Well, they say it is autumn and there are only just over two months to go until Christmas Day but as I write this, it is still 30 degrees outside - not bad for mid-October! As usual, lots for you to enjoy again in this issue. Marbella Beauty Academy gives a preview of the autumn beauty trends which you will find on page 8 and this includes the colours and hair styles for the festive season. We would very much like to thank Fer Diomedi for providing us with our autumn front cover. We thought you might like to know a little bit more about the girl behind the face on the front cover, Veronika Balint, so please go to page 27 for more. We like to think that we cover a variety of interesting topics in the magazine and so on a completely different note, we deal with funeral plans on page 41which I am sure you will find extremely informative. We were honoured to be invited to one of the first wine pairing

KEY BEAUTY Non-Surgical Facelifts
By Tracy, Hair Magic
NON-SURGICAL FACE LIFTS - with the Genie Machine In this issue I am going to tell you all about our non-surgical face lifts. Here are most of our FAQs. HOW DOES IT WORK? It works on a deep muscle build. We use pads on your face
and pass an electric current into the muscle. It’s called the Baxendale wave and was first created in university in the UK to treat Bell’s Palsy and worked so incredibly well that they decided to use the Baxendale wave in the beauty industry. By working the muscles in your face they expand and will give your face a slightly fuller look and the muscles will harden a little too, just the same as when you work your body in a gym. DO YOU USE NEEDLES? No, absolutely not. We only use face pads. WILL I SEE RESULTS IMMEDIATELY? Yes and your muscles carry on contracting for 24 hours so you will see an even bigger difference the next day. The Genie Machine is 1,000 times stronger than any other nonsurgical face lift on the market. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE AND WILL IT LAST? Each treatment only takes about 25 minutes from start to finish. However, there is no point in only having one treatment. You will need to build the muscle. We recommend 10 treatments to get a really good lift. If for instance you are going on holiday and want to look fresher faced and younger, 5 treatments will do that, but it won’t last as long. When you have finished your course of treatments, we advise you to come in once a month to keep your lift looking good. HOW MUCH WILL IT COST? We have dropped the price in the last two years because of the recession. If you book a course of 5 treatments, the price is 22.50 Euros per session, a total of 112.50 Euros. If you book a course of 10, the price comes down to 20 Euros per session, i.e. 200 Euros for the course. A trial of only one session is 12 Euros. If you have any more queries of just need some advice about your hair, call us at HAIR MAGIC for a FREE consultation.

KEY BEAUTY What’s Trendy in Hair & Make-Up This Season? Marbella Beauty Academy is very excited to have been accredited with the international VTCT qualifications in Hairdressing which, taken along with C.I.B.T.A.C and A.B.T Beauty and Holistic courses, opens up many job prospects for our students. Our tips on what’s trendy in Hair & Make-up this season: Along with changing your wardrobe, changing your cosmetics for autumn and winter is a great way to fit right in with this season. The winter is not all about dark colours, it is more about how you take care of your skin and how you can really bring out natural beauty. Vampy lips, Wine-stained lips, Pink lips, Plum lips and dark berry tones, with a natural eye make-up, look wonderful teamed up with the same colour on nails. Nude lips are perfect with a matt finish base and a simple flick liner or smokey eyes. Rose is a soft pink that adds gentleness to your face. It is great to wear in the autumn as a lipstick because it softens the face and creates a nice feminine glow for a youthful

touch. Plum is a deeper colour of purple that won’t seem so bright and overbearing and it’s super fashionable too! Fashion wise, the 60’sTwiggy look is still in, black liner in the crease of the eye, or black liner dots under the lower lashes for a monochrome look is super trendy! The flick is here to stay and practice makes perfect! Metallic shadows with matching metallic nails are great for the Christmas party! 50 shades of Grey!, black and wine colours are in for nails and on the tip only looks even better, along with the colourful skittles look and we always love the French manicure for a clean healthy and classy look. Berry shades look gorgeous against a navy blue background. Hair braiding is still very much staying in fashion right through to the summer of 2014. Braid the crown (the 20´s look), or just an odd braid in long hair, scruffy fishtail plaits and the low pony tail is a must for long hair. The low ponytail held in place with a wide piece of leather was popular with designers on the New York runways. Call MBA for an interview or more information on courses starting on November 4th.

KEY HEALTH What Happens During the Physical Examination? In this edition we will see what happens during the Physical Examination which follows the differential questioning/ history taking when you first visit an osteopath (which was discussed in the previous edition). Once the osteopath has a “working diagnosis” or a possible reason for the cause of your pain or discomfort from questioning you about it, the osteopath will then need to prove or disprove to themselves the possible diagnosis by examining you physically. You will normally be asked to remove some of your clothing and perform a simple series of movements whilst standing. The osteopath will be looking for things like one shoulder

higher than the other or collapsed arches in your feet, rotation through your spine, more muscle bulk on one side than the other, looking to see if you have scoliosis (lateral curves) of the spine and the general anterior/posterior angles and position of your neck and back in relation to each other and how far you can turn and so on. Once the patient is lying down, the osteopath will then use a highly developed sense of touch called palpation to identify any points of weakness or excessive strain throughout the body and examine things like your neck, joints and back whilst you’re not weight bearing. Various tests may be done to check your range of passive joint movement (i.e. the osteopath moves your arm without you using your muscles to check if the problem could be muscular or in the actual joint itself) or reflexes and power/sensation testing to check your neural system to see whether the problem is specific to one nerve or a group of nerves or coming from your spine or even from the higher centres of your brain. Things like your blood pressure, pulse and heart sounds and anything like varicose veins and cold hands and feet could be noted to help in diagnosis. Inflammation often gives off a lot of heat and so helps to locate the problem as will tight or contracted musculature around the area of pain. Often the problem is not where the actual pain is! At this point an osteopath will then normally discuss his findings with the patient with a reasonable explanation (diagnosis) as to why he/she would benefit from treatment and an idea of how many treatments it may take and what sort of level of daily function can be recovered (prognosis). It may be that the patient is referred for further tests at this point such as x rays to confirm or help with diagnosis for the benefit/safety of both the patient and the osteopath. If a series of treatments is agreed, the osteopath will normally have a wide range of approaches available from cranio-sacral, massage, articulation and thrust to name but a few to alleviate the pain. Advice on posture at work and at home, number of pillows, phone answering, exercise and sports do’s and don’ts and self medication/icing and so on, forms part of the treatment.

KEY HEALTH Medicare from a Client’s Perspective I was delighted to meet up with Julia over a cup of coffee and to discuss life in general with her as well as the caring service that she receives each week from Medicare. Julia is a well educated lady who had been married to her husband, John, for 45 years. They had a very happy life together and a very close relationship. They moved to Spain some 11 years ago as the climate was beneficial to John’s health. They had always done everything together and John took care of financial matters, the driving, DIY and just about all of the practical chores whilst Julia took care of the home. John’s health deteriorated and after an admission to the Costa del Sol hospital was discharged home with the assistance of Medicare to provide his palliative care. Unfortunately John passed away soon afterwards. Fortunately Julia had already established a close relationship with the team at Medicare and they were on hand to assist Julia with every aspect at this difficult time. They liaised with the family, the local Spanish Doctors and the funeral directors; in fact they took care of absolutely everything. As was to be expected, Julia went into meltdown after losing John, she loved living in Spain but was unsure if she would be able to continue on her own. Once again the staff at Medicare nursed her through her bereavement and grief with unswerving patience and have in time put the sparkle back into Julia’s eyes.
By Key to Mijas Costa
Julia has dipped her toe into the waters of all manner of new adventures that she had never had dreamed about and her mind is now open to all sorts of suggestions that may enrich her day to day life. Julia tells me that she is even able to visit her children and grandchildren thanks to Medicare who accompany her on the flights to and from the UK. Julia now receives regular support from the team at Medicare and is able to make the most of her life with their support. I asked Julia how she would best describe the assistance she receives from Medicare, she said that the top of her list would be caring and discreet, John was the original client and now that has been extended to me, allowing me to continue to enjoy my life with support. Julia’s last words to me were “if only Medicare was a tablet that you could take 3 times a day”. Established since 2001, Medicare is a fully regulated and legal care provider with a proven track record as well as an excellent reputation for delivering care that is client focused and needs led. Our team consists of British Trained and Registered Nurses along with Qualified Carers with a diverse skill base, who pride themselves on care delivery at the highest level. KEY HEALTH Why Replace Missing Teeth? With all the teeth present in the mouth, there is stability. Teeth stay in place due to a complex series of pressures contacts and eruption forces. Loss of a single tooth is often due to either trauma, decay or gum and periodontal disease. When the tooth is lost and is not immediately replaced, the surrounding bone will begin to resorb or shrink in the space where the tooth is lost. With no adjacent support the neighbouring teeth will begin to drift towards the space. The drifting of one tooth may lead to the movement of several teeth resulting in a significant amount of movement and often changes in the bite. The opposing tooth may start to over erupt leading to food trapping, root exposure, sensitivity and loss of space for a replacement tooth. Problems associated with tooth loss: 1. loss of chewing efficiency 2. over eruption of opposing teeth 3. drifting of adjacent teeth 4. food trapping 5. decay & periodontal disease 6. altered bite (can lead to pain and clicking of the jaw) 7. over loading of existing teeth to compensate 8. collapse of the cheek into the space leading to cheek biting 9. aesthetic changes What are the options ? 1. Partial dentures These can be provided as immediate replacements but will have to be replaced later due to the loss of bone and shrinkage of the soft tissues. You won’t stop the bone loss, but you will prevent the teeth from drifting and tilting, and stop
14

