Welcome to the October issue of Key to Mijas Costa. In my office it is 26º but my little granddaughter in the UK is on the swing in the park with her woolly hat and coat on and that is exactly why I love this time of year in Mijas Costa so much! I would like to welcome Cecilia Tacchi to the magazine. She is a doctor and now a “patient advocate”. One of the biggest problems we have here relates to our health. Even if we have quite a good command of Spanish, how can we expect to get it right with the medical terminology, especially when we are not feeling at our best? Cecilia not only does this for you, but she can help you with all your patient care from start to finish. Things are different here to what we are used to, especially the health system, and I am sure we do not really know what we are entitled to or how to make sure we get it. Please see page 19

We have expanded our Holistic Section in this issue with more interesting articles for you to read as well as some new practitioners, some of whom you can meet at the annual Mind, Body & Spirit Festival in Marbella later this month, including Dorota Rozmus who you can find out about on page 25. This leads me on nicely to the numerous events in the coming months. A selection of these are on page 38. Lucy is Missing – if you have seen the dog whose information is on page 40, her owner will be over the moon if she gets her back. Finally, don’t forget to book early for Christmas as some of the restaurants have very little availability already. You will find a great selection as always in our Restaurant Section which starts on page 54. Until December…

KEY BEAUTY Choose Warmer Colours for the Cooler Weather
By Tracy, Hair Magic
In this issue we are going to talk about colouring your hair. During the summer it’s very hard to keep the colour in as it fades so quickly so we don’t really experiment as there’s no point. Now we are coming into cooler weather, it’s the time to
use warmer colours and change a little. As we aren’t in the sun so much we look paler, so: THE DIFFERENT COLORS AVAILABLE TO US There are 3 different types of colour: SEMI PERMANENT If you aren’t sure what colour will suit you and you want to experiment, SEMI PERMANENT colour is great as it comes out in 6 to 8 washes. The other reason to use SEMI PERMANENT is when you only have a few grey hairs to cover. If you have more than 30% grey, I’m afraid you will need a PERMANENT colour to cover them. HI LIGHTS OR LOW LITES This is great if you don’t want to colour your hair every 6 weeks as there is very little re-growth. Hi lights means lighter streaks and low lights means darker or other colours (not blond). This is done with tin foil. THEN WE HAVE PERMANENT COLOURS These don’t wash out they grow out, and if you have a lot of grey hair then a permanent colour is probably better for you. What really looks nice is a PERMANENT colour with LOW LITES as this looks so natural. If you would like to come for a free consultation with Tracy at Hair Magic, she can help you choose the right colour for you. Just call and make an appointment. Please download a QR Reader App and scan the QR code on this page to see my new website www.hairmagicspain. com which is now also smart device responsive.

KEY HEALTH
Is the Internet a Reliable Source of Information for Health? It’s been said that 70 to 80 percent of healthcare is self-care. But when healthcare turns to medical care -when disease arrives- it requires information most of us don’t have. Today, ordinary people can find information online that they could never reach before. So, smart web users are increasingly becoming e-patients: empowered, engaged, equipped and enabled. Recent reports suggest that 80 percent of online adults turn to the Web for health advice and information, and one in four chronic-disease patients goes online to find others like themselves. It makes sense: We go online to learn about far less important things, so it’s natural to do so when a family member’s health is at stake. Clearly, people are learning to find what they need online. The problem is, how do you filter the gold from the garbage? Answer: Turn to professionals. This suggests that “paging Dr. Google” doesn’t replace professionals, it supplements them. Beware, not everyone online is trustworthy; it is suggested that up to 50% of medical/healthcare information online is unreliable. So yes, feel free to research your family’s health—after all, whose health is it? Just be smart about it. The same as with anything you do online, inform yourself, think and verify: never trust just one type of source. The Internet user’s first responsibility is to learn which websites are the most trustworthy. Sometimes the answer is obvious: the NHS direct site will give you more reliable, evidence-based information about the flu than the blogs of flu sufferers trying out novel treatments. But the reliability question does not always have an obvious
By Medilink
answer. Some patient-based websites (e.g. patientsLikeme.com) are excellent sources of information about the experiences of patients with complex medical conditions. Meanwhile, some sites that at first seem to be simply informative are advancing the agenda of a commercial enterprise. For example, depression.com, despite its innocent-sounding domain name, is anything but innocent. A few clicks will take you to a description of depression as a neuro-chemical disorder that might respond well to medication. The makers of the antidepressants Paxil and Wellbutrin sponsor the site. Source reliability isn’t the only thing that Web users have to be careful about. Some symptom checkers (Webmd.com) are often more alarming than empowering; online consultations with unknown “experts” (Justanswer.com) can lengthen, rather than shorten, the process of finding answers to medical questions and the fact is that even good information isn’t helpful if you don’t know how to interpret it or how to use it for good decision-making. A study done for Microsoft in 2008 demonstrated that online health-information seekers tend to “catastrophise”: a person Googling “headache” is more likely to follow links to “brain tumour” than to “sinus infection.” We should be informed about health maintenance and illness prevention, and we should learn as much as we can about our own chronic conditions, but we need to do it sensibly. KEY HEALTH Bio-Multi Vitamin and Mineral The Easier Way to get Everyday Protection What is in Bio-Multi Vitamin and Mineral Bio-Multi Vitamin and Mineral contains a range of vitamins and minerals together with other relevant micronutrients. These include: Vitamins A, Vitamin B Complex, C, D3, E, Chromium, Copper, Magnesium, Manganese and Selenium. Bio-Multi Vitamin and Mineral does not contain beta-carotene, making it suitable for smokers who are advised not to supplement with this vitamin. Antioxidants are mutually supportive within the body, which is why combination supplements can be more effective than large amounts of single antioxidants. Why take Bio-Multi Vitamin and Mineral? Strict Standards Like all Pharma Nord products, Bio-Multi Vitamin and Mineral is manufactured to pharmaceutical standards and offers superior levels of bio-availability (the levels of absorption of nutrients by the body). Combat Free Radicals Bio-Multi Vitamin and Mineral contains 18 antioxidants and other vitamins and minerals which protect cells from attack by harmful free radicals. Free radicals are created all the time as by products of our body’s own metabolism and by external factors like pollution, car fumes, chemicals in our food, smoking and alcohol, to name a few. This heavy exposure to free radicals can easily overload our body. Modern lifestyle makes it wise to increase our antioxidant intake through supplementation with a quality multivitamin preparation. Protection Antioxidants can help to protect cells from free radical damage by neutralising them. Antioxidants such as vitamins A, C and E and the minerals selenium and zinc are found in colourful fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Unfortunately, their quality is undermined by food processing and packaging, the use of chemicals and pesticides, to mention just a few drawbacks of “fresh” food. Antioxidant levels may be depleted in people who have a diet high in convenience foods, people undergoing strenuous physical exercise and those suffering from chronic illness. Bio-Multi Vitamin and Mineral is sugar and gluten free and is available in 60 and 150 tablet packs. Bio-Multi Vitamin and Mineral and You Does Your Daily Multivitamin Offer Enough Protection? Vitamins are chemical substances which are important for the normal functioning of the body. Minerals are inorganic substances present in the environment. Like vitamins, min-

