Q MY BLONDE HAIR IS ALWAYS YELLOW. HOW CAN I GET RID OF THIS? A You need to consult a hairdresser to make sure you are using a highlift ash colour with 40 vol or 12% peroxide if you are not using this already. The only way to get rid of the yellow is by using a little bleach in tin foil as very fine highlights so as not to damage your hair and this can’t be done more than three times a year as it will cause damage.

Q I HAVE A RED COLOUR IN MY HAIR AND IT FADES REALLY QUICKLY. HOW CAN I STOP THIS? A We have some really good products now to stop this. I have red hair and I use a red conditioner and shampoo. This puts the red back into your hair every time you wash it. You need to wash your hands straight afterwards as it colours them as well. We sell these products at HAIR MAGIC. There is also sandy blonde, black and chocolate brown.

Q MY HAIR IS GETTING REALLY GREY AND I WANT TO COLOUR IT BUT I’M TERRIFIED! A If you are not sure about it you can put a rinse through your hair that only lasts eight washes. Alternatively, try some hi lites (lighter) or low lites (darker) or maybe just at the front. It is best to experiment carefully. Also if you are not sure about a colour, always choose the lighter one because it is easy to go darker but it’s much harder to get a colour that is too dark out of your hair.

KEY HEALTH Soft Drinks Can Damage your Dental & General Health

Soft drinks, known as soda, pop, or fizzy drinks can cause serious health problems. They are one of the most significant dietary sources of tooth decay. Acid and acidic sugar by-products soften enamel contributing to the formation of dental cavities. We are drinking more soft drinks across all demographic groups, but especially among children and teenagers. There has never been more choice of fizzy drinks than there is today. They come in all shapes, colours flavours and sizes. Over the last 50 years the fluid quantity has increased in size. Their long term use has a cumulative effect on the tooth enamel, slowly destroying the protective enamel layer of teeth and leaving the teeth sensitive and more susceptible to decay.

4 to 10 year olds get a fifth of their sugar intake from soft drinks, 11 to 18 year olds get a third of their sugar intake from soft drinks.

These are very high levels for the most at risk groups. Children’s enamel is softer and more at risk to acid attack than adult enamel. Yet this is the group we can influence the most by controlling what we buy for the family. We should limit the number of soft drinks we give to our children, and reduce the frequency of their consumption.

Topical fluoride treatment from your dentist Changing to sugar-free fizzy drinks has little beneficial effect, as they contain high levels of citric and phosphoric acids which can damage tooth enamel, and some reports suggest artificial sweeteners have a detrimental effect on health and may increase appetite and weight.

To summarise, we should limit our intake of fizzy drinks, and not rely on them as our main source of fluid intake, especially during childhood, when we are more at risk.

KEY HEALTH Why should we maintain Healthy Cholesterol Balance?

Cholesterol is a fatty substance known as a lipid and it is vital for the normal functioning of the body. Its roles include providing cell structure, insulating nerve fibres, making hormones and aiding in digestion and absorption of facts.

80% of the cholesterol in the body gets produced from within, mostly by the liver. From there it is carried in the bloodstream to other tissues. Cholesterol also comes from foods, especially those high in fat.

Having an excessively high level of lipids in your blood (hyperlipidemia) can have a serious effect on your health as it increases your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. We need to ensure our cholesterol levels stay within a normal, health range.

Good and Bad Cholesterol In order for cholesterol to reach those sites where it is needed, it needs “a ride”. In the body there are some molecules called lipoproteins that carry cholesterol to the different sites. There are two types LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) and HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein). LDL is also known as “bad” cholesterol because it deposits cholesterol in places where it may accumulate and cause trouble. HDL on the other hand is referred to as “good” cholesterol because it gathers excess cholesterol in the blood-stream and brings it back to the liver for re-processing.

KEY HEALTH What is Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis) and How Can It Be Resolved?

If you have ever been given the “cold shoulder” then you know it can be unpleasant, but a frozen shoulder is worse as it probably takes longer to recover from. As a student (and it is a while ago!), we were taught that a frozen shoulder can take 6 months to develop, 6 months of difficult pain and 6 months to resolve. Hopefully with early advice and treatment it can be a much shorter-term hindrance to daily life. It may sound surprising, but as an osteopath I generally treat far more neck and shoulder/arm problems than low back or leg complaints.

“Frozen shoulder”(or medically speaking, Adhesive Capsulitis) is not a pure diagnosis as such in my opinion, but refers to a condition which can occur as a result of a more specific illness, condition, problem or injury in the shoulder or elsewhere in the body. It’s used when a patient has difficulty associated with pain and stiffness at /near the top of the arm when trying to lift the arm out from the side of the body or with internal rotation (reaching behind your back) or external rotation (behind your head), so to avoid pain the patient stops using the arm for everything except very limited movements and so the shoulder appears to be “frozen” and is held to the patient’s side for protection.

Differential Diagnosis i.e. (what it’s NOT) is a very important part of the osteopathic examination and history taking (the patient’s story) and shoulders can be complex.

There are probably well over 30 diagnoses of shoulder pain which relate just to the “shoulder” itself (which includes the gleno-humeral joint, clavicle, and shoulder blade plus some input from the neck, ribs and sternum) such as impingement syndrome, or rotator cuff tear or acromio-clavicular arthritis or the one I believe I see most of, biceps tendonitis.

But a variety of other things can “mimic” or cause referred pain and here I mention only a few without wanting to alarm you, including apical lung cancer (Pancosts tumor) breast tumours, ischemic heart disease, arthritic neck joints and disc prolapses, osteoporosis, diabetes, pancreatic, liver or spleen inflammation. An osteopath will refer you to another medical specialist if necessary for scans, x-rays or blood tests.

