CHICAGO SKETCH COMEDY FESTIVAL This quirky, hilarious, community experience runs Jan. 10-20 at Stage 773 — and it’s not to be missed The Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival, which debuted in 2002 when 35 local sketch comedy groups got together to share their talents, is now the largest in the world, hosting more than 180 groups and putting on almost 200 shows over eight days. The festival brings together writers, performers and fans of comedy to not only create, but also celebrate comedy in Chicago, often referred to as the comedy capital of the world. Every hour on the hour, sketch performances take place in each of the four
spaces of Stage 773. The festival averages a staggering 20 shows an evening, meaning more than 11,000 patrons attend this annual comedy oasis set amidst the heart of Chicago’s winter season. After each show, you’ll get a chance to chat with (or congratulate) the comedians, as the venue lobby tends to turn into a type of crowded reunion of old friends. Chicago’s comedy fraternity is just that tight. Stage 773, located at 1225 W. Belmont in Lakeview. 773-327-5252. Stage773.com
Mayor Rahm Emanuel, in coordination with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and the League of Chicago Theatres, declared 2019 to be the “Year of Chicago Theatre.” This year-long, citywide initiative puts a spotlight on Chicago’s vibrant theatre scene — including improv, dance, opera, puppetry and more — at hundreds of cultural venues, theaters and parks throughout the city. ’S INSIDER YOUR GUIDE TO CHICAGO
Explore the city
Pedway system:
Making January exploration possible Chicago’s architecture is legendary. Iconic, even. And what’s interesting is, you don’t have to be on the outside looking skyward to appreciate it all. Hidden beneath Chicago’s downtown streets is the Pedway. Used by tens of thousands of pedestrians per day, it’s a complex system of underground tunnels and overhead bridges that link more than 40 blocks, covering nearly five miles and connecting more than 50 public and private buildings, commuter rail lines and CTA stations. The Pedway is a convenient and efficient (not to mention safe) way to get around downtown — especially in January in Chicago, when the weather can be far from delightful. A magnificent way to utilize the Pedway system while learning plenty about the city’s vast history and architectural marvels is through the passionate folks at Chicago Detours. Their Loop Interior Architecture Walking Tour is far from just a Pedway tour. It’s an opportunity to step inside and follow a creative route through buildings and secret shortcuts to gain a new perspective on Chicago, using iPads along the way to appreciate historic photos, documentary video clips and maps. Beautiful lobbies, churches, department stores, Tiffany mosaics, historic sites and hidden corridors of landmark buildings sites — going inside (where 90 percent of the tour is) helps you fully experience Chicago architecture in all its January splendor. See more information on this and all Chicago Detours’ options at ChicagoDetours.com
INSTAGRAM-WORTHY SPOTS If ice is present on Lake Michigan, it can make for a spectacular photo opportunity of the skyline from Oak Street Beach or the Museum Campus Looking for a great spot to warm up? Swing by the Chicago Cultural Center and snap some eye-catching pics of the Tiffany stained-glass dome Make sure to go black-and-white for a sleek wintertime photo of one of Chicago’s iconic bridges (on Clark, LaSalle, Kinzie, etc.) downtown

SUE returns to the Field Museum Welcome back, SUE. Welcome back. The world’s largest, best-preserved and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex is back on display at the Field Museum and, as it turns out, what is widely considered to be the world’s greatest dinosaur fossil deserved its own private suite showcasing what SUE’s prehistoric world was like. SUE’s new resting place is located within the Field’s impressive Griffin Halls of Evolving Planet. Combined with the newly renovated Stanley Field Hall and Maximo the Titanosaur, these items make up the Griffin Dinosaur Experience. SUE’s suite, meanwhile, is larger than a basketball court and filled with revealing displays that show what all has been learned about life on Earth some 67 million years ago. Which, as it turns out, is a lot. “SUE’s skeleton has been a treasure trove for scientists,” says Jaap Hoogstraten, the Field’s director of exhibitions. “Studying it has shown us everything from how fast T. rex would have been able to run to how quickly a baby T. rex grew up.” Animations projected onto six different nine-foot screens behind SUE show her hunting, fighting, even pooping. The new gallery is something to behold, presenting SUE as imposing as ever. While it’s easy to spend the better part of the day with the Field’s dinosaurs, don’t forget to save time for the other 40 million artifacts and specimens in its vast collection. 1400 S. Lake Shore Dr. FieldMuseum.org
MEET MAXIMO, A TITANOSAUR The titanosaur Patagotitan mayorum is the largest dinosaur to ever grace the Earth. A long-necked, plant-eater, it lived more than 100 million years ago. Named Máximo, meaning “maximum” or “most” in Spanish, the Field’s titanosaur reaches 122 feet, stands 28 feet tall at the head and weighed about 70 tons — or as much as 10 African elephants. The Field’s titanosaur cast is based off the fossilized bones discovered on a farm in Argentina. Paleontologists excavated more than 130 fossils there from at least six different individual sauropods.

