terrible! We also normally use 2 to 4 different colours to get an exact match to your own hair. For more information on Hair Extensions or to book our free consultation, call Hair Magic on 952 931 777/673 998 787.
Q My hair is really fine – can I use extensions to thicken my hair? A We do more extensions to thicken hair than we do to lengthen it and it’s very cheap as we charge per extension. For thickness you need 20 to 35 extensions at a cost of between 3 to 4.50 Euros depending on the length and quality of hair you choose. Q Will they damage my hair? A There are many bad things said about hair extensions. If they are put in properly with correct tension, they will absolutely not damage your hair. Q How long do they last? A We fully guarantee our hair extension for the first 8 weeks but they can last for five months. Q How do I look after them? A You treat them as if they are your own hair. You can’t leave them wrapped in a towel and you can’t go to bed with them wet or tie them up when wet, as they can tangle. You can even colour your hair with them in as they are real hair. You can use straightening irons, tongs, hair dryer, all as you would with your own hair. Q I would love long hair – how many extensions do I need and how much will it cost? A In order to have long hair you need between 70 and 120 extensions. It all depends on how thick your own hair is and if it is fine, you won’t need as many. If your own hair is thick, we have to match the extensions to your own. If not, you will see a line between your hair and the extension and this looks

KEY BEAUTY A Career for Life
By Giselle Beck-Davies
Choosing the best qualification in Beauty Therapy, Make-up or Hairdressing is not easy as there are many options out there! The main points to look out for are: - That it is an International Qualification - enabling you to work anywhere in the world and also to earn a job promotion. - The College has an excellent examination success rate. - The Tutors are well qualified and experienced in their subject. - The Tutors are qualified to teach and have experience in delivering to a class. - There is plenty of equipment available to practice with. - You will leave the Course salon-ready having completed enough hours! You cannot be employable after 2 days training! - The Standards are very high and professional. Amanda’s story at Marbella Beauty Academy: Amanda Gunnell joined Marbella Beauty Academy in September 2012. She was extremely shy and quiet. Having decided to do a Body Massage course, Amanda soon decided to do the Full Beauty Therapy Course and loved every minute of it. Poor Amanda was nagged into wearing her very long hair up in a bun and to communicate more with the clients; she never minded one bit and went from strength to strength, always with a lovely smile on her face.

Graduation came and Amanda had achieved amazing examination results; she then decided to apply to work in the Steiner Spa on board a cruise ship. Couch in hand, Amanda went for her interview with the Steiner recruitment manager and delighted us all by being accepted. Having never been away from her home or family before, this brave young lady had to send her beloved horses to stay with friends in Wales. It made me cry when I saw pictures of her waving the lorry off down the lane. All goodbyes to family and friends done, she arrived in London at the Steiner Academy, where she would stay for the next month learning about the product ranges and training in Bamboo Massage and Stone Therapy Massage. The next part of this exciting adventure was to be in the Isle of White gaining her STW95 licence which anyone working on boats or ships requires, learning about emergency drills, life saving rafts, fire fighting and the safety rules of working on board ship. Great Stuff!!! Finally having passed everything with flying colours, the day came when Amanda was told where her new home would be for the next 9 months, on board the Premantur Ship. She has been cruising around the Med for a month and last week set off for Brazil. WE WISH YOU ALL THE LUCK AND HAPPINESS IN THE WORLD AND LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING ALL ABOUT IT!

KEY HEALTH The Genie Experience
By Anne Stark
I am not surprised that more and more people are finding The Ten Minute Miracle by Genie the best way to enhance their beauty. It’s very simple, 10 treatments of 10 minutes duration, 2 to 3 treatments per week. It comes with guaranteed results to enhance cheek bones, lift the corners of the mouth, fill out upper lip, sharpens jaw line and helps reduce crepe-like neck at the same time improving the texture and tone of your skin. Don’t be fooled by imitations – only Genie Take Ten has the patented Baxendale Wave and is more effective than any other system available in the beauty industry. With all this, as well as your up to date Genie qualified therapist, you know you will be in good hands. “Does it hurt”? Clients ask. Well, you should expect to feel a tingling sensation and also a little pulling of the contraction. It is important that the therapist uses the correct preparation products before treatment as, for example, alcohol-based products will result in burning of the skin when reacting with electrical stimulation. It is most important to note that re-using pads will reduce performance by as much as 70%, as well as increasing the risk of skin damage, notwithstanding the hygiene aspects! I welcome you to a FREE Trial Treatment where every detail of the treatment will be explained to you. For those people who have suffered from Bell’s Palsy, this is the best treatment for you. The price of 10 treatments by Genie is 250 Euros. Why 10 treatments? Well you will see the difference after the first treatment but we want lasting results. This will happen after the 6th treatment, so less than 10 treatments is really wasting your money. So, pick up the phone and arrange to come for your Trial Treatment at NO COST to find out for yourself if this is a treatment for you! For those who find massage an important part of their wellbeing, I am pleased to announce that I have gone back to school to improve my skills, so that I can treat my clients even better! My Deep tissue Therapeutic Massage for Sports’ Injuries or General Wellbeing is always a welcome gift to receive. See the advertisement on page 9 for more details. Gift vouchers are always available for my large selection of excellent treatments for both face and body. You will find something for everyone. My best regards to everybody for this festive season and thank you for your support in 2013. Happy 2014 Anne

KEY HEALTH Ovarian Cancer Often referred to as the silent killer, ovarian cancer presents with symptoms that can easily be confused with other health problems. The key to diagnosis is “Persistent, Frequent and New Symptoms”. 7,000 women are diagnosed every year in the UK with ovarian cancer but the average GP may see one case of ovarian cancer every five years. Most tumours on the ovaries are not cancerous, but benign. They are not life threatening and can occur for a number of reasons. Only around 1 in 5 ovarian masses found in women still having their periods (menstruating) are cancerous. That figure rises in post menopausal women - those who have gone through the ‘change’ some time ago. For women in this group it is likely that one in every two tumours will be malignant (cancerous). Symptoms awareness currently provides the best safety net for women and early diagnosis often leads to the best outcomes. Recent studies show that the majority of women with ovarian cancer, even those with early stage disease, do have symptoms prior to diagnosis. There is increasing evidence that symptoms may be present for a median of 12 months. Whilst the presentation may be vague, non-specific symptoms, there is accumulating evidence that women with ovarian cancer experience symptoms that are persistent, frequent and new to them. What are the symptoms?
Supplied by Clinica Medicare - Stomach and/or pelvic pain - Persistent bloating (no relief from the bloating feeling) - Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly Other symptoms may include: - Excessive tiredness and back pain - Urgency to pass urine - Change in bowel habits Remember ovarian cancer primarily affects women over the age of 40, but it is important that women of all ages are aware of the disease and its symptoms. The symptoms occur for many reasons and your healthcare professional is unlikely to want to send you for unnecessary tests. But if the symptoms continue, occur on most days or started for no apparent reason, make sure ovarian cancer is considered. The sooner ovarian cancer is diagnosed, the easier it is to treat. Survival can be 70% for women diagnosed with early stage ovarian cancer. That means that seven out of ten women will survive for five or more years. If you are having symptoms more than 12 times a month your Healthcare Professional should do a CA125 blood test. Clinica Medicare would like to wish a Merry Christmas and Happy and Prosperous New Year to all our customers and friends.