Once it’s established that the pain is structural, shoulders can be more complex to treat than other parts of the body as they usually require more input from the patient in terms of changing or adjusting their lifestyle habits, to prevent ongoing irritation to the shoulder and to prevent future relapses especially in the areas of work, sleep and sport. The shoulders sacrifice stability in order to increase mobility, this is their main attribute. They (usually!) have an incredible range of motion and are only held onto our bodies by tendons and ligaments which can easily be irritated by repetitive/awkward movements, especially when the shoulders are not “sitting” correctly in relation to the rest of

By Chris Howard your body. If you think about it, shoulders are also useful indicators of your mental and emotional state, whether open and relaxed, or tight and hunched up due to internal stress or an automatic unnoticed response to repressed anger, fear or anxiety.

Of course they are often painful simply as a result of injury or overuse and some sleeping/sitting postures but an osteopath, as a holistic practitioner, has to consider all possibilities when a patient presents at the clinic.

Treatment using soft tissue and articulation can sometimes be a little painful to start with (not always!) and is aimed at undoing any tightness in the surrounding muscles and joints, stretch and exercise to increase muscle strength and joint stability and a lot of advice on how to reconsider your posture when working, carrying, driving, computing etc, and the best use of ice and anti-inflammatories are all part of the process to recovery.

KEY HEALTH Gambling... some fun or a true addiction?

“Gambling” a form of entertainment or recreation? There are many possible gambling activities, such as: slot machines, card games, roulette, state lottery, horse and dog racing, or bingo. In the last two decades the opportunities to gamble have expanded tremendously with the advent of Internet and legalized gambling. It is important to differentiate a social gambler from a pathological one. The former enjoys gambling with no harmful effects, the latter, present with a behaviour that harms themselves or others in major life areas. Professional gamblers on the other hand, will be disciplined and not show risk taking behaviours. Gambling as a disorder happens when a person gambles compulsively to such an extent that the wagering has a severe negative effect on his or her job, relationships, family life or financial status. The person won’t be able to stop gambling despite these harmful effects.

Men develop the illness earlier and more frequently than women (ratio 2:1), but they reach out for help more often.

Women because of the stigma attached to this disorder tend not to get treatment. One in every fourth case will be able to describe a close family member who suffered from a gambling disorder. The disorder develops slowly over time in most cases, but occasionally, social gamblers who have been using gambling as a recreational activity suddenly start doing so compulsively as a consequence of a major life event such as a divorce or the death of a family member.

Pathological gambling refers to two items: the inability to control the impulse to gamble and alteration in the person’s life in different areas of their lives such as personal, financial, familiar and marital.

If a person can identify with or has five or more of the following symptoms they have a gambling problem: 1. They think about gambling frequently 2. Uses more and more money when they gamble 3. They find it difficult to stop gambling 4. Lies or keep hidden the amount of gambling they do 5. They get moody and irritable when you try to stop gambling 6. Has tried to get money in illegal/ immoral ways to be able to gamble 7. Needs other people who help him/her financially because of the financial loss caused by the amount of gambling 8. They use gambling to deal with emotions or problems 9. Has problems at work or at home caused by gambling Treatment consists of individualized programs that include

cognitive behavioural approaches, insight oriented psychotherapy and pharmacological interventions. Gamblers Anonymous although promising, and in some cases very helpful, is a type of treatment less scientifically supported.

Many of these patients experience high levels of dysfunction within the family setting and family sessions as well as couple’s counselling are recommended. It is common that patients suffering from gambling disorders present with other psychiatric disorders such as substance abuse and/ or anxiety. It is very important to detect and treat comorbid psychiatric problems; otherwise the patient’s recovery could be jeopardized. There is a higher prevalence of attention deficit disorder in childhood in males diagnosed with pathological gambling. Females have a higher rate of major depressive disorder and in some instances use compulsive gambling as an escape from depression. Very often, the pathological gambler seeks the mood alteration as the ulterior motive for their compulsive activities. It is the excitement and the emotional rush that these patients are after, the money itself is not that important. Pathological gamblers tend to be highly competitive, inpatient, impulsive and risk takers. They get easily bored and some of them are superstitious, needing a certain outfit or item to take along when they go gambling. The social environment in the casino or at the races for example can be stimulating and contribute to the patient’s sense of being high.

Denial, as it happens in most addictions, is very common amongst these patients and family members can be the ones pushing the patient to seek for help in the initial phases. The rate of response is not related to the level of motivation of the patient when he starts treatment but to the number of weeks of participation in the therapeutic program. Treatment normally will last a few months. “Once a pathological gambler always a pathological gambler”, patients will not be able to gamble in a social manner again and it is very important to monitor relapses and to prevent the process of switching addictions. The prognosis is good if the patient ends up committing to the therapeutic process.

KEY HEALTH Positively Pink’s 2012 Breast Screening Programme closes for another year

Positively Pink is a Mijas based charity and its sole purpose is to raise the necessary funds to provide education, support and a FREE breast screening programme to British Women and Men who live on the Costa del Sol. The screening programme is a comprehensive screening process (Gold Standard) that includes a consultation, physical examination, health education, a mammogram or ultrasound or in some cases both and an English translation of the result(s). This is carried out in conjunction with Clinica Medicare, a Nurse led British health centre based in La Cala de Mijas and Dr David Deardon a UK trained Specialist and the head of The British Surgical Clinic. Medicare and its medical team provide their time, clinic space and expertise free of charge for the charity.

During the 2012 screening programme over 420 men and women have accessed the FREE programme with 9 ladies receiving a positive diagnosis but all are being treated and doing well. During the 2012 programme Positively Pink have spent in excess of 35,700.00 Euros to ensure that screening is available to all UK expatriates living on the Coast, regardless of age or circumstances.

If you step into the new Da Bruno you will find it a little bit different from what you are used to from the other Da Bruno’s, as this restaurant is a touch more elegant, using much less of the corporate colors, of green and yellow.