PIECE OF HISTORY
Just north of downtown is the Chicago History Museum in Old Town, where the Abraham Lincoln exhibit and its artifacts focus on his election in 1860, leadership in the face of the Civil War and the tragic end to his life. General admission is free for Illinois residents on Tuesday evenings. 1601 N. Clark. ChicagoHistory.org
The famed Chicago Art Institute is home to one of best, most expansive art collections anywhere in the world. One of the many iconic pieces of American art on display is Nighthawks (1942). One of the best-known paintings of the 20th century, it depicts an all-night diner with three customers lost in their thoughts. The artist, Edward Hopper, purposely eliminated any reference to an entrance, perhaps to make the subjects seem even more removed from both themselves and the world outside. 159 E. Monroe. Artic.edu
Bob Dylan: Electric The American Writers Museum, opened in 2017, celebrates the breadth of American writing through a number of engaging exhibits and programming. Experiencing an authentic U-505 German submarine that was captured in June of 1944 during WWII is thrilling enough at the Museum of Science and Industry. But if you want even more from the exhibit, take the optional on-board tour for an interactive stroll through a fascinatingly cramped piece of history to experience life aboard the mysterious sub. The tour lasts 25 minutes and includes a Q&A session at the end. The U-505 tour is not included in the museum’s general admission price and requires a separate, timed-entry ticket ($18 for adults and $14 for children ages 3-11). 5700 S. COFFEE CRAZE We’ve found five Chicago shops with not only great coffee, but a lot of character as well
Hero Coffee
Hero Coffee has a few locations around Chicago, but the Pickwick Alley location in the Loop is about as adorable and Pinterest-able as they come. Strings of lights and a large “COFFEE” sign welcome coffee lovers into the cobblestone alley where this little shop is snuggly located. It is an incredibly tiny space with no seating, but just enough room inside to wait and order. 22 E. Jackson. Hero-Coffee.com
Sawada
Attached to Green Street Smoked Meats in the West Loop, Sawada has all the rustic, exposed brick and hanging-light feels of its popular neighbor. The atmosphere doesn’t get much cooler than Sawada, but overlooking the restaurant can get a bit loud if you are looking to read or engage in a meaningful conversation. Sawada is perfect to grab coffee before brunch in the West Loop, play some pinball or enjoy a cup of joe and people watch. 112 N. Green. SawadaCoffee.com
Star lounge
Star Lounge in the hip West Town neighborhood is a bright and warm spot buzzing with energy and fun music. You can tell it was once a tavern; it is long and narrow with gold-colored walls, bar seating, small tables and a back patio. The staff is especially cheery and welcoming. They serve Dark Matter

Coffee (a Chicago favorite) and have a creative selection of craft lattes. The Wake and Bake, which is one of their most popular drinks, has pepper and maple syrup — delicious and wellbalanced. 2521 W. Chicago
Bourgeois Pig
This is a Chicago coffee house staple. Located in an old house in the heart of trendy Lincoln Park, the Bourgeois Pig has two separate, adjacent cafes and an outdoor courtyard. They are known for their sandwiches, and as such, one room has more of a deli/Potbelly feel. The other room feels much more like a coffee house, including a fireplace with a portrait hanging above, and chairs snuggly situated around it. They boast a large loose-tea selection if you’re so inclined. 736 W. Fullerton .
C.C. Ferns
With vintage furniture (gold velour couches), artfully placed books and games, rustic wood paneling and mirror ceiling tiles, this Humboldt Park favorite has mastered the idea of shabby chic. The quiet and chill atmosphere makes this a perfect place to lose yourself in thought, or maybe even write some poetry. The Chai tea latte comes highly recommended. Note: C.C. is on the smaller side with limited seating. It is also attached to California Clipper, a fantastic speakeasy-style bar with live music and strong cocktails. 2806 W. Augusta. CCFerns.com

