KEY BEAUTY Sun, Sea, Chlorine and My Hair It is getting to that time of year where we have to start worrying about the effects of the sun, chlorine and sea has on our hair. We go through it every year living here in Spain.

By Tracy, Hair Magic

THE EFFECTS OF CHLORINE FROM THE POOL are devastating to our hair, more so than the sun. When you have a swim, you should wash your hair and condition it as soon as you can as the chlorine continues bleaching for 24 hours. GREEN HAIR is a very common result of swimming a lot, especially children, as they are continually in the pool. If your hair is blonde and you see a green tinge to it, applying Tomato Ketchup is a bit messy but it does get rid of the green, although if you are to continue swimming, the ketchup is only a temporary measure. When October comes and we stop swimming, the green just fades out naturally. FADING COLOUR is a real problem in the summer. We now have colour conditioners that completely solve this problem. My hair is dyed red and I have always had a really hard time in the sun as my colour fades terribly. Now I apply my red conditioner and leave it for two minutes and rinse and my hair is a richer colour than it has ever been. AT HAIR MAGIC we have these COLOUR CONDITIONERS in stock and we have RED, BLACK, BLONDE AND BROWN and I highly recommend them. THE SEA When you are on the beach your hair feels sticky and horrible after swimming in the sea, but really it causes no damage. It’s the salt making it feel bad. When you wash and condition, it will feel the same as it did. Just keep out of the sun or cover it up. If you need any advice, TRACY AT HAIR MAGIC will always give you a free consultation.

KEY BEAUTY Marbella Beauty Academy visit The N.E.C Beauty Show 2013

The best show ever! We were so excited to explore the stands at this year’s professional beauty exhibition we just wanted to share with you some of the products we discovered. Henna tattooing was the first thing we tried, wow!! So glamorous with blue glitter and diamonds, it took 10 minutes to apply freehand directly from the tube. I really want to try this myself, so many designs to try. It looks beautiful on the feet too! Next we went to the Samina Mineral make-up stand, where our make-up was applied by a professional make-up artist using pure mineral make-up foundation, blusher, eye shadow and lipstick all dusted over with a gold fixing powder

8

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

to finish!......it lasted sooo long; 6 hours later our make-up looked like it had been freshly applied and the added bonus for us ladies living in the sun is that it is waterproof! No more make-up melting off as soon as you apply it!! Very impressed! We watched Miss England have her teeth whitened still wearing her diamond tiara, swimsuit and sash. Big rollers were the order of the day for big smooth hair and moving ceramic plated straighteners for conditioning not drying and splitting hair. Things just keep getting better! We saw nails finished in pink suede, with pearls, diamonds and painted in coffee and cream, endless nail stands were dazzling. We are looking forward to taking our students with us next year!

KEY HEALTH Commencement of the 2013 “Positively Pink” & “Positively Blue” Screening Programmes! As you will know, Positively Pink is a Mijas-based charity and its sole purpose is to raise the necessary funds to provide education, support and a FREE breast screening programme to British Women and Men who live on the Costa del Sol. The screening programme is a comprehensive screening process (Gold Standard) that includes a consultation, physical examination, health education, a mammogram or ultrasound or in some cases both and an English translation of the result(s). This is carried out in conjunction with Clinica Medicare, a Nurse led British health centre based in La Cala de Mijas and Dr David Deardon a UK trained Specialist and the head of The British Surgical Clinic. Medicare and its medical team provide their time, clinic space and expertise free of charge for the charity. During the 2012 screening programme over 420 men and women accessed the FREE programme with 10 ladies receiving a positive diagnosis but all are being treated and doing well. During the 2012 programme Positively Pink spent in excess of €35,700.00 to ensure that screening is available to all UK expatriates living on the Costa del Sol regardless of age or circumstances. Lorraine Palmer, the founder of Positively Pink, believes that “early detection is your best protection” and this certainly proved to be the case during the 2012 campaign. The majority of the Ladies who received a positive diagnosis would not have ordinarily been screened via the State screening programme as they are over the upper age limit. Positively Pink has an amazing calendar of events planned for 2013 (see aside). The charity remains committed to raising the necessary funds to continue with the FREE screening programme. All funds raised by Positively Pink are used solely to cover the costs of the ultrasounds and mammograms, all of the volunteers who run and support the charity do so without any cost to the charity. All administration costs are absorbed by the El Oceano Hotel & Spa. In January 2013 Positively Pink launched a new Charity solely for men, Positively Blue. This has been set up to duplicate the services of Positively Pink and raise sufficient funds to provide a FREE screening programme for Prostate and Testicular cancer. In conjunction with Clinica Medicare and Dr Wolfgang Kleimeier of Clinica Urologica de Marbella, an established and well respected Specialist in Urology.

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

FREE PSA blood tests for prostate cancer and a full programme of education, information and support for testicular cancer will be available for all British Men living on the Costa del Sol. Prostate cancer is a common cancer in older men. Every year 22,000 men are diagnosed in the UK alone. Around 8 in 10 cases occur in men over the age of 65. It is rare in men under 50. Unlike many other cancers, prostate cancer is often present for many years without you realising it. This is because in many cases the cancer is slow growing and can take many years to cause any symptoms. Although uncommon, cancer of the testis is the most common cancer in young men in the UK. About 1 in 500 men between the ages of 15 and 50 develop cancer of the testis. The exact cause is not known. However, if caught early it is one of the easiest cancers to treat and cure. We are delighted to confirm to you that appointments for both Positively Pink & Positively Blue are available to book by calling Clinica Medicare on 952 835 776. The programme will run every Tuesday (every other for Positively Blue), will run until the middle of December 2013, with appointments being made on a first come first served basis. The must have for summer - support the charity Positively Pink - car sunscreens only 5.00 Euros. Available from either the El Oceano Hotel or Clinica Medicare. IMPORTANT NOTE: as in previous years the screenings are offered free of charge, but the charity would ask all attendees to the programmes to be generous with any donations they wish to make, as these funds help the charity fund future years programmes. KEY HEALTH Prelox (R) - To Make Love Longer Better When Quality of Life Matters Time steals from us every day. It weakens the body and mind and dulls the senses. But, once in a while, an opportunity arises to slow down time and recapture what it has stolen; to experience again the kind of sexual pleasure you were once capable of. Prelox (R) is a remarkable, new food supplement that can help most men maintain sexual wellness. Prelox (R) can help recapture the sexual pleasure and passion time diminishes, without affecting spontaneity. Prelox (R) has been scientifically shown to enhance male sexual pleasure. It can help revitalise your sexual performance, maintain your confidence and achieve high levels of pleasure and sexual satisfaction, both for yourself and your partner. Prelox (R) can help you make love longer and better; that means it can help you experience sexual wellness and fulfilment, one of the greatest joys of life. What is Prelox (R)? Prelox (R) is a patented combination of two naturally occurring substances, L-Arginine and Pycnogenol (R). L-Arginine is an essential amino acid found in many foods. In contrast, Pycnogenol (R) is obtained only from an extract of the bark of the French Maritime pine tree. It is the unique interaction between these two substances which helps to maintain healthy blood vessels and sustain blood flow to the genital area, which in turn, is important in the body’s sexual response, ability to maintain erections and ultimate sexual satisfaction. Some of the most frequently asked Questions about Prelox (R) Why should I consider Prelox (R)? Prelox (R) is a safe, drug-free way to enhance sexual pleasure which assists the body’s ability to maintain an erection. Feeling confident and secure makes you feel capable of achieving greater satisfaction for yourself and your partner. Is Prelox (R) Safe? Neither of the naturally occurring nutrients present in Prelox (R), L-Arginine or Pycnogenol (R) have been reported to be toxic or to have any significant adverse effects. Does Prelox (R) have Side Effects? A small percentage of people may experience flushing or headaches when they first begin using Prelox (R) but this should lesson with regular use. If you are seriously ill, on multiple medications, suffer from severe hypertension or heart disease, consult your physician before using Prelox (R). How does Prelox (R) work? Prelox (R) is a proprietary blend of L-Arginine and Pycnogenol (R). L-Arginine is used by the body to form a substance called nitric oxide which, in turn, plays an important role in controlling blood vessel diameter and hence circulatory flow. Pycnogenol (R) contains substances which activate enzymes within the body necessary for converting L-Arginine into nitric oxide; in addition, Pycnogenol (R) contains powerful antioxidants, which help to maintain healthy blood vessels by protecting against

