At last it looks like the warmer weather is here and hopefully this, coupled with a late Easter, will bring the visitors flocking back to Mijas Costa and make you gloomy lot a bit happier! Nevertheless, from the Namaste Holistic Centre in Cabopino to the Nutty Bar in Marbella, we still have lots for you to read in this issue!

Starting with the Namaste Holistic Centre, local practitioners now have a great venue to receive clients and we, the general public, can also benefit from very reasonably priced courses and classes too! For more information, please see page 11.

It never ceases to amaze me how generous the residents of the Costa are, even in times of crisis, when it comes to organising charity events for those less fortunate. KEY BEAUTY Hair Extensions

This month I am going to talk about hair extensions. There are many different types of hair extensions on the market today as they have grown in popularity. People keep coming up with new ideas on how to put them in.

Extensions aren’t for everyone. If you have fine, thin, broken hair (that you want to make thicker) or short hair (that you want to make longer) then I can help you.

Everyone that is thinking of having extensions asks the same questions: DO THEY DAMAGE MY HAIR? They absolutely don’t if they are put in correctly. Make sure the stylist doing them has experience and ask to see pictures of their previous work.

HOW MUCH DO THEY COST? Extensions don’t have to be expensive if you want more volume (which is what I have) because your hair is lank, fine, broken or very straight (we have wavy extensions). You will need between 10 and 35 extensions – the cost is from 3 Euros each, depending on the length you want. By putting in 20 extensions at the cost of 60 Euros you can completely change the style of your hair. You will be amazed at the difference! You can also wear your hair up and no one can tell you have extensions because the bands are so small.

If you want long hair, then the cost goes up. The more hair you have, the more extensions you will need to cover the line of yours. So, for a full head of hair, you need between 60 (for fine hair) to 100-120 for thick hair, so from 180 Euros to 400 Euros (for really long hair).

KEY HEALTH Namaste Holistic Centre The Namaste Holistic Centre (formerly Cabopino Holistic Centre) is a non-profit organisation run by Marleen Gosselin who some of you may remember used to organise the Health & Beauty festivals in Calahonda. Marleen has a particular interest in the holistic approach in all its forms to keep both the body and the mind fit and healthy. Marleen invites all practitioners of any type of holistic disciplines to contact her with a view to using the centre for events, workshops or on a regular basis for classes and therapies for a small donation.

For members of the public, some events are offered free of charge; just offer a small donation to the centre to help with running costs. Many other courses, workshops and classes are at a fraction of the cost you will find elsewhere.

The centre was opened in November 2013 and has enjoyed such events as the first Reiki Circle in March, which I attended and was very well received.

KEY HEALTH Sea Buckthorn Oil – Omega 7 What is Sea Buckthorn Oil? Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is a berry bush found in Asia and Europe. The berry has been used in traditional Asian medicine for more than one thousand years. In the past few decades, scientist from the University of Turku, Finland have carried out extensive research into sea buckthorn which has resulted in an improved understanding of the health effects the berry has to offer.

Today everybody wants the perfect smile and bright white teeth. With many makeover programmes on television, people are becoming more aware of cosmetic treatments to enhance their appearance and look younger. Tooth whitening is a simple, non-invasive procedure that can enhance a person’s appearance and confidence.

Why whiten your teeth?

1. To look younger 2. To be more attractive 3. To be more confident What causes staining and discolouration?

1. Genetic factors, some people’s dentine is yellow, brown or grey. This shows through the enamel to make the teeth look dark 2. Wear and tear or illness, can affect the colour of teeth 3. Tea, coffee, red wine, cola and smoking all cause staining and darkening of the teeth.

4. Build up of tartar, cracks in enamel and root canal treatment can affect the colour of teeth.

What can’t be whitened?

1. All ceramic restorations, crowns, veneers, bridges, dentures will not change colour with whitening agents.

2. Root canal treated teeth that go dark will need special internal bleaching to change colour. External whiteners will not work.

All natural teeth will whiten, but the degree of change depends on the underlying colour of the teeth. Gray teeth don’t whiten as well as yellow and brown. Yellow often give the best results.

Tooth whitening is safe and effective if used properly, and doesn’t damage the teeth. Side effects are few, sometimes it may cause sensitivity, but this is only temporary, and will improve after a few days.

How long does it last? Up to 3 years at best, but results will vary, and will be influenced by coffee, tea, smoking, red wine etc. You can top up your whitening when you feel they are darkening again, but the results will be better if done after a scale and polish at the dentist.

1. Tray whitening system 2. Light activated in surgery whitening 3. Over the counter take home whitening 4. Whitening toothpaste 1.The tray system involves taking impressions of your teeth and making precision fitting whitening trays. Then your teeth are cleaned thoroughly in the surgery and you whiten your teeth at home with the special gels provided. This normally takes 1-2 weeks to complete and the results are very good.

You normally leave the gels in for 2-3 hours or overnight for faster results. You control how far you whiten your teeth, and you can repeat the treatment over and over again with the trays, all you may need is to buy some more gel later.

The gels used are gentle and less likely to cause sensitivity.

2. With the in surgery light activated systems you whiten the teeth in 1 hour. This involves using much stronger gels and you are more prone to sensitivity, and sometimes the teeth may go darker after 2-3 days. The main disadvantage is that you will have to pay for the whole process again to top up your whitening later.