I was fascinated to learn that until the present time, Da Bruno’s has served more than 10 million clients already! Not surprising if you look to their incredible variety of choices, which their menu provides. There is something for everybody. As with every good Italian restaurant, they offer a lot of homemade Pasta, crispy Pizzas and delicious Risottos.

For the Risotto you will have to calculate to wait a few minutes more because every plate in Da Bruno’s is made a la minute! But if that’s not enough, you want to have some fresh fish like Dorada in a salt-cout or Lubina cooked in a bag of aluminum foil with fresh vegetables and seashells.

Both a festival for the eyes and not only for your palate! In any case you should try the “Pil-Pil” as starter.

They serve shrimps in a light spicy Olive Oil sauce and it’s hard to find a better Pil-Pil around. This is the most widely sold dish in the whole of the Da Bruno group. Just try it. You will be positively surprised. But if you are a lover of meat you’ll find on the menu some of the best pieces of Fillet Steak I ever tried and highly recommendable is the “Rossini” Filet with Goose Liver on top in a fine sauce, hmm!!! And the Rack of Lamb with fine Herbs is well worth a try and recommended.

If that’s not enough, when you visit Da Bruno’s in Centro Idea, you’ll find every day of the week, a menu, starter and Main plate for only Euro 15--. This is exceptional value for money for such high quality food and service.

Showered and feeling refreshed, Celine fell into bed alone and luxuriated in the pure cotton white sheets which felt soft next to her bare skin – quite a contrast to her mother’s yellow nylon easy care bedding. Eventually James joined her, his breath sour with whiskey. She waited for him to reach out for her but instead he kicked the cat off the bed and fell into a deep slumber.

Tears of rejection pricked her eyes, as the pent up grief that she had hidden from her mother in order to be strong, ran down her cheeks and soaked the pillowcase. Reaching out for Sasha, she fell asleep holding the animal close to her face.

The next morning, James left early for work, without explanation. As an executive accountant for a city stockbroker, his work was always a priority.

“Goodbye dear. Have a nice day.” Celine muttered to the wall before getting up.

She felt disorientated to be back in Holland and thought she would busy herself to take her mind off the events of the past few weeks. Checking the laundry basket, she took out the shirt that James had been wearing the previous day and decided to change the sheets before unpacking. As she was peeling off one of the pillowcases her heart started to thud and she felt sick. A long black curly hair was stuck to it like a thin snake. She removed it and examined it closely, feeling breathless and so lightheaded that she found herself clinging to the bedstead to keep her balance. Then she remembered his words the night before “Blast, I forgot to change the sheets.” His words resounded in her head like a ghostly chant.

Then suddenly her mind became sharp and clear. She now felt certain she knew why he looked different. His hair was unusually long and he was wearing new trendy clothes. He had a mistress. But he couldn’t. He loved her. Just as she could not countenance the thought of betraying James, so she believed that he would feel the same way. Looking again at the long black hair, she placed it carefully like a rare specimen under a perfume bottle on the dressing table. Then she stood back and stared at it in disbelief.

‘There must be a logical explanation,’ she thought. But the only explanation that she could imagine was that James no longer loved her. She wanted to scream “NO!” Feeling as if she was in a dream and not able to wake up, a sudden panic engulfed her. Should she speak to her husband? If she confronted James she knew that he would deny it.

Then, she wondered if she should question her neighbours in case they had seen a girl with long black hair entering the apartment.

‘I only know them to nod to, how can I ask such a personal question?’ she reasoned.

Going to the telephone, she started to dial her mother’s number, longing for her familiar voice to offer comfort and advice, but when the phone started to ring she slammed the receiver down. She could not upset her mother at such a difficult time in her life. Taking a deep breath, she took control of her wayward emotions and planned her strategy.

Starting in the bedroom, she worked her way through each drawer, at first methodically and then frantically, looking for evidence. A scarf or item of clothing, maybe. Rummaging through James’s pockets the only thing she found was a receipt from American Express. It seemed that he’d been on a spending spree whilst she was gone. She sniffed his jackets for any tell tale signs of perfume and thought she detected Aramis. James never wore aftershave or cologne even though she tried to persuade him to use it for her benefit.

‘He was probably standing next to someone in a lift,’ she rationalised.

Thinking that there may be some evidence in the sitting room, she proceeded to throw the sofa cushions onto the floor and ran her hand along the back of the upholstery.

Nothing. Just the dark hair and a premonition. She wandered about the flat in disbelief, pausing at the sideboard to gaze at their wedding photo as if somehow it could restore her to sanity. The couple in the picture looked carefree. She was gazing up at him as a wry smile played across his mouth, his dark good looks heightened by the suit and white shirt that he wore with such elegance. What had happened to them? Lifting the photo, she held it to her breast and remembered her wedding and the hopes that she had for a future with James. She had never imagined that this could happen to her. This sort of thing only happened to other people. What had she done to deserve this? Celine had always thought of herself as a good wife who put her husband’s happiness before her own. Where had she gone wrong?

The couple in the photo were strangers. She placed it face down on the sideboard as if to dismiss the events of the past hours from her life.

A new advice and information centre run by volunteers for the local older English-speaking community has opened its doors at Dona Lola, Calahonda, Mijas Costa. The Advice Centre will be managed by the Age Care Association, Costa del Sol, and funded entirely by donations. It will provide advice and guidance on the services available on the Costa del Sol area, and Coffee Mornings will be held at the Advice Centre every Tuesday at 11 am. This is an exciting development for Age Care Association.

Julie Grenfell, Welfare Leader, Calahonda said: “Having access to information and support when you need it is the key to helping older people cope with the day to day challenges they can experience living in Spain. The Advice Centre will provide a personalised service to support them with the right services and access to information by volunteers who understand their needs.”