By Anni’s Vital Shop

damaging free radicals continually produced within the body. How do I take Prelox (R)? Two tablets twice a day for the first two weeks. Then one or two tablets twice a day to maintain your enhanced pleasure and performance. Why do I need Four Tablets a Day for the First Two Weeks? L-Arginine begins working immediately by enhancing blood flow. However, the vascular system becomes more responsive to the ingredients in Prelox (R) with time. Please note that lifestyle choices such as smoking and alcohol consumption as well as age and general health can also affect how your body responds to Prelox (R). The great majority of men may feel a positive change initially taking four tables of Prelox (R) a day; however, after the first two weeks, you can reduce your intake to just one or two tables per day. How long does it take to see a Maximum Response? You should experience maximum sexual wellness after approximately four weeks of regular use of Prelox (R).

KEY HEALTH Holistic Health -7 Benefits of the Raindrop Technique

Provided by Medilink

Can a technique using pure, therapeutic essential oils really help reduce stress, alleviate pain, and ease emotional burden, sometimes in only one treatment? Yes it can! Here are some of the benefits of the Raindrop Technique: 1. Raindrop Technique helps reduce pain. The majority of people receiving this therapy report experiencing less pain, depression, anxiety and improved sleep. 2. Raindrop Technique helps reduce inflammation. Dozens of studies all over the world have identified several essential oils as being powerful anti-inflammatory agents. These include wintergreen, thyme and peppermint all used in the Raindrop Technique. 3. Raindrop Technique helps improve circulation. A 2004 Russian study tested 100 patients with known brain circulation problems and found that massaging the back of the

14

neck with essential oils ´resulted in a significant improvement of cerebral circulation and functional state of the brain’ 4. Raindrop Technique can considerably reduce the viral load on the body, Viruses are stored in the body – but certain essential oils can kill viruses. Some of the essential oils used in Raindrop are very effective anti-virals. 5. Raindrop Technique helps relieve Stress. An overwhelming majority of people receiving Raindrop treatments say their stress levels are dramatically reduced. The majority also report that the treatment makes them feel better and more positive and 99.9% would have another treatment. 6. Raindrop Technique helps improve immune function. A recent study at the University of Miami School Of Medicine examined the effects of massage therapy over a 5 week period and found that those who received massage ‘reported being less depressed, less angry, and having more vigour’. Natural killer cells and lymphocytes all increased from the first day of the study – resulting in a stronger immune system. 7. Raindrop Technique can facilitate the release of pent up negative emotions. Many people have profound experiences while being treated with an ‘Emotional Raindrop’ treatment – the practical application of the emotional treatment is the same as for a traditional treatment, but it is more likely to result in the release of traumatic stored memories because different essential oils are used. A Raindrop treatment consists of working on the feet, using a movement similar to that of reflexology. Then the various oils are applied to the client’s back. The oils do the work – so Raindrop can be performed by anybody – you do not need to be a therapist to do it! In short, the benefits of Raindrop Technique go well beyond the physical benefits of massage – they can improve every aspect of life physically, mentally and emotionally often relieving a variety of issues in a single treatment. It can not only relieve pain, and restore immediate physical well being, but it can set in motion the healing process that will last for weeks or even months. Suzanne Le Quesne is a Preferred Partner of ‘medilink’ and a well respected and highly qualified therapist and teacher specialising in diet and nutrition, and all holistic therapies. Suzanne is a Raindrop Practitioner and also teaches the technique. For more information on receiving a treatment or watching a demonstration of it, please call medilink on 952 93 38 76.

KEY HEALTH What to Expect When You Visit an Osteopath for the First Time In this edition we will look at what to expect when you visit an osteopath for the first time. (The information in brackets represents only a few examples in each case). Osteopaths follow a code of confidentiality so everything about your health and life history remains private. The first appointment can be up to an hour and is separated into various parts the first of which is general information gathering. Within the first minute or two of meeting, an astute osteopath will have observed things like your gait, posture, handshake, which side you favour or weight-bear on, what type of movements you avoid, your manner of speech and general posture etc. (for present pain, past injuries or trauma, any evidence of neurological deficit, weakness and coordination, Parkinson’s disease, previous mild strokes, depression etc ). An osteopath can also get information just from the appearance of your face and hands (including things like osteo or rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid dysfunction, anemia, heart and liver problems, hereditary syndromes and diseases and so on).

By Chris Howard beginning to construct a “working diagnosis” and beginning to think about what they may like to examine further (i.e. neck range of movement, or blood pressure etc) to prove or disprove some possible explanations for the patient’s discomfort (i.e. if you have headaches to the top or back of your head or on both sides or just on one side can have very different diagnosis and this will affect the osteopath’s thought process and type of further questioning and examination that follows. In the next issue the topic will be headaches.

