CHICAGO: THE CENTER OF THE MUSIC WORLD For four lively days, this statement is accurate, as Lollapalooza takes over Grant Park Aug. 2-5 Chicago has always been a city closely tied to music, no matter what the genre, and that statement couldn’t be truer than this weekend. Launched in 1991, Lollapalooza is one of the most popular music festivals in the world, growing to include more than 170 bands from around the world gracing eight different stages. Headliners this year include Bruno Mars, The Weeknd, Jack White, Arctic Monkeys and Vampire Weekend. Here are a few tips to endure a grueling, and exhilarating, four days of music madness. Drink water, save beer: You’ve seen the t-shirt, but the slogan fits in August. Buy one
bottled water early and then snag your refills at the public drinking fountains. Avoid the stage: Unless you’re 16 and have boundless energy, find a nice distance from the stage to avoid crowded heat boxes. The sound is good, if not better, further from the stage. Eat Elliot: A few years back, festival organizers tapped local celebrity chef Graham Elliott to curate the food scene, and this was a major score, as the offerings — from 35 of Chicago’s most popular restaurants — are not your typical carnival/street fest fare. Visit Lollapalooza.com for more info.
If you can’t make it to Grant Park, or if you aren’t done partying just yet, after shows at dozens of venues around the city are a great late-night option to catch your favorite band or discover some new artists. Check out Lollapalooza.com for the latest schedules. Get the app keychicago

Subtle
gestures are often the most impactful. Every lover enjoys occasional grandiosity, but sincerity is found in the quiet moments; a kiss on the forehead, a mid-day text, a stolen glance in a crowded room. This truth applies both to love as well as fashion. What we wear allows us to transform our entire persona for an event or season. Still, who we are really, our inner person, shines brightest under the light of simplicity; a little black dress, elongating nude pumps, or a universally classic earring. There’s no need to overthink the latter — when in doubt, go with the studs!
STUDS FROM YOUR
STUD
Edgy or elegant, stud earrings will always be in style, delicately floating on the ear without altering the silhouette. They are the LBD of jewelry. It’s no surprise then that many grooms are purchasing a pair of these versatile staples for their brides before the big day. It’s an earring that goes with every outfit, perfect for every moment, from “I do!” to your 50th- anniversary party.
The best way to find the perfect pair of studs for your style is to experiment, without reservation. We invite you to visit the Razny Jewelers nearest you where our specialist will be happy to style you for any occasion.

The end-of-summer rush It’s August. By the end of this month, if you have kids, they’ll likely be back in school. By September, the days get shorter and the breeze can suddenly feel a bit brisk. Sooner or later, if you’re like the rest of us, you’re going to start pondering all the things you set out to do this summer but ran out of time to enjoy or accomplish. Which is why August, no matter if you’re reading this on the 3rd or the 28th, is the perfect time to slam the gas pedal down and fill up the calendar to make the most of the summer that still remains. In other words, it’s go time. A day at the beach, bike or boat tours, dinner and drinks along the Riverwalk or at a trendy rooftop lounge? Maybe an afternoon game in the bleachers at Wrigley or some sidewalk browsing in Wicker Park and Old Town? It’s all here for the taking in Chicago. Like we said. It’s go time.

Dinosaurs at the Field 1
INSIDER PROFILE
2
The Field Museum’s new exhibit, Antarctic Dinosaurs, is performing very well in our visitor polls, so we feel it is successfully telling the story of prehistoric Antarctica. The exhibit is very immersive and visitors get transported to present-day, icy, nearly lifeless Antarctica, and then back in time to when life thrived there. We showcase fossils from Antarctica along with life-sized reconstructions of these animals in their environments. Some of the highlights are skeletons and life reconstructions of Jurassic dinosaurs — including two species that are so new to science they don’t yet have scientific names — as well as giant crocodilesized amphibians and some of the clothing and items used by the earliest Antarctic explorers. Throughout the exhibit, visitors learn about changes in the earth’s history like continental drift and how Antarctica changed from being a forested landmass teeming with life to the barren ice desert it is today. The Field Museum is a great place to learn about the diversity of life on Earth and its history. Our exhibits showcase some amazing specimens and artifacts that tell stories guaranteed to blow your mind. And we change it up pretty often, so visitors Peter Makovicky is the Curator of Dinosaurs in the Field Museum’s Section of Earth Sciences. He has conducted fieldwork on four continents and described more than 15 new dinosaur species. He is lead curator on the Antarctic Dinosaurs exhibit and on the new SUE experience.
will always have something new to see.

