KEY BEAUTY Hair Extensions – What they can do for you
By Tracy, Hair Magic
Tracy at Hair Magic has been doing hair extensions for the last 25 years and has every type on the market at VERY reasonable prices. The best way for me to tell you what they can do for you is to answer frequently asked questions.
lengthen it and it’s very cheap as we charge per extension. For thickness you need 20 to 35 extensions at a cost of between 3 to 4.50 Euros depending on the length and quality of hair you choose.
Q My hair is really fine - can I use extensions to thicken my hair? A We do more extensions to thicken hair than we do to
Q Will they damage my hair? A There are many bad things said about hair extensions. If they are put in properly with correct tension, they will absolutely not damage your hair. Q How long do they last? A We fully guarantee our hair extension for the first 8 weeks but they can last for five months. Q How do I look after them? A You treat them as if they are your own hair. You can’t leave them wrapped in a towel and you can’t go to bed with them wet or tie them up when wet, as they can tangle. You can even colour your hair with them in as they are real hair. You can use straightening irons, tongs, hair dryer, all as you would with your own hair. Q I would love long hair – how many extensions do I need and how much will it cost? A In order to have long hair you need between 70 and 120 extensions. It all depends on how thick your own hair is and if it is fine, you won’t need as many. If your own hair is thick, we have to match the extensions to your own. If not, you will see a line between your hair and the extension and this looks terrible! We also normally use 2 to 4 different colours to get an exact match to your own hair. For more information on Hair Extensions or to book your free consultation, call Hair Magic on 952 931 777/673 998 787 or see our website www.hairmagicspain.com.

KEY HEALTH Zirconium Crowns
By Chris Weir, Sonrisa
There have been many different types of crowns used in dentistry, but they all have had disadvantages. The strongest and most durable crowns have been the porcelain fused to ceramic type. The biggest disadvantage of these crowns is the aesthetic appearance, they don’t transmit light like natural teeth so they are not as natural looking, and after a few years they show a black margin which is unsightly. The all porcelain crowns have weaknesses and are prone to fracture under stress.
ideal for replacing tooth substance. It has high hardness and tensile strength and is a good insulator which reduces the chance of sensitivity.
But now we have a new crown material called Zirconium. It is very strong and can be used anywhere in the dentition.
The crown is made up from a thin shell of zirconium (a coping) with a softer porcelain layer fused on top to give a very strong natural looking restoration. Zirconium can also be used for multi-unit bridges to replace missing teeth and for veneers.
Advantages of Zirconium: 1. Very strong material 2. Has very good aesthetics 3. The cement line is thin and doesn’t show a black line 4. Less tooth has to be removed for the crown preparation 5. It is biocompatible and non allergenic 6. It is translucent like natural teeth The material, Zirconium, is often referred to as ceramic steel because it is so strong. The colour is white/ ivory which is
12
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
We have had over 20 years experience of the material because it has been used in the medical profession for hip replacements with no adverse reactions, and is bio-compatible. It is made from zirconium oxide, which is a ceramic material which was used extensively in the aero-space industry.
The bottom line is they are they more expensive. Yes, they cost a little more than porcelain/metal ceramic crowns, but they will last longer and you won’t get the horrible black margin showing after a few years. One of the most common reasons for replacing porcelain/metal ceramic crowns is not failure of the crown, but the unsightly appearance of the black margins that show after a few years as the gum margin recedes.

KEY HEALTH Bio-Chromium Bio-Chromium from Pharma Nord contributes to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels. Its ChromoPrecise organic chromium yeast is up to ten times better absorbed than chromium chloride and chromium picolinate forms, which are used in most other supplements. Make this your only choice for blood sugar control. Chromium is a trace mineral essential for growth and normal metabolism and is a key factor in the processing of sugars and fats within the body. Chromium is an important component of the Glucose Tolerance Factor, which together with insulin regulates carbohydrate metabolism and glucose balance. Chromium plays an important role in the natural weight regulating mechanism of the body. Bio Chromium supplement contains chromium in a highly absorbable organic form, most readily utilised within the body. The only full EU approved Chromium supplement. Unequalled in quality, safety and documentation. Why Pharma Nord Bio-Chromium: - Manufactured to pharmaceutical standards. - The ONLY approved Chromium Supplement in the EU. - Approved by the European Food Safety Authority for blood sugar control. - Approved by EFSA as up to ten times more bio-available than all other chromium supplements. - Reduce cravings for snacks between meals. - Help maintain optimal blood glucose levels. What does Chromium do? Chromium is essential for the metabolism of carbohydrates, fat and protein, helping to maintain healthy blood glucose levels. Chromium is a component of the so-called Glucose Tolerance Factor, which together with the hormone insulin, regulates carbohydrate metabolism and glucose balance within the body. Inorganic chromium is not incorporated into the GTF, and not all forms of organic chromium are GTF active. Chromium makes the action of insulin more effective, and helps the body to remove fat from the bloodstream. What is the best form of Chromium to take? Chromium supplements are available in both organic and inorganic forms; although inorganic forms of chromium are cheaper, the body absorbs organic forms of chromium much more efficiently. Chromium supplements are available in several chemical forms (e.g. chromium picolinate or chromium polynicotinate). Each Bio Chromium tablet contains 100 microgram of chromium in the form of organic ChromoPrecise yeast. Dietary chromium is obtained from wholemeal cereal and grain products (provided soils are not chromium depleted), nuts, seafood and yeast. Highly refined foods (e.g. refined
By Anni’s Vital Shop sugar, refined flour used in white bread) contain little of this essential mineral, which is also easily lost during cooking or food processing. How much should you take? Pharma Nord recommends 1-2 tablets per day or as directed by a physician. Tablets are best taken with food, particularly that with a high fibre content. Suitable for vegetarians. Recommended Daily Allowance Chromium is 50 to 200 microgm/day. Are there adverse effects from taking Bio-Chromium? Chromium supplements should be taken with caution by people with impaired renal function or diabetes (insulin dosage may need to be adjusted). Bio-Chromium should not be taken by those with an allergy to yeast. Pregnant or lactating women and those on medication should consult a doctor before using any product.