Once as comfortable as can be (some patients can’t sit or stand very well when they first arrive!) the second part begins where personal details are recorded and questions about your work (standing or sitting for long hours, driving to visit clients, using machinery or the computer, amount of time on the phone, level of responsibility and stress etc) and hobbies, sports and relax time (walking, golf!, gardening, watching TV etc) all help to give the osteopath a good insight into what sort of things your body has been going through on a daily basis. The next part is the differential diagnosis or “nitty gritty” of the reason why the patient is seeking help, relief and advice. (Where and what type of problem/ pain or discomfort is it, - sharp or dull, - episodic or constant-localized or general how long have you had it - when and how did it start - did it start suddenly/accidentally or appear over time for no real reason - have you had it before - what aggravates or relieves it - does it affect your sleep – does medication help etc.). This is where the osteopath is starting to evaluate the patient and

KEY HEALTH Hivamat 200 Deep Oscillation Developed in Germany 20 years ago, the Hivamat 200 Deep Oscillation machine is now used in more than 70 countries worldwide. Deep Oscillation arrived in the UK 6 years ago. It is a revolutionary, technology based treatment which, when used with existing massage techniques, has proven physiological effects. Deep Oscillation has effects in skin, connective tissue, subcutaneous fatty tissue, muscle, and blood and lymph vessels. It provides an electrostatic, electromagnetic deep tissue massage applied ‘hands on’ through gloves. Gently travelling through a depth of 8-12cm through all the body’s tissue layers, Deep Oscillation has clinically proven effects in reducing pain, bruising, inflammation and swelling, improving trophicity and quality of tissue, and encouraging wounds to heal. Due to the non-invasive, non-traumatic, gentle nature of this therapy, it is possible to begin treatment almost immediately following injury and from day one post-operatively. Chronic conditions can also be worked upon with effective results. The unique selling point of this treatment is its diverse range of application: burns, ulcers, lymphoedema, general and aesthetics surgery aftercare, fibromyalgia and sports and occupational injuries. In contrast to externally applied, mechanical forms of therapy; Deep Oscillation takes place in the tissue itself, making it an unmatched treatment alternative for fresh trauma, postoperative, for acute pain and in the area of open wounds.

18

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

By Patricia Kaines

At present, the only therapist offering Deep Oscillation treatment on the Costa Del Sol is Patricia Kaines who, a firm believer in the effects of this treatment, explains that “the patented circuitry ensures the circuit is intermittent and not charging the body.” This gentle nature of the therapy has advantages for both the therapist - “very minimal pressure by the therapist is required to apply this therapy” - and the patient - “if a patient is already in pain this treatment will only ease this, and the little pressure involved makes for a comfortable experience.” Patricia practices Deep Oscillation using the Hivamat 200 - a patented machine, connected to both therapist and patient by separate connectors - which, through massage techniques learnt through her years in the profession, ensures tissue is thoroughly “kneaded” by mechanical force. The effect is not reduced when applying minimal external pressure thus enabling the application, for example in cases of acute traumata or pains, or in the vicinity of open wounds. A further advantage, albeit an unexpected one, is that Deep Oscillation has proven clinical effects on horses and dogs for a number of conditions including arthritis, ligament damage and post-injury. Patricia is a Manual Lymphatic Drainage specialist trained in the Vodder method and with over 12 years experience as a Massage Therapist offering Sports Massage, Aromatherapy, Hopi Ear Candling, Thai Foot Massage, Reiki.

KEY HEALTH Why Replace Missing Teeth? When a tooth is lost, far too often little thought is given to the consequences of this loss. Obviously if it is at the front of the mouth, then the thought of an embarrassing gap may motivate a patient to seek a replacement tooth, but if it is further back in the mouth very often it is ignored. The extraction of a tooth leads to bone loss in the vicinity of the extraction, often causing gum recession and root exposure of the adjacent teeth. Then the adjacent teeth may tilt towards the gap changing the bite and leading to food trap areas which can lead to decay. The opposing tooth may start to over erupt into the space, this can lead to problems in the opposing arch, and changes to the bite and sometimes pain in the jaw joint. The loss of teeth may lead to a patient changing their bite to compensate for the loss, which in turn can cause pain in the jaw joint. What are the Options? You can replace lost teeth with: 1. Dentures - removable plastic or metal frameworks carrying false teeth. Dentures can replace missing teeth, but have many drawbacks. They cover soft tissues and provide areas for food to trap, they can cause the loss of taste and have to be removed for cleaning. They can sometimes cause the

By Chris Weir, Sonrisa

loss of other teeth. If they are not cleaned thoroughly they can cause decay in the teeth they fit round. 2. Bridges - These are fixed replacement teeth. They are attached to your natural teeth and are fixed permanently. Normally you fit crowns to the adjacent teeth either side of the gap and carry the missing tooth from the crowns. Sometimes they are glued to your adjacent teeth, this saves crowning the teeth. They are made of porcelain and are very natural looking. The material of choice today is zirconium, because it is very natural, strong, and biocompatible. 3. Implants - They are replacement roots made of titanium which can be used to attach a missing tooth. A titanium screw-like root is screwed into the bone and left for a few months for the bone to integrate around them, then a porcelain crown can be attached to replace the lost tooth. What is important is that you should always try and maintain a complete arch of teeth with no gaps, to preserve a normal bite and function of your teeth. The replacement of choice would be the permanent solution, either a fixed bridge or an implant.

It protects and repairs the cell’s DNA hereditary transmission, it re-enforces the skin’s extra-cellular matrix (collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid), making the skin smooth, full, supple, moisturised and bright once again - qualities which are lost over time. Their home products, three of them, day cream “Cellular Regenerating Day with SPF 15 (57 Euros), for night, “Advanced Repair Cream” 61 Euros, and “Precision Touch” for all your lines as a serum, (57.50 Euros). They work best together. You will notice the difference immediately. SKIN is the biggest organ in our body. We should treat is with respect. My favourite is dry skin brushing – it’s cheap, natural and with excellent results for the regeneration of ski cells – old ones must be removed by exfoliation if you don’t do this, your skin is and feels dry and flaky all the time and moisturising creams don’t penetrate properly. Keeping your skin clean and hydrated will not only look good, but it accelerates any treatments and makes spray tanning last longer. When buying creams you should always look at is as an investment in yourself. Please see advertisements on pages 12 and 14 for what Genie can do for you.

KEY FEATURE Dario meets Welsh Tenor Stephen Lloyd-Morgan Dario talks to Stephen about his new shows “West End Musicals in Concert” & “Encore! -The 3 Tenors” I have known Stephen now for nearly 4 years, and having been blown away by his amazing talent; I have continued to follow his career very closely. While already juggling a professional singing career with a job as COO at a Wealth Management company in Gibraltar, this year he has also set about producing two new shows to delight us all here on the Costa del Sol. First he has joined forces with the three amazing voices of Adele Lee Peters, Paul Anthony and Gemma Lloyd to present ‘West End Musicals in Concert’. A Concert comprising highlights and show-stoppers from the best of Musical Theatre, and currently featuring a second half dedicated entirely to the multi-award winning show ‘Les Misérables’. I can report that since the shows started in March every show has been a sell-out to the extent that at some venues they were literally turning people away at the doors! The first half of the 90 minute show features show-stoppers from the very best of West End Musical Theatre, including songs from Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair, Evita, Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, Wicked, Joseph, Cats, Oliver and Chicago. The second half entirely dedicated to the award winning show Les Misérables, which also went down a storm with the audiences. Applause echoed throughout the show, culminating at the finale with standing ovations. Many commenting that the Costa del Sol has just never seen a show like it! It truly felt like the West End had been transported to us here in Spain!