Maximo is a titanosaur, a family of sauropod dinosaurs that lived mainly in the Southern Hemisphere in the Cretaceous Period. Our cast is based on parts of six individuals that were found together at a site in Patagonia, where they perished about 100 million years ago. At 122 feet and an estimated 70 tons, it is the largest dinosaur yet discovered.
4
The star of our show is Cryolophosaurus a 26-foot-long predator with a crest running across the top of its skull. When we were excavating its skeleton, we kept finding shed teeth of what we thought was a smaller species of predator in the rock alongside the bones. After some careful study, we determined the teeth actually belong to the same species — Cryolophosaurus fed on its own kind 195 million year ago! Just as today, Antarctica was a tough place to survive back then, only for different reasons. Get the app keychicago

Sharks at the Shedd 1
INSIDER PROFILE
Every year, two million guests come face to face with sharks throughout Shedd. In the Wild Reef exhibit, guests have an opportunity to explore a coral reef in the Philippines that is known to be one of the most diverse underwater ecosystems in the world, and it’s home to more than 20 sharks at Shedd. Through this journey 25 feet below street level, all ages get a glimpse of island life though this multisensory, interactive exhibit. From the blacktip reef sharks and sandbar sharks that constantly cruise in the mid- to upper-level waters to the slow-swimming zebra sharks and sedentary, bottomdwelling wobbegongs, shark enthusiasts will be thrilled to get up close to this range of species. Shedd also has a Shark Feed Tour, where you go behind the scenes in Wild Reef for a deeper dive to experience meal time with the sharks during a 90-minute guided tour with our experts. Sharks are beautiful and powerful, yet mysterious, and illusive. Across more than 400 species, they take many shapes and sizes, allowing them to inhabit all areas of the ocean. They invoke fear, love, hate, admiration, respect and obsession. ... Despite all this, there is still so much we don’t know about them.
One thing that always seems to surprise people is finding out that sharks are older than trees. Sharks originated on this planet around 450 million years ago, some 100 million years before the origin of trees. Since then, they have survived through five massextinction events, and not until the emergence of mechanized fishing were shark populations ever under threat.
There are many misconceptions about sharks I hear on a consistent basis. I think a lot of people think that if they come across a shark in the ocean, it will automatically attack them. This is very far from the truth. People and sharks cross paths every day, most commonly at beaches, yet incidences of people getting bitten by sharks are extremely rare.

Photo ops everywhere
A sprawling, diverse, award-winning center for art, music, architecture and landscape design, Millennium Park should make your short list of places to visit in Chicago. Located in the heart of downtown between Michigan Avenue and Lake Shore Drive, the 24-acre park has no shortage of photo opportunities and fun. MillenniumPark.org A favorite for Instagram and Facebook users everywhere, Cloud Gate, the structure more commonly referred to by locals as “the Bean,” is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Chicago and constructed of 110 tons of polished stainless steel plates to reflect the city’s famous skyline. A potential Christmas card photo awaits outside with the Michigan Avenue reflection behind you. The Pritzker Pavilion, widely considered the most sophisticated outdoor concert venue of its kind, is home to Chicago’s Summer Film Series, Summer Music Series and a host of other events throughout the year. The beautiful Lurie Garden is an ideal spot for a quiet stroll. If the kids need to blow off some steam, the play garden, climbing wall or skating ribbon at Maggie Daley Park are worth a stop.

