Welcome to the April issue of Key to Mijas Costa. This is my favourite time of year with my birthday, the weather is glorious, businesses have reopened and the fragrant smell of spring flowers is wafting into my office. We have been very busy in recent weeks and have as always a lot of new businesses to tell you about. We are often asked about properties to rent etc. Ultimate Estates in La Cala has actually got back to us when we have enquired so we would recommend them. With property prices at a more realistic level, overseas residents are once again buying to rent, which is good news for the economy. For more information see page 3. Racking your brains for something different to do with the kids? Take them to Kidz Kingdom for a fun day out. See page 11 for further information.

KEY BEAUTY Hair Extensions – What They Can Do For You?

By Tracy, Hair Magic

People always seem to think long hair is all that hair extensions can give you. This is so not the case. Tracy at Hair Magic has been specializing in hair extensions for over 25 years. Extensions can be used to colour and thicken your hair.

use EXTENSIONS for this. We can put as many different colours through your hair without causing any damage and the sun does not fade extensions hair as quickly as your own. This will cost probably less than a full set of highlights, from 50 Euros.

EXTENSIONS TO COLOUR If you want highlights but your hair is very dry, we can

EXTENSIONS FOR FULLNESS, VOLUME At HAIR MAGIC we do more extensions to give volume than any other. The great thing about this is you can have two extensions on each side or 40 on each side, depending on how thick you want it to look and how much you want to spend. You can wear your hair up and in any style with these EXTENSIONS and they are almost completely invisible. This can cost as little as 16 Euros (not including blow dry). EXTENSIONS FOR LENGTH If you have fine or thin hair, it is easier to extend than thick, course hair and it’s cheaper as you won’t need many extensions. If these are done correctly, for example not too much glue is used and they are put in with the correct tension, they absolutely won’t damage your hair. If anything, when they are taken out, you hair will be a little longer and in better condition than before as your own hair is being protected from the harsh sun. We have 5 methods, ‘silicone glue’, ‘plastic glue’, ‘ready bonded’, ‘clip-ins’ and the newest method, ‘micro rings’. The important thing is to choose the method that suits you and your hair. The cost for a full, long set of EXTENSIONS depends on the length and amount we put in so it can cost from 275 Euros (excluding cut and blow dry). If you need any advice about your hair in general, the colour, the cut or even a perm, please call us. Consultations are free.

KEY HEALTH Hallux Valgus: The Painful Bunion Deformity Initially it appears to be a simple cosmetic problem when the great toe starts to move towards the other toes of the foot. However, the bunion deformity very soon becomes extremely painful and during its further evolution it has an influence on the lesser toes and results in a painful complex forefoot deformity. At this stage the only solution for the patient is a surgical correction of the forefoot. The human foot is an impressive construction by nature. It consists of 26 bones, 33 joints, muscles, tendons and over 100 ligaments. We make an average of 15,000 steps per day with it. Our feet can absorb this tremendous impact only because the weight of our body is being distributed on a larger area with the help of muscles and the fat pad tissue on the sole of the foot. The construction of arches in the foot plays a key role in this process. The ankle joint connects the foot with the lower limb and has therefore an important influence on the static mechanism of the entire body. Any malposition in the foot area can have a negative effect on the pelvis and the posture of the spine.

14

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

Provided by Medilink

The sole of the foot also works as a sensitive organ of touch, provided by a large net of sensitive nerves. During every step it continuously sends information to our brain. The role that our foot plays in the function of our body is generally under estimated. Most of us only become aware of our feet after we begin to have problems with them. Any pain, limitation of movement, change of posture, skin characteristics or colour are signs of a disorder in the highly complex anatomical construction of the foot. The most frequent forefoot deformity is the bunion deformity, or in technical terms, Hallux Valgus. It requires a sensitive patient examination through a highly trained specialist to define in detail the cause and further consequences in the evolution of this deformity and the pain mechanism. A great part of pain caused by forefoot deformities can be positively influenced, or even completely treated, with the help of custom-made in-soles, change of footwear and correct physiotherapy. However, from a certain point on, especially when the lesser toes are already involved in the process of deformity, only surgery can offer a definite solution. Exclusively in the forefoot area over 130 surgical techniques are described! This shows the importance of this area and how frequently this deformity occurs amongst the population. In modern foot surgery we prefer surgical procedures that maintain the existing joints, if possible, and due to the unlimited variety of fore foot deformities, every patient has to be treated with an “a la carte surgery” to reconstruct the individual forefoot problem. The implant material preferred by Dr. med. Petr Spurek is titanium and at FSC Marbella we also have good experience with bioresorbable implants. Post-surgical treatment obviously depends on the performed surgical procedures but, in general, the bone healing process takes 6 weeks. During this period we allow our patients already partial weight bearing with the help of special shoes or orthotics. In our clinic we do not apply plaster any more, as we use only the latest more advanced material that has replaced it. Usually after 6 weeks normal gait with full weight bearing in comfortable shoes is allowed and full sports activities can be performed 3 months after surgery. This editorial was written by Dr. Spurek. “Foot & Sports Clinic Marbella” (led by Dr. Spurek himself) is a Preferred Partner of “medilink” offering a specialist service here on the Costa del Sol. For more information on “Foot & Sports Clinic Marbella” or any of our other Preferred Partners please call “medilink” on: 952 93 38 76.

KEY HEALTH What is Reiki?

By Pat Kaines

Reiki is the energy that surrounds us all. It is the energy that helps us to grow and to flourish. The word Reiki is made up of two Japanese words: ‘Rei’ means Universal and ‘Ki’ means Life Force Energy. Reiki has its roots in ancient Indian and Tibetan forms of healing. It is the name given to a system of natural healing which evolved in Japan from the experience and dedication of Dr. Mikao Usui. He was inspired to develop this form of healing from ancient scriptures after many years of study, research and meditation. How does Reiki work? During the Reiki healing session the client will either lie fully clothed on a massage table or be seated on a chair. The Reiki practitioner, who has been attuned to the Reiki energy, will then place his/her hands either directly on or just above various parts of the clients’ body for a few minutes at a time. This enables the energy to flow through the body, clearing blockages along the way and going where the healing is needed most. A full treatment normally takes one hour.

16

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

Often the Reiki energy is described as being felt as hot, cold, heavy, butterflies or even as a sharp stab. Sometimes the client feels nothing at all, but that does not mean that the energy is not flowing. It is possible to heal at all levels: physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. Acute injuries can be helped to heal quickly but more chronic illness takes longer. Even in terminal illness, there is usually great benefit to be gained and an enhancement of the quality of life, giving a sense of peace and acceptance during the time remaining. Please note that Reiki is not an alternative to allopathic medicine but can be used safely in conjunction. You cannot ‘overdose’ on Reiki. The body will take on board only as much as it needs at that particular time. Patricia is a Reiki Master practitioner and has been attuned and trained in Usui Shiki Ryoho (advanced level). For more information or to make an appointment please call Patricia at Clinica Medicare in La Cala de Mijas. Tel: 952 835 776 or directly on 666 170 868.