KEY HEALTH Bleeding Gums
By Chris Weir, Sonrisa
Many people have bleeding gums, but don’t suffer any pain, hence they are unlikely to seek treatment. Are bleeding gums a problem, does it matter? The answer is a resounding YES! If left unchecked, they will continue to deteriorate with swelling, receding gums, loose teeth, bad breath, sensitive teeth and finally tooth loss. If you are experiencing some or all of these symptoms, you have got periodontal gum disease. Periodontal disease can progress to tooth loss and is directly linked to heart disease, strokes, respiratory disease and digestive disorders. How does it start? It starts with the build up of bacteria in the mouth which invade the gum tissues, multiply rapidly forming plaque on the teeth which, if left unchecked, will harden to form tartar. This leads to the progression of gum disease, with gingival pocket formation, receding bones and bone loss. Bacteria multiply rapidly in the gum pockets round the teeth, producing toxins which destroy gum tissue and bone leading to loose teeth, bleeding gums, swelling and eventually the bacteria can invade the blood stream and spread round the body. Once the bacteria have got into the blood stream, they can spread to other parts of the body causing more serious conditions. What are the causes? 1. The main cause is poor oral hygiene (not cleaning your teeth regularly leads to the build up of plaque). 2. Smoking (there is a strong link between smoking and gum disease). 3. Poor diet (lack of vitamins such as vitamin C). 4. Stress (stress lowers the immune system). 5. Drug abuse (many drug addicts have poor oral hygiene and decayed teeth). 6. Dry mouth (people who can’t produce saliva suffer gum problems. Saliva protects the soft tissues of the mouth). 7. Hereditary factors (some people are more at risk because of inherited genetic factors). 8. Hormonal factors (women are more likely to suffer from gum disease during pregnancy and menopause due to hor-
12
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
monal changes). 9. Medication (the oral contraceptive, steroids, anti depressants can all affect the gums). How do you treat gum disease? 1. Establish good oral hygiene through visits to the dentist/hygienist for thorough scaling and polishing of the teeth, to remove all the tartar and plaque from the teeth both above the gum and below the gum. 2. Reduce the bacteria levels with mouthwashes, special gels and regular daily tooth brushing. 3. Injecting antibiotic gels into infected gum pockets and sometimes oral antibiotics are needed to lower the bacteria levels. 4. Reduce your sugar intake (sugar helps plaque grow). 5. Maintain good oral hygiene with tooth brushing 2/3 times every day. (b) regular use of dental floss and inter-dental brushes (c) using mouthwashes to reduce bacteria and plaque. 6. Maintain a healthy diet and make sure you get your vitamins. How do you maintain health gums? 1. Visit your dentist twice a year for proper scaling and polishing. 2. Reduce bacterial levels and plaque with regular mouth washing with any mouthwash containing CHLORHEXIDINE such as Corsodyl, Perioaid, Bexident etc. or use Listerine which also reduces plaque and bacteria. 3. Brush your teeth and floss every day. 4. Reduce your sugar intake and eat a healthy diet. 5. STOP SMOKING (people who smoke and have poor oral hygiene will get gum disease and lose their teeth and are also likely to suffer HEART DISEASE). Remember, looking after your teeth and gums leads to a healthy mouth and body. Neglect your mouth and bleeding gums is the least of your problems. It will lead to tooth loss and possible heart disease, strokes and pneumonia. The mouth is the main door to the body; bacteria enter the mouth, multiply rapidly, enter the blood stream from the gums and spread through the body causing systemic diseases. You can reduce the chances of gum disease by simply keeping your teeth, gums and mouth clean with good, regular oral hygiene.

KEY HEALTH Getting a Cold? Bio-InfluZinc ™+ C The Wonder of Zinc Zinc is an essential dietary mineral, being a vital component of a number of enzymes which catalyse over 200 metabolic reactions necessary for normal functioning of cells. The body does not produce or store zinc, so it requires external dietary sources for a continual supply. Good sources of zinc include meat and fish. Severe Zinc deficiency is rare in the UK, although nutritionists consider many individuals do not have an adequate intake of this mineral. Those at greater risk of zinc deficiency include teenagers undergoing puberty, pregnant and lactating women and the elderly. Of the various chemical forms in which zinc supplements may be available, zinc gluconate (a readily absorbed form of zinc) has been the most widely used in clinical trial studies. Bio-InfluZinc ™ + C sits perfectly within our established range as a topical, instant defence against the onset of the common cold. What is Bio-InfluZinc ™ + C? Bio-InfluZinc ™ + C is designed to target the onset of a cold. The orange flavour pastilles contain organically bound, bio-available zinc and natural vitamin C in the form of Acerola cherry extract. The pastille preparation ensures fast, soothing delivery of the active ingredients to the mucous membranes in the oral cavity and throat. They’re sugar free, containing only natural sweeteners. Dynamic Duo The benefit of combining zinc with vitamin C is that they both contribute to the normal functioning of the immune system and defend against cell damage for oxidative stress. Vitamin C also helps reduce tiredness and fatigue, while increasing energy levels. High, acute intake of zinc and vitamin C could be useful for brief periods of 7-10 days, depending on the circumstances. By taking a pastille every few hours, you can ensure a consistent delivery of the zinc and vitamin C right to the source of the cold. Nature knows best Both the vitamin C and the zinc in Bio-InfluZinc ™ come from natural sources. It’s this attention to detail that creates a quality supplement. Acerola cherries are known for their exceptionally high Vitamin C content, which is around 30 times that of an orange. Organically bound zinc is better identified and taken up by the body. This is pretty important in a pastille, where fast action is needed. Full of Cold? Think Zinc! It is now understood that zinc, administered within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms, reduces the duration and severity of the common cold in healthy people.
By Anni’s Vital Shop
In a 2011 Cochrane Review, Singh et al outlined the benefits of the essential trace element zinc for real-time protection against colds. Their review revealed that absenteeism from school and work due to colds can be reduced in children and adults when they increase their zinc intake. Zinc trials for colds began as far back as 1984. However, there was a delay in reaching this important conclusion due to the outcome of some trials being affected by poor bio-availability. How much can I take? The recommended daily intake is 3 to 6 pastilles daily, unless otherwise advised. Blisters save you money! Studies show that people who buy certain vitamins (such as vitamin C) in jars and tubs could be wasting their money. The active ingredients can be affected by humid environments, oxidative damage, and sources of contamination. The blisters effectively protect the pastilles against this and keep them active for many months.

KEY HEALTH Antigym®
Interview with Paloma R.Hergueta
I have always had a desk job and as a result, have been suffering from back pain for some considerable time now. A friend told me that she heard of Antigym® many years ago and that there was now a practitioner in Marbella so I set off to meet Paloma Hergueta. Not only was I delighted to meet Paloma for an interview, but she also gave me an Antigym® session while I was with her. Paloma stresses that, regardless of your age, your musculature is malleable, which means that you can overcome the learned behavioural and posture patterns that are now causing you pain with very easy movements. “At any age, contractions, stiffness and muscular joint pains that shrink and restrain the body disappear allowing the body’s movement to regain its natural amplitude.” “The unique method of body work comprises subtle but powerful movements”. Over the course of the sessions, participants, of any age, regain mobility, vitality, health and independence”. Explained as a voyage through one’s body and its history, Antigym® draws attention to how the body has quietly reorganised, adapted and protected itself over time. During the sessions participants are led towards a reawakening and rediscovery of parts of the body. Travel through your body Practicing Antigym® is like embarking on a voyage through your body and its history. You discover how throughout your life your body quietly reorganised, adapted and protected itself. You learn to perceive and understand your body in a deeper, more accurate and autonomous way.

