Well, there have been fires and floods since the last issue, then back to incredible temperatures for October. As I sit and write this, the fog has descended once again. What strange days. Autumn is well and truly here now and it is such a lovely time of year in Mijas Costa. As always, there is plenty for you to get your teeth into in this issue. We are pleased to welcome clients back into the magazine and in this case Anni’s Vital Shop in Elviria is no exception. Health is always a big issue for all of us and you will find some interesting information on page 19. Although the main thrust of summer is now behind us, you will find there are still plenty of events going on and these can be found on page 35. Also see Key to Mijas Costa Facebook page for any updates. There have been some very distressing reports regarding the mistreatment of animals in the press in recent months. With that in mind,

We will continue to update this in future issues with more landmarks etc. and would welcome readers’ suggestions too! The maps can be found from pages 79 to 83. Last but by no means least, my favourite part of the magazine, the restaurant guide which beings on page 54. See what’s going on for Halloween and the Festive Season. KEY BEAUTY Botox or Filler? We are constantly being asked what is the difference between BOTOX and FILLER, so we are going to answer the most frequently asked questions. Firstly I will explain the difference between the two. BOTOX Botox freezes the muscle so that it doesn’t move. It is almost always used around the eyes, in between the eyes and the head. FILLERS As it says, we fill in your lines and the muscles move normally. FILLERS are almost always used from the middle of your nose downwards, around the mouth, cheek and lips. DOES IT HURT? Not at all. The new types of fillers now have built in anesthetic, so you feel almost nothing. With Botox we use a cream anesthetic first if you feel you need it as Botox is not painful, but some people just don’t like needles. HOW OFTEN DOES IT NEED TO BE DONE? Fillers need to be redone after one year. Some will last as long as 2 years depending on which one we use. Botox needs to be done every 3-4 months. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE? Your consultation will take about half an hour and the treatments take half to one hour. ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FILLERS AND BOTOX? Yes, there are a few different manufacturers. The most commonly used is Restalyn or Juvederm and these come in different strengths. Some are for finer lines and some for much deeper ones. As for Botox, there are a lot of manufacturers, but the strength does not differ so much. ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS? If you are having fillers, then yes, there will be some swelling for 24 hours and very occasionally it can bruise, so don’t arrange to go out for the night the day you have it done! Filler can also itch slightly for a couple of hours. As for Botox, there are no after effects other than small marks like mosquito bites that will vanish in an hour or so. Botox slowly takes over 6 to 8 days whereas filler

6

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

takes immediately. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Fillers start at 250 Euros for a vial and go up to 375 Euros. It depends which you have. Botox is much cheaper but it doesn’t last as long as filler. The more areas you have, the cheaper it is. One area is 120 to 130 Euros, 2 areas in 200 Euros, 3 areas is 279 Euros. If you need a consultation, please call Hair Magic. All our consultations are free whether it is for hair or beauty.

KEY HEALTH Prevention Can Save Your Life The breasts are the symbol of a woman’s femininity, a crucial part of her sexuality and a bond between mother and child during maternity. But breasts are also the female organs that generate the highest incidence of cancer among women. Hence our interest in making it widely known that early detection is the only way to achieve the highest number of cures using the least aggressive treatments. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. The lifetime risk of developing breast cancer is one in nine and in the UK, 41,000 new cases are diagnosed each year (1% of cases occurring in men). The risk of breast cancer is increased in some patients if there is a family history (particularly on the maternal side). The risk of breast cancer increases with age and 80% of breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50. Current data indicate that survival rates from breast cancer are improving. The key factors for this improvement are increased breast awareness and early detection and presentation of breast cancer. The mammogram is undoubtedly the most effective method of cancer screening (the method used for early detection of the disease). It can detect 35% to 45% of tumors smaller than 1 cm, when we cannot yet feel them. However, this test is less

By David Donaldson, Clinica Medicare

sensitive on women younger than 40 due to the higher density of the breast tissue at a younger age. Therefore, it is important that women under 40 assess their family-related risks. For example, whether they have any direct relatives with breast cancer in the family or whether they have ever had a breast disease, to ascertain which check-ups are needed. In these cases, a complementary ultrasound can diagnose small hidden abnormalities that the mammogram is unable to detect. And we must not forget the importance of breast self-examination. All women should be familiar with their own breasts and the changes that occur during the monthly cycle, so they can make an appointment with a specialist if they detect anything unusual. Finally, a clinical breast examination should be part of an annual gynaecological check-up, together with the smear test. Non-aggressive and cost-effective methods are available today for the early diagnosis of breast diseases. Don’t forget that prevention starts with you. KEY HEALTH Tooth Whitening

By Chris Weir, Sonrisa

Today everybody wants the perfect smile and bright white teeth. With many makeover programmes on television, people are becoming more aware of cosmetic treatments to enhance their appearance and look younger. Tooth whitening is a simple non invasive procedure that can enhance a person’s appearance and confidence. Why whiten your teeth? 1. To look younger 2. To be more attractive 3. To be more confident What causes staining and discolouration? 1. Genetic factors, some people’s dentine is yellow, brown or grey. This shows through the enamel to make the teeth look dark 2. Wear and tear or illness, can affect the colour of teeth 3. Tea, coffee, red wine, cola and smoking all cause staining and darkening of the teeth. 4. Build up of tartar, cracks in enamel and root canal treatment can affect the colour of teeth. What can’t be whitened? 1. All ceramic restorations, crowns, veneers, bridges, dentures will not change colour with whitening agents. 2. Root canal treated teeth that go dark will need special internal bleaching to change colour. External whiteners will not work. All natural teeth will whiten, but the degree of change depends on the underlying colour of the teeth. Gray teeth don’t whiten as well as yellow and brown. Yellow often give the best results. Tooth whitening is safe and effective if used properly, and doesn’t damage the teeth. Side effects are few, sometimes it may cause sensitivity, but this is only temporary, and will improve after a few days. How long does it last? Up to 3 years at best, but results will vary, and will be influenced by coffee, tea, smoking, red wine etc. You can top up your whitening when you feel they are darkening again, but the results will be better if done after a scale and polish at the dentist.

Types of tooth whitening 1. Tray whitening system 2. Light activated in surgery whitening 3. Over the counter take home whitening 4. Whitening toothpaste 1.The tray system involves taking impressions of your teeth and making precision fitting whitening trays. Then your teeth are cleaned thoroughly in the surgery and you whiten your teeth at home with the special gels provided. This normally takes 1-2 weeks to complete and the results are very good. You normally leave the gels in for 2-3 hours or overnight for faster results. You control how far you whiten your teeth, and you can repeat the treatment over and over again with the trays, all you may need is to buy some more gel later. The gels used are gentle and less likely to cause sensitivity. 2. With the in surgery light activated systems you whiten the teeth in 1 hour. This involves using much stronger gels and you are more prone to sensitivity, and sometimes the teeth may go darker after 2-3 days. The main disadvantage is that you will have to pay for the whole process again to top up your whitening later. 3. Over the counter systems tend to take a long time for whitening to occur and the results tend not to be as good. This is because they can only use gels with a very low concentration of bleaching agent and the process will take many applications. 4. Whitening toothpastes can enhance the effect of whitened teeth, and will improve the appearance of your teeth. They owe much of their effect to the silca abrasives in the paste which remove stains on the teeth. The whitening agents are unlikely to have much effect because their concentrations are very low and they are only in contact with the teeth for a few minutes. Yes, you can whiten your teeth, improve you appearance and confidence without damaging your teeth. Which system you choose depends on which you prefer, both the tray system and light activated whitening will whiten your teeth, but if you can wait 1-2 weeks, you will get better results with the tray system, and you are in control of how white you want to go.