3. Over the counter systems tend to take a long time for whitening to occur and the results tend not to be as good. This is because they can only use gels with a very low concentration of bleaching agent and the process will take many applications.

4. Whitening toothpastes can enhance the effect of whitened teeth, and will improve the appearance of your teeth. They owe much of their effect to the silca abrasives in the paste which remove stains on the teeth. The whitening agents are unlikely to have much effect because their concentrations are very low and they are only in contact with the teeth for a few minutes.

Yes, you can whiten your teeth, improve your appearance and confidence without damaging your teeth. Which system you choose depends on which you prefer, both the tray system and light activated whitening will whiten your teeth, but if you can wait 1-2 weeks, you will get better results with the tray system, and you are in control of how white you want to go.

KEY HEALTH What is Psychotherapy: Is it for me There are many types of psychotherapy and today at least one in five people will seek this help at some point in their lives. Talking therapy is advocated more within the NHS than ever before; it is now recommended as part of the treatment for those suffering with anxiety and depression as well as addictions to various substances or damaging behaviours.

There is a lot of confusion about the differences between psychotherapy, counselling, psycho-analysis and behavioural therapies.

“Infinitely more important than the answers are the questions; the choice of them, the inner form of them.” Oswald Spengler.

Normally, counselling is used to address less serious or profound issues.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy may be used to help change deeply entrenched behaviours which are causing distress to the client.

Life coaching is a form of counselling which some people seek to address a situation they are in, or the management of any goal they have, in order to find alternative ways of achieving it. This can mean changing their whole approach to any given situation which has been informed by their pattern of behaviour or thinking over the years.

Psychotherapy is a more profound approach to an issue where the client wants to understand at a more core level, the reasons for their thinking, behaviour or emotional pain. They wish to get to know themselves in a way that leads to better understanding and self-acceptance.

Psycho-analysis may have moved on since the days of Freud and Jung, but it is often quoted as being the “inactive approach” where the client assumes the role of patient rather than taking a more active

part in the process of therapy. I am sure that today’s analysts would disagree, but in my experience many people found this approach patronising and judgemental.

Therapy or counselling should address the whole person, their situation in life and be empathic with a non-judgemental approach. It is not the role for anyone, however well-qualified, to sit in judgement on another. No-one can experience life for us and no-one should tell us how we feel about a situation. A therapist or counsellor should never impose their goals upon a client. They can help us re-construe our experiences in life but never negate the impact of them.

Some people find therapy or counselling a threatening process and it is essential that the psychotherapist is skilled in their practice to limit the amount of unnecessary anxiety for the client. It is to be expected that a certain amount of anxiety will be present at any time of change whether this change is positive or negative.

Resistance to change is a human response to the unknown and it is essential that anyone thinking about seeing a therapist or counsellor researches well to access one with correct qualifications and insurance in order to be safe in the process of self-discovery. KEY HEALTH Spanish Charity Event at Tamisa Golf Hotel On Sunday 25th May, the charitable organisation, Animal Care España, (ACE) in collaboration with Passion Studio at the Tamisa Golf Hotel in the Camino Viejo de Coín will hold a CHARITY afternoon. This will start at 16.30 – dress code SPANISH! Fabienne is the President of ACE Spain. Almost weekly she visits the Killing stations which continue to exist to buy and free as many dogs as possible to save them from death.

ACE saves nearly 1,500 dogs per year. Every dog, sick, old or lame gets a second chance at ACE. The number of dogs is increasing while income and donations are going down. Moreover Spain is suffering from a severe and prolonged recession. Luckily there is help. More than 250 volunteers in several countries are working on a daily basis to support ACE Spain in different ways. A successul formula in which they all share the fate of Spanish dogs in need.

Our goal with this Charity is to raise money with an Auction for an Ultrasound-machine for the clinic at the rescue centre of ACE. This machine will cost about 4,000 Euros. Some

KEY FEATURE Dario Meets Linda Mairs

In my quest for interesting and individualistic people, one lady who has never failed to interest me is Linda Mairs, married to the Costa’s most popular entertainer, David Mairs.

Despite many set-backs in her life, her optimistic nature, positivity, stubbornness, and strength of character have at times influenced me also, so I asked Linda to tell us a little about herself and life.

Linda where do you come from?

I was born in a small village in the west of Scotland, the youngest of four, I was well looked after, some may even say spoiled, looking back, and I have lots of happy memories growing up. Being a teenager in the sixties I spent most of my time listening to music , the ‘Beatles’, ‘The Who’, and the ‘Rolling Stones’; the music scene was buzzing.

In the summer of ‘69 I went to hear a well know band called ‘The Mode’, that was the night I was introduced to the keyboard player David Mairs. After some would say a short time together, we were married in 1971. I was 17 years old and David was 20; everyone tried to tell us we were too young, they said that it would never last.

We started our new life together and soon became a family, with a son Robert, daughter Linda and our foster daughter Alison. We are still very happily married 44 years later - we proved them all wrong!

Like many young mothers my career had a slow start, working several part time jobs, facilitated of course by free child care more commonly known as “Gran” - thanks mum! After a short spell in retail I quickly realised a flare for sales, advertising sales to be precise. I joined ‘Motor Market Weekly’ a position which incidentally gave me an introduction to the HRH Queen Elizabeth at an international car fair. She’s a big car fan you know, always checking out the classic section.