Regain your natural range of movement Class by class you learn to rid yourself of the contractions, stiffness, and muscle and joint pain that exhausts you, shrinks you, and restricts your freedom. Your movements and your breathing regain their natural volume. Today, more than 30 years after its creation, Antigym® is practiced worldwide. It remains a deeply original and different method. Now, you can practice Antigym® on the Costa del Sol with Paloma R.Hergueta, a certified practitioner of Antigym® in Marbella. Contact 651 716 489 or email palomarh.ag@gmail.com for details of classes and more information. You can also find out more on www. antigymnastique.com. I am looking forward to my Antigym® sessions as the first one left me feeling very relaxed and also that a ton of tension had been lifted. In the meantime Paloma showed me a very simply technique I can use sitting at my desk. By just rolling my whole foot over a tennis ball while I sit, it is amazing how many muscles can be awakened!

Losing weight and keeping if off is not just about looking good – it´s about improving your health and taking control of your life. It is well documented that by losing weight, blood pressure and cholesterol improve, knees and other joints don’t ache as much and blood sugar levels are more stable. The things that we don’t see from the outside of our bodies, and can only be measured by clinicians are the improvement in our cardiac function and our liver function. The body is an amazing computer that self heals. But unless we give it some help, as it gets older and starts to wear out, it will start to have some hiccups and failures.

KEY HEALTH Massage
By Patricia Kaines
Massage, the use of touch, is perhaps one of the oldest, most natural and instinctive forms of expressing nurture and the desire to heal. The recent trend towards alternative therapies within the medical field is also reflected in the revived interest in massage. Unfortunately, for a number of years massage became associated with variety show jokes, the inference was that massage was sex merely sold under another guise. Luckily we have all moved on since then and now massage is once again appreciated as a healing skill in its own right. What is massage? Massage is the manipulation of the soft tissues (skin, muscles, fat and connective tissue) that may also be combined with energy work. It is a natural extension of touch, the giving and receiving of touch. Massage can be varied to provide for the individual needs of the client and benefits can include relief from headaches,
18
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
back pain and muscular tension. Whatever the massage system used there will be psychological effects that will be common to all of them. These will include a feeling of well-being and relaxation and an increased awareness of your body. So, give yourself a treat and book a massage with Patricia, whether you have a specific problem that needs addressing or not. With almost 15 years of experience in massage therapy working in both the NHS and privately, you know that you are in good hands. Choose from one of the following: a sports/deep tissue massage, Swedish massage, a gentle relaxing massage or even an Indian Head Massage. Patricia is available for treatments at Clinica Medicare in La Cala de Mijas. Please phone the clinic on 952 835 776 or phone Patricia directly on 666 170 868. Editor’s note: We have used Patricia regularly for a long time now and her treatments are highly recommended.

KEY HEALTH Common Myths about Varicose Veins Anyone who has varicose veins can tell you what they are! Whilst many varicose veins are small and do not cause a great deal of concern, sometimes they can develop and become enlarged, swollen blue veins on the legs. Eventually varicose veins become symptomatic and result in aching, swollen legs. Chronic veins can lead to discolouration of the skin around the ankle which may ultimately break down and become ulcerated. There are many old tales of Varicose Veins; here are answers to some of the myths about Varicose Veins. 1. They are hereditary True. Unfortunately, if your parents had varicose veins, then your chances of developing them are higher, particularly if your father had varicose veins. 2. Standing or sitting for long periods brings them on True. Those with jobs involving standing or sitting for extended periods can find they are more prone to develop varicose veins. This is because the blood pools in the legs and the muscles that normally pump the blood back to the heart are not being used. If you have to stand for a long period of time, try shifting your weight from one foot to another every few minutes. If you work sitting down, try and get up and move around every 30
By Jane Naughton, The British Surgical Clinic
minutes to stimulate the circulation. Wearing support socks or stockings can help reduce the incidence and severity of varicose vein development. 3. Treatment is painful and drawn out process False. Whilst many surgeons still offer “old-fashioned” vein stripping surgery which is quite painful and requires hospital admission, recent surgical advances has made treatment of varicose veins much simpler, quicker and less painful. The key to treatment is the accurate mapping of the veins in the leg and identification of the damaged veins which are causing the varicose veins. Today most varicose veins can be treated as a day case procedure, often under local anaesthetic, and usually patients can get back to their everyday life very quickly. With the new minimally invasive surgical options of VNUS Closure Fast® or Laser, some clinics are now offering a “walk in – walk out” service. Recent controlled clinical trials demonstrated that the Closure technology created less bruising and pain than Laser. The British Surgical Clinic’s dedicated Marbella Veins Service offers all patients a FREE initial consultation to assess and discuss the best possible treatment for their varicose veins. For further information visit our website www.marbellaveins.com or call Jane on 951 703 243 to make your appointment.

It is an English tradition that many other countries enjoy (although they think we are mad - oh yes they do!). This year we are presenting the story of Aladdin, the poor boy who discovers a magic lamp from which the genie appears and grants his wishes. There is the beautiful princess with whom he falls in love, her poverty stricken father, the Emperor of China who sees the wealth of Aladdin’s mother, the Widow Twanky (played as always by Peter Height, another strange English tradition) and proposes. There is love, villainy, comedy, camp, songs, dance, audience participation. It’s perfect for all the family and if you have never seen a pantomime at the Salon Varietes, something to talk about for days. That opens on December 20th to 23rd and January 2nd to 5th. Matinees on December 21st and January 4th and 5th. We hope by then to have a full online booking system operational on our website www.salonvarietestheatre.com. Up to date information is available on our Facebook page. After the panto we will have a one woman show, Zelda, performed by Bobby Aaron. Zelda was the wife of F Scott Fitzgerald, writer of The Greta Gatsby. Her story is an amazing one and

this performance promises to be the highlight of the season. Dates are January 10th and 11th. On January 17th the return of the very popular Johnny G. He always sells out the Salon so for once book early means it! On January 24th the farce ‘Not Now Darling’ opens. That goes on to Wednesday 29th. Directed by David Vincent who also takes a major role this is one of the fixtures of the Salon season. David has long experience in professional theatre including four years in the West End with the Theatre of Comedy. Just the thing to make you forget the Christmas credit card bills arriving in mid winter. February begins with the Jump Band on the 1st. A must for lovers of Jazz and then another Salon regular, The Old Time Music Hall. First night is on Friday February 7th and goes to the following Tuesday. Directed by Sian Hopkins the regular MC is, of course, Colin Pollard. Timings of all our shows are each night at 8 but on Sunday at 7. The Box Office number is 952 47 45 42 and Sarah Jane or Helen will be there from 11.00 to 2.30 each day except Sunday and for an hour before curtain up on show nights. Whether you come to the theatre or not we wish everyone a very Happy Christmas.