KEY HEALTH Treatment by an Osteopath and Chiropractor The main point to remember is that, no matter which professional gets chosen, excellent care will be given. In simple terms, both osteopaths and chiropractors tend to treat similar conditions with similar techniques. Especially in Britain, where the two evolved along parallel but converging paths, there is a significant overlap between the disciplines. In some countries, such as Australia, the two fields are overseen by the same regulating body and a practitioner can graduate from university with both an Osteopathic and chiropractic qualification. Both osteopathy and chiropractic share a common history and philosophy which set them apart from the more traditional allopathic medical fields. Rather than focusing on the individual components of the body, osteopaths and chiropractors view the body in a more holistic manner, as a self-contained, self-healing, fully interconnected unit. The first proponent of this philosophy, Andrew Taylor Still, is credited with founding osteopathy in America in 1874. Just twenty-one years later, a former student of Dr. Still, Daniel David Palmer, founded the chiropractic discipline. In many cases, patient experiences with osteopaths and chiropractors will be very similar; however, there are some differences. When diagnosing patients, osteopaths and chiropractors both use visual inspection (observation) and palpation (touch). Chiropractors frequently rely on more diagnostic procedures, such as X-rays, MRI scans, blood tests, and urine tests. Osteopaths tend to place more emphasis on the physical examination and will generally refer patients on for more diagnostic procedures if required. The type of treatment a patient will receive at an osteopathic clinic can vary greatly. Osteopaths employ a number of techniques in order to influence the body’s innate healing system. These include; soft tissue, muscle work, joint articulation and mobilisation/manipulation. Some osteopaths work with and thereby influence organ function and movement (“visceral osteopathy”) and movement of cerebrospinal fluid (“cranial osteopathy”). The specific treatment will depend upon the patient’s unique circumstances. Osteopathic manipulation consists of positioning a joint into its close packed position and imparting a small but rapid impulse in order to separate the joint surfaces within their normal range of motion. This may produce a pop or a cracking noise; it is not a painful technique. The manipulation has the effect of freeing up any adhesions and encouraging better movement, it has a secondary, but very useful analgesic effect (pain relief). In contrast, chiropractors tend to concentrate on influencing the nervous system by employing a technique called “adjustment”. The actual technique is similar to that of osteopathic manipulation. The theory is that adjusting the vertebrae will allow it to return to its proper alignment along the spinal column and permit optimal nerve transmission. In an adjustment, the chiropractor applies pressure to the bone, unlocking it from its improper position. The technique is not painful, though patients do sometimes hear “popping” noises. These are thought to be due to small pockets of gas being released from within the joint

By Chris Howard

capsules. This is completely normal. The length of treatment also typically varies between osteopaths and chiropractors. In general, chiropractic appointments tend to be shorter as the practitioner focuses on adjusting the spine (this does not mean to say that chiropractors don’t adjust areas other than the spine). However, chiropractors tend also to see patients more frequently, as the muscles connected to a misaligned vertebra can pull the bone back out of place, and it may take a few adjustments for the spine to settle into its proper alignment. Osteopaths tend to spend more time with a patient per visit, as their focus is somewhat broader and their treatment techniques are more varied. Osteopathic treatments also tend to be spaced out over a longer period of time. Having described these differences, it is important to remember that both chiropractors and osteopaths address the same structures and use principally similar manipulative techniques. There are a huge number of variations between individual practitioners of both disciplines, from what they focus on to how they apply treatment. Each chiropractor and each osteopath is an individual with his or her own unique style of practice, and it is important for a patient to find a practice that fits his or her unique needs, regardless of the label.

KEY HEALTH Who is your Therapist?

By Michael Izon, Horizon Therapies

When you are in pain, or just simply need a massage to release stress in your neck and shoulders, where do you go? Certainly, cost is important as none of us are ‘rolling in it’ anymore (if you are, give me a call!). But are all therapists the same? Will you get the same treatment for 30 euros as you would for 60 euros? It is my belief that as for any profession, there are 2 things that separate the great from the mundane....knowledge and passion. Without these, you are just doing a job, and usually no more than adequately. But is a cheaper massage as good as a more expensive one? I think it depends on why you need the treatment. If you are just looking for a relaxing or a general Swedish massage, then most professional therapists will be ok for the job. I know of places in Fuengirola where you can get a 1 hr. sports massage for 30 euros...good luck to you! If you are in pain (and certainly this applies to me), then you want the best i.e. a therapist that will not only understand the problem, but will be able to treat the pain and give advice on

14

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

how to reduce the risk of the injury returning. All therapists are not the same...there are many therapists on this coast, and I don’t believe that I would allow myself to be touched by more than a handful at most...I don’t believe they are good enough, and some of them do types of treatment they are not trained to do e.g. spinal manipulation. It takes 5 years training to qualify to be a chiropractor! I certainly don’t want anyone untrained to be clicking my spine! It’s not just about cost.....its about value for money. It’s hard enough to make it, so you want to make sure its well spent and not wasted! As the saying goes “pay peanuts....get monkeys” So when you are looking for a massage, be aware that all therapists are not the same, some are trained better than others and prices do differ! Remember: Check your therapist’s credentials, and, cheapest isn’t always bestest! Stay in the best of health!

KEY HEALTH Dental Care with Manual Lymphatic Drainage Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised massage technique developed by Danish physical therapists Dr Emil Vodder and his wife Estrid during the 1930’s. They identified the importance of the lymphatic system and devised treatments for the whole body to alleviate swelling and congestion. MLD is very precise. It uses light rhythmical hand movements which gently stretch the skin in circular motions along the lymphatic pathways. This pumping movement stimulates flow in the lymph vessels and encourages the uptake of fluid from the tissues into the lymphatic system. The fluid drains into the lymph nodes where it is filtered and cleansed of dead cells, bacteria and other waste products before being returned to the blood stream.

By Patricia Kaines

MLD is being used successfully with dental patients following treatment. In the UK it is possible to find MLD therapists working alongside the dentists in their surgeries offering MLD to patients. The treatments can help to speed up the rate of recovery and alleviates pain which in turn reduces the need to take pain-killers. For further information and to discuss the benefits of MLD call Patricia on 666 170 868 or pop in to see her either Tuesday afternoons or Friday mornings at Clinica Medicare in La Cala de Mijas Tel: 952 835 776. Testimonial I consulted Patricia Kaines after painful dental work. An extraction had taken over 2 hours and I had needed 5 injections of anaesthetic to complete the work. The subsequent pain and discomfort was not relieved by high dose painkillers so I sought help from Patricia. She treated me with Manual Lymphatic Drainage in the mouth and used her Hivamat 200 machine on my face and jaw. This was very gentle and not at all painful, just a light massage – but one that brought immediate relief from the throbbing pain I was enduring. She explained fully how the procedure worked and how this would reduce pain and speed up the healing process. It was amazing... better than the strongest painkillers, and yet so gentle. When I visited my dentist for a check up a week after the extraction, she was astonished at how well I was healing. I would recommend a visit to Patricia for anyone undergoing dental work. Editor’s note: I was to have undergone surgery in August for which Pat prepared me as a case study giving me several pre-operation treatments to prepare the area for the operation. Fortunately for me, the operation has not gone ahead as planned so we will not be able to go ahead with this case study for now. However, I would like to thank Patricia for the treatments, not only pre-operative preparation but particularly the many other treatments for pain relief and lymphatic drainage which I have been able to experience first hand from the wonderful Hivamat 200 Deep Oscillation machine – so gentle yet so effective. Once again, thank you, Pat.