Oak Street: Chicago’s approachable Rodeo Drive
“You have to have a product people want, and you have to deliver an experience,” says Stan Razny, owner of Razny Jewelers (109 E. Oak) when asked to describe what sets Chicago’s lavish Oak Street District apart from New York’s famed 5th Avenue or California’s Rodeo Drive. Located just steps from Michigan Avenue in the prestigious Gold Coast, the Oak Street District draws in millions of visitors each year with an expansive list of sought-after boutiques, designers and businesses. Part of that “experience” involves a sense of Midwestern values, which translates into stores that, while high-end, still remain approachable. In other words, a warm greeting at the door instead of judgments. “If you go into a lot of affluent boutiques around the country, no one greets you for five minutes, if at all,” Razny adds. “No acknowledgement, and you’re just left floundering in the store.” Razny says his staff, like others in the Oak Street District (which includes Oak, Walton and Rush Streets and national brands like Barneys New York, Prada and Christian Dior), aims to provide a personal touch to go with the luxury items for sale — in his case, Patek Philippe and Rolex watches and a well-curated collection of designer jewelry. “People can buy this product anywhere,” Razny admits. “Now it’s up to us to deliver that experience and deliver it to them in a style that shows we care about them and builds a relationship. A relationship with us and a relationship with the brand.” For more information on the Oak Street District, visit OakStreetChicago.com

Maple & Ash — This Gold Coast restaurant is not only super swanky, but also the food and service are spectacular! They make things extra special and bring out fun appetizers, sides and even desserts to share. They really know how to treat their customers well and always greet you with the season’s signature cocktail in the cutest mini martini glass. Some of my favorite dishes from the menu include the roasted beet salad, meatballs, classic steak frites, agnolotti pasta and, for dessert, their sundae service, which is super fun for groups and celebrations. 8 W. RL — The decor of this Gold Coast spot is exactly how I want my living room to look one day: cozy plush chairs, gallery walls and a casual elegance. A girl can dream, right? I love the Ralph Lauren clothing brand, so of course I would love the restaurant too! The menu has a lot of amazing classic food including their escargot, avocado &

Katana — This L.A. import is a newbie to the Chicago scene. I love sushi, and currently Katana in River North is my favorite. I love the vibe of this restaurant, and they have a fun outdoor area as well. The food is great too, and my favorites include truffled edamame, popcorn rock shrimp tempura, any of the skewers from the robata grill and any of their sushi rolls. 339 N. Dearborn. 312-877-5544. Swift & Sons — The ambiance is always fun at this West Loop hotspot, and the room is beautiful! My husband and I like going here for special occasions because it is a bit on the pricey side compared to my other selections, but I promise you that you won’t be disappointed. Besides their amazing steaks, I also love the crispy rock shrimp, S&S onion soup, beef wellington (expensive, but meant for two) and the crispy fingerling potatoes. 1000 W. Warm up and grab a bite 1 Eleven City Diner is considered, by the ownership, to be “a hybrid of sincere respect for what family dining rooms used to be.” The old-school diner and delicatessen knows a thing or two about what putting a plateful of scrumptious, ribsticking food in front of you on a cold January afternoon can do for the soul. Classic deli sandwiches stacked tall, decadent burgers and melts and loaded breakfast favorites. Duck in out of the cold, and you may never leave. 1112 S. Wabash St. 312-212-1112. ElevenCityDiner.com
2 Traditional Thai décor at Dao sets the mood for a delicious family feast of pad Thai, Lard Nar and spicy beef curry. What better way to warm up this January than to add a little spice to your menu choice? Dao represents a charming, quick spot if you’re looking for a hot Thai meal in between sightseeing or shopping. 230 E. Ohio. 312337-0000. DaoThai.com
3 If you’re in the mood for an old-school neighborhood supper club to cure the January chill, look no further than Club Lucky. Tucked away in the popular tree-lined Bucktown neighborhood just north of downtown, they’re known for family-style Italian specialties and award-winning martinis. The homemade tortellini filled with chicken and herbs in a rich vodka sauce is delightful. 1824 W. Wabansia.

BUDDY
IS BACK The 82-year-old blues legend takes up annual month-long residency at Legends
In Chicago, we know a thing or two about legendary figures. Al Capone, Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, Buddy Guy. It may be difficult to catch the first three in Chicago this January, but the latter, well, he’s taking a break from his tour schedule to once again settle in for his annual month-long stand at his namesake blues bar, Buddy Guy’s Legends. Long celebrated as both a blues and rock music inspiration (and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee), Guy is also renowned for his showmanship — it’s not uncommon to see him play the guitar with drumsticks, upside down or while walking through the audience. Along with the Blues Festival in Grant Park each June, this extended winter residency is one of the top highlights on the city’s blues