KEY FEATURE Dario Meets TV Presenter Karen McMahon I first bumped into Karen, when she was working as Marketing & PR Manger for Bookworld España in Fuengirola and even in those days, she constantly impressed me with her Northern English openness and directness; her bubbly enthusiasm combined with professionalism in dealing with customers such as me. If I recall correctly, I once made a remark to her that she should be on TV and not to my surprise, a couple of years later there she was interviewing me on my Marbella Campaign which she helped to support; and quite recently on November the 14th on Mijas 340 TV she interviewed Sandy Mellule, the owner of this very magazine and myself, asking me questions on my work and my latest project - a new musical “It Happened in Amsterdam” jointly created with popular local entertainer, David Mairs, as well as what was happening with the campaign and generally informing the viewers of my background. It was quite amusing and I enjoyed the experience immensely. Now for this Key magazine article, it was my chance to interview her, so I asked. “What brought you to Spain?” With a huge smile she replied. “I always said I was born in the wrong country and I like to spend as much time outdoors as possible and love sunny days, hence Andalucia... Karen went on to tell me about her career in Spain. “I started work as Marketing & PR Manger for Bookworld España. I also managed their shop in Fuengirola and helped to open the one in Puerto Banus and then Torrevieja. I did weekly book reviews for the company on Onda Cero and R.EM. Without reply she simply grinned with her cheerful expression that easily removes any negativity from around her sparkling personality. KEY ASTROLOGY Retrograde Planets As we come to the end of 2013 it seems the year has literally flown by and in a few weeks 2014 will be upon us! It’s true to say the last few years have proved to be more than a bit challenging for many, both personally and globally, so what can we expect from our cosmic friends in 2014? This is an interesting question, not least because Jupiter, Mars, Venus and Mercury are all going retrograde** at various times during the first few months of next year and we could be in for a few revelations! Briefly, Jupiter represents expansion, abundance, also excess. Mars represents, action, strength, also war. Venus represents refinement, relationships, also self-indulgence. Mercury represents the mind, communication, also restlessness. As these planets retrograde they slow down, and for us this means a period of reflection and consideration in the areas represented by each Planet (as above). The following is a brief outline of what to expect and when while these planets are retrograde, and those with birthdays in the signs mentioned may feel the effects more strongly. Jupiter Retrograde in Cancer 6th November – 5th March 2014 When Jupiter turns retrograde the emphasis is upon inner awareness, inner growth and personal integrity; there’s a need to evaluate whether we are being honest with ourselves or disloyal to our true self. Opportunities that arise during these few months will be the result of seeds planted in the past from people we’ve met or connections we’ve made in the past. Jupiter is about learning and Cancer is about instinct, intuition and imagination. Venus Retrograde in Capricorn 21st December 2013 – 30th January 2014 When Venus is retrograde, it provides lessons in evaluating the wor th and value of relationships, people and things in our life. Some may feel the need for solitude, a place away from the madding crowd, to gather their thoughts and make sense of them. If we are out of sync with what we truly value this period could prove more challenging, but when Venus goes direct at the end of January whatever could

not be ar ticulated or understood will then become abundantly clear. Mercury Retrograde in Pisces/Aquarius 6th –28thFebruary 2014 Mercury rules the mind and intellect and communications are more likely to go AWOL during a Mercury retrograde period. We may experience communication and mechanical breakdowns, setbacks and delays, more than usual that is, and while some of these are beyond our control often the problem lies with ourselves and being in too much of a hurry… now is the time to slow down and smell the coffee! Put the brakes on, reflect, review and re-assess and see if where we’re heading is where we want to go! Mars Retrograde in Libra 1st March 2014 - 19th May 2014 This is a good time to go back over situations (either mentally or in reality), to do things again and make corrections in the way we handle events. During this retrograde we have an opportunity to review the way we handle anger and to understand that anger is not a negative emotion – it’s there to let us know our boundaries have been breached! This is when we can learn to assert ourselves and not shy away from confrontations. ** When a planet turns retrograde it appears to stop and go backwards in the sky but this isn’t what’s happening at all, rather it’s an optical illusion based on the relative speeds and orbits of the Earth and the Planets around the Sun. An easier explanation would be to think of riding in a fast car which is passing a slower-moving car... the slower moving car appears to be moving backward, but it isn’t really, it’s just the relative speed and direction of the two cars that gives the illusion. For more information about retrogrades and in particular Mercury retrograde, refer to my article in October 2012 issue of Key Magazine or write to me for a copy of the article at astrology4everyone@yahoo.co.uk. Happy holidays to everyone and a Fabulous New Year… and, don’t forget the grapes!

KEY FEATURE Making Scents (Chapter 2) It had been another busy day in the salon and Kristin was grateful that the books balanced that evening, except for the five pounds that Angela Lee owed. Fran had left for home and, climbing the spiral staircase into the hallway, Kristin caught the delicious smell of home cooking. Harry was a proficient cook and was happy to prepare the evening meal. His job as a geography teacher meant that he was usually home a good hour before her. - “Hi sweetheart, how was your day?” Kristin kissed her husband on the cheek, which felt hot and bristly. He smelled of cooking and soap. - “Not bad. There’s a shepherd’s pie in the oven – shall we have a tin of baked beans with it?” He knew that the children, Ricki and Nina, would prefer those to anything else. - “Mmm – lovely. I’ll just pop up and get changed.” The children, Nina aged seven and Ricki, nine, were watching television in the faded but homely sitting room, with their feet up on the sofa. - “Hi you two. Dinner’s ready – go and wash your hands.” - “I’m starving. What is it?” Ricki asked, ever keen on his food. - “Shepherd’s pie and beans. Hurry up.” Nina switched off the television and ran to the downstairs cloakroom ahead of her elder brother. It seemed as if Nina had wings on her feet, as she preferred to run, unlike Ricki who liked to amble. Like his father, he had a bit of a tummy and had also inherited his brown wavy hair. Nina took after her mother and was dark and of slim build. Kristin threw her white uniform into the laundry basket together with the day’s used towels from the salon and slipped on a shocking pink tracksuit. She eased a pair of shoehorns into her white work loafers, promising herself that she would give them a polish in the morning. Suddenly tired, she contemplated the pile of ironing that shouted at her from the corner of the room, but as she had been up at five that morning, decided that leaving it one more day would not make much difference. Downstairs, Harry was

