KEY BEAUTY Botox & Fillers
By HAIR MAGIC
This month we are going to talk about Botox and Fillers. A lot of people, in fact most people, don’t know how they differ from each other and what they really do. BOTOX We use Botox from the tip of the nose upwards. There are three areas - around each eye (crow’s feet), the muscle in

between your eyebrows, and the forehead. What does it do? Botox actually freezes the muscle so it does not move. It’s amazing because the muscle doesn’t move; your skin becomes wrinkle free and smooth. How long does it take? Once you have had your first FREE consultation, which will take about 20 minutes as we need to know a little about your medical history and exactly the look you want, in other words if you need FILLER or BOTOX. The injections are not painful and only take 10 minutes (longer for filler). How long will it last? Botox lasts for 3 to 4 months. You won’t see any difference the day you have Botox done as it kicks in gradually over 5 to 8 days so your friends won’t notice a sudden change in your appearance. FILLERS Fillers are used from the nose down. There are three areas again, lips, cheeks and around your nose and mouth. What does it do? Fillers literally fill, as we get older we lose tone and our face loses the fullness it once had. When you use filler, you will look fuller in the face and your skin is much smoother and the wrinkles disappear. Unlike with Botox, your muscles aren’t affected; you can move the same as before and you will see the results immediately. How long will it take? Again, after your initial consultation which is free and lasts about 20 minutes, the injections take longer than Botox, 20 minutes for each area. How long will it last? Depending on which filler you choose, they can last up to 2 years. If you are interested in any of these products, call us at HAIR MAGIC and we will give you a free consultation.

KEY HEALTH Treatment by an Osteopath and Chiropractor The main point to remember is that, no matter which professional gets chosen, excellent care will be given. In simple terms, both osteopaths and chiropractors tend to treat similar conditions with similar techniques. Especially in Britain, where the two evolved along parallel but converging paths, there is a significant overlap between the disciplines. In some countries, such as Australia, the two fields are overseen by the same regulating body and a practitioner can graduate from university with both an Osteopathic and chiropractic qualification. Both osteopathy and chiropractic share a common history and philosophy which set them apart from the more traditional allopathic medical fields. Rather than focusing on the individual components of the body, osteopaths and chiropractors view the body in a more holistic manner, as a self-contained, self-healing, fully interconnected unit. The first proponent of this philosophy, Andrew Taylor Still, is credited with founding osteopathy in America in 1874. Just twenty-one years later, a former student of Dr. Still, Daniel David Palmer, founded the chiropractic discipline. In many cases, patient experiences with osteopaths and chiropractors will be very similar; however, there are some differences. When diagnosing patients, osteopaths and chiropractors both use visual inspection (observation) and palpation (touch). Chiropractors frequently rely on more diagnostic procedures, such as X-rays, MRI scans, blood tests, and urine tests. Osteopaths tend to place more emphasis on the physical examination and will generally refer patients on for more diagnostic procedures if required. The type of treatment a patient will receive at an osteopathic clinic can vary greatly. Osteopaths employ a number of techniques in order to influence the body’s innate healing system. These include; soft tissue, muscle work, joint articulation and mobilisation/manipulation. Some osteopaths work with and thereby influence organ function and movement (“visceral osteopathy”) and movement of cerebrospinal fluid (“cranial osteopathy”). The specific treatment will depend upon the patient’s unique circumstances. Osteopathic manipulation consists of positioning a joint into its close packed position and imparting a small but rapid impulse in order to separate the joint surfaces within their normal range of motion. This may produce a pop or a cracking noise; it is not a painful technique. The manipulation has the effect of freeing up any adhesions and encouraging better movement, it has a secondary, but very useful analgesic effect (pain relief). In contrast, chiropractors tend to concentrate on influencing the nervous system by employing a technique called “adjustment”. The actual technique is similar to that of osteopathic manipulation. The theory is that adjusting the vertebrae will allow it to return to its proper alignment along the spinal column and permit optimal nerve transmission. In an adjustment, the chiropractor applies pressure to the bone, unlocking it from its improper position. The technique is not painful, though patients do sometimes hear “popping” noises. These are thought to be due to small pockets of gas being released from within the joint

capsules. This is completely normal. The length of treatment also typically varies between osteopaths and chiropractors. In general, chiropractic appointments tend to be shorter as the practitioner focuses on adjusting the spine (this does not mean to say that chiropractors don’t adjust areas other than the spine). However, chiropractors tend also to see patients more frequently, as the muscles connected to a misaligned vertebra can pull the bone back out of place, and it may take a few adjustments for the spine to settle into its proper alignment. Osteopaths tend to spend more time with a patient per visit, as their focus is somewhat broader and their treatment techniques are more varied. Osteopathic treatments also tend to be spaced out over a longer period of time. Having described these differences, it is important to remember that both chiropractors and osteopaths address the same structures and use principally similar manipulative techniques. There are a huge number of variations between individual practitioners of both disciplines, from what they focus on to how they apply treatment. Each chiropractor and each osteopath is an individual with his or her own unique style of practice, and it is important for a patient to find a practice that fits his or her unique needs, regardless of the label.

KEY HEALTH What is Bio-Pycnogenol ® Pycnogenol ® (pic-noj-en-all) is a natural plant extract obtained from the bark of the French Maritime Pine, trees which grow exclusively in the south western coastal region of France, in sustainably managed plantations free from chemical pesticides and fertilisers. Pycnogenol ® contains a unique combination of beneficial active substances called flavonoids, some of which are responsible for the colouring of fruits and vegetables. Pycnogenol ® is regarded as one of the so-called “superfoods”, because of its high content of antioxidants. The health benefits of pine bark extract have been recognised in traditional medicine since the sixteenth century. Modern scientific research has resulted in the publication of more than 200 studies, including 30 controlled clinical trials, documenting the safety and beneficial effects of Pycnogenol ® in cardiovascular health, immune function and skincare. Why should you take Bio-Pycnogenol ®? Fight Free Radicals Because of its high content of powerful antioxidants, Pycnogenol ® is one of the most effective natural scavengers of free radicals. These are toxic substances produced continually within the body as an unwanted by-product of normal metabolism, as well as by exposure to environmental pollutants such as pesticides, cigarette smoke and UV light. Maintain Healthy Circulation Pycnogenol ® helps to strengthen and seal the blood vessel walls of arteries, veins and capillaries. Pycnogenol ® helps to maintain normal blood pressure, inhibits cholesterol oxidation, and promotes the normal clotting of blood. These characteristics are particularly relevant for maintaining health blood circulation during long-haul air travel. Immune Health Pycnogenol ® helps to maintain a healthy immune system and normal inflammatory response. Pycnogenol ® modulates the activity of Nuclear Factor Kappa B, the so-called cellular “master switch” controlling initiation of the inflammatory response. Inappropriate inflammatory response by the immune system can result in conditions, for example, such as hay fever, asthma and certain types of arthritis. Pycnogenol ® and the Skin Pycnogenol ® helps to maintain the strength, flexibility and suppleness of skin. Antioxidants in Pycnogenol ® inhibit free radical induced degradation of collagen, which provides the support structure for skin. In addition, Pycnogenol ® maintains the microcirculation of blood to the skin, ensuring the latter is well provided with nutrients. All of Pharma Nord’s skincare products feature Pycnogenol ® as a key ingredient. Bio-Pycnogenol ® and You How much Bio-Pycnogenol ® should you take? Pharma Nord recommends that you take 2 tablets twice daily for the first two weeks, followed by one tablet twice daily thereafter. Is Bio-Pycnogenol ® Safe? Pycnogenol ® boasts one of the most comprehensive science portfolios of any naturally occurring nutritional supplement.
By Anni’s Vital Shop Extensive research has reported the toxicity to be extremely low, with no reports of any significant adverse effects in clinical trial studies. There are no known drug interactions or contra-indications. Pregnant or lactating women, and those on medication, should seek professional advice before taking any nutritional supplement. “Bio-Pycnogenol ® is 30 times stronger than vitamin E in antioxidant activity and 50 times stronger than vitamin C. One of its main uses is as a natural alternative to antihistamines for hay fever and allergies”. Gareth Zeal, Expert Nutritionist. Exceptional Quality and Great Value for Money A price comparison has identified Bio-Pycnogenol ® as the best value for money Pycnogenol ® product in the UK amongst leading high street brands. All nutritional supplements marketed by Pharma Nord are produced to pharmaceutical standards, using Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) – a guarantee of quality and safety and are nanotechnology free. All products conform to EC regulations relating to quality and safety. We adhere to ISO9001 standards and we are a member of the Health Food Manufacturers’ Association.