If this was not enough to occupy Steve’s time, his second new show “Encore!” - The 3 Tenors, with Spanish Tenor Raúl D’Abreu & English Tenor Paul Anthony was especially set up following demand from several venues, and almost immediately is now also performing to full-houses! They sing the classic songs of The 3 Tenors including amongst others songs Granada, La Donna Mobile, Caruso, Funiculi Funicula, O Sole Mio, Besame Mucho, Volare, Somewhere, Brindisi & Nessun Dorma. Another breath-taking show, the superb calibre of which we have just never seen staged here on a regular basis before. Although Steve produces and head-lines in both new shows, they are however incredibly diverse productions. I asked Steve why he had decided to produce these two new shows! He told me “Since I moved to Spain 7 years ago I have primarily sung regularly as a soloist; while I will always love that, I do also miss being part of a team production and company of artists as I was often in the UK! Being from both a Musical Theatre and Classically trained background and experience, these two shows seemed to be the obvious choice! I am so pleased I have found such amazing and wonderful artists to be part of the productions and am very happy that the audiences appear delighted gauging from their response so far”. Both shows will continue at least twice a month and by all accounts now look destined to run throughout the rest of the year! KEY ASTROLOGY The Eclipse Season I recently gave an interview on Mijas International TV primarily to talk about the three eclipses that occurred in April and May this year, and this month’s article is intended to expand a little more about these natural cosmic events. We are all aware that each month there is a Full Moon followed two weeks later by a New Moon, however because of the Earth’s tilt, there are certain times of the year when the Sun, Moon and Earth are in alignment with each other and this is when we experience Eclipses. They usually come in pairs but in April and May this year we had three in a row! The energies or vibrations of full and new moons, especially eclipses, affect everyone whether they are aware of them or not. If you can, imagine symbolically the moon when it reaches ‘fullness’ can’t get any brighter so it releases light over the next two weeks until it’s ready to begin a new phase. I think this is symbolism at its best mainly because we can actually see it happening. So for us on Earth full moons symbolise releasing and letting go of what doesn’t work for us anymore and new moons symbolise new beginnings, a time to start new projects and go after what we want! On 25thApril the Full Moon lunar eclipse in Scorpio, the sign where emotions run deep and sometimes get ‘buried’, could have brought up suppressed emotions and with Saturn in the mix perhaps issues of security arose, exposing fears and vulnerabilities. As the full moon symbolises releasing or letting go, this was a time to dig deep and discard old emotional patterns and responses that no longer serve us. Many of you could have felt the effects to some degree but Scorpio birthdays between the 26thand 30th October would have felt them more acutely due to the eclipse occurring very close to their natal Sun. Then, on 10th May, we had a New Moon solar eclipse in Taurus the sign of values, possessions and security and this eclipse related to new beginnings in those areas. For example finding new ways to strengthen our sense of security, re-evaluate our relationship with money and possessions and discover what it is that makes us happy. Taurean birthdays between the 8th and 11th May will be particularly affected. With the eclipse falling very close to their natal Sun, they can expect major changes or a turn-around to take place in their life during the course of

this year and possibly 2014. Finally, a Full Moon lunar eclipse in Sagittarius on the 25th May completed this cosmic trilogy for 2013. Sagittarius represents the higher mind and this eclipse invited us to think in a broader way and use our intuition… a time to let go of old ideas, communication patterns and attitudes that no longer serve a purpose in our lives. Birthdays occurring between the 24th and 28th November would be most affected, again due to the eclipse falling very close to their natal Sun. Of course there are other considerations when looking at an individual’s natal birth chart, for instance the house in which the eclipse occurred will reveal much more about the area of life most affected. For readers who have any questions or would like to know more about these eclipses and their effects, or simply want to know more about astrology in general, please write to me at astrology4everyone@yahoo.co.uk. On a parting note, I’d just like to remind everyone that Mercury goes retrograde on the 26th June until 20th July! Briefly, Mercury represents all forms of communication and during a retrograde period (when it appears to go backwards in the sky) all kinds of miscommunications and breakdowns can happen! So if anything does need repairing or fixing, especially mechanical or electrical (not forgetting the computer and mobile!) then best get it sorted out before 26th June. It might have been hanging on and working for a while but there’s a good chance it could break down while Mercury is retrograde - no guarantees, but it might! Our minds, like our mechanical friends, are often over-worked and this three- week period is basically a way of getting us to slow down, reflect and make adjustments (and repairs) where necessary! For more information about Mercury retrograde see my article in the October 2012 issue of Key to Mijas Costa magazine. Alternatively if you would like a copy of the article by email write to me at astrology4everyone@ yahoo.co.uk. Wishing you all a wonderful summer and see you again in August … Janet

KEY FEATURE Excerpt from “Diary of an Accidental Psychic” The Healer and the Tree Some years ago, as Spirit began to pull me gently onto this path as a healer and spiritual messenger, I found myself out walking my dogs along a certain road leading out of our village. On this route is a magnificent olive tree. I’m sure it must be a couple of hundred years old and the sight of it truly captivated me. In spite of it not being in the most beautiful place – it is smack in the middle of a pavement − its magnitude and magnificence are nonetheless incredibly striking. It amazed me that someone had the sense to not cut it down but instead, to build the pathway around it. What was quite extraordinary is that the hairs on the back of my neck and head literally stood up on end every time I passed by this tree. The first time I experienced this curious reaction, I looked upwards, expecting to see electrical pylons overhead. Surprisingly, there was not one cable in sight. Why and how this could be happening really puzzled me; it was as if the energy was coming from the tree itself. One day, I decided to sit down on the large roots at the bottom. Instantly, I felt a beautiful warmth wash over my body. It took me a little by surprise but was so relaxing that I closed my eyes and sat there for quite a time. In no time at all, this became a daily ritual for me. My life was becoming much busier with many people coming to see me from all over the world, and I was providing many more healing sessions. After each busy day was done, I would pay a visit to ‘my tree’ and just sit and relax in its energy for a bit. I found these daily visits had started to reawaken my deeper love for − and connection with − Mother Nature. As this bond grew, I felt drawn to place the palms of my hands upon the tree – the energy felt incredible and I recognised the sensation immediately as that of healing. Admittedly, I felt a bit odd standing there with my hands holding onto a tree − I worried that in our little Spanish village, I might compromise my position and reputation as a ‘normal’ family man and that I’d be labelled a ‘hippy/ flower power’ or ‘tree hugger!’ In those early days, that kind of reaction bothered me. I’d try to look less conspicuous; make it seem as though I was waiting for someone or trying to balance myself as I tied my shoelaces. All that changed, though, when one particular day, a small, elderly Spanish lady passed by as I had my hands placed on the tree. I had no time to react and it was a wonderful surprise when she smiled widely and said, “Mucho energia!” (‘A lot of energy!’) I was gobsmacked as I giggled “Si, mucho!” back to her. Ever since then, I never worried about laying my hands on that tree ... and more magic was yet to come! One evening, just as I went to sit at the tree, I took a call from