KEY HEALTH Sea Buckthorn Oil – Omega 7 What is sea buckthorn oil? Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is a berry bush found in Asia and Europe. The berry has been used in traditional Asian medicine for more than one thousand years. In the past few decades, scientist from the University of Turku, Finland have carried out extensive research into sea buckthorn which has resulted in an improved understanding of the health effects the berry has to offer. Sea buckthorn oil is rich in beta carotene, vitamins and omegas 3, 6, 7 & 9. Why take Omega 7(R)? Dry eyes? Dry mouth? Intimate dryness? Modern research has found that sea buckthorn oil is an important source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (particular omega 7). Polyunsaturated fatty acids are important structural components of mucous membranes, which form the protective lubricating lining of internal organs such as vaginal, digestive and respiratory tracts, as well as the surface of the eyes and mouth. Mucous membranes may become dry as a result of ageing or environmental factors. Sea buckthorn oil may therefore help to maintain healthy mucous membranes, as a source of nutrients required to maintain their structure and function. Linda loves Omega 7 “It has been life changing for me, I no longer need my eye drops and Omega 7 benefits so many other areas of the body that is a must in my daily routine” Q How did you discover Omega 7? A I wanted natural help for my dry eyes, which have plagued me for about 10 years. I was tired of using drops and feeling uncomfortable. I found out that other people with my problem us sea buckthorn oil to provide moisture from the inside. Q Tell us more about your problem. A My eyes felt dry and gritty most days, and also they would become red and sore. It would flare up when I was under artificial lighting, in air conditioned rooms or when I wore false eyelashes. It also seemed to worsen after I had my two children. I was forced to use eye drops every single morning. If I ever forgot my drops, my eyes would be terrible all day and people would think I’d been crying! Q How has Omega 7 helped you? A No more eye drops and no more discomfort! With the TV and photographic work I do, it’s important that my eyes look clear and healthy. Omega 7 has helped me achieve that.

By Anni’s Vital Shop

Q How long did it take to work for you? A I took two capsules in the morning and two at night and I started to see an improvement in a fortnight. After a few more weeks I was able to stop using my eye drops. Q Do you recommend it to others? A Absolutely! It has been life changing for me. Sea buckthorn benefits so many other areas of the body that it is now a must in my daily routine. Pharma Nord’s Omega 7 is made to such high standards that I know my health is in good hands. Linda Lusardi has been a household name in the UK for many years. She is a model, TV presenter and actress. Linda is married to actor Same Kane and has two children. 100% natural. Totally unique. KEY HEALTH What is Toothache?

By Chris Weir, Sonrisa

Toothache is pain around the teeth and jaws as a result of a dental condition. Causes: 1. Dental Cavity 2. Exposed Pulp 3. Gum Disease 4. Cracked Tooth 5. Jaw Pain from the Temporo Mandibular joint. Other causes which may result in dental pain are: 1. Earache 2. Sinusitis 3. Angina Toothache can vary from a mild ache to sharp pain, throbbing pain and severe pain. When it’s most severe pain and pain relievers don’t stop the pain, a quick visit to the dentist is the only answer. Many patients will try anything to avoid going to the dentist, such as strong pain relievers and antibiotics, but they don’t treat the cause of the pain only the symptoms, and they will still have to go to the dentist to get treatment, but the sooner you go, the better the chances of saving the tooth. Dental causes: Cavities, broken teeth, abscesses, cracked tooth,

20

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

gum disease, receding gums and impacted wisdom teeth. Small cavities can be treated simply with a filling. Deeper cavities may have exposed the pulp and will need root canal treatment or extraction. Abscesses will need antibiotics and possibly extraction. The cracked tooth will have a hairline crack which will be painful when biting hard and sensitive to hot and cold. This may require root canal treatment and a crown. Receding gums cause exposed root surface which is sensitive to hot, cold and acidic foods. This can normally be treated with topical fluoride gels, sensitive toothpastes and sensitive mouthwashes. The impacted, erupting wisdom tooth can cause pain, swelling and infection. This can be treated with pain relievers, antibiotics and possibly extraction. The jaw joint (the TMJ) can cause dental pain, and this can be due to an injury to the jaw, arthritis, grinding (bruxism) or stress. This can be treated with anti inflammatory tablets such as Nurofen, heat treatment to the joint, a bite guard and avoiding eating hard foods. How to avoid toothache: 1. Keep your teeth and gums healthy. 2. Reduce intake of sugary foods and drinks. 3. Brush your teeth twice a day. 4. VISIT YOUR DENTIST.

KEY HEALTH Biceps Tendonitis, one of the

many causes of Frozen Shoulder The biceps muscle is in the front of your upper arm (the one you see when Popeye has had his spinach!). It helps you bend/flex your elbow and rotate your lower arm. It also helps keep your shoulder stable. Muscles narrow at both ends to become tendons, (like strong cords) and it’s the tendons that connect to bone. The biceps muscle is connected by its tendons at both the shoulder and elbow joints. At the shoulder joint, there are actually two tendons that connect the biceps to bone, which is why the muscle is called the biceps: bi, meaning “two”, so it has 2 attachments at the shoulder, one called the “long head” of the biceps, the other the “short head” of the biceps (see diag.1). Most problems are of the long head of the biceps, which

22

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

By Chris Howard

causes pain and/or weakness down the front of the arm near the top of the shoulder; usually with a sharp pain on lifting the arm, sometimes accompanied with a snapping sound or clicking sensation. In most cases, damage to the biceps tendon is due to a lifetime of repeat activities. As we age, our tendons slowly weaken with everyday wear and tear. This degeneration can be worsened by overuse - repeating the same shoulder motions again and again is nearly always the culprit of biceps-related pain in the shoulder mostly because the tendon runs along a groove or “valley” in the arm bone (where it can become easily inflamed) and can also come under stress from nearby rotator cuff muscles. In my opinion, most of this damage/inflammation is caused because of other muscle imbalance around the shoulder, especially the pectorals (see diag 2) which are often over tight and shortened mainly because of the amount of time we spend bringing our hands in towards the centre of our bodies with varying degrees of force and repetition, i.e. driving, cooking, cleaning, reading, using the computer, playing tennis or padel, swimming and especially using mobile phones! All these things and more can rotate your upper arm inwards far enough to easily cause friction along the sides of the groove where the biceps tendon runs, altering its normal tracking, thus causing inflammation and pain. So other over-tight muscles are often to blame and it’s the cause of this imbalance which I aim to put right with corrective physical treatment, which may include your neck and upper back or even changes to postural tension from your hips and legs. Untreated over time, this friction can lead to the development of micro or macro damage to the tendon, including tears. I don’t treat all biceps tendon problems the same way. Often the first thing is to rest the arm as much as possible, I give advice on changing the activity causing the problem ie. use higher pillows, hold your phone differently, change your work position/habits etc., how to use ice and anti-inflammatory medications, then these are combined with physical therapy to loosen and rebalance the other muscles which are often the cause of the original problem, and then some shoulder exercises to strengthen and avoid repeat episodes. (If necessary I may recommend corticosteroid injections or in extreme cases surgical treatment if the tendon is subluxed (loose) or dislocated ( has come out of its groove.) and would then advise on rehabilitation..

KEY HEALTH The Benefits of Massage

By Michael Izon, Horizon Therapies

There are a number of benefits of massage including: - The patient’s circulation can be improved. - The massage can induce a soothing feeling as the nervous system responds better than any other body system to massage. - By stimulating the flow of lymph towards the lymph glands, a massage can help eliminate waste and toxic products.