erals are essential for the majority of processes occurring within the body. Vitamins and minerals cannot be made in the body. They have to come via diet or supplementation. Many people take their vitamins every day to ensure that their bodies have enough nutrients to keep them healthy and yet, there is no way of knowing whether the nutrients are being properly absorbed in the body. In addition, there is also a difference between the amount of antioxidants necessary to prevent basic deficiency and the higher dosages which provide optimum protection. How Much Bio-Multi Vitamin and Mineral Should I Take? Pharma Nord recommends an intake of 1-2 tablets per day, to be taken with meals. Are There Any Contra-Indications? Pregnant and lactating women and those on medication should seek professional advice prior to taking nutritional supplements.

KEY HEALTH Why Replace Missing Teeth? When a tooth is lost, far too often little thought is given to the consequences of this loss. Obviously if it is at the front of the mouth, then the thought of an embarrassing gap may motivate a patient to seek a replacement tooth, but if it is further back in the mouth very often it is ignored. The extraction of a tooth leads to bone loss in the vicinity of the extraction, often causing gum recession and root exposure of the adjacent teeth. Then the adjacent teeth may tilt towards the gap changing the bite and leading to food trap areas which can lead to decay. The opposing tooth may start to over erupt into the space, this can lead to problems in the opposing arch, and changes to the bite and sometimes pain in the jaw joint. The loss of teeth may lead to a patient changing their bite to compensate for the loss, which in turn can cause pain in the jaw joint. What are the Options? You can replace lost teeth with: 1. Implants - They are the closest you can get to healthy, natural teeth. Dental Implants are replacement roots made of titanium which can be used to replace an individual tooth or for an implant-supported bridge or denture containing multiple teeth. They will allow you to confidently eat, smile laugh, talk, play and enjoy all your regular activities of everyday life without thinking about your teeth.
18
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
By Sonrisa Dental Clinic
2. Dentures - removable plastic or metal frameworks carrying false teeth. Dentures can replace missing teeth, but have many drawbacks. They cover soft tissues and provide areas for food to trap; they can cause the loss of taste and have to be removed for cleaning. They can sometimes cause the loss of other teeth. If they are not cleaned thoroughly they can cause decay in the teeth they fit round. 3. Bridges - These are fixed replacement teeth. They are attached to your natural teeth and are fixed permanently. Normally you fit crowns to the adjacent teeth either side of the gap and carry the missing tooth from the crowns. Sometimes they are glued to your adjacent teeth, this saves crowning the teeth. They are made of porcelain and are very natural looking. The material of choice today is zirconium, because it is very natural, strong, and biocompatible. What is important is that you should always try and maintain a complete arch of teeth with no gaps, to preserve a normal bite and function of your teeth. The replacement of choice would be the permanent solution, either an Implant or a fixed bridge.

KEY HEALTH Patient Advocacy Compass Health Guidance provides a ‘patient advocacy’ service, reducing the stress for patients at a difficult time, as M.D. Cecilia Tacchi explains. What is it? A patient advocate is someone who acts as a link between the patient and the medical services (Doctors and administration), helping with consultations and the decision-making process. This reduces the fear and stress for patients, which can mean better results being achieved through the treatment. What does a patient advocate do? Patient advocates are involved in the process from the start; organising and preparing consultations with specialists, translating and taking notes, ensuring both parties understand the situation. They also help the patient search for other treatment options that are available and make sure the patient has access to their medical history. Why did you decide to do this? When I was awaiting the birth of my second child, I realised that during the consultations I was treated like a scared and nervous little girl. That’s when I started to question how it would be for other women. I never thought this would be a problem, but on becoming the patient, the situation changed. When I started working privately, I saw how some people fought their insurance companies to get
By M.D. Cecilia Tacchi authorisation for treatment. It bothered me that people had to fight bureaucracy while ill, so I wanted to help them. Why is this service important? With the health system now so big and fragmented, primary doctors no longer have the time or tools to act as a coordinator between the patient and specialist, and best results are achieved when treatment is coordinated. Translators are not often available in hospitals, and they rarely have enough medical knowledge to ask questions on the patient’s behalf, therefore patient advocates can meet with patients and their families first, to then analyse the aims of the consultation. The objective is not to oppose doctors, nor look for errors, but to ensure the management of the patient’s health is coordinated in such a way that it achieves the best results with the least possible stress. What services are offered? Help getting healthcare in Spain, preparation for consultations by reviewing the case and outlining the aims, accompanying to the appointment to translate and help understanding, reviewing the appointment to discuss options and alternatives, setting up follow-on appointments, etc. More information, including a blog about the Spanish healthcare system can be found at http://compasshealthcareguidance.com/