KEY HEALTH Headaches & Dental Pain
By Chris Weir, Sonrisa
Headaches and dental pain have a lot in common. An estimated 80% of headaches are caused by muscle tension. Head pain can trigger toothache and vice versa. Headache and toothache pain are both transmitted by the same sensory nerve, the trigeminal nerve, and pain originating in one branch of the nerve can be referred to other branches of the nerve, causing pain elsewhere. Acute dental pain may spread unilaterally to the head, but rarely crosses the midline, whilst head pain often will spread to both sides of the head and sometimes into the jaws. Sometimes a persistent headache may be the result of a dental problem, and will disappear when the dental problem is treated. Sometimes the headache is secondary to another condition and not the primary cause. Migraine and cluster headaches can cause pain in the lower face and mimic toothache, and sinusitis often causes toothache and jaw ache. Sometimes the toothache can be very convincing and teeth have been root canal treated or extracted when the primary cause was from the sinuses. Dental conditions that can trigger headaches: 1. Bruxism (nocturnal grinding) 2. Temporo mandibular joint dysfunction 3. Badly aligned bite 4. Dental abscess 5. Post extraction infection 6. Pulpal pain 7. Impacted wisdom tooth
12
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
All these conditions can cause headaches. Headaches from dental stress are a type of muscle tension headache. Normally it is on one side of the head, but can also be on both sides. The pain feels like a non-throbbing ache (dull). Indications of dental origin: 1. Pain behind the eyes 2. Sore jaw muscles 3. Teeth grinding 4. Clicking jaw 5. Head and scalp tender to touch The most probable, common, dental cause of headaches is TMJ disfunction (temporo mandibular joint). Approximately 24% have associated headaches and facial pain caused by trauma, occlusal interferences and emotional stresses. TMJ dysfunction can be corrected by: 1. Posture & stretching exercises 2. Wearing a bite correcting appliance 3. Muscle relaxants 4. Sometimes corrected with surgery The condition is associated with limited jaw opening, clicking noise from the joint, and tenderness of the joint. Once successfully treated, the headaches normally resolve within 3 months. So, if you suffer from persistent recurring dull headaches, it is worthwhile visiting your dentist for a full dental examination to exclude causes of dental origin, which may be the primary cause of your pain, and will resolve when they are treated.

KEY HEALTH Why is PSA Testing so Important in Men’s Health? Men are often renowned for taking risks, generally you get a kick out of living life in the fast lane and acting as if you are invincible; sadly this is mission impossible! Looking at recent trends, the incidents of prostate and testicular cancers are increasing sharply. With a few simple changes to your lifestyle, you could dramatically improve your well being, your functioning and durability as well as your stamina and performance. Prostate Cancer Prostate cancer is a common cancer in older men. Every year 22,000 men are diagnosed in the UK alone. Around 8 in 10 cases occur in men over the age of 65. It is rare in men under 50. Unlike many other cancers, prostate cancer is often present for many years without you realising it. This is because in many cases the cancer is slow growing and can take many years to cause any symptoms. By the age of 80, more than half of all men will have some cancer cells in their prostate – but only 1 in 30 of them will actually die from it. However some prostate cancers can be fast growing and
By Clinica Medicare
spread to other areas of the body. What is a PSA Test? It is a blood test that measures the level of PSA in your blood. PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen. PSA is a protein made by the prostate which naturally leaks into the blood stream. The PSA level is often raised well before any other symptoms of prostate cancer develop. So the test is a useful tool for early diagnosis and treatment. The benefits of having a Test • It may provide reassurance if the test result is normal • It can help detect prostate cancer before any symptoms develop • Treatment in the early stages of prostate cancer could help you live longer and avoid the complications of cancer. A simple blood test carried out annually as a stand-alone test or as part of a more comprehensive yearly health MOT could make all the difference to your future health.

KEY HEALTH Deep Oscillation® Massage Many of us view massage as a luxurious treat that we get on ‘away days’ or holidays but in reality, the benefits of massages are fundamental to our long-term physical and mental well-being. When a general body massage is combined with the Hivamat 200 Deep Oscillation® the body becomes completely and deeply relaxed within a relatively short period of treatment time. I have written about the Hivamat 200 Deep Oscillation® in previous issues of this magazine. Regular readers will know that I am a firm believer in the effectiveness of this machine. I can say from personal experience Deep Oscillation® will always be my first choice of treatment whether I am treating a client with lymphoedema, ulcers, burns, cellulite, surgery aftercare, fibromyalgia or sports injuries to name just a few.
By Pat Kaines
Deep Oscillation® is a gentle non-invasive, relaxing massage that can be applied all over the body. It quickly improves circulation, thus allowing fresh oxygen to be pumped to the organs and the skin. Nagging aches and pains reduce, tight tense muscles are relaxed, back /shoulder stress knots can be sorted out without further pain being caused. Sleep, during or following this type of massage is easily achieved. A normal massage often results in a sleeping client but with Deep Oscillation® this happens very quickly. Mental stresses and strains disappear as the mind and body welcomes the deep, rhythmic, low electrostatic impulses which are characteristic of this treatment. Patricia is available for treatments at Clinica Medicare in La Cala de Mijas. For further information please call the clinic on 952 835 776 or call Patricia directly on 666 170 868.