24

KEY FEATURE Tea at Sam’s

By Sue Cross

Robotically, she dressed in her best trouser suit and studied her reflection in the mirror. She knew that she had good dress sense – hadn’t she been told innumerable times by colleagues at work when she was a fashion buyer? What had she done to drive him to another woman? She took a taxi to the heart of the city where James’s office was situated. The normality of the city’s activities affronted her as she watched cyclists, shoppers, young mothers with prams and business people going about their daily routine. A brass band played on a street corner and Celine felt as if it were mocking her. How could life go on like this? She paid the taxi driver and ventured into the tall, modern block that housed his office. It was a long shot but worth a try. Feeling strangely empowered, she strode out of the lift on the eighth floor. She had planned what to say to the young blonde receptionist but the desk was empty and so she walked straight into his office, not knowing what she would say to him if he was there. Good, the office was empty. She had to act quickly. Nothing in his desk drawers. Except a bottle of Aramis. ‘What the heck? He hates aftershave!’ She thought in fury, now convinced there was another woman. Her hands shook slightly as she moved with rapidity, opening the tall filing cabinet. The third file she opened held the evidence that she had been looking for. Holding her breath, she withdrew a package that was bundled together with an elastic band. The photographs, about a dozen in all, showed a young, attractive girl with olive skin and slanting eyes. There were poses of her standing outside what looked like a club or café and the rest were taken in her apartment. There was one on the small balcony that led off the sitting room and others sitting on the sofa in the living room. There was even a picture of her holding Celine’s Persian cat. She was drawn to the girl’s hair. It was dark, long and curly. Feeling a mixture of disbelief and triumph that her plan had born

fruit, she stared at the pictures for what seemed an eternity until she heard a noise in the corridor. Jumping, she knew she had to escape before she was discovered. Enraged that this stranger should be usurping her in her own home, she rammed the pictures into her large leather handbag and headed for home. She would confront him tonight. “Good morning Mrs Smedley, are you looking for your husband?” the receptionist was back at her post. “Er, it’s all right. I’ve sorted out what I came here for,” Celine sounded composed as she walked to the lift, thankful that the doors opened as soon as she pressed the button. Once home Celine looked at the photos, this time checking every detail. She studied the one taken outside the bar. The girl was wearing a tight fitting black top and short skirt and was smiling into the camera. Celine could just decipher the name of the bar – Virgo. The irony did not escape her as she wracked her brain trying to remember where she had seen the sign before. Then, before hiding the evidence, she carefully lifted the long black hair from the dressing table and placed it in an envelope with the pictures. For some reason that was beyond her she cooked a chicken casserole for him and put a bottle of white wine to chill in the fridge. Self pity was beginning to engulf her like a choking smog, replacing the fury and disappointment that had at first bombarded her. She had always trusted her husband and thought that they had a good, solid marriage. They didn’t even argue very much as she let James get his own way. He was a bit of a sulker and Celine hated the heavy atmosphere and silence that a row produced. Perhaps she wanted to prove to him what a stupid move he’d made cheating on such a devoted wife who looked after her appearance, was affectionate, kept an organised home and prepared delicious meals. Why else would she go to all this trouble cooking for him?

KEY FEATURE Dario Meets Bettina Huggino, a Lady of Andalucia I first met Bettina Huggino in the mid nineties when I was dinning with some friends in a simple but delightful Spanish venta (a type of restaurant typical of this part of Andalucia), situated in a gentle valley near the small bustling town of Alhaurin El Grande high in the hills between Fuengirola and Marbella. Today it is still a popular meeting place for the local farmers, builders and artisans and the other nationals living in and around the area. On Sundays the place is heaving with the noisy crowds of excited Spanish families, who like to gather in the venta and relax with their friends and families, enjoying themselves, devouring delicious helpings of paella and drinking good bottles of Rioja, with gusto. The noise level grows with impatient intensity in parallel harmony with the pleasure of the company and experience shared. Numerous little children run in and around the tables pulling the ears of yelping dogs and chasing nervous cats, totally oblivious of all and sundry, but carefully scrutinised by devoted and indulgent grandparents while the waiters weave in and out between them with consummate skill. I watched the scenes unfolding in front of my eyes with a detached enchantment and I was reminded of Fellini’s evocative film “Amacord”. The furniture in the venta is of a simple type and the décor is quite ordinary except for one constituent. The walls were then covered with many beautiful and colourful paintings depicting rural scenes of Spain that sadly are fast disappearing from the traditional rural environment of Andalucia. The paintings appeared simple at first glance, but it was not long before my fascinated eyes were dragged to the named encrypted on each work; Bettina Huggino. I was idly chatting to a man sitting next to me who I later discovered was Bettina’s hard working husband Felipe (Philip). We were formally introduced and to my surprise, was enlightened that the creator of the unusual paintings hanging on the venta walls were the works of Bettina Huggino, a charming lady sitting in front of me. I asked her to explain the Spanish sounding name Huggino; laughingly she told me her real name is “Huggins” and very English, but her Spanish friends nick–named her Huggino, which they all preferred and this has stuck. She was a blonde; her long, flowing hair tucked up high in the classical style; with grey blue eyes to match; a gentlewoman with a kind, but steely character, who carried the comfortable persona of a lady who lives securely within her own world, and who is the mistress of that mysterious place, the inner soul. She reminded me of one of those courageous English la-

dies, that at the height of the British Empire, confidently travelled and lived in the most obscure and remote places of the globe, oblivious of hardships, dangers or inconveniences to themselves, seemingly protected by a spiritual charm. She lived in a small finca, within walking distance of the venta with views from her home that were stunning, looking upon the mountain where Ibex still roam, her garden filled with an intoxicating variety of fruit trees and flowers. Her life was simple, having no telephone, computers, or running water (from a well) and electricity from a generator that kept her husband busy with maintenance. I had an immediate rapport with them both, as they were a down to earth and natural couple, modest and devoid of any pretentiousness. In her studio I saw many of her paintings, which she explained are known as El Arte Naif, (naive art) and her style was simple but direct using brilliant colours as bright as the Spanish sun. With her fertile imagination, Bettina depicted scenes from everyday events of rural life in Andalucia, which she observed during her many years living in this region, capturing on canvass particular customs and details which sadly will not always be with us, as the Spanish people race headlong into the modern commercial jungle, embracing the inevitable lack of spirituality it brings with it. She was totally absorbed in her work and when creating, she painted from morning till dusk not aware of how hot or how cold it became. Bettina exhibited her paintings in Lucena, Granada, Seville and Marbella just to mention a few cities, where she delighted art lovers explaining to me that she sold mostly to Spaniards from all over Spain who delight in her depiction of their rapidly vanishing way of life, which pleased her, as she is a real Devonian and not Spanish. I gently reminded her that another pair of great English artists Delius and Elgar, were ignored and misunderstood by their own countrymen, their talents only discovered and understood by the French and Germans. She politely smiled, her natural modesty and reserve keeping her down to the Spanish earth from where her inspiration was derived. Bettina Huggino sadly is no longer with us, but her art and vision has much to offer the art-loving public and I’m sure that it won’t be long before the wider world, sees her work and hears her name in a similar breath as her fellow countryman, Lowry, as her paintings are a valuable source of recorded history and memory for a future generation. A simple but beautifully expressed reminder of the humanity of Spanish life that we all love.