KEY HEALTH Thai Foot Massage
By Pat Kaines
Thai Massage is system of massage and manipulation developed in Thailand and influenced by the traditional medicine systems of India, China and South East Asia. From this traditional technique, which dates back over 2600 years, comes Thai Foot Massage. Thai Foot Massage is a vigorous massage of both the feet and lower legs up to and including the knees. There are over 700 pressure points located in the bottom of the foot corresponding to the internal organs and systems of the body. These points on the feet and legs are kneaded, stretched, massaged and pressed, with particular pressure from the thumbs and knuckles and also by the use of a short wooden stick. The treatment includes working on Sen lines which are the equivalent of the Chinese Meridian (or energy) lines. This ensures a whole body workout, with all the major body parts and internal organs being stimulated to release and let

go of any blockages and ‘stuck’ energy. A Thai Foot massage will help you to rebalance your body and mind, eliminate wastes and toxins from the body and invigorate you both mentally and physically. More specifically, it will help to boost your immune system, speed up physical healing and increase your overall energy levels. KEY HOLISTIC Psychosynthesis and Naturopathy These are some of the frequently asked questions when people first hear about Psychosynthesis and Naturopathy: Can you explain what Psychosynthesis is? Psychosynthesis is a modality of psychotherapy, established by Dr. Roberto Assagioli, an Italian psychiatrist and acquaintance of Freud and Jung. He was way ahead of his time by integrating Eastern and Western techniques such as guided visualisation and meditation. Psychosynthesis lends itself well to counselling, coaching or consulting. Psychosynthesis is a tool for personal and interpersonal growth. It offers creative, effective ways to explore our conscious and unconscious mind. It can help us heal wounds from the past, which still impact our life today. It can heal parts of our personality that are in conflict, and help to find solutions that truly benefit our authentic sense of self. It offers an optional spiritual perspective, which is well worth exploring for those who are open to it. Psychosynthesis holds the vision that there is a potential in each of us waiting to be unleashed. It is a unique, inclusive approach. There are just a handful of Psychosynthesis counsellors practising in Spain, all trained abroad. Presently, I am the only Psychosynthesis counsellor in this area. What do you focus on in your counselling practice? I offer counselling for relationship issues, depression, grief, anxiety, support with chronic illness or general lifestyle issues and changes. The focus of my work is on healing trauma and addiction. Childhood trauma can originate from simply not being seen for who we really are. Trauma is also caused by living through stressful situations, such as an accident or a natural disaster, acute or chronic illness, as well as grieving the death of a loved one. Severe trauma is inflicted by abuse - emotional, physical, or sexual – and it tends to affect how we function in various areas of our daily lives. The client needs to feel safely held before healing the trauma can start. Addictions include substance abuse of alcohol, drugs and nicotine, eating disorders, addictions to relationships, romantic intrigue, sex, as well as co-dependency, workaholism, gambling, excessive spending or debting and addictions to internet or modern technology. Often both go together. Trauma is the underlying primal wounding; addictive patterns are the survival strategy through which we try to suppress feeling the pain of the trauma. This goes on until the coping strategy ceases to work and the person can no longer sustain the self-abuse. Psychosynthesis lends itself well to working with trauma and addiction, enhanced by its inherent spiritual aspect. Carl Jung said, the “craving for alcohol is the equivalent of the spiritual thirst of our being for wholeness.” Reconnecting with our primal wounding, and to a spiritual dimension of hope, while being fully seen and accepted, offers a way out. Therefore, it makes sense to address both trauma and addiction at the same time. What other options do I have to enhance the counselling process? For those open to the principles of Twelve-Step work based on
By Petra Mikat
Alcoholics Anonymous and related self-help groups; those can be used within and without the counselling process to provide additional support. I also offer group counselling. Additional group work supports the individual client in their growth process. Participants benefit significantly from witnessing their own challenges in their peers. Feedback from peers enhances each participant’s personal growth. A commitment to group counselling can lead to lifechanging benefits. Those who cannot afford one-to-one counselling do find it is a cost-effective option to start the healing process. In my workshops I address topics such as Authentic Living, Healthy Relationships, Letting Go of the Old and Embracing the New, and How to Deal with Aspects of Our Personality Getting in the Way. I give talks on topics such as Healing of Trauma & Addiction, Recovering from Eating Disorders, Psychosynthesis as a Tool for Personal and Spiritual Growth as well as Holistic Healing with Naturopathy and Kinesiology. If you are interested in attending a group, workshop, or talk, please contact me. What is Naturopathy and Kinesiology and how does it support my healing process? Naturopathy provides a natural system of healing and complementary medicine. In the hands of a trained and experienced practitioner, the side effects of natural remedies are significantly less than those of pharmaceutical drugs. They can help heal both acute and chronic conditions. This is especially helpful for healing the body when it has been abused for years by alcohol, drugs, eating disorders or stress. Often times in eating disorders, the digestive system has been damaged and needs to be restored. Kinesiology helps to select the right remedy and offers a way through food allergies and sensitivities while healing the body. Where did you train and what are your qualifications? Born in 1966, I started training in Psychotherapy and Naturopathy in 1995. Over the years, I trained in Germany, the UK, the US, India, Mexico, and Spain. I hold a Post Graduate Diploma in Psychosynthesis Counselling from the Psychosynthesis & Education Trust, London, accredited by the University of East London, and a qualification as a Practitioner of Alternative Medicine & Psychotherapy issued by the German Health Authorities. In my former career in International Marketing and Business, I worked as Strategic Marketing Director, among others for the leading manufacturer of homeopathic remedies in Germany. I also provide coaching, as a one-off or in multiple sessions. My training in Mediation helps to resolve interpersonal conflicts of any kind. With a solid background in Business and Marketing, I can offer business consulting as well as trainings for team building and group dynamics. My practice is located in Calahonda with convenient parking nearby. I also do online sessions via Skype. I work in English, Spanish, and German. KEY HOLISTIC Welcome to Women’s Wellness and how to balance your hormones with Progesterone Therapy. ProgesterAll is a non-steroid, bio-identical hormone balance cream, which your body can relate to and recognize. This miracle cream became know by Dr. John Lee, an American doctor who realized through investigation that women didn’t need HRT, they needed Natural Progesterone Cream. Doctors worldwide were prescribing HRT without knowing if the patient had hormone balance or not: If you were 50 or over, had irregular periods, night sweats and hot flushes – they said you needed it. Dr. Lee pioneered Progesterone Therapy and made information available for women around the world. Women were and are today suffering with flushes & night sweats – it is in fact due to excess estrogen, so the last thing they needed was more estrogen! Even though the HRT drug was a mixture, it was in fact killing women around the world. The main Estrodilβ was in fact banned in 1995 in the UK, Italy, France and America. Women deserve the right to know that Natural Progesterone is the answer to most of their symptoms by balancing the hormones naturally. Stress & Hormones - as we age we should in fact become more relaxed and be ready for our future as a mature woman without menstruation and its symptoms. Unfortunately today our lives are so busy with economical stress, family problems and personal relationships that stress plays a large role in hormone imbalance. If we, as women, are to balance our hormones and get relief from related symptoms, we must learn to get our lives in order to become stress free. How can we do that? First we need to look at our home life and talk openly with our husbands and children (if the children are at reasoning age). Tell them how you feel and discuss problems on a one-to-one basis too. Explain