Shopping
Back to school It’s August, and that means if you have kids, you need to start thinking about back-to-school clothes to make sure they’re properly clothed in the latest (and most affordable) trends. Or at least see to it that they don’t look like they just rolled out of bed. Along the Mag Mile, Nike Chicago (formerly Niketown) at 669 N. Michigan will get them ready for the fall sports season. It’s a rather iconic store due to the sheer number of new releases and the fact Chicago is home to the one and only Michael Jordan. ... H&M (840 N. Michigan) is another favorite brand with plenty of deals this month for everything from jeans and shoes to sweatshirts and leggings. ... Another busy spot for activewear is the Under Armour Brand House (600 N. Michigan), boasting 25,000 square feet of shopping and interactive fun.

Sure, it’s a chain, but Crossroads Trading Co. is your best bet for trendy, in-season clothes at phenomenal prices. Everything is lightly used, but certainly not vintage; Crossroads boasts a carefully curated mix of big brands, boutique and offbrand designer labels for all articles of clothing, shoes included. Though there’s plenty of casual wear, it’s a great spot for young professionals looking to purchase exciting workwear at a bargain, and older clientele looking for the occasional higher-end products. 1519 N. Expect to find contemporary, laid-back clothing in the $10-$20 range. Nothing special, but it’s packed with some cool additions to your everyday wardrobe. 1478 N. Milwaukee Ave. BuffaloExchange.com It seems almost demeaning to label Store B as a thrift store; perusing its selection is like taking a course in fashion history. If you’re looking for a $5 Velvet Underground shirt, keep looking. Velvet, fur, Chanel, Ralph Lauren — Store B is an index of high fashion, vintage and designer. Old-school dresses, coats, shoes and accessories abound, and their selection of elegant hats is unparalleled. Expect to spend at least $50 on a major item, though you’ll be getting a bargain compared to the original cost of most of their inventory. Gino’s East DAF: Go ahead, you’re on vacation As good as something is, you can always make it better. That philosophy holds true with a lot of things in life, and Gino’s East — even with its 50-year history and national reputation for iconic deep-dish pizza — is no different. The most recent example is their “Deep AF” option, a play on popular social media lingo. In short, it’s an upgrade to Gino’s original medium deep-dish pizza, adding a stomachgrowling 75 percent more cheese, 33 percent more dough and double the toppings — all for just $4 more than the normal medium pie. Sounds like a good choice to make while treating yourself on vacation, no? Especially at the River North location (500 N. LaSalle), where they also brew their own craft beer and host comedy shows. 500 N. LaSalle, 162 E. Superior, 521 S. Dearborn and 2801 N. Lincoln. GinosEast.com

LaBriola Café & Ristorante has quickly become a Michigan Avenue favorite, in large part because it offers a bit of everything. Don’t forget the sweets counter with an assortment of cakes, cookies, pastries, baked goods and a rotating gelato freezer. On the other side of the café is a simple bar with a globally inspired wine list and craft beers. Chicago’s best burgers Pub Royale
I adore this restaurant, which is a take on a British pub serving a mix of Indian food and pub food. It would be easy to overlook the burger, but that would be a mistake. The “Royale with Cheese” consists of one, large beef patty. The ingredients mimic those of the Au Cheval burger — it comes topped with finely diced red onion, housemade pickles that are cut very thin, and aged cheddar. 2049 W. Division. PubRoyale.com
Cochon Volant Au Cheval
Eating at Au Cheval is all about luck and timing. The burger is out of this world amazing, but you need to either get there 30 minutes before they open, go late night on a weeknight, or be very, very lucky to score a table. The Au Cheval burger is the best because the beef patties are just the right size and thickness for stacking, the cheese is perfectly melted over each patty and the dijonnaise, chopped onion, and thinly sliced pickles are the perfect complement to the beef. You are given the option to add bacon and/or a fried egg on top. It’s everything you ever wanted from a burger. 800 W. Randolph. AuChevalChicago.com
Longman and Eagle
I think the “Slagel” burger with cheddar and bacon is the No. 2 burger in Chicago. L & E uses only the highest-quality ingredients; the beef comes from the Slagel Family Farm in Illinois, the sharp cheddar is from Widmer’s Cheese Cellars and the bacon is Nueske’s (both in Wisconsin). The burger itself is a half pound of beef, cooked to your temperature preference, and topped, simply, with cheese and bacon. It’s a basic burger done right. And did I mention that it comes with beef-fat fries? Unfortunately, L & E doesn’t take reservations, so plan accordingly when heading to Logan Square. Your best bet is to get there as soon as they open. 2657 N. Kedzie. LongmanAndEagle.com