The Advice Centre will be managed by volunteer Claudia D. Langer who speaks Spanish, English and German, and

Dear Joy My partner and I moved to Spain six years ago as his family live here and have a small business which he is involved with. But now he has left me and our two very young children. I am finding it very hard to cope with day to-day life and find myself snapping at the children. The worst thing about it all is that now I am completely on my own. I don’t really have many reliable friends, only his family - who just want me to stay here because of the children. I don’t have any family other than an aunt in the UK and feel as if I am completely stuck. I don’t feel I can do anything about it - I can’t socialise because I have no one to look after the children. My ex and his family won’t. Please help me. I feel completely on my own and I’m so lonely.

Susan Dear Susan I’m very sorry to hear of your troubles and feeling so lonely and unsupported. Break-ups can be very hard at first, but it is possible to recover from them and rebuild a happy life.

It’s true that time heals; you will be amazed at how something like this can often turn out for the best in the end, even though it doesn’t feel like that now.

There’s a lovely saying that goes ‘If you believe you can you’re right, if you believe you can’t, you’re right!’ So first off let’s look at the different possibilities. There are many different support groups that you can contact who can really help you to get your confidence back again and stop feeling so lonely and isolated. The internet can be a good place to start, there are great communities for example www.ivillage.co.uk offer information and chat rooms so you can find others in similar situations. Although you weren’t married, www.divorceaid.co.uk suggests helpful ways of overcoming the heartache for you and your little ones.

Counselling can greatly reduce recovery time. Local religious organisations can be a good source of support, with a creche for little ones and social events for adults. Depending on the ages of your children, you may find there are playgroups, parent and toddler groups, activities in your area, music, dance, art or sports either there or in community centres. There’s quite a list of these in this magazine and also the local English newspapers.

All of these offer chances to make new friends both for yourself and for your children. Besides, it can add interest to your life.

However difficult it may seem, it’s important to start thinking forward rather than backward. You have a great future in front of you if you want to have, our thinking frames our feelings. If you’re constantly focusing on what has happened rather than on what can happen, it will take you longer to feel better.

Lots of people like yourself are looking for new friends, especially here on the Coast, we are all expats! Therefore it makes sense to initiate conversations with as many as possible to maximise your chances. Friendly overtures such as questions showing interest in other people’s children, helping make the tea or pass round the juice and rusks at a playgroup are all a good start. Most people will respond warmly. But you have to get out there and meet them!

You aren’t alone, and if you want help, you have to ask for it! Most people are glad to lend a hand, particularly if you’re grateful and can offer them help or friendship in return for example, swop babysitting nights, have a little children’s party etc. You could even start your own mothers and baby group at home. There are many possibilities to helping others, whilst helping yourself. The past is not a map of the future, it’s inevitable things will change and you can come out of this happier and even wiser. I wish you and your family all the best.

KEY SPORTS Darts and Snooker Roundup BDO WORLD DARTS CHAMPIONSHIP - Frimley Green, Surrey, January 5-13 18 year old Dutchman, Jimmy Hendricks, was on fire as he took out the 3 time World Champion Martin Adams by 3 sets to 2. World Champion Christian Kist also went out in the first round.

Characters The 2013 tournament promised a fresh winner and drew up some characters in the first round. There was a chap who had survived a heart attack 3 weeks previously and marvellously won his first round match and a 40 year old competitor who looked closer to 65. Plus the usual overweight, be-spectacled mob.

‘Scotty Dog’ Mitchell was that relieved he won in the first round (at the fourth attempt) that he wept at the end of his match. Apparently the boy had ‘Scotty Dog’ key rings for sale at last year’s tournament. Wonder if many were sold?

Dutchman, Jan Dekker, nicked a hard fought second round game 3-2 with Gary Thompson but then went down to Richie George son of Bobby George (runner-up in 1980 and 1994) as he hit double 8 to nick a 5-4 win.

Fellow Dutchman, Wesley Armes, powered through to the semi final with a win over Darryl ‘Dazler’ Fitton.

Favourite for the tournament, Scott Waites, (who had also won the Grand Slam of Darts in 2010 and reached the final in 09, marvellously beating Terry Jenkins in the semi after Jenkins had appeared to take him too lightly), was ‘too hotty’ for Paul Jennings, running out a comfortable 5-2 winner.

‘Richie Rich’ George ran out of steam against Waites in the semi-finals. ‘I don’t’ think Richie George keeps his arm straight enough when he throws,’ remarked an observer.

‘He seems to be throwing down. The other bloke has a better technique.’

In the second semi-final (which was not shown on live TV – disgusting) Tony O Shea beat Wesley Harmes 6-4 to ensure that the trophy, thankfully, remained in this country.

Scotty Too Hotty!

In the all England final, Waites raced into a 5 sets to 0 lead before O Shea pulled a set back. Waites, although brilliantly taking out 110 to win 7-1 at a canter, also had the ignominy of scoring the lowest 3 dart score of the week with a ‘7’ in the 7th set. Take nothing away from Scott Waites though, an impressive win and no one really gave him any problems.

Apart from beating O Shea up in the final, he also beat the Dutch up in earlier rounds.

By Steve Billingham SNOOKER: THE MASTERS The Jesta from Lesta Had the Last Laugh The tournament took place at the Alexandra Palace in London between January 13th and 20th. Leading up to the tournament I felt that it would be won by 1 of 4 players – Judd Trump, Mark Selby, Neil Robertson or Ali Carter.

Reigning champion Robertson didn’t have the easiest of openers against Ding Junhui. It all started brightly enough, Robertson racing into a 2-0 lead. The table hadn’t settled and Ding went 5-3 up. Robertson, however, levelled up and then won the decider with a 90 break.

The match between Stephen Maguire and Graeme Dott was comparable to watching a tin of paint dry. Dott seemed to take about 6 hours to make a break of 34 in frame 6. As expected, the match finished late, Maguire fought back but after a cagey nip and tuck last frame Dott edged over 6-5 with a cross double/fluke on the green.

