Explore the city
Spring colors abound 1 Chicago likes its greenery. You have to when you suffer through the winters we do. Which is why, as soon as the weather breaks in March and April, it doesn’t take long for Chicagoans to get outside to enjoy the city’s 570 parks and more nature preserves and trails than we can count. Here are a few spots to appreciate spring in full bloom around Chicago.
Michigan Avenue
Hoping for an ideal photo op for that Instagram account? Look no further than the Magnificent Mile, as the colorful tulips and other flowers and plants abound along the sidewalks and medians of this shopper’s paradise.
2 Lurie Garden
There simply is nothing like a leisurely stroll through this beautiful 3.5-acre garden in Millennium Park, which has a way of making you feel completely removed from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis that lies just steps away. Take time to appreciate the gardens of flower beds and tall hedges, boardwalks over pools of water, numerous birds and majestic views of the skyline — and take your lunch to enjoy on a bench. LurieGarden.org
Alfred Caldwell Lily Pond
3 Milton L. Olive III Park
The name may not exactly roll off the tongue, but thousands of locals and tourists traverse through it each day on the way between Streeterville, Oak Street Beach and Navy Pier. Offering unobstructed views of the lake and high-rise condos along Lake Shore Drive, along with a relaxing walking path and tall trees, this small park commemorates the first African American to receive the Medal of Honor. 500 N. Lake Shore Dr.
Designed by Alfred Caldwell in 1936, this little secret spot, located just outside the large (and free) Lincoln Park Zoo, is quite enchanting with its peaceful pools, cascading waterfall, native plants, steppingstone paths and architecturally significant pavilion. It is so revered, in fact, it was named a National Historic Landmark. 125 W. Fullerton in Lincoln Park.

Navy Pier: It’s all here
If you’re looking for a place to entertain the kids for an entire day, one venue immediately comes to mind: Navy Pier. As the most popular tourist attraction in the entire Midwest, Navy Pier offers 50 acres of unparalleled attractions, restaurants and family-friendly opportunities. Not only is it the docking port for many of the boat cruises in Chicago, but it’s also home to the impressive Chicago Children’s Museum, which can take up a day by itself with all its fun, interactive exhibits. You’ll also find the Amazing Chicago’s Funhouse Maze, an IMAX Theatre, the beautiful Crystal Gardens and the new 200,000 square-foot cultural family pavilion loaded with restaurants and shopping. 600 E. Grand. NavyPier.org
Kids’ Corner The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum is loaded with enriching exhibits and opportunities — like the daily “critter connection” from 12-12:15 p.m. — for hands-on interactions with a variety of animals. The Notebaert’s newest exhibit is TreeHouses, where guests can set foot in an indoor tree house and discover the many habitats that trees provide for all kinds of species, all while investigating a fun forest experience. Make sure to save time for a stroll through the magical Butterfly Haven too. 2430 N. Cannon Dr. NatureMuseum.org
Safehouse, the spy-themed subterranean restaurant in River North, has plenty to entertain the child in all of us. The sizable kids’ menu is a great starting point, but plenty of games, secret passageways, recon missions and interactive displays only add to the allure. Insider’s tip: The burger is one of the best in the city. Cool desserts for the kids too. 60 E. Ontario. SafehouseChicago.com
IMPROVISED STORY TIME Using suggestions and ideas from children in the audience (who also help design the setting and props), Storytown’s actors, artists and musicians will bring a story to life, taking you and your family on an interactive, improvised adventure starring everything from dinosaurs and superheroes to princesses and fish. Launching April 8 is the new exhibit, Silverscreen to Mainstream: American Fashion in the 1930s and ‘40s, which showcases various fashions from Paris, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles and how the glitz and glamour of Hollywood was able to reach all classes in the 1930s and ‘40s despite it being a tumultuous time in American history. 1601 N. Chicago’s world-renowned Museum of Science and Industry offers a plethora of vibrant learning opportunities about spacewalks, the science of storms and German submarines from WWII. Now through May 23 in the Giant Dome Theater, catch the film Cuba, a powerful story of a nation’s vibrant culture, unspoiled ecosystems, rich history and diligently maintained colonial architecture. Hold on tight, as you’ll be transported through the music and dance scene of Havana to underwater reefs, baseball games and spectacular island landscapes. Showing daily at 10:30 a.m., noon, 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. This film is not included in museum entry and requires an additional ticket. 5700 S. Lake Shore Dr. MSIChicago.org
Scoping out the universe The Adler Planetarium, with its interactive exhibits and historical and scientific knowledge, is a great way to spend a day. One particularly enthralling exhibit is The Universe: A Walk Through Space and Time, where guests can witness how stars, planets, galaxies and all the atoms in their bodies were created and understand how the universe has evolved over some 13.7 billion years of existence. And, with some of the world’s most advanced telescopes, you can inspect the most beautifully diverse objects from our Solar System and beyond. 1300 S. Lake Shore. AdlerPlanetarium.org