By Aly Farmer that you need help in the home and everyone should take responsibility for their room and maybe even cook occasionally – or make a timetable and everyone gets a chance to cook something. Find time for yourself, arrange your week and plan it! Make sure you have “my time”. Go for a walk, meet friends, go to an exercise class or do something else you like to do. You must have your own time. You may only want to sit and read a book. Don’t rush your work in the house, take it easy, plan and do things at your own pace. When you go to bed, sit comfortably with a soft light on. Imagine you have a box in front of you - go through your day. When you get to a bad part - imagine you are putting those negative things in the box, move your hands and throw it in the box. When you come to the good things -feel the warmth of the feeling you felt when you saw your friend, sister or child and hold that feeling. Sit very still and quiet and ponder over the good things in your day. You will sleep much more relaxed and fall asleep easily. For more information: www. menopausesymptoms.co. Migraine & Hormone Balance – many women don’t realize other things that our doctors just don’t tell us. Mid-cycle our estrogen rises to balance with progesterone to enable us to conceive – this surge in estrogen causes 4-5 days of headaches or even migraine. This would be around day 14-18, when ovulating. Women who are migraine suffers are prone to this. The next step is 3 days before your period the hormones become unbalanced, estrogen becomes the dominant hormone and causes you to feel upset, tearful, stressful and even sometimes very depressed; the estrogen hormone has again become dominant and progesterone is low. With Natural Progesterone Therapy all these symptoms can be erased and you will sail through your menstrual years without PMT or mid-cycle migraine. Migraine occurs when the veins in the brain constrict, the blood flows slowly producing small mounds in the veins and causing pain. Try to combine good eating habits when using Progesterone Cream to avoid migraine. At the same time during mid-cycle and pre-menstrual days, it’s advisable to cut down on fatty foods, refined sugar, cakes and pastries, but increase your intake of fruit and vegetables and healthy vegetarian-type foods. Avoid sugar, chocolate, coffee, oranges and orange juice – which cause acidity and aids migraine attacks. Eat light meals in the evenings and avoid caffeine and too many carbohydrates in the evenings. Food will be digesting while you sleep; with excess estrogen and digestion, you have a good chance of migraine, and could well wake up around 5am or wake in the morning feeling like you have been hit by a bus.

KEY FEATURE Dario Meets Artists Mugge Fischer & Ose del Sol, of Grupo Artenovum
Over the years our readers can testify that I have written about some quite amazingly talented people, who live and work on the Costa del Sol. Mugge Fischer and Ose del Sol can easily be described as outstanding artists for their imaginative ideas, versatility and talents they possess. I know this from working with them. No matter what problem you present to them, they always find a way to create a positive direction and outcome. So I was delighted to be able to interview them for Key to Mijas Costa Magazine. Mugge what brought you to Spain? Well, I guess like anyone else, the climate, the sun, the need for a little adventure, and the need for a year living abroad (that has turned into almost 14 years now). What are the differences between working here and in Denmark? I am so fortunate to have jobs that I like; my day job with Norrbom Marketing and my 24/7 job with my own company, Artenovum. I guess there are a lot of differences between working here and in Denmark, but all depending on the sector, the city and the place and your education. How did you meet Ose del Sol and when did you found the Artenovm design company? I meet Ose del Sol in Madrid the year 2000, when he was working there as a Mural Painter and he was already back then, a very good artist. I went back to Denmark to finish a project for hearing impaired people that I was doing for the Ministry of Social Welfare. When that ended in 2001 I moved to Spain, but it wasn’t until June 2004 that we decided to start Artenovum, and decided that Ose to go 100% for the art. And that has been 10 years now....time does pass very quickly. Ose and you have quite an outstanding reputation for creating popular events and have created some amazing projects in your time here. Tell me about some of them? Well as you know Dario, I have always been involved in show business, first as a dancer, then actor/singer and also as a director. Before I went to Spain I directed 1-2 musicals a year in Denmark, which was great fun. Besides small and limited exhibitions, we always try to make a big event every second year. We are both sort of perfectionists which is why we only do things according to our rule: Do it well, or don’t do it.