30

a friend of mine. I began telling her how I was feeling quite run down after a number of weeks filled with healing sessions. “Mark, my dear, you need to find yourself a tree,” she said. “A TREE?” I replied with much surprise and curiosity. “Yes, Mark, a tree! Many Shamans believe that as they become more enlightened, they are led to a tree with which they form a spiritual bond − an agreement with one another. The Shaman agrees to take all the negative energy from anyone who is led to his or her door and in turn, the tree agrees to take all that negative energy away from the Shaman; it is a very beautiful ritual.” “Wow!” I said in total dismay, “you’re probably not going to believe me but I have found my tree! In fact, I’m sitting at my tree right now!” In that moment, everything made sense to me and I understood why I had felt drawn to this wonderful tree and created such a loving bond. Conclusion Rediscovering ‘ME’ through nature has not only touched my heart deeply, it has also enabled me to bring more balance into my life. That balance means I wake up without fear or worry and I simply let go of the ‘what ifs?’ which so often consume our minds. And so, my wonderful friends, the only possible conclusion is to present you with a gift. As I share my secrets with you in order to receive pure healing from Mother Nature, you will start to bring more peace and balance into your daily lives: find your tree and therefore find your balance. Dear friends I am so excited to share this Extract from my brand new book “ Diary of an Accidental Psychic “ I did it, one of my dreams came true, thank you all for your kindness, letters and support over these last years, put simply, I am living my dream. KEY FEATURE Making Scents

By Sue Cross

We are delighted to bring you the first excerpt from Sue Cross’ 2nd Novel “Making Scents”, which is the sequel to “Tea at Sam’s”. Chapter 1 “So did she die in the treatment chair?” Nina looked at her mother, startled. “Good grief. Whatever has happened now?” Harry braced himself for yet another of Kristin’s dramas. “It’s a long story,” Kristin replied casually as she ate her supper. It had started off as an ordinary day, but events had escalated as Kristin went about her business in The Works Beauty Salon that she ran in the heart of Cheltenham. The town, snooty and proud – some would say pretty – had a convincing facade of respectability. Although most of the houses had been converted to flats, the fronts retained an air of grandeur. But to the rear, a hodgepodge of extensions, peeling paint, scruffy courtyards and overflowing dustbins painted a different picture. Kristin’s was one of these typical Regency houses in a broad boulevard with established trees and uneven pavements. Elaborate black wrought iron balconies wrapped themselves around the large windows at the front of each house, giving an air of forgotten splendour. It was autumn and the falling leaves had left a thick copper carpet on the damp ground. Kristin Jones, her husband Harry and their two children enjoyed the space that their home provided, but it was hard to keep up with their mortgage payments, electricity bills and the financial demands of a family. At times, she felt guilty for persuading Harry to take on such a property, but she worked hard, economised and believed that eventually life would not be such a struggle. She had fallen in love with the house as soon as she had seen it after their return from living abroad. The main draw for her was the basement flat, which they had converted into a beauty salon. With undaunted optimism she believed that, one day, her business would provide enough for them to have a good quality of life so that she could buy the kids decent presents for their birthdays. Ever busy, Kristin had recently taken on another new venture. In a different part of town, Tash Simpson shivered as she leant against the wall of the tenement block. The withdrawal symptoms, like the start of a fever, had begun their per-

sistent torment. Her arm, a testament to the onslaught of the needle, throbbed and wept. She had just reached her seventeenth birthday, but did not celebrate. In the suburbs, Angela Lee stubbed out her cigarette into an overflowing ashtray as she gazed out of the window at the emptiness of her modern housing estate. She longed for the life she had left behind in California. Angela had recently read an advert in the local paper and decided to have a facial. It would fill in some time before her husband returned home from his demanding job. Should she drive? No, she would take a taxi – that would be more sensible. Aware that Mrs Lee would arrive soon for her treatment, Kristin beavered away behind the butterscotch-coloured Cotswold stone walls of her home. She tried not to spill the oil that she poured into bottles, which had been lined up with precision like soldiers. Immediately, the familiar aroma of sandalwood, jasmine and lemongrass hit her senses – musky, tangy, exotic. Outside, the pitter-patter of fat raindrops hammered against the sash windows. She struggled to shut the large, stubborn window overlooking the road and, as it closed, the rattling noise of the traffic instantly became muted and the air inside the room became thick and heavy with fragrance. The evening before, she had mixed a batch of her fragrant elixir and, with each drop of the carefully measured essential oils; she became excited by the thought that her dream of having her own skincare range might one day become a reality. Nibbling her lip in concentration, Kristin managed to decant the golden oil without spilling it. It was her lunch break, so she needed to be quick if she wanted to get the day’s orders for her oils out before the afternoon salon clients arrived. Good, there would be time for a quick sandwich if she hurried. Opening a cardboard box she assembled it, taped it and placed the oils inside, carefully filling around any gaps with packing materials and finally sealing the box with sticky tape. All she had to do was drive to the post office and that would be another consignment on its way to her unseen customers. MAKING SCENTS by Sue Cross is available as a paperback or ebook on Amazon. KEY FEATURE A Bit on the Side

By Joy Fahey

Dear Joy I’ve been seeing a married man for the last 12 months. When I met him he was very unhappy and sleeping in the spare room. As we grew into our relationship I began to realize what the problem was between him and his wife. Being a good listener, we talked a lot about their problems. He was trying to rekindle the relationship, but it was making him very unsure and confused. I suggested that he start sharing the marital bed again. He agreed to try, but the first time was a disaster and he said never again. However eventually they did get things sorted out and he’s started having sex with her on a more regular basis. I’ve told him that if he wants to end our relationship I’ll understand, but he’s adamant that he loves us both and won’t end either relationship. My problem is I’ve become obsessed with him. I helped him get back together with his wife and could kick myself for being so understanding. What should I do? Angela Dear Angela You’re having an affair with a man who has resolved his problems with his wife and is regularly making love with her and you’re wondering what to do! When a man and a woman love each other, normally they want to be exclusive so that the relationship isn’t just a bit on the side but a proper, full-blown togetherness. And that’s not what this

man’s offering. He wants to have his cake and eat it. Is this what you really want? Do you really think this situation will make you happy, unless you and your lover decide to do something different and he leaves his wife? You are setting yourself up for a lot of heart ache and pain. You’re been instrumental in putting them back together, surely you don’t want now to be the home breaker, carrying on with an adulterous, secretive relationship which constantly risks exposure and holds out no prospect of permanence or true intimacy. From your letter it doesn’t sound like that’s what you want. Since he’s now got everything he wants - the excitement of an affair and a loving wife at home - he’s not likely to want to change. So change will have to start with you. I know I sound harsh but you need to look at what you are doing and ask yourself some serious questions. If you play with fire you’re going to get burnt, so I do hope you’ll have the strength to walk away for your own sake. Assuming you believe you deserve a good loving relationship of your own, take a deep breath and move on. That way you’ll be free to find someone who truly is available in practical and emotional terms so you have a real chance of happiness. Give yourself some time and you’ll look back at this whole affair with great relief that you extracted yourself from it. I wish you well Joy

KEY PETS Looking after your Dog’s Health Many dog owners don’t understand fully the art of feeding their pet to keep them in a healthy state. The first rule is to worm your pet on a regular basis, not once in a while when you remember but approximately every 3 to 4 months. All dogs carry worms just like humans, but it is very critical in puppies, as they can’t suppor t an infestation of worms and this is the cause of many puppy deaths. It is impor tant to select the correct type of food, dry food in general is very expensive but you can find good breeder-type foods at reasonable prices. They are generally packed in plain paper sacks with a stick on label stating ingredients. Normally they are supplied in 20kg bags and in different grades for small, medium and large breeds which in addition has high energy for working and breeding dogs. The food is good quality and has been on sale here in Spain for many years. This is quality food, not like supermarket foods, which are notorious for producing kidney stones.