the over eruption of the opposing teeth. 2. Bridgework By providing a permanently fixed bridge you will preserve the equilibrium of the teeth and bite. You will need to make a temporary bridge for 2/3 months to allow for the healing of the tissues, then provide a permanent fixed bridge afterwards. This will give a more aesthetically pleasing result and will be much better tolerated by the patient, than a partial denture, but you will need to crown the adjacent teeth. 3. Implant A titanium screw-in root is placed in the lost tooth space and then a crown is attached to the implant later, normally 6 months afterwards. This is to allow the bone to integrate round the implant before loading it. An implant should be placed as soon as possible to prevent the loss of bone at the extraction site. The drawback of the implant is there has to be enough bone depth for it to be successful. The loss of a single tooth can lead to a number of problems apart from the obvious aesthetic changes, it can cause pain, discomfort, changes in the bite and lead to the loss of more teeth later. A partial denture will provide a reasonably satisfactory result, but may be difficult to tolerate, many end up in the bottom drawer at home. The permanent bridge will be far better tolerated and give a very pleasing aesthetic result, so will the implant, but it will take longer to complete and is conditional on there being sufficient bone to support it. Doing nothing is not a very good option, and you may regret it later when it is too late.

KEY HEALTH Bio-Selenium + Zinc
for a Healthy Immune System What is Selenium? Selenium is an essential trace element which is important to human health. It is an essential component of the key antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidise which acts together with other antioxidant compounds to protect the body from the effects of damaging free radicals. The most abundant sources of selenium are Brazil nuts, seafood, meat and poultry. People at risk of deficiency include those with a restricted food intake (slimmers, vegans, vegetarians etc), pregnant women and those living in areas with selenium depleted soil. It is commonly recognised that soils in many areas of the world, including the UK, are deficient in selenium, often as a result of intense farming. Selenium levels are further depleted by smoking, alcohol intake and chronic illness. What do you take Selenium for? Selenium has various well documented benefits; however it is mainly important to help maintain a healthy immune system and protect cells from free radical damage. It is also effective in supporting a healthy cardiovascular system and inhibits the effects of heavy metals such as mercury (amalgam fillings). In addition, Bio-Selenium+Zinc maintains normal fertility in men (healthy sperm motility) and healthy thyroid function. Which is the best form to take? The greatest levels of bio-availability (absorption) are obtained through taking selenium in its organic form. The average intake of selenium in the UK was estimated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food in 1994 to be approximately 31mcg/day. Most experts now agree that the optimum intake of selenium should be between 100 and 400mcg/day. Bio-Selenium + zinc contains vitamins C, E and B6 and the mineral zinc. Vitamin C must be obtained from the diet as it is not manufactured in the human body. It acts synergistically with Vitamin E which, in turn, enhances the effect of selenium. Vitamin C promotes a health heart, healthy gums and healthy immune system. Levels of vitamin C are reduced by smoking, drinking alcohol and by certain drugs such as anticoagulants, antidepressant or oral contraceptives. The main function of Vitamin E is as an antioxidant and it can help support the integrity of cell membranes. Vitamin B6 helps promote the conversion of food into energy and supports normal function of nerves and muscles.
By Anni’s Vital Shop
How much should you take? Pharma Nord recommends 1-2 tables/day. Are there any contra-indications? There are no known drug interactions or contra-indications. Evidence of toxity occurs at intakes over 900 mcg/day. Pregnant and lactating women and those on medication should seek professional advice prior to taking nutritional supplements. What are free radicals? Free radicals are harmful, aggressive molecules that attack our body cells. They play an active role in over 200 illnesses, including heart disease and cancer. Environmental pollution, tobacco, alcohol and UV rays also form free radicals. Unless we have sufficient amounts of antioxidants to intercept and neutralise the excess free radicals in our body, our cells being to deteriorate.

KEY FEATURE Dario Meets Artist Peter Stanway I first made contact with Scottish artist, Pete Stanway, in the Tamisa Golf Hotel, where he was holding an exhibition of his stimulating and unusual paintings. I found myself facing a tall, powerfully-built man, with longish grey hair, a friendly face with the warm, expressive eyes of a man of integrity that often emerges from a life of adversity. My first impression was he was straight from Hollywood movie versions of Rob Roy or Braveheart. We immediately felt a rapport that must have come from our Glasgow upbringings and education, which I often jokingly declare as, “The Gorbals Academy for Young Gentlemen”. Without further ado, I asked him to tell me about his life and experiences to date and he began his amazing story. “My desire to journey started as a young boy. I even dreamed of going on journeys. I started hitch-hiking around the UK at the age of fourteen and on my sixteenth birthday, I was waiting at the ferry point in Dover, England armed with my first passport that would allow me to journey throughout Europe. Over my teenage years, I journeyed through Belgium, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France. My journey into adulthood took me to the Glasgow School of Art where I studied Fine Art and Mixed Media. I was disillusioned there by the pervading apathy among the students. After leaving Art School, my life journey took me into a career as a photographer. I set-up my first professional studio in Glasgow and quickly progressed from general photography to working mainly with the pop/rock culture in the UK and with the mainstream London-based music tabloids; Sounds, Melody Maker, Smash Hits and Noise, etc., often covering their main feature for the front and centre pages. Altogether, I worked with over five-hundred different bands including some famous bands like Spandau Ballet, U2, Simple Minds, Haircut 100, The Bluebells, Altered Images, Culture Club, Toyah, UB40, Marillion, The Clash, The Jam and many Indie and punk bands like The Fall, The Exploited, Blancmange, The Anti-Nowhere League, The Birthday Party, The Associates to name a few. backed exhibitions of my photographs from that time in galleries in Scotland and England, it was time for a change. I arrived in Cordoba, Spain in 1986 and spent over six years living and journeying extensively throughout southern Spain. I lived in Cordoba, Alhaurin el Grande, Torremolinos, La Carihuela, Antequera, Fuengirola, Marbella and Mijas. During that time I took up fine art again. I had exhibitions in La Victoria and in La Conquista in the province of Cordoba. In 1993, the journey of my life took a completely new direction. I trained for Christian ministry and in I997 until 2005 I worked as a full time minister in a church back in Glasgow. During that period, I formed a Christian charity. The work of the charity allows me to journey to and through countries all over the world; Nepal, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Pakistan, India, Israel, Philippines, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, USA, Denmark, Holland, France, Italy and Spain. * For twenty years, or so, I put aside my art but I believe that with this touring exhibition another journey has begun and I am excited! I am planning that I will travel extensively visiting many places along the Mediterranean coasts of Spain, France and Italy. I am fascinated by how the world around us is in a constant state of flux; by how it is forever changing, quickly or slowly, by nature and / or by man’s intervention. I am working from source images that no longer exist. They are transitory, captured for a moment in time, giving us a fleeting glimpse of something that we may otherwise miss. I would love you to accompany me on this journey. Please use the poems that complement the images. You will find the poems alongside the description of each image in my shop (tab above). The poems are portals to help you to climb inside the images to have a look around.” *Read my full autobiography, Wee Boys from Glasgow Don’t Cry. PINK & BLUE BALL The annual Pink and Blue Ball was held at the stunning El Oceano hotel, as always the perfect venue for this annual event, held on 10th October. Even in this deep recession there was a full house. The event kicked off with a Champagne reception followed by an excellent dinner of Salmon Roulade, main course Beef Wellington and Eton Mess for dessert. The drink was also flowing all night and the guests thoroughly enjoyed the top class entertainment provided by Mike Sterling (West End star of Phantom etc), Pete Nabarro who is a Neil Diamond tribute act, a Spanish duo of Guitarist and Singer. This was followed by Zoe Louise, the ever popular Rob Stevens from the Manhattan Show Bar, and right into the early hours when one of my own particular favourites, the electric violinist Quike Navarro, had the crowd up on their feet and begging for more! The auction was hosted by Poppa Jay who made sure the
audience gave generously to this worthy cause. At the time of going to print, the event had raised more than 20,000 Euros and climbing, so catch the Positively Pink Facebook page to see the final tally. If you would like to hold an event at your venue to raise funds for this worthy cause, then please contact Positively Pink. Last, but by no means least, additional volunteers are urgently needed for the Positively Pink & Blue Committee so that events for next year can be organised as smoothly as possible. Again, if you can help in any way, contact details are below. www.positively-pink.com info@positively-pink.com Facebook: Positively Pink Spain Twitter: @positivelypink1 Hope to see you all again next year.