KEY ASTROLOGY Astrology4Everyone In the last few issues I’ve posted articles about the personal planets, what they mean and the effects they can have on us as individuals. Some of you may be well acquainted with astrology but for those new to the subject, and maybe for the not so new, this month’s article is a brief description of what astrology is, where it came from and to some extent how it works! For now let me take you on a fascinating journey that has brought Astrology full circle… as a science in the practical sense and how it provides us with a means of self-discovery… finding out what makes us tick, and what doesn’t! There’s a lot more to it of course, but one step at a time… ‘To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven’… So what is astrology and how does it work? What do those peculiar symbols and signs mean in a natal birth chart, also known as a horoscope? The answers are there if we want to dig a bit deeper and learn more about this intriguing subject. Watching the sky has been a part of man’s life for thousands of years and in ancient times seasonal changes were marked by the longest and shortest days (solstices) and the times when night and day were the same length (equinoxes) and these became a calendar for hunting and planting. The people of that era noted the position of the Sun and Moon when heavenly phenomena occurred (what we know as solar and lunar eclipses) and how these coincided with significant events on earth. They were considered omens and eventually turned into myths and fables which told about gods, demons and heroes; a complex hierarchy of celestial beings who watched, judged and manipulated the lives of men! For centuries Astrology has been the means of revealing the potential of an individual by drawing up a birth chart using the date, place and time of birth. Early astrologers grouped the stars into patterns that we know as Constellations; the sky was divided into twelve segments, the twelve signs of the Zodiac starting with the Constellation of Aries. The ‘stars’ or planets eventually acquired ‘personalities’ and ‘mythologies’ of their own, and astrologers began to attach significance to the position of these planets against certain constellations. This mapping out took mathematicians of the time months to perform by hand but with current technology we can calculate the positions of planets in signs and houses in a few min-

utes on the computer! Perhaps not so well known is the fact that Astrology and Astronomy were once considered part of a single discipline and astrologers were among the most respected members of society. It was with the coming of the ‘Age of Enlightenment’ in 18th century Europe that rational thinking took over from intuition and so began the separation that has only in the last half century or so seen Western astrology make a popular comeback. Today astrology is used for many reasons. It’s a way of learning about ourselves, our family and friends and also as a guide to the patterns that unfold in our lives. Through astrology we can make informed decisions about our health, relationships, careers and much more because it enables us to see ourselves and our potential with more clarity. And when we understand more of ourselves we are able to develop tolerance and understanding toward others. Birth charts are in effect like mirrors of our individual personalities. There are ten planets including the Sun and Moon (also called the Luminaries) in everyone’s chart, each representing a different cosmic force or vibration that affects our basic character traits and changing urges and needs. Planets provide the energies that drive our physical, emotional, mental, and intuitional systems and these are modified by their position in the sign and house of an individual’s chart and in relationship (aspect) to the other planets in that chart. Although most people know their Sun sign and the various traits associated with it there is at the time of birth a significant sign rising on the Eastern Horizon called the Ascendant or Rising Sign, which together with its ruling planet is equal in importance to the Sun and Moon position in the birth chart. Some still view astrology as nothing more than a touchyfeely, sentimental New Age superstition and maybe that view is understandable when few books or articles about astrology give an explanation of how or why it works. But our world is changing rapidly and there’s no doubt Western astrology is fast becoming a practical tool to guide us through the labyrinth of challenges we are currently facing and will face in the future. It is an elegant and beautiful symbol of the unity that surrounds us and is powerful evidence that we are connected not only to each other but to the creative force of our Universe. KEY FEATURE Anger

By Joy Fahey

Dear Joy I find myself feeling frustrated and angry nearly every day. I just don’t seem to be able to shake it off. I hate myself for feeling like this which just makes it worse. I find myself getting cross with everybody and everything and finding it difficult to control my emotions. Even my friends have noticed that I snap at them for no particular reason. Going to work is difficult as I’m always in such a bad mood and people there tend to avoid me. What can I do, can you help? Helen Hi Helen Well you’ve made a great move just writing to me to start with, and I’d bet it was a relief having done it! You’ve obviously got a lot of pent up energy looking for a way of expressing itself. In many of my letters I write about the fact we are all energy doing its thing, and sometimes it shows up in being angry. Firstly, all of us get angry sometimes, some people bottle it all up and some people just let it out, so be assured you are not alone in that. We have to look at it with a different perspective and find the positive. You’ve got lots of energy, that’s great; some people have to struggle to find enough energy to do the things they want to do. Your ‘angry’ energy is trying to tell you something, your job is to listen to what you’re trying to say. Once you start to look at it differently straight away you begin to change the focus, instead of being totally identified with the anger you become the observer of it, in other words you start to take control of it, rather than letting it have control of you. You need to ask yourself what is really going on, what really makes you mad. When I’m faced with these challenges I write a letter to myself. I write down all the

30

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

things that are going on in my head. If you like I download it out of my head and in doing so you clear the space to put a new positive program in. I have a journal for all my head downloads and it really does clear the blocks and frees me up. So that’s number one. Next you need to move your body and loose some energy in exercising. Take a brisk walk, its great therapy for shifting your energy and your perspective, or do a session at the gym, ride a bike, go for a swim. Any kind of exercise is not only necessary but essential for using your energy constructively rather than destructively. Thirdly turn this anger into gratitude in your thinking. This is real food for the soul to calm the waters. Focus on what you DO have rather than on the things you don’t. It’s so easy to fall into complaint mode which, in itself, makes anyone feel frustrated! List down all the things you have and feel grateful for, you will start to see just how fortunate you really are. Here’s one of my favourite affirmations to say to yourself each day to put you in the right frame of mind. “I begin my day with gratitude. I am grateful for another day. I am grateful to breath the air, I am grateful for the trees, the grass, and the sky. I open my mind to focus on gratitude today. I release all limiting beliefs and I choose gratitude instead” Talk to your friends about what you are doing and have a fun conversation about all the things you are all grateful for, it will make an interesting conversation and rebuild your friendships! All the best and ‘thank you’ for your letter Joy See more at www.joyfahey.com

KEY FEATURE Getting the Correct Advice

By Age Care Association

Age Care Association recently hosted a visit from the Mijas Foreigners’ Dept at their Advice Centre in Doña Lola, Calahonda. Anette Skou, coordinator of the Mijas Foreigners’ Dept visited the newly opened Advice Centre to give a presentation on some of the information available from them and to update Claudia Langer, Manager and her team of volunteers. Anette is originally from Denmark and has been with the Foreigners’ Dept since 1985, so she has plenty of experience to pass on! It was very informative and clarified some of the misconceptions which abound about the rules and regulations for ex pats living in the sunshine. As an example, she explained how to get on to the Padrón, the importance of doing so and the benefits in general. As the aim of the Age Care Advice Centre is to be a onestop-shop for information, particularly for the older local community on the Costa del Sol, this was a good way of

starting with a firm foundation of correct information to counteract the rumours and misinformation that circulate. Anette also advised about the many events run by the Mijas Foreigners’ Dept throughout the year including Friendship Days and the Blues Festival in July. Claudia is delighted that the Mijas Foreigners’ Dept is supporting the Age Care Advice Centre and said that she was looking forward to working with them in the future to the benefit of the older local community. The Advice Centre is located at Doña Lola, Calahonda, next to Oscar’s Bar and on the Bus 220 route. It is open Monday to Friday, 10-2 pm and everyone is welcome. KEY SPORTS England World Qualifiers

By Steve Billingham

SAN MARINO v ENGLAND, World Cup Qualifier, 22 March The StadioOlimpico in Serravalle has a capacity of 7,000. Wow! Goalkeeper Ben Foster was recalled to the squad as back up to Joe Hart. Frank Lampard skippered the side and Wayne Rooney sang the national anthem again. The bearded bloke who was a bit rough and ready with Walcott in the Wembley fixture, Della Valle is at the back for San Marino again. Klutz Della Valle turned the ball into his own net off a Leighton Baines cross after 12 minutes. ‘The brass band is annoying, it is like the vuvuzelas in the World Cup,’ remarked an observer, ‘Wonder if Bernie Clifton is among them (minus the ostrich of course.) ‘Mind you, the football isn’t helping, it is rubbish.’ Alex Oxslade-Chamberlain plays 1-2 with Wayne Rooney before turning again and doubling England’s lead on 28 minutes. Rooney crossed, Oxslade-Chamberlain headed down and Defoe tapped in from close range for England’s third. Ashley Young hit a pile driver with his weaker right foot for the fourth. Frank Lampard steers the fifth home (and his 28th England goal.) It says a lot for the strength of England’s midfield now when quality like Steven Gerrard and Scott Parker are only on the bench. ‘Watch this, this’ll be in,’ remarked an observer as Wayne Rooney lined a free kick up after 53 minutes. Sure enough, he curls it over the wall and away from the goalkeeper. And is then substituted. His replacement, Daniel Sturridge can only hit the post with a close range header moments later. Hart makes his first proper save of the match after 65 minutes. Then Ashley Young clipped a high ball in and Sturridge headered in for seven before Walker cut it back and Defoe tapped in for his second and England’s eighth. Can the San Marino number 19 score 9 goals in 10 min-