We have only kept the male due to his age, as at ten years it would have been difficult to relocate him. We will still breed Rottweilers, but production will be on a reduced basis.

It is very simple to check a dog’s general condition; the nose should be cold and damp, the coat should have a lustre and skin should be smooth without eruptions. The body should be firm, not fat, eyes should in general be

KEY PETS Nine Beautiful French Bulldogs Hello everyone, Summer is here at last and with it brings the birth of 9 beautiful French Bulldogs. We would like to welcome their father, grandmother and auntie, Harald, Kala and Molly, to the Frenchbullrus family and of course their owners, Helle and Kim, who have allowed us to bring Danish blood into our line. Harald is now the proud father to Lilly’s two boys, Bill and Ben, both chocolate masked fawns (both sold) and also to Cala’s litter of 4 boys and 3 girls and what a mix they were with fawns, creams and pieds. We are overjoyed that 4 of these were quickly reserved by the families on our waiting list. I also had my first doggie midwife duty and would like to say a big thank you to Sarah and Steve for the endless cups of tea for the all-nighter it turned out to be for their pedigree Shih Tzu, Poppy, who safely gave birth (it got a bit tricky at points) to 7 beautiful little puppies. YES, I do offer midwife service to a select few clients so if you would like more information, please just email me or call me for full details. We are also very excited to be soon offering Pet Protector tags that offer complete natural protection from fleas, ticks and mozzies (including sand fly) to your dogs and cats for up to two years and are safe to use on even very young puppies and kittens and around children. With over 10 years’ success and research, this product isn’t new by any means, rather that the public are becoming more aware and interested in natural means of treating their pets and the herbal and natural revolution is at long last reaching Spain. With well over 90%

proven protection, it’s offering the same cover as many leading chemicals like drops and collars. We also hope to soon be offering a complete website of all the natural remedies, meds, creams etc. that we use and recommend with all of the above being delivered directly to your door here in Spain. So we hope you have a good summer and remember, never leave your dog in a car, not even for a few minutes, and be aware that the floor can become very, very hot, burning your dog’s sensitive pads. We recommend you only walk your dog during the cooler morning and evening and avoid letting them walk over any metal grates on floor or sand. If you choose to wet your dog, do so before the afternoon and never use cold water as it can be very upsetting for some dogs. Much like people, some of us can think of nothing worse than jumping into a freezing cold pool, no matter how hot we get!!! Rather room temperature or cool water to save them from the shock factor!!! We use a paddling pool; the dogs love this. companies can now serve their customers on Mobile at a fraction of the cost. “There’s no longer a need to create an App for each phone OS and accessing the site is a seamless process for the user.” Said Geert “Our SmartFusionApp loads as a normal website, senses what phone is searching and delivers the relevant version accordingly; it’ll also detect whether your phone is set up for English or Spanish etc and deliver the relevant language”. According to Google, over 60% of searches now originate from a mobile device and only 40% from a PC or laptop. But here’s the key factor - only 2% of PC browsers actually take action, whereas from a mobile it’s a massive 34% - that’s 1 in every 3 visitors!! So ask yourself this…would you like to see 34% more customers contacting you? If so, then it’s time to Get Smart and get a Smart Fusion App. We did!

KEY COMPUTERS Internet Television,

Everybody Please Panic (Part 2)!!! As I was so rudely cut off and limited to 600 words in my last article, I did not have time to entertain you with all the technicalities and other genuinely interesting stuff within this up and coming market :) Technical Stuff, More of it! Hybrid Technology As you might gather from the title, this is a mixture of Satellite television and Internet Services. It works mainly in two ways. One is for you to receive your classic satellite television signal over the dish, but add to the experience with an Internet connection, normally decoding your signal via so-called card sharing. You can then watch all the channels in the satellite package without actually paying more than a fraction to your (illegitimate) provider of the codes from somebody else’s legal card. The combination could give you for instance all the Sky Movies and Sports channels for maybe £10 a month. Is it Legal? I Doubt it! The other way is to get content over the Internet from an official streaming service, either through catch-up services or through live streaming over the Internet of the same channels you would normally watch over the satellite, for instance the BBC IPlayer. This is no doubt legal, but very often limited to geographical areas. Normally you will be blocked when you are in a country where the television provider has not obtained the rights to broadcast the signal, but this can (as most things) easily be solved on the Internet. Through so-called VPN tunneling, letting the provider understand that you are actually in the correct country through simply going through a proxy server, which changes your Internet address (IP) before your box contacts the service provider, or simply just hiding your IP, you will very often be allowed to by-pass these relatively primitive security measures. Again, there are also huge differences in the quality of these services, as it all comes down to simple bandwidth. The more the worse, actually. You might even find a respectable provider one month, just to experience poor quality next month, as they have become too popular and thus clog up their own servers.

Hans Jeppe Nielsen, Manager WISE

You should be aware of the difference between “pure” streaming and streaming of the codes, which is an illegal practice. This system will suffer exactly as other satellite-based systems, when/if everything changes. When is Doomsday? “So when is it all going to happen? “, people ask me every day in my office. “I don’t know”, is the answer, but I am certain it will happen, as nobody ships a new satellite into orbit just for the sake of it. ASTRA, the company who has sent the new (and the old ones) satellite into space, has launched this service at a cost, which will be paid by the suppliers of television signals, which in my opinion means they will use this, and soon. There was a rumour saying Freeview would go in April and Sky in July, but there you go; just rumours. Many people have actually tried to call the governing English bodies and Sky to get information, but the answer is more or less “What’s it to you, anyway? You cannot see it in Spain as that would be illegal” Is it Legal? I mentioned in my former article, that the legal discussion had been going on ever since the manufacturers of movies, shows and other TV contents decided to divide the rights into geographical segments. My own personal opinion, for what it is worth, is that, instead of trying to impose artificial barriers on trade, the involved parties should instead set up the necessary framework for charging clients no matter where they are in the world based on actual consumption. Some sort of personalized card, where you are automatically charged for what you want to see on a worldwide basis, be it satellite or streaming, simply through a debit card you insert into an internationally approved standard box. As always, if you are utterly bored, come round to the offices and we will show you live the different options. Please also drop round if you have any queries or doubts. Again remember, WISE is now located on Avenida de España, 1, still in Calahonda, in front of the church in new and larger premises, you can find our advert below on this page, hope to see you soon.

