorry to hear that as a result of unfair treatment you’ve had difficulty finding a new job, but you’ve taken a great step forward in writing to me. As for how to answer that question, “I was blamed for an error someone else committed” seems to cover it. There are still good opportunities in Spain especially now the summer is coming, many companies are employing people for the summer season. It’s important that you find yourself some employment as quickly as possible as you are well aware. It might not necessarily be something you want to do long term,

20

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

Another approach is to talk to agencies, especially ones offering temp-to-perm work. Again you can find these by doing a search on the Internet. That way you get the agency’s support and you get to “try before you buy” so you can find a company and work that suits you while still getting paid; you have the agency with all its contacts wanting to find you a job, and short-term work will help to dilute the impression given on your CV by the two jobs in one year. Making your CV more skills-based and giving less emphasis to start and end dates could be helpful too. Lastly you might even consider going back to the UK for a while, it doesn’t have to be forever but you will have access to retrain and there are more possibilities. This is all very practical advice to get you working again asap, however it’s good to have a look at what you really love doing and what you feel passionate about, together with what your skills are. This is something you can be thinking about and perhaps make a list and some notes. Most importantly focus on all the things ‘you have’ and feel good about. This keeps you positive and increases your energy and the Universe will sit up and notice and send amazing things in your path! You’ve made a great start and well done for having the initiative to write in! The main thing is to keep trying, stay positive - and believe in yourself. Good Luck and Much Love Joy If would like Joy to help you to solve a problem and you don’t mind sharing it with our readers (name withheld), then please contact Joy transformoneself@gmail.com and you might find your question dealt with in future issues of Key to Mijas Costa.

KEY FEATURE Summer Charity Galas The Costa del Sol is blessed with more than a great climate considered to be probably the best in Europe. Andalucia with its multicultural mix of local inhabitants and residents many from Northern climes, has produced a fascinating mix of diversity and creativity. One important outcome of this inter-action is the amount of time and care groups of volunteers have in helping those who are in dire need, sick or not, so advantaged in the social and lifestyle benefits we enjoy and often take for granted. These dedicated people come from all walks of life and backgrounds, but share a profound feeling to help those less fortunate than themselves. There are many worthwhile charities along the coast, some quite simple, involving just a few persons, to the larger and often more glamorous fund raising organisations such as The Children for Peace Onlus, The Rhys Daniels Trust, Positively Pink, and the Concordia Aids charity. Some of these charities like FAMA, help distressed animals, others Cancer and aids sufferers and the mix is quite astonishing, but all driven by dedicated individuals who wish to make a difference to the quality of life of others. As the summer is now approaching, the charities really swing into fund raising action creating and publicising the events that raise much of the needed revenue for the year. One I will be attending is the UNESCO recognised charity based in Rome. The Children for Peace (ONLUS) is an Italian NGO founded with the express purpose of assisting children worldwide who are in need of fundamental survival support. This year on the 23rd June, a Benefit Concert will be held at the Hotel Puente Romano in Marbella situated in Puente Romano Tennis Club. Its energetic President, Debra Mace, will host the concert, skillfully supported by Vice-President, Lamia Khashoggi, and performing live will be world famous international Spanish soprano, Montserrat Caballé, Russian tenor and superstar, Nikolay Baskov, and soprano, Montserrat Martí. The event will attract a glittering array of celebrities, stars and royalty from all parts of the world and is a unique, not to be missed opportunity, to hear the singing

By Dario Poli of these fabulous artists. I wrote the music Corazon for this charity so it is particularly close to my heart. The Rhys Daniels Trust’s Annual Butterfly Ball is a British organised charity that I enjoy immensely, driven forward by their determined organizer, Patti Senker, and her team, supported by Max Clifford and this year the event was held on Saturday 9th June for the first time this year at the beach-side Hotel Beatriz Palace & Spa just outside Fuengirola. This charity attracts the celebrities from the world of British show business and sport like Des O’Connor, Bobby Davro, Chris Tarrant and Chris Eubank. The Rhys Daniels Trust provides free, self-contained accommodation close to specialist children’s hospitals in the UK for families to use whilst their desperately sick child is being treated in hospital. The Butterfly Ball in Spain is one of the Trust’s most popular fund raising events and comes at the end of the Max Clifford Celebrity Golf Challenge. Last but not least, is the well known Concordia Summer Gala held annually at the Marbella Club Hotel on the 21st July, that is a charity working with Aids sufferers which has gained international recognition and support, led and inspired by its indefatigable President, Princess Marie Louise of Prussia. Never to be forgotten is the fact that all these charities succeed because of the efforts of individuals who give so much of themselves. And one of these persons, is super Welsh tenor, Stephen Lloyd–Morgan, who generously donates much of his free to time to assist charities in fund raising events and was heavily involved in the raising of much needed funds for the recent Haiti earthquake disaster. He has just produced his latest album In My Father’s Footsteps, which will be released to raise money and awareness for the charity Tenovous and Cudeca, the cancer care hospice, founded by its President, Joan Hunt, O.B.E. We wish them all a very successful summer and thank them for the good works they are performing. www.marbellamarbella.es

KEY SPORTS 2012 World Snooker Championship and Golf Round-up

By Steve Billingham

2012 World Snooker Championship (April 21 – May 7), The Crucible Theatre, Sheffield The Rocket Flew Ronnie O’Sullivan won the 2012 Snooker World Championship, beating Ali Carter 18-11 in the final. O’Sullivan was a deserved winner, looking a bit sharper and playing with a bit more zip than the others to lift his 4th title. There were 5 Chinese players in the tournament plus a Chinese woman referee. Stephen Hendry made a 147 in round 1, demolished reigning World Champion John Higgins 13-4 in round 2 in what was surprisingly their first ever meeting at The Crucible and then retired after the quarter final against Stephen Maguire who beat him 13-2. Luca Brecal was, at 17 years and 45 days, the youngest ever competitor at the event while Matthew Stevens reached his first semi final since 2005. Welsh qualifier Jamie Jones put out 2005 Champion Shaun Murphy in round 1 and went on to reach the quarter final on his Crucible debut before going down 11-13 to Ali Carter. In round 2, Carter had overcome a 9-12 deficit to pip Judd Trump 13-12 in the match of the tournament. Trump needed 4 snookers – and managed to get 3 of them before Carter edged home.

quipped Peter Alliss wisely as a chip sloped off the back of the green. The tournament was won by Bubba Watson who beat Oosthuizen at the second play-off hole. A very attacking hooked 9 iron of 130 - 140 yards set him up for the win. Lee Westwood finished tied third with a total which included 3 missed short putts, one from 18 inches. Sweden’s Peter Hansen also finished tied third. Westwood also missed a six footer for an eagle and a tie of the lead with Oosthuizen with a few holes remaining. The putt wasn’t a gimme but was very makeable – of a similar distance to the one at 2011 BMW Wentworth tournament with Luke Donald which didn’t drop. There were 5 Europeans in the top 10 – Ian Poulter finished 7th and Justin Rose and Padraig Harrington tied 8th.