KEY HEALTH What is Massage Therapy? Massage is one of the oldest forms of healing. Chinese records dating back 3000 years document its use. The ancient Hindus, Japanese, Persians and Egyptians applied various forms of massage for different ailments. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, born in 460 BC wrote papers recommending the use of rubbing and friction for joint and circulatory problems. Massage therapy is the manual manipulation of soft body tissues (muscle, connective tissue, tendons and ligaments) to enhance a person’s health and well-being. There are many theories about how massage may affect the body. The ‘gate control theory’ suggests that massage may provide stimulation that helps to block the pain signals sent to the brain. Other theories suggest that massage might stimulate and release certain chemicals in the body such as serotonin or endorphins. But what we do know, from various client testimonials, is that massage helps to relieve tension and pain, increases flexibility and mobility, and helps to clear lactic acid and other waste products, which in turn reduces

KEY HEALTH Our Precious Skin
By Anne Stark
Your skin is your largest organ. It protects the internal systems of your body and helps to regulate your body temperature through sweating. It controls heat loss through its blood vessels; if you are hot, the blood vessels enlarge, thereby losing more heat; if you are cold, they contract to conserve body heat. Your skin acts as a sensation point to your environment, allowing you to feel pain and a warning if you are about to be harmed. It also plays an important role in your appearance. Skin is on permanent display and with a trained eye, a doctor can sometimes analyse internal illnesses from its appearance. Genetic factors play a big part in the way your skin looks. External factors such as diet, alcohol, smoking, weather conditions and of course sun and tanning machines will all leave their mark. They all cause skin ageing in one way or another. So how can we reduce skin ageing? There are many treatments available; however it’s never too early or too late to start thinking about skin protection, skin removal and maintenance treatments. Your cleansing routine at home with regular visits to your facialist will ensure your skin will look its best. With the right treatments, together with home care, you will minimise skin ageing; the right diet and regular vitamin intake will make a big difference too. Facial fillers are very popular – some people can’t live without their Botox! I feel quite sorry for an odd wrinkle; we all have them but nobody wants them and people do whatever they can to get rid of them but sometimes the end result is not so pretty either, the so-called “Botox look” where you have had either too much or too little and in the wrong places but I suppose it does not really matter unless you sit in front of the mirror and look at yourself all day! There are of course plenty of clinics that do an excellent job and are able to take years off a woman’s face, but remember the old saying “you only get what you pay for” thus it is so important to source a good doctor. My clients who use my Genie Non-Surgical Treatment, 10-Minute Miracle find it is inexpensive and together with some “Get Results” creams, it does the trick! Women who have regular Genie treatments do not need any fillers. I have living proof of this – clients who are not 25 years old, they are in their 50’s and still look amazing – much younger, more confident with natural skin glowing and they are beaming with well being. MYscara is a new revolution in semi-permanent mascara. We all like to wake up made up. It takes only about 30 minutes to apply and will last 2-3 weeks. It has to be said that if your lashes are very fine, it’s advisable to colour them beforehand but this is not necessary as you can have an effect from natural to a more made-up look and it’s possible to apply a few extensions too. You are free to swim and shower the next day. This is an excellent treatment for women of any age and costs only 35 Euros with an introductory FREE eyelash tint included in the price. For this and any other of my other treatments please call me direct on 629 292 899. Anne

KEY HOLISTIC The Healing Qualities of Tibetan Singing Bowls I met Christine Heckel a few months ago and then had a “taster” of the Tibetan Singing Bowls at a Mystical Evening at The Chill Zone in Coin. From that moment I wanted to find out more and I recently had my chance to experience the impact of the Tibetan Singing Bowls therapy at first hand. Christine has always been a highly motivated and successful business woman. Ten years ago, however, she was diagnosed with a serious illness which could have proved fatal. This resulted in an extensive stay in hospital being pumped through with all sorts of chemicals that left her seriously debilitated. Christine decided it was time for a complete overhaul of her lifestyle and apart from changes such as diet, exercise, yoga etc, having been interested in the Tibetan Singing Bowls for a long time, she decided to train at the Peter Hess Institute (Germany). Christine is an official representative of the Peter Hess Institute (Germany). She is the only sound massage practitioner in Spain authorised to teach under the auspices of the Peter Hess Academy Spain. I am going to start by reproducing here an introduction to the Tibetan Singing Bowls taken from Christine’s website www.christine-heckel.com where you will find all sorts of interesting information. “We are all affected by sound, whether soothing sounds of singing bowls, birds singing or the less relaxing sound of cars or loud music. All sounds have a profound effect on your emotions and well-being. Sound Massage therapy has its origins in India, for over 5,000 years sound has been used for healing purposes. Our complex physiology can be afflicted by physical dysfunctions and pains, as can our mental and emotional being. Sound therapy is a proven method of relieving the physical, mental and spiritual problems, by producing healing vibrations, which reposition the body’s cell into a state of harmony. Soothing sounds promote deep relaxation, improved energy, stress relief and clarity of thought, which in turn can enhance your everyday life”. Peter Hess describes the effect of sounds on the body: “If one drops a stone in a pond, concentric waves spread out over the whole pond. Every molecule within the water is put into movement in this manner. Similar happens during the sound massage in our body, as our body is 80 percent water”.
Sound massage can help with cervical and shoulder tension, headaches, digestion and abdominal tension as well as aid better, deeper respiration and improve concentration and well as producing inner calm, resulting in a reduction in pain and an increase in creativity and ultimately productivity too. A doctor, specialist or therapist, is usually an expert in their own particular field. I have often thought that perhaps it makes more sense to address the whole body rather than just one specific area. Tibetan Singing Bowls give a “sound massage” to the whole body and it is pain-free. Christine uses the bowls to attune all areas from head to foot, back and front, concentrating on feet, hands, lower and upper back and the abdominal area. I felt the vibration in my entire body but especially a “lot of action” near my eye where I had recently burst a blood vessel, in the abdomen (I have Crohn’s) and of course in the painful areas of my back. Tight muscles feel a lot softer after the therapy and I have lots more energy and inspiration after this session. Thank you so much, Christine, for introducing me to the Tibetan Singing Bowls. I can’t wait to repeat the experience! Please contact Christine for more information, to book a one-to-one session or attend one of the many workshops she organises on the Costa del Sol. KEY HOLISTIC Welcome to the first of my “Good News Articles” on how to balance your hormones with Progesterone Therapy and feel great about yourself and your life! Women today deserve the right to be informed how their bodies work and how hormone imbalance can affect them on a daily basis. Women have busy lives with a home to keep, a family and sometimes an elderly family member to take care of; many also hold down a job or two! No wonder at times we feel drained, stressed and worn out. My aim is to inform you wonderful ladies out there - how to keep your life on track and how to understand life changes that occur as we get older. The Dance of the Hormones - hormones are choreographed and orchestrated, they can change in a single moment through an upset, stress or even the weather. This leaves women uncomfortably unaware as to what is going on. The two female hormones are Progesterone & Estrogen. When going through puberty these hormones work together to form our body features, shape, breasts and fertility production. Together with other major hormones – called receptors, they function in conjunction with each other to keep us balanced throughout our life. Hormone Imbalance - is very misunderstood and not explained to us at all by our doctors. At the age of 35-40 our hormone levels start to change; Progesterone, which is produced in the ovaries, starts to diminish and sometimes Estrogen too, but under normal circumstances the Progesterone hormone, which is required to embrace the fertilized eggs in the womb, is at a lower level at this age, so women become infertile and sometimes have miscarriages. With the help of Progesterone Cream, they could become pregnant within a reasonable amount of time. For women who are in the 40-55 age group, they slowly become Estrogen Dominant - how? Because Progesterone is at its lowest level, Estrogen then becomes the dominant hormone. This is called the pre-menopause stage. This is when the fun and games start, ladies. What are the symptoms and do I know?- Breast tenderness, mood swings, depression, loss of libido, weight gain, dry skin, tummy fat and loss of muscle, anxiety, irritability, insomnia, poor sleep patterns, sweating, cravings, bloating, night sweats and hot flushes. Not every woman suffers with all these intolerable symptoms; some suffer with just a few of them. Around the age of 50-55 we will enter into menopause, when we stop having periods. Progesterone Therapy