“It’s only me. What’s that racket?” Fran whispered, stifling a giggle. “Shh. It’s my client – sleeping beauty! She smells of cough mixture. Perhaps she’s had an allergic reaction,” Kristin grinned, her dark eyes twinkling with amusement. “She’s probably been hitting the sherry. Would you like a cup of tea?” “Mm, yes please. I’ll just have time before I take the mask off her.” Fran put her bag in the cupboard under the reception desk and went into the kitchenette to put the kettle on. Going back into the reception area, she was greeted with sounds resembling an ancient vacuum cleaner and started to giggle again. “Here’s your tea. She’s still asleep I hear.” Fran handed Kristin a mug. “Yes, but not for much longer. She’ll have to wake up when I take the mask off. Which is about now. It’s hectic this afternoon and… ” “Two new clients as well. Why do you think business is so brisk at the moment?” “Probably those adverts in the Echo. It’s best to have a small one in each week to keep the impetus going rather than a large advert every now and then. It’s called the drip effect. Talking of which, I mustn’t forget to give Mrs Lee her umbrella back.” Kristin gulped her tea, and then glanced at her watch. “I’d better take the mask off now – here’s your lady.” The door opened and a regular client came in, looking furtive as she glanced behind her. She removed her dark glasses, wiped them on her beige jacket and composed herself. “Hello, Mrs Smith,” both therapists greeted her. “Hello. Am I late?” “No, you’re fine. Come on through.” Fran ushered her client into the other facial cubicle that doubled up as one for electrolysis. Mrs Smith had been plagued with facial hair since her hysterectomy and had the habit of talking with her hand over the lower half of her face as if she was sharing a secret. Kristin put a tape of soothing music on the player, fetched a bowl of warm water from the bathroom and made her way back to Mrs Lee, who was still snoring. Kristin felt sorry for the woman’s husband. As she started to rinse off the mask, she was surprised that her client did not wake up. Sprinkling some rose toner onto two pads of cotton wool, she wiped the product over Mrs Lee’s face and throat. Suddenly the snoring ceased.

It was now time for the last part of the facial – the application of the moisturiser. “Wake up, Mrs Lee. Your facial’s over.” Kristin massaged the product into her client’s face as she spoke but there was no response. Kristin levered the client’s couch into an upright position. “Wake up, Mrs Lee, wake up,” her voice was now louder, insistent. Mrs Lee was still dead to the world, her head lolling to one side, her mouth open. ‘Oh, God, what if she is dead?’ Kristin thought to herself in panic. Just as she was wondering what to do next, she heard her next client come into the salon. Then Kristin had a brainwave. Taking an aerosol of spring water, she gently sprayed it onto the client’s face as she urged, “Wake up, Mrs Lee.” By now Kristin’s heart was thudding as she tried to remember how to perform artificial respiration. Was it her imagination, or did Mrs Lee look a tad paler? And did she detect a slight blue tinge around the mouth – a sure sign of heart failure? Should she take her pulse? Or use the mirror test? Kristin sprayed the client one more time and shook her slightly on the shoulder as she considered calling for an ambulance. This had the desired effect and Mrs Lee opened one eye. It was a start. “Wake up.” Kristin sounded shrill. Although relieved that Mrs Lee had not died, she was concerned that although having made this much progress her client might drop off again. Mrs Lee jumped, opened both eyes wide and drawled, “Nearly fell asleep then.” “Er, yes, nearly fell asleep.” Kristin heaved her client out of the chair and helped her on with her blouse. “Do you feel all right?” “Sure. Never better. Why?” “Oh, you know – just wondered.” Kristin tried to sound nonchalant. She aided Mrs Lee to the reception area, glad to see that her next client had disappeared into the bathroom. “How much do I owe you?” Mrs Lee slurred. “That will be five pounds, please.” “I seem to have left my pocket book at home. I owe you five quids.” And with that Angela Lee staggered out of the salon, forgetting her umbrella. MAKING SCENTS by Sue Cross is available as a paperback or ebook on Amazon. KEY ASTROLOGY Astrology & Health Not many people realise that our health can be tracked using astrology! The planets and zodiac signs each have a particular part of the body that they influence through their rulership and just armed with this information can reveal why we may suffer more illnesses of one kind than another. For example Taurus can be prone to throat problems (throat and neck) while Gemini can be prone to respiratory problems (lungs). The following chart lists all 12 zodiac signs and those parts of the body that each sign rules. See if you recognise anything on the list in relation to your own sun sign, and if you know your Moon and Ascendant signs, then check these out too as they are just as important where health is concerned. Sun Signs Part of Body Ruled Aries Head, Face Taurus Throat, Neck Gemini Lungs, Arms, Hands Cancer Breast, Chest, Stomach Leo Heart, Spine Virgo Intestines, Pancreas Libra Loins, Kidneys Scorpio Reproductive Organs Sagittarius Thighs Capricorn Knees Aquarius Ankles, Blood Pisces Feet Medical astrology, as it is now known, has been around for thousands of years. cients with a way to identify bodily strengths and weaknesses and reveal a person’s proneness to a specific illness or a nutrition deficiency. Using a personal horoscope to study one’s health can be a revelation to many people as well as confirmation of what they already know about their state of health. While astrology in this context is not meant to diagnose disease - that can only be done by a medical doctor - it is a useful tool in gaining insight into personal health issues. For those interested in alternative therapies, there are specific homeopathic cell salts and Bach flower remedies associated with each sign; for example the cell salt Kali Mur is recommended for Gemini and Nat Sulph for Taurus. If you would like to know more about cell salts/alternative remedies and their uses in relation to health issues specific to your Sun sign, write with your request to the address below and I’ll forward the information. Understanding one’s own birth chart, being able to read what the planets signs and houses say about you is the first step to understanding what makes you tick, and by learning a simple set of keywords it is actually possible in a short time to be able to make a basic astrological interpretation. In the New Year I shall be holding a Seminar in Central Fuengirola and for anyone interested in learning a little more about astrology, come along as this will be a good place to start. KEY SPORTS England V Scotland & World Athletics ENGLAND v SCOTLAND 14 August After 11 minutes James Morrison sent a low dipping shot through a cluster of players to give Scotland the lead. Joe Hart may have been unsighted but should have saved it. England started with the reserve full-backs, Leighton Baines and Kyle Walker. A start too for Jack Wilshere. Ex Leeds man, Robert Snodgrass, played some neat left peg passes for Scotland. ‘Wayne Rooney appears to be marked out of it at the moment. There is no room for manoeuvre,’ remarked an observer. Theo Walcott crossed but Tom Cleverley could not convert even after 2 attempts but on 28 minutes he found Walcott with a clever through ball. Walcott turned inside past Scott Brown onto the left foot and buried to level it up for England. A Wayne Rooney drive flashed just wide on 33 minutes and he had the ball in the net minutes later after a clever chip by Gerrard but is offside. Early in the second half, Kenny Miller fired Scotland ahead before Danny Welbeck headed England level again 4 minutes later. LAMBERT SCORES WITH FIRST TOUCH – 2 minutes 45 seconds after coming on, 31-year- old Southampton striker, Rickie Lambert, came on for his first cap. And on 70 minutes he powerfully headed home off a Leighton Baines corner. Bizarrely, he then managed to miss an open goal, hitting a post but England won an entertaining match by 3 goals to 2. ENGLAND v MOLDOVA September 6th With Wayne Rooney out with a gashed head sustained in training following a collision with Phil Jones and strikers such as Jermaine Defoe and an in-form Daniel Sturridge injured, it meant a start and a 2nd cap for Southampton’s Rickie Lambert. A low 20-yard drive into the corner by Steven Gerrard gave England the lead after 12 minutes. The lead was doubled on 26 minutes when Theo Walcott’s shot was only parried and Lambert was in the right place at the right time to head in the rebound and his 2nd goal in 2 games. Welbeck made it 3 just before half-time after carelessly being booked for kicking the ball after the whistle had been blown which kept him out of the Ukraine match. Moldova, modest opposition at best, were never really a match and the second half was largely dull. Welbeck made it a brace after a nice pass through by Rickie Lambert, chipping it past the keeper and had a couple of chances to complete his hat-trick. Milner missed a sitter and the match finished 4-0. ENGLAND v UKRAINE, September 10 Prior to the match with Ukraine, I thought perhaps that Ashley Young might be brought in to have a run at the full-back. The press pointed to James Milner coming in though. The match was largely a dull one. Steven Gerrard had a couple of long range efforts in the first half, one narrowly over and Walcott had a half chance. Ashley Young came on for Jack Wilshere with half an hour left and Frank Lampard, winning his 100th cap