The 2012 Masters, Augusta National Course, Georgia, April 5-8 52 year old Freddy Couples, winner in 1992, was an early leader. There was also a strong European contingent up there. Ian Poulter played an exquisite chip shot from a bush on hole 13 which went over bunkers and rolled onto the green, finishing 4 feet from the hole. An unlikely birdie was made from a chip that Ballesteros would have been proud of. A glorious Francesco Molinari iron to within 2 feet on hole 12 was another highlight.

The BMW PGA Championships, Wentworth (May 24-27)

A pair of goblets was on offer for each eagle made during the tournament. There was an albatross at the 2nd hole in the final round (the 4th in the tournament’s history) which took Louis Oosthuizen into the lead and there were also 2 holes in one in the final round both at the 16th hole by Bo Van Pelt and a 7 iron by Adam Scott. ‘The hope’s they do disappear as quickly as they arrive,’

Also in April, Guan Tian Lang, at 13 years and 173 days, became the youngest ever competitor on the European Tour when he participated in the Volvo China Open. ‘I can’t tell you how excited I am to be playing in my national Open,’ he said. His drives measure about 230 yards apparently and although he shot rounds of 77 and 79 (sub 80 at 13?), he missed the cut.

200-1 outsiders James Morrison and David Drysdale led the tournament at the half way stage. Jose Maria Olazabal was also showing some nice touches with the short game as was Luke Donald, last year’s winner. Rory Mcllroy missed the cut after being one of the pre tournament favourites as did Wentworth professional Ross Fisher. Even Lee Westwood had to up and down from a bunker in 2 at the last to make the cut. Luke Donald won at a canter with a 15 under par total by 4 shots from Justin Rose and Paul Lawrie. A sparkling final round of 66 by Lawrie ensured a tie of second place after Rose side cupped a 4 footer at the 18th. Marcel Siem won the BMW car with a hole in one. This may possibly be the final time the tournament is held at Wentworth. ‘We should have won a Ryder Cup here many years ago and it is largely my fault,’ was an interesting Peter Alliss quip.

ASTROLOGY4EVERYONE I suspect there are lots of readers out there who are fascinated by astrology and many of you may regularly turn to the sun-sign page of a paper or magazine. Sometimes the picture fits, other times not and they are seen as just good fun but sun signs are only a small part of the story! So what is it about astrology that has held an attraction for thousands of years? If it’s all rubbish why hasn’t it gone away and if it isn’t why is it not truly accepted by everyone? There are no easy answers to either of these questions but it is true to say that astrology is much more than a ‘hit or miss’ affair and it isn’t a complicated process of science either! It’s been said that Astrology is as important to us for learning how to handle ourselves and our future as math is to sorting out our bills… an obvious truth considering Astrology was at one time taught in Universities! Maybe the greatest accolade that can be given to Astrology is that it can teach us in simple terms, the art of getting to know who we are and what we need out of the world we live in! In this edition of Key to Mijas Costa I’m posting an article about Venus and Mars…often referred to as the ‘love birds’ of the zodiac… do you recognise their’ symbols?

Looking first at Venus, how does the energy of this planet play out in our lives? Known as the’ Goddess of Love’ Venus represents the way we see love and what we look for in love… in Venus we find a need to be appreciated and to appreciate. As a general guideline the placement of Venus in a woman’s natal chart represents the type of man she is likely to be attracted to and vice versa for a man. Still, being attracted romantically to someone doesn’t necessarily mean living together happily ever after, but that’s where it gets interesting. Life is about learning and there is no other or better way we can learn about life than through our relationships, romantic or otherwise. Venus rules the signs of Libra and Taurus and represents two important areas of our life i.e. love and money. Venus also rules the arts, beauty, entertainment, leisure, sensuality and comfort… however negative traits like self-indulgence, self-centredness and superficial behaviour could lead one down a slippery slope if not careful. Ultimately the aim of Venus is to find a balance, but when emotions are involved this can become quite a challenge. In mythology Mars is the God of War and in astrology rules the

sign of Aries, the pioneer, adventurer and biggest go getter of the Zodiac. Mars is the planet of energy, action and sexual desire and rules our animal instinct for aggression, anger and survival. Negative traits include being impulsive, stubborn and destructive which unless harnessed can become self-destructive. Whereas Venus represents romantic attraction Mars is associated with basic body attraction, so already we can see how these two planets might relate and interact with each other... Venus is attracted to Mars’ sexual energy and Mars is most definitely attracted to the beguiling Venus! So here we have opposites attracting each other but is it a match made in Heaven? We’d like to think so but in our earthly reality, relationships are far more complex. The fact is while we’re busy sorting out those Mars and Venus energies between ourselves and a romantic partner, we forget these energies are also present within each of us, which begs the question what kind of relationship do we have with ourselves? Do we drive ourselves over the edge, push ourselves to breaking point? How compassionate and loving are we to ourselves? For how we are within will always be reflected in the way we react or respond in our relationships to others and finding a balance is key to attracting harmonious partnerships. Venus and Mars in the natal birth chart can provide clues and often answers as to why we behave the way we do in our relationships. Without doubt these are the most complex of human challenges but if we become better acquainted with our innermost selves and understand what makes us tick we will have a better chance of understanding our close-up and personal relationships as well as those with our family, friends and work colleagues. Whether or not you are already a believer in Astrology traits, once you study your own sign and the signs of those closest to you, odds are you will come away thinking there is definitely something to it! As a tool Astrology is well equipped to help us on our evolutionary journey and with just a little understanding of the planets and signs in your birth chart you will be able to recognise in a short space of time certain personality traits and characteristics as they play out in your daily life. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about Venus and Mars - look out for more articles about the planets and signs in future issues of Key to Mijas Costa Magazine. KEY FEATURE Common Questions