By Aly Farmer can be started at pre-menopause or during menopause, and some women use it after menopause too. Diet & Exercise – This doesn’t mean you have to start a strict diet as such, but change some of your eating habits; eat more fish, fruit and vegetables, cut down on fatty foods, fried food, carbohydrates and sugars, take a bike ride or go for a walk every day and enjoy the fresh air, put this time aside and don´t fall back on finding something in the home to do. This is your time, you deserve it. Mind & Body - What we think in our head - will happen to us? We must always remember this - our thoughts are very powerful tools and more powerful than we think. When you wake up in the morning, sit for a moment alone and meditate on your day, what you will do today, who you meet and who you will chat with. Think about all the good things in your life that are special to you, picture them and be grateful. If you are religious, pray and say thank you for the things and people around you. Do the same when you go to bed. You will sleep rested and much more comfortable. Take time to find some self help and personal coaching books or videos that are uplifting and comforting to you; positivity is a must at this time. Keep your mind focused on good things and happy times; this will amount into your hormone balance journey flowing with ease. Natural Products to help - ProgesterAll™ – is a non-steroid, bio-identical progesterone gel cream, which means your body recognizes it and can process it through the liver. Natural Progesterone Cream ProgesterAll is the miracle cream women have dreamed of and needed for so long. Small applications twice a day can slowly balance hormones; this requires a combination of a relaxed lifestyle and positive thinking. The hormone balance journey requires patience and a lot of changes but there is a positive outcome – happier, brighter, relaxed and more confident women enjoying their lives. In the next issue I will feature: Stress & Migraine, Osteoporosis & Hormone Balance Foods. KEY FEATURE Why you need a Facebook Page for your Small Business
Social media is like marmite, you either love it or hate it ... but, it’s here to stay and impacts buying decisions like you wouldn’t believe! One of the best ways to use social media for business is with a Facebook Page. Here are 5 reasons to create one for your small business today. 1. You can talk to your target audience Having a Facebook page for your business gives you a way to talk to and get direct feedback from your target audience. Think of it like an ongoing focus group. Your fans are there because they are aware of you company, and want to learn more. 2. It shows the personality behind your business Whilst you may feel intrepid about having a “virtual” presence online, Facebook actually makes you more human. You can express yourself and your company’s philosophy with photos and text like never before. Social connections and genuine communication are an integral part of social media. 3. You can build your own community Facebook pages are excellent places to gather together your

customers, prospects and fans to provide reviews, share opinions, voice concerns and offer feedback. This becomes your tribe. You are bringing people together and this can then lead to a loyal following. 4. Your website traffic will rocket If the number of visitors to your website is important to you, Facebook is crucial. By telling your “tribe” on Facebook what fabulous extra information you have available on your website, chances are they will go take a look. Plus if you have a link to your Facebook Page on your website your site visitors will admire you for being web savvy. 5. Your competitor already has one! Chances are that someone else in your niche market is already on Facebook and banging those jungle drums and your tribe are joining the beat! How are you going to get them back? If you would like to learn more about Facebook for Business, my next workshop, sponsored by Key to Mijas Costa Magazine, is on 18th September at Cala Mijas Hotel (see below for more information).