was narrowly wide with a header in the closing stages. Number 8, Yarmolenko, and the ever attacking and willing number 10, Konoplyanka, had good matches for Ukraine and it finished 0-0. Paulo di Canio was dismissed by Sunderland in September after a poor run of results. After managing to keep Sunderland up last season during the final 7 games, they were rock bottom of the Premiership after 5 matches with 1 point. Di Canio, for me, was too temperamental and was always gesturing on the touchline. He got too greedy and should probably have stayed at Swindon where he was successful. ‘There’s no place for Di Canio in the top flight. He’s higher maintenance than the Sistine Chapel,’ as a leading national newspaper quipped. Manchester United’s David Moyes, following a 4-1 thumping by Manchester City and defeat by Chelsea, could be next. This despite a lucrative 6 year contract, which, in my opinion, he should never have been given. Moscow World Athletics Championships Highlights An undoubted highlight was the women’s 400 metres. With 5 metres to go, the race looked all but won by Botswana’s AmantleMontsho. But Christine Ohuruogu powered down the home straight and lunged at the finishing line to nick the gold and also set a new national record of 49.41 seconds. The previous record of 49.43 seconds by Kathy Cook had stood since 1984 (virtually the lifespan of the athlete). Mo Farah won the 10,000 metres gold with a sharpish time of around 27 minutes and 21 seconds and again outsprinted the Kenyans and Ethiopians in the final straight to win the 5000 metres. Adam Gemili was a highlight winning his 200 metres heat in 19.98 seconds becoming only the second UK man under 20 seconds and the second fastest of all time after John Regis’s 19.87 set back in 1994. It was also 14 hundredths of a second quicker than Usain Bolt ran to qualify and added British interest to the final. The final, like the 100m, was won predictably by Usain Bolt in 19.66 seconds but Warren Weir appeared to be catching him up as Bolt eased up on the line. Adam Gemili was 5th in 20.08 and there were creditable bronze medals for the UK women’s 4x400 metre relay team and Tiffany Porter in the 100m hurdles. France’s Teddy Tangho nailed the gold with his final jump in the men’s triple jump leaping 18.04 metres, only the third man over 18 metres and a championship record. Keep quiet about the changeover, we might get bronze! The men’s sprint relay promised to be interesting. Once upon a time, it was worth each waying (they won the Olympic gold in Athens in 2004) but with 5 batons dropped in the last 6 major meetings how can you? Dwain Chambers strutted around the track sporting a bowler hat with a Union Jack on celebrating what he thought was a bronze medal (Jamaica won). However, the changeover between the UK 2nd and 3rd legs was not a legitimate one, James Ellington receiving the baton from Harry Aikines – Aryeetey past the changeover line.

KEY FEATURE Veronika Balint We are very happy to have the latest photographic model, Veronika Balint, grace our autumn front cover. This picture was provided by Fer Diomedi who some of you may also know from Cerveceria Tipi Tapa. You often see beautiful girls on the front cover of glossy magazines but we thought it would be a nice idea to get to know the girl behind the glamour. Veronika comes from a small city in Hungary. She is 26 years old and 162cm. She is part of a large family. She is the oldest child and has one sister and two brothers but also a very close extended family. She came to Spain 7 years ago and worked as a bar manager. Veronika was “discovered” by Fer by chance when he was with a friend at the Puente Romano only two short months ago. Veronika is a very unassuming young lady. We asked her if there was anything she could change about herself, and she answered that she would like longer legs! She works out in the gym four times a week to keep fit as one of her passions is chocolate. As well as her native tongue, Veronica speaks Spanish, and would like to improve her English and
learn German as well. She works hard and likes a challenge. Veronika likes sport and to travel and to really discover any country she visits. Veronika’s favourite perfume is Bulgari Rose. She likes jewellery by Thomas Sabo, Jimmy Choo handbags and Laboutins. Her favourite colours are orange and red. Her taste in music is generally just something uplifting. Her favourite actors are Tom Hanks and Johnny Depp, her favourite films are the Harry Potter series as she read the books and she finds Marilyn Monroe an inspiration. She likes her uncle’s home cooking the best. Veronika is shy but hard working. She enjoys photographic modelling but her ultimate ambition is to have her own lingerie brand which she will call Veronika B after her name. We wish Veronika the best of luck in her modelling career. Who knows, she could eventually be the next James Bond girl and you will have seen her first on our front cover! You can find out more of Veronica at Veronika Balint on Facebook and also more of Fer’s work can be viewed on Facebook at Fer Diomedi.