KEY FINANCE Shopping Around For The Best Insurance Deal?

In the current financial climate many people are shopping around for the best deals on their insurance premiums. However, if you do shop around and find a cheap quote have you considered all the other aspects? It is little comfort in knowing that you paid the cheapest premium you could find if you did not also take into consideration other important factors. For instance, in the event of a claim, you need to be confident that the company you are insured with is reliable and will deal quickly and efficiently with your claim. You also need to be absolutely certain that the policy you ultimately take out is the right product for you personally. After all, if you buy a car for instance, you do not usually take into account just the price you are going to pay. You also look at such things as fuel consumption, comfort, reliability and after sales service. What about the service you receive after taking out an insurance policy? Would you prefer someone taking a personal interest in your problems? Most policies can be tailor made to take into account your own personal requirements. Often

By Rightway Insurance & Finance cheap premiums mean a low level of service and you could well be spending more time organizing the progress of your own claim and outlaying more money by having to make phone calls which can often be frustrating if there is a language barrier. You may initially find a cheap deal by shopping around but you may also have taken on board an expense you did not anticipate. Some insurance companies use Helpline telephone numbers which are costly and in the event of say a motor accident or breakdown, if you consider how long you may be on a mobile phone explaining perhaps where you have broken down, then the costs could be prohibitive. Don’t take the cheapest renewal option, take the most suitable option for your needs. Rightway Insurance is happy to discuss your requirements and find you the most suitable policy for your needs. In the event of a claim you can be confident that there is someone taking a personal interest. Make sure you consult us and we will make sure you are insured the Right Way.

KEY FINANCE Okay, Let’s be Happier! Well here’s a change... Last month the economic forecast for the UK was downbeat but sentiment and some data has ensured the situation looks a little rosier albeit the UK will still have a long road to travel to return to the pre-crisis peak. The Bank of England’s report did bring some better news for the economy as output at the end of this year is expected to be 1.5% higher than where we started the year. Inflation whilst expected to reach 3% before the year is out will probably fall to 2% in 2014 and if it does that, then it will be a year ahead of target. Quarter 1 for 2013 also brought about better news on the unemployment front with the number falling however, link that to the fact that the value of a pay packet in the UK is falling compared to inflation then consumer spending still has some way to go before a recovery takes place. Okay, let’s be happier! Rightmove tell us the average house price in the UK continues to rise and with the proposed government scheme to support mortgage lending and offer guarantees by having £12billion available starting 2014 then housing could be making a leap forward quite soon. In the Eurozone the recession continues and GDP quarter 1 does not make particularly good reading. In France output shrank by .2%, Italy saw a fall of .5% quarter on quarter, Cyprus fell by 1.3% and unfortunately, here in Spain the economy shrank by .5%.

By Moneycorp Thankfully, Germany again showed that it is stronger than the rest of Europe. Looking for brighter news across the zone came from the Industrial sector where production did rise by 1% in March and that was the strongest monthly increase since July 2011, the figure was backed up by a 3.8% rise in energy production. Try not to get carried away too quickly as the figure is still 1.7% lower than the same period last year. In the States the future does look brighter and the recent tax rises and spending cuts seem to have changed the forecast for the economy where the budget deficit has dropped to 4% from a previously predicted 5.3%. Compare that to the 10.1% in 2009, and you can see how their economy is moving forward. Inflation also remains low at 1.1%, so generally speaking consumers are starting to spend. Rates during the last month High Low £ to $ 1.5593 1.5163 £ to Euro 1.1918 1.1644 Euro to $ 1.3223 1.2804 So I agree it is still difficult to know when to transfer your funds and make the most of your money. That is why we recommend you ring Moneycorp on 952 587 657 and a call may save you quite a bit of money. Please mention Key to Mijas Costa when calling.

KEY LAW Five New Changes in Spanish Rental Law The Government has just approved a new law changing the previous regulations for tenancy contracts in Spain and it is expected to come into force very soon. I will refer to five changes made by this law that could be very important for you, either as a tenant or as a landlord.

By Jose Luis Navarro, Intercala’s Solicitor and Property Administrator

Let’s see if these changes are really effective! Taking all of this into consideration, being either an owner or a tenant of a rented property, take legal advice about the new, approved rules. Intercala’s solicitor and property administrator

1. So far, the new owner of a property has been obliged to respect the existing contract made by the previous owner. This is not going to be the same anymore. The new owner will be able to cancel the letting contract unless this contract has been registered in the Registry Office. To protect the tenant’s rights, it may be advisable to register the letting contract, which will mean full control by the government regarding the taxation of these rents. 2. After the tenant has lived in the property for six months, he will be entitled to cancel the contract just by letting the landlord know one month in advance, no matter what time period was initially agreed in the contract. In the same way, the landlord, after one year from the date of signing the contract, will be able to cancel it, letting the tenant know two months in advance, where the landlord or some close relatives need the house for their own use. 3. The amount of the rent can be revised by agreement between the tenant and the landlord, so there is no obligation anymore to revise the rents according to the rate of inflation. 4. The tenant can now renounce the first option to buy the house in the event that the property is sold. So far, the tenant had always this right no matter what was written in the contract. 5. There is a new legal regulation to speed up the eviction of tenants in cases where the contract should be dissolved for arrears of rental payments. The landlord could now start legal actions from the first monthly rent that is unpaid. In addition, the court procedure has been modified to make everything easier and faster.

KEY LAW Money Laudering

By Victoria Anzola, Iberdata21

The US Department of State has described Spain as “a major center of money laundering” in Europe, despite the country’s efforts to combat organized crime. Spain also remained “an important gateway” for drugs entering Europe from South America and North Africa. The report said money laundering activities were linked to drug trafficking and organised crime. Additionally, there was evidence too of tax evasion and financing for terrorism. “Proceeds continue to be invested in real estate in the oncebooming coastal areas in the south and east of the country, but criminal groups also place money in other sectors, including services, communications, automobiles, art work, and the financial sector,” the report published this week said. “Access in Spain to European financial institutions allows for the introduction of illicit funds into the global financial system with diminished scrutiny.” According to the report, Spain is a gateway for Moroccan hashish and Latin American cocaine, which enter the country and are distributed and sold throughout Europe. Despite this, Spain not only acts as a gateway for drug shipments, but also as a clearing house for illicit funds. The State Department report also found that tax evasion also continued to be a source of illicit funds in Spain. In a recent operation targeting a group of Chinese businesses, Spanish law enforcement discovered the systematic falsification of invoices for goods entering Spain, the sale of the goods, and an elaborate money laundering network that was used to repatriate the illicit proceeds back to the People’s Republic of China. The Spanish authorities estimated that the total amount of money laundered, and therefore associated tax revenue lost, was in the hundreds of millions of Euros. UK TOO According to the State Department report, the UK also remained “attractive” to money launderers because of the size, sophistication, and reputation of its financial markets and their leading role in global finance. Also on the rise are credit/debit card fraud, internet fraud, and the purchase of high value assets to disguise illegally obtained money. April 2013 - Six European Countries will take Action against Google for not Modifying their Data Protection Rules In late October 2012, agencies from Germany, Spain,