I soon climbed the ranks to become the ‘Agency Advertising Manager’ with ‘Norton Opax International Publishing’. Our clients included ‘British Airways’, British Caledonian, Trust House Forte, Ladbrokes and several other International companies. I was then asked to set up the Scottish Division of the company.

I was involved in marketing and promotion of various “in flight” magazines for several airlines and the official Scottish tourist board guides. This enabled me to build up substantial business contacts and clients in the travel and leisure industry.

In 1991 the children had left school and we had a family meeting to discuss how they would feel about going to live in Spain. Later that year we arrived here and fell in love with the Costa del Sol. We had a successful, live music family bar in Fuengirola for

many years, and my husband was making a pretty good name for himself as a very talented musician too. However the turn of the new millennium brought with it a time for change and a return to familiar pastures for me.

I started working here with local radio ‘Fizz Fm’ selling air time and advertising in their magazine, also working freelance on other publications, exhibitions, wedding fairs and events.

In 2007, I meet ‘Tanya Frances’ a graphic designer who was interested in starting a new publication. We started working together and produced the very successful Home and Lifestyle magazine until 2010.

Sadly I had to leave my much loved magazine, as a combination of very unfortunate events led me to a discovery that would change everything. .....

Cancer knocked on my door, as it had my mother, father and older sister. It was one of the most frightening experiences of my life, I wasn’t ready for it, but then who is ever ready. With strength, that initially I didn’t know I had, and the support of a wonderful family and friends, I’m here and doing well.

When I returned to Spain after having my treatment in Scotland I needed to be working, so I started my own marketing and events Company. This in turn led to being offered the position of advertising and events manager for the prestigious and well known, Restaurante Mijas Playa.

Later the following year I was offered the role of sales manager with the very popular Lifestyle magazine and I am still currently enjoying this position. I also consult with various companies on marketing strategies, campaigns and events.

Previously David and I worked with Dario Poli, a fellow Scot, an artist and writer, on the ‘Marbella Marbella’ song and campaign promoting a positive image of said town.

Now in 2013 we are back together and after much brain storming , imagination, song writing and David and Dario spending many long hours in the recording studio, creating some spectacular music, it was completed.

We now have a fantastic new musical called ‘Amsterdam I Am’ from the new novel “It Happened in Amsterdam” almost completed along with a new video.

I will be involved in the marketing and promotional events in Spain and the UK, while Dario has many contacts in Holland where it has already been creating a buzz and generating much interest and receiving a complimentary message from the Deputy Mayor of Arts and Culture in Amsterdam, Carolien Geherels.

Who knew I would be assisting in the conception and construction of a new musical called ‘Amsterdam’?

The next-door neighbour’s teenage daughter, Annie Atkins, rang the bell on the dot at seven thirty the following Saturday evening. Although her appearance was sometimes a bit extreme, she was a sensible girl and could be trusted to babysit without having friends around drinking and smoking. She stood at the door, munching an apple.

“Hello, Kristin. I’ve brought my homework with me.

We’ve got a history exam on Monday and I just can’t seem to remember all these dates.” Annie wore the latest platform-heeled sandals that made her over six feet tall, bellbottom trousers, a halter neck top and startling blue glittery eye shadow.

“Come in, come in. Oh, I struggled remembering dates for history. I crammed to get my exams but now the only date I can remember is 1066,” she laughed, putting Annie at ease.

“You look nice. I like your dress,” Annie said, admiring the simple blue dress that Kristin wore. What Annie did not know was that Kristin had not been able to afford any new clothes for years.

“Thanks – it’s my favourite colour. Nina and Ricki are both in bed. I said they could read until late as there’s no school tomorrow.” Kristin checked the mirror before calling out, “Harry, are you ready?”

Harry appeared from the sitting room where he’d been reading the paper. “I’ve been ready for ages. Hello, Annie.”

Nina and Ricki, already in their pyjamas, hurried downstairs to see Annie, who they found rather exotic, although Ricki would never admit it. He liked the way that she spoke to him like an adult.

“Hi, you two.” She grinned.

“Can we stay up for a bit with Annie?” Nina took a piece of hair that she had been sucking out of her mouth before she spoke.

“Okay, but only for an hour, then bed,” Kristin said.

“Where shall I put this?” Annie held out her apple core.

“In the lap sap.” Nina chirped.

“What’s that?” Annie looked puzzled.

“It’s Cantonese for rubbish and one of their favourite words.” Harry laughed.

“Just help yourself to anything from the fridge. Here’s Heather’s phone number if you need us for any reason.”

Kristin handed Annie a scrap of paper.

“Thanks. You have a lovely time. Don’t worry about us.

Do you know what time you’ll be back?”

“It’ll be before midnight. Lock the door, won’t you.”

Kristin grabbed her bag, “Bye, Nina, bye, Ricki.” She kissed them both on the cheek. Kristin was looking forward to a relaxing evening, aware that if she were not careful she would become a workaholic. Or perhaps she had already become one...

Their hosts for the evening, Heather and her husband Jonathan lived in Pittville, about a mile from the town centre.

As Harry drove past the park, Kristin felt a pang of sadness.