Barry Hawkins was 2 balls away from victory, missing a relatively easy blue but a century by Judd Trump in the last frame saw him edge over 6-5.

The ball stopped running as Stuart Bingham was eliminated.

Bingham, 5-1 up on Mark Selby, started twitching shots and Selby did another Whodini act, ‘hoovering’ the frames up to nick it 6-5.

Judd Trump looked out of sorts and appeared to show Graeme Dott too much respect as he was trounced 6-1 in the quarter finals.

Dott’s semi final match with Mark Selby included 2 black ball frames in the first 6. Selby was 2-4 down in a match full of cagey safety play but he battled back to 4-4. He then missed an easy brown to edge in front which resulted in Dott winning the frame on a re-spotted black. A break of 80+ levelled it at 5-5 then he took the next frame and won the match to set up a final clash with Neil Robertson.

The first session ended with Selby leading 5-3 but it might have been more. A great clipped red down the bottom rail in frame 6 was one of the shots of the tournament. Selby then hoovered 3 frames up to storm into an 8-3 lead but Robertson then replied with 3 on the bounce to reduce the arrears to 6-8. A cat and mouse 15th frame was won by Selby and a delicate red in off the cushion started a run of points in the final frame. A spectacular double on the pink and Mark Selby was a 10-6 winner and Masters champion for the third time.

This follows a triumph by the same score line against Shaun Murphy in the UK Championships in December.

Inspirational Art Margit Björklund from Sweden, Don Widdall from England and Sinikka Ahokas-Gröhn, the well known Finnish artist, have been joined by Gunn Jonsson Shabeti for their latest exhibition. Margit expresses her feelings through oil paint into colours and images, Don mostly works with watercolours and pastels whilst Sinikka expresses her creativity by painting on silk and produces beautiful, shimmering colours. Gunn, a fashion textile print designer, works in mixed media and has produced some topical images for the winter season.

General “I Speak English” – Volunteers Wanted The Programme set up called “I Speak English” by the Mijas Foreigners Department at local schools and high schools is helping Mijas children with their English language. Foreign residents volunteer to go and speak to the school children on weekly bases. “The programme has been running for a few years and is very successful” stated Ana Skou head of the Mijas Foreigners Department. “Our volunteers are very happy to

KEY PETS Caterpillars (Processional Pine Caterpillars) Pine Caterpillars (Latin name thaumetopoea pityocampa) are probably one of the most unpleasant creatures you will find in Spain, certainly in areas where pine trees grow in abundance. They are found throughout the warmer regions of Southern Europe, the Near East and North Africa. As well as causing much damage to pine forests, they are a major danger to animals and, to a lesser degree, human beings.

Do not touch them. Warn your children that they are not like the friendly English caterpillars. The very fine hairs on these creatures are poisonous and most dangerous. They can be seen living in silk cocoon style nests hanging in the pine trees to which they are most harmful, stripping them of their pine needles. When hungry, they leave their cocoon to seek another un-infested tree on which to feed. They travel nose to tail in a line, hence the name Processional. They are most noticeable from January to mid April and are at their most dangerous in mid/late February. The caterpillars are often seen in the evenings, walking in procession from tree to tree.

If they drop onto you or your pet, don’t brush them off with your hands because the effect is most unpleasant, causing great irritation, rash and pain. Dogs, cats and people can suffer from shock. The hairs of the caterpillars are still virulent even when the creatures are dead. Do not hit them with sticks because hairs flying in the air are just as dangerous.

Burn them, but be careful of floating hairs. If the caterpillars are in the tree cocoon state, first spray the nest with hair spray (to seal down the hairs), cover the cocoon and the

affected part of the branch with a plastic bag, cut down the branch, place it on clear ground and burn it.

If the caterpillars are on the ground marching, it is better first to spray them with lighter fuel and then set them alight.

This reduces the risk of flying hairs. Take care to only do this where you cannot inadvertently start a forest fire because during the summer months the undergrowth and trees are very dry (any you may also need permission first from the Local Authority).

If you live near pine trees, it is recommended that you keep Anti Histamine tablets handy as an early treatment. In particular, avoid ingesting the hairs. Dogs are most at risk by sniffing the ground where the caterpillars have marched.

Take particular care with your eyes. If affected the result is serious, causing pain and swelling similar to a bad case of conjunctivitis.

Treatment: If a person or animal shows signs of shock, get them to a doctor, hospital or vet. immediately.

If you have children and are considering buying property, take the above details into consideration.

Golfing. When these caterpillars march across golf courses, play ceases immediately because it is too hazardous to try to clear them away.

KEY PETS Pedigree v Rescue Dog Because we are active in both fields, we often get abused by members of the public through networking sites. We feel this is a terrible shame. Yes, this seems to be a “new” thing here in Spain but it is a very accepted thing in the UK and America, with many experts in certain breeds of dogs breeding, rescuing and re-homing dogs of the breed they specialise in. These people are often very passionate about the breed they work with. Being at the top of their field, they often have a huge fan base with great connections in that dog breed world. Rescue centres are happy to call these people and ask for help when they take in a certain breed knowing that being experts, they are best to take on the dog and access and re-home it.

So you choose you want a French bulldog. Wouldn’t it be nice to have the choice to rescue or buy? Yes, in an ideal world everybody would rescue a dog, but sadly this will never happen. There will always be people that want pedigree dogs. If you do choose to buy a pedigree pup, then it’s your choice to do the right thing and go to a legal breeder and not feel sorry for that pup in the pet shop, fuelling the horrible puppy trade which is still very active all over the world. As breeders, we are proud of every dog we bring into the world and aren’t ashamed of what we do, which is why we welcome you into our homes and lives. Should you buy a dog from us, we hope our friendship will last a lifetime, as good breeders will always be there for you. Sadly we do get French bulldogs that have been dumped or abused, but 99% of the dogs we have rescued have had health issues or social issues. That cheap pup you brought from a pet shop or out the paper looked perfect when you brought it, but six months later it’s got health issues due to bad breeding, incorrect worming, or worse still - bad social skills, meaning

Having rescued 5 Frenchies last year, we are sad to say all had major issues; 3 had active leishmaniasis, a huge problem here in Spain, 1 had genetic breathing problems and was deaf and the other had no social skills with people and other dogs, so all of these dogs need special people prepared to take them and work with them, but not everybody should or would be able to take on such dogs.