KEY ASTROLOGY Jupiter in Leo July 2014 to August 2015 With summer well underway and the heat taking its toll I thought what better way to see us through the coming months than a look at the light side of Jupiter, the largest and most benevolent star in our Solar System. It takes Jupiter 12 years to travel through every sign of the zodiac and on the 16th July 2014 it entered the Fire sign of Leo. In astrological terms Jupiter represents expansion, optimism, growth and abundance though it can also be prone to excess and exaggeration! Because we identify strongly with our own opinions, beliefs and perceptions, when others disagree it’s often taken personally. Still, Jupiter in a Fire sign teaches us to embrace our more confident, brave, and outgoing selves which is how we grow and expand. With Jupiter in Leo we attract the most fortunate experiences when expressing fairness, generosity and sincerity… remembering always to avoid the pitfall of excessive egotism! Jupiter likes to learn and in the Sun ruled sign of Leo he helps us to focus more on developing our hobbies and creative interests, and new avenues for exploring our talents could open up. Romance could also be on the cards! We may begin to see opportunities for enjoying our lives more fully, or people come into our lives who introduce us to these opportunities.

An aspect from Jupiter to Uranus in September 2014 and February to June 2015 will open up new energies and attitudes so be prepared to entertain the unusual and start thinking outside of the box! The interpretations on the next page will give you an idea of what Jupiter in Leo has to offer each sun sign over the next year although not everyone will experience these effects at the same time; it depends on whether your birthday is at the beginning or end of your sun sign. For instance those with birthdays at the beginning of their sign may already be feeling the effects whereas late sun sign birthdays may not feel them until the Spring/Summer of 2015. KEY FEATURE Detox Your Money Blocks Why is it that some people are successful no matter what, whilst others struggle despite how hard they work? You might have heard this many times before but the real truth is, it is all in the mind. What goes on in the mind has an effect on everything that happens to us. Our thoughts really do become things, what we focus on we get more of. Here lies the challenge when it comes to anything that is troubling us and in this case money, or the lack of it, and we can get in a pickle. For many people fear and limiting beliefs can tend to be a driving force that promotes negative thoughts and if we’re not careful, can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. For instance, we are fed so much negative information through the media; the recession was a very good example of this. Our mind set goes along with the idea of a recession, everyone talks about it, our focus and fear-based thoughts start worrying about the loss our business, our money, our credibility, our homes etc. We get into the mindset of ‘what if it all goes wrong’ ‘what if I lost my job, what if I can’t pay the mortgage or rent etc’ It’s
28
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
By Joy Fahey so easy to get caught up in the mass hysteria of loss and be influenced to think the worst. It can take over our mind, it can have us in its grip and before we know it we’re in trouble. It can take control, we can lose our power, our confidence and it can become an overwhelming problem. The good news is it doesn’t have to be that way. We can regain our power and regain our confidence; get back on track with some new thinking, actions and disciplines. We can change our mindset. Successful people don’t ‘buy’ into the negatives; they have a different way of thinking about it. They don’t get stuck in the story, the hysteria, and the worry, instead they observe what’s going on and keep focused on the positives. They look for the opportunities, for solutions and options and do not allow the negatives to steer them off course. Their mindset is ‘What if it all went right’! The Universe is absolutely unquestionably abundant, and when we are in tune with that, problems dissolve into thin air. So how do we adjust our dial and get connected, change our focus, change our thoughts and change our mind? Here are a few good affirmations to get you started - Money loves me and wants to take care of me! (Think of money as a person, how are you treating that person? Love and adore them, have a great relationship with them!) - I deserve money - Money gives me freedom to help myself and others - I get wealthier everyday in every way - Money comes to me easily - I am open to receiving money etc You can think up some for yourself and read them first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Detoxing your mind of your money blocks will really help you to move into a success mentality. For more information and help go to www.joyfahey.com

KEY SPORTS Highlights of the 2014 Brazilian World Cup
By Steve Billingham
Holland thumped Spain 5-1 and Robin Van Persie’s fantastic header, lobbed over the keeper was a tremendous piece of opportunist striking and was the goal of the tournament. Casillas had two poor matches in the Spain goal and they were eliminated.
Cup game. The skipper, central defender Mario Yepes, was 38.
‘Oi, watch the leopard skins!’ screamed a Dutch defender as the ref sprayed the line for the wall to stand behind for the free-kick, a new idea. ‘The spray lines for the free-kicks are a good idea and I think they ought to be introduced into the Premier league next season,’ remarked the bloke down the local Chinese takeaway.
In Round 2, Columbia’s James Rodriguez showed a tremendous piece of skill, chesting down and left peg volleying from 20 yards with great technique against a Suarez-less Uruguay before scoring a second in a 2-0 win. Many of the round 2 and quarter matches were tight and went to extra time or penalties.
Tim Cahill volleyed into the roof of the net, a fine goal but Australia went down 2-3 to Holland in Port Alegre. Honduras were tough and physical but France and Benzema were too skilful and clever and beat them 3-0. Mexico keeper Guillermo Ochoa showed what a fine goalkeeper he was making two outstanding saves from Neymar, one a point blank header. Marcelo pathetically tried to get a penalty by falling over in the closing stages. Did Pele, Zico and the boys drop to the floor as pathetically as that looking for penalties? Hulk, Fred and Jo were all poor up front for Brazil although Neymar scored 4 goals before he was pole-axed by a Columbian defender in the quarter finals. Samaras scored a 91 minute penalty against the Ivory Coast to put Greece through to the last 16 for the first time along with Algeria who looked lively in a 4-2 win over Japan, one of the matches of the tournament, and then got a point with Russia to qualify. After being robbed of qualification in 1982, the non-aggression pact of Gijon etc – remember the Algerian bloke holding the wad of notes up in disgust? Dark horses Columbia, Chile and Costa Rica had all played good stuff in the first round while the strongest of the Europeans looked to be Holland, Germany and France. When goalkeeper, Fayd Mondragon, who was in the 1994 squad and played against England in the 1998 tournament came on for the final 5 minutes against Japan aged 43 years and 3 days, he became the oldest player to play in a World