By Sue Cross banging the gong in the hallway to announce that supper was ready. The family always ate around the kitchen table. It was an important part of the day and a time that Kristin enjoyed when guilt did not gnaw at her stomach. She was grateful to have a husband who supported her, but wondered if he would one day tire of their unusual role reversal. Times were changing fast in the seventies, but it was hard to ignore the subtle judgmental attitudes that her peer group threw at her. She knew other working women of course, but she was also aware that many of them had given up eating at the table, instead grabbing a snack to munch around the television. The result was that communication gradually fizzled out like a damp candle. But, they did not have a husband like Harry. Although a natural career woman, at times Kristin doubted that she had made the right choice. There seemed to be two clubs of women: the working women’s club and the stayat-home mum’s club. Membership was free and the two clubs never agreed on each other’s rules. In fact, the stayat-homes looked down their powdered noses at the working women and rather enjoyed their perceived superior status. At the school gates they compared notes, each competing with the other on the achievements of their offspring, while the working women suppressed their guilt and overcompensated when their children did not reach the high standards of their critics. Kristin had been criticised to her face and was glad to delegate the collection of Nina and Ricki to her next-door neighbour, Lulu Atkins, who refused payment no matter how hard Kristin tried to press her. Instead she accepted the occasional bottle of wine or bunch of flowers with blustering good grace. MAKING SCENTS by Sue Cross is available as a paperback or ebook on Amazon. Who knows, she could eventually be the next James Bond girl and you will have seen her first on our front cover!” I think these will be words that will haunt us. They were the last ones we said to Veronika at the end of our interview with her which was published in the October issue of this magazine. Lo and behold, just weeks later on 30th October Veronika won the Chica Interviu 2013 in Madrid! Apart from the 3,000 Euro prize money, Veronika’s modelling career has now truly taken off, not only here in Spain where she has just been photographed for a limited edition calendar, the proceeds of which are to benefit children in Ethiopia, but in her home country of Hungary where she was currently
working at the time of writing. Veronika paid a visit to Tipi Tapa in Fuengirola to sign autographs before she left on her trip home and we took the opportunity to catch up with her and to get some more photos which we share with you above. We wish Veronika all the best in her new career and also thank Fer Diomedi for providing us with the front cover for the October issue. You can catch up with both of them on Facebook. KEY FEATURE I don’t know what to do
By Joy Fahey
Dear Joy I feel very guilty in writing to you but I don’t know what to do. My par tner went into hospital for a minor operation but something went wrong and he died a few days later. I feel so angry, sad, disorientated and frustrated as I don’t really know what happened and it’s left me in pieces. I find myself blaming the hospital and can’t get the answers I want, but that won’t bring my par tner back. We were very happy together and I don’t know how I’m going to carry on. I walk around in a daze; I can’t sleep and wonder what I’m going to do to with myself now. I’m sorry to write this but maybe you can help. Mary Dear Mary Firstly I’m very pleased you’ve written to me and I’m sure you speak for many people who have gone through a similar situation. Indeed it is very sad and I completely understand your feelings. It is quite natural to feel as you do, so it’s impor tant that you understand it is normal to feel that. Anger is such a deep felt emotion, the combination of frustration, feelings of rage, fury and indignation, which can leave us feeling helpless and hopeless or in time can give us determination to take action to make changes. The many reports of failings in some hospitals and the sad effects of that on actual lives lost have been in the news recently. It takes courage to speak out and here in Spain it can be difficult to have a voice and answers. But the key questions now are ‘how do you deal with your pain and how do you move forward with your life, pick yourself up and start again?’ In any recovery the old adage of ‘time being the great healer’ is certainly true, we never forget but the pain eases and our thoughts change and we slowly adapt to the new circumstances. There are many support groups and bereavement counsellors who can help you come to terms with your grief and I would recommend this would be a

good thing for you. The desperate quest for answers of ‘why’ can over shadow our whole lives, the injustice can eat away at us, so what is the answer? We can either get locked in this story and the past and in a way lose our own lives as a result, or we can let go and move forward. After losing my own son, now many years ago, there seemed no way forward, I lived for many years in a desolate place inside feeling so many mixtures of emotions of guilt, anger, desperation, emptiness and the like, it made no sense. Why, why, why was a continual record playing over and over again. A dear friend encouraged me to start writing and painting. These two creative activities opened me up to new possibilities. I started to study watercolour painting and got absorbed in art books and finding exhibitions I could attend. It led me back to life, it helped me look outside myself at nature’s beauty, and it changed my thinking and gave me a new focus. I started writing a journal; each day I would record my feelings, it released me to change my ‘why’ record and I started to see beyond why and began to see I could make my life valuable. Thirty five years later my life is dedicated to helping people and painting, and now I can thank my darling Nathaniel for the opportunity to be able to do this. Who would have thought that possible, certainly not me at the time. Finding something you can focus on cer tainly helps to ease the pain and writing down your feelings is incredibly cathar tic. It really does help to release pent up emotions, it gets them out of your head and it clears the path to see things differently. Your life is valuable, you are valuable, you can’t go back, and your past doesn’t equal your future. This is a new beginning for you, which in time you will see as a new oppor tunity. I send you much love Joy

KEY FEATURE Her Highness, Princess Lara the Cute On 19th November we were delighted to be asked to support an event being held at The Blarney in the Boulevard, La Cala in aid of Princess Lara the Cute, daughter of locals, Steffi and Johnny, who I am sure many of you will know as they have lived in the area for many years. Princess Lara the Cute was born with Beals Syndrome and therefore has severe mental and physical disabilities. However she is an incredibly strong minded and hardfighting little girl who simply will not give in. She needs a lot of help and does get some from local charities but it is never enough to cover the several operations that she will need and the cost to her parents of being there with her. It was the first of the cold nights at the event at The Blarney but that did not stop a large number of people coming out
to support the event with a quiz, music, magic show, raffle and trays full of food. The event was buzzing and went on until very late and raised a massive 1500 Euros! Everyone had so much fun that other events were planned that night, some of which will already have taken place by the time that you read this. Lara is a very dear little girl and you will fall in love with her immediately. Unfortunately she and the family are going to need all the support we can give them for some time to come to ease their lives as much as possible, so if you can arrange an event yourself or if you would like to donate for her op and help with funds towards travel and accommodation, catch all the information on her Facebook page, Her Highness, Princess Lara the Cute.

KEY SPORT England’s Form and Coral Masters England v Germany, November 19 ‘I remember Andros Townsend when he was on loan at Leeds and he wasn’t anything special,’ remarked the bloke at the local Chinese Take Away. ‘I would like to see him run the German full-back though’. A game against top draw opposition which would show where England was in terms of preparation for next summer’s World Cup finals. No Phillip Lahm or first choice keeper, Manuel Neur, for Germany though, or Mario Gomez or Mirislav Klose either for that matter. A promising run, dummy and cross from the by-line by Andros Townsend after 2 minutes. ‘Ol Bernie Clifton is hot on trombone tonight isn’t he?’ remarked an observer as the England band blasted out in the stands. A tremendous one handed reflex save by Joe Hart, flinging himself to his left to keep out a thundering header by Per Mertesacker. Mertesacker then headed Germany into the lead on 39 minutes. Four minutes later, a 20 yarder by Steven Gerrard dipped narrowly over the bar following good attacking work by Chris Smalling. The first half was largely poor. ‘Walcott and Welbeck may have made a difference,’ remarked an observer. Then a screaming low left footed drive by Andros Townsend hit a post in the 57th minute and Hart made another good parry from a Goetze low hit. It must be mentioned that Jagielka marked Goetze reasonably effectively throughout. On as a substitute, Jack Wilshere played a decent through ball but Sturridge made a hash of it, miskicking when it should have been in. ‘There’s no world beater here,’ was the comment as the final whistle went on another German win, by a single goal. Coral Masters Darts (October 31 – November 3) Phil Taylor showed no signs of slowing up at 53 as he stormed to a Coral Masters win, held in Edinburgh. He trounced a flu-ridden Adrian Lewis 10-1 in the final, having overcome a clearly under par James Wade in the semi by the same score-line. Other highlight matches were Lewis pipping Ray Barneveld in the semi and Wade hitting bullseye to take out Australian, Simon Whitlock, in the quarter final after Whitlock had led 7-4. Andy Hamilton and James Wade received stick from sections of the crowd during games and Wade was seen frequently complaining to the referee, threatening at one point

to abandon the match with Taylor. Champion of Champions Snooker A new tournament and format contested by the World’s top 16 ranked players, took place at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry between 19-24 November. Judd Trump could not get going and missed several easy balls going down 2-6 to Stuart Bingham. In contrast, the following evening saw a high quality affair between Neil Robertson and Ali Carter, nip and tuck all the way. Carter missed a virtually straight green for the match and Robertson cleared to nick a 6-5 victory. He had, at one point, been 3-1 down. Bang in form Ding JunHui, the first winner of 3 back to back ranking tournaments since Stephen Hendry in 1990 had led Ronnie O Sullivan 3-0, 4-2 and 4-3 yet still went down 5-6 in a dramatic final frame thriller which saw both players ‘twitch’ the blue several times before O’Sullivan finally knocked the blue and pink in. Rocket n’ Robbo Ronnie O’Sullivan potted a green, bouncing the cue-ball off the side cushion and cannoning into a red and black together to develop the final red. It was a stand-out shot of his semi-final match with Neil Robertson along with a 4 cushion snooker escape. A good clearance of 80 by Robertson made it 4-5 and a 125 break in the next levelled it up but O’Sullivan took the match out with a 119 break. The other semi final was won by Stuart Bingham who is finding himself at the business end of tournaments more often now, triumphing over Mark Selby 6-4. Rocket n’ Ballrunner In the final, Bingham took the first frame convincingly and later played a great screw shot on the brown down the bottom rail to level up at 2-2. Bingham went 5-3 up before O’Sullivan reduced the arrears to 4-5 going into the evening session with a 130 break. A 93 break in 7 minutes levelled the match at 5-5 but Bingham, with smart safety play went in at mid-session 7-6 up. After another nip and tuck exchange in which Bingham took the lead 8-7, O’Sullivan took the next with a crucial 96, his first sizeable break for some time then scrapped over in the next to go 9-8 up. A run of 49 for O’Sullivan closed out a well contested and hard fought match by 10 frames to 8.