She missed the walks that she and her two friends used to take there with the children. Samantha and Celine were once a big part of her life. Their move to Spain to start a new life had left a void that only her work seemed to fill. Most of all she missed their Saturday afternoon meetings or Tea at Sam’s, as Kristin had named them. She sighed deeply.

“You okay?” Harry glanced over, as he turned into Heather’s road with its neat semi-detached houses.

“Yes, just missing Celine and Sam – going past the park reminded me of them.”

“Why don’t you go and visit them in Ronda for a day or two? Flying’s getting cheaper and I can look after the kids.

It’ll be half-term soon.”

“I thought you said that this was another economy month? Oh, here we are – number forty-six.”

Heather introduced Kristin and Harry to Piers and Sonja Jacobson, their other guests for the evening. Piers had wayward red hair and the demeanour of a mad professor.

Sonja, who had a gentle countenance, wore a maxi dress in turquoise paisley and smiled shyly.

“Wine all right? Or we’ve got beer,” Jonathan boomed.

“White wine, please.” Kristin felt as if she needed a drink after such a busy week.

“Coming up. What about you, Harry?”

“I’ll have a beer please – just a small one.”

The conversation was easy and Kristin felt herself relaxing. She really must have a little dinner party soon.

She mentally made a shopping list as she sipped her wine, then decided that it would have to wait until next month, as the house needed a good clean before she could contemplate entertaining.

KEY CHARITY Positively Pink & Blue Positively Pink & Blue are the Mijas based charities offering FREE breast and prostate/testicular cancer screening to UK expatriates living on the Costa del Sol. During 2013 over 560 women accessed our FREE breast screening programme with thankfully only a small number of ladies receiving a positive diagnosis. Some of these ladies have already had their treatment and we are pleased to report they are doing well but Positively Pink continues to support those ladies who are still receiving treatment. 2013 saw the introduction of the Positively Blue programme to provide education, awareness and support for prostate and testicular cancer. In its first year Positively Blue had an overwhelming response to the 100 free appointments that were on offer, in fact the charity funded a total of 136 appointments for prostate cancer screening and educated them all on testicular cancer and the need to self examine. During the course of 2014 we have set ourselves the challenge of offering 1000 free breast screenings and 200 free Prostate

blood tests/testicular cancer screening. The 2014 campaign began back in February and to date we have had a tremendous response but continue to offer appointments for later in the year (call 952 835 776 now to secure your place).

For us to continue to be able to offer these FREE services we need your support, as we need to raise the necessary funds to pay for the mammograms, ultrasounds and PSA blood tests. As a charity we are very proud of the fact that ALL the money we raise is used solely for the purpose of funding the professionals to carry out the radiography and blood analysis, all of the charities costs are absorbed by the two companies behind the charity. .... KEY ASTROLOGY No-One is Quite Like You… Whatever is said about astrology, there’s no doubt many more people are becoming interested in this fascinating subject, and numbers are growing. I know a few hardliners who say they don’t believe in astrology but nevertheless they still read their sun signs in the daily rags or magazines! So why is this? I believe the attraction is because deep down we all want to know what life has in store for us, maybe there’s something we’ve longed for and would like to have and one of those dailies might just hint at the possibility! Whether or not it comes true, there’s no denying that if the reading for that day, week or month is encouraging and optimistic it uplifts the spirit, even if temporarily and that’s no bad thing.

However there are 10 planets in our Solar System each positioned at specific points in the sky at the time of birth and a short study of a personal birth chart will reveal much about the character and personality of an individual. The alignment of the Sun, Moon, and Planets at the moment of our birth is unique and our personal horoscope or birth chart (they are the same) is our astrological fingerprint because no one else in the world has the same one!

Dear Joy I’ve been full of regret recently about things I think I should have done. I can’t stop thinking that if only I’d made some different decisions, things would have been different. It leaves me feeling very negative and despondent. Everything is suffering, I’m finding it difficult to focus on my work and my girlfriend keeps asking me what the matter is. I can’t really put my finger on it; I just feel I’m missing something and could have done a lot more with my life.

Thanks Mark Hi Mark A lot of people suffer with the ‘if only’ Syndrome.

‘If only’ this would happen, ‘if only’ I’d done x. ‘if only’ I had y then I’d feel z. This thought process happens to the best of us, and it can leave us feeling frustrated and often times we can feel disappointed and resigned to the feeling of lack.

It’s difficult to feel happy with a background feeling of lack and regret. Whether it’s lack of money, lack of love, lack of wellbeing, living in the past or just the feeling of something missing, an unfulfilled need. So how do we overcome this, what can we do that will make the difference to move from this thinking and feeling to having a ‘Great’ life, and being empowered again?

You have to accept where you are now and let go of what you should, might, or ought to have done. There’s nothing you can do to change the past, but you can change your future.

Many of us are now aware of the statement ‘Change your thoughts, change your life’ and it sounds easy but in practice, if you’re consumed with that little voice in the back of your head saying ‘yeh right, don’t believe that nonsense’ or ‘it’s all very well but my thoughts are my thoughts, I can’t change what I think’, then your life stays on autopilot and your dreams remain dreams.

What if you could really change those thoughts, what if you could realise your dreams, what if you could go from those feelings of ‘if only’ to feeling ‘Great’?