KEY HEALTH Make the Difference in 2014
By Anne Stark
It’s official – on 1st January we all start a new diet and join the gym! Some people actually do it and others just talk about it, as they have done in years gone past. Maybe it is worth thinking differently about your body, for example how to cleanse it from the inside? Pancreatic and Liver Cancer are silent killers, hard to detect and a small chance of survival once diagnosed. So what should we do? Detox The body is detoxing naturally every day. However, depending on what you eat, how you live your life and how your body performs, natural detoxing often needs some help. It is always best to turn to the professionals when choosing natural products to aid your detox regime. We all have our favourite Health Food Shop to provide us with the best product knowledge for our individual needs. Anni Dahl is the founder of Anni’s Vital Shop with branches along the coast (see page 11 for the one nearest to you). Anni is a walking encyclopaedia with her vast knowledge of natural health and best remedies for everything; she and her knowledgeable staff can give you this valuable information free of charge and you never feel pushed into buying anything. The right diet and exercise are key ingredients to your wellbeing but other treats such as a lovely massage or facial, an evening at the theatre etc also help! If you need some help to accelerate your progress then try Genie slimming, toning and lymphatic drainage treatments. If you lose a lot of weight, then it is vital to take care of your skin. Dry brushing is an old but effective remedy for body exfoliation. Genie Take 10 is a muscle builder for your facial muscles. After just the first session, and in very short treatments, you will already see the difference – guaranteed! For the best results, please do not be fooled by imitations and also make sure your therapist is certified to operate Genie Complete. By the end of February I will have completed a 5-month refresher course in deep tissue massage. New techniques and general knowledge will ensure your massage with me is of the highest standard. My excellent, heated massage bed will make your treatment even more enjoyable at this time of year! I specialise in massages to treat sports injuries, tension and for general well-being. KEY HEALTH Positively Pink & Positively Blue’s 2014 Screening Programmes Commence
We are delighted to advise that both the Positively Pink and Positively Blue screening programmes for this year have already commenced. Positively Pink & Positively Blue are the Mijas-based charities with the sole aim to raise the necessary funds to provide education, support and a FREE breast or prostate/testicular screening for British Men and Women living on the Costa del Sol. For the ladies, “Positively Pink” offers a comprehensive (Gold Standard) screening process that includes a consultation, physical examination, health education as well as a mammogram or ultrasound, in some cases both. As well as this, ladies will also receive a translation into English of the result(s). The lifetime risk of developing breast cancer is one in nine. Each year there are approximately 41,000 new diagnoses. The incidence of breast cancer for men is on the increase too with approximately 300 new cases diagnosed yearly in the UK. It has been shown that early detection of breast cancer can improve the outcome. Survival rates from breast cancer have improved partly in recent years due to early presentation and from individuals being breast aware. The risk of breast cancer increases with age. 80% of breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50 though Positively Pink believes that screening should be available to all women from 18 years of age. For the men, “Positively Blue” offers a free consultation and PSA blood test as well as education and awareness on how to self examine. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, with more than 30,000 men diagnosed annually. Around 10,000 men die from it every year, making it the second most common cause of cancer deaths in men. Testicular cancer affects 1 in 500 men between the ages of 15 and 50. Often in the early stages Prostate cancer has no symptoms. Both screening programmes are carried out in conjunction with Clinica Medicare, a nurse-led British health centre based in La Cala de Mijas. Dr. David Deardon, a UK-trained Breast Specialist, oversees the screening programme for Positively Pink (he also heads up The British Surgical Clinic). Dr. Wolfgang Kleimeier is a Specialist in Urology and he oversees the Positively Blue screening programme (he also heads up Clinica Urologica in Marbella). Clinica Medicare, Dr. Deardon and Dr. Kleimeier all provide their time, clinic space and expertise free of charge to the charity.
By PP & PB A Special Message from the Charities’ Founder: Lorraine Palmer, the founder of both Positively Pink & Positively Blue, continues to believe that “early detection is your best protection”. She would like to thank everyone who continues to support the charities, from our small team of volunteers who work tirelessly (especially Pat & Lee Jay from YJT Inland Radio, who give so much) to those who have attended the programmes and made a donation, through to all the local businesses that have given so generously to ensure that we have sufficient funds to continue this potentially lifesaving work in the years to come. A special thank you must be given to Sarah Hawes, Director of Cambridge 800 Spain whose generosity knows no bounds! What can YOU do to help Positively Pink & Positively Blue, Costa del Sol? If you would like to host or organise an event (such as a coffee morning, sponsored walk/run), have an event in mind, would like to help us raise awareness or you would like to get involved with the charity please get in touch on Tel: 952 835 776 or email: info@positively-pink.com Alternatively you can support these great charities by participating/attending or supporting one of the planned events for 2014 which are on the Events page in this magazine. Positively Pink & Positively Blue campaigns will run through to mid-December 2014. Appointments will be available every Tuesday for ladies and every other week for men, at Clinica Medicare in La Cala de Mijas, 952 835 776. In 2014 we aim to offer 1,000 breast screening appointments to ladies and 200 screenings for prostate and testicular cancer to the men. We would encourage people to book their appointments for 2014 sooner rather than later, as in 2013 all of the men’s appointments for the whole programme were booked within a very short space of time. As in previous years, these screenings are offered FREE of charge. All that the charity asks of attendees to either of the programmes, is to make a donation to assist in funding future years’ programmes. For more information about Positively Pink & Positively Blue please visit our websites: www.positively-pink.com/www.positively-blue.com or follow us on Facebook.

KEY FEATURE Costa Cancer Help Group Grows Cancer Sucks Spain is a Facebook group that started about five months ago. We have over 150 members who feel the benefit from having a group where they are able to chat, vent, scream or offer advice. Our group is open to anyone who has been affected by cancer. Many of our members have become close and offer each other suppor t in many ways. As the group began to grow, we thought it would be nice to have a coffee morning to meet up and chat, which we did a few times; that then grew into the AECC in Carvajal inviting us to hold our meetings at their venue. This was wonderful news for us as the AECC is a Spanish suppor t organisation. Our group is now able to benefit from many of their services such as yoga classes, meditation, massage etc. They also offer many other services and help with paperwork, forms and entitlements. It has been a wonderful oppor tunity for us to merge more with the Spanish. Anyone is invited to join our group. Unfor tunately, like cancer, we do not discriminate. KEY FEATURE Worry, Worry Worry! Dear Joy Help needed! I’m writing on the off chance you can help me with some business problems I’m having. I’ve had a small business for four years and have really enjoyed working for myself but over the last 6 months things have started to go very wrong. I seem to have lost all my motivation, I feel very stressed, I can’t sleep and I’m in a constant state of worry. I would really like to continue my business but I get so overwhelmed with it all I can’t focus and concentrate on what needs to be done. I would really like some help and your thoughts on this. Thanks Garry Dear Garry I totally understand there are many people going through the same situation but the good news is there are solutions. It’s very easy to feel overwhelmed when you get tired and worried; it can turn into a vicious circle and you can’t see the wood for the trees. You need to give yourself some head space to find a new way forward. Trying to control things on the ‘outside’ is usually quite impossible, so we have to connect to ourselves from the inside. The best and only way is to stop and take a breath and relax. May sound crazy but it works every time! Here are a few ideas and a good place to start. Step 1. Get a note pad and pen. Step 2. Give yourself some you time and find a quiet place to sit and relax for 5 minutes; breathe really deeply and let go. Try as much as possible to clear your mind and focus on your heart, breathing and letting go. Relax, let go, release. Step 3. In this relaxed state make a list of all the things you need to do, you can prioritize this later. The idea is to clear a space in your mind to get back into the flow. Step 4. Draw a line down the middle of the page and in list 1 write down all the things you’re great at, your achievements, all the things you’re proud of that you feel good about. List 2 - List the things you need to improve and that you don’t feel
By Joy Fahey good about. I‘ll put money on the first list being the longer! Feels good doesn’t it? This gives you a boost of confidence and lifts your self esteem. You see when you are stuck and overwhelmed, a bit like your computer when it goes into overload, you have to switch it off and let it rest before rebooting it! Same with the mind, you have to stop and take a breath. This little exercise helps you put things in perspective, it shifts your energy and focus, frees up energy and space to see a clearer path forward. All of us can get so wrapped up with the problem, it can overtake us and nothing moves forward and has a knock on effect to everything we do. Once we clear the path, we can make a new plan, re-establish our goals and purpose and get back in control of it rather than it having control of us. Usually the problem isn’t as big as you think, it just seems that way when it’s running round your head at 2am! Writing it all out unquestionably helps and gives you the opportunity to evaluate things better. I hope that helps you get started; let me know how you get on. Kind Regards Joy