utes and rescue it for them? The final score finished England 8 San Marino 0, their highest score since the 8-0 Euro ’88 qualifier win over Turkey back in 1987. MONTENEGRO v ENGLAND March 26 Coming into the match, I thought the national press had made a bit of a hoo-hah about the central defensive pairing of Lescott and Smalling. Perfectly able defenders and England will win I thought. Lescott has defended well (and scored a goal) at Euro Championships. Why worry against Montenegro? Over-cautious perhaps? The Montenegro stadium holds 12,000. Yowzers! Wayne Rooney exquisitely chipped the keeper after 2 minutes but hit a post. After a Glen Johnson drive forces a save, Rooney heads in off a Gerrard corner to give England the lead. Milner fired a low cross in after 27 minutes when he might have had a go himself but Rooney was unable to convert. ‘Montenegro haven’t looked dangerous at all remarked an observer.’ ‘England have looked far more dangerous.’ A Game Of Two Halves Jovetic, the Montenegro forward headered against the side netting and they started applying a bit more pressure. Vucinic should have buried a chance for the equaliser on the hour, he also curled wide on 71 minutes. Jovetic also looked dangerous. After a mad goalmouth scramble the ball bounced around like a pinball. Hart made a fantastic save from substitute Damjanovic’s header before he squeezed it home having had another effort blocked. Steven Gerrard had a couple of accurate, long range hits but they were saved. A Gerrard free-kick is then scrambled away... but only just. The ‘iches’ of Montenegro got a share of the spoils with a 1-1 draw.

KEY PETS Laws relating to Dangerous Dogs The laws in Spain relating to dangerous dogs are very strict. It is now 5 years since I registered my dogs Boy Boy and Sheba as ’Dangerous’ and after a hectic week thought it would be of interest for other owners to be aware of the amount of documentation required for those that have not yet registered their dogs. I thought I would list the documents I had to obtain for my new licence, however some documentation may differ between municipalities. It is best to call your local town hall for specific requirements: A photocopy of my residencia and 2 passport photos. Original Certificate showing that I had no criminal record. I required this certification from Seville. Medical certificate showing my psychological aptitude (similar to that required for people purchasing firearms) which included showing physical capability. An Insurance insurance policy covering the animal with a Đ120,000 liability for civil responsibility and a receipt to prove the last payment. I had to produce copies of the microchip and vaccinations to verify they were up to date. The laws are strict I am required to ensure my dog wears a muzzle outside in public areas and must be kept on lead no longer than 2 metres in length and only one dog per person. I am the only person that can walk one dog at a time. If a dog is kept outside of the home, they must be secured with suitable walls or fencing min 3 meters and if lost, reported to the local authorities within 48 hours. It is possible to take a test with a specially qualified vet to show your competence at controlling your dog and testing their aggression – if passed, you will be given a certificate to prove the dog does not have to wear a muzzle outside the home. This test is carried out by a vet who is qualified in training and behaviour normally at a Guardia Civil dog training school. Owners with no licence of a dangerous dog which are listed and not adhering to the law could be fined up to 115,000 Euros. Authorities will also have the ability to order dogs to be ‘put down’ if seen to be dangerous and/or aggressive. I asked at my Ayuntamiento what the fine is if a person does not have a licence and was informed from 3000 to 6000 Euros.

All dogs need to be registered before 3 months of age. On a visit to the vet, a dog will need to be micro-chipped and the vet can complete the registration documents. Over and above this, owners of potentially dangerous dogs need to register dogs at the Town Hall. Licences are valid for five years. This is not an easy application and unless you are able to speak and read Spanish fluently, I would strongly recommend that you first discuss this with your vet and seek his assistance on each stage. You should also be prepared to pay for this service. Here is the list of dogs considered dangerous or classified as potentially dangerous: a. Those belonging to one of the following breeds and their crosses: * Pit Bull Terrier * Staffordshire Bull Terrier * American Staffordshire Terrier * Rottweiler * Dogo Argentino * Fila Brasileiro * Tosa Inu * Akita Inu b. Those animals that have all or many of the following characteristics: * Strong musculature, powerful or athletic constitution, robustness, agility, vigour and endurance. * Strong character and marked courage. * Short hair. * Thoracic perimeter between 60 and 80 centimeters (24 and 32 inches), height at the shoulder between 50 and 70 centimeters (20 and 28 inches) and weight over 20 kg (44 lbs). * Voluminous, square, robust head, with a wide and large skull and muscular and pronounced cheeks. Strong and large jaws, robust, wide and deep snout. * Broad, short and muscled neck. * Broad, thick, deep chest, with arched ribs and short and muscled back. * Straight, parallel and robust forelegs and very muscular hindquarters, with relatively long hind legs at a moderate angle.

Spring is in the air at Frenchbullrus... with two successful matings in March and a further two litters expected later in the year, it looks like it will be a busy year for us, so it seems only right to discuss the breed we are experts in but in doing so a lot of what we are going to write about could apply to any pedigree dog. We would however first like to welcome Helle and her husband Kim into the Frenchbullrus family. They are owners of Harald,Molly and Cala, 3 beautiful pedigree French bulldogs from a long line of champion dogs in Denmark. We are proud to join with them in the successful mating between Harold and our Cala and Lilly and look forward to mating Harald with Lulu later in the year. Molly will then be paired with our amazing boy, Buster, bred by us 3 years ago. All puppies will have pedigrees and will leave home with pet passport, 1st and 2nd injections (as standard) micro-chip, fully wormed, vet checked with puppy pack. We are also proud to now be able to offer a gold package which will include completed pet passport with all injections in rabies, 3 full vet checks, micro-chip, pedigree, personalised photo album of your puppy from birth to leaving home, premium puppy pack and your puppy insured for a whole year, with cover active in all European countries!!! This will mean that we now feel happy for our dogs to travel from 15 weeks of age. We would also like to point out that anybody who has one of our dogs be it a pup or a rescue dog, can enjoy our closed members page which is active 24/7 meaning you have access to us at all times for advice. You can also use this page to meet your pup’s family members, from mum and dad, nan, grandad, great grandparents, aunties, uncles to cousins and of course your pup’s brothers and sisters. So to move on to a few issues we are worried about, Google French bulldogs and you will come across some things that concern us –e.g. “french bulldogs don’t breed naturally” “most french bulldogs cannot give birth naturally” “french bulldogs never have large

36

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

litters”. If this was true, we would have to seriously consider breeding this breed, as if today’s dogs are no longer able to mate or give birth naturally then we have a problem with the breed in question, which needs to be addressed. Thankfully Crufts did this for us last year with the French bulldog being stopped from going any further by the vets who found that the Frenchies they were looking at were so far removed from the breed standard code and that there were issues with the overall health! Thank God and about time, because we were getting really worried that the public would soon forget what a real French bulldog looks like! So you like the flat face, wide chest, short body and legs and sticky out eyes. You also like the new Tea Cup French bulldog? This by the way is a genetic fault and they nearly always have serious health issues and they should never be bred from. French bulldogs should be sporty looking, even set, have a good open nose, not too flat a face, with even set eyes and should be able to enjoy a walk without getting out of breath. All our dogs breed naturally and give birth naturally, and with all our dogs being family members with their pups being brought up in the family home meaning pups leave us, social, happy, well behaved pups. We would also like to point out that 90% of the French bulldogs we rescue have serious health or social issues, where they have been badly bred then sold to people with little idea about the breed and who have no access to an expert to help them with any teething problems they may have...We have 1 French bulldog on our books as we go to press with social issues. This lovely boy will need a loving, understanding home. If you feel you could offer a rescue Frenchie a good home, please contact us. We also network with other rescue centres and are normally the first to know when a rescue French bulldog comes up. Find us on Facebook or go to our website www.frenchbullrus.com. Go to links page and tap direct link to our many Facebook pages.