The Algerian keeper, Rais M’Bolhi, was one of the best 4 in the tournament along with Mexico’s Ochoa, USA’s Howard and Neur of Germany.
David Luiz, aside from his usual barging and shoving, scored a beautifully place free-kick from 30 yards against Columbia in the quarter finals but an astonishing semi-final saw Brazil trounced 7-1 with Germany scoring 4 goals in 6 minutes, the pick of them a low, left-footed, 20-yard drive by Tony Kroos. Holland took third place with a 2-0 win over Brazil. THE FINAL: GERMANY v ARGENTINA, Maracana, 13 July The final was a tight but entertaining match. Argentina’s Higuain had the ball in the net after half an hour following a peach of a Messi pass out to right flank but it was disallowed for offside. After Lionel Messi screwed a shot wide after 47 minutes, Germany’s Howedes headed powerfully against a post. 0-0 at the final whistle and the match went into extra-time. With 6 minutes remaining, substitute Mario Goetze chested down and volleyed home from the angle to give Germany the cup and become the first substitute to score the winning goal in a World Cup final. Stars Of The Tournament included Arjen Robben always lively down the wing, looking to create openings and pitching in with goals himself (3) along with Robin Van Persie (4). However in the semi final against Argentina, Robben was still full of jinxing runs but seemed to want a touch too many. Karem Benzema also looked a threat, had sharp matches in the groups against the Swiss and Honduras, scored 3 goals and missed many more. James Rodriguez finished with 6 goals and Miroslav Klose overtook Gerd Muller as the leading World Cup goal scorer with 16 goals.

KEY FEATURE The Salon Varietés Theatre In this issue I thought I would give those of you who were not familiar with our local English Language Theatre some interesting background about it, which I have taken from their website. “The Salon was built in 1925 and actually ran as a theatre until 1956 when it was turned into a Cinema, showing films in Spanish, and once a week films in English, which was a wonderful treat to the ex pats in those days. Spearheaded by Mike Lewin and Annie Spiers, they negotiated a long-term lease on The Salon, with the landlord Manuel Balbuena, who was delighted at the prospect of The Theatre coming to life once more. With the blood, sweat, toil, and probably a few tears from a hard-working core of dedicated people, most of whom are still very active in the Theatre today, they changed everything except the name, the place we all know and love as The Salon Varietés was born, it opened its doors for the first time on June 14th 1985. On the bill, Bernard Stanley Bilk, better known as Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band. The Salon offers a wide choice of productions, Musicals, Drama, Reviews and Farce making it a unique cultural centre for foreign residents, and visitors alike. The Salon Varietés has over the years become a hub, to this transient community, by offering a cultural and sociable place where people can come and enjoy a wide and varied choice of productions. The Salon Varietés is still the only true live Theatre on the Costa del Sol, and we are very proud of that fact. The Salon’s Board, S.A.L.V.A. works very hard to maintain the superb standard that has been achieved over the years by a dedicated band of extremely talented people. Some have been involved in the Professional Theatre, and who now give their knowledge generously and gladly to keep the doors of the Salon open. KEY FEATURE Making Scents
By Sue Cross
Piers was punctual and arrived with his pipe hanging from his mouth like an appendage. Kristin hoped that he would not smoke when he was manufacturing products, as the thought of ash dropping into lotions and potions was rather off-putting. She confidently ushered Piers into the house, her eyes shining with enthusiasm. Over coffee, Kristin ran through her ideas, glancing from time to time at her list of products. “I already mix my own oils for the salon and have started to sell them by mail order to the public,” she enthused, “I’d like to start with three cleansers and three matching toners – one for dry, one for normal and one for oily skin. I don’t want to use any artificial colour or perfume. I’ve written down which essential oils to use in each product.” Piers stroked his beard, his grey eyes darting back and forth, as if looking for an escape route. Kristin paused for his reaction, while Harry quietly sipped his coffee. “You’re breaking new ground here. People like their products to smell nice – that’s why we use perfume. Essential oils are expensive, as they’re distilled from plants and it takes tons of them just to make a small amount of oil. Much easier and cheaper to use perfume.” Piers remarked. “I know, but perfumes can cause allergies and the right essential oils smell delicious, as well as being part of the treatment. I’ve chosen oils like lavender, lemon, geranium, rose and jasmine because they smell so good.” Kristin would not back down, her chin set with determination. “Tell you what – I’ll do a trial run of each and we’ll go from there.” Piers coughed as he lit up his pipe. “Great. Can you make it at your place? There’s no room here.” Kristin looked concerned for the first time that evening. “No problem – I’ve got my own laboratory.” “It all sounds promising, but I have to tell you that funds are limited. We need to talk costs.” Kristin glanced over at Harry, in the hope that he would take over at this point. To her relief, he did and Piers said that he would work on an hourly fee. It was expensive but Kristin knew that his sort of expertise would not come cheap. A figure was agreed. “Have you got people who’d be willing to try the products out?” Piers asked. “Oh, yes. My clients would be only too willing. Everyone likes a freebie,” Kristin laughed. “Right – we’re in business. Once you’ve approved the