KEY HEALTH What can Q10 do? Heart Function Q10 is particularly important to help maintain the efficient functioning of the heart. Energy Coenzyme Q10 is found in the mitochondria (energy factor) of each cell and is involved in the Electron Transfer Chain – a process by which our food is turned into energy. Its role is similar to that of a spark plug in a car engine. Just as the car cannot function without that initial spark, the human body cannot function without coenzyme Q10. However, mitochondria are not always able to function optimally to produce energy. One factor which can be responsible is lack of Q10. This can cause tiredness and lack of sleep. Elderly people, in particular are advised to supplement as levels of Q10 decline with age. Immune System Q10 also has antioxidant properties protecting cells from free radical damage. (Free radicals are chemicals that are created by our own metabolism as well as from environmental factors such as smoking, air pollution, UV light exposure etc). Healthy Gums The concentration of Q10 in the gums has been shown to be lower in people with periodontitis (gum disease) or whenever there is a risk of infected of bleeding gums. Supplementation with Q10 may help reduce the numbers of unhealthy micro-organisms in the mouth as well as raise levels of Q10. Why Choose Pharma Nord Q10? - Reference product for the International Coenzyme Q10 Association - Tested in more than 70 studies - Manufactured to pharmaceutical standards - Patented oil-based preparation for maximum absorption - Presented in soft gelatine lightproof capsules - Blister packed, no exposure to atmosphere Do you Take Statins? Q10 and Statins – Statins are cholesterol lowering drugs, some of which are now available without prescription. Statins can be very effective medication, by blocking the body’s ability to make LDL (bad) cholesterol but, at the same time, they disrupt the body’s production of coenzyme Q10. Testimonials “I’ve taken Bio-Quinone Q10 ® for years. It is vital for energy production and, as you get older, it becomes very

By Annis Vital Shop important to top it up if you want to feel younger and keep active for longer”. “Lots of people take statins to control cholesterol, but they can drain you of Q10 which is needed by every cell in the body to produce energy. If you’re complaining of tiredness you may need a Q10 supplement”. (Dr Chris Steele MBE has been a regular on UK television for more than 20 years. “After going on statins I suffered such pain and muscle fatigue in my arm that I couldn’t fish any more. I felt so weak I couldn’t even hold a cup of tea in my hand. It was heartbreaking. I was introduced to Bio-Quinone Q10 ® by a neighbour of ours n France. She swore by it. It was a real hallelujah moment. It worked so quickly! That was two years ago and I’ve been able to enjoy fishing without pain ever since”. (Steve Negus, 58 Surrey).

KEY FEATURE Ask Joy

By Joy Fahey

In this issue we deal with changing a negative pattern of thinking. Dear Joy I am hoping you can help me as things seem to be always going wrong for me. I start a new relationship or a new project, I get all excited, I’m really happy and think I’m doing all the right things, I work really hard to get things going and everything goes well for a time and then for some reason it all goes wrong. This has happened so many times now, I’m losing my confidence and don’t know how to stop this happening. However a friend of mine has asked me if I want to join them in a new business, but I’m worried in case it goes wrong again and I will let them down. I’m happy to work hard but now I feel very apprehensive of starting a new venture, it’s as if there’s a jinx on me. Is there anything I can do to stop this happening again? Regards Jamie Hi Jamie What an interesting question and the good news is ‘yes’ you can do something about it. Self sabotage is a very common pattern and many people have difficulties in this area, so you are not alone. This problem usually starts at a very early age and feelings of ‘not being good enough’ or ‘not deserving of things’ can be triggered by things people, parents, teachers etc have said to us in the past which have set up a negative pattern of thinking. Although we might have forgotten exactly when and where it happened, it leaves us with an underlying feeling of insecurity of ourselves. We start out with a good intention but, as you say, something kicks in and apparently things go in the opposite direction we would like them to. First of all it’s great that you are recognising the problem, so you are on the right track! In simple terms we have two minds - our ego mind and our higher mind. We are all Divine Creative Beings living in an abundant world where everything is possible; this is where our higher mind works from.

22

However through our conditioned programmes we tend to lose sight of the greatness that is on offer. Our ego mind is formed from this conditioning and seeps down into our sub consciousness where we get identified with our various programmes and think that is our life and there’s nothing we can do about it. The statement ‘we can’t see the wood for the trees’ sums it up quite well. If you like, we get in our own way, because we are so wrapped up in the pattern. The question is, how do we change the pattern and move forward and open ourselves up to new exciting possibilities? Life is for learning and growing and realising our potential and at our higher level we create situations for us to do just that, learn and grow. If we can recognise this and take responsibility for where we are in our life now it is because we have something to learn, we can begin to make those changes. Firstly take a breath, relax and let go. If you are tense nothing can flow and move easily, when you relax you can give yourself some space to see more clearly. Life is only ever in this moment, right now we are creating out future second by second, what thoughts and feelings we have at any given moment sends out a signal which reflects back to us. If we are full of anxiety, tension and worry we reflect more of the same. Equally if we are relaxed and flowing we will attract more of what we really want. You have to discipline yourself to only think in these terms, it takes time but you will be amazed at the incredible positive results you will get. Every time you feel the negative thoughts creeping up on you relax, let go and get back in the flow. Some quiet time or meditation is very helpful to retrain yourself and adjust your negative dial to the right positive wave length. Life is one big Let Go! Let the universe give you everything it has to give, enjoy the process and the adventure and see your life turn around. Good luck with your business. Let me know how you get on With Love Joy www.joyfahey.com