KEY PETS A Word of Advice on Protection for the Dreaded Sand Fly

This is the time of year to upgrade your dog’s defences for both internal and external parasites. We continue treatments for these conditions throughout the whole year but I realise that many dog owners feel they only need to protect their animals from spring until the end of summer. I can assure you this is not the case, as this is the reason so many dogs here in Spain are affected by the dreaded sand fly resulting in Leishmaniasis. If detected quickly and treated properly, your dog can be saved. If not, this will mean your dog will have to take expensive treatment and continual blood tests for the rest of its life. There is still no cure for this affliction. Depending where in the dog’s system it attacks, is very critical. We know of one of our males, Van, who is now 7 years old and lives in San Pedro who has survived with the problem for the last 4 years. It has been a very expensive procedure for his owner, but he has 3 of our dogs and just loves the Rottweilers. It was a very strange set of circumstances. The dog came back to us to be used as a stud as he is very well bred and a son of multi champion, Ken de Breogan. I collected him from San Pedro on a Friday evening as the owner was going away for the weekend. The owner explained to me he had an allergic reaction to the pollen from his fruit trees. He stated the dog had been affected the year before and his vet had given him treatment which had cleared the problem. He was so confident that I did not look carefully at the dog before we put him in the car. By the time we arrived home it was dark, so I decided to look at the dog in the morning. To my horror whenever I touched the dog’s skin, I realised this was not a simple allergy, but it was a major problem which required urgent treatment. I contacted my vet who was attending a seminar in Cordoba, explaining the situation. He gave me a few tips to check various points but nothing confirmed what we suspected. I contacted the owner who was in Barcelona. He said he would drive back and meet me at his finca on the Sunday morning. Needless to say we did not try to use the dog for the purpose of breeding, as we were afraid it maybe Leishmaniasis, even though all the quick tests the vet had proposed did not confirm the situation. I

met with the owner as arranged and he was still sure it was a problem with the fruit tree pollen, but reluctantly agreed to take the dog to his vet in the morning, The next day before lunch he called to confirm the dog had Leishmaniasis in his skin but would have to await the results of further blood tests to determine if the problem had spread to his organs. This took a further 2 days. During this time the dog remained with the vet, as he placed the dog on a continual treatment regime until he knew the extent of the problem. At last back came the test results confirming it had not passed to any of his organs but that he would be placed on a strict treatment regime of injections and tablets for the first month. At the end of this period he would have further blood tests to prove what form of treatment would be required from then. The vet claimed that the dog’s strength and condition had saved him from further damage plus the fact it had been detected in the very early stages. The dog was a 60kg plus Rottweiler. He has not lost any condition or weight. When he was sick, the main signs of a problem was when you touched his skin it felt like a rough campo road and a little eye discharge. Only sign of any problem, he is on daily treatment with one additional treatment every 30 days, 2 or 3 days before he is due his 30 day treatment his eye discharge appears, within one day after this treatment it disappears. All his blood tests have proved normal but as you can imagine the cost of the treatment has been tremendous, all for the love of a dog. This dog from a puppy had been treated with Ex-spot but the vet convinced the owner to change to another product called Advantix which has only 50% of the protection against the sand fly and had been used for only 2 months before the problem arose. The other 2 dogs have had no problem and they are both over 10years old. They are and always have been much more relaxed than Van as he is always on the go and requires a lot more attention. At present only Ex-spot & Scalibur collars are proved effective but they are very expensive. We are presently involved in proving a much cheaper alternative which works on a similar basis as Ex-spot. Up till now it has proved very effective.

KEY COMPUTERS Internet Television, Everybody Please Panic!!! Right, after a short 8-year break we are back with more, useless technical stuff, this time about the immediate future of television on the Costa del Sol. Satellite vs. Internet What is new then? Well, as many of you might have discovered (those that do not have a Sky Plus subscription) Channel 5 went missing in December last year. This apparently is a prelude to a major changeover of English channels from one satellite to another, which will mean stronger and better signal for everyone, provided of course you are in the UK! For everyone else, and specifically for the Costa del Sol, this is really bad news. The new satellite beam is a lot narrower than the existing one and you will now need a larger dish to receive the signal. Rumours have it about six meters. Unless you have really tolerant neighbours, this is not really an option. The solution to all this lies once again in the Internet. Why would you want to receive your television signals over the Internet, then? Well, mainly because you have no other choice. Over the years, the English community has been blessed with the possibility of receiving Sky, FreeView and other English channels via the “traditional” dish on the roof, which gives you a very high quality viewing experience, but for other less privileged people, this has not been the case. Scandinavians, Russians and others have always had to look for other ways of enjoying their homeland channels on the Coast. It is called IP-TV streaming or just television over the Internet and is for the moment a vast and completely opaque market with many providers, offering many packages in many different qualities. Technical Stuff These are mainly two popular ways of passing TV signals over the Internet. Both have advantages and drawbacks. The Slingbox system consists in setting up a box for each user at the beginning of the chain, which will send all the channels available at the origin down to you, giving you a complete copy of whatever is available at home. This is specifically good, when you wish to see more than the mainstream channels, i.e. thematic channels, reviews of old comedy etc. However, the compression method applied by Sling is inferior to the “pure” streaming as codecs, the software used for compression and decompressing the signal, has come a long way since these boxes were first developed. The other option, I call it pure streaming, compresses a certain set of

40

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

By Hans Jeppe Nielsen

channels at a higher quality, but has the problem that if the Internet speed goes below their threshold points, it simply stops working until the speed is reestablished. Furthermore, you are forced into accepting the channel bouquet of your provider. The signal in any case will never be better than the weakest link in the chain, which can be anything from a faulty signal reception in the country of origin all the way down the network to your own internet speed. You might even experience some Internet providers, which will let you browse at full speed, but somehow limit your streaming experience, as this is a heavy load on their infrastructure. As well as with traditional television providers, there are huge differences in choice and quality of your provider. It is important to realize, that the more hardware your signal provider has invested in at the other end of the system, i.e. the country of origin of the signal, the better the quality per MB. This will result in a clearer signal using the same speed or the same signal using less speed. Which one depends on the choice of your provider. Is it Legal? Hmm. The packages we sell in our offices are all official, you get a bill with VAT, and my provider claims solemnly, he pays the SGAE, which is the Spanish Society of Artists. We therefore assume it is; but it is sort of a grey zone. When for instance Sky buys legal rights to show a movie, they obtain those rights to a certain geographically limited area and pay for that. If you then later pass that signal on to somewhere outside the zone, is that legal then, as you have actually bought it already, and can you then do what you want with it, including possibly pass it on to others? This discussion has existed since the beginning of time and whatever has been said about receiving satellite television on the Costa del Sol, surely can be applied to IP TV. The EU furthermore have issued a circular saying there should be no boundaries between any countries with regards to television signals, so all in all it’s probably a case for legal experts. Anyway, I hope as always I have added to the confusion, even if I have only just scratched the surface. Please drop round if you have any queries or doubts and I shall be happy to show you the different options live, which brings me to the most important part of the article: WISE is now located on Avenida de España, 1, still in Calahonda, in front of the church in new and larger premises, you can find our advert below on this page, hope to see you soon.