KEY FEATURE Dario Meets TV Star Alan De Ward On Saturday the 25th of January a gathering of guests celebrated Scotland’s favourite son, the famed poet philosopher Robbie Burns on “Burns Night” that was held at the Tamisa Golf Hotel. The popular hotel owned by John Peach, a Scot himself, was decorated with Scottish banners. The glamorous event was filled to capacity and as the guests arrived, many were dressed in Scottish tartan regalia. I was there to take some photos of the event, when I heard the distinctive sounds of the bagpipes being played to welcome the guests and to my surprise, there was my neighbour and showbiz colleague, Alan de Ward, a star of German TV, confidently playing the bagpipes and perfectly attired in classical Scottish dress. Following an exchange of congratulations and niceties, we arranged to meet for this Key Magazine interview. I need to mention, that after I wrote the music to the song “Marbella Marbella,” it was Alan de Ward who first heard it, saw the potential in the song, and recognised the value of my idea for the campaign to promote Marbella, especially and the Costa del Sol, against the negative international propaganda that the coast was experiencing at that time. So he and I sat down at his lovely home in Puebla Aida and together we wrote the English lyrics that were later registered in Alan’s name with S.G.A.E Malaga. Following a meeting with David Mairs, the popular musician entertainer, David recorded Alan in his Fuengirola studio. So Alan was the first artist to sing this song and it was played on radio stations up and down the Coast. After his version was sent to Germany, I received a couple of phone calls from the popular German singer/ TV star, Roberto Blanco, who told me that this song “was the hit of the summer” and showed interest in it. Alan De Ward still sings this song wherever he performs, and he told me he always receives positive responses from the audiences, not only in Spain but also abroad. I asked Alan how his show business life began and shyly smiling he began. “I was introduced to show business

from an early age, through my mother and grandfather and moved to Germany in 1966 and together with my brother John, we started a children’s show, which was a big success all over the country. In 1971, John and I formed the ‘The Ward Brothers’, a musical comedy act, which started us climbing the show business ladder and following years of effort and dedication, in 1982 we performed our first TV show on Germany’s ZDF channel. More shows followed throughout East and West Germany. During this time we were also performing in Austria, Switzerland and Holland; doing over 20 Galas a month, meeting and working with all the top international artists. The Ward Brothers also worked in theatre, which was always a 1–2 month engagement. We performed all over the world: in the UK, at Blackpool’s Winter Garden, in London’s Café Royale and also in Monte Carlo. We also performed in a German musical entitled ‘Swinging London’ and performing shows on cruise ships, led us to travelling round the world 4 times entertaining the passengers which we enjoyed immensely. As well as the hundreds and hundreds of live shows we performed, we have recorded various songs, including ‘Forget All My Yesterday Lovers’ and ‘What A Shame’. Impressed by his professional achievements, I asked Alan what brought him and his attractive wife Inga to Spain. “It was in 2000, looking for sunshine, I decided to live and work in Spain; starting my solo career under the stage name of Alan de Ward and as I sing, play the pan pipes, the bagpipes, plus various other instruments, I began performing up and down the coast on the Costa del Sol and of course, I enjoy a good game of golf and play as often as engagements permit, and where better to play, than here in this glorious weather.” As I left Alan, I reflected on how many interesting artists I have been fortunate to meet since I came to Spain, and Alan de Ward is most certainly one of those talents. KEY FEATURE Making Scents (continued) Harry took the large shepherd’s pie from the oven. He had put lots of grated cheese on top before browning it to a deep caramel colour. “Is there any pudding Dad?” Ricki’s eyes lit up at the sight of the meal. “You know we only have a pudding at the weekend when there’s more time. There’s yogurt in the fridge or you can have fruit,” Harry smiled as he dished up Kristin’s meal. “Yuk – I hate yogurt. It’s lap sap.” Nina screwed up her nose in disgust. “Well, don’t have any then,” Kristin said. “Have an apple –it’s good for your teeth.” She ignored the sulking that followed this remark as she tucked into the meal. Ricki was the first to finish his food, scraping every last scrap onto his fork with a knife before starting to taunt Nina, “Lap sap Chung, lap sap Chung.” “All right, that’s enough.” Harry only had to look at Ricki with his normally cheerful mouth a straight line and this had the desired effect. “I said some food was lap sap at school the other day and everyone laughed at me. In Hong Kong we all knew what lap sap meant,” Nina whined. “How do you expect them to understand Chinese at an English school, dummy?” Ricki was scornful of his younger sister. “Darling, this is yummy. How would I manage without you?” Kristin smiled appreciatively at Harry. “Oh, I’m sure you’d find a way.” Harry winked. “I had a weird experience today in the salon. A new client went to sleep during her facial and I couldn’t wake her up. In the end I almost had to yell at her and squirt water in her face. I just could not wake her up and she appeared dead.” “So, did she die in the treatment chair?” Nina asked. Deciding to put the family out of their misery, she described the situation. “Eventually, I realised that she was drunk.” Kristin’s eyes were alive with the drama of the events of the afternoon.