KEY FEATURE Dario Meets -The Costa’s Man of Music - David Jeffers Mairs

By Dario Poli

In these austere times, when a great deal of what is written in the press and seen on our TV screens contain volumes of news that is negative and is at times often depressing. But one man who continues to push positively ahead in life with his affable charm, and good humour, is my friend, the one and only David Jeffers Mairs, the amiable, talented, professional musician and entertainer from Scotland, who with his voice and music, keeps us all smiling and enjoying the numerous benefits of living on this sun-blessed coast. I first met David at the glamorous Mijas Playa Restaurant, more than a decade ago where he has been the resident musician/entertainer for more years than I can remember – a fitting testament to his popularity, success and staying power. I discovered, that we shared the bonds of originating from Scotland, David born in Coatbridge and myself in Lanarkshire, and were absorbed into the challenging but exciting virility of Glasgow life, and later both working in the field of professional music and entertainment. David’s career began when he played organ in his first band at 15yrs old and as his emerging talent became noticed by his peers, he worked with many top bands in Scotland and performed with names such as The Searchers, The Easybeats, The Tremelos, Love Affair, Edison Lighthouse and many more. He later emigrated to the Costa del Sol in 1991 where he met and worked with singer song writer Mel Williams arranging the music for Mel‘s stage productions “Professor Fossil” and “Don Zabatel” Then came live TV performing the music for Maurice Boland‘s breakfast show where he worked with Lonny Donegan, Mike McGere, Bonny Langford, Linda Nolan to name but a few. He is a competent and prolific arranger /writer of music, composing his own songs as well as working on numerous works for clients who visit his studio in Fuengirola. I know

his competence from the personal experience of working with him on our musical compositions, which I may add, is always a pleasure. An example of this co-operation is a recording of our song “Corazon” produced at his Davlin studio (mentioned in issue 63 of this very magazine), that is currently being used by “Children for Peace Onlus” a UNESCO recognised charity and one of the leading international charities, based in Rome. We’re honoured by the recognition of this complex and compelling music and the video, can be seen on the website www.marbellamarbella.es, along with David’s marvellous highly praised song, “Your Beautiful” that recently was also used by the charity for their website. To help promote the Costa del Sol by using the power of music, we also wrote the music for a CD album titled “Living In The Sun” that is also on the Marbella Marbella Adelante site and You Tube. Besides his love of music, David is a willing supporter and energetic worker for various charities and his wife, Linda organised a successful charity event at Mijas Playa to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research and invited the cream of Costa del Sol‘s talent to help, with popular radio presenter Maurice Boland who compered the event. This was followed by a sensational parachute jump in Scotland, the first in his life, which he found exhilarating to put it mildly and raised considerable money for the charity. David Mairs’ entertaining style can be currently enjoyed at the beautiful Mijas Playa restaurant in La Cala, and at the popular and renowned Valparaiso situated on the Mijas Road. His talent, versatility and personality, have made him one of the best known and respected musicians on the coast and we wish him lots of luck for many years to come. (davlin3@hotmail.com). ASTROLOGY Mercury Retrograde This month’s article features Mercury, planet of communication, and the phenomena that astrologers and astronomers refer to as ‘Mercury Retrograde’. There is a period of around three weeks, three or four times each year when Mercury appears to stop and go backwards in the sky but this isn’t what’s happening at all, rather it’s an optical illusion based on the relative speeds and orbits of the Earth and Mercury around the Sun. An easier explanation might be to think of riding in a fast car which is passing a slower-moving car... the slower moving car appears to be moving backward, but it isn’t really, it’s just the relative speed and direction of the two cars that gives the illusion. Mercury, ruler of Gemini and Virgo, is the planet of the mind and intellect; communication of every kind can be affected when it goes retrograde i.e.telephone, mobile, computer, mail, writing, speech, air and land travel and plans we make are just a few to mention that could be affected. During this period we can experience communication breakdowns, setbacks and delays, far more than usual that is, and this is important to know because the next Mercury retrograde period is from the 6th until 25th November 2012. As an example during one Mercury retrograde phase my data mobile ‘died’ and shortly after the pc hard drive crashed taking all the programmes and info with it! I felt cursed until I remembered how many times I’d ignored the little hints from my pc that all was not well… but I’d carried on regardless! Lesson learnt? You bet! So please take heed and if anything does need fixing better to do it earlier rather than later!

By Janet Powell So what does Mercury Retrograde actually mean for us? Basically this is the time to go over all the stuff we’re otherwise too busy to think about, an opportunity for inner reflection when we might ask ourselves where am I heading in my life right now? This is a time to put the brakes on, reflect, review and re-assess to find out if where we’re heading is where we want to go! The retrograde period is not generally considered good for making new decisions, signing contracts or making new business plans and if at all possible these should wait until the cycle has completed, in this case the 25th November. Some delays could still be experienced during the following week or so while Mercury gets back on track and any situation involving communication is best handled with care so as to avoid glitches, personal misunderstandings and delayed or disrupted communications. Although there are likely to be unavoidable mishaps at this time, if we are totally honest with ourselves much of the frustration and stress experienced could be caused by our own carelessness in not paying attention to the finer details. Something else to consider is understanding what drives us? How far are we willing to stretch our belief system and go beyond principles in order to achieve our desires and find happiness? Mercury is going retrograde in the freedom loving sign of Sagittarius on 6th November and on the 14th November it moves into deep and secretive Scorpio where it stays for the remainder of the retrograde period. We can use this opportunity to reflect on past betrayals and disappointments and see how the armour we’ve adorned to shield ourselves also keeps us at arm’s length from others. But be sure to remember the positive aspects of Mercury in Scorpio: deep, probing conversations that facilitate a strong emotional bond; the revelation of personal information that can help to transform ourselves and others. To summarise, the Mercury retrograde period isn’t intended to antagonize or frustrate us but to slow us down enough to see exactly what we’re doing and where we’re going! The pace of life is fast enough and looking at it positively perhaps we ought to be grateful for this time out when we can take stock of our lives… and get ready for the next chapter!

Kindness in words creates confidence, Kindness in thinking creates profoundness and Kindness in giving creates Love…” Lao Tse

KEY FEATURE The Accidental Psychic - “The Gift” Just recently a good friend of mine, Cecilia, surprised with me a very thoughtful gift. It was a bottle of Holy Water. I am not religious but I do have respect of all faiths and, like all the gifts I receive, I placed the Holy Water alongside the Healing Oils in my studio. Cecilia explained that she just had to get this gift for me. I smiled as I thanked my dear friend and I didn’t question why she felt it ‘had’ to be Holy Water, I didn’t give it a second thought really. It touches me when given a gift and, over the years, I have learned that Spirit is so very clever! A number of days later, I received a call from a beautiful soul who claimed her body was being attacked. I gently asked her not to say another word and to come and see me for a healing session. She arrived the following day. As this lady lay down on the beautiful Healing Bed in my studio, I placed my hands on her heart and forehead. I knew instinctively that indeed there was something causing a great deal of pain within her; I cannot say what but it was very real and suddenly she began to scream. I am never in anyway distracted or upset by the screams or any sudden movement of someone receiving healing; it is not such an unusual occurrence, though also, it is not something that everyone will experience. Healing creates a flow and connection of pure energy and with each experience being very personal to the individual. My work over the past 5 years has enabled me to simply flow with the energy in the room and, to date, I have not had a single person who felt in anyway ‘frightened’ by the experience of Healing. As we continued, there began a twisting of her entire body and rapid flicking of her eyelids. I was drawn to look at her face - her eyes suddenly opened-wide and I felt her stare go deep into my soul. The energy was so intense. There were roars from her throat, her body bouncing up and down on my healing bed, the movement inside her throat and spasms through her body which even a contortionist would find difficult to do. My hands were now burning and her body dripping in wet. I smiled and reassured her as I gently whispered, ‘The dark cannot stay in the light’. What happened next was Spiritual, amazing and truly heart warming. With love and trust in my heart, I felt a gentle push from behind my back. As I turned, my eyes were drawn directly towards the bottle of Holy Water Cecilia had given me days before. In fact I felt it impossible to focus on anything else and suddenly it all made sense. The Holy Water was a gift brought to help this lady. I walked over and opened the Holy Water pouring it over her throat and forehead. With her eyes closed tight she screamed in her native tongue “¡Se Quema!” (‘It’s burning!’). I gently placed my hands on her heart and forehead and whispered to her again, ‘I make this promise to you now, my hands will not move from this body until you have left”. Two hours went by and my hands con-