KEY FINANCE This Issue’s Financial News Roundup In the UK the Chancellor has now played his hand and revealed his Budget and we now know that the deficit this year will be £123.2bn. Gross domestic product, which grew by a negligible 0.2% in 2012, is forecast to expand by 0.6% this year and by 1.8% in 2014. Needless to say, those growth projections are lower than they were when they were last wheeled out in the Autumn Statement. Elsewhere in the speech were the usual selection of tax cuts and stimulus measures which have now been well-documented. It was not the Budget for growth that had been predicted and hoped for but “a Budget for people who aspire to work hard and get on”, “a Budget for an aspiration nation” and “a Budget for a Britain that wants to be prosperous, solvent and free”. Investors didn’t know quite what to make of it but they had great fun trying to come to a decision before, during and after the 54-minute speech. During the London session Cable ranged across one and a half US cents and the pound covered more than one euro cent. The Chancellor did not shift the emphasis of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) from inflation to growth (although he did say the MPC’s remit was up for discussion). The minutes of the March MPC meeting did not show any increase in the number of members voting for more asset purchases. The employment data did not show an increase in either the rate of unemployment or the number of jobseekers. There was plenty that could have gone wrong for the pound but none of it did. In the euro zone just when we thought matters were settling, up pops the issue in Cyprus who have to find around 5 billion Euros before receiving the bailout from the ECB etc. It’s now well documented that all Cypriot bank account holders were asked to pay however the government voted against this and now finds itself in a position of potentially running out of cash and leaving

the country bankrupt. Who will have bailed them out runs between, yes, the EU/ECB/IMF, Russia or maybe the church by the time you read this - however the answer will have been found. Looking forward and the incoming new governor for The Bank of England will now have a different job to the last one as The Bank has now been handed new powers to look at unemployment and boost growth. It’s not just Cyprus however that is causing some concern. The OECD has trimmed its growth forecast for France and suggests it must do a lot more to be competitive and create jobs at the same time suggesting the French government avoid any further spending cuts. Better news for the zone came when a recent survey showed consumer confidence improving and investors still liking Spanish and Italian bonds and Portugal successfully selling government bonds. In the USA the Federal Reserve commits itself to long term low interest rates and maintaining its monthly bond buying programme and with unemployment dropping and new housing starts increasing, it’s beginning to look a healthier picture in the US. Exchange rates over the month have seen quite a bit of volatility and are shown below

KEY LAW The “Like” Button and Cookies Do you mind that those “some ones” will sell your personal information – information you thought was private – to advertisers, spammers and even identity thieves? “Like” buttons can be used to track your preferences, for potential use in all of these activities. As such they can be in breach of internet safety privacy laws. The German state of Schleswig-Holstein in 2011 said that the buttons breached German Data Protection Laws and told federal agencies that they should remove “Like” buttons and similar social plug-ins from their websites. KEY LAW Check Your Spanish Will Inheritance tax is becoming a huge concern for many people and it is not always easy to calculate the amount you will have to pay because this tax is not a fixed percentage but on a scale that depends on three main factors: A) The value of the Estate (real estate properties, deposits in bank accounts, cars, etc. less the money owed to third parties) that you would inherit; B) Your relationship to the deceased; C) How wealthy you are. Apart from that, there is a great difference if the deceased was a Spanish resident in Andalucia for the last five years of his life and if the beneficiary had been resident anywhere in Andalucia for the last year. When both circumstances are concurrent, the beneficiary would have nothing to pay if the value of his part of the estate is less than 175,000 Euros and if he/she was the spouse, child or grandchild of the deceased. If this is not the case, then each beneficiary would have to pay in accordance with the value of his/her share of the estate and they would inherit with a discount of 15,956.87 Euros per beneficiary if they are the child, grandchild, parent, grandparent or spouse of the deceased (for children and grandchildren, this amount will be increased by 3,990.72 Euros for each year that they are under 21, to a maximum of 47,858.59 Euros). If the beneficiaries are a brother, sister, uncle, aunt, niece, nephew and an ascendant or descendent in law, the amount of the reduction would be only 7,993.46 Euros. Many wills have been made establishing that should the husband die first, everything will be left to the wife and should the wife die first, everything would be left to the husband. If they both die at the same time, everything would go to the children in equal shares. This has always been the normal way for the British, but now we should revise it. In fact the way of disposing of your property and assets in Spain could now be wrong in many instances. For example, if the deceased had not been living as a resident in Spain during the previous 5 years, then the Andalucian reduction of 175,000 Euros would not apply. The net value of the estate to be inherited in total would be 75,000 Euros, if his wife and four children outlived him and none of them had wealth in excess of 402,678.11 Euros in Spain. In this case, should the will say that everything would go to

By Jose Luis Navarro, Intercala’s Solicitor and Property Administrator his wife, she would discount the amount of the legal reduction by 15,956.87 Euros from the 75,000 Euros and would have to pay inheritance tax on the difference of 59,043.13 Euros, i.e. tax of 6,128.49 Euros. In the same example, supposing the will would have said that everything would go to the wife and four children in equal shares, there would be no tax to be paid because the share for each of the beneficiaries would be 15,000 Euros, and as the reduction is 15,956.87 Euros, none of them would have to pay anything. It is now very important to check your particular case to organise your will in advance in order to avoid or minimize inheritance taxes, so please, take proper advice.

Cerveceria Tipi Tapa has a selection of fine meats from the BBQ all served with potatoes and salad, such as Mixed Grill for two people, other fine cuts of steak, pork or various meat skewers, a selection of fish etc. As the name of the restaurant suggests, it also serves a full range of the ever popular Spanish “tapas”, small portions either for a snack or to pick and mix with your friends. Tapas are served all day so Tipi Tapa is also an ideal place to eat if you are a little outside normal dining hours. A selection from the tapas menu includes favourites such as Russian Salad and other salad variations, a good variety of “embutidos”, different types of Spanish sausage, hams and Salamis from around the country, prawn and fish dishes, meatballs, croquettes, several vegetarian options such as Tortilla, Caramelised Goat’s Cheese with Crispy Almonds, Brie Blini with Cranberry Jam, Aubergine with Cane Sugar and many, many more both for meat and fish lovers and vegetarians too. Tipi Tapa is an ideal place to try Spanish favourites. We have now had the pleasure of visiting Cerveceria Tipi Tapa and have tried first hand some of the tapas mentioned above. We were warmly greeted, the service is outstanding but the food even more so. Everything comes beautifully presented and is of the highest quality such as the “Cinco Jotas” award winning ham which was the best we have had in a long time. Cerveceria Tipi Tapa serves the best quality Beef from Galicia which is renowned for its outstanding flavour. We have been able to sample this which was included on the Menu of the Day and I can confirm that the quality was indeed outstanding. There are also other options available on the menu del dia at a reasonable price. We are delighted to recommend Cerveceria Tipi Tapa to our readers. Punctual, honest, reliable and they clear up after themselves. Their knowledge regarding air conditioning is quite cool to say the least. Whether you need air conditioning for a bedroom in an apartment or in a business such as a restaurant that needs ducting, Airtech can satisfy your needs. Units can be used for either hot or cold air. It might be a good idea to have your existing system serviced now before the weather turns really hot and have it cleaned, sanitized and re-gassed, if necessary. The laws have changed recently and all units should now run on the new R422D gas. The latest systems run much quieter and are more economical than they were a few years ago. Airtech are registered with the Junta de Andalucia and carry full public liability insurance. This makes them one of the top companies to use as they have dotted all the ‘i’s’ and crossed the ‘t’s’. Why not give them a call to chat about your needs? No obligation quote. They may not be the cheapest, but their efficiency and knowledge offers the best value. We recommend this service. BEDS

