THE CHER SHOW Ten years in the making, the new pre-Broadway musical on the life of the one and only Cher calls Chicago home through July 15 A new musical using Cher’s songs to tell her epic story — six decades in and still going strong — is heading for Broadway, but not before a five-week stop in Chicago. As a driving force who has dominated popular culture by pushing boundaries, breaking down barriers and letting nothing stand in her way, Cher herself is still in awe that her life story is finally coming to the big stage after 10 years of planning, calling the process “exciting and scary.” The musical has a unique approach, being
structured like a variety show, similar to The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour from the 1970s, and featuring 35 of her hit songs, three different actresses playing different portions of her life and plenty of sequins-filled costumes created by Bob Mackie, her original designer. This unabashedly fabulous new musical on the life of one of the world’s biggest icons runs through July 15 at the Oriental Theatre. 24 W. Randolph. 800-775-2000. BroadwayInChicago.com
Across the street from the Oriental Theatre, The Dearborn is a welcoming spot for a pre-show dinner or a drink after the curtain closes. Executive chef Aaron Cuschieri, a former “Top Chef” contestant, has a delightful menu of upscale pub fare. 145 N. Dearborn. 312-384-1242. TheDearbornTavern.com Get the app keychicago

EXPLORE
Let the 606 trail connect you Chicago is no stranger to innovative parks and world-class public spaces, which is why when the city (with the help of neighborhood groups, the Chicago Park District, various civic organizations, etc.) took on the task of turning a declining Bloomingdale train line into a walking, jogging and biking trail, park and event spaces in an effort to provide three miles of green space and connect four neighborhoods, Chicagoans couldn’t wait for it to be finished. The 606 serves some 80,000 neighbors, including 20,000 kids, who live within a 10-minute walk of the trail, and has become a popular attraction and tourist destination. The 606 park and trail network is on the city’s northwest side, running along Bloomingdale Avenue from Ashland on the east to Ridgeway on the west, connecting four ethnically diverse neighborhoods of Wicker Park, Bucktown, Logan Square and Humboldt Park. In other words, if you plan it out, you could eat, shop and explore your way through a good chunk of Chicago using one thoroughfare — and get some exercise along the way. Grab a bite to eat at Revolution Brewpub and Longman & Eagle nearby, or shop in the trendy Wicker Park area (see page 39 for a few ideas). Don’t forget to check out various events sponsored by the 606, like fun runs, block parties, star-gazing nights and more. The606.org

INSIDER PROFILE
The volunteer docents that lead the Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise aboard Chicago’s First Lady really make our tours the No. 1 attraction on the river. Our customers can tell that the docents are passionate about Chicago and its rich architectural history. There’s a difference between working a job versus a passion for what you do, and being volunteers, you know you are getting the best tour available by people who want to provide you the best experience possible. I think most people are surprised at the vast beauty of the Chicago skyline from the lake. Mercury, Chicago’s Skyline Cruiseline (see the ad on page 23 for $10 off), provides magnificent views both day and night from Lake Michigan. There’s something about seeing this magnificent city from the water that really changes the perspective of what Chicago really is. — Gabriel Argumedo

Captain Gabriel Argumedo began working with Mercury, Chicago’s Skyline Cruiseline, and Chicago’s First Lady cruises when he was just 15 years and began piloting at 19. In addition to piloting the vessels, he serves as the director of vessel operations. Visit Architecture.org and MercuryCruises.com for more information on both cruises.

Favorite Chicago historical fact from one of your tours: At 28 miles long, the completion of the sanitary and ship canal, which reversed the flow of the Chicago River, moved more earth than the Panama Canal. It also served as training for engineers to later work on the Panama Canal. Favorite piece of architecture along the river: The Harry Weese River Cottage located at the Kinzie Street Bridge on the north branch of the river. Weese saw the value in riverfront property at a time that the river was looked at as more of an eyesore than an amenity. He had the foresight to place four unique, sailinginspired cottages along the river that have only been on the market once since they were built in the late 1980s for $2.3 million. Describe what the river means to Chicago: Everything. Early settlers saw the potential for Chicago to become a great shipping port connecting the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River and down to the Gulf of Mexico. Today, Chicagoans see the river as the hot spot for tourists to learn about Chicago’s history and a place to bring family and friends to see what the city has to offer. Best spot on the Riverwalk: I enjoy sitting along the River Theatre section of the Riverwalk. It’s a nice place to sit and relax while you watch the river traffic cruise by.

For a stroll through musical history, take in the Chicago History Museum’s newest exhibition, Amplified: Chicago Blues. Chicago has been a “sweet home” for the blues since African American migrants brought it here, where it was electrified, amplified, recorded and eventually shared around the world. “Blues music helped southern black migrants forge connections and transform an unfamiliar, often inhospitable city into a new home,” explains Joy Bivins, director of curatorial affairs at the museum. “The Chicago blues sound, rooted in the past, reflected the realities of a new life that was taking shape in the Midwest.” At the foundation of the exhibit is the photography of local record distributor Raeburn Flerlage, as well as a number of interactive opportunities that allow visitors to belt out one of the classics in a realistic club setting, write and sing their own songs, design an album cover and even strum a few notes. General admission is free for Illinois residents on Tuesday evenings. The Chicago History Museum is located at 1601 N. Clark in Old Town. 312-642-4600. ChicagoHistory.org

Intriguing exhibits 2 Head to the Chicago’s famed Art Institute to see the world’s largest collection of works by Chicago native Ivan Albright (1897–1983), considered a “master of the macabre” who rose to fame for his richly detailed paintings of ghoulish subjects. THE HIGHLIGHTS 1
The immensely popular Cloud Gate, or more commonly referred to by locals as “the Bean,” is the work of British sculptor Anish Kapoor, who used 110 tons of polished stainless steel plates to reflect the Windy City’s iconic skyline and clouds above. With a 12-foot arch, the Bean beckons visitors to step inside the concave chamber to see distorted reflections of themselves and snap a few photos.
2
The Jay Pritzker Pavilion, arguably the most sophisticated outdoor concert venue of its kind in the country, plays home to a variety of concerts and events throughout the year. The modern amphitheatre holds 11,000 people, but the Great Lawn is as relaxing a setting as you’ll find to take in the sounds. JayPritzkerPavilion.com

The interactive Crown Fountain near Michigan Avenue is constructed of a pair of 50-foot glass block towers at each end of a reflecting pool. What makes that the towers project video images of Chicago citizens.

Shelves overflowing with used books, reading tables overlooking Milwaukee Avenue, cashiers with long beards and glasses — what more can you want in a bookstore? Browsing through Myopic Books (1564 N. Milwaukee, MyopicBookstore.com) is like wandering through the home of the most intellectually curious hoarder in the world. Prices are often unreal, and their collection is incredibly varied, as classics, contemporary works and obscure rarities can be found tucked throughout this old wooden sanctuary. ... Ragstock (1459 N. Milwaukee, Ragstock.com) has great vintage clothing — racks of ’80s sweaters, ’90s jackets, flannels, vintage suspenders and nylon pants dot the store’s upstairs area. Even more contemporary trends, like denim overalls, are well represented too. Head downstairs, and you’ll find great themed clothing for parties and costumes.