In recent years the 3 most outstanding events that we have made, has been the presentation of the Marbella Song, where we were involved in the organisation and presentation at Da Bruno’s Sul Mare, attended by a fantastic audience, including Royalty and representation from the Marbella Town Hall, and also one of my portraits of the legendary Yanela Brooks, was used for the cover of the CD with the “Marbella Marbella” song; the music of course written by you. In 2012 we were back at Casino Marbella, and with the fantastic help from the Marketing director of the Casino Marbella, Montserrat San Francisco, we managed to make it into the event of that summer, with more than 500 guests. Are you involved in anything new and exciting at the moment? Yes, of course, we are always involved in something new. This year we have been busy designing our new line of colourful, comfortable, unique and creative clothes, all made in Spain. We started with a small summer collection, and have just finished the fall and winter collection. All is internet based, so all sales are made on-line – a small exclusive brand – growing day by day. www.t-sharte.com. And at present of course, there is the new Amsterdam Musical project, which we are so for tunate to be involved in, in many ways. We have made designs for the logo, we are making sketches for the costumes and one of the main characters in the musical is the Donna de Amsterdam, painted especially for this musical by Ose del Sol, as a par t of our collection www. donnasdelmundo.com - it is a very exciting project, fantastic music, a great story – working closely together with other creative people. It is so much fun, and it will be a great success. Other than that, we are still selling our exclusive Works of Art, to art collectors and buyers around the world. www.osedelsol.com – amplifying our Graphic Collection and our Home Collection as well. So yes we are busy, involved, and being creative, which besides all our friends of so many different nationalities, is the most enjoyable part of life. Thank you Mugge and Ose. Very good luck with all that you do especially Amsterdam the Musical, which by anyone’s standard, is an audacious project. However there are times even I roll my eyes to the ceiling when a new feature is installed, as quite often there are glitches and issues that send my inbox pinging with questions from students on “how do I use this?” or “what happened to that?”. This time however Facebook have got it fairly darn right from the off and once Facebookers have the hang of it, Facebook will probably gain a few more very happy customers. The Save feature is a time-saver for those who love to look at Facebook, but don’t because you know you’ll get distracted by lots of shiny buttons to press. What if I told you, you can now browse your newsfeed and be outta there in minutes without getting distracted? Interested? Let me explain – the new “Save” feature allows you to, how can I say this, “save” a newsfeed item for later, such as a link in a status update by your friends, an event or Page post link (currently you cannot save for later photos or posts without links). KEY FEATURE Making Scents
By Sue Cross
When Kristin came into the house the following day for her lunch, she was delighted that three more customers had ordered oils. This time she was prepared and had bottled up a sizeable batch in advance. She was also excited to see a letter with a Spanish stamp waiting for her and recognised the writing to be that of Celine, her friend and confidante, who, after a disastrous marriage to James, had married her old flame, Nick. She had joined Nick and moved to his beautiful old farmhouse in southern Spain where she, together with Samantha and her husband Carlos, helped him run a guesthouse offering painting holidays. Sitting down with a sandwich, she ripped open the letter in anticipation. Dear Kristin,
It has been a scorching summer and we are glad that October has arrived with cooler temperatures. We’ve had a busy few months with a full house of mainly English guests enjoying a break and a place of peace to practise their painting. Samantha and Carlos are well, as are the children, and all send you and the family their love. I have some exciting news. It has been confirmed that I am expecting a baby! Nick is so thrilled – he can’t wait to be a father again. I haven’t felt sick like I did when I was expecting Annabel, so maybe I’m having a boy. The baby is due in seven months and it is so lovely to have a caring husband after the terrible time I had with James. We never hear from him, but maybe that is a good thing. We are all missing you so much and I wondered if you could come and stay for a while – perhaps in the half term holiday? I feel bad that we can’t put you up but, if we wait until we have no paying guests, we might not see you for years! All of you come if you can because there is an English lady who has moved into the village who is offering B & B. Her rates are very reasonable, as she has just started up. Please, please try and make it!
Celine continued for several more pages about her life in Spain before signing off. Kristin read the letter once more and promised herself that

she would speak to Harry that evening about his offer to mind the children so that she could visit her friends alone. She would just have to hope that Fran could manage the salon without her. The salon phone never stopped ringing all afternoon so that, at the end of the day, Kristin felt frazzled. She needed another pair of hands and placed an advert for a receptionist in the local paper. There was no way that she could ask Fran to hold the fort until she had some help. Only then would she tell her about her plans for a holiday in Spain. A week later, after interviewing several people, most of whom were unsuitable, Kristin decided to offer Claudia the receptionist’s job. She had a pleasant speaking voice, was confident without being arrogant, and was well groomed. Although she had only just left school and had no experience, Kristin thought it would be easier to have a blank canvas on which to work, rather than taking on someone who was set in her ways. Claudia was thrilled and agreed to start work the following Monday. “You’ll be busy preparing cubicles for treatments, cleaning the salon, making drinks for clients and answering the phone. Appearance is very important. So always look well groomed – no chipped nail varnish or scruffy shoes – you know what I mean. You’ll also have to learn about the treatments and products so that you can sell both. I’ll put you on a month’s trial and, if we both get on, then you have a job. Then, if everything works out, we can talk about commission,” Kristin told her. Claudia picked up her work effortlessly and was such an asset to the business that Kristin was able to mention the holiday to Fran. Harry had already agreed to look after the children that week, as it was half term. MAKING SCENTS by Sue Cross is available as a paperback or ebook on Amazon. KEY ASTROLOGY The Sun, Moon and Ascendant Signs …
What do they really mean in the Birth Chart? I suspect most of you reading this article will at some time or another have read the horoscope section of a paper or magazine to see what the ‘stars’ hold for you. However using the sun sign alone to predict future events is very much a hit and miss affair, mainly because the other nine planets and the Ascendant that we all have in our individual birth charts, are missing! A bit like trying to make a Victoria sponge cake with only one ingredient! Just knowing the sign and degree of your Sun, Moon and Ascendant can highlight a number of personality traits and characteristics that are individual to you… which helps to explain why not everyone born under the same Zodiac sign is the same! Because there are ten planets in each person’s birth chart, predictions solely using Sun signs can often be far off the mark! The Sun, essential character! Sun symbolizes our basic personality and the Zodiac sign it occupies describes our character’s essential qualities. The Sun, by sign and house position, describes our ego’s traits and our core personality and although some say it’s the most important sign we have, that’s not true. The Moon and Ascendant signs are just as important, but they can’t be determined properly without an accurate date, place and time of birth. This is because the Moon changes signs every 2 ½ days and the Ascendant sign changes every couple of hours, every day! Knowing our Sun sign traits is all well and good but it’s only a fraction of the story; while a Sun sign may occasionally be able to define what’s happening for us on a conscious level, that isn’t who we are entirely ... not by a long shot! The Moon, emotions and responses! Moon symbolizes our inner self, the part of us that responds from habit, feelings and instinct. These traits are who we are inside ... an intimate side of our character that only we and those close to us really know. Sometimes our Moon sign may be in a different element (fire, earth air, water) to our Sun sign and this can create an inner conflict. As an example, a person’s Moon may be in nurturing and home loving Cancer on the day and time of birth but they were born in the Sun sign of Aquarius! Imagine, Aquarius Sun on the one hand is saying I want to be free to be my unique self, no ties thank you, but the Moon in Cancer is saying, I want closeness, home comforts and a loving family! What then? The ideal would be to choose close loving relationships that allow personal freedom, on both sides. This
By Janet Powell
kind of conflict often affects people negatively if they aren’t aware of what’s happening to them on an inner level; they can’t understand why they feel the way they do! It’s a challenge, but one that can be overcome if the inner self is allowed some air time! Also at hand is the birth chart… a better understanding of where the planets are by sign and house in our birth chart can indicate the cause of a perceived inner conflict and as with everything, becoming aware is the first step towards integrating those parts of ourselves that we hadn’t previously understood! The Ascendant (Rising Sign), temperament and personality. This is the sign that is rising on the Eastern horizon at the time and place of birth and because this sign changes so quickly, calculating an accurate Ascendant will depend on the exact time of birth. For example, if a person was born around sunrise, the Ascendant sign might be the same as their Sun sign. The Ascendant represents how we project ourselves out in the world, and how the world sees us back! It describes our temperament, the lens through which we view everything outside of ourselves and the personality we put on public display! It’s a side of our character we willingly show the outside world. If you know your Ascendant sign, it’s worth remembering when checking the daily and monthly zodiac columns … rather than looking up the sign of your Sun, look up the sign of your Ascendant! This is because a forecast based on the Ascendant is likely to be more accurate regarding life circumstances and immediate future and there will be times when you can relate to the reading quite easily. These basic parts of our character provide three different views of our life, all of them valid, but the most interesting part of learning and understanding more about the planets and signs in our own chart is when we discover a myriad of potentialities previously undreamt of… that is, up to now! If there are any readers who would like to know the sign/degree of their Moon and Ascendant, send me an email with your birth details i.e. full date and place of birth (town & country), and an accurate time of birth and I’ll forward the information to you. For those wishing to learn more about Astrology, I will be holding more Workshops for Beginners in Mijas Costa in the New Year. Write to me at astrology4everyone@yahoo.co.uk for details about these events and information about private readings Until December, Hasta luego… :)

