THE COLOR PURPLE IS BACK The classic, Tony Award-winning musical calls Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre home through July 29 Fresh off a successful run on Broadway, The Color Purple — the 2016 Tony Award winner for Best Musical Revival — is back in Chicago to begin its first U.S. tour. And the critics are raving about this captivating retelling of the epic, Pulitzer Prize-winning story about a young woman’s heartwarming path to find love and a better life despite facing a wealth of hardships in the deep South in the early 1900s. Called “a ravishly reconceived production”

and “a glory to behold” by the New York Times and a “direct hit to the heart” by the Hollywood Reporter, you’ll be blown away by the uplifting score consisting of gospel, jazz, blues and ragtime music. One of the most acclaimed book-to-filmto-stage productions of all time, this stunning American classic is not to be missed. The Auditorium Theatre is located at 50 E. Congress. Visit BroadwayInChicago.com for ticket information.

Get out and see the city It’s July, the middle of summer in one of the best summer cities anywhere in the world. This means it’s time to enjoy the sunshine and get out to explore the far reaches of Chicago. While Chicago is a very walkable city, you can cover a lot more ground by bike, whether it’s using the reliable Divvy bike-sharing system or renting from a company like Bobby’s Bike Hike (BobbysBikeHike.com) or Bike and Roll (BikeChicago.com). However you acquire your wheels, make sure to take advantage of our lakefront trail, which stretches a convenient 18 miles, hitting many key summer attractions like the Museum Campus, Buckingham Fountain, Navy Pier and Oak Street and North Avenue Beaches. If you desire to get out of downtown and conquer some of the city’s fun, diverse neighborhoods, check out the 606 trail that connects Wicker Park, Bucktown, Logan Square and Humboldt Park.

INSTAGRAM-WORTHY SPOTS The Lurie Garden in Millennium Park is like a quiet sanctuary in the heart of the city, with splendid views of the lake, skyline and Michigan Avenue. If you’re in the mood to bike, run or walk a bit, head up to Belmont Harbor for a beautiful shot through the sailboats south to downtown. One of the more iconic buildings in the city is the Chicago Theatre, and its eye-catching marquee on State Street is a popular place for a selfie or two. Get the app keychicago

Island oasis

The city of Chicago knows how to host visitors from all over the globe. More than 50 million annually, to be exact. But that doesn’t mean that, on occasion, you don’t need a vacation from your vacation. So how about a tropical oasis right in the middle of the city — with live music and a distinctive Caribbean/Polynesian vibe — to remind you that you’re actually on vacation? With Island Party Hut, you can even hop on a floating tiki bar to take the fun out onto the water. 355 E. Riverwalk. 312-600-0488. IslandPartyHut.com

Wherever you go to grab a bite or a drink along the Riverwalk, watching the parade of boats and people passing by as the city sounds disappear is intoxicating in itself. City Winery, already with a popular, sprawling restaurant and bar in the West Loop, added a second location along the Riverwalk (11 W. Riverwalk South), providing locally made wine served through a unique tapping system. Craft beer afficianados were pleased to see the additions of the Chicago Brewhouse (31-35 E. Riverwalk South) and The Northman (233 E. Riverwalk), a local hotspot for ciders, this year. Tiny Tapp (55 W. Riverwalk South) has a great signature craft cocktail concept and tasty sandwiches, while the Tiny Café next door features locally roasted coffee, fresh-baked pastries and ice cream. O’Brien’s, a longtime staple in Old Town, serves up American pub fare and a nice selection of beer, wine and cocktails (45 E. Riverwalk South). For a cold treat, swing by Frost Gelato to enjoy a rotation of handcrafted flavors served from an oldfashioned gelato cart.