By Sue Cross The children found this highly amusing; Harry just chewed and shook his head. “I don’t know,” he said, “I think you attract these dramas. If it’s not one thing, it’s another. And you know that selling these oils is only making more work for yourself. Why can’t you just be content that the salon is doing all right? You seem to thrive on all this excitement and then complain that you’re tired all the time…” Before Kristin could defend herself, the phone rang. “I’ll get it,” she insisted. Harry did not bother to answer the phone, knowing that Kristin preferred to. “Hello,” Kristin bit her tongue – she had almost said, ‘The Works Beauty Salon’ out of habit. “Hi, Kristin – this is Heather. I wondered if you and Harry are free on Saturday evening. I’m having a few friends round for a meal. Are you free?” “Yes, we are – how lovely. What sort of time?” Kristin did not know Heather well. They had met at a Ladies’ Circle talk that she had given to promote the salon and Heather had been in a few times for a facial. “Half seven for eight. I know you must be busy – does that give you enough time?” The women chatted for a while before Kristin rang off. She felt uncomfortable that she had not had anyone around for dinner since the family had returned from Australia, where a business venture had failed. This was not because she did not like entertaining, far from it, but simply that all her energies had been spent on running the business and looking after the family. Her only consolation was that her working life provided plenty of social interaction. It was in this house that she worked, lived and socialized. KEY ASTROLOGY February 2014 - Signs on the Cusp…
By Janet Powell
and More
In previous issues I’ve written articles about the personal planets: Moon, Mercury Venus, Mars and Jupiter and what they represent astrologically, and while most people know their Sun sign and what this means for them personally, there are some who were born on what is called ‘the cusp’ of a sign... this is the point at which the Sun is about to move from one sign into the next. Because this changes from year to year, the sun-sign dates given in daily papers and magazines can often be misleading. As an example, the Sun went into Scorpio at 10.30am GMT on 23rd October in 1956, but in 1955 it didn’t go into Scorpio until 4.30am GMT on 24th October! These varying times apply to all Sun signs. So, if you were born on the cusp of a sign, you know your time of birth and would like to know the correct sign you were born under, write to me with the date, time and place of your birth at the address below and I’ll send you the details. The Sun, Moon and Ascendant are the most significant points in a birth chart but whichever sign and house the sun falls in the chart is where we want to shine. The Moon helps define our emotional development and the sign and house positions show the way in which we express our emotions and nurturing habits. The birth time gives us the sign on the Ascendant; the Rising sign. This is also the sign of the first house which reveals the characteristic way in which we project ourselves to the world and how the world sees us back! Learning astrology may seem complex but once the meaning of each planet, sign and house is learnt using a few short keywords, it becomes very much clearer… i.e. why do we ‘think’ (Mercury) in the way we do? Why do we ‘relate’ (Venus) in the way we do? Take an example birth chart where Mercury (the mind, ideas, communication) is in Aries (active, impulsive, energetic) in the 7th house (one to one and close relationships): this person is likely to be mentally active
26
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
and energetic and somewhat impulsive in the area of personal relationships! This is only a brief example but it shows how you could quite easily start reading your own chart… and come up with amazingly accurate results! Of course this is only part of the process but when you discover just how precise your chart compares with your own life, you may be spurred on to learn more about yourself and what makes you the way you are… why you do the things you do! It is only when we learn about and understand ourselves that we can truly understand others! This is how my journey began more than 30 years ago and why I want to share what I have learnt over those years. To do this, I’m planning a series of Astrology Seminars over the coming months, introducing the basics of astrology to those interested in finding out more on the subject. In the autumn, a Beginners Astrology Workshop will also be held in Fuengirola. If you are interested in attending a Seminar, call or write to me for details. Also for your diary, on 12th March I’ll be joining Sandy from Key Magazine on Mijas 340 International TV when we’ll be talking about astrology and what our cosmic friends have in store over the coming months. Finally, on a parting note, Mercury is currently retrograde in Aquarius until 28th February… in technical terms you may get shocks from the computer or it could break down altogether! Also be careful about leaving cups of coffee near keyboards during this time. Communications over the internet may be the most sensitive to this Mercury retrograde (Uranus (Aquarius) rules the internet) and for once snail mail might actually be more reliable than cyber post! Good luck… Until next time :) Astrology4everyone@yahoo.co.uk 625 987 575. Janet is also available for one to one readings.

KEY SPORTS World Cup Extravaganza
By Steve Billingham
Part 1Memories of Mexico 1986 The obvious ones are Gary Lineker’s goals and Maradona’s ‘hand of god’(boo! hiss!). Manuel Negrete’s spectacular scissor-kick against Bulgaria. The smart goalkeeping and long throw-outs of Morocco keeper ‘Zaki’ and West Germany’s Harald Schumacher to the halfway line and beyond. France keeper Joel Bats blinder against Brazil in the quarter finals saving a Zico penalty and further pens in the shootout – and stinker against Germany in the semis. Brazil keeper Carlos’s outrageous rugby tackle on Bruno Bellone yards outside the box which went unpunished. France back-up keeper Albert Rust with the big Afro coming in for the third place play-off with Belgium, a very entertaining match won by France 4-2 after extra time. It was Rust’s only appearance for his country. Dead ball specialist with the sweet-left peg Bernard Genghini played his only match of the tournament and scored France’s third goal. Poor distribution by Denmark keeper Lars Hogh in the second round match with Spain. Hogh passed out (with his wrong foot) to Jesper Olsen but the ball was awkward and behind Olsen, so he had to turn and for some reason decided to pass it back. The pass was a mile short and off-target and Spain striker Emilio Butragueno raced in to score. Spain won the match 5-1 and Butragueno scored 4. Italy 1990 ‘SupermanMusabah, the flying United Arab Emirates goalkeeper, who dived for everything. Yugoslavia number 6 Jozic had a solid tournament and scored a cracker against Columbia, chesting down on the edge of the area and volleying past Higuita. Maradona snidely clearing off the line with his hand with one of the group games. What about old Des Washington at right-back for USA with Tony Meola in goal and Costa Rica beating Scotland? Bryan Robson always seemed to go off in World Cup games with shoulder injuries, didn’t he? Salvatore Schillaci, who was also known for some reason as ‘Toto’, was an unknown reserve weeks before the tournament but scored 6 goals and won the Golden Boot. Voller and Rijkards ‘spitting duel’-both off. USA 1994 Cafu at right-back for Brazil. Russia stuffing Cameroon in the first round with 40 year old Joseph-Antoine Bell in goal (and 39 year old Thomas N’Kono on the bench), veteran of
28
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
the 82 and 90 World Cups. In 1982 N’Kono wore £2.95 Uhlsport gloves which were available from TV Sports. 42 year old Roger Milla, another veteran of 82 and 90, (4 goals and celebratory dances) came on and scored a consolation goal. Republic of Ireland’s John Aldridge and manager Jack Charlton effing and blinding with officials because there was for some reason a delay with Aldridge coming on. Was it at this World Cup or the 1990 one (or both) where Romanian midfielder, Marius Lacatus, had hair like a beetle? France 1998 Jim Leighton by now 40 flapping hopelessly at something during one of the Scotland group games. Would Matt Elliot have made a difference to the Scotland back 4? Michael Owens wondergoal against Argentina (I was round a friend’s house eating a Chinese meal when that went in) and a perfectly legitimate Sol Campbell header being disallowed. Paul Gascoigne and Matthew Le Tissier (missed 1 penalty ever) were of course left at home. Dennis Bergkamp’s goal against Argentina, a carbon copy of one he had scored earlier in the season for Arsenal against Leicester, and SlavanBillic’s play acting to get France skipper Laurent Blanc sent off. 2013 UK Snooker Championships in a Nutshell The tournament took place at the Barbican Centre in York between 26 November and 8 December. A change in the format meant that the tournament was longer and was open to the top 128 professional players. 7 players withdrew so 7 amateurs were introduced. 21 year old Mitchell Travis ‘took out’ World number 6 Marco Fu and then won another round in a run to the last 32. Also 15 year old Shane Castle performed creditably going down 4-6 to reigning champion Mark Selby, having been surprisingly 3-1 up. There was a first appearance on television for 3 years for Jimmy White although he went down 2-6 to World number 10 Stuart Bingham. ‘Not sure about the 4 table format and this many players in,’ remarked an observer. ‘Some of the matches seem a bit one sided and the standard of snooker in some of them isn’t great.’ Mark Selby knocked in a 147 in his semi-final match with Ricky Walden. Selby cut a tricky black into the middle pocket, by no means a gimme by a stretch to complete the 100th maximum in tournament play. The final was won by Neil Robertson who beat Mark Selby10-7, although Selby missed a black (easier than the one he knocked in for the maximum) along the bottom rail to level it up at 8-8.