KEY SPORTS The Ryder Cup 2014
By Steve Billingham
There was entertaining talk of 57-year-old Bernhard Langer being recalled (as there was in 2010) after impressive Seniors form and also a tied eighth finish at the Masters, plus 50-yearold Miguel Angel Jimenez, who has won on the Euro tour this season. In the end, Stephen Gallagher got the nod ahead of Luke Donald, a bold pick by Paul McGinley but logical based on recent form. Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood were only in as wildcards but after Poulter’s blinder at the last one, it was understandable. Westwood’s experience would steady the ship. No Tiger Woods in the American team this time. 50/1 Hunter Mahan secured his Ryder Cup slot with a victory in the Barclays tournament in late August. Spoilsports! Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley both withdrew from the BMW Championship after 2 poor rounds. Mickelson shot a 76 and pulled out – only 24 hours earlier he had declared Cherry Hills ‘a fun course to play.’ The Ryder Cup commenced at Gleneagles in Perthshire at 7.35 am on September 26 with the fourball. Ian Poulter, paired with rookie Stephen Gallagher, did not perform and were beaten. Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia lost on the final green to Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley. The conditions were very windy and cold. Westwood and Donaldson were performing better though and Stenson and Rose had performed solidly winning both their fourball and foursomes matches comfortably. McIlroy and Garcia teed off again in the afternoon with Europe trailing 1½ - 2½ and managed to get half a point despite being 2 down with 3 to play. Big iron shot by Garcia on the last after McIlroy’s drive had hit a tree. He had holed a putt from 40 feet on hole 17. Victor Dubuisson teamed effectively with Graeme Mcdowell and Europe were 5-3 up

after the first day’s play. In his fourball match on day 2 paired with Rory McIlroy, Ian Poulter chipped in beautifully from 40 yards at the 15th, having played ‘like a 5 handicapper for much of the tournament.’ He then holed a long putt at the next to level the match up with Patrick Walker and Rickie Fowler who was holing some nice putts himself. A pitch at the last to a few feet by Poulter and an exquisite chip by McIlroy, and a very fine match was halved. Stenson and Rose produced a third straight win. And so to the afternoon foursomes. Victor Dubuisson hit a crisp iron shot to 3 feet at the 11th, Walker also hit a beauty and both putts were conceded. Europe won that match 5 & 4. Rickie Fowler and Hunter Mahan look to be the only Americans holing putts. Jimmy Walker missed a tiddler while Kaymer missed several putts for Europe after starting with a birdie fest. Rose and Kaymer halved a match with Spieth and Mahan which they should have won 3 and 2 but Europe were still 10 – 6 up going into the singles. Phil Mickelson sat the second day out. The final day’s singles play and Graeme Mcdowell came back from 3 down to win his match with Jordan Spieth. Rose finished all square and Stenson carelessly missed from four and a half feet for a half point with Patrick Reed. Martin Kaymer chipped in for an eagle and a win over Bubba Watson. Jamie Donaldson, after missing an 8-footer for victory, played an approach shot to 2 feet at the next. Skipper Tom Watson nodded to Keegan Bradley to concede the putt and Europe won the Ryder Cup with a 14 ½ - 9 ½ lead. The final result was Europe 16 ½ - USA 11 ½.