formulations, they have to go on what’s called a ‘challenge test’ for about six months to check for stability, viscosity and so on. This will give you time to organise your packaging. I warn you that you have to buy in huge bulk. What about storage?” Piers enquired. “Storage?” Kristin repeated, undaunted in spite of knowing that she had a lot to learn. “I know – there’s a room that I once used as a painting studio next to the salon. I don’t have time to paint any more, so the room isn’t used. We could get some shelving and hey presto.” “Good. That’s solved that problem then. Now, here’s a list of suppliers of cartons, bottles and raw ingredients for you. I’ll start formulating tomorrow.” Piers looked intensely at his watch. “I think this calls for a celebration. We’ve got a bottle of champagne that a client gave me at Christmas. We were waiting for something to celebrate. How about a glass?” Kristin jumped up, her enthusiasm as infectious as a high school cheerleader. “Good idea. I’ll get it. You two carry on talking.” Harry had hardly spoken throughout the meeting. He disappeared into the kitchen. Kristin jumped and then giggled when she heard the champagne cork pop. Soon, Harry reappeared with a tray and handed round the drinks. “Here’s to the skincare range,” Kristin raised her glass. “The skincare range.” The men echoed. Piers downed his drink quickly and announced that he ought to be getting back to his house, which was not far from Harry and Kristin’s. It was dark outside. Daylight hours were shortening as winter fast approached and some trees were already looking barren after some heavy gusts of wind. “I have some marking to do. The scourge of the teaching profession – well, one of them,” Harry chuckled. “Thank you, Piers. Can’t wait to try our first samples.” Kristin wanted to kiss him but decided that this was not professional, so she shook his hand instead. Piers muttered something incomprehensible and hurried out, leaving a lingering smell of pipe tobacco and damp tweed behind him. KEY COMPUTERS Unlimited Mobile 3G/4G Internet Access Last time I spoke about the long-awaited arrival of the fibre connection to our area as a solution to the well-known problems we all have trying to watch our beloved TV channels from the UK, Ireland and Scandinavia. The contract for terminating the works finishes in mid-September, but even if an extension should be granted from the Calahonda Community, it is unlikely to be rolled out in the immediate future for actual end-user consumption. Eager to please our clients (as always) we have obtained yet another possible way of connecting to the Internet, which we will be pleased to present to you in our offices or even, should you wish, at your home in conjunction with buying a television box from us. The principle is already quite well known from our Rent-anInternet-Access systems, which quite simply consists of a unit which receives its Internet from a mobile telephony provider and in turn acts as a Wi-Fi router for its surroundings. Up until now, the maximum traffic per month with these units has been 10 Gb for a monthly amount of around 35 Euros, which is excellent for normal browsing, checking your email and even the occasional FaceTime or YouTube session, but for television streaming purposes would only give you about 2-3 days of normal viewing as an absolute maximum per month. However, as the title of this article indicates, we can now offer unlimited traffic on mobile Internet access too! Prices are higher, admittedly, around 60 Euros per month, but the speeds are quite amazing. Depending on the area and the coverage,
By Hans J. Nielsen, Manager - WISE S.L.
we have obtained an average of 30 Mb down/10 Mb up. This will cover even the most extravagant use from all family members at the same time; furthermore you can contract it on a 30-day basis, for example from the 15th of one month to the 15th of the following, not needing to succumb to calendar months’ restrictions. As you might already have noticed, prices are very competitive compared with the fibre connection offers and we do not require any minimum period; we do not even require any initial signup fee. As always, if you are not happy with the complete package provided by us, i.e. Internet, IPTV and any other services, you can freely return the total solutions, no questions asked, as part of the WISE complete turnkey solutions concept. As we await the 5G mobile network, which as far as I have read will offer us up to 5Gbps and the finalisation of the local physical fibre network and their pricing, this system seems to us to be a very competitive offer. We urge you to visit our shop in Calahonda for a demo; the road and the parking area have now been completely reconditioned and we are now also open in the afternoons from 16.00 to 19.00. You will also find our ad on this page. Hope to see you soon Yours sincerely Hans J. Nielsen Manager WISE, S.L.

KEY PETS Tips for the Summer
By Joanna the Dog Groomer
So summer is upon us. As a qualified dog groomer for over 23 years, and for 13 on the Costa del Sol, here is my advice for your dog during the summer months. WARNING – Your dog’s pads can and will burn in seconds walking on hot sand, metal drain covers, stainless steel; prolonged walking on pavements that are in direct sunlight can also cause problems. Remember that just like humans, your dog’s paws and their health will really affect how your dog walks and in turn their joint and spine health. Some damage to pads will result in your dog walking in an abnormal way causing added pressure on their joints. PAD CARE - Cracked heals - rub in 100% Pure Coco Butter or pad wax; both are safe for your dog to lick. - Cuts - seek advice from your vet. - Matting – on long-haired breeds it is important to have the fur trimmed inside the paws. Matting can cause dogs to lick and chew, resulting in infection. Please also remember that dogs’ paws and ears lose heat, so these areas should be kept clean and matt-free to allow heat loss in summer. EAR CARE If your dog enjoys swimming, here’s some advice: - Encourage your dog to shake well after swimming. Never tell them off for that “mad 5 minutes” of running around and shaking. Instinct is a wonderful thing; it will remove all unwanted water from their ears! - Your dog groomer or vet should check the condition of your dog’s ears every few months. Chronic ear infections are a common problem here in Spain. - In long-coated breeds, the hair inside the ears should be plucked out to prevent problems.
36

FUR Remember – if your dog is shaved for the summer, it may be at risk of burning in the sun so for those sun worshipping days, use sun cream. For dogs with undercoats (German Shepherds, Huskies etc) the undercoat should be removed to allow the air to reach the skin. SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE Heavy panting, rapid breathing, saliva becomes very thick, dog may vomit (this could be instant dehydration) unsteady on feet like being drunk, bloody diarrhoea, skin does not spring back when pulled, high rectal temperature or signs of shock, lips and mucous membranes turn grey followed by collapse, fits and sometimes even death. HOW TO DEAL WITH HEAT STROKE IN DOGS - Place the dog in a cool room or shaded area and use a fan or air conditioning. Pour cool (not cold) water over your dog and massage into fur and skin or submerge your dog in cool water. Never use iced water or ice tins as this can exacerbate the heat stroke. - Spread the fur open or brush backwards to allow heat to flow out. - Take the dog’s temperature. Anything above 103oF (34.5oC) is a medical emergency. - Keep a Paediatric Electrolyte handy at all times, mix with cool water and then give your dog small, regular amounts. - Remain calm to avoid causing your dog any unnecessary stress. - Follow the above recommendations and then seek the help of your vet as soon as possible. TO AVOID HEAT STROKE Avoid leaving your dog in the car or prolonged daytime walks, including around the market ground (it never ceases to amaze me that people walk their dogs around the market at noon). Remember if the temperature gets very high, your dog could suffer heat stroke even in the shade. Avoid the use of muzzles.