To start with, you need to know exactly what you are thinking - makes sense, doesn’t it?! So on a piece of paper divide it in two columns, one column for Positive Thoughts in the other Negative. Empty your thoughts onto these two columns with headings like What do I think about myself?

What do I think about my Life?

What do I think I should have done etc You clear a space in your head to input new positive data – some new affirmations for example. The aim is to start again with a clean slate. Write down your goals. Know what you really want! You imagine what it feels like to have already achieved them. Get excited, assume the ‘feeling’ of your success, you create the success vibration, and that’s the secret. Your ‘state of being’ makes all the difference.

To get into that state more easily, you can play a game with yourself. Imagine a circle in front of you on the floor; step into that circle and get the feeling of your success. Step out, and then step back in again, increase the feeling; repeat until you’re jumping up and down with excitement!

Doing this little exercise will really get into the ‘state of being’ where you’re creating the right vibrations! Sounds crazy I know, but you won’t forget it in a hurry; it will make you laugh but that’s what you want right?! It’ll take you back to being a child again with not a thought of lack, just happiness. Then whenever you think about it, you’ll laugh and enjoy and be in the right ‘state ‘for miracles to happen. Things will begin to flow, new possibilities begin to happen, and new opportunities present themselves. Your life takes off and then you really can jump in and enjoy it! Have fun!

KEY SPORTS World Cup Extravaganza Part 2 Japan 2002 The early morning kick-offs, horrible! I missed the first half of England’s quarter final with Brazil, England were ahead through Michael Owen but went on to lose. I had predicted a 1-0 England win over Argentina with Teddy Sherringham scoring. I wasn’t far off, England won 1-0 with a David Beckham penalty and Sherringham came on in the second half and hit the bar.

Germany 2006 Not the most memorable of World Cups really. David Beckham curled in a free-kick against Ecuador in round 2 and Joe Cole scored a cracker against Sweden in the groups, chesting down and half volleying in from 35 yards.

South Africa 2010 Oh dear! Did we really wait 4 years for this? If the draw (and Rob Green’s howler) with the USA wasn’t bad enough, 0-0 with Algeria was disgusting (surely Crouch and Cole had to come in for that one. Didn’t they?) Gareth Barry was off the pace with Mesut Ozil, John Terry gave the ageing Klose acres of space, Lampard had a goal disallowed which was 4 yards over the line and German keeper Manual Neuer carried on and didn’t bat an eyelid. England were out 4-1 in the last 16.

How will they fare this time? Stronger squad, more pace…….we shall see. The draw with Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica isn’t a bad one.

Woe betide if you play for an Italian side and score against them in the World Cup or even worse knock them out of it like that South Korean chappie did in 2002. They sack the player from the club and bear grudges.

I couldn’t believe while watching some footage of Scotland’s 1978 World Cup campaign, fans were holding a big banner with ‘Scotland 1978 World Cup Champions – Easy, Easy’ written on it!

Morocco were that hard pushed for players in 1970 that they could not get a full 22 squad together so just took 19 instead.

The five that never made the final cut for the 1966 World Cup squad were Johnny Byrne, Bobby Tambling, Keith Newton, Gordon Milne (later the Leicester City manager) and Peter Thompson.

The Weren’t World Cups of Wales Wales should have qualified for the World Cup finals in 1982 but didn’t, they missed out on goal difference. A home match full of floodlight trouble which ended 2-2 with Iceland didn’t help. They still could have nicked through in the final match had Russia beaten Czechoslovakia which they were favoured to do but it finished 1-1 and the Czechs went through.

They had another golden chance to qualify for the 1994 finals when a win in their final match with Rumania would have taken them through. Unfortunately Paul Bodin hit the crossbar with a penalty and Wales ended up losing 2-1.

Sticker Album Inaccuracies The Mexico ’86 sticker album had Ubaldo Fillol as Argentina’s number 1 keeper when in fact he wasn’t even part of the squad and didn’t travel to Mexico!

The same can be said for Algeria’s 82 World Cup keeper, Mehdi Cerbah, who according to Panini Mexico 86, was the number 2 keeper. Again he wasn’t part of the squad.

Artistas Eclécticos Extended Blossoming Elaine Carlton has extended the dates for her exhibition at La Luna. The Andalucian heat and the sun influence the colours, textures and the content.

Her Piscean nature means that a great deal of her work involves the sea, beaches and the associated flora and fauna.

KEY FEATURE Passport Fees for British Nationals Overseas Reduced by 35%

The fees for a UK passport for British citizens applying from overseas countries, including Spain, fell by 35% from 7th April.

James Brokenshire, Immigration and Security Minister, has announced that from 7th April the passport fee for customers applying for a UK passport from overseas will be reduced by £45 for adults and £28.50 for children.

The new fees are: •Adult 32 page passport £83.00 •Child 32 page passport £53.00 •Jumbo 48 page passport £91.00 (Adult/Child/Veteran) The 35% decrease in passport fees is the result of efficiency savings made over the last three years by bringing back the processing and issuing of overseas passports to the UK, including from the former passport processing centre at the British Embassy Madrid.

Will Middleton, Consular Director for Spain, said: “This is good news for British citizens applying for a UK Passport from Spain. The repatriation of overseas passport centres means overseas applications can now be handled more efficiently and at significantly lower cost.

“The new fees will benefit some four million Britons living overseas, including many of the estimated 800,000 who live in Spain for all or part of the year.”