KEY COMPUTERS The Big Switch-Off So, it has happened! - At the moment of writing this article, all channels and services from the BBC are unavailable via satellite to the Costa del Sol (and most other areas outside the UK). - The Irish channels, too - There has been no distinction between SD and HD channels, nor between Sky subscribers with or without a “plus” package. - On the 11th February all the ITV services will apparently also be lost and more Freesat channels are due to follow. - All systems based on satellite reception are as from now useless for Freesat channel reception “What’s the fix this time, then?” people ask on the social medias. In short, there is none, unless you bring in the Internet. I shall sum up the situation again very briefly; for further in-depth information about the different options, I refer to my former articles in this magazine, you can have copies of these in our offices. You shall need the Internet in order to obtain your favourite channels; there is no way round it! If you are a resident and here more or less permanently, we recommend the services of our “beloved” Movistar, formerly Telefonica. They are by far the most arrogant and rigid company in Spain, but their actual core product delivers exactly what you need, which is the possibility of a steady connection with enough speed to stream the signal and unlimited traffic. Unfortunately they only accept a minimum contract of 12 months. We are official agents for Movistar and you can contract their services through us in your own language. If you only live here for shorter periods over the year, you can opt for a wireless Internet Provider, there are several in the area, which will install the necessary infrastructure in your home, such as antenna, router, cabling etc. at an initial cost and charge you only for the periods you actually need their services. Normally there is a minimum billing period of a month. Watch out whether you are buying the equipment or only the installation with a right of use. You should make sure the signal received is adequate not only at the moment of the installation but over time, both during the day as well as during peak periods in the season. The latter is of course difficult to initially control and you might want to assess whether the company in question offers you the necessary confidence and guarantee. Needless to say there are many cowboys around; this is the Costa del Sol after all! Again, we can help you out with the choice of provider and do the necessary paperwork in our offices. Once you’ve obtained a satisfactory connection, you should choose

your TV provider. Again, beware, specifically for companies offering you a “good” deal on a yearly subscription. It would not be the first time these would turn out to be resellers of other companies’ signals, only a couple of months later to vanish into thin air with your money, not having paid their original provider and thus leaving you without a signal! If you only wish to watch the news on a daily basis and you’re not fussy about live TV, you could sign up for a VPN tunnel provider. They will channel your internet connection through their system, thus disguising your Internet address (IP), making it possible to watch what’s online on the different websites in the UK, BUT do not expect to get all channels live, nor even a fraction of the programmes formerly available on the satellite. Bear in mind these are all different companies and as such do not promote the competitors’ signal. You will have to constantly swap between websites and you also tie up your computer in order to watch your preferred shows. We recommend an equivalent to the classic STB, Set-Top Box, where you just connect the box to your Internet, then to the television, power it on, and off you go. With a simple remote control you switch between channels from your sofa, just as before the switch off, only through a different box. Again, a vast selection of providers is available. You should ask yourself, in which quality you need to watch your shows, if you can watch them in different places in your home, even different channels at the same time, if there is a catch up service, any radio channels, recording facilities, is my router far away from my television and does this mean extra cabling and finally whether you can watch other inputs, such as Spanish television, cc-tv, blu-ray, dvds etc at the same time. But most important of all, have a look at the system before you decide; we offer you the possibility of a demo of various providers in our shop anytime you wish. Give us a call or just come round whenever you like. We offer you a comparison of signals and systems so you can choose the better option. Whatever you do, make sure you can get a refund of all your installtion fees if you are not happy with the result. Different providers might blame other companies for your lack of signal, so make sure you deal with a company which offers you a global solution. We at WISE are such a company. Finally you might want to take up with your community the possibility of a larger, and maybe more economic solution, if there are enough people interested; we shall be happy to advise you and your community on this in our shop. The address can be found in the advert on this page. Regards, please do not kill the messenger! Hans J. Nielsen Manager, WISE

KEY ARTICLE Winter Testing in Jerez
By Ally Rennie
Welcome to the first of the regular articles on Formula 1 this season. We would like to start off this article by wishing Michael Schumacher a full and speedy recovery after his skiing accident at the end of December. The 2014 Formula 1 Season kicks off with, as always, the winter testing in Jerez. Typically, Jerez provides a variation in track temperatures, weather, air density, not to mention the first chance for the world’s media to see the new cars in action. With huge changes this year in car specification, the testing was eagerly anticipated. Engine rules now incorporating a shift from 2.4-litre V8 engines to 1.6 litre V6 turbo engines should give some interesting results and hopefully a variation to the almost predictable podiums of late. We summarise the week’s testing at Jerez giving the main points of interest: Day 1 Kimi Raikkonen was fastest on the opening day - with limited running throughout the paddock. Raikkonen was the only man to manage more than 20 laps on a day featuring a number of stoppages, the most serious coming when Lewis Hamilton crashed the new Mercedes after a front wing issue. Red Bull and Caterham failed to post timed laps having only joined proceedings late in the day, while McLaren and Marussia weren’t ready to start their testing programmes. With the early running being more about reliability and system checks with the revised regulations rather than outright performance, lap times were notably down on those set in the corresponding test last year and not representative of what is expected during the season ahead. Day 2 Having been forced to skip the first day of Formula 1 pre-season testing, Jenson Button marked the McLaren-Mercedes MP4-29’s track debut by going quickest on day two at Jerez. The British driver completed 43 laps to edge out day one pace setter, Kimi Raikkonen, by just over six tenths, while Williams’ Valtteri Bottas, Nico Rosberg and Sergio Perez ensured Mercedes-powered cars took up four of the top five positions. By contrast, Renault had a disappointing day with Red Bull Racing and Caterham suffering issues, while Scuderia Toro Rosso didn’t make it out on track at all. So far Renault-powered cars have completed just 38 laps in two days, compared with Mercedes on 212 and Ferrari on 100. Day 3 Mercedes-powered cars continued to dominate proceedings during the third day of Formula 1 testing at Jerez, with McLaren rookie, Kevin Magnussen, marking his debut by setting the fastest lap time of the test thus far. His first outing in the MP4-29, Magnussen completed a strong day for the McLaren