By Claire Handscombe

Welcome to the final part of Conquering Babel. Here are some of the frequently asked questions and answers. WHAT IS THE HARDEST LANGUAGE TO LEARN? That is a subjective question – as a general rule, we find languages that are closest to our own to be easiest to learn. (Which may be one reason why Brits find it harder than other nationalities to learn a language – English is a mushy mess with many different sources, with no cousin as close as, for example, Swedish is to Norwegian.) Some people like the logic of a language like German – you learn the rules, which are complex but applied with comforting predictability – while others have more of an affinity for a romance language like Portuguese. (“Romance” in this context, by the way, simply means derived from Latin – as in, from Rome.) The idea of different scripts - Greek, or Russian, for example - may daunt you, but although I never got past the second chapter of Colloquial Russian I’m told that after a while that becomes second nature. It was said years ago that Japanese was a language invented by the devil to confound missionaries. Leaving aside the theological implications, it gives you an idea of the challenge you are setting yourself if you decide to learn that one. WHAT IS THE EASIEST LANGUAGE TO LEARN? For all the same reasons, this is subjective. It’s been said that Italian is the easiest – I’m not sure who decided that, but it may well be possible. It’s a close cousin of Spanish, which is not too difficult – and the great thing is that once you speak one Latin-based language, it’s not too hard to figure out the others. HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE ME TO LEARN? Something about a piece of a string springs to mind. For a start, it depends what you mean by “learn”: do you want to be fluent or to be able to hold a basic conversation or to read certain work documents or to order in Italian at the restaurant? It also depends how much work you put in. Two lessons a week and five hours of homework will get you there far quicker than an occasional five minutes of listening to the radio. If you’ve done some – any – of the language before, it will help too, even if you think you can’t remember

26

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

anything. My theory is that for every time you learn something, you’re increasing your chances of remembering it the next time. And, of course, there’s no use pretending: some people have more natural affinity for languages than others do. I do believe than 99.9% of people can make progress if they apply themselves, though. But for some it will take more time and effort than others. Or, for some, it is hard going to start, then they suddenly make progress in leaps and bounds. There simply is no predicting it. HOW DO I KNOW WHEN I’VE FINISHED? I’m not sure how to put this, but you haven’t finished. And you never will. You are learning all the time, even in your own language. I fairly regularly come across words I don’t know in English when I am reading. And to make it more complicated, language is always changing and evolving, so even if you were to perfectly master the thousands of words and idioms in a given language today, there will be a new word or a new usage for a word tomorrow. Think about it: “unlike” did not exist before Facebook. That said, I know I am fluent in Spanish, and I suppose that’s because I know I can conduct a conversation on almost any topic with a native speaker at a natural speed. I can watch television or read a magazine and understand 90% of what is happening. (Even in our own language, we don’t understand 100% of everything, but we don’t have the “panic” reflex that a new word or phrase triggers in a foreign language – we simply pick up the gist as you go on. But my Spanish is not as fluent as it once was, for example the year that I lived near Valencia. Speaking a language is not like riding a bike – you do forget. Yes, things come back, and can do so quickly, but rust does set in. If you play an instrument, you’ll know that after a summer where you haven’t touched your oboe, it takes a little while to get back to the stage you were at and build muscle memory up again. Languages are similar to that. This “never finished” aspect is also why it’s important to have SMART goals – that way, you will be able to say that you achieved a specific aim, and that is helpful for motivation. KEY PETS Faeces Eating

By David the Dogman

We are pleased to welcome back David the Dogman into the magazine to write about dog issues.

important to dogs, which is why the manufacturers of dog food make sure their products smell good to a dog.

“Coprophagia”, to give the proper name, is a natural form of behaviour which most dogs learn from puppyhood when their mother will clean up after them. It happens more in puppies which come from rescue kennels and pet shops. It can also be started by poor house-training where owners do not clean up after the pup. Boredom is another cause. Dogs that spend long periods alone in the garden or in kennels can develop this habit. In kennels, dogs will copy other dogs doing it. Don’t rub a dog’s nose in its excrement. This only teaches dogs to eat the evidence to avoid punishment. Don’t shout or chase the dog away. It will only learn to eat faster. Do remove the faeces, especially if you live in a warm climate, for they encourage mosquitoes. You can also treat faeces with Tabasco or peppers. The dog will not find that taste very rewarding. It could be the dog is just hungry. Split the daily food ration into several portions and feed the dog three or four times a day with a higher fibre content. Alternatively, the dog could have a health problem. There is a condition called exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, where a lack of enzymes in the pancreas will result in dogs being ravenously hungry. Dogs suffering from this will eat anything. Although the eating of faeces is absolutely repellent to humans, the smell and texture is attractive to dogs. They have a different palate to our own. If all else fails, only allow the dog off lead with a muzzle. Taste is not such an important sense to dogs, despite claims to the contrary made by the manufacturers of pet foods. Dogs have around only 3,000 taste buds compared to the 10,000 of a human, so their taste factor is much lower than ours. Smell is far more

Smell A dog has around 200 million sensitive cells in its nose compared to a human’s five million, so its sense of smell is around 40 times better than ours. A dog’s sense of smell is made even stronger by an organ in the roof of the mouth that humans do not possess. This enables it to ‘taste’ a smell, turning a weak smell into a stronger one. This sensitivity to smell, especially butyric acid emitted in sweat, enables a dog to pick out the ball belonging to its owner from several balls thrown by different people. It also enables Bloodhounds to track an escaping convict up to 100 miles. Trained dogs can also detect the odours of heroin, marijuana and cocaine hidden in suitcases even if surrounded by something strong smelling such as perfume. Other dogs can be trained to detect the acid in nitroglycerine and the sulphur in gunpowder for work with explosives. Dogs are even used to sniffing out truffles in the ground. Some believe their sense of smell makes them suitable for infra-red detection, which helps them find humans in snowdrifts. A dog, however, is not so sensitive to some smells that humans regard as important, such as the smell of cooking or flowers. A dog doesn’t water at the mouth when a roast joint sizzles in the oven, nor does it get much pleasure from the smell of a rose. Thinking that a dog does appreciates these things is another sign of anthropomorphism but that is another subject. You can listen to David the Dogman and ask him questions on his show on Talk Radio Europe on Saturday mornings at 10.00 a.m. Frequencies - Costa del Sol East (Calahonda to Nerja) 88.9fm, Costa del Sol West (Calahonda to Algeciras) 91.9fm.