KEY COMPUTERS The War between Mac and Windows 5 Benefits to Switch to Mac 1. Superior hardware The design of Apple products from iPhones and iPads through to its MacBooks and Mac Pro are excellent. Cupertino uses premium materials and this shows throughout its range. It’s not just about looks. Apple has helped push the tech world forward introducing Retina Displays, and discarding spinning disks in favour of faster PCIe-based flash storage. Windows OEMs are a generation behind when it comes to screens. Lenovo has tried to one-up Apple by using a 3200 x 1800 resolution in its Yoga Pro 2, but Windows 8 isn’t able to scale up and use all these pixels - so it can’t make full use of apps. 2. The interface Apple’s interface is simple - you pin the apps you want to use to the dock at the bottom of the screen and they are always available. Don’t let the simplicity of Mac OS X fool you. You can run multiple desktops, use iCloud keychain to manage credit card details, share files wirelessly via Airdrop and monitor the system through a comprehensive set of built-in utility tools. It’s also got rapid fire startup and resume times - although Windows 8 machines are comparable in this area. The best thing about using Mavericks OS X is the stability. Three months in and there has been no freezing or crashing - and as a result my productivity has improved. Although I expect system degradation over time, it is shaping up to be less than on any Windows machine I’ve ever owned. 3. No bloatware/free updates Because Apple doesn’t license out OS X to other manufacturers, there’s no bloatware. Windows machines, on the other hand, are plagued with useless programmes, which eat up system resources and are a pain to uninstall. I thought I’d miss Microsoft Office - but this hasn’t been the case. Google Docs is free for web-based word processing
40
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
By Computer City tasks and Apple’s own Pages, Numbers and Keynote are excellent free tools too. 4. No need for anti-virus There are threats out there for the Mac ecosystem, but hackers are preoccupied with tormenting the dominant Windows installed base because it’s still seen as an easier target. Apple has built-in malware protection via the GateKeeper tool. Apple’s machines are also shipped without Java and Flash pre-installed - two of the most vulnerable plugins on the market. This doesn’t mean that Mac users should completely ignore security. Recently, a Trojan known variously as Mac Protector, Mac Defender and MacGuard has been showing up on Apple machines. A window claiming to be the “Apple Security Center” pops up and indicates that it has found viruses on the computer. It then prompts the user to download Mac Protector, a cleverly disguised piece of software intended to steal your credit card information The lack of anti-virus means you don’t experience the slowdown or sudden reboots, and you don’t have to pay for a subscription to a security vendor either. 5. Updating is not a nightmare Windows has always had an update problem. Clicking on the ‘update and restart button’ can lead to mammoth waiting times as you sit there watching tens and sometimes hundreds of updates installing. Windows 8 does not do anything to remedy this. There are no such problems with Mac as Apple rolls out fewer updates - tells you exactly what they are for and installs them quickly. We have now a wide range in new, rebuilt and second- hand Macs. Please visit us for information and possibilities. KEY LAW The AEPD has opened Penalty Proceedings against Google for their Privacy Policy Madrid, June 20, 2013 The Spanish Agency for Data Protection (AEPD) has opened disciplinary proceedings in relation to Google’s new unified privacy policy for most of its services, implemented by the company in March 2012. The proceedings are intended to clarify whether the combination of data from various Google services complies with the Spanish Data Protection Act. Research by the AEPD on Google has indicated infringement in the following areas: 1. Google does not report clearly on the use to be made of data it collects from users, so the AEPD cannot know precisely how Google justifies the collection of personal information or the use to be made of it. 2. As part of Google’s unification of privacy policies, it is possible that Google may combine personal information from one service to another and use it for other purposes. The absence of information from Google would imply that the data processing carried out is illegitimate. 3. Google could be carrying out a disproportionate treatment of user data, since in its privacy policy warns that the data collected can be used without restriction in all services, present and future. Google might be preserving user data indefinitely. The law states that personal data must be cancelled once they are no longer necessary or relevant for the purpose for which they were collected, and Google keeps them beyond these limits. The AEPD considers that the exercise of rights by users

could be hampered and even prevented, because the tools offered by Google to exercise the rights of access, rectification, cancellation and opposition are scattered, are not available to all users, are incomplete, and appear with names that do not always correspond to the matter in question. Accordingly, the disciplinary proceedings accuse Google Inc., Google Spain of the commission of five serious breaches of the Data Protection Act, each punishable with fines of 40,001 Euros up to 300,000 Euros, namely: - The absence of specific legitimate purposes specific for such treatments. - The lack of explanation of the purpose in using the data. - For excessive periods and explanation of purpose for the preservation of data. - For the lack of legitimacy in the treatment of data. - Hindering the exercise of rights of users. It also accuses Google Inc., Google Spain of committing a minor infraction of the Data Protection Act, punishable with fines of 900 Euros to 40,001 Euros for breach of the duty of prior information to the user. This action takes place in the framework of a coordinated action with the Data Protection Authorities of Germany, France, Holland, Italy and the UK. The Spanish Agency for Data Protection agreed to begin this research in the framework of a coordinated action with the Data Protection Authorities of these countries. France has given a deadline of three months for Google to comply with the Data Protection Act. KEY FINANCE A Mixed Bag over the Summer Break Another month passes by and generally when we are enjoying the sun, the markets also take their break. This year however with political uncertainty in a couple of parts of the world, the stock markets are not sure how to react, so we could see some volatility. In the Eurozone Mr Draghi and the ECB took a rather unusual approach and decided that the Central Bank only needed to meet every six weeks instead of four. As expected, they held interest rates, however the ECB is coming under pressure to add further measures to support a weak economic recovery across the Euro area; this view was supported recently by the IMF who are in full support of looser monetary policy in the hope that countries can move away from additional austerity and seek investment opportunities. This view would be very welcome in both France and Italy right now as both countries continue to struggle. In Italy the central bank has revised downwards its growth forecast for this year whilst in France the country’s private sector shrank again. Across the zone however the PMI was decent and did show a recovery. In Spain we have seen continued improvement in our economic affairs and expect to see growth of around 1.3% this year and the latest unemployment figures were much improved. Inflation, or rather lack of it across the Zone, continues to cause concern as does the unemployment situation albeit the next set of figures should be lower, driven down by seasonal demands. Greece in particular is looking at around 20 million visitors thus summer, so

there is a hope that will provide a much needed economic boost. In the UK new car sales continue to improve and economic confidence has returned which was reflected in the latest retail sales figures showing a return to spending. Interestingly for all the talk about house prices, Rightmove has recently announced a fall in average house prices by 8 percent; London again being different, has seen average house prices rise by 20 percent in the last 12 months and around £240 per day - great if you happen to own a house in the area! Banks are in the news and the major banks are concerned over the possibility of break ups as the new commission reviews the current structures. A potential new scandal may be around the corner as a review will take place on the possibility of exchange rate fixing and if this is proven, the fines will no doubt be greater than anything we gave seen in the past. On a brighter note, RBS reported a doubling of half year profits. Exchange Rates 25 June to 25 July High Low £ to $ 1.7175 1.6971 £ to Euro 1.2689 1.2499 Euro to $ 1.3694 1.3446 For more information on how to make the most of your money transfer, contact Moneycorp on 952 587 657 and please mention The Key to Mijas Costa.