New exhibits in town In late June, the Museum of Contemporary Art launched the exhibition I Was Raised on the Internet, which examines the influence of gaming and entertainment — as well as smart phones and social media — and how the internet has dramatically changed the way we approach everyday life. In celebration of the Field Museum’s 125th anniversary, Stanley Field Hall underwent a dramatic transformation this spring and summer that includes the acclaimed addition of Máximo, a skeletal cast of Patagotitan mayorum that spans some 122 feet from head to tail, as well as a flock of flying pterosaurs (and their 35-feet wingspans). These items, as well as Sue the T-Rex’s new gallery and the new exhibit Antarctic Dinosaurs, are collectively known as the Griffin Dinosaur Experience. Antarctic Dinosaurs reveals the lost world of Antarctica, when this now barren continent was home to a plethora of creatures 200 million years ago. Gone farming

INSIDER PROFILE

The Farm-in-the-Zoo section at the Lincon Park Zoo is the perfect spot if you don’t have the time (or patience) to hit the entire zoo. “Mr. Singer” plays music and has a sing-along on Wednesdays and Fridays at 9:15 and 10 a.m. Watch the cows get milked, pick strawberries and vegetables, climb on the tractors, see baby chicks hatch. Kids can even help in the edible garden — my boys love grabbing the rakes and shovels to work and fix things. It’s so interactive, and the volunteers are great. They’ll even send you home with plants or food from the garden. If you’re limited on time and want to be in and out in an hour or so, but still give them “the animal carnival,” as my son calls it, it’s ideal. 2001 N. Clark. LPZoo.com After the farm (or the zoo), you can walk across the street and enjoy the Green City Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Listen to musicians, snag some healthy food and snacks, and sit on the grass.

We’re members at the Chicago Children’s Museum on Navy Pier because my boys get so much out of it. Between the fire truck exhibit, sending boats down rivers or digging for dinosaur bones, you have it all. And every few months they switch out a few exhibits to keep things fresh and entertaining. You can pack a lunch and eat in the atrium inside Navy Pier or check out the boats and Ferris wheel outside to make it a complete day. ChicagoChildrensMuseum.org

2

Love the Garfield Park Conservatory. At this stage, we’re looking to go places where our boys can run around and explore without big, annoying crowds. Garfield is much bigger than the Lincoln Park Conservatory. Admission is donation-based, and they always have family programming and lots of hands-on experiences. 300 N. Central Park Ave. GarfieldParkConservatory.org

3

The Museum of Science and Industry is the kind of place you can get lost in for an entire day. My boys love the train exhibit, and in the basement they have a waterworks playground, tractors and more. Lots of learning to be had here, no matter what age. 5700 S. Lake Shore. MSIChicago.org

4

A few times per summer, we have to make it down to Millennium Park for movies in the park, free concerts and more. Our kids enjoy running through the fountains, looking at themselves in the bean and getting to Maggie Daley Park early to hit the playground. MillenniumPark.org

Normal programming includes Wiggleworms music at 10 a.m., a reading circle with Lookingglass Theater and Barrel of Monkeys at 11 a.m. and various performing arts at 1 p.m. Activity Zone partners include everything from the Hyde Park Arts Center to the Oriental Institute and Chicago Master Gardeners. 201 E. Looking for a break from the July heat? Here are a few fun stops to make to cool off Nothing says Chicago — or represents the famous skyline — like the Willis Tower, and The Skydeck is a major year-round draw. Enjoy views from the 103rd floor, a staggering 1,353 feet up in the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. So high, in fact, that you can see four different states on a clear day. Interactive kiosks and educational exhibits — as well as a bunch of kid-specific activities, including fact sheets, quizzes, scavenger hunts, etc. — add to the experience. So does the thrill of venturing out on “The Ledge,” where large glass bays extend out four feet from the Skydeck to provide a truly unique (and incredible) view of the city. 233 S. Wacker Dr., with the Skydeck entrance on Franklin. TheSkydeck.com 25 Degrees may be best known for their premium burgers, but this summer, you’d be wise to swing in for a spiked shake. Or, if that’s not your ticket, they also have spiked sodas and adult floats. We recommend the Nola shake, inspired by New Orleans and filled

with Southern Comfort, praline liqueur and buttered pecans. 736 N. Clark. 25DegreesChi.com Snow Dragon Shavery is a tasty treat on Navy Pier and in Lincoln Park. Choose from a variety of exotic flavors, they pop a disk of snow into the shaver, and voila, shaved snow. Then, top it with a variety of fruit, candies and sprinkles. You can also enjoy coconut water in real coconuts, macarons and frozen yogurt. 2618 N. Clark and 700 E. Grand on Navy Pier. SnowDragonShavery.com