If you need a new or replacement passport, go to the Overseas British passport applications page on www.GOV.UK where you can make an overseas application. You need to apply and pay online and send your supporting documents direct to the UK (no longer to the nearest Consulate or Embassy). The turnaround time is four to six weeks, and applications are accepted up to nine months before the expiry of your current passport.

The new fees for overseas applications remain marginally higher than the equivalent fees for UK-based applicants because on average overseas applications take longer – and therefore cost slightly more - to process. This is because it is often less straightforward to establish whether or not an overseas applicant is entitled to a UK passport. Overseas customers will also continue to pay a courier charge in addition to the passport fee.

By British Embassy, Madrid Friends or Family Coming to Stay with You in Spain this Easter - Tell them to look after their Passports, warns British Embassy The British Embassy in Madrid is warning Easter visitors to Spain to take good care of their passports, after more than 6000 were lost or stolen in the country last year.

A lost or stolen passport means spending precious holiday time and money to get an Emergency Travel Document or ETD in order to return home.

The Embassy urges travellers to watch a new Foreign Office video “Enjoy your holiday” on YouTube, in which British tourists who have suffered a lost or stolen passport reveal the true costs in terms of time, money and frustration in dealing with the issue.

Replacing a passport whilst abroad requires a visit to the nearest British Consulate – which may be several hours away – to obtain an Emergency Travel Document that costs the euro equivalent of 95 pounds.

“Your passport is valuable”, says Will Middleton, Consular Regional Director for Spain. “If you do need to carry it, keep it in a money belt under your clothes rather than in a handbag or rucksack, and never leave passports in a car.

“Avoid carrying all your passports together. A single bag theft can leave a family of four facing a bill of nearly 400 pounds for emergency travel documents.”

Taking just four months from last year, Consulates in Spain assisted 568 British nationals from London and the South East whose passports were lost or stolen. Figures in other regions include the South West 149, West Midlands 96, East Midlands 101, North West 209, North East 98, Yorkshire & the Humber 88, Scotland 139, Wales 72 and Northern Ireland 27.

Bag theft is the biggest cause of stolen passports in Spain (39%), followed by thefts from cars (20%), pick-pocketing (15%) and apartment or villa break-ins (14%).

KEY ENTERTAINMENT What’s on at the Salon Varietes Even after a very successful production of Andrew Lloyd ‘Webber’s ‘Whistle Down The Wind’, with some nights completely sold out, the season at the Salon Varietes Theatre in Fuengirola still has some super nights ahead. The first highlight is the stage adaptation of three episodes of Fawlty Towers. The Germans, Basil the Rat and Gourmet Night. Peter Brooks will be directing the same principals as the last time the theatre did three other adaptations with David Vincent playing Basil, Christine Morton as Sybil, Sandra Lilywhite as Polly and Enrique Pedraza as Manuel. The rest of the cast includes many who normally play leads but are having such fun with this marvellous script. The play will open on Friday April 25th and run to Wednesday 30th. Evening performances are at 8.00pm except on Sunday when it is at 7.00pm. on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th May. We are absolutely intrigued to see what will happen and expect a very busy theatre. Then on May 9th and until May 13th Alexandra Avery has devised and will present, with some very talented performers, a sparkling song and dance revue. This is all new after her extremely popular and lively show last year.

On May 17th and 18th we welcome a Welsh Male Voice Choir. Next comes our production from Danish director Henrik Hagensen of the classic play ‘On Golden Pond’. This runs for three nights from Friday May 23rd to Sunday May 25th. We round off the season with a one night show from Ricky Lavazza who is not only regarded as one of the very best cabaret performers on the Coast but played the lead in ‘Whistle Down The Wind’ and made an outstanding success of it. We knew he was good, just not that he was that good! That is on May 31st. Finally the season closes with the Silverbeats back again with their sell-out tribute to the Beatles. 8.00 p.m. on June 7th.

KEY MOTOR The Story So Far

Race 1 – Australia Mercedes driver, Nico Rosberg, finished the FIA Formula One 2014 Australian Grand Prix season opening race on top after taking the checkered flag as the winner. The German driver has achieved the 100th Mercedes-powered first place finish with his impressive race result. The tables turned for Rosberg and his team mate, Lewis Hamilton, shortly after the race got underway. Rosberg qualified in third place but soon had an unexpected opportunity to leapfrog Hamilton, as the Englishman entered the pits on lap two and retired from the race due to a miss-fire with one of the cylinders on his car.

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo managed to keep hold of his second place from qualifying all the way to the finish line at the end of his first race for the team and on home turf. The Australian’s team mate, Sebastian Vettel, was not as fortunate in the race though and he joined Hamilton in retirement on lap five due to a KERS problem on his car.

McLaren’s new addition to the team, Kevin Magnussen, started off his first season in Formula One in style securing his maiden podium finish with third place. Magnussen’s team mate, Jenson Button, just missed out on a podium spot to the Danish driver and followed closely behind to take fourth place.

Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso seemed to keep out of the limelight during the race but finished where he started, in fifth place. The Spaniard’s team mate, Kimi Raikkonen, had some competitive scraps for position with other drivers in the field throughout the proceedings. The Finnish driver failed to catch Alonso to pose a threat on his position and ended the race a couple of places behind in eighth place.