KEY PETS Alsatians and Rottweilers I always remember, when I was very young, there was a period where Alsatians were in the news everyday, for attacks on elderly people and children. The breed was given such a bad name that it was considered to have the breed banned in UK. The main reasons for this problem were greedy people who had never owned a dog, let alone understand the first thing about breeding such animals, started breeding thinking they could make themselves a fortune, buying a female normally without any pedigree, then putting the female together with a male from the same ilk. Hey presto, this was a great way of collecting money quickly. WRONG! Breeding any kind of animal is not easy work, there are many things to learn about, what is required to prepare the bitch to ensure she is in good condition for the birth, to know how to help the bitch if she gets into trouble during birthing, what to feed her while pregnant. Then in the early days of feeding the puppies, how and when to worm firstly the mother, then the mother and pups, when to introduce the puppies to solid food and how to socialise the puppies. Preparation and location of a safe, warm bedding area, with guard rails to ensure the mother does not lay on top of the pups. These are a few of the elementary details required prior to the birth.

34

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

By Graham Stark, Macfin Rottweilers The same mentality was evident in recent times with the Rottweiler. There is one fundamental difference between an Alsatian and a Rottweiler. The Alsatian weighs approx 35 kgs whereas a Rottweiler male fully grown will weigh between 50-60 kgs. I have been involved with dogs most of my life, solely with Rottweilers for over 20 years I will never replace our Rottweilers with any other breed for several reasons. When properly trained, they are a fantastic animal - a secure guardian to the end and will protect you and your family property without doubt. They have an excellent relationship with children but while children are around we always make sure we stay in close range - not that we are afraid that the Rottweilers would cause a problem, but you never know what kids get up to. Recently we have had a few puppies, sad to say the same type of buyers have appeared, not interested in quality only to have a female puppy as cheap as possible, not interested that a licence, microchip and rabies injection are legal requirements. Such people are not interested in the puppy, have no idea nor do they care how much time and effort has been put into such a puppy and will never be the owner of a Macfin puppy.

KEY FEATURE Wolf Park, Antequera Being animal lovers with a breed of dogs as close to the wolf as you can get, we have always wanted to visit the wolf park in Antequera and finally decided to go to hear the wolves howl on the night of that wonderful full moon in May. We opted for the guided tour with dinner but other options are available. I have extracted information from the Wolf Park website as I believe this explains it best. If you are nature lovers, have kids or want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the coast, this is an amazing place to visit all year round. “The Lobo Park located in the heart of Andalusia, Spain was founded by Daniel Weigend and Alexandra Stieber (both originate from Germany) as a private initiative in 2002 (open to the public since November 2004) with the ambition to establish a wolf park that is unique in the world in its configuration. It is the intention of the owners that all wolves as well as all the other animals live in an environment that was built to protect as much of the existing flora and fauna as well as to ensure that their living circumstances are as related to real nature as possible. The ‘mission’ was to give these fascinating animals the respect that they deserve. It is of great importance that they have huge enclosures to live a life that is almost equivalent to a ‘natural’ environment - to live their genuine pack life without interference of human intrusion or domestication. App. 100.000m² has been reserved for huge enclosures for the wolves to provide as much space as possible to roam and play. Only through this effort can one truly observe how wolves live. Respect is being given and trust is its return! The way our wolves are socialized allows visitors to see

36

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

and perceive the wolves as they are in the wild. To socialize the wolves the two, Daniel and Alexandra hand rear their pups. This is a very important phase in the very young life of these extraordinary animals. In this very important phase many mistakes can and are being done when raising wolf pups, therefore no interns or even employees of the park have contact to them. The “art” is to take the natural fear of humans away from the pups but without taking an influence on their wolfish behaviour. A typical phrase from Daniel is: “I’m not an animal tamer and don’t want circus animals. We want to show real wolves with real wolfish behaviour. How can I ever study their social behaviour if I already de-socialise them as pups? When I visit my animals, they greet me as a friend – not as their boss. If my wolves would ever behave submissively towards me then I have done unforgivable mistakes. For the wolves I’m something like an extraterrestrial friend. I’m a part time member of the pack, but not a member of their hierarchy.” Guided tours (Spanish and English) will show visitors the different wolves and let you learn more about their behaviour and how wolves communicate, play, hunt and eat. The path features observation platforms, where visitors can enjoy a clear view and come into close contact with the animals. This beautiful park offers families fun and excitement, stimulating education programs, as well as a peaceful place to enjoy nature. There is something new to discover on every visit!” For further information go to www.lobopark.com or telephone 952 031 107.

KEY FEATURE Calahonda Dog Show and Summer Fete Sunday June 24th

As we all tighten our belts during these difficult financial times it is impossible to ignore all the stories and appeals for help we are receiving daily from the many rescue centres we have here in southern Spain. The number of abandoned dogs has increased dramatically as a result of unemployment and other economic effects of the current financial crisis. Some animals are simply just tied to the gates of the nearest shelter as their owners pack up and leave the country, seemingly uncaring that they have left a once treasured family member behind! Many of these dogs are taken in by kind hearted local residents and cared for until a place can be found for them in one of the local rescue centres, which at this point in time are all full to capacity and working round the clock to try and find, if not permanent homes, then at least foster homes, especially for puppies and older dogs. (This is how we got our 3rd dog Rodnie – we “fostered” him 2 years ago- I think my wife may have “cottoned on” by now!) Many of the kind hearted people who foster these dogs usually have at least 1 dog of their own and sometimes find it quite difficult to absorb the added cost of purchasing extra dog food. It was whilst discussing this one night over a few “sherbets” with two friends and students of Calahonda Pet Dog School, Karoline and Richard Barrett, that we decided to try and help with this problem and decided to organise a Charity Dog Show. As a result of the positive feedback and terrific response for help we have received during the past few weeks this has evolved into a Dog Show, combined with a Summer Fete. –This will be held in Parque España, Avda España, Calahonda on Sunday June 24th, sponsored by Calahonda Pet Dog School and Splitz Hair Salon, Calypso, and all the money raised from the stall holders and dog competitions will be used to purchase dog food and will be presented to our chosen Rescue centre F.A.M.A to help them towards the cost of feeding the dogs that are currently fostered out and the many they have at their centre. The day starts with registration for the dog competitions at 10 am with the first event commencing at 11am, terminating in the presentation of “Best in Show” at 5pm. There will be a demonstration by the Guardia Civil sniffer dogs and by another local centre with their guard dogs. Some of the fun events are a Doggy fancy dress and Egg and Spoon race as well as the jumping, agility and others.