Downtown fun Located in the heart of downtown between Michigan Avenue and Lake Shore Drive, Millennium Park has become a proud type of town square for the city of Chicago, offering a multitude of options for en. This 24-acre space is an award-winning center for art, music, architecture and landscape design. The centerpiece of Millennium Park is the Instagram-favorite Cloud Gate, more commonly referred to by locals as “the Bean.” This structure is the work of British sculptor Anish Kapoor, who used 110 tons of polished stainless steel plates to reflect the Windy City’s famous skyline. Step inside the concave chamber to see distorted reflections of yourself, and then outside for a family photo you won’t regret. For a full schedule of events and things to see, visit MillenniumPark.org

MUST-DO LIST

The interactive Crown Fountain, located just steps from Michigan Avenue, is made up of a long reflective pool with a pair of 50-foot glass block towers that project video images of Chicago residents at each end. July means plenty of kids (and adults) splashing in its water to cool off. The Pritzker Pavilion is widely considered the most sophisticated outdoor concert venue of its kind in the U.S. It’s home to Chicago’s Summer Film Series, Summer Music Series and a host of events throughout the year. Light bites for summer Chicago is a city with a food reputation founded on ribs. On deep-dish pizza. On steaks. But it’s July, and it’s hot outside, and you’ve got things to do while visiting this summer. You don’t necessarily want to be bogged down by the after-effects of a big, rib-sticking meal. In other words, while we’d never advise you not to order one of our staple dishes, it’s OK to side with some lighter, healthier options. With this in mind, here’s a breakdown of how to follow that plan at some of Chicago’s top establishments.

Eduardo’s Enoteca

A new neighborhood wine bar just steps from the popular Gold Coast nightlife district, Eduardo’s specializes authentic, light Italian dishes that are perfect for sharing — and perfect for summer. Ask for a table on the tree-laden sidewalk patio to add to the experience. 1212 N. Dearborn. 312-337-4490. EduardosEnoteca.com

Eleven City Diner

This classic, old-school diner and delicatessen may specialize in hearty breakfasts, stacked

sandwiches and frosty shakes, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go with something that doesn’t eclipse your calorie intake for the day. “The Leo” is a great way to start the morning with lox, eggs and onions on a toasted wheat bagel. Get some nourishment from a protein scramble with egg whites, chicken, broccoli, mushrooms and scallions, or indulge in the smoked Scottish salmon platter, which consists of a bagel topped with fresh smoked salmon, capers, tomato, onion, cucumber and olives. 1112 S. Over the last 12 years, Nepal House has earned a stellar reputation for its traditional Nepali and Indian cuisine. Light bites for summer Gino’s East, the iconic pizza legend, needs no introduction, and we wouldn’t blame you for a second if you couldn’t avoid devouring one of their deep-dish pies. You are visiting Chicago, after all. But lighter menu options exist. Appetizers like Brussels sprouts with pancetta and garlic or homemade hummus dressed up with kalamata olives, carrot sticks, cucumber slices and cherry tomatoes to go with warm pita bread will get you started. Another healthy menu favorite is Gino’s harvest salad, consisting of fresh spinach, field greens, dried cranberries, candied walnuts, crumbled blue cheese, shaved Brussels sprouts, green apple and raspberry vinaigrette. Gino’s East has four Chicago locations at 500 N. LaSalle, 162 E. Superior, 521 S. Dearborn and 2801 N. Lincoln. GinosEast.com Conveniently located on Wacker Drive near Michigan Avenue, Catch 35 is a seafood staple in Chicago, not to mention a worthwhile stop for happy hour if you’re in search of solid deals on food and drink. Order up some oysters on the half shell or spicy roasted octopus instead of the typical fried appetizer. Choosing between the spicy Asian tuna with avocado, radish, chili aioli, seaweed salad and scallions or the seared togarashi yellowfin tuna salad, which mixes greens, toasted almonds, orange, fennel, tomatoes, avocado and crispy won tons before topping it all with a sweet citrus vinaigrette is the way to go. Still further north (but easily accessible) is a hidden gem for locals — The Dock at Montrose Harbor (200 W. Montrose; TheDockAtMontroseBeach.com), where you can rock out to a concert by local artists and enjoy a great beer and drink selection and casual fare while watching families frolic in the water along one of Chicago’s largest neighborhood beaches.