KEY FEATURE Having a Great ‘Reason Why’ Will Change Your Life? This morning was our fortnightly Women’s Network Business Breakfast which I have the pleasure of hosting. The subject today was ‘What is your ‘passion’ and the ‘reason why’, you are involved in your business?’ But this question doesn’t just have to apply to business, ‘What is your passion and reason why, for anything you do?’ In my latest book ‘Empowering Women How to Live a Magnificent Life’ I ask this very question ‘What is your reason ‘Why’. How big is your passion for your life, your relationships, your work etc, how much do you want them to be all that you dream of? This is the one and only difference between having a Magnificent Life or not. How much do you want it, and what are you prepared to do to get it? One of the ladies there this morning was a personal trainer, she looked amazing, her whole body was in perfect shape and she glowed. So much so, I asked her what her key to success was. She replied ‘discipline, hard work and feeling good about myself!’ But, she continued ‘I used to be overweight and very self conscious, I hated the way I looked and my self confidence was below zero’. Anyway, I asked her what happened, she told me her sister was getting married and she was to be ‘maid of honour’! Well there was the reason! She lost her weight, started exercising, got hooked, and the rest is history. How will you feel once you’ve achieved your goals, as opposed to not achieving them? For me this was, and is, my driving force. It’s not actually about money or assets; it’s about how I feel about myself and the burning desire to share with you my few words of encouragement and what I truly believe we are all deserving of. Sharing the things I’ve learned, through my own toils and troubles, and the tools I’ve discovered, that have made such a difference in my life and reaching out to people who are going through difficult times, so they too can have a happy and fulfilling Magnificent Life.
That’s my hot button, what’s yours? I’ve had my fair share of failures. Abusive relationships, making a million and losing it all knocked the wind out of me but it didn’t stop me picking myself up and getting back on top again. Having seen my mother struggling in her old age to pay the bills and trying to have a happy retirement; I absolutely don’t want that for myself. It’s the ‘reason why’ that will inspire you to take action in anything you want, having a burning desire to make your life count and something to feel proud of. Find your ‘hot button’, what do you feel passionate about? Start today, success is inevitable if you take one step at a time, day by day, growing and learning and be determined not to give up! Let me know what your ‘reason why’ is, and if you’re stuck and need some help, I offer a ‘Rapid Change’ Complimentary Coaching Session where you can get unstuck and to go forward to reaching your goals! My eBook ‘Empowering Women How to Live a Magnificent Life’ is a FREE download at www.joyfahey.com.

KEY FEATURE Tuk Tuk Spain (Part 1)
By Key to Mijas Costa
I was browsing through Facebook one morning, as you do, and came across “tuktukspain”. As I have travelled extensively in the Far East it caught my eye, and I started to investigate. Firstly I liked the page and then sent a message to the owner, who happened to be a student at Malaga University who was presenting this ecological project as part of her degree. I then arranged to meet Myriam and her father, Rudi, who was born in Holland, about the project. When we started to talk, I thought it might be interesting not only to present the project to our readers as it develops, but also to give a little background on the family who have lived in Spain for many years. I will therefore present this article over two issues. Rudi van der Zalm is Dutch. His wife is Spanish and is from Jaen. They met in Switzerland whilst Rudi was working in the hotel industry. They then moved firstly to Gran Canaria and then Tenerife before coming to work in the Time Share industry (Club La Costa and Matchroom, Playa Real) and have lived in Mijas Village itself for a number of years. Rudi now has his own online car rental business which he operates from the centre of Mijas Village. Myriam is the middle of three daughters – the oldest is a nurse and the youngest one is 11, so is still at school. Myriam was born in Spain and enjoyed her school life here and is now studying Business Adminstration at Malaga University. She has travelled extensively. She first came across the Tuk Tuk idea in Amsterdam and what at
36
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
first seemed just something very light hearted has developed into her presentation as her thesis project as the vehicle is 100% electric and is therefore an ecological project that she is putting together. Tuk Tuks are a major form of transport in Thailand, for example, but they pollute the atmosphere, are very noisy and not particularly safe. Myriam would have liked to present her project in the town where she lives, Mijas, but this presents many problems, not least the winding, cobbled streets. She has found that Malaga City itself is very well advanced in its thinking with regard to sustainable energy with the Smartcity Malaga project and so Myriam presented her project in July. The idea is to use the Tuk Tuk as a tourist attraction or for special occasions such as birthdays and celebrations to take customers on a tour and perhaps followed by a visit to a special restaurant. Other ideas can be for golf or other resorts that are a little off the beaten track and this could be a novel way of transporting their customers and offering them a special and unique add-on. The sustainable Tuk Tuk is gaining popularity in other European cities and now it is coming to Andalucia….. In the next issue we will be talking more about the workings and mechanics of the Tuk Tuk, i.e the speed, ITV provisions and other matters, but in the meantime, if you have any ideas for its future use or would like any further information, please visit and like www.facebook.com/tuktukspain of their website www.tuktukspain.es where you can make contact.

KEY FEATURE Album Reviews KASABIAN 48:13 Highlights of the album are ‘Stevie’ for the interesting loops at the beginning. I like the funky Ian Matthews drumming and guitar licks on ‘Treat’. It then goes wicked with a house beat and a funky lo-slung bass-line. This could be a slamming house tune in its own right, it’s like an old early 90’s Warp thing, bit of Kraftwerk in there as well; the outstanding piece for me on the album and one of the smartest pieces of indie I’ve heard in a long time. ‘Explode’ has another electro feel about it, like the Tubeway Army in places while ‘Eez-eh’ is very catchy and dance-ey and stands out along with Treat. The strongest tracks are belters, the others are so-so. It’s a varied selection with influences including mystical, electro, 70’s and other tracks are rockier like their older stuff.
By Steve Billingham KAISER CHIEFS EDUCATION, EDUCATION, EDUCATION AND WAR The album has a soldier fighting in the war theme. Track 2 ‘Coming Home’ is outstanding- slow, funky bass-line, jangling guitars, indie made the proper way and some of the best in ages as is the following track, the fresh sounding ‘Misery Company’ - the chorus is wicked. ‘Ruffians on Parade’ is catchy (woah woah!) and more up-tempo and there is another powerful chorus on ‘Meanwhile Up in Heaven.’ On most albums now there are 4 good songs if that. On here there are 4 belters back to back - a rare feat. The keyboard hooks in ‘Bows and Arrows’ are excellent and there is an inventive marching breakdown in ‘Cannons’ which could easily have been a song in its own right. Final track, ‘Roses’, begins in a wartime documentary voice-over style poem, another effective touch on a very strong album: the best indie album this year.