tinued to burn but they did not move from her body. Finally she began to open her eyes and I could see, yes, she was back! This lovely Spanish lady looked at me and smiled, like a new person...she looked at peace, she looked so beautiful. The ‘What’ and the ‘Why’ play no great part in my life. The knowing that, in the end, “The Light” always wins is all I live by. This is the third time in my healing world something like this has happened; twice to others and actually once to me. I can say that this time it was the most intense of all and I was more than ready. To be asked by Spirit to do this was indeed an honour and to face this energy and have no fear inside me blew me away. It felt natural to me, like I knew exactly what to do as if I had done so before. A strange and a wonderful feeling indeed. I believe it is Spirit’s way that enables us to follow an instinct; such an instinct that may not be ‘on the surface’ continually but, when the need arises, it ‘kicks-in’ and we know exactly what we need to do. I am always guided as to what healing oils and sometimes crystals and other items I will work with. How clever was Spirit/Universe who brought to me and, ultimately to this wonderful lady, the gift of the Holy Water. Some may see this as a kind of ‘exorcism’. For me it was simply a cleansing of negative energy. As this lady went to leave I told her what I say to all the amazing souls that have crossed my path ‘There is no need to focus on this for another second! Walk out of my door and start living your amazing life. Your story will one day help others’. This is a true account of what happened during a recent Healing session. Two hours that will always remain in my heart and that I wished to share with you to show why I truly love what I do. For me personally, this experience reminded me of some of the most wonderful aspects to this path I am on. The gift of a dear friend was to play a significant part in the healing of someone about to walk into my life – now that is the power of sychronicity at its best! Letting go of your fears, learning to trust the heart, Spirit, the Universe we invite peace into our lives and an awakening to our own divine gifts. There is nothing that Love and Light cannot overcome. As I arrived home from my Studio that evening I felt, as I so often do, a familiar warm glow coursing through my body; the knowing that I’d participated in something quite extraordinary and spiritual. With some time to rest, I looked up and gave thanks for the gift of that wonderful day. As I sat back in my chair, I could hardly believe what I saw before me… the TV was switched on and a movie about to begin...”The Exorcist’….and I knew ‘Spirit’ was there winking at me! KEY FEATURE Excerpt from Tea at Sam’s CELINE Celine checked her watch. She had another hour to wait before her plane would leave. As usual she was too early. Unable to concentrate on her novel, she sipped a coffee, her eyelids heavy with tiredness. Closing her eyes she thought fondly of her father and then her husband. Dear Dad, darling James. She could not wait to get home. Home was important to her. All that Celine had ever wanted from life was a contented, settled family life. ‘Hope James has missed me. Can’t wait to see him again. And I wonder if Holland will ever feel like home. Did I pack my black dress - think I did? Hope Mum will be all right.’ She bit her bottom lip as she recalled the past few weeks and fought back the tears. It was a mercifully short flight from England to Holland. Schiphol Airport was packed that day, the pervading smell of continental tobacco and coffee not unpleasant. Standing at the luggage carousel she spotted her suitcase and reached out for it but was interrupted by a strong tanned hand that lifted it and placed it at her feet like a trophy. “Thank you.” She glanced up at the stranger. He had a practised smile that revealed perfect teeth. “Don’t mention it.” The man’s accent was thick, Italian perhaps. In his late thirties or early forties, he was drinking in Celine’s appearance. Starting with her wide hazel eyes, his gaze travelled downwards, past her slim waist and hips and then back up to her fine featured face which was framed with a mane of chestnut hair. Feeling embarrassed by the intensity of his gaze, Celine averted her eyes before hurrying away, pushing through the pressing crowds towards her goal. Scanning the sea of faces, she spotted her husband, staring into space as he so often did. Deep in thought no doubt as he waited for her, his dark hair and tall stature making him stand out in the crowd. How she loved this quiet, good-looking man. Still mourning her father, she could not imagine life without her husband and wondered how her mother was coping now that she was alone in the house. It was 1969 and Celine had taken it for granted that her father would be a part of her life for at least another decade but a cruel stroke had snatched him away. Almost running, she dropped her suitcase, flung her arms around James’s neck and relished the relief she felt to be with him again. It would be their fourth wedding anniversary the following week and she was content that they had fallen into a comfortable routine as a married couple. She had already planned the special meal that she would cook for him to celebrate the occasion – Coq au Vin was one of his favourites. Her mother had taught her to be a good cook and, a product of growing up in England in the 50’s and early 60’s; Celine never questioned her role as a dutiful wife. Although she would have liked children, he had insisted that this was not going to happen and so she had forced herself to be content just to have James. Always malleable, she did not object when he told her that she would have to give up her job as a fashion buyer and move with him to Amsterdam. Devotion had made her resigned to the fact that her career was a thing of the past. Her husband was ambitious, so she supported him in his chosen career. Accountancy bored Celine and they rarely discussed James’s working life.

By Sue Cross Celine was a creative and intelligent girl, but whatever she achieved she never felt that she had quite made it - perhaps because she never had affirmation from her critical mother or perhaps because she expected too much from herself. Or both. James rarely complimented Celine but her vulnerability was deep seated and not entirely due to his lack of attention. But she had a generous, kind spirit and a conscientious attitude by nature. People were drawn to her unselfconscious charisma, something that James, always a loner, discouraged. It was a paradox that whilst wanting to keep her to himself, when alone with her she was often ignored; like a costly ornament – at first cherished but soon unseen by its familiar presence. From an early age her main ambition was to find love and marry. She was steeped in unrecognised maternal instinct and practised it by cherishing her husband and Persian cat, Sasha. Celine was a mother without children. “Darling, I’ve missed you so much,” she held him close as the announcements were made at first in Dutch and then English over the airport loud speakers. He mumbled something inaudible against the buzz of the crowd and she wondered if he was embarrassed by her affection in such a public place. Lifting her suitcase with ease, he walked purposefully to the exit while she scurried behind him across the terminal. Glad to get into his car she closed her eyes, aware of the familiar smell of the leather upholstery and enjoyed a moment’s quiet before they set off home. Once on the highway he drove fast, overtaking each vehicle in the slow lane. She glanced over to him, aware of an uneasy feeling between them which she found hard to decipher. Her senses were acute with spent emotion and she jumped as a leaf fluttered onto the windscreen. Weariness and the stress of the past few weeks had finally caught up with her. Her father’s sudden death and the need to help sort out her mother’s affairs had taken its toll. James drove in silence along the thoroughfare that led them to the outskirts of the city. “What are you thinking?” she asked him before she could stop herself, knowing that this question always irritated him. “Nothing. Why do you always presume I’m thinking something?” “Sorry. You just looked deep in thought, that’s all.” “I’m concentrating on the traffic.” Wondering what was wrong, she tried to lighten the atmosphere, “You look well. Like the new shirt – where did you get it?” He paused before replying. “Can’t remember. How’s Veronica coping?” “Mum’s not bad considering. I don’t know whether it’s sunk in yet. But I think she’ll be all right. Of course she never stops talking so that hasn’t changed. She still takes a paranoid interest in the neighbours and is as nosy as ever. I wish we got on better but we don’t seem to have anything in common. Dad didn’t leave a will, which made things a bit complicated. Janet and I spent ages looking for it but Mum said he never made one. She would have known if he had. But I found out something when I was looking for the will. I’ll tell you about it later.” She smiled a weak smile across at him as he drove into the grounds of their modern apartment block, relieved to be home at last. James looked bored. He was preoccupied and had not been listening. For more information visit www.suecross.com

KEY FEATURE Stroke has a New Indicator - IMPORTANT !!! Blood Clots/Stroke - They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue. STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters..... S. T. R. STROKE IDENTIFICATION: During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ...she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Jane’s husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 PM Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don’t die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this. A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke.... He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE Thank God for the sense to remember the ‘3’ steps, STR. Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions: S *Ask the individual to SMILE. T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (coherently) (i.e. Chicken Soup) R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue NOTE: Another ‘sign’ of a stroke is this: Ask the person to ‘stick’ out their tongue. If the tongue is ‘crooked’, if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.