Williams’ driver, Valtteri Bottas, had a close encounter with the wall on lap 10, causing one of the rear tyres to fall off and he had to swiftly visit the pits for unexpected repairs.

The Finnish driver was able to get back on track and completed the race in sixth place. Bottas’ incident did prompt a safety car appearance from lap 12 until lap 15.

Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg appeared to have a problemfree race and he maintained his position from qualifying. The German driver picked up his first points of the 2014 season with his seventh place finish.

team mate, Daniil Kvyat for the second day in a row over the race weekend when it mattered most. Vergne got in front to secure ninth place for himself and Kvyat completed the race in the 10th and final point scoring position.

The drivers have now put the new cars through their paces in the season’s opening race. Unfortunately, the experience did not last long for some of the drivers and with the likes of Hamilton and Vettel retiring from the race, it has proved how unpredictable the sport is.

Race 2 – Malaysia Lewis Hamilton got a great jump on the field off the line, and never looked back winning the Malaysian Grand Prix from team mate Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel.

It was the first time the team has had a 1-2 finish since the Italian GP in 1959. The Mercedes driver maintained a healthy lead around ten seconds, while presumably dialling back the power unit to ensure its reliability heading to the next event.

“I feel so grateful. And particularly after such a tragedy three weeks ago, I would like to dedicate this to those families,” Hamilton said after the win.

“The team was spot on for pit stops. What a great car, what a great job from everyone.”

Vettel spend much of the race chasing Nico Rosberg, within reach, but would end up third unable to get past the strong Mercedes cars.

“It’s like he (Rosberg) found another gear. At the end I was just trying to take the car home. All in all it was good to get another podium after Daniel’s in Australia. Those guys are bloody quick,” Vettel said on the podium.

“I got a great start, that allowed me to get into second place,” said Rosberg. “I was trying to chase Lewis, he was a bit too quick today”.

Vettel’s team mate, Daniel Ricciardo, had a great event, until the 41st lap when he was released with a loose wheel in the pit lane. He stopped, and the team backed his car down to the stall to finish changing the left front wheel.

Only three laps later, he suffered a front wing failure, sending him back to pit lane again.

The Williams’ pairing ended up 7th and 8th and after the race, the television coverage featured the team asking Massa to let Bottas by with 3 laps to go, Massa decided to fight and finish 7th, not allowing his team mate past.

Sergio Perez was the hero of the race, fighting for podium from the first lap even using brute force against his teammate, Nico Hulkenberg, who claimed 10 points for the team finishing in 5th position.

Fernando Alonso was the only Ferrari in the running after Kimi Raikkonen suffered a puncture and limped the car around for most of a lap, sending him to a 12th place finish.

Alonso finished fourth, 35 seconds behind the race winner.

The race saw a few collisions, first with Lotus and STR driver Jean-Eric Vergne, then it was Adrian Sutil and Jules Bianchi, but being on a quite a good pace and going for points, Sauber’s young Mexican driver, Esteban Gutierrez, was heavily crashed by Pastor Maldonado causing C33Ferrari to rollover and a long thrill, as Gutierrez stayed in his car for a long time. The pace car was out. Pastor got a 10-second stop and go penalty.

Nico Hulkenberg in his Force India had a great run, taking the fifth spot, beating both McLaren Mercedes entries of Jensen Button, who finished 6th, and Kevin Magnussen, 9th with a slow pit stop towards the end of the event.

Sergio Perez was the first car out of the race, before the event started as the team ran into software issues with the car. Perez admitted during an interview during the race that seeing his team mate’s performance, ending up fifth, the DNS hurts even more.

Cars not classified at the finish included Ricciardo, both Sauber’s of Adrian Sutil and Esteban Gutierrez. Pastor Maldonado and Jules Bianchi made contact on the first lap sending those drivers back to the garage early.

Race 3 – Bahrain Mercedes domination continues with Lewis Hamilton and NicoRosberg in 1st and 2nd places on the podium with a Sahara Force India, Sergio Perez, in 3rd.

From the green light till the checkered flag it was an astonishing race fulfilled with overtakes and thrilling moments.

Bahrain GP was not a race of fuel-saving taxi drivers as we saw in the first two rounds of a new F1 era; all drivers were pushing hard and were on wide-open throttle any time it was possible.

Felipe Massa performed an astonishing start gaining 4 positions in the first lap. Lewis Hamilton used his chance and despite not in the best line, took the leading position in the first corner and managed to get the highest step on the podium despite all his teammate’s attempts to retrieve his starting position on a different tyre strategy. The first part of the race was almost the same as we saw in practice and qualification - Mercedes-powered teams dominated.

Kevin Magnussen failed to end the race due to technical issues, and was out during the safety car. Hamilton pitted and got a set of medium tyres, while Rosberg got soft ones right after him as he used medium compound in second stint.

This promised a great challenge in the last 10 laps between Mercedes drivers even after Paddy Lowe’s message to both to bring the cars back home. But thanks to the Mercedes AMG Petronas chiefs, we saw a great end of the race with lots of thrilling tries by Nico to overtake Lewis, who finally took his second race win and first in Bahrain in his career.

Race restart saw a tight fight between Mercedes and Force India drivers. Button started to lose positions and in the end was forced to stop with 2 laps left to go in his 250th GP race.