Take Mary, rescued by FAMA and brought to us 2 days after Christmas last year. Mary was from a puppy farm, bred within an inch of her life with active leishmaniasis. It was very obvious that she had been feeding pups (which were most probably sold to pet shops) as she still had milk. This poor girl could hardly walk and was scared of day light so we guessed she had spent her life in a pen. She had a mouth full of rotten teeth where she had been fed a poor diet, but the worst part was her fear of people. With some hard work from my son and the vet’s action she slowly got better. 6 months later we paid for her to be spayed and have some dental work and she is like a new dog. However she was never re-homed as she stole our hearts and is now part of our family! So if you can offer a rescue dog a home then the rewards are great. If you feel you want a pup then choose wisely, and never forget you, the public, really can make a difference to dog abuse, be it by rescuing or using only reputable breeders.

It is not before time that countries throughout Europe are starting to get to grips with the fact that they can no longer afford to allow unscrupulous breeders and owners who have dogs they no longer want, turn these animals out on the street to fend for themselves or be taken into some shelter in the hope that they may be re-homed. It now appears that most European countries are moving to a mandatory microchip and license system for all dogs. Even this system is not full proof so long as you have vets who ignore the laws and give dogs annual injections whether these animals are chipped or not. I say this as many years ago we bought a quality puppy from Germany costing very much.

We kept this pup at home until he was 10 months old only to find two weeks after he was stolen from the kennel. The dog was micro-chipped and registered in the Spanish system, reported as stolen through the European Veterinary system and reported to the Police but has never been located. So this means either the dog has never visited a vet, or has been locked away in some puppy farm and used for breeding. Dog Fighting is a growing business in Spain and many of these young so-called stray dogs are collected by gangs and used as bait for the production of killing machines. I would rather see strays kept for a stipulated period and, if not claimed or re-homed, then destroyed rather than be subjected to a horrible death to educate another dog to become a killer. Only last week we had a gypsy arrive outside our home blowing his horn and demanding we must breed his bitch which he stated he would bring the next morning at 9am.

He had been drinking and/or probably taking drugs, became very abusive when he was told we would not breed his dog, but eventually got the message and left. We learned very quickly in our breeding programme that people see your dogs winning in the

shows and suddenly get the idea that they will breed some dog without registration then make a killing on the back of your dog’s name. Breeding dogs, when done properly and you comply with all the rules and regulations, is a hard game and I can assure you it is not a big cash generation programme; in addition it is a lot of hard work.

KEY LAW Another Legal Problem Regarding Collection of Outstanding Community Fees

In addition to all the problems we already have to face in order to get the outstanding community fees from debtors, as well as the long delays we have to suffer as a conse-

quence of ridiculous legal procedures and the Court’s collapse, we now have yet another legal problem to face.

From 19th December 2012, a new Law has been passed in that all claims presented to Court for an amount in excess of 2,000 Euros will be subject to a Government fee. The amount to be paid is 100 Euros per claim plus 0.5% of the amount owed.

This problem will specially apply to communities in which the total outstanding fees approved in the annual general meeting are higher than 2,000 Euros (this means more than 500 Euros per quarter), because the claim for the whole year would be higher than 2,000 Euros, so the community would have to pay these fees for every owner in arrears.

Should the community have several debtors in this situation, you can imagine the problem. In fact it is a vicious circle: “You do not have money because you have many debtors, but you cannot claim the debts because you have no funds to pay the fees”.

In my opinion this is absolutely unfair, but I believe a solution would be to hold an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) half way through the year to approve the debts up to this point in time, so that every claim would be less that 2,000 Euros and you could then avoid the payment of these fees.

This means that the community will have to make two annual claims instead of one, and none of them will be subject to the payment of these new fees.

Taking this into consideration, please think in advance about the problem and take legal advice.

The world’s big decision makers are to meet later this month for their annual get-together in Davos. They will have plenty to think about particularly as the World Economic Forum has expressed concerns on the risks facing the global economy.

The eurozone has restored an element of confidence in its currency and The ECB decided to hold rates for the time being. No further support was provided however there is a view in the market that The ECB could reduce rates next month should help be needed. The eurozone does still provide a lot of headlines not least of late Cyprus who requires 17billion euros, just a small drop in the ocean between friends. Pressure however is building in Nicosia as Moody’s have slashed its rating by 3 notches to Caa3 just above outright default. In France Mr Hollande is suffering as a flight of capital in October and November coincided with the string of tax rises also saw a collapse in French business. With youth unemployment rising above the 27% level, the question is, are bigger problems just around the corner? On a positive note however bond markets in Italy and Spain are easing

With nearly 200 fines in 2012 for violating various provisions of the data protection legislation, Telefónica is the company most fined in 2012 but also the company that has managed to gain a contract of nearly 2 million Euros in a public tender for the Spanish Agency for Data Protection, in which, among other things, Telefónica will offer a storage solution and data security for the Spanish.

any other company for violating the Law on Data Protection (LOPD). Telefónica Móviles of Spain accumulated nearly 120 disciplinary proceedings, resulting in 180 fines worth over 7 million Euros. Likewise, Telefónica has received 17 fines totalling nearly half a million Euros. Virtually every 3 days a new proceeding against Telefónica is opened for violating fundamental rights to data protection.