team, with day two pace setter, Jenson Button, following up his team-mate in fourth position. The pair were split by a late flyer from Williams’ new signing, Felipe Massa, in second and Lewis Hamilton driving the works Mercedes in third. In all, five Mercedes-powered cars filled the top six, with Fernando Alonso breaking the run in fifth for Ferrari, ahead of Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg. Meanwhile, Sauber’s Adrian Sutil suffered an accident that curtailed his running, Red Bull’s technical issues continued and Marussia made its track debut as Max Chilton completed a handful of untimed installation laps. Day 4 Felipe Massa is quickest for Williams on the final day of running at Jerez as the first test for the latest specification of F1 machinery draws to a close. While some are able to rack up the miles however, Red Bull is forced to head home early after further issues with the new RBV10. Summary One should never read too much into testing times - especially when that test was effectively an extended shake-down. Kevin Magnussen will no doubt be more than happy to leave Spain with the quickest overall time after his debut as a McLaren race driver. This week’s official aggregate top 10 test times from Jerez: 1. Kevin Magnussen, McLaren, 1m 23.276s, 162 laps 2. Felipe Massa, Williams, 1m 23.700s, 133 laps 3. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes, 1m 23.952s, 121 laps 4. Jenson Button, McLaren, 1m 24.165s, 83 laps 5. Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari, 1m 24.812s, 78 laps 6. Valtteri Bottas, Williams, 1m 25.344s, 42 laps 7. Fernando Alonso, Ferrari, 1m 25.495s, 173 laps 8. Nico Rosberg, Mercedes, 1m 25.588s, 188 laps 9. Nico Hulkenberg, Force India, 1m 26.096s, 17 laps 10. Sergio Perez, Force India, 1m 28.376s, 48 laps Total laps run - by team (power unit, where different): 1. Mercedes, 309 2. Ferrari, 251 3. McLaren (Mercedes), 245 4. Williams (Mercedes), 175 5. Sauber (Ferrari), 163 6. Force India (Mercedes), 146 7. Caterham (Renault), 76 8. Toro Rosso (Renault), 54 9. Marussia (Ferrari), 30 10. Red Bull (Renault), 21 From Jerez, the teams will now head back to their respective factories to consolidate their findings and prepare for the second pre-season test, which takes place in Bahrain on February 19-22. Hard Disk Drives vs. Solid-state Drives: Are SSDs finally worth the Money? SSDs today are far more reliable, have greater endurance and perform better. Perhaps the single biggest change, though, is price. In 2009, SSDs cost around 2 Euros per gigabyte. That meant a 120GB SSD cost you more than 200 Euros. If you were paying 500 Euros for a laptop, it wasn’t reasonable to expect to pay almost half that for a new drive. Today, however, SSDs cost close to one-third of what they did in 2009 -- in many cases, less than 1 Euro per gigabyte. For example, Crucial in July announced its new low-cost v4 SSD that costs 70 Euros for a 128GB model and 140 Euros for a 256GB model. One thing hasn’t changed, though: While they may never beat out hard drives in price, SSDs will always have one major advantage: No moving parts. This means no mechanics to break, even when a machine is jostled or dropped. SSDs are natively more resilient than hard drives, particularly when it comes to mobile applications. Standard mechanical hard drives have to physically move an access arm and wait for the disk platters to rotate past the heads. This takes time - a lot of it in computer terms. It takes about a million times longer to access data on a hard drive than it does to retrieve it from RAM. SSDs are entirely electronic. The system still has to go through more hoops to get at SSD data than RAM data, but all of the mechanical delay is eliminated - so SSDs can retrieve data much faster than a hard drive. How much faster depends on how you want to measure it. There are two primary measurements for drive performance: Latency - when you’ve asked for the data, how long do you have to wait before it starts coming back?
38
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
By Marcus Yarwood, Computer City
Transfer Rate - once you start getting the data, how much data per second can you get? Think of latency like looking for a particular passage in a book. It depends on how many pages you have to flip though before you find what you’re looking for. Think of transfer rate like the number of words-per-minute that you can read. Once you’ve found the right page, how long does it take you to read it? The latency of a hard drive (how long it takes to find something) is around 150 times longer than that of an SSD. The transfer rate of a hard drive (how fast it reads once it’s found the file) is around 2 to 3 times slower than an SSD for reading, and (very roughly) similar to an SSD for writing. So the exact performance improvement you’re going to see depends a lot on how many individual things you have to look for and how big they are (the very much shorter latency of an SSD means it’s a LOT faster to look for something, while it’s somewhat faster transfer rate is less of an advantage the bigger the item you’re reading). Booting an OS and starting up application programmes normally means reading lots and lots of small files from the system drive. This is where SSDs really shine - lots of file finding and relatively small file sizes play to its big strength over hard drives - very small latencies. For other uses, the drive will be faster but the difference may not be as dramatic, particularly if you’re writing to the drive. Computercity is now selling refurbished laptops with the option of a Solid State Hard drive upgrade.