Red Bull Racing drivers managed to gain 20 points for the team using a different 2 pit-stops tactic, but that left Sebastian Vettel to withstand the onslaught of 3-stoppers behind the Williams Martini drivers, Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas, who had some aggressive situations fighting for positions between them, but both finished in points in 7th and 8th respectively. Daniel Ricciardo, despite his 10 places penalty, got his 3rd place gained in qualification back, pushing hard overtaking rivals one by one using a more aggressive driving style, like passing using outer line of turns, and beating his teammate wheel to wheel on a straight.

Ferrari drivers struggled all through the race with their heavy cars and a lack of balance. But using all their talent, Fernando Alonso finished 9th and Kimi Raikkonen, despite almost being hit by Valtteri Bottas trying to overtake Ricciardo, closed the top 10.

KEY FINANCE The Journey of the Euro I thought we would look at the journey of the euro over the last three weeks and see what impact various data had had during the time frame.

Week of 10 March Just about everything went right for the euro. With the exception of the French services sector, firms throughout Euroland reported growing business.

Economic growth in the zone was confirmed at 0.3% in the fourth quarter of 2013. Retail sales rose by 1.6% in January and German industrial production was up by 5% on the year. However, what really sent the euro higher was the European Central Bank’s decision not to wheel out any measures to lift inflation from 0.8% to its 2% target.

The ECB president repeated his reassurance that inflation would go up - eventually - without the need for ECB interference. Whether or not they believed that, investors were relieved that the ECB was not about to embark on a bond-buying programme. They sent the euro a cent higher against sterling and the US dollar.

Week of 17 March Although the euro was well behind the leaders - the Japanese yen, the South African rand and the antipodean dollars - it did well enough against the US dollar and the British pound, adding almost a cent against sterling and a quarter of a US cent.

There were no punchy Euroland economic statistics to help it. Indeed, the finalised inflation figure for February was revised down to 0.7%, theoretically a negative factor for the euro. There was also

By Moneycorp a gentle attempt by the European Central Bank president to warn against taking the currency too high. But investors do not foresee any action by the ECB to weaken the euro so they were not inclined to send it lower. They might be though, if and when the EU imposes sanctions on Russia in retaliation for its annexation of Crimea.

Week of 24 March An uneventful week for the euro kept it in the middle of the majorcurrency field.

It strengthened by a quarter of a cent against sterling and was down by one US cent. The euro was down by -1% against the week’s leader, the Australian dollar, and up by 1% against the laggard, the South African rand. The best economic news out of Euroland came from the French private sector, where manufacturers and services firms reported increasing business for the first time in two years.

Inflation in the euro zone was revised down to 0.7%, the same level that provoked a rate cut by the European Central Bank last November, but investors seemed not to care; they evidently do not foresee any move by the ECB to prod the inflation rate back up to its 2% target.

Highlight is the Teppanyaki show where exotic food using the best quality ingredients is masterfully prepared on a hot steel plate right in the middle of the table. The chef will show you the unforgettable cooking display called “Teppanyaki”.

Pepper pots etc are expertly thrown in the air and you must watch the trick with the eggs. Try to catch a bit of the omelette in your mouth when cooked! This is great fun to experience something a bit different or particularly if there are a few of you. Try one of the specially selected Teppanyaki menus which are great value for money. Ginza is open from 12.00 to 24.00. Places around the Teppanyaki spectacle are limited, so it is advisable to book. INDIAN OCEAN Henry and the staff at Indian Ocean made us extremely welcome from the offset. Henry has a great sense of humour, is mild mannered and I notice how his customers greet him fondly – a good sign as he has regulars. Firstly I must comment on how reasonable the price is, particularly in relationship to the quality of the food served. Too many local Indian restaurants are not at all shy in charging an enormous amount for quite a mediocre meal. Indian Ocean is at Playa Marina and is the sister restaurant to India Lucia. Tastefully decorated. Papadoms were very fresh. I was delighted to see Prawn Puri on the menu and this and the Chicken Tikka for starters went down very well. The other half went for the Bhuna which he thoroughly enjoyed. I decided to go for one of the many specials on the menu, Galina Cafreal, a very tasty Goan curry cooked with toasted coconut, green chillies, ginger, tomato and fresh coriander which was superb.

Whilst I really enjoy the traditional Indian favourites, it is nice to see such a good selection of different dishes if you fancy a change. Indian Ocean also does it hot if you like to add a bit of spice to your life. Indian Ocean is Key recommended.

Back in the Summer of 2006, Sax Man Lee “Kix” Thompson approached Wandsworth Harry to introduce the Nutty Boys onstage before their gig at the bullring in Marbella.

Harry had had the privilege of touring the length and breadth of the UK, as well as across Europe and the USA with the band and was happy to oblige with Thommo’s request. Lee had suggested H came on stage dressed as a bullfighter to do the honours but Harry decided he wouldn’t be able to get into those tight trousers and opted instead for a pair of Union Jack swimming shorts and flip flops along with a fancy dress outfit including a plastic Sax hanging from his hip!

After the show, Harry had the idea to open a Madness themed bar in Puerto Banus only to find that the premises he had located had licensing issues so put the project on the back burner until now.

Having managed to secure the funding at the tail end of 2013, The Nutty Bar opened early April for all to enjoy in the sunshine of Marbella on the Costa Del Sol!