The Bed Warehouse is your one-stop shop for a new bed or mattress. When you consider how much time you spend in bed, or in some cases, how much fun you have in bed, it is important that you choose something

KEY NEWS that is really comfortable and that suits your individual needs! You spend much more on a car, but let’s face it, if it was not comfortable, you would probably change it. So, if you are not a good sleeper or have various aches and pains, you may well need a new bed or mattress. For those of you that don’t know us well, during the last 10 years Sandy has had problems getting comfortable in bed and sleeping. The lights are on, then they are off and she is in and out of bed. She was actually driving herself mad so I had a chat with Peter and his daughter, Emma of Beds. They invited us both down to the warehouse and she was able to test all sorts of mattresses, thick ones, sprung, memory foam, in fact anything you can think of. Sandy picks up the story now. As hubby said, it was a bit like a stage show and I was playing the leading role. I tried all sorts of mattresses at the warehouse and in the end I chose a top quality memory foam mattress. As the existing base was an awkward size, this was made to measure. My mattress was delivered by Peter and Emma. They managed the difficult delivery as we have a spiral staircase and so had to heave it up to the bedroom on a rope. They even took away the old mattress without any problem. What can I say – we both sleep like babies now. Why I did not do this a long time ago, I don’t know. In fact I sleep so well now, that I don’t really want to get out of my bed in the morning! I feel much more refreshed and vibrant, so maybe it’s a new partner I need after all? Anyway, we highly recommend the Bed Warehouse. They will shortly be stocking all kinds of solid oak furniture so pop down to have a look. In the meantime if you are suffering, please see Peter and Emma. The Bed Warehouse sells most well-known UK top quality brands and they are much cheaper than most other outlets. Years of knowledge. Please see main ad.

CAMBRIDGE 800

Your Weight Plan, Your Way. Summer is on its way. This means only one thing. Cambridge 800 is heading towards Conference time. So what does this mean? The Slimmer of the Year will soon be announced. Cambridge Slimmer of the Year wins a holiday for themselves, and for their Partner. Also their Consultant, who helped them to lose weight and keep it off, joins them on an all-expenses paid holiday. At the Conference, the Consultant of the Year will also be revealed. They too win a holiday! Why is Cambridge so generous? It is all about people. Cambridge is a nutritionally balanced weight loss programme, consisting of 5 different Steps. Cambridge can be used with and without food as a method to lose weight, stabilise your weight and keep it off for good. Cambridge changes people’s lives and improves their health. It is all about people and when people achieve great results, they should be rewarded, and that’s exactly what Cambridge do. Cambridge also creates careers for people. In Spain this is important. There are precious few jobs, let alone careers in Spain. Cambridge is proud to have invested heavily into Spain. So who can use Cambridge? Most people can use one or more of the programmes. As with all weight loss regimens, some people are contra-indicated. The skill of the highly trained

Cambridge 800 Consultant is vital in the support and guidance of their customers to help their customer stay on track and re-educate their eating habits. Customers are supported all the way through their weight loss journey and into long term maintenance, or as Cambridge prefers to call it, “my life”. Why? If you don’t change your lifetime habits, you will put your weight back on again and Cambridge wants their customers to succeed long term. This is why so many Cambridge customers become Cambridge Consultants. So who wins with Cambridge? Everyone! If you as a customer improve your health, you win. If you win a prize, you win. If you gain a career you win. Your family will win too. Cambridge is like no other company. Developed back in the 1960’s by Professor Alan Howard with evidence based independent Clinical Trials, Cambridge is this summer 29 years old, so no fad diet programme. In fact far from it. Used by many medical professionals to help their patients lose weight, Cambridge is a product of choice in the UK and many other countries and is fast becoming one of the leading weight loss programmes in Spain. Watch this space for more information of the winners at the Cambridge Conference to be held in June of this year. DATE CLUB LOCK & KEY PARTIES

Get ready to unlock your possibilities! Lock and Key Parties are the hottest interactive and fun way for singles to socialise, make new friends...or just have a great time! For busy single professionals, what could be better than meeting up to 100 people or more in one night? On arrival at the Party, women get LOCKS and guys get KEYS and everyone mingles while trying to unlock to win prizes. The concept was created for the purpose of breaking the ice and increasing the odds of meeting that special someone. Unlocking the locks increases your chances of winning great prizes, and maybe even finding a great new relationship. The game repeats itself throughout the evening so you meet many people, not just those who you unlock with.”When you go to a nightclub or a party, it can often be intimidating to approach people. At most singles’ parties, people don’t mix much at all, the men and women kind of stay with people they know and don’t interact very much. At our Lock and Key Parties, the whole point is to approach people and now you have the perfect excuse,” says DateClub director Sarah Allibone. “At our Lock and Key events, the stress or potential embarrassment of being rejected on the spot is eliminated”. Each time a lock and key match, the successful couple are given a raffle ticket each for a chance to win great prizes. They are also issued with new locks and keys to go out and surf the crowd all over again. Listen for the familiar sound of yelling and laughter when someone has found a match! “Men like it because unlike at a club or bar, they have a reason to approach women without getting any ‘attitude’ from them,” says Ana, the Madrid Event Host. “And women like it because they can approach men without giving them the wrong impression”. One recent male participant in Barcelona was amazed at how the women thought nothing of going up to him and asking him to try his key in their lock. He said he only got 2 unlocks during the Party but left with 4 telephone numbers! Success stories also abound. Sarah says former Lock and Key Party participants have emailed her with news of their engagements or marriages. For much less than the cost of an average date, admission to DateClub’s Lock and Key Parties is just 10 – 15 Euros, which typically includes a welcome drink and snacks as well as great music and prizes. Their next Party is being held on Saturday 5th May at Mozaic Restaurant & Lounge in El Rosario, Marbella. You can register at the door on the night of the event, but are strongly encouraged to visit www.dateclubconnect.com to confirm your attendance in advance. Without RSVP you are not guaranteed entry into the Party. DateClub has been established since 2006 and currently organizes Speed Dating events and Singles Parties in Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, and now on the Costa del Sol. Register on their website to receive news of their next events.

QR CODES

You may have noticed a few of those squares with the funny pattern inside them. At Key to Mijas Costa we have been using one on the front cover for quite some time now. Why? Because if you scan over it with your Smartphone, you get to like us on Facebook. How does it work? You simply download a scanner App. There are loads to choose from and what’s even better is that they are FREE. Once you have downloaded the App onto your phone, just place the phone in the camera site of the QR Code and then magic! If, for example, you scan the one on page 3, this will direct you straight to Ultimate Estate’s website so that you can see all the properties they have on their books. No need to type in any domain name, just swipe and you are there! They do not have to be huge – from a square centimetre will do, although of course if you want one on a van or billboard for example, they should be proportionate. There can be all sorts of uses for the QR Code. Turn to page 72 and you will see what we mean. The QR Code can come in a size and colour of your choice. Readers – get swiping. Advertisers – if you would like one, just swipe the yellow QR Code on page 72 to contact us.

REYCLING ANALYST

Every now and then we have to ‘loz’ a piece of furniture etc that we no longer need or one that is broken, also items such as a TV or white goods that are simply no longer cost effective to repair and we are at a loss to know what to do with them. Obviously sneaking down to the ‘basura’ is not the correct way of handling this as it is quite unsightly for the neighbours and is also not environmentally friendly as well as being illegal. If you have such items for disposal, why not give Recycling Analysts a ring and they will come and remove your unwanted goods free of charge. We highly recommend this service. Many languages spoken. Please check out the main ad in this magazine.