KEY FEATURE What’s on at the Salon Varietes The first big show of the season at the Salon Varietes began a little before publication date but there is still a chance to catch the Musical version of ‘The Full Monty’ which runs until October 20th. Written by four times Tony award winning playwright, Terrence McNally, the story tells how six unemployed steel workers decide to ‘present’ themselves at a local strip club as they have seen how successful the Chippendales were with the ladies. But they will go one better and take it all off. The skill of the playwright, widely regarded as one of America’s very best in showing how they overcome their self-consciousness, anxieties and demons to find a new self respect is at the heart of the story. At the end is twenty minutes of hilarious, rip roaring fun that had the audience standing and cheering when the show had its first run at the theatre four years ago. Obviously a warning that the show contains nudity. Peter Mitchell directs. When Fuengirola has calmed down after that, there is a popular murder mystery ‘Murder by Misadventure’. The plot twists and turns and leaves you guessing right to the end. Directed by Paul Kloegman, this is from October 31st to November 4th. Then a delightful play ‘Romantic Comedy’ opens on November 22nd until 26th. Arrogant, self-centered and sharp tongued Jason Carmichael, successful co-author of Broadway romantic comedies, is facing two momentous events: He is about to marry a society belle and his collaborator is retiring. Enter Phoebe Craddock, schoolteacher and

budding playwright. Quicker than a flash, Jason acquires a talented and adoring collaborator in the mousy Phoebe. Fame and success are theirs for ten years, and then Jason´s world falls apart. His wife divorces him to go into politics, and Phoebe, her love for Jason unrequited, marries a breezy journalist and moves to Paris. Jason goes into professional, financial and physical decline as a newly chic Phoebe returns, solo and successful…. Henrik Hagensen will bring years of experience to get the best out of the cast for this play. After two plays it is time for the Christmas revue and this year John Gale is directing and devising the show with choreography by Alexandra Avery. That opens on December 6th and runs to December 10th. Then it will be time for Panto and details will be in the next issue of the magazine. The Box Office number is 952 47 45 42 and they now have a computerised booking system which will let you choose your seat and pay by credit or debit card, then print out your ticket just like booking an airline seat. If you prefer the personal touch, you can speak to the new Box Office Manager, Sarah Jane Gale. The office is open from 11.00 to 2.30 and for an hour before performances. Keep an eye on our Facebook page (The Salon Varietes) because there will be help in explaining the new systems and information on some of the very popular one night shows the theatre is in the process of booking.

KEY FEATURE The Pride of Marbella Awards The Pride of Marbella Awards 2013 were held at Funny Beach, Marbella on Saturday 21st September to celebrate the unsung heroes of the Costa del Sol in support of Cudeca. The Red Carpet was laid and the Champagne was poured to commend the members of the community for their courage, strength, bravery and kindness to others. Battles commenced when the voting opened only four weeks beforehand for the public to nominate their unsung heroes. Little did they expect the thousands of votes and nominations that were accumulated to support the unrecognised members of the Coast which included stories of the daily lives of all those nominated. Guests danced until the early hours to acts such as Moni Tivony from The Voice UK as well as performances from acts from the Costa del Sol such as: The Lecheritas, Emma T, Phoebe, Mitchy Jansen, Katie Hodgeson and the award winning “Dance with Freedom” which was broadcast on October 7th on Mijas International TV. Special Services Award Ed’s note: In this issue I would like to highlight the Special Services Award which went, in my opinion to deserving winners, Bomberos Mijas (The Mijas Fire Service)
By Pride of Marbella
The Services of the Bomberos on the Costa del Sol are outstanding in dealing with the fires on the Costa del Sol. No one knows when the great fires will start but the Bomberos are on hand to tackle any situation. Luckily this year the fires have been minimal for these brave men but last year the Great Fires on the Costa del Sol was one of the biggest disasters here on the coast. The courage and bravery of the Bomberos and volunteers is tremendous. These men fight to save the lives of others on a daily basis and deserve the recognition for acknowledging the safety of others. The Community said: The work done by the Bomberos is second to none. The great fires of the Costa del Sol were dreadful. Homes were destroyed and many lost everything. Hundreds of brave men stood to protect their land and nature. Without these brave men we would have lost more. Sue Daily Great night that my colleagues and I had at the awards. We are very pleased with the great response we had. Firefighters also say that overall we are here to serve the citizen. A greeting to you all. KEY FEATURE My Parents are Drinking
By Joy Fahey
Dear Joy I am very concerned about my parents who seem to be drinking very heavily. I’m 22 and moved to Spain 6 months ago and have been staying at home until I find an apartment myself. But I’m worried about what I should do to help my parents. They seem to think it’s fun to be drunk everyday and just laugh when I raise the subject, is there anything I can do? Janet Hi Janet It’s always difficult to deal with this situation when you see those you love being in denial about their circumstances and I sympathize with you. However you really have to understand that you are not responsible for your parents’ behaviour, nor can you control or cure their problems. Alcoholism is a big problem and my suggestion would be however hard it may be, is to take a step back and try not to get emotionally involved with the problem. There is help at

hand such as Al-Anon which runs support groups for families of problem drinkers which I would advise you attend. Firstly you have other people who share your predicament that helps you realise that you are not alone and secondly you have people to talk to and help you. You mentioned you were looking for somewhere else to live and this is a very good idea. You need some space between you and your parents and this will also help them. They have to come to their own conclusions about what they are doing, and you moving out might give them a wakeup call. Actions speak louder than words and sometimes we have to be cruel to be kind and this will give them something to think about. You have your own life to live and the positive to take from this is a good example of how not to live. Focus on yourself and your future, and not being so involved will really help you move forward. Good Luck Joy

Frenchbullrus News It is a very quiet time of the year for us, with no litters due until early next year and with only one puppy still available, we are all enjoying the peace and quiet. After hearing about another sad swimming pool accident, we would like to remind you all to teach all your dogs how to swim and how to get out of the pool should they fall in. Provide an area that your dog can climb out of or if in doubt, keep your dog away from the pool. No matter how long your dog has lived with a swimming pool and not fallen in, accidents happen even when you are at home, so be aware and teaching your dog how to swim to safety really is your best option. Also, training your dog how to judge the area around the pool is useful. We would like to express our sadness at the sad passing of Oscar, the French Bulldog who drowned in September this year, leaving his poor owner, Rose, heartbroken. RIP Oscarrun free at the Rainbow Bridge.

KEY FEATURE Ace Charity Annual Fundraiser The annual Ace Charity fundraiser was held as usual at Snack Attack, Jardin Botanico, La Cala on Friday, 27th September. From each ticket of 15 Euros, 10 Euros was generously donated by the owners of Snack Attack, Mark and Rob, to Ace Charity. It was a fun night and the rain thankfully held off until we were back home. Entertainment was provided by a singer, a display by the Passion Studio Zumba team, a guest appearance by “Pam” who also joined in the Zumba display very passionately and added a new Amy Winehouse routine to her act.
Snack Attack provided a good hot and cold buffet even after a full day’s work by all the staff and this was much appreciated by everyone. I am glad to report that I gave other people a chance to win prizes in the raffle this year!!! The evening was rounded off with music, Karaoke and dancing. 1740 Euros was raised on the night to help with the enormous costs of saving so many poor animals. Thanks to all who organised this. A great time was had by all (including the Belgian Consul who is pictured above) and our very best wishes to Fabienne who continues to do an outstanding job to save the hundreds of abandoned pets on the Coast.

Well the answer is at that together they have pooled their experience and set up Chili Motors. They can be found in their new garage just off the Camino Viejo de Coin in Mijas Costa. Between them they have many years of experience in servicing your car as well as repairing brakes, transmission,
clutches, rebuilds etc plus much more. They can get your car ready for its ITV as well. No job is too small. Chili Motors is open from Monday to Saturday from 9.00 am to 7.00pm which is handy as well and their prices are reasonable. Cars are also bought and sold here. Chili Motors comes highly recommended. KEY FEATURE Facts and Rumours (Please Panic, Part 3) OK, it has happened. The satellite has gone up and is now in orbit. That is a fact! Everything is now in place for the dreaded switchover to the new Astra satellites (2 E and 2 F), which will render all satellite systems pointing towards 28 Degrees useless in Southern Spain for receiving the Freeview/Freesat channels. Unless you come up with a 3 meter dish, (unconfirmed size, but people seem to agree on this estimate), the footprint will not reach this part of the world. I believe that to be a fact, too. What happens to Sky then? In my opinion, nothing for the moment, but that is pure speculation on my behalf based on the everlasting question about MONEY, which is the principal, if not the only factor, in all decision making. I think Sky is well aware of the amount of clients receiving their signal illegitimately in Southern Europe though a subscription from an address in the UK and have therefore no immediate interest in turning this signal off. This will only become interesting if the costs of maintaining the satellites themselves all of a sudden become more expensive than the possible loss of clientele by turning to the new satellites. I do not have the figures for this, but I am sure that Sky does. However, based on the same factor, i.e. MONEY, the UK television board has no income from people viewing their channels in Southern Europe and as such should only be taking their decisions based on technical matters, which is exactly what they are doing, swapping to a better, more advanced satellite. I therefore foresee that by the end of a tweaking period of say a month and a half, channels will start to disappear from your television. That is not a fact, but it is a definite rumour. There is of course the possibility that Astra wants to put the present satellite somewhere (reason being MONEY), but
By Hans Jeppe Nielsen, Manager - Wise
again, that is a rumour. We shall see soon enough. If you agree with my thoughts, the next consideration will unavoidably be what to do about it. In my opinion again, you have to go the Internet way. As I mentioned in the panic article, part 1, you need a reliable Internet connection with unlimited traffic and at least 1 Mb/s download, although I recommend 3 Mb/s. The more, the merrier. Then you would have to choose one of the many providers offering you a selection of ex-Freeview channels. As a rule you can say it will set you back around 200 Euros for the box with the install, and you would also have to pay a monthly fee of between 15-25 Euros, depending on the range of channels and the so-called compression rate. The latter is important; if you choose a low-bandwidth Internet provider and a high bitrate TV provider, you will have trouble. You can experience the different choices in our offices, one next to the other, in order for you to make the right choice. We are currently the only one-stop shop where almost every provider is represented; come round and we will show you the different options. The address is in the advert on this page. Of course, we will help you with both contracting the right Internet solution as well as the correct TV provider. Finally, you should be aware that this system, as well as your prior Sky system, can be channeled out into the different television points you might have in your house/apartment. Again, we shall be happy to provide advice in order to optimize your viewing experience. As an end comment, it seems that at the moment of writing this article Channel 4 Racing has already gone down the drain; I admit I do not know if this is due to the present situation, but‌.. be aware.