KEY PETS Lucy is Missing
By Joanna the Dog Groomer
Lucy has been missing since 16th August from the Mijas Road. Firstly I would like to appeal to every reader to please take the time to tell as many people as you know about Lucy. Together we may bring Lucy home. Lucy is a 12-year-old cross – Shih Tzu/Terrier, blue/ grey in colour. She is very much missed by her owner, Lesley who has put an alert on her microchip, alerted all local pounds, rescue centres and the Police. Lesley still goes out searching for Lucy but so far, nothing. We will never give up hope in finding Lucy, but really need as many people as possible to know about Lucy’s story, all over Spain, as she could be anywhere by now. You can contact me by phone or emails (details in the ad on this page) if you would like to know more about Lucy or have any more information. A 500

Euro reward is offered to anybody with information leading to Lucy’s safe return home. Now to my News I have moved back to La Cala so now dogs can be dropped directly to my home – there is parking right outside. I am now also able to offer a few more appointments to new customers. I do all small/medium breeds and I am fully trained in all aspects of grooming including ear plucking/cleaning, anal glands, toenail clipping and I also do a mouth and teeth check. I offer extras such as Argan Oil Treatments and I also do special puppy classes for very young dogs to get them used to being groomed (puppies must have completed all vaccines). I do not use muzzles, restraints, box dryers or cages and only do one dog at a time, meaning less stress for the dog and owners, who can pick up their dogs as soon as they are ready; this takes about 1½ to 2 hours for most dogs. The photos above are of dogs I have groomed for many years and I am sure their owners will be over the moon to see their family members in print! If I can help you in any way, please just call, but please book appointments in advance.

KEY COMPUTERS Windows 10 - Wait - What Happened to 9? Microsoft has officially announced that the next version of the Windows OS will be called ‘Windows 10’- 10? What happened to Windows 9? Originally codenamed “Windows Threshold”, the new operating system essentially does away with the tiled “Metro” user interface that Microsoft had attempted to implement across its entire device line, from desktop PCs to Surface tablets and Windows Phone devices. It is such a substantial leap, according to Microsoft’s executive VP of operating systems, Terry Myerson, that the company decided it would be best to skip over Windows 9, the widely expected name for the next version. Well all the speculation is finally over - for the most part anyway. Windows 10 was launched into the consciousness of Windows enthusiasts around the globe on the 4th October. It was no more apparent then by the fact Microsoft’s blog post about the next version of Windows and the Insider Program website were knocked offline by the crush of traffic. I think there just might be a few people interested in this upcoming version of Windows. Yes, the Start menu is back. Yes, there are virtual desktops. No, the Charms bar hasn’t gone away. And no, we don’t know when Windows 10 will ship or what it will cost. But we’ve seen the technical preview of Windows 10 and the word to bear in mind for this release is productivity. Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore repeatedly emphasised that this is a

very early build without even all the features that have been announced, and that there might be rough spots. We didn’t see any problems in the time we had to try it out. This isn’t the place to look for changes in Explorer or the control panel, let alone desktop tools like Paint and Notepad or Store apps like Music and Video. The technical preview is about the core features that are supposed to prove Microsoft can balance touch, mouse and keyboard without making any users feel abandoned. Windows 10 is all about balancing the demands of different users. It’s not just business users with desktop PCs and keyboards, versus tablet users. Windows is for sensors and data centres and Windows Phone and Xbox One as well as tablets and laptops and desktop PCs and giant wall screens and all the devices in between (at least in Microsoft’s ambitions). But what we’re seeing in this first technical preview release is very much about balancing the heritage of two decades on Windows with the new world of touch, and consumerisation features introduced in Windows 8 by giving them more security options and more management. KEY FINANCE The Euro has been the Weakest of the Major Currencies
By Moneycorp
Unfortunately of late the euro has been the weakest of the major currencies, losing nearly three US cents. It was down by a more modest quarter of cent against the British pound, which had to contend with an increased likelihood that Scotland would vote for independence. The euro took a serious hit when the European Central Bank announced interest rate cuts and a bond-purchase programme which looked suspiciously like quantitative easing, even if it was not billed as such. The markets had been very keen to hear what Mr Draghi would say following his declaration at Jackson Hole that the ECB would ensure the zone would not fall too far back on the economic path to recovery. Cutting the interest rate to .05% was not on everyone’s mind and many economies are still looking for a full blown QE programme. France and Italy in particular cannot wait for this to happen as both economies continue to stagnate. Spain at the moment seems to be recovering with a slight increase in the number of people returning to work albeit seasonally adjusted and 10-year bond sales raising funds quite easily at rates around 2.3% remarkable transformation from those dark days when rates were knocking around 7%. With inflation remaining low and an uneven economic zone, governments still have many hard decisions to make.

In the UK it came as no surprise that the Bank of England held interest rates; the interesting part will be to see how many members this month voted for an increase. By the time you read this we will know. Mortgage approvals in the UK fell during the month of July. The question - is the market cooling or is it simply tougher lending criteria? Construction however still powers ahead and Redrow have announced they need to take on additional staff to cope with demand. Factory growth however has slowed to a 14-month low as concern existed over the tensions between Russia and the Ukraine. Better news for the UK came in the shape of data that suggests the UK is the 9th best placed in terms of economic development but of late the first prize has gone to the States for the fastest factory sector growth. KEY LAW Spanish Law Firms and
Money Laundering - 2014
By Victoria Anzola, Iberdata 21 S.L.
The Executive Service of the Commission for the Prevention of Money Laundering, SEPBLAC, and Bank of Spain are mounting and offensive against law firms in Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga and Marbella who may be involved in undercover Money Laundering operations with their customers. According to the General Bar Council of Spain (CGAE), money laundering inspections are taking place in major law offices in Madrid and Barcelona, with forays into Malaga and Marbella. The SEPBLAC is intending that inspections are to be extended to firms of all sizes and across the country. Lawyers are obliged to inform the Bank of Spain of suspicious customers and transactions. SEPBLAC has conducted inspections of only a few law firms…and added that the FATF (Financial Action Task Force, which works closely with the OECD) has noted that it is not carrying out effective supervision of the legal profession. SEPBLAC has reported to the Bar that the FATF high-
lighted this concern in a recent visit to Spain, and in the coming months FATF will return to Spain to check whether it has remedied the deficiency in monitoring of the sector. SEPBLAC requires very detailed documentation on Law Firms’ clients. The CGAE warns in its circular that if the documentation requirements are not met or the company cannot prove that it complies with the law, they may be very heavily fined. Specifically, the fine can be up to 1.5 million Euros, or 5% of the capital involved, or double the amount of the financial transaction amount. LAWYERS, ACCOUNTANTS, REAL ESTATE AGENTS, FINANCIAL SERVICES LEARN HOW TO COMPLY – you all need to comply with the Prevention of Money Laundering rules.