France, Italy, Holland and the UK gave Google four months to act in accordance with European standards and provide clear and complete information on the data collected and to show their commitment to respect the requirements of the European directive on data protection. The six European organisations have undertaken data protection action against Google for not responding to their demand to change the rules of confidentiality, stated the French National Commission on Informatics and Liberties (CNIL). The European countries have asked Google to provide clear and complete information on the data collected and to state the maximum conservation or purpose, or to show its commitment to respect the requirements of the European directive on data protection. The six agencies that received Google representatives on 19 March concluded: “This meeting has finished and not created any change”. Each national authority will pursue relevant research according to their own national legislation. Alluding to a simplification of its privacy policy, Google merged about 60 rules and regrouped them using information from its various services, such as mail service Gmail or Google+ social network, previously separated. For France in particular, Google has notified its decision to open a “monitoring procedure”. In Spain, the Spanish Agency for Data Protection (AEPD) has opened an investigation to examine whether the processing of personal data carried out by following the new Google privacy rules respect the European and Spanish law on data protection. The AEPD director sent a letter to Google CEO, Larry Page. The Spanish subsidiary is responsible for reporting on the research into the new privacy policy that Google introduced in March of last year. KEY FEATURE Energy Performance Certificates Become Obligatory in Spain The Spanish government has finally published the Royal Decree relating to a new legislation which will make it obligatory for all properties being rented or sold after the 1st of June to have “energy performance certificates”.The new decree which was published on the 5th of April is in line with the EU Directive on the Energy Performance of Buildings which was introduced in 2007 and part of an overall strategy to deal with climate change and makes energy transparent by “grading” the efficiency in buildings and homes. An Energy Performance certificate or Certificado de Eficiencia Energética (CEE) is a document which states the energy efficiency of a building based on the standardised way the building is used and number of ways in which the efficiency could be improved. The property is given a standard energy and carbon emission efficiency grade from ‘A’ to ‘G’, where ‘A’ is the most efficient and ‘G’ is the least. An EPC contains information on your home’s energy use and carbon dioxide emission as well as recommendations and suggestions to reduce energy use. It measures the efficiency of the property as a whole and all energy consuming elements that are integrated in it. Regardless of the final rating, improvements are not mandatory. However, the moment you advertise your property, you will be required to provide this certificate and failure to do so can result in a fine of €3000 to €6000. In addition, notaries are also obliged to request the certificate when signing over a property and tenants will be required to receive a copy of the certificate. According to Shane Freeman, General Manager of Artica Energy Performance, a Marbella based company which provides energy certifications, “The latest data published by the United Nations shows that Spain is number 20 in a list of countries by CO² emissions, producing just over 1% of emissions worldwide. This royal decree is essential in order to bring Spain up to European levels in the fight to reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. Energy efficient homes can reduce electric bills and will lead to a higher real estate quality and transpar-

KEY FEATURE Change to Passport Service for British Nationals

British nationals in Spain wanting to apply for a new passport are advised of an important change in the way they will need to make applications. All applications will now need to be sent directly to the Identity & Passport Service (IPS) in Belfast in the United Kingdom, instead of the regional passport processing hub in Madrid. All the necessary information about the new passport application process, including a new IPS overseas application form, can be found at www.gov.uk/overseas-passports. Andy Hamilton, head of the regional passport processing centre in Madrid, says: “In real terms, all that this means is that British nationals living in Spain will now need to send their applications to a different address.” “Current passport processing times remain the same. If you are renewing your passport, you should allow at least four weeks from the date the fee is taken and all the correct

By the British Embassy, Madrid documentation has been received.” “If you are applying for the first time or you are replacing a lost or stolen passpor t, you should allow at least six weeks.” The only other change is that the current passport helpline call charges are being removed. Instead of paying for a premium rate phone line, customers will now only have to pay for the cost of a call to the UK. British nationals who lack internet access or want advice are able to call the IPS Customer Service Centre on +44 (0) 300 222 0000. People who need to travel urgently but whose normal passport is unavailable should contact their nearest British Consulate via 902 109 356 or email info.consulate@fco.gov.uk. Your local Consulate may be able to issue an Emergency Travel Document to help you travel.

KEY NEWS AGE CARE

is looking for a special type of volunteer for their Advice Centre who can give their time, once a week from 10 am to 2 pm to offer information to the local English speaking community. Many English speaking residents visit our friendly Advice Centre in Doña Lola for information on, for example, how to access the Spanish health system or where do they go for their NIE and are lost or maybe frightened because they don’t speak Spanish. That’s why it would be helpful to be familiar with the Spanish system – but full training will be given. Someone who can speak English and Spanish and have administration and computer skills would be perfect. More important is that they should have been living in Spain for a while and be familiar with the bureaucracy which can be so confusing! Age Care is a registered charity entirely run by volunteers whose aim is to help the local older English speaking community on the Costa del Sol from Benalmadena to Marbella and as well as collaborating with other charitable organisations along the Costa, we also work closely with the Foreigners Department in La Cala. The Advice Centre is located at Doña Lola, Calahonda, Mijas Costa – next to Devine’s Restaurant and on the 220 bus route. It is open Monday to Friday, 10 am to 2 pm and a Coffee Morning is held every Tuesday at 11 am. Why not pop in and talk to us? Volunteers are particularly needed over the Summer period – so if you are staying in Spain this Summer and commit for even just one day a week to

KEY NEWS at The Wellness and Beauty Centre in Fuengirola, on the Coin Road not far from the Miramar Centre. The facility has already proved to be successful, so booking is essential. Lynda Martin-Campbell who runs The Wellness and Beauty Centre at Tamisa invites prospective clients with the advert on page 20 to partake of a glass of wine and to take a look around. A quick call to Reception on 952 585 988 or to Lynda herself on 608 675 081 will secure you an appointment, either to discuss the benefits of a detox by Colonic, or many other treatments on offer. Colonic Hydrotherapy was the method used by Ancient Egyptians in their search for wellness and treatment of disease, so it is by no means a new treatment. Food and lifestyle can wreak havoc on our digestive systems; the cleansing of the colon acts as a complete detox. Debris in the colon can become impacted and putrefied, allowing toxins to re-enter the body through the colon walls, which causes Toxemia. This can be the cause of many modern-day diseases; bowel cancer being the second largest cancer in the modern world today. The Colonic Room uses the Dotolo Toxygen BSC-UV, the latest equipment from Dotolo Research Corporation, the largest research corporation into colon health and bowel cancer. On your first visit to the Colonic Room a lifestyle questionnaire regarding any symptoms that could benefit from the treatment will be discussed, including tiredness, lack of libido, headaches, mood swings, irritability, lack of concentration or depression. A treatment plan can be discussed and dietary advice given if required. Lynda Martin-Campbell is looking forward to welcoming you.