KEY COMPUTERS Computer City Newsletter Holidays are nearly over and here with some tips and tricks for organising and storing your photos. On a hard drive, you can store thousands of pictures. Having a lot of pictures is fun, but as a collection grows, so does the need for planning too. Photo management requires discipline and can be a time consuming task. Maybe save photos using just Windows Explorer in folders. Some feel the need for opportunities like a special ‘photo management programme’ would be useful. Most people manage their photos with the Windows Explorer. Works well if you do not have a lot of pictures. Save photos and archive goes through creating folders, for example, in the folder ‘My Pictures’ folder where you make your photos in place (by date and / or theme ) , e.g. ‘2013 08th St Tropez holiday ‘ or ‘2013 08 09th birthday grandma ‘ .
¨Geotagging¨: where is this picture? Geotagging is to add location data to a photo. The stored GPS information you can see exactly where a photo was taken and you can sort photos by location, country or location. There are two ways of geotagging: when taking the photo and afterwards. There are now cameras and camcorders storing directly location data from pictures at a photo. Almost every big brand has a camera with

GPS. Does your camera have no GPS? You can also choose a separate memory card with geotagging, which also stores the location information directly to the memory card. In addition, most modern smartphones store also coordinates with images. After recording, geotagging is cumbersome and takes more time and effort. There are separate GPS modules to your camera bag. It lets you add afterwards via PC GPS data to a photo. Finally, you can manually add information via e.g. Google’s Picasa software location to your photos. Backups: Everyone has at some point gotten frustrated with their computer. Computers are very useful things, but there may be a time when things go missing. Sometimes accidently yourself (oops, my image is gone) and sometimes by a crash or hardware failure. This is reason enough to make regular backups, not on your computer but external to CD, DVD (sensitive material) or to an external hard disk. So our tip (there will be a day you will thank us) save your photos and movies onto an external media storage disk, memory pen or in a cloud. Computer City this month has special offers and possibilities in media storage disks. You can find our offices above café Boulevard in La Cala de Mijas. The Journey for the Pound Continues With UK Unemployment Falling The journey for the pound continues with UK unemployment falling to 7.7%, down 1% from the previous month.Rremember The Bank of England said it will not think about raising interest rates until unemployment falls below 7%, unless of course inflation becomes a threat to the recovery. Clearly one of the issues surrounding the recovery is that in the UK real wages are continuing to fall as inflation still bites into the money people have in their pockets. Strong data in the form of The Purchasing Managers Index for services increased in August to 60.5 which represented the strongest growth in the sector since December 2006. Manufacturing also did quite well seeing a high for nearly two and a half years of 57.2. Looking ahead there is some optimism that quarter 3 figures could be even better. Just a cautionary note is that the economy is still 3% below where it was in 2008 and there are around a further 840,000 people without work. August also saw mortgage lending move ahead and currently stands around 30% higher than the same period last year. A big concern however is that a shortfall in house building even with construction increasing around 2.2% month on month could create a bubble and nobody wants to go back to the boom and bust days. There have been suggestions of capping increases which in theory sounds good however the day to day control is where the real issue is. The Eurozone was also able to provide improved data and it seems in-

vestor confidence has leapt particularly with the zone having left behind the recession.......The ECB once again left interest rates on hold at .5% and Mr Draghi confirmed to support the economic recovery the ECB will keep rates at present or lower levels for “an extended period of time”. Cyprus, who received agreement to 10billion euro aid, has suggested it will not require further bailouts whilst the Greek premier has been in Brussels talking about the package made available to Greece. Across the Eurozone zone unemployment remained steady at 12.1% and was in line with forecasts however the figure does mask some unhealthy numbers in Greece and Spain, the lowest number of unemployed was recorded in Austria, Germany and Luxembourg. Youth unemployment continues to move in the wrong direction and the concern is the lost generation, particularly in Spain where the number stands at 56.1% and Greece which stands around 62.9% horrendous statistics no matter which way you look at it. KEY LAW The AEPD has opened Penalty Proceedings Against Google for their Privacy Policy Madrid, June 20, 2013 The Spanish Agency for Data Protection (AEPD) has opened disciplinary proceedings in relation to Google’s new unified privacy policy for most of its services, implemented by the company in March 2012. The proceedings are intended to clarify whether the combination of data from various Google services complies with the Spanish Data Protection Act. Research by the AEPD on Google has indicated infringement in the following areas: 1. Google does not report clearly on the use to be made of data it collects from users, so the AEPD cannot know precisely how Google justify the collection of personal information or the use to be made of it. 2. As part of Google’s unification of privacy policies, it is possible that Google may combine personal information from one service to another and use it for other purposes. The absence of information from Google would imply that the data processing carried out is illegitimate. 3. Google could be carrying out a disproportionate treatment of user data, since in its privacy policy warns that the data collected can be used without restriction in all services, present and future. Google might be preserving user data indefinitely. The law states that personal data must be cancelled once they are no longer necessary or relevant for the purpose for which they were collected, and Google keeps them beyond these limits. The AEPD considers that the exercise of rights by users could be hampered and even prevented, because the tools offered by Google to exercise the rights of access, rectification, cancellation and opposition are scattered, are not available to all users, are incomplete, and appear with names that do not always correspond to the matter in question. Accordingly, the disciplinary proceedings accuse Google Inc., Google Spain of the commission of five serious breaches of the Data Protection Act, each punishable with fines of 40,001 Euros up to 300,000 Euros, namely: • the absence of specific legitimate purposes specific for such treatments, • the lack of explanation of the purpose in using the data, • for excessive periods and explanation of purpose for the preservation of data, • for the lack of legitimacy in the treatment of data, • hindering the exercise of rights of users. It also accuses Google Inc., Google Spain of committing a minor infraction of the Data Protection Act, punishable with fines of 900 Euros to 40,001Euros for breach of the duty of prior information to the user.