On January 15, 2013 the Boletin Oficial del Estado published the Resolution of the Spanish Agency for Data Protection announcing the formation of the contract for voice communications services (fixed and mobile) and data, network management, security, outsourcing of housing systems and electronic services provided by the Spanish Agency for Data Protection, to run for four years.

The institution that offers up a particular contract for bidding should require that eligible candidates are capable of ensuring a high quality of guardianship of the purpose and objectives of the Spanish Agency for Data Protection, providing a positive addition to the obligations for environmental and occupational risk prevention. A candidate must have an immaculate record of legal compliance and respect for the fundamental rights as embodied in the Data protection Act.

Spain’s Telefónica SA and Telefónica Móviles SA bid to achieve the highest score, as assessed against the tender documents. A note on page 12 states that ‘...candidates must have different obligations on taxation, environmental protection, employment protection, working conditions and occupational safety...’, but says nothing about protection of personal data.

The company is judged to be the most appropriate to clinch a deal with the Spanish Data Protection Agency Data, even though Telefónica has received more penalties in 2012 than

Cafeteria Los Olivos is one of the most spotless restaurants in the area. There is a large terrace and spacious air conditioned interior with plenty of room between tables, free wifi and an enormous car park which also makes Cafeteria Los Olivos an ideal place for an informal business meeting. Cerveceria Tipi Tapa is a fine example of a typically Spanish bar/restaurant, but of excellent quality at affordable prices. Tipi Tapa can be found at the Miramar end of Mijas Costa – come off at the first entrance to Fuengirola past the Sohail Castle. You will find the Mosque on your right and a few metres past that there is a roundabout with the Cayetano supermarket on it. Take a left there into C/Malaga and you will find Cerveceria Tipi Tapa a few metres down the road on the right. Cerveceria Tipi Tapa has a selection of fine meats from the BBQ all served with potatoes and salad, such as Mixed Grill for two people, other fine cuts of steak, pork or various meat skewers, a selection of fish etc. As the name of the restaurant suggests, it also serves a full range of the ever popular Spanish “tapas”, small portions either for a snack or to pick and mix with your friends. Tapas are served all day so Tipi Tapa is also an ideal place to eat if you are a little outside normal dining hours. A selection from the tapas menu includes favourites such as Russian Salad and other salad variations, a good variety of “embutidos”, different types of Spanish sausage, hams and Salamis from around the country, prawn and fish dishes, meatballs, croquettes, several vegetarian options such as Tortilla, Caramelised Goat’s Cheese with Crispy Almonds, Brie Blini with Cranberry Jam, Aubergine with Cane Sugar and many, many more both for meat and fish lovers and vegetarians too. Tipi Tapa is an ideal place to try Spanish favourites. We have now had the pleasure of visiting Cerveceria Tipi Tapa and have tried first hand some of the tapas mentioned above. We were warmly

greeted, the service is outstanding but the food even more so. Everything comes beautifully presented and is of the highest quality such as the “Cinco Jotas” award winning ham which was the best we have had in a long time. Cerveceria Tipi Tapa serves the best quality Beef from Galicia which is renowned for its outstanding flavour. We have been able to sample this which was included on the Menu of the Day and I can confirm that the quality was indeed outstanding. Cravings is now well established in their front-line premises near Barclays Bank in Nueva Andalucia so you can enjoy Cravings most delicious deli and Greek food in spacious comfort or on their large terrace as well as breakfast if you are an early bird. On the menu Hot Salt Beef (the picture in the ad was taken at Cravings on a recent visit) either with Latkes or in a sandwich (great flavour and generous portion), New Green Cucumber, Various Salads including Coleslaw, Fish Balls (THE BEST), Chicken Soup, Chopped Liver etc. If available, do have a plateful of the delicious Bean and Barley Soup. Cravings also offer a Greek menu to include Kleftico, Houmous, Taramasalata, Mousaka, Salads. For dessert try either the Cheese Cake, the renowned Apple Strudel or Lockshen Pudding. To take the pain out of entertaining at home, Cravings specialise in take away.

Cravings is really worth a visit. You will be pleased to know that Cravings is now open daytimes including Sundays when roast dinner is also on the menu. NEW at Cravings, three course Greek menu of the day for only 10 euros. This is superb value. Choose starters from Houmous, Tsaziki, Taramasalata all home-made and freshly prepared served with pitta bread. We really enjoyed the Lamb Kebab which was absolutely delicious, taken from the choice cut of the leg and slowly grilled until tender and tasty. Mousakka was also tried and tested as well as Dolmades. For dessert we had a great portion of home-made Baklava. It was not overly sweet. Cannot believe that the three course menu was only 10 Euros. Terrific value for money. Of course we

have visited more than once!!! There is something for all tastes at Cravings. Cravings is open from 8.00 a.m. until 9.00 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday and Mondays until 18.00.