The Shedd Aquarium offers upclose, unforgettable encounters with 32,000 animals from aquatic environments around the world, including the stunning temporary exhibit Underwater Beauty. The highlight of any visit usually involves taking in one of the aquatic presentations in the oceanarium — where beluga whales, sea lions and dolphins serve as the stars of the show. 1200 S. Lake Shore Dr. SheddAquarium.org
The famed Chicago Art Institute is home to one of best, most expansive art collections anywhere in the world. New to the museum and available for a limited time is the Rembrandt Portraits exhibit, on display through June 3. Two portraits by Rembrandt van Rijn, Portrait of a Boy and Self-Portrait, are on loan from the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, California. They join the Art Institute’s own Old Man with a Gold Chain and Young Woman at an Open Half-Door for a dramatic look at Rembrandt’s approach to portraiture, as he complicated the genre with his use of props, lighting, costumes and indistinct settings. Local denim and deals
The folks behind the rapidly expanding Dearborn Denim set out with a simple premise: to build a better apparel brand. The thinking was that “people deserve access to a great product, made the right way, and sold at a great price.” Easier said than done, typically, but they’ve cornered the market locally with two brick-and-mortar stores in the city, as well as a huge online presence. Everything is made in house, sewn and manufactured in their Chicago factory, using only American materials. Particularly appealing is their stretch denim line, made from long staple West Texas cotton and loomed in the most technologically advanced denim mill in the country. But it doesn’t stop with just a good pair of jeans, as you can also find an assortment of handmade leather belts and soft t-shirts made from a type of cotton that actually increases in comfort and flattering characteristics throughout the aging process. And don’t forget free custom hems at the stores, where they carry products from other local brands as well. Dearborn Denim has two Chicago locations — in Hyde Park at 1504 E. 53rd Street and in Andersonville at 5202 N. Clark. DearbornDenim.us Chicago’s three downtown Nordstrom Rack stores carry name-brand merchandise (handbags, jewelry, cosmetics, fragrances, shoes, accessories and fine apparel for the whole family) from Nordstrom stores at up to 70 percent off original prices without sacrificing selection or style. 101 E. Tasting menu trend A quick guide to a few of Chicago’s more popular restaurants with exclusive tasting menus
Alinea
This Lincoln Park hotspot, headed up by renowned chef Grant Achatz, is widely regarded as one of the best restaurants in the world. And it is far your normal dining experience — at least in the conventional sense. Part science project, part visual spectacle, part taste bud explosion rolled into one night, neither the theatrics nor the creative plates will let you down. Expect a single, seasonally driven tasting menu of between 18-22 courses. Reservations recommended. 1723 N. Halsted. 312-867-0110. AlineaRestaurant.com
Schwa
Located on the edge of the trendy Wicker Park neighborhood, the intimate Schwa takes aim at eliminating the barrier between patron and chef and fully engaging the senses in more ways than you can creatively imagine. Chef Michael Carlson works with global, seasonal ingredients to create a vivid 11-course tasting menu. Expect an eccentric atmosphere with a wide range of loud music and chefs/ servers who end up feeling more like friends at the end of the night. And bonus: It’s BYOB. 1466 N. Ashland. 773-2521466. Chicago’s signature dishes Eduardo’s Enoteca
Labriola Cafe and Ristorante
Blending Italian traditions with an innovative dining experience, Labriola has rapidly established itself as a reliable go-to spot on Michigan Avenue. Whether you’re in the mood for salads, soups, sandwiches, Neopolitan pizza, hearty pasta options or other upscale Italian specialties, it’s all here. Signature dish: One of their signature artisan pizzas, which feature San Marzano tomatoes from the volcanic plains to the south of Mount Vesuvius (no kidding) or the chicken vesuvio with fresh peas, roasted potatoes, white wine and a roasted garlic sauce. 535 N. Michigan. 312-955-3100. LaBriolaCafe.com
Lagunitas Brewery and Taproom
BACON-WRAPPED FILET
Signature dish: Sometimes, simple is best. And Lagunitas is on to something with their diner burger, which is seared on a flat-top grill and served with caramelized onions, American cheese and pickles on a brioche bun. We suggest adding bacon and a fried egg. Perfection personified, especially when paired with one of their tasty craft beers. 2607 W. 17th. Lagunitas.com

A neighborhood wine bar just steps from the popular Gold Coast nightlife district, Eduardo’s Enoteca offers up some authentic light Italian dishes that are perfect for sharing, and the stylish atmosphere, rustic wood interior and tree-laden sidewalk patio add to the experience. Signature dish: Eduardo’s outstanding brunch offers up specialties like the baked Romagna omelette with potato, gorgonzola, spicy Italian sausage and rosemary. Start the day off the right way with their house mimosa (prosecco, Solerno blood orange liqueur, Aperol and fresh-squeezed OJ) or a bloody mary. 1212 N. Dearborn. 312-3374490. EduardosEnoteca.com
Stan’s Donuts Delight your sweet tooth at one of Stan’s eight Chicago locations. Signature dish: The maple caramel bacon pecan bar is as tasty as it sounds. 259 E. Erie, 535 N. Michigan, 1301 W. Lake, 181 N. Michigan and more. StansDonutsChicago.com
There’s just something beautiful about an endless parade of flame-grilled meats arriving at your platte. Texas de Brazil’s assortment of seasoned beef, lamb, pork, chicken and Brazilian sausage cooked over a wood charcoal grill, then skewered and served tableside the festive “churrasco way” is a sight to behold. Don’t overlook the stellar salad bar and tempting lobster bisque. Signature dish: The lamb chops and parmesan-crusted pork loin are fantastic, but you’ll really want to make friends with the server who’s in charge of the tender bacon-wrapped filet mignon. 210 E. Upper Illinois. 312-595-0913. TexasDeBrazil.com