Ocean of My Dreams I listen to you breathe, Following your rhythm All my senses are awakened. Burdens flow away, Peace enters. Humbled by your greatness I wonder how I can have any fear? Following your ebb and flow Close my eyes and stand at the water’s edge. I’m drawn to you.

Composed By: Arlene Cashman

Your sound, your smell. It’s more than delight, it’s a love affair. Ecstasy in the moment you wash over me! A fusion of life, creating power Let it go, breathe it in. Discovering what matters. I am renewed I will return And often. To this endless love affair.

KEY SPORTS Olympics 2012

By Steve Billingham

Several months before the Olympics began I made 6 picks for gold medals of which I achieved three. Jessica Ennis in the heptathlon who also set a new UK record in the 100 metre hurdles of 12.54 and Mo Farah in the 5000 and 10000 metres. Dai Greene came fourth in the 400 metre hurdles while Phillips Idowu failed to even qualify for the triple jump final. The sixth pick, the GB football team, bowed out at the quarter final stage to South Korea on penalties. Craig Bellamy had an excellent tournament and was surprisingly taken off in this match and there was some good link up play between him and Ryan Giggs who also showed occasional flashes. Goalkeeper Jack Butland had an excellent match against Uruguay, making several good saves. I can see now why he was included in the England Euro 2012 squad.

A Pleasant Surprise

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE OLYMPICS?

PARA OLYMPICS

‘Usain Bolt – short and sharp - that’s how I like it. Also Daley and Waterfield in the diving’ remarked an observer. ‘I think the home draw has helped with the medals tally like the ’66 World Cup.’ ‘I am a bit disappointed that GB did not have a team in the women’s sprint relay though,’ he went on to add.

Dave Weir’s victory in the T54 800 metres showed aggression and excellent tactics and followed up triumphs in the 1500 metres and 5000 metres. Unbelievably Weir then won a fourth gold medal in the marathon.

‘Mo Farah winning, Tom Daley getting his medal plus Andy Murray’s gold,’ and ‘I enjoyed the Velodrome the most,’ were other replies. My own personal highlights were the thrilling and very fast 800 metres where Kenyan David Radisha basically sprinted both laps to win in a world record time of 1 minute 40.91 seconds. Mo Farah’s wins too – it was good and refreshing to see a British athlete hold off the Kenyans and Ethiopians in the final straight. Great Britain’s basketball matches with Spain and China were for me also highlights. Spanish guard Jose Calderon bore a certain resemblance to Henry in Goodfellas. The German shot-putter ecstatically jumping the hurdles in celebration after winning was a good moment.

34

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

Greg Rutherford was a surprise winner of the long jump with a leap of 8.31 metres – the first Briton to do so since Lynn ‘the Leap’ Davies back in 1964. Great Britain’s final medal tally was 29 gold 17 silver and 19 bronze. Classic Olympic Quotes ‘Men may steal my chickens, men may steal my sheep. But no man can steal my age’ – 1980 5000/10000 metres winner MirutsYifter – ‘Yifter the Shifter’ being vague when asked how old he was.

Jonnie Peacock stormed home in the T44 100 metres in 10.90 seconds beating rivals Oscar Pistorius (4th) and Alan Oliviera (7th). Oliviera had surprisingly beaten Pistorius into silver in the 200 metres but after plenty of pre-race hype, Pistorius won the 400 metres by 3 and a half seconds with Oliviera in fourth. Pistorius never looked like losing. A Chinese athlete in the men’s blind triple jump took his jump and a rake had been carelessly left near the sandpit and was very nearly landed on. Officials, too, looked to be too close to the path as the athletes ran in to take their jumps. Leicester lad Dan Greaves took silver in the men’s discus with a throw of 59.01 metres. Ellie Simmonds – ‘she was so good in the swimming that you kept watching her and remembered her,’ remarked an observer. Jonnie Peacock in the 100, Oscar Pistorius in the 400 and Michael McKillop’s slick running style and ‘doddle’ of the T37 800 metres and 1500 metres were personal highlights.

I developed my love of art when I completed my Art A level, followed by my Diploma in Art and Design at South Kent College in Dover and finally studying the fine art degree course at Canterbury Christ Church University College. I have my first exhibition since arriving here in this beautiful, stylish restaurant, Hedone, in La Cala. I have exhibited in many exhibitions in the UK including the Bayswater Road in London. My style here is typical Spanish with Flamenco dancers (Male and Female), Musicians and Matadors in a contemporary style. I love the movement in their dance, their bold colours which I hope you will agree is reflected in my artwork. I feel the sensual shape and beauty of the human form is so evident in this culture and really needs to be celebrated. KEY PETS Association of Professional Pet Carers A number of pet professionals who live and work on the Spanish Costas have agreed that there has been a need for a recognised association that assures pet owners of quality and honesty within the pet world in Spain, in order to ensure that pet owners get the quality and professionalism they deserve by choosing a member of the APPC for their needs. The APPC assesses all of their members according to their strict criteria which ensures they have the appropriate qualifications, experience, skills and insurance. Our members are required to keep these elements up to date, and adhere to a code of practice. If a member should fail to comply with this criteria, their membership will be withdrawn. So often in the past choosing a pet, vet, consultation, food, groomer, accessories etc. has been pot luck, and much stress has been caused, and damage done to the unsuspecting pets and owners before they spotted the dangers, or realised the discomfort it had caused their pet. The training of animals has changed a great deal in the last few years. It is no longer acceptable to use harsh methods in training, and the use of gentle, motivational methods are as successful as they are enjoyable to use. Of course, all trainers use slightly different techniques when teaching pet owners to train their own pets, but all members of the APPC use methods that are kind, fair and effective. Code of Practice This code applies to members of the APPC. Its purpose is to establish and maintain standards, to advise and inform veterinary surgeons and members of the public seeking anything from purchasing an animal to insurance and feeding it, veterinary services or the disposal of a pet, to further the understanding and advancement of good practice among members. Principles Members shall practice with integrity and shall recognise their responsibility to clients, clients’ pets and society in general. Their actions or advice should not knowingly cause psychological or physical distress or damage to any of these. The welfare of clients and their animals shall be paramount and shall not be made subordinate to commercial consideration. Members shall maintain professional relationships with their clients. They shall not exploit such relationships for improper personal, professional or financial gain, nor seek inappropriately to impose their own values on clients. Members shall not misrepresent their activities or make unrealistic claims to their clients or in their public statements. It should be made