RESTAURANTE LA MANDRAGORA Calahonda’s Premier Restaurant specialising in the finest International Haute Cuisine with a Mediterranean twist was established over 25 years ago and is the oldest restaurant in Calahonda and the surrounding area. La Mandragora means “Mandrake” which is a plant with a root that looks like a human and when unearthed, the root screams. The Mandrake gained popularity recently as it was featured in the Harry Potter films. La Mandragora is situated on the middle floor of the El Zoco Commercial Centre in Calahonda. Restaurante La Mandragora is Calahonda’s Premier Restaurant specialising in the finest International Haute Cuisine with a Mediterranean twist. La Madragora is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 7.00 pm. As the name suggests, this restaurant has a magical feel to it. The interior seats 60, has an open kitchen and the decor combines modern design and traditional European decor with many antiques and paintings by Slovakian artist, Jaro Jelenek, adorning the walls. There is a small terrace overlooking the Mediterranean and a much larger terrace outside the entrance to the restaurant. Service is always very attentive and

friendly. Now the best part – the food! Owner, Rudolf, pays great attention to detail and is constantly sourcing new products from the freshest of ingredients and coming up with new, innovative ideas, which are expertly prepared by his chef into the wonderful dishes that we all enjoy. I believe good food is an art form and should awaken all the senses as well as being pleasing to the eye and the palate. Some of the dishes that have excited diners at La Mandragora over the years are starter dishes such as Chicken below 0, marinated fried chicken strips with olive oil ice cream over coloured lettuce, apples and grapefruit with Greek yoghurt and sauce and another firm favourite, Caesar’s mushrooms sautéed with spring onions – you really must try this! Main course favourites are the Slovakian Beef Goulash which I always enjoy and the Lamb Fillet with sugarcane honey and balsamic vinegar reduction is also highly recommended. Please leave room for a delicious dessert – I personally love the Apple Strudel but there are many more to choose from. La Mandragora is a culinary delight but La Mandragora is also renowned for its extensive and excellent wine list of which the staff are very knowledgeable and can help you choose the perfect wine to complement your meal. On this note, Restaurante La Mandragora is hosting its superb wine pairing events again regularly throughout this winter starting in October and at only 29 Euros per person, I would recommend that you book yourself in for one of the exciting Maridaje (wine pairing) events. Restaurante La Mandragora also offers a keenly-priced menu for two with a large starter to share plus a main course each of your choice from a good selection – the perfect excuse for a regular visit! New on the menu are some stunning tapas dishes too! The owner of this restaurant takes great pride in the quality of the cuisine and the discerning diner will return time and again to enjoy the experience that is Restaurante La Mandragora. La Mandragora is recommended by TripAdvisor, the Easy jet magazine and now also Key to Mijas Costa magazine.

KEY FEATURE Editor’s Personal Note
By Sandy Mellule
There seem to be certain times in your life when you get an “Ah Ha” moment. I think I have just had another one of these. I don’t know if there is something in the air at the moment as I know that other people are beginning to experience something similar, but it has happened to me again recently. So many things are happening all at once that it seemed as though things were in total chaos. I think it started when I joined Costa Women, but in a good way. I had been toying with the idea of starting the Holistic Section in the magazine for quite some time and at last as I have met many of the women in the group, this has become a reality in this issue. I hope the majority of the readers will enjoy this section. I am beyond retirement age in the UK, but find myself working more and more hours as each month passes. Like many, I am an ex pat entrepreneur here on the Costa del Sol who is struggling to try and ride out this very long credit crunch

here on the Costa del Sol, but have decided to stay on. Many of you know that I am very proud to have become a grandmother this year. Although my mother is now fast approaching 81 years of age, my father died soon after I moved out here at the tender age of 68. So, now I think it is time for me to look after “me” and start to find time to do at least some of the things that I enjoy and also some that I have always wanted to do, as none of us know when we will no longer be able to do these things any more. So, if any of my advertisers (many of whom have also become my friends over the years) are reading this, please, please I ask you all to let me have your content for the next issue in good time so that I can continue bringing you all Mijas Costa’s favourite magazine with the same enthusiasm for many years to come AND enjoy a little bit of my life and my precious family (especially my nearest and dearest that do not live on the Costa del Sol) now that I am in my autumn years!

RESTAURANTS COSTA DEL SOL.COM
We are pleased to announce that we will be launching www. restaurantscostadelsol.com this autumn. Following on from the success of the restaurant guide in the magazine and also the online version, we decided quite some time ago that it would be a good idea to launch a comprehensive website for restaurants along the Costa del Sol, not just restricting it to Mijas Costa. The new restaurantscostadelsol.com will stand alone so anyone on the Costa del Sol can advertise from our new platform. The website will be smart-device friendly and will include a legend, full photo gallery, review, menus, interactive map and location, opening hours and a video if required. Restaurantscostadelsol. com will also have a dedicated Facebook page. You will soon be able to search for restaurants on our website by type and area. We also anticipate that the restaurants listed on restaurantscostadelsol.com will soon be found on the first page of search engines. We are offering a free Tita Spices Starter Pack for the first 5 restaurants to sign up to the website. Restaurant owners, please see page 65 for further details. Readers – we hope you will enjoy using our new online restaurant guide later this year, but you will of course still be able to access the