Darts at Smile is at the Castle end of the Paseo in Fuengirola and is now open every day from 5.00 pm. A wonderful venue if you are just popping in for a drink but as the name suggests, it is the only dedicated darts venue on the Costa del Sol. Fellini’s, the well-known Italian Restaurant at the Aztec Country Club in Riviera del Sol, has been a favourite haunt for many years. The emphasis is on a friendly, family service with reasonable prices but retaining a high standard of cuisine. Fellini’s has an extensive Italian menu of family favourites such as pastas, pizzas, meat and seafood dishes cooked to perfection all of which is available as take away as well. Our particular favourites from the extensive menu are Minestrone Soup, Antipasto or Spaghetti Pil Pil for starters, Vegetable Risotto, Veal Milanese or any of the delicious pastas or pizzas for main course to name but a few. I am also rather partial to the Veal Saltimbocca. We are now also hooked on Fellini’s Pizzas which are authentic, thin and crispy and we believe the best in the area. Japanese Restaurant Ginza can be found in Jardin Botanico, La Cala. Japanese Restaurant Ginza has been decorated to a high standard and offers a wide range of authentic Japanese food to include Sushi and Sashimi plus much more in its sophisticated surrounds. The highlight of eating at Ginza is the Teppanyaki show where exotic food using the best quality ingredients is masterfully prepared on a hot steel plate right in the middle of the table and the chef will show you the unforgettable cooking display called “Teppanyaki”. Pepper pots etc are expertly thrown in the air and you must watch the trick with the eggs. Try to catch a bit of the omelette in your mouth when cooked! Meze unbeatable with many dishes to include humus, kibbe, stuffed vine leaves, tabouleh, falafel, arayes, and many, many more, all delicious and really fresh and this is just for starters. We can’t normally manage anything else but if you still have room, please try Kharouf Mashwi, which is lamb with rice, almonds and pine nuts, simply delicious! Ssalathai Many of you will know that we have a soft spot for Thailand having visited many times and therefore know good Thai food when we find it. Jack, one of the owners is Thai as is the chef, so you can be sure that the food at Ssalathai is authentic. You will find Ssalathai Thai Restaurant at Urb Playa Marina, Mijas Costa. If you are not familiar with Thai food, then I would suggest on your first visit that you try the special menu for two people at only 50 Euros which will give you a good selection across the board to sample this exotic cuisine. The special menu includes assorted starters followed

by Tom Yam Koong, Thai’s favourite soup with Spicy Prawns.

Main courses include Stir Fried Fish with Chilli Sauce and Basil Leaves, Chicken Panang Curry, Seasonal Vegetables in Oyster Sauce, Steamed Rice and Dessert. From the a la carte menu starters also include Beef or Chicken Satay, Thai Spring Rolls, Thai Fish Cakes and Soups. Salads include two of my favourites, Thai Beef Salad and Glass Noodle Salad with Prawns and Chicken. For main course Chicken dishes include Green or Red, Penang or Yellow Curries, Stir Fry with Ginger and Chinese Mushrooms, Thai Sweet and Sour and Thai with Cashew Nuts (both dishes being different from the Chinese dishes and rate amongst my favourites), as well as Stir Fry with Chilli, Green Beans, Garlic and Basil Leaves. Pork dishes also include Sweet and Sour, Stir Fry with Chilli and Basil Leaves or with Vegetables and Soy Sauce. Amongst the beef dishes is the delicious Beef Massaman. There are also several Duck, Fish and Prawn dishes, a nice selection of vegetable, rice and noodle dishes, including an outstanding Pad Thai as well as a selection of Thai desserts. The menu indicates the fieriness of the dish so that you can choose what is suitable or simply ask for it spicy if you prefer it that way!

We asked Nick the secret of the continued success of Streets and he told us Streets is as good as it always was and serves typical London Pub Grub. Streets of London is open all day, every day from 12 until 12 for breakfast, lunch and dinner with a credit-crunch busting lunch at great value of only 5 Euros (changes daily)! Wednesday Nights we are loving Curry Night. Indian Starters include crispy Papadoms with home-made salads, chutney and relish, Tandoori Chicken, best ever Onion Bhajis and Sheik Kebab. There are four choices of curry for main course plus vegetarian and a selection of rice and naan bread.

This is a buffet so you can help yourself to as much as you want and all this for just 10 euros per person!!! We love the Sunday Roast. We had the whole three courses which were very reasonably priced, cooked to perfection and there was plenty of it. Service was also very attentive.

Main course includes a choice of five meats plus every trimming at only 9.50 per head. If you enjoy a good shoulder of lamb you will not be disappointed but please be sure to book it first! Steak night on Fridays is also tried and tested and comprises succulent Sirloin Steak plus all the extras and a glass of wine or beer for only 10 Euros. There is an attractive beer garden, pool table and Kid’s Play area with Bouncy Castle and now a separate terrace and restaurant for families. The restaurant itself faces the ocean and is fully air-conditioned. Food and service are as you would expect from a restaurant with several years experience under its belt. KEY RECIPE Mexican Tortillas with Pork Mince In this issue here’s something quick, easy and budget friendly.

Ingredients 450g lean pork mince 1 onion, finely chopped 1 chilli, chopped (plus seeds if you like it hot!)

1 dessertspoon fresh ginger, grated 1 red pepper, chopped Salt and pepper 1 can chopped tomatoes 1 pack of soft flour tortillas Salsa of your choice, creme fraiche and mixed salad leaves

Heat a non stick pan, brown the pork well.

Stir in the onion, garlic, chilli, ginger, red pepper and season well. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook for 8-10 minutes.

Heat the tortillas as instructed on the pack. Fill with the pork mixture. Serve with the salsa and a bowl of low fat crème fraiche.

There are many varieties of salsas available in the shops. If you feel like making one, our favourite to serve with the tortillas is Celery and Pepper: mix together 2 sticks of celery, finely chopped; 1 chopped red pepper, 2 tablespoons oil; 1 clove garlic, chopped; juice of ½ lemon and season with a little salt and pepper.

KEY FEATURE Salon Varietes Theatre

Salon Varietes Theatre is in C/Emancipacion, Fuengirola (off Church Square). To find it, stand with your back to the Church and it is about 50 metres along the pedestrian road on your left. Attached to the theatre is a bar which is a popular meeting point for long term and residential tourists. Salon Varietes is the only English Language Theatre in Spain, although other nationalities do use it, especially Danes. It started 27 years ago and has survived since then. It has played an important part in the community life, for instance special concerts provided the seed money to get Cudeca off the ground.

The social group of the theatre organises trips and short breaks in Spain at advantageous rates which longer term tourists often join. The theatre holds 300 people. The performers are all unpaid but often include professional singers and dancers working throughout Andalucia and Spain. The theatre has professional grade Lighting and Sound systems

and professional support staff. The programme is varied and usually there are two or three shows a month from September to June. Mostly the productions are musicals or musical revues and popular plays, comedies or mysteries. Some more serious work is done too.