clear whenever they are expressing personal opinion and speculative theories should be stated as such. Members shall respect the views and independence of others and shall not publicly denigrate their conduct or opinions. Members shall not seek to attract business unfairly or unprofessionally or conduct their practice in any way which would discredit the reputation of the APPC. Members are responsible for continuing their personal and professional development by undertaking further training and study and acquiring knowledge of new theory and practice. Practice The methods employed and advised by members shall be consistent with the principles of kindness and fairness to both clients and dogs. For this reason, the use of coercive or punitive techniques and equipment should not be used. The techniques employed and advised by members are assumed to be the application of scientifically-based research and knowledge and to result from practical experience of the use of non-compulsive methods. Where techniques are experimental, the client and, if applicable, the referring veterinary surgeon must be so informed, Members shall keep clients fully informed about the nature of and reasons for their actions and any possible risk or drawback that might arise from them. They shall not lead their clients to form unrealistic expectations of the outcome of any action or intervention. Members shall conduct themselves in such a way as not to undermine public confidence in their profession or the Association and shall not practice when physically or psychologically unfit to do so. Members may accept clients from a variety of referral sources or through direct advertising. Where such advertising refers to clubs or societies it should not assert or imply endorsement by the Association other than to state, where applicable, that all instructors are members. Members may use the letters APPC with their membership number after their name. Members must ensure that their name and membership number appear in all advertising. The logo may not be used except in conjunction with the members’ full details. Members who work with assistants who are not members are responsible for ensuring that such assistants act responsibly towards clients and are willing to conform to the spirit of this code. KEY PETS Taking Care of Your Dog

By Graham Stark, Macfin Rottweilers

This year has just flown by and for the fist time in many years we have had several litters which have been excellent quality and have all gone to good homes. Our final litter for the year has been born but once again we only have males, all are healthy and of excellent quality. Many people are asking about cheaper dry food as the cost of the so-called premier brands is becoming prohibitive. We have for many years used a breeder’s food which is much cheaper and can be used for any type of dog. It is produced in Barcelona in the same plant as many of the leading brands which cost approximately 70 Euros for a 14 or 15 kilo bag whereas the food we use costs 25 Euros for a 20 kilo bag. It is worth while thinking about. Many clients from Sotogrande to Benalmadena have used this food for all types of dogs without any problems for years. There are 3 different types - puppy

or small breeds, standard for normal dogs or high energy for working or breeding type dogs. Should you be interested or require further information you can contact me on 652 292 898. A word of caution to anyone thinking that Frontline will protect their pet from Sand Fly. Please take note the only products that protect your animal from contracting Leishmaniasis are Scalibor collars which are claimed to protect against ticks and fleas but are not 100% effective. X-Spot we have used for many years without any problems. Virbac injection method is new so does not have a track record and is very expensive for the initial procedure. There are other products available but they have not been finally approved. We have been testing one and so far we have not had any problems. What we can confirm is that it works very effectively against fleas and ticks.

KEY PETS Should My Dog “ENJOY” Going to the Groomer? Some dogs do. Dogs that I have been lucky enough to get from a young puppy and for their first time can end up enjoying the grooming process but to be honest most should expect their dogs to accept the groomer with a good nature. After all, what dog will gladly enjoy bath time, standing still while they are dried and given a hair cut? And that’s without having their toe nails, ears and anal glands done!! “Positive Grooming” is becoming more heard of now and it’s the form of grooming I have used for over 22 years. By this, I mean no force, muzzles, tying up, use of cages etc. This takes a lot of work on the groomer’s side and much understanding on the dog owner’s side, as perfect haircuts can be difficult to do while the dog is being trained... We need the owner’s understanding that at no point should the grooming session be painful or end up with the dog being tied up. We need to build trust up with the dog and this can take time. Pulling at knots IS PAINFUL and you should work hard at preventing knots or understand that should your dog have knots, then it’s much kinder to the dog to be shaved under those knots. Believe me, NO GROOMER wants a dog to leave them shaved within an inch of their life or for people to say “OMG” where did you get your dog groomed? We would rather they leave us looking amazing with people asking “where did you

get your dog groomed”? Can I have their number? POSITIVE grooming can really work wonders with nervous or aggressive dogs but this takes a very experienced groomer to work with dogs like this. Expect your groomer to be open and honest with you concerning your dog’s behaviour while grooming. Only then together can we work towards helping the dog, with you being given tips to use at home. Understand that sometimes it’s better for groomers not to cut the toe nails of a dog known for not liking this, as by doing so we will lose the dog’s trust and since we work with the dog’s feet, trimming fur, brushing etc, we need to have the dog’s trust. Toe nails are a huge issue with up to 50% of dogs being upset with this, so for that reason please never TRY to cut your pet’s toe nails without proper training. One bad experience really could last a lifetime. I will write more on POSTIVE GROOMING in the next issue but for now I will go on to say, when meeting a groomer for the first time expect to be greeted by a warm person, who is interested in your dog’s history and behaviour, giving you plenty of time to discuss anything you’re worried about, that’s happy to show you where they work. If you don’t get a warm feeling about them, you can bet your dog won’t either, so ask around. Stop other dog owners and ask them which groomer they use, do a little research because “your dog’s worth it” ........

KEY FINANCE Let’s Twist Again Like We Did Last Summer Here we go....lets twist again like we did last summer, no not the dance but the Federal Reserve providing another $40billion of mortgage backed securities in a further attempt to prop up the American economy. The big issue for the States like a lot of places is the number of people unemployed and with the focus on the forthcoming election, how to tackle and solve this issue is near the top of the candidates’ strategies. In addition to the buying of mortgage backed securities The Federal Reserve also changed its guidance on how long it expects to see interest rates remain exceptionally low. Will both these measures stimulate the economy only time will tell, what we do know however is that following these announcements the dollar lost some ground against the euro and the pound. In the eurozone we had a mixed bag of news with inflation being pushed up whilst industrial production rose by .6% in July as a strong performance in Germany offset not so good data elsewhere. The news was overshadowed by the ECB announcement to do whatever it can to support the euro and agreed a bond buying programme. This decision has provided a boost to our currency and the markets also responded in a positive manner, the only possible stumbling block could have

come from Germany but The Constitutional Court’s decision to reject an injunction against the bailout fund being used was good news for the euro. In the UK they can certainly hold their heads high with the undoubted success of both Olympic games and the boost to jobs which in July saw job numbers increase to 236,000 and unemployment falling slightly however going forward the key issue to tackle is “how to persuade banks to lend to people” and hopefully create more employment opportunities and drive consumer spending and demand. In China with growth slowing at it fastest since 2009 and the government there has looked again at a Yuan stimulus. Going forward keep an eye on Oil prices which have risen 30% in 4 months and the ongoing situation between Japan and China which threatens up to $340 billion worth of trade between the 2 countries. With volatility again in the currency market now is the time to sort out your currency transfer or simply check you are getting the best deal so we recommend you contact our preferred foreign exchange company Moneycorp on 951319700 or email costadelsol@moneycorp.com and let them know The Key to Mijas Costa sent you.