This action takes place in the framework of a coordinated action with the Data Protection Authorities of Germany, France, Holland, Italy and the UK. The Spanish Agency for Data Protection agreed to begin this research in the framework of a coordinated action with the Data Protection Authorities of these countries. France has given a deadline of three months for Google to comply with the Data Protection Act. September 2013 The first disciplinary proceedings in Spain to companies that do not comply with the rules of the ‘Cookie Law’ are underway. Google Analytics, Google Maps, Wordpress, Adsense and YouTube have installed cookies on users’ computers without user-consultation. They have incorporated cookies into their websites regardless of user consent. The main cause of the complaint notes that the webmaster did not respect the rules by not informing the user or asking for consent to install cookies on the user’s computer, as mandated by the ‘Cookie Law‘. This law is in force in Spain since March 2012, after the European Union (EU) adopted the rules in a directive of 2009, in response to the large number of complaints from users and organisations with regard to privacy online. The legislation specifies that webmasters have to communicate clearly to the user the type of cookies that are used or installed once you enter the page, before installation and the user must consent to those that come into operation. The penalty for minor breaches of the Law of Cookies (LSSICE) is up to 30,000 Euros and could be up to 150,000 Euros if the breach was significant. Unprecedented in Spain. This is the first-time application of rules of the ‘Cookie Law’ in the country. This can impact the functioning of many websites, since the type of ‘Cookies’ which are denounced by the administrator are very common on the Internet. Avoid penalties and improve the image of your website. Iberdata21 provide a course on the new ´Cookie Law´, enabling your organisation to comply with the new regulations. BODEGA BANDOLERO Typical Spanish Restaurant now also with new menu created by renowned Chef Kortijo adding a fusion twist to your favourite dishes. A delight for all the senses. We welcome Bodega Bandolero to Key to Mijas Costa. Bandolero has recently opened and can be found opposite the church in La Cala and is open every day except Mondays from 12 to 12. Spacious and nicely decorated venue with small terrace for dining al fresco. Bodega Bandolero is a typical Spanish restaurant serving high quality tapas, fish, BBQ, grill and Iberian Specialities. HOWEVER, I think the word “typical” becomes a bit lost in translation as whilst many favourites still remain, the menu has recently been revamped and renowned “Chef Kortijo” has put his own fusion twist on some of the dishes with the emphasis on both visual, as well as aroma and taste. To whet your appetite, here are some of his suggestions from the new menu: Starter dish - Vol au Vent filled with Scallops, Mushroom and King prawns with a natural Saffron Aroma Sauce. For main course - Fillet of Sole rolls filled with “Carabineros” which are delicious, dark-red prawns dressed with a Seafood Sauce with a Pernod aroma, served with Rice Pilaf topped with Octopus Crisp. Another Chef’s suggestion is Iberian Solomillo stuffed with Green Asparagus and coated with Sesame Seeds, served with a Potato “Cake” and Vegetable Surprise. These main course dishes are pictured in this Restaurant Guide – stunning! Whilst a lot of the original dishes remain on the menu, those who enjoy fine dining are in for a treat. I can’t wait to try some of the new dishes! Of course, there is also a large selection of fine wines to accompany your meal. Great atmosphere, first class food, live music, centrally located.

HOTEL MOLINO DEL PUENTE Converted olive mill in tranquil setting in Ronda with large choice for breakfast and excellent food prepared by English chef with many years’ experience previously in popular restaurant on the Coast. We are delighted to welcome Hotel Molino del Puente back into the magazine. You will find general information about the hotel in the Key News section of this magazine. Hotel Molino del Puente is one of our favourite haunts and we have visited several times already and will be on our way up there for a bit of peace and quiet in the very near future. One of the things that draws us back time and again is the food. Owners Ian and Elaine may be known to those of you that have been on the coast for a long time as they owned Harbour Lights in Cabopino back in the day. They have now been enjoying life in the campo for quite some time now and converted an old olive mill into a boutique hotel with many creature comforts, including Ian’s prowess in the kitchen! We love the breakfast buffet at the hotel with all fresh, local produce, plenty to choose from or a full English if you can’t do without. There is a small lunchtime menu and a selection of tapas available during the day, fantastic Sunday Lunch, BBQ and Hog Roast on occasion and a very tempting menu. Menu changes regularly but as an example there is a starter of Smoked Salmon served with Crispy Tempura Prawns and Thai Dip. The tender slow cooked gammon with mustard sauce is delicious and for those with a hearty appetite, try the Beef Chop with seasonal vegetables. There is also a good fish selection and of course those yummy desserts. Plenty of good wine to accompany your meal and then you can enjoy the rest of the evening joining the locals in the bar. Hotel Molino del Puente is offering special packages for Christmas and New Year and two things are for sure (a) you will have a great time and (b) you won’t go home hungry! See main ad and book early to avoid disappointment.
KORMA Very modern décor, absolutely spotless with an extensive terrace for al fresco dining, without doubt the top Indian restaurant in the area As you know, we are from the East London/Essex area in the UK and for years have missed the wonderful Indian restaurants that were local to us. Over the years we have brought to you what we have found to be the best here. Now in the middle of Mijas Costa in Riviera del Sol just as you come off the roundabout going in the direction of Miraflores (see map at the end of this magazine), Korma has recently opened its doors. Very modern décor, absolutely spotless with an extensive terrace for al fresco dining, Korma is without doubt the top Indian restaurant in the area. Some examples are Chicken Tikka, lovely big and tender pieces of chicken with a bit of a kick, Lamb Bhuna

that melts in your mouth and the best ever Prawn Puri that we have had since coming to Spain over 16 years ago! My particular favourite is the Muragh Mango, which is a lovely mild chicken curry with fresh mango in a creamy sauce with different spices but if you like it hot, then I am sure the Phal packs a punch! Included in the vegetable selection in Bhndi Bhaji (Lady’s Fingers), which is really excellent. Korma has a great choice on the menu and can make any dish as mild or as hot as you like. Portions are always generous and best quality ingredients are used. You will certainly feel full when you leave and also pleasantly surprised at what good value for money the food is. Oh, and before we forget, did we tell you that Korma also deliver? If you enjoy Indian cuisine, this really is the place. We guarantee you will enjoy your visit. Please tell them at Korma that you read about them in the Key. Korma have got it just right and consistent with friendly service, good quality ingredients, plenty of choice and good value for money. RESTAURANTE CHAMBEL Charming, top quality restaurant renowned for its enormous choice of fresh Fish, Fried Fish and Shellfish is in La Cala; if you are facing the Town Hall, walk down the turning to your right and Chambel can be found on the corner of the alley about two thirds of the way down this short road. Chambel is well established in La Cala and when we took photos, the restaurant was full. The name “Chambel” is derived from the fishing method of the same name. This is a charming, top quality restaurant serving a good selection of starters, salads, rice and paella dishes as well as meat dishes such as Creamed Chicken Gratinee, Duck Confit, BBQ ribs and Entrecote, but Chambel is renowned for its enormous choice of fresh Fish, Fried Fish and Shellfish, with many “portions” of fresh fish and other favourites as well as international dishes including Fillet of Monkfish with Lemon Sauce, Lobster, Salmon with Yoghurt Sauce and Sole Meunier. You can also enjoy wine from the extensive list and live music. I cannot do the dishes justice just in words but if you can, log on to their website, www. restaurantechambel.com and look at the dishes and you will see what a treat you are in for. I am really looking forward to enjoying some of the dishes at this fish lover’s paradise. Winter opening hours are from 12 - 4 and 17.00 – 22.30. Very keenly priced.