By Gary Joynson, Calahonda Pet Dog School

Throughout the day there will be refreshments available and a huge variety of gift stalls providing everything from dog food to bath salts and jewellery. We also have plenty to keep the children occupied in the form of a bouncy castle, coconut shy, sweets and candy floss as well as pony rides in the surrounding countryside. If you do not have a dog but still fancy a good day out, then bring us a photograph of your cat and enter it into our Cutest Cat Competition. KEY FEATURE Saint Cars What can we say? Best service we have ever used. We had family members come out for a few and were unable to pick them up at the airport or lend them a car due to work commitments so we called John at Saint Cars. Well, he was a saint. He met our people at the airport, the car was full of fuel, absolutely spotless inside and out and he then returned them to the airport at the end of their visit

and they were very, very happy. So if your car is off the road for a couple of days, you have people coming out that need a car or you need a longer rental for any reason, why not give Saint Cars a call. Excellent service, completely honest and reliable and no hidden extras. The price he quotes is the price you pay. Automatics are also available. We recommend this service.

KEY FEATURE Fuengirola Alzheimer Family Association Fuengirola Alzheimer Family Association presented an informative session about dementia at an Age Care Association sponsored event held at the Hotel Tamisa Golf. President Francisca Labron of Alzheimer Family Association (AFA), Fuengirola branch, introduced the Spanish association. AFA’s principle objective is: Improving the quality of life for Alzheimer patients and family. Sra. Labron described the various phases of the disease. She explained that not all persons follow the same process; that there are mild, moderate and severe phases, and that at times it may appear that the sufferer is getting better, although it is not possible. She spoke about how there are often stagnant periods, and the development progresses at a different pace for each individual. Psychologist Raquel Clavijo explained some of the objectives of the therapy employed. For example, Memory Workshops which aim to stimulate mental capacity. They help the patient maintain relationships with family and friends and feel secure and keep the maximum of independence. They stimulate identity and self esteem and minimize stress. Interaction with the patient is done through cognitive stimulation with the Gradior programme. Sufferers are taken out to perform daily types of activities such as a cafe visit, a trip to the market, florist, etc. Birthdays, holidays and festivals are celebrated. Social Worker Angel Perez introduced the services AFA provides. Fuengirola has the facilities of a Day Centre with social attention, memory workshops, home help service, family education, emotional support, speech and physiotherapy, legal guidance, transportation and meals. Sr. Perez explained how until recently government funds and national support have allowed AFA FUENGIROLA-MIJAS COSTA, to begin constructing it’s own complete day

(and overnight) centre in Los Pacos, Fuengirola. The land was donated, the structure is built, but the funds have stopped due to our current economic crisis. The finishing touches of the interior are yet to be completed and the work schedule is determined by independent donations at this point. Age Care plans to organise a fund raiser this year to assist AFA with this. When the centre is complete, it will include a therapeutic indoor swimming pool, an activities salon, gymnasium, psycho-stimulation workshop wings, physical therapy rooms, various meeting/teaching rooms, family therapy salon, 2 dining rooms, kitchen, hair dresser, personal grooming services and overnight sleeping accommodations for sufferer and family when needed. AFA emphasised the importance of treating and educating the entire family of the patient with this disease. Working with a small paid staff of professionals, AFA relies on volunteers from the top down to provide help for the sufferer and their carers. Until now, there has not been a strong need for AFA to provide services in English. AFA Fuengirola-Mijas Costa has only one English speaking patient, who at the moment uses the translation assistance of a SenVol volunteer. Age Care Association, who sponsored the lecture, is very interested in coordinating the increasing needs of the English speaking community on the coast for such services with AFA, SenVol and its own volunteers. If you or anyone you know is interested in participating in such a program with AFA as either a sufferer, carer or volunteer, please contact ACA helplines: 691-761-088/655-903-182; www.agecarecosta.org If you are interested in contacting AFA Fuengirola directly, or regarding their volunteer program “Contamos Contigo” (We are counting on you), please telephone: 952-464-426. alzheimer@afafuengirolamijascosta.org

KEY FINANCE The Outcome in Greece affects us all With the election of President Hollande, France has joined Spain, the Netherlands, Italy and others in the movement to water down the German Chancellor’s more extreme (as they see it) demands for austerity at any price. They argue that cost-cutting alone is no way to generate the positive economic growth essential to balancing the books in the long run. As Greece, Spain and Italy have discovered to their cost - if not to their surprise - harsh reductions in government spending and wholesale redundancies in the public sector are a sure-fire way to shrink the economy. Greek voters are at the cutting edge of this anti-austerity push. At the recent general election they leaned away from the traditional custodians of political power to such a degree that it was impossible to form a coalition government. Alexis Tripras’s Syriza party is the current favourite to win most parliamentary seats in a re-run of the election on 17 June. Mr Tsipras’s platform is the renunciation of austerity, or at least the renegotiation of what he considers to be the “barbaric” terms attached to the bailout. The success of Syriza at the first election shook investors. It looked as though victory for Mr Tsipras might lead directly to a spat between him and Brussels that would mean suspension of the bailout payments to Greece. That would mean insolvency for the country and its exit from the single currency - perhaps also its separation from the European Union. Two weeks on, the enormity of the euro breakup threat was beginning to fade. Greece would be able to make no significant political decision until after the 17 June vote. By then, the electorate might have learned the error of their anti-European ways and fallen into line