KEY LAW What is a “Unanimous Agreement”? As a solicitor and property administrator, I have realised that many people are confused about what could be considered a unanimous agreement. Some clients think that when the law obliges us to get the unanimous consent of the community that it is necessary to get the vote of every single owner in the General Assembly. As a consequence of this thought, some owners consider it impossible to get any unanimous agreement in a community. Evidently, should it be necessary to have every single owner in the General Assembly to vote in favour of the motion it would be nearly impossible to approve an agreement unanimously, but the law does not oblige us to have everybody in the meeting supporting the agreement. The LPH only establishes that the agreement should be approved by the people attending the meeting (no matter the number) with no votes against (some owners could abstain) and this agreement should be notified to the rest of the owners who were not at the meeting and if none of them notify the administrator that the decision is against the agreement within 30 days from the date of notification, then the motion is carried. For instance, in a community with 100 owners, from the 10 people who are in a meeting, 8 of them vote in favour of a motion included in the agenda and the other 2 abstain. The minutes of this meeting are notified by the administrator to the community to the other 90 owners who did not attend the meeting. After 30 days from the date of notification, the agreement would be considered unanimous if none of these 90 owners had notified the administrator that his decision is against the agreement. Article 17.1 LPH establishes: “For above mentioned purposes, those votes from absent proprietors to the meeting, properly mentioned, who, once they have been informed about the agreement adopted by the present ones, and according to the procedures stated on article 9th, do not declare their discrepancy to who exercises community secretary functions, in a thirty natural

By Jose Luis Navarro, Intercala’s Solicitor and Property Administrator

days term, by any means which allows to have a record of its reception, will be considered as favourable votes”. Taking all of this into consideration, you may guess how it is not impossible to get the unanimous consent of the owners when according to law, this quorum is necessary to have the motion passed. As always, get proper advice.

KEY LAW The Data Protection Agency Records a 12% Increase in Fines for 2011

By Victoria Anzola, Iberdata 21

MADRID - 25/09/2012 In 2011 The Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) registered an increase of 51.6% in “denuncias” (7,648) and a 34% increase in applications for the protection of rights as opposed to those presented in 2010, according to the 2011 Annual Report presented yesterday. The declared resolution of infractions grew 37.7% with a total of 898, split equally between private individuals and public administrations. In the private sector 505 economic sanctions were imposed with a running total more than 19.5 million Euros, a 12% increase over 2010. The sectors with the highest amount of sanctions were in telecommunications and finance. According to the AEPD claims from people whose details had been improperly filed were in arrears. What should you do if you find an image or video of yourself on the Internet without your consent? Sexting is what we call the distribution, publication or sending of images and videos of a sexual nature that are intended for personal use. Normally this is done between young people whose concept of privacy, the risk of not taking proper precautions against risks and even “trendy” has extenuated this problem. Nonetheless it also takes place between adults. There has been much written about sexting and its consequences. The main thing is the loss of control over an image of yourself once it is on the web. Nobody can ensure that either themselves or the recipients of this image will be the only ones with access. Nor that once it is on the network it can be withdrawn. Neither the sender nor the recipients, nor the server itself in which it is hosted. I insist – nobody. For this reason let me clarify a couple of points about images and videos which we publish ourselves in case you have the misfortune to find yourself with a problem derived from this practice. 1. A personal photo is protected by law. Nobody can use it without the express consent of the person that appears in it. To do this is a criminal offence. Included in this case are minors whose images are even more protected. Not even the parents can use an image of their child without causing some

46

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

kind of damage (and not just physical) regarding the same. 2. If someone sends you an image or you see it on the web, it does not mean that you can use it, distribute it or send it to other people. If you were the intended recipient or a group, and you do reproduce it, you could be charged with revealing secrets which is also punishable. 3. Even if the person in question gave you permission to take his photo or video, this does not mean that you can use the image for the same reasons stated in numbered paragraphs 1 & 2 above. Think about it before you publish your image. If you think that nobody will see it, simply don’t do it. Mobile phones, which are the objects used most for taking or sending these “private” photos are very sensitive to this. Loss of the handset or having it stolen can bring them to light. Also if you have taken your mobile to be repaired, you could find your images appearing in places that you do not want them to. Be responsible. The same applies to computers that are used by many (work, shared housing etc). I re-enforce, use your common sense. Following a problem where your image or video has been published or if you feel for sure that it is being used without your authority, make an immediate “denuncia”. You can do this at any police or Guardia Civil station. Of course every web hosting service has a system to claim the removal of the images. Look for the link in question and ask for its withdrawal. If you can, make a screen capture and keep any data, email or ticket to attach to the “denucia”. For more information visit our website and remember we have a training course to help you understand and implement the law. If you have employees, you can do it at zero cost! KEY FINANCE Where now for your UK pension fund, Malta, New Zealand, Gibraltar, (or maybe Switzerland)? Managing Director Premier Pension Solutions SL Stephen Ward was a member of the UK Government’s Pensions Industry Working Group advising HMRC on the pensions’ legislation changes which introduced Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes (QROPS) in the 2006 Finance Act The main jurisdictions recommended by pension transfer advisers are Malta and New Zealand, with Gibraltar finally joining the market last month at the 3rd attempt. (However for those with larger funds, in excess off £ 70,000, and over age 55, the new Swiss QROPS exclusive to PPS offers by far the highest immediate lump sum payments with all the security and flexibility the Swiss jurisdiction has to offer). Malta QROPS is popular but… Because of its location within the EU, Malta seems to be, for most advisory firms, the jurisdiction of choice. Although in some circumstances Malta can be an attractive jurisdiction, if you are looking for the maximum level of benefit flexibility, then New Zealand wins the argument hands down. Take this example for instance:At age of 45, initial transfer value was £ 50,000, and through good investment management (just over 7% per annum net), it doubled over the following 10 years to be worth £ 100,000. If offered the choice, which would you prefer...

To have the option of taking a lump sum from age 55 of:1. £ 30,000 from a Maltese scheme Or 2. £ 65,000 from a New Zealand scheme? Alternatively, at age 55 assuming a fund value of £ 100,000, would you prefer income from a Maltese scheme of up to (currently) £ 4,100 a year, or up to £ 16,000 a year from a New Zealand QROPS? It is fair to say that Maltese schemes offer more investment flexibility, but this, for most people, is not the primary consideration. The level of benefits available from a Gibraltar QROPS are similar to those available from a Maltese QROPS, but with higher charges. And the winner is… So New Zealand would easily win the gold medal for funds transferred of less than £ 70,000... Cerveceria Tipi Tapa has a selection of fine meats from the BBQ all served with potatoes and salad, such as Mixed Grill for two people, other fine cuts of steak, pork or various meat skewers, a selection of fish etc. As the name of the restaurant suggests, it also serves a full range of the ever popular Spanish “tapas”, small portions either for a snack or to pick and mix with your friends. Tapas are served all day so Tipi Tapa is also an ideal place to eat if you are a little outside normal dining hours. We really enjoyed the Lamb Kebab which was absolutely delicious, taken from the choice cut of the leg and slowly grilled until tender and tasty. Mousakka was also tried and tested as well as Dolmades. For dessert we had a great portion of home-made Baklava. It was not overly sweet. Cannot believe that the three course menu was only 10 Euros.