KEY FINANCE The UK saw 1.8% y/y sales growth in December. But it wasn’t all a happy story as in all games there are winners and losers. In the winners’ corner were Waitrose, Aldi and Lidl whilst Tesco and Sainsburys were cast as losers. Another big winner came from on line shopping as high street stores continue to adapt to changing shopping needs. The Cooperative Bank remains a storyline as they managed to raise the capital to continue trading and Standard and Poor, the credit reference agency, acknowledged this by upgrading the senior debt from B to B+ as the bank prepares itself for a market placing probably during 2014. The Bank of England left interest rates on hold. Consumers are spending as new car sales rose 11% and employers are suggesting during 2014 they will start to take on more people. KEY LAW Spanish Data Protection
Agency Fines Google Spain
By Victoria Anzola, Iberdata 21
The Spanish Data Protection Agency has fined Google Spain for committing three serious offences against the Data Protection Law, each fine being 300,000 Euros and has verified that: 1. Google Spain illegally collects and uses personal information. 2. They do not provide the user with adequate information about what type of data they collect and for what purpose. This is a serious breach of the users’ right to their personal data protection as recognised in article 18 of the Spanish Constitution and regulated by the LOPD. The sanctions are due to illegal handling of personal data derived from Google’s new privacy policy. BACKGROUND : Illegal use of information. Last April, the Spanish Data Protection Agency sent a letter to Larry Page, CEO of Google, and to the personnel in charge of Google Spain. These actions were aimed at examining if Google’s uses of private data following their new privacy rules respect the Spanish and European Data Protection Laws and also to determine, who is liable in this case.
The Spanish Data Protection Agency (AGPD) has imposed penalties totaling 5,000 Euros on two jewellery companies for misuse of cookies. The AGPD, responsible for ensuring compliance with the Data Protection Act (LOPD), Internet and Cookies Laws (LSSICE), acted against two companies after a denunciation by a citizen who accused them of failing to supply information on their websites about cookies or seek consent for use. The AGPD considered that these companies linked to cookies in third-party websites without informing the users in a clear manner on the use of these cookies. The AGPD considered that the use of cookies by the jewellery companies was carried out without the users’ consent and in breach of any the provisions of the LSSICE computer Laws. Various fines of 1,500 Euros, 3,000 Euros and 5000 Euros have been imposed. Iberdata21 helps your company comply with the law by training workers and offering our services. All our training and our services are available in both Spanish and English.
INSPECTION: The inspection proceedings have now determined that Google collects personal information via almost one hundred different products and services that they offer in Spain: - without in many instances providing adequate information in regard to what data they are collecting - to what aims this data is used for - without obtaining valid consent from the users Against the requirements of Spanish legislation, Google stores and keeps personal data for indeterminate or unjustified periods of time, thus contravening the legal obligation of proceeding to the destroy the data when it ceases to be necessary for the use for which this data was originally required. When treating personal data we must always state clearly who is going to handle this data, ask for consent to use the data and to explain clearly and simply the uses/aims for which this data will be used. RESTAURANTE LA MANDRÁGORA Calahonda’s Premier Restaurant specialising in the finest International Haute Cuisine with a Mediterranean twist. Established 25 years, and situated on the middle floor of CC El Zoco. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 7.00 pm. Open kitchen and decor combines modern design and traditional European decor with many antiques and paintings by Slovakian artist, Jaro Jelenek, adorning the walls. Small terrace overlooking the Mediterranean and a much larger terrace outside the entrance. Service always very attentive and friendly. Owner, Rudolf, pays great attention to detail and is constantly sourcing new products from the freshest of ingredients and coming up with new, innovative ideas, which are expertly prepared by chef, Mario Kasala. Some of the dishes that have excited diners at La Mandrágora over the years are starter dishes such as Chicken below 0, marinated fried chicken strips with olive oil ice cream over coloured lettuce, seasonal fruits and Greek yoghurt. Another firm favourite is Caesar’s mushrooms sautéed with spring onions – you really must try this! Main course favourites are the Slovakian Beef Goulash, which I always enjoy, and the Lamb Fillet with sugarcane honey and balsamic vinegar reduction is also highly recommended. Please leave room for a delicious dessert – I personally love the Apple Strudel but there are many more to choose from. La Mandrágora is also renowned for its extensive and excellent wine list of which the staff are very knowledgeable and can help you choose the perfect wine to complement your meal. Please see main advert for comments made by Easyjet Magazine, Enrique Bellver, the renowned Diario Sur critic, and the Essential Magazine Marbella. Enjoy this gem! KEY ENTERTAINMENT What’s on at the Salon Varietes The Salon Varietes Theatre in Fuengirola had a good start to what should be a good Spring. British culture was shown at its best in the pantomime which received high praise from the audience and excellent takings at the Box Office. This is a major source of revenue as the theatre receives no grants so beating last year’s panto attendance by nearly 300 began 2014 in high style. Then American culture was on display with a breathtaking performance by Bobby Aaron in ‘Zelda’. The appetite for serious work is alive and well on the Costa del Sol and it was well served with this piece. From 21st to 23rd February, a play which has been devised by a stalwart of the theatre, Stephen Burns, about Oscar Wilde, The Importance of Being Oscar, comes after a hugely successful professional tour of Ireland. Our big Spring Musical is ‘Whistle Down the Wind’ by Andrew Lloyd Webber. This opens on the 21st March and runs to the 30th. This will be a premiere in Spain of the West End and Broadway hit and directed by Peter Mitchell, the standard will be high.
By Graham Cherry
Scattered through the theatre programme are a series of one off performances by local entertainers. The theatre gives them an opportunity to show their work and range in a different context. On 27th February there will be a tribute to Ray Charles followed on March 1st by a St. David’s Day evening with special guest Ricky Lavazza, who doesn’t sound Welsh but is. Into April we have ITS from Marbella with the Peter Brook’s production of The Anniversary. That’s 4th to 6th. Peter is back as director of the theatre’s own production of ‘Fawlty Towers’ from April 25th to 30th. David Vincent will Basil away. It will be a busy spring but with lots of good things to look forward to. Timings of all our shows are each night at 8 but on Sunday at 7. The Box Office number is 952 47 45 42 and Sarah Jane or Helen will be there from 11.00 to 2.30 each day except Sunday and for an hour before curtain up on show nights. For more information, check out our website, http://www. salonvarietestheatre.com/ or on Facebook - The-SalonVarietes-Theatre.

Have you ever seen those programmes on TV about famous footballers and other celebrities that have their super cars cleaned by a professional detailing company? A complete polish, for example, can take up to two days, depending on individual requirements. We can now accommodate you on the coast with this service. With many years’ experience in Scotland we bring the service to you here on the coast. Just see the photos yourself and for more information, see their website. They do boats, cars, motorcycles, trucks or even bring your property up to the highest standard. Just call for a friendly chat. They guarantee your car, boat or property will look unbelievably better. As some of you may know, we have a 1989 Toyota which had recently had a valet and wax. We called … They had a good look round the car and expressed how much better they could make it look. So, as usual with us, believing the proof is in the pudding, we watched our car being washed and leathered, special lights were set up around the car and the process began. We were absolutely astounded at the finish of the paintwork. Please check out the photos above to see the difference and once the whole car was completed, it looked like it was new. It is now also protected against all the elements, sun, rain, sand in the air, wind etc. Now all the car needs is a wash and leather and the shine is maintained. Warm, friendly service. toughening plant which means that the complete glass curtain system, including the glass, is manufactured under one roof. We also manufacture UPVC and Aluminium windows and doors. The Glass Curtain system that we manufacture is a German system, it is typical of German design; much time and thought has gone into the system making it one of, if not the best, system available on the market today. The system is completely different to other systems that are of similar money. It is top hung which means that the weight of the glass is distributed evenly and not all sitting on the bottom, rubbing metal against metal. This system runs on stainless steel wheels and bronze ball bearings, each panel of glass has four holes drilled into it so that the profile can be bolted to the glass as well as glued. This is the only system to do this; all other systems are merely glued to the profile. Other companies will claim that a bottom hung system is better; however as glass manufacturers who make our own glass and understand the weight that is involved per square meter for 10mm glass, we know that the best way for a system to function correctly is to hang the glass so as not to impose such weight and strain onto the system below, causing scraping and juddering over a period of time and regular use. Our system has undergone many tests, including an opening and closing test of over 10,000 cycles and also a wind test of up to 2,000 Pascals; all the test documentation can be viewed at our offices. For any information, please email us on rdmcsglass@hotmail. com or check out our website on www.rdmcsglass.com or see our Facebook page for regularly updated installations.