KEY PETS Up to Date News Big changes for us here at Frenchbullrus - we have made the choice to stop breeding. There are many reasons why we have made this choice, because of the increasing amount of French bulldogs we are finding in need of rescue and the fact that this breed seems to suffer with their fair share of genetic health problems. No matter how hard breeders try, nobody can guarantee life-long good health and a life free from problems common to this breed. We are finding that more and more people are unable to cope with owning a high pedigree dog and an influx of adult dogs needing new homes here in Spain has shown us that this very popular breed is beginning to suffer the fall out of impulse buying. We are hearing of more and more French bulldogs in rescue centres all over Spain, with most having health problems common to the breed that the owners just cannot afford to manage or cope with. We are also seeing more and more French bulldogs with serious social problems which are NOT usually common with the breed and we feel this is due to poor breeding and possibly interbreeding of close family members which does seem to be a major problem here. So Frenchbullrus are moving forward with their rescue work.
By Frenchbullrus I, as a dog groomer, have made the choice to go mobile so that I am now able to come to your home to groom, which is much less stressful for your dog. However I also still offer a pick-up and delivery service as normal. To make an appointment you can call or text me on 661 152 451 (because I live in mountains, connection can be hit or miss, so please text if you cannot get through) or you can email me at frenchbullrus@hotmail.com. We have active Facebook pages and welcome people willing to rescue a French bulldog to our contact list. We should point out that all dogs we rescue are spayed and have completed passports and micro chip before being re-homed. However, we do also network dogs that are being re-homed direct from their owners as we feel this works very well and saves the dog the upset of moving from A to B to then to be re-homed again. All homes are vetted and full backup support is offered. We wish you all a fantastic Christmas and Happy New Year and to all the doggies too. REMEMBER on average 5 or more dogs die each Christmas from getting into chocolate gifts - chocolate is very toxic to dogs and can be fatal, so take care!

KEY FEATURE ‘ICE’ In Case of Emergency We all carry our mobile phones with names and numbers stored in its memory. If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn’t know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this ‘ICE’ (In Case of Emergency) Campaign. The concept of ‘ICE’ is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As mobile phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name ‘ICE’ (In Case Of Emergency). The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of
38

accidents there were always mobile phones with patients but they didn’t know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognised name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialling the number you have stored as ‘ICE’. Please tell your friends and family or share this information on your social media platforms. It won’t take too long before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life, or put a loved one’s mind at rest. For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. Please pass this around as many people as possible as this can help in an emergency

KEY COMPUTERS Repair, Upgrade or Buy New??? A question often posed in our offices. What is the best solution when you encounter hardware problems? How do you compare the price of different solutions and what is obtained in these cases? As always, there is no specific correct answer, but maybe a few quick guidelines will help to assess the situation for the different products: Printers: Nowadays, almost always built out of the cheapest plastic possible, and in my opinion in most cases not possible to be repaired for a lesser price than buying a new one. You should however still consider a repair if have bought a large stock of cartridges or if a new printer is not compatible with your software. This happens unfortunately more often than the general public think, as the major players in the market abide by the rules set out by the software providers and do not offer “old” software for new printers. PC Towers: These are composed normally of a number of components, which can be individually replaced and as such are a lot easier to repair or upgrade. Power supplies, hard disks, DVD burners, even motherboards and CPU’s can be swapped without any major investment in labour. This will normally result in quicker and better operation than before the repair as the new parts have simply been developed over time, but….there comes a time, where you have to consider whether it is worth it on an overall basis, as you will hit a technological wall, where you can only squeeze so much out of your existing PC. New technologies are constantly developed and new programmes might be asking too much of your beloved tower to make it worthwhile. In this case you will have to go all in and either buy new or perform a major upgrade, where the price of the latter very often comes close to buying new. Do not forget the cost involved in moving all the data and installing new programmes on the equipment when preparing your budget.

Laptops: Are like towers, but the parts are hard to obtain. Normally they are propriety components, which work only in specific devices, spare parts are located in the Far East, and generally are a lot more expensive than in the case of a tower. Nevertheless, it is still very often worth replacing a broken screen or a hard drive in an otherwise perfectly good laptop. Just arm yourself with patience or demand airmail shipment, an expensive but fast solution. Tablets, Iphones, Smartphones, GPS navigators are all just the same as laptops, only worse. Very often, you need to replace not only the screen but also the sensory layer, the printed circuit boards and plugs, all in one go, as they are only sold as a set, due to the difficulty in replacing miniscule components. Cables: As a whole, when faulty, throw them out and buy new ones. It is hard to throw a cable away just because the plug has come loose, but in my experience it is close to impossible to re-solder it and very often the “cost of ownership” of a faulty cable, i.e. the amount of times that things do not work when you need them to is far higher than buying new. An exception to this is network and antenna cabling though, as crimping these is normally not difficult if you know what you are doing and you have the right tools. In our offices, we have many years of joint experience in assessing, repairing and replacing components. Of course we can help you with that special Christmas present too! You can find our address in the advertisement on this page. Come round and say “hello” to our new member of staff, Ann-Christine, who can also help you out. She is a lot friendlier than I am! We are now open every day from 9.00 to 14.00 and normally also in the afternoons between 16.00 and 19.00. A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year to all of you from the WISE team Yours Hans J. KEY COMPUTERS RIP Windows XP On 8th April 2014, it will be the “end of life” for Windows XP. Now, that doesn’t mean XP will suddenly stop working. You can keep using it if you want, but I wouldn’t recommend it. End of life means Microsoft won’t be releasing any more security updates to the average user. Any security flaws that hackers find won’t be fixed. Your computer will be a sitting duck, even with security software installed. Here’s a fun fact: XP first appeared at the end of 2001. As late as 2010, computers were still sold with XP installed. Windows Vista, which arrived 6 years after XP, only lasted until 2011. If you think about it XP will be nearly 13 years old. Like a teenager, it’s having trouble adjusting to the world. In spite of a major overhaul with Service Pack 3, XP just wasn’t