is a plant with a root that looks like a human and when unear thed, the root screams. The Mandrake gained popularity recently as it was featured in the Harry Potter films. La Mandragora is situated on the middle floor of the El Zoco Commercial Centre in Calahonda. Restaurante La Mandragora is Calahonda’s Premier Restaurant specialising in the finest International Haute Cuisine with a Mediterranean twist. La Mandragora is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 7.00 pm. As the name suggests, this restaurant has a magical feel to it. The interior seats 60, has an open kitchen and the decor combines modern design and traditional European decor with many antiques and paintings by Slovakian ar tist, Jaro Jelenek, adorning the walls. There is a small terrace overlooking the Mediterranean and a much larger terrace outside the entrance to the restaurant seating another 60 people. Service is always very attentive and friendly. Now the best par t – the food! Owner, Rudolf, pays great attention to detail and is constantly sourcing new products from the freshest of ingredients and coming up with new, innovative ideas, which are exper tly prepared by chef, Mario Kasala, into the wonderful dishes that we all enjoy. I believe good food is an ar t form and should awaken all the senses as well as being pleasing to the eye and the palate. Some of the dishes that have excited diners at La Mandragora over the years are star ter dishes such as Chicken below 0, marinated fried chicken strips with olive oil ice cream over coloured lettuce, apples and grapefruit with Greek yoghur t and sauce and another firm favourite, Caesar’s mushrooms sautéed with spring onions – you really must try this! Main course favourites are the Slovakian Beef Goulash which I always enjoy and the Lamb Fillet with sugarcane honey and balsamic vinegar reduction is also highly recommended. Please leave room for a delicious desser t – I personally love the Apple Strudel but there are many more to choose from. La Mandragora is a culinary delight but La Mandragora is also renowned for its extensive and excellent wine list of which the staff are very knowledgeable and can help you choose the perfect wine to complement your meal. On this note, I would recommend that you book yourself in for one of the exciting Maridaje (wine pairing) events – a full explanation of this is on page 62. Restaurante La Mandragora also offers a keenly-priced menu for two with a large star ter to share plus a main course each of your choice from a good selection – the perfect excuse for a regular visit! The owner of this restaurant takes great pride in the quality of the cuisine and the discerning diner will return time and again to enjoy the experience that is Restaurante La Mandragora. La Mandragora is recommended by TripAdvisor, the Easy jet magazine and now also Key to Mijas Costa magazine.
JAPANESE RESTAURANT GINZA Wide range of authentic Japanese food including Sushi and Sashimi and Teppanyaki Show plus much more in its sophisticated surrounds. Ginza is in Jardin Botanico, La Cala. Decorated to a high standard. Highlight is the Teppanyaki show where exotic food using the best quality ingredients is masterfully prepared on a hot steel plate right in the middle of the table. The chef will show you the unforgettable cooking display called “Teppanyaki”. Pepper pots etc are exper tly thrown in the air and you must watch the trick with the eggs. Try to catch a bit of the omelette in your mouth when cooked! This is great fun to experience something a bit different or par ticularly if there are a few of you. Try one of the specially selected Teppanyaki menus which are great value for money. Ginza is open from 12.00 to 24.00. Places around the Teppanyaki spectacle are limited, so it is advisable to book. Food here is consistently of the highest standard, excellent service, Teppanyaki show makes for a very enter taining night out. We are pleased to vote Japanese Restaurant Ginza restaurant of issue 91.

KEY FEATURE LA MANDRAGORA EL ZOCO, CALAHONDA Below is a resume of wine pairing events to be held at La Mandragora. This was a night to remember. Thanks so much to everyone involved for inviting us. Please book early to enjoy one of these special events. La Mandragora presented its first ‘Wine Pairing’ days for October, November, January, February and March THE 1st EDITION OF “LA MANDRÁGORA WINE AND DINE DAYS” BRINGS THE “MARIDAJE” CONCEPT CLOSER TO FOREIGN RESIDENTS • The knowledge of combining different types of wines with a variety of cuisines is the so-called “maridaje” concept which is still to be discovered and enjoyed by foreign residents on the Costa del Sol. • La Mandragora has been serving haute Mediterranean cuisine in Calahonda for the last 20 years and has now decided to offer clients and friends the opportunity of tasting a new gastronomic experience. • Wine experts from different prestigious wine cellars of Spain will be in charge of conducting the ten wine pairing days programmed at La Mandragora for October November and the first quarter of 2014. Friday, 13th of September 2013 La Mandragora restaurant presented its first edition of ‘Wine and Dine Days’, a series of ten wine pairing events for clients and friends that will take place in October, November 2013, and in January, February and March of 2014. Hosted by Rudolf Sandrick and the chef of the restaurant Mario Kasala, and guided by wine experts of different prestigious wine-cellars of Málaga and the rest of Spain, these ‘Wine and Dine Days’ have the objective of bringing closer this traditional Spanish gastronomic experience to foreign residents of the Costa del Sol. The presentation of La Mandragora ‘Wine and Dine Days’, which also included a wine pairing session developed by Álvaro Pérez Navazo and Diego Canals, from the prestigious Abadia-Retuerta wine cellar, has been the starting point of the ten sessions that will take place in the restaurant involved by the unique atmosphere of El Zoco de Calahonda, the original decoration of the restaurant, the deliciously cooked dishes and the tradition and history of the wines that will be tasted during these sessions. These ten sessions will

take place on the 10th and 24th of October, the 7th and 21st of November and then, in 2014, on the 9th and 23rd of January, the 6th and 20th of February and, finally, on the 6th and 20th of March. The types of grapes used for the wines, the treatment given to them in the wine cellars, the influence of time and weather, the history behind each brand and the food combination suggested for each wine depending on the season, the ingredients of the dish or the desired taste result are just a few tips and knowledge that the wine experts will share with people attending these ‘Wine and Dine Days’ at La Mandragora. As owner and chef of La Mandragora, Rudolf Sandrick, explains: “we want our clients and other foreign residents to discover and get involved in this Spanish culinary tradition, we want to share with them the pleasure of eating with the appropriate wine for each dish, help them create the same experience at home and bring them closer to part of the Spanish gastronomic culture, which is incredibly rich and healthy”. What is “Maridaje” “Maridaje” is the Spanish expression for wine and food pairing and is a traditional way of getting the best taste of each one of them. This gastronomic experience helps to enhance different flavours while having a glass of wine during lunch or dinner. Normally guided or advised by a wine expert, wine and food pairing has generally been an unknown experience for foreign residents on the Costa del Sol. Even though the Costa del Sol has traditionally been enjoyed by foreign tourists and residents that appreciate the food and drinks of the Southern area of Spain, very few currently get the chance to come closer to its gastronomic culture and history. This is why La Mandragora has decided to organize the 1st edition of La Mandragora “Wine and Dine Days”. About La Mandrágora La Mandragora restaurant has been active in Calahonda for the last 20 years offering haute Mediterranean cuisine at affordable prices, giving special importance to ingredients, cooking and serving quality. La Mandragora is located in a unique area with terrace to the sea, has its interior decorated with paintings by a Slovakian artist and offers high quality dishes elaborated with local produce by chef, Rudolf Sandrick. La Mandragora has been featured in ‘Fly’ magazine, of Easyjet, and recommended in TripAdvisor.

Food For Thought - Spain 2012 I read my horoscope religiously every day, its guidance kept me focussed. One day 27 years ago I had a Damascus road experience! I changed books. Now every day I read a different popular daily guide. It was 9th January 2012 and my daily reading began ‘Pack up your house and go to a country I will show you’, Genesis 12:1. Wow! Interesting, my husband was due to retire in the July, but we definitely were not planning on leaving the country. That same day I had a meeting with my ‘boss’ at work, her first words to me were, “ We will be re-locating to Spain” Wow what an amazing co-incidence; or maybe a ‘God-incidence’! Another interesting fact came to mind; I had a ten day holiday already arranged in Spain for May 22nd and furthermore it was only a fifteen minute drive from the new re-located office; I never imagined when I made those holiday plans that they would turn into a house hunting holiday, another wonderful and again amazing co-incidence; I actually found our new home in Spain on our 42nd Wedding anniversary; It was the evening of 23rd May, I was in the ‘Cheers Bar’ having supper with my sister and reading emails when, I opened a Jackie Lawson Anniversary Card from my husband, suddenly loud and clear the wedding march began, everybody stood up and cheered - how appropriate!! My husband and I boarded a ferry on 29th July to start our new adventure in Spain!! I have been a Christian for 27 years; before our departure I was meditating on that fact, amazingly I discovered the number 27 was an important number in the Bible: It was the day Noah and his family came out of the Ark to begin a ‘new start in life’ You can read the story of Noah and his family in the ‘Bible’ Genesis 8. What happens if a death should occur at home? Under Spanish law, the Guardia Civil (police) must be called. They will then contact a doctor and finally the Guardia Civil will have telephoned the Funeral Director to attend to the deceased. The Funeral Director who attends to the deceased may not speak English and you will be asked to sign a “body release form” which is a legal document allowing the deceased to be removed from the home. In many cases this document forms part of the official contract whereby price is not disclosed until arrangements have been completed. This is a legal binding contract whereby you have no control over the arrangements or price. This is a dreadful situation for anyone to experience, especially when in a foreign country, not to mention the emotional distress and vulnerability.