behind more conventional politicians. Also, at the G8 summit in mid-May the non-Euroland heads of government (Russia, America, Canada, Japan and Britain) as well as the anti-austerity axis (Italy and Spain) allegedly went out of the way to persuade Chancellor Merkel that economic growth was more important than balanced budgets. They obviously had a degree of success: the post-summit communiqué began; “Our imperative is to promote growth and jobs.” Frau Merkel was one of the signatories. But it is not hard to sympathise with the chancellor’s reservations about the risk of throwing more of her taxpayers’ good money after bad. With a general election to fight next year she cannot hand Germany’s credit card to Athens other than with a heavy heart. Greece does after all have form on institutional profligacy. So it still looks tricky for the Greece and the single currency. The EU, the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank could come storming in from the flank to deliver a killer blow to the euro’s greatest threat; lack of confidence. They will have to look sharp about it though. At best, there are four weeks until Greece potentially elects an ex-communist anti-austerity radical who could scupper the bailout arrangements and take his country out of the euro and out of the EU. At worst, lack of action could encourage self-preserving Greeks to shift more of their money out of the country. If the trickle turns to a flood there is no guarantee that the ECB would step in to provide the necessary funding to Greek banks; it is no more keen to lose its money than the rest of us. KEY LAW Can The Community Statutes Be Against The Horizontal Property Law?

By Jose Luis Navarro, Intercala’s solicitor and Property Administrator

The Horizontal Property Law (LPH) has been modified several times. One of the main modifications was approved by the law 8/1999, 6th April. This Law 8/1999, provided in its Final Provision that:

quence of a change in the LPH. In my opinion, as it is stated in clause nÂş 5 of the Horizontal Property Law, the only valid purpose of the statutes would be to regulate the use of the private and communal properties. It would be wrong to use the statutes in a different way.

1. Whatever general provision against that has been stated on the present Act are abolished. Contained clauses on the statutes of the communities of proprietors which are against or incompatible with this Act will be considered null and void. 2. The statutes of the communities of proprietors will adjust themselves, in one-year term, to what has been disposed on the present Act. Needless to say that many communities had their own statutes approved before 1999, and after that just a few of them were adjusted to the new law, so nowadays, all the articles that could be considered against the LPH can not be applied. The horizontal property law is compulsory, so you can not approve any agreement or statutory clause against its provisions. We can face two main groups of statutory clauses: a) The ones with the same provision that are approved in the LPH, so these clauses would be legal but useless, or, b) The ones which regulate the community against the obligatory content of the LPH, which would be null and void. I know that many British nationals think that all communities should have their own statutes, but according to the LPH this would be useless. Even more, the clauses that are now legal, tomorrow might be illegal as a conse-

KEY FINANCE Shopping Around For The Best Insurance Deal? In the current financial climate many people are shopping around for the best deals on their insurance premiums. However, if you do shop around and find a cheap quote have you considered all the other aspects? It is little comfort in knowing that you paid the cheapest premium you could find if you did not also take into consideration other important factors. For instance, in the event of a claim, you need to be confident that the company you are insured with is reliable and will deal quickly and efficiently with your claim. You also need to be absolutely certain that the policy you ultimately take out is the right product for you personally. After all, if you buy a car for instance, you do not usually take into account just the price you are going to pay. You also look at such things as fuel consumption, comfort, reliability and after sales service. What about the service you receive after taking out an insurance policy? Would you prefer someone taking a personal interest in your problems? Most policies can be tailor made to take into account your own personal requirements. Of-

ten cheap premiums mean a low level of service and you could well be spending more time organizing the progress of your own claim and outlaying more money by having to make phone calls which can often be frustrating if there is a language barrier. You may initially find a cheap deal by shopping around but you may also have taken on board an expense you did not anticipate. Some insurance companies use Helpline telephone numbers which are costly and in the event of say a motor accident or breakdown, if you consider how long you may be on a mobile phone explaining perhaps where you have broken down, then the costs could be prohibitive. Don’t take the cheapest renewal option, take the most suitable option for your needs. Rightway Insurance is happy to discuss your requirements and find you the most suitable policy for your needs. In the event of a claim you can be confident that there is someone taking a personal interest. Make sure you consult us and we will make sure you are insured the Right Way.

KEY LAW The Programme “Rich in an Instant” Fined By Data Protection

By Victoria Anzola, Iberdata 21

The producer of the competition has to pay 200 thousand Euros for sending 36 million SMS’s. The Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) has decided to fine the production company of the channel Antena 3 programme, Rich in an Instant. This organisation has imposed a fine of 200 thousand Euros on the company Ocio Factory Time for having sent 36 million text messages SMS’s to mobile phones throughout Spain. The majority of the messages were sent without the consent of the receiver of the message. The objective of these messages was to promote the competition “Rich in an Instant” which is shown by Antena 3. The message in question encouraged the user to respond to the message in order to participate in the competition in which they could win a “juicy prize”. During the months of January and February 2011, the AEPD received more than 300 complaints in respect of this “Spam” campaign, unprecedented for a programme in our country. The company responsible for the programme that Antena 3 showed last year tried to avoid blame saying that the text message allowed the users to reject the receipt of any more publicity via their mobile phone. Although this is so, Zed Worlwide, the producers of Rich in an Instant, admitted that a negligible amount of messages were sent without this advice. The AEPD would not consider the statements presented by Zed and so this case turned into one of the biggest fines received by a company in Spain for this type of practice. Below is a continuation from the last issue regarding occupational health and safety. Take appropriate breaks throughout the day Multiple short duration breaks provide the body with more rest than a single long duration break. These breaks, often called “Micro-Breaks”, last anywhere from 10 to 60 seconds and should be taken throughout the day. During these micro-breaks, look away from the computer screen and focus on objects in the distance, remove your hands from the keyboard and/or gently stretch muscles. An example of an “active micro break” is taking 5 -15 seconds every 5 minutes to rest the eyes and upper body. Try This... Try to alternate your computer work with other tasks. For example, rather than typing continuously for an hour, stop and deliver a fax or do some filing. When you break up computer work with other office tasks, your arms, neck and back muscles can rest. You may need to schedule breaks into your day until you are used to taking breaks away from the computer.