built for the modern digital age. It’s missing key security features introduced in Windows Vista. It can’t support the latest, safest and most Web-compatible versions of Internet Explorer. It can’t take full advantage of the latest hardware advances. Many third-party companies would love to stop supporting XP. It takes a lot of time and money to make sure programmes and hardware work on every version of windows, this even affects the Internet. Web developers will be overjoyed to see XP-only Internet Explorer versions 6, 7 and 8 go away. It’s going to be a serious change for many people. In most cases it’s going to mean a new computer, upgraded software and possibly new accessories like printers and scanners. And there’s an even bigger problem until last year, upgrading wouldn’t have been quite so bad. Windows 7 was still fairly close to Windows XP in look and how it worked. In fact, I expect Windows 7 to be the next Windows version that people stick with for quite a while. Now, however, Windows 8 is the only operating system available on new computers. When you try it, you’ll find that it’s radically different from previous Windows versions. The interface was meant for touch-screen tablets and doesn’t work that well with keyboard and mouse. In fact, even finding the Desktop is an adventure in itself. The Windows 8.1 update allows you to bring back some of the old Windows. Microsoft will even include a tutorial on how to use Windows 8 - finally. But it’s still a steep learning curve, especially coming from XP. You can find copies of Windows 7 for sale online. You can install it on your current computer - assuming it isn’t too old. You could also buy a Windows 8 computer and downgrade. Just be aware that you can’t do an in-place upgrade from XP to 7. You will have to wipe your hard drive and install Windows 7 from scratch. If you buy an upgrade version of Windows 7, you will need Windows XP installation discs to prove that you are eligible. Whatever you do, start planning now. April will be coming up fast and you don’t want to be still using XP when it arrives. KEY FINANCE Some Encouraging Signs at Last The last month has seen an element of uncertainty in stock markets as investors digested news from the improving economy in the USA. The question is when will they start tapering their money stimulus programme? By the time you read this, The Federal Reserve will have its first woman chairman in Janet Yellan. PMI’s across the Eurozone are causing concern as for the second month the economy seems to be on a backward step, big concern is France. Greece still very much in the news with visits from the Troika audit committee who are finding it difficult to agree a new budget with the country whilst at the same time Greece struggles to implement in full its previously agreed measures. The European Central Bank reduced interest rates last month and may have to take further action to bolster the economy. Some good news for Spain however where we have come out of the recession and may see some easing of our austerity measures early next year. Ireland are also exiting the recession and have agreed they will not require any further support and eyes are on Italy where budgets are being discussed to present for 2014.

In the UK all seems to be fine particularly as the manufacturing sector grew at its fastest rate for 18 years. Public sector borrowing for October was little changed from last year however for this year has dropped by around £6billion. Going forward with the current strength of the UK, it is anticipated that the fall for future years could be as high as £20/30 billion. The overheating of the property market still causes some concern as mortgage approvals are up 33% year on year. UK banks are still in the headlines as the Cooperative saga rumbles on and just when you thought it could not get any worse up pops RBS who have foreclosed on business accounts then sold assets recovered at a profit. Is integrity in the banking sector in the UK at a all time low? KEY LAW Pan-European Behavioural Patterns An international law firm specialising in Digital Business conducted a pan-European study that analyses and compares the behavior of citizens in Spain, UK, Germany, France and Italy when providing personal information on websites and search engines. The findings of this study on the protection of personal data of minors in the network reveals that the majority of parents surveyed require that it is necessary for them to give permission if a company requests personal information on their children: - The British view that parental consent is required by 35% of those surveyed - the Germans by 57%. - The Spanish by 65% - the French by 52% - The Italians by 59%. Data Protection Regulations Although there is a European Directive on data protection in each of the EU countries and specific restrictions are related to the collection and processing of data from stakeholders and in particular, minors. In this sense, the age at which parental consent is required for the collection and processing of data varies from country to country and is one of the items discussed in the new European data protection law scheduled for early 2014.
By Victoria Anzola, Iberdata 21
- How to obtain the consent of parents or guardians where required and, especially, how the information on parental authorisation is to be given to children at the time of data collection. Age of Majority In Europe the age of majority varies between 16 and 18 years, while worldwide it ranges from 14 to 21. - In Germany and France under 18’s cannot usually enter into a contract without the consent of their parents. - In Spain children are able, in general, to consent to the processing of data at age 14, but for lower ages they require the consent of parents or legal guardians. In France, the only data that can result in lower subscription newsletters are e-mail and age. - In Italy there is no specific legislation on data protection. However, children under 18 cannot consent to the procurement of goods and services. - In the UK the standards set by the Information Commissioner’s Office (Data Protection Authority competent in the UK) states that parental consent is required if the child is under 13 years.
Companies need to know what exactly the data they want to collect on children, knowing that child data is ESPECIALLY SENSITIVE DATA. The companies therefore have to take precautions to avoid violating the data protection law for children. Many of these issues can be solved with creativity, because the challenge is to train and educate children on the protection of their own data.
Data from the study The study was conducted from August 28 to September 4, 2012 using an online survey involving more than 5,000 European citizens between 16 and 75 years, of whom 1,024 were Spanish aged between 16 and 65 years. There is a choice of Fresh Pasta such as Tagliatelle, Tortellini, Spaghetti and Gnochi with a selection of sauces and a huge choice of Pizzas. Also for the winter months you can choose a wholesome stew, or from the meat selection we had the Milanesa Parmesana and the Sirloin of Pork served with either Salad, French Fries, Pasta or Sauce. We enjoyed both of the main courses and there were plenty more choices including a good selection of Fish dishes. For dessert we tried a small selection and both the Chocolate Mousse and the Tiramisu we would recommend. Winter offers – Mondays – for those eating in the restaurant – for a couple, 2nd Pizza Free, and on Wednesdays all Pizzas are 6 Euros. Free delivery to Riviera, Calahonda and La Cala, order times 18.00 to 23.00. KEY FEATURE Zia Lola Pictured above is Dolores with her two girls. If you were wondering where you know her from, she owned Fellini’s Italian Restaurant at the Aztec Club in Riviera. After many years at that venue, it was recently closed as the complex is now being totally refurbished – watch this space. Dolores has now moved to Mijas Golf where she opened her new Italian restaurant, Zia Lola, on 6th December and we would like to thank her for inviting us to the opening party. It was well attended and we were treated to some excellent Italian
tapas, wine, beer etc on the night. Zia means “auntie” in Italian and Lola is an affectionate abbreviation for Dolores, so we are sure that with Dolores’ years of experience, both the locals and visitors to Mijas Golf will enjoy authentic Italian cuisine at Zia Lola’s for many years to come. Many of the favourite dishes you enjoyed at Fellini’s will be available at Zia Lola’s and Dolores looks forward to welcoming diners both old and new. lent service and competitive prices. El Olivo de la Cala is behind the BP garage in La Cala in the road leading down to the beach. Please see the La Cala map at the back of this magazine for the exact location. This is a lovely venue with extensive outdoor terrace in the warmer months and cosy fireside dining in the winter. The restaurant will have been open for five years this coming April and owner, Rafa, was born in France but has lived in Spain for a good number of years and the menu is therefore Mediterranean with a Gallic twist. El Olivo de La Cala is a firm favourite with the locals. There is plenty to choose from the a la Carte menu, but this is also accompanied by daily specials (I have always enjoyed these). They include home-made Foie Gras, King Prawn Casserole and Roasted Peppers stuffed with Black Pudding. To whet your appetite for the main event, here are some suggestions. Suckling Pig with Confit of Gooseberry with Apple and Foie Gras, or perhaps Slow-roasted Leg of Lamb, or Iberian Pork with Potato and Onion Sauce. Amongst the choices for dessert are Chocolate Soufflé, Crème Brulée and Waffles. Every week El Olivo de La Cala has a wine that is on promotion and is often a little cheaper. There is live music most Saturdays. Excellent service and competitive prices. El Olivo de La Cala is the perfect place for special events such as birthdays, weddings, Xmas, New Year and Valentine’s Day. El Olivo de la Cala is closed on Sundays during the winter months. We welcome El Olivo de la Cala to the magazine and we are sure that you are going to enjoy this little gem.