Your chair is the most important part of your office workstation. The chair has to fit you and suit the tasks that you do. One style of chair may not suit every worker. For example, the “average” chair is designed in some instances to fit the average male and may not suit other users. When looking for a chair it is important that the users have the option to try several different designs prior to finalizing any purchase. A trial period should be long enough to allow for an opportunity to try the chair (i.e. several weeks) and to provide comments or concerns with the chair. WHAT MAKES A CHAIR ERGONOMIC? The following features are part of a good office chair. A chair is only “ergonomic” if you can adjust it to fit you. Get to know your chair by experimenting with the controls, so you can make adjustments quickly and confidently. General Chair Features - 5-caster swivel base - Armrests - Height adjustable seat pan - Tilt adjustable back rest - Ability to make adjustments easily while sitting in the chair - Firm padding covered with non-slip, breathable fabric Seat pan - Rounded front edge - Wide and deep (long) enough to fit you comfortably - Adjustable in angle Backrest - Padding for the low back area that is curved to fit the shape of your back - Height adjustable (separate from seat pan) - Adjustable angle with locking mechanism - Wide and high enough to fit your back comfortably Note: When we sit, our back tends to lose some of its natural curvature. An effective lumbar support of a chair is designed to help maintain the natural curvature of the spine when sitting. It is important to provide appropriate support for the spine so that there is no discomfort or pain. If you are feeling pain while sitting, the lumbar support of your chair may not be placed correctly. KEY FINANCE QROPS Whilst You Can! Managing Director Premier Pension Solutions SL Stephen Ward was a member of the UK Government’s Pensions Industry Working Group advising HMRC on the pensions’ legislation changes which introduced Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes (QROPS) in the 2006 Finance Act. He is also the author of the definitive textbook on pension taxation, “Tolley’s Pensions Taxation 2011-12” The period since 6 April this year has been one of great upheaval. New regulations were introduced in relation to transfers of UK pension rights to overseas pension schemes. Guernsey as a destination, and the Isle of Man, have been closed to new business, possibly forever. It appears that Malta may have replaced Guernsey as the jurisdiction of choice for the majority completing transfers to a QROPS since 6 April. HMRC’S NEW OBJECTIVES There seems to be little doubt that HMRC are of the view that in the future the individual and their pension fund should reside in the same country. We think it is quite likely that this is the way that things will develop, with new legislation likely to be introduced in April 2013. So if you have a UK pension fund that is able to be transferred, then the clock may be ticking for you to take advantage of the current flexible benefits available following a transfer to a QROPS. THE IMPORTANCE OF CHOOSING THE RIGHT JURISDICTION Malta is not the only available jurisdiction. In fact in some circumstances Malta is unsuitable. Care has to be taken from a taxation perspective in relation to the future benefits when they arise, in particular in relation to double taxation treaties. Other jurisdictions can be more attractive. We

By Stephen Ward BA (Econ), ACII, APMI have been evaluating, and now have available to us, a scheme in a jurisdiction in Europe which for many will be reassuring in terms of sheltering from the storm which seems almost inevitably about to engulf the Eurozone. Not only does it provide the usual protection from taxation on the remaining fund after death, but enables benefit to be taken at pension age in the form of a single lump sum, albeit with a small deduction of local tax. This provides the necessary level of benefit flexibility that most people are seeking. Schemes in other jurisdictions also provide for much greater levels of benefit flexibility than were ever available in Guernsey or Isle of Man. Higher Transfer Values Available Now These current unusual economic conditions, that will form the subject of history books in years to come, are having the side-effect of creating unusually high transfer values from many UK pension schemes. The opportunity to take advantage of the situation, and to protect your fund from the economic turmoil that could easily follow the second Greek general election on June 17, is now there to be taken. If you’ve not seriously considered transferring your UK pension fund, no matter its size, to access the many benefits of a QROPS, it is something that must be looked at now. If you would like to hear how a switch to a QROPS would be of benefit to you, contact our Regional Director, Brian Brannan on 610 926 335, or email: bbrannan@prempensions.com www.prempensions.com. The British ex-pat that lives in Bullas, Murcia put in a dominant display to set pole position and then take a win in both of his two races to take the overall victory for the day. It didn’t go all his own way though as he was chased hard in the first race by the Spanish rider, Ivan Romero Garcia, before a small error saw him crash out as he clipped the back of Anthony’s bike as he entered a turn. Ivan was injured in the crash and was unable to restart, or participate in the second of the two races. The second race saw Anthony’s older brother, Mat, take the lead into the first corner and there was a frantic couple of laps racing between the two brothers before Anthony made a pass on the brakes at the end of the straight. Fellini’s, the well-known Italian Restaurant at the Aztec Country Club in Riviera del Sol, has been a favourite haunt for many years and indeed celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. The emphasis is on a friendly, family service with reasonable prices but retaining a high standard of cuisine. Summer opening hours are now from 12.00 to 12.00. On the menu at lunchtime are Tapas, Pizza and Pasta etc. In the evenings Fellini’s retains its extensive Italian menu of family favourites such as pastas, pizzas, meat and seafood dishes cooked to perfection all of which is available as take away as well. Our particular favourites from the extensive menu are Minestrone Soup, Antipasto or Spaghetti Pil Pil for starters, Vegetable Risotto, Veal Milanese or any of the delicious pastas or pizzas for main course to name but a few. I am also rather partial to the Veal Saltimbocca. We are now also hooked on Fellini’s Pizzas which are authentic, thin and crispy and we believe the best in the area. There is also a good selection of home-made desserts and a fine wine list including favourite Italian wines. Fellini’s welcomes family dining with several suitable items on the menu for children. Indian Ocean Henry and the staff at Indian Ocean made us extremely welcome from the offset. Henry has a great sense of humour, is mild mannered and I notice how his customers greet him fondly – a good sign as he has regulars. Firstly I must comment on how reasonable the price is, particularly in relationship to