YAZAN MOROCCAN RESTAURANT AND BAR LOUNGE This venue is a little treasure. Breakfast, international menu, tapas and dinner including Cous Cous and Tajines. Yazan is at Las Jarales, Calahonda, take first exit and turn right. It is near the end. You will find a feature on this restaurant on page 64 along with the advertisement but this venue is a little treasure. Yazan is open for Full English Breakfast at only 4.00 Euros including tea or coffee. You can then enjoy lunch from an international menu, tapas and dinner. We tried some of the Moroccan tapas (although others were available) of Tabouleh, Pastelas, Humus and Pinchitos washed down with Moroccan Mint Tea. The tapas were so good, we ordered a second round! I am so looking forward to trying the Cous Cous and Tajines but there is plenty for everyone on the menu, including vegetarians. Halal meat is used at Yazan. In addition there is a well stocked bar and very comfortable cocktail lounge to chill out in. On the week of going to print there was live Flamenco on the Saturday night but please check Facebook for events. Nadia welcomes her guests very warmly and some of you will already have recognised her from the photo on page 64 and will be pleased to see her again. The food is really good, something a bit different, and very reasonably priced. Closed Tuesdays.
been missing. Zorba’s is open all day for Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks and Dinner from Monday to Saturday. Zorba’s large indoor restaurant has a lovely appeal to it and includes a good sized bar area with a private terrace overlooking the pool plus a large front terrace as well. Zorba’s is owned by Kevin with many years’ experience both here on the Costa del Sol and previously back in the UK where he had a Greek Restaurant for many years. There are many dishes to choose from for starters, including some delicious favourites such as Pork Marinated in Red Wine, Hummus, Aubergine and Tahini Dip, Tzatziki, Taramasalata, Hallumi and many more or you can make up your own Meze by choosing any 3 from the starter menu. Main course includes Kleftico, Stifado, Afelia, Moussaka, Kebabs, Grilled Salmon and Vegetarian options, but we would suggest that you try either the Mixed Meat or Mixed Fish Platter to give you an overall taster. Having said that, the Kleftico was outstanding! The mixed meat platter had several choices and included some very tasty slow-baked potatoes and plenty of fresh vegetables. Good-sized portions and the prices at Zorba’s are very reasonable. We were quite full after the first two courses, but then we were also treated to an outstanding dessert which was a kind of Apple Strudel but made from a pancake-type pastry with a delicious filling of apples, raisins, cinnamon etc. Attentive service, goodsized portions and the prices at Zorba’s are very reasonable. We would like to thank Kevin for inviting us to try the food at Zorba’s. We were not disappointed (but we couldn’t prize any of the recipes out of him)! Key recommended.

To Cook Add the pasta to a large saucepan of boiling water and simmer until just done, 7-8 minutes approx. Drain, but keep a few tablespoons of the cooking water. This will help the sauce cling to the pasta and adds a certain creaminess. Meanwhile, cook the bacon in hot oil in a large pan until crisp. Stir in the chilli and 1-2 tablespoons of the cooking water. Stir in the pasta and heat through. Add a little black pepper and enough pesto to flavour well.

KEY FEATURE Jake Needs Your Help Jake is a 9 year old boy and suffers from complex partial epilepsy in the Frontal Lobe (right hand side of the brain). This type of epilepsy is very drug resistant and hard to treat. Diagnosed when he was 2, we had a few short stays in hospital for medication adjustments but nothing major for the first 5 years. Then 2 years ago, just before his 7th birthday everything changed, he started to have lots of seizures which built up to 150-200 a day. He has spent nearly a whole year in hospital, between the Costa del Sol and the specialised children’s hospital in Madrid. A Focal Cortical Dysplasia (malformation of cortical development) was discovered, which is a congenital abnormality where the neurons develop larger than normal. This causes the signals sent through the neurons in this area to misfire and send an incorrect signal which causes a seizure. At this stage Jakes seizures were so bad, and uncontrollable he went into “status epilepticus” (continuous state of seizure), he was put into an induced coma on 3 occasions to enable his brain to rest. Over a period of 18 months, the last one in April, he had 4 major 7-hour operations to remove the affected area. The Dysplasia is in the motor part of the brain and it caused him to lose the use of his left arm and hand, considerable damage to the nervous system and facial paralysis. Jake went through rigorous daily physiotherapy for 3 months and learned to walk again 4 times. Despite this the seizures continued. Currently he is having different types of seizures, a PARTIAL with uncontrollable facial movements where blood vessels burst in his eyes. An ABSENCE where he totally disconnects, doesn’t respond and sometimes he sits and rocks backwards and forwards. Also he will spontaneously laugh, have outbursts of anger and aggression, or he goes into a state of confusion – he will walk away and doesn’t know where he is or how he got there. It’s heartbreaking to see. A recent stay in the hospital in Madrid revealed there is still a part of the Dysplasia left, and a further focal area has been
By Debbie Rose discovered, showing abnormal activity at the back of the brain. This type of epilepsy is progressive and the damage done over time through the seizures and medication overload is irreparable. His condition will worsen with the onset of puberty … leading to severe memory and language deficiency (Rasmussen Syndrome). This has started to happen as he has already lost his peripheral vision. Jake is the only child in Spain to have 4 operations of this type. The neurosurgeons in Madrid are some of the best in Europe but they cannot operate further as they do not have the technology or the surgical experience. They strongly recommend that we take him to a specialised children’s hospital the “Rainbow Clinic¨ in Cleveland, Ohio. They have years of experience and some of the best neurologist and neurosurgeons in the world. They also have a 7 Teslas MRI magnetic scanner (Madrid only has a 3T), which can detect all the abnormalities of the brain. He will need extensive tests, and will hopefully qualify for surgery to remove a larger area that’s causing all these problems. Jake is a funny, loving and caring son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend. He deserves a better quality of life and the opportunity to a future. He has already missed 2 years of schooling and the chance to build relationships with his peers. I cannot sit back and see this happening to my son when I know something can be done. I want to give him the best chance in life; he is just a child who deserves so much more. We are raising money to take him to the Rainbow Clinic, please help no matter how small. Every little helps because together WE can make a difference and CHANGE JAKE´S LIFE!! Please see http://www.gofundme.com/5ez8nc for more information and to donate or you can also donate directly to the Unicaja Bank. Please PM for details of the account. Editor’s note: I have known Debbie since I came to Spain in 1997. This is just so sad, so please help if you can even if it only a very small amount. Thanks.

WINDOW CLEANER STEVE REYNOLDS
We are delighted to welcome Steve back into the magazine. Steve is a professional window cleaner and glass curtain specialist. His prices are very reasonable and include frames, ledges, tracks and mirrors. Fast, friendly, reliable and honest service. Steve now cleans our windows on a regular basis. He really does do what is written on the tin and we are already booked in his diary for next month! Key recommended.
INFORMATION SHEETS
We know that many of you find our double page information sheets a very useful tool. We have in this issue updated the public holidays and amended and added a few of the numbers including the Domestic Violence Helpline and the Samaritans. This is, however, a mammoth task so we will make more amendments for the February and April issues. In the meantime if you, our readers and businesses, have any numbers that you would like to see included or ones that you do not find helpful, please contact us as this will assist us in our task. Our contact details are on page 4.