the quality of the food served. Too many local Indian restaurants are not at all shy in charging an enormous amount for quite a mediocre meal. Indian Ocean is at Playa Marina and is tastefully decorated. Papadoms were very fresh. I was delighted to see Prawn Puri on the menu and this and the Chicken Tikka for starters went down very well. The other half went for the Bhuna which he thoroughly enjoyed. I decided to go for one of the many specials on the menu, Galina Cafreal, a very tasty Goan curry cooked with toasted coconut, green chillies, ginger, tomato and fresh coriander which was superb. Whilst I really enjoy the traditional Indian favourites, it is nice to see such a good selection of different dishes if you would like a change. Indian Ocean also does it hot if you like to add a bit of spice to your life. Indian Ocean does a free home delivery service in the local area, so if you fancy a night in with a curry, you can have something really tasty delivered to your door. This now arrives punctually with a happy delivery man. I would still advise that you make sure your address and directions are clear and that you leave your phone number. We continue to enjoy our meals from Indian Ocean. Delivery is always with a smile. Indian Ocean is Key recommended. We have so enjoyed the Sunday Brunch Buffet but unfortunately this will not be available during July and August - due to the freshness of the food, the heat is not conducive, but I am sure this will be featured again from the autumn. The standard has always been maintained since we were first introduced to Mumtaz twelve years ago. Ash explains his secret which is due to the extra time and expense that is taken to ensure that he only buys the best quality cuts of meat available which is reflected particularly in all the lamb dishes, which are as tender as butter. Also recommended are Tikkas, Kormas, Chicken Tikka Masala and Prawn Dansak. For me, Mumtaz nan breads are the best on the coast. This is a simple restaurant, no frills and reasonable prices. Please mention to Ash that you come on recommendation from the Key to Mijas Costa. Please see main ad.

KEY NEWS 177 people and is part owned by an Employee Benefit Trust. The company manufactures and markets Cambridge 800 in Spain. In the UK Cambridge Weight Plan is sold through more than 2200 accredited independent Cambridge Consultants who provide advice, guidance and support during all phases of weight care from initial weight loss to long-term weight maintenance. Here in Spain we operate the same professional model as the UK, but with a different product, Cambridge 800. However, obesity is now a global health issue and the company operates in markets as diverse as Holland, Vietnam, South Africa and Saudi Arabia. The brand has also just been launched in Australia. CMC’s Managing Director, Eileen Skinner, said: “We are very proud to win The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade especially as this is also Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee year. The growth in our export sales since 2008 has been built around a very successful UK business model that encourages and empowers individuals to be entrepreneurial. In partnership with our distributors around the world we have taken this model and successfully exported it to many international markets. As such we have not only helped more than 25 million people to lose and maintain their weight worldwide, but also empowered many people in both developed and developing countries to realise their dream of owning and running their own businesses. In Vietnam for example many of the Consultants are earning their own income for the first time. This has had a direct impact not only on their families but also on the wider communities in which they live”. - Until January 2010, Cambridge Weight Plan (CWP) was known as the Cambridge Diet. Cambridge 800 is manufactured by Cambridge manufacturing Company Limited {CMC}, is distributed by Cambridge Nutritional Foods SL in Spain and other European countries and is part of the Cambridge group of companies. - Cambridge 800 offers five flexible weight management programmes ranging from 800 kcal – 1500+kcal per day, and a maintenance programme. - Products include a variety of bars, soups, porridges and shakes – all of which are nutritionally balanced and can be used as a total diet replacement of nutrition or as part of a balanced weight management programme. - In the UK, accredited independent Cambridge Consultants provide advice, guidance and support during all phases of weight care from initial weight loss to long-term weight maintenance. In Spain we apply the same good practise and ethics as our UK parent company. - Cambridge Weight Plan stems from the early 1960s when Dr Alan Howard, then a research scientist at the University of Cambridge, developed an interest in overweight and obesity.

- He began to investigate methods of weight reduction, using himself as one of the guinea pigs. Together with Dr Ian McLean-Baird of the West Middlesex Hospital, in 1968 he organized a National Symposium on Obesity, the first ever held in the UK. - They then developed what they regarded as the’ perfect diet’, which provided full nutrition and eliminated the sense of hunger. - Long-term safety was assessed and confirmed by further independent research in the UK, the USA and across Europe. - Ongoing research into the effectiveness of Cambridge programmes within weight management continues. The latest results on improved nutritional status and maintained bone health were published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition in December 2011. - Cambridge Weight Plan was launched (under the name the Cambridge Diet) in the UK in 1984. - Cambridge 800 is available through accredited Cambridge 800 Consultants throughout Spain. (formerly Miraflores Sports Massage and Beauty Centre). Mike is now working either from his clinic in Riviera or mobile. Personally I am really enjoying the experience of having him visit me at home which means that after a relaxing massage, I can just chill out at home instead of having to get dressed, get in the car and drive home. Surely this is the best benefit you can get from a massage? For further information see page 16.

NEW BODY

As many of you know, I have chronic back problems. I am now able to start my treatments with the New Body Tei System on a regular basis. We have taken the first lot of photos of the “before” and by the time we put the August issue of the magazine together, we should see an amazing difference on my “Bingo Wings” and upper thighs as these are the areas I have decided to focus on in the beginning. Pads were wrapped around various parts of my body and then first of all the lymph drainage programme was set for a period of 15 minutes. For the rest of the treatment I enjoyed the muscle stimulation with infrared heat treatment which really relaxed me, in fact so much so that I actually dropped off!! At the same time the machine worked its magic effortlessly trimming my thighs and upper arms while I slept peacefully. So if you need pain relief or can’t get on in the gym, this is a very pleasant alternative. More on this in the next issue. Please see main ad.

PASSION STUDIO

has now moved to the Tamisa Golf Hotel. Passion Studio offers a combination of different classes to enable you to star t to train, recover from operations etc. I have been in terrible pain for quite some time with my back etc. I don’t par ticularly like walking and as my gait is also not terribly conducive to walking either, I find it sometimes causes more problems that it solves. If you are of a cer tain age, although of course Passion Studio caters for all age groups, you will not be intimidated by the classes at Passion Studio. Caterina is a very patient and exceptional teacher and just wants to help people to improve their fitness and most of all have fun. I am loving the Water Gym and I have also star ted as a beginner in the Pilates classes. The beginners’ classes are quite small so you can join at any time and it does not matter how unfit you are, you will be able to do most of the movements and you will not feel out of place. It is amazing at how quickly you can pick up Pilates, how relaxing it is and how much better you feel afterwards. For fur ther information on other classes available etc., please see age 13.