keymagazinechicago.com
Their “Le Cheeseburger Royale” is very similar to the Au Cheval burger. It has two thin patties topped with cheese, onion, dijonnaise, bacon and pickles on a soft brioche bun. They use prime, dry-aged beef, and this helps set it apart from other burgers in Chicago. Cochon Volant is a popular destination for weekday power lunches, but they do take reservations, so you never have to wait for a table to get this burger. It’s pretty easy to walk in for dinner or brunch (yes, the burger is on the brunch menu too). 100 W. Monroe. CochonVolantChicago.com

Nightlife
Classic Chicago The Windy City has been at the forefront of both jazz and the blues for generations. Here are two legendary spots that continue to churn out good tunes and good times.
Green Mill
The vibe: From the moment you walk in beneath the classic neon sign, the Green Mill is as cool as could be. Some nights, it’s like stepping into another dimension, as you watch hipsters in vintage garb skillfully swing dance the night away. Other nights, bartenders politely ask you to keep your voice down as you enter, and the club is packed with locals and tourists who have come to hear some of the most talented jazz musicians in the world. A soft pink glow pervades the Green Mill, and vinyl booths line the interior — Al Capone famously preferred the booth in the middle of the club that allowed him to keep an eye on both entrances at once, even though its back is to the stage. Thoughts: Under Dave Jemilo’s ownership the last 32 years, the Green Mill, which opened in 1907, has remained classy and classic. “It hasn’t changed much,” he says. “Sometimes, I gotta raise the prices a little bit, but we still have dial telephones, we still don’t
have any internet, still the same cash registers, no computers, no nothing.” Fun fact: Upon taking over the club in 1986, Jemilo discovered bootleggers’ tunnels used to smuggle alcohol in and out of the club during Prohibition. 4802 N. Broadway. GreenMillJazz.com
Kingston Mines
The vibe: Kingston Mines, with walls painted with scenes of the Mississippi Delta and the feel of a log cabin with long, communal tables and sizeable dance floors, is every bit authentic. What are the blues, after all, if not no-frills and unpretentious? Kingston Mines has always been devoted to providing a good (and affordable) time on its two separate stages, and an elaborate drink list and Southern-style food menu help in that department.. Thoughts: “The music itself is a little more open-minded; it’s not straight-up blues,” says Joanna Connor, who’s played Kingston Mines’ two stages since the 1908s. “You’ll see more R&B, you’ll see more rock. It’s always been a place that’s had really dynamic, intense and great music, and it’s always been a late-night club, attracting a variety of people from all over the world.”
50
keymagazinechicago.com
Fun fact: A host of celebrities have come through over the years. Connor, in fact, got to play with Jimmy Page in the ’80s and met Mick Jagger and Aretha Franklin. Save $3 off the cover charge with the ad on page 49.2548 N. Halsted. KingstonMines.com
Let’s grab a drink
Game on
The Old Town Pour House, just north of downtown, has earned its stripes as a local favorite to watch sports. With 90 beers on tap, it’s been named one of America’s 100 best beer bars by Draft Magazine and offers a tasty menu and mesmerizing TV setup. 1419 N. Wells. OldTownPourHouse.com
Tapster, a new addition to the trendy Wicker Park neighborhood, is a magical adult Disneyland. Beer, wine, cocktails, coffee, even kombucha — they have it all on tap! They utilize the frozen yogurt system of service, so customers can grab a glass, walk up to the taps and pour themselves a glass of whatever they like. The neon-lit, exposed-brick space is open, hip and hopping. Like any good bar, they have a weekly trivia night, as well as open-mic comedy on Tuesdays. Plus, they have an assortment of snacks, charcuterie boards and sandwiches if you get some hunger pains. 2027 W. North Ave. TapsterChicago.com For being just a local watering hole, Brehon’s Pub has a crazy history. It was built as a tied house for Schlitz Brewery in the 1890s, but when the 1970s rolled in, Brehon was known as Mirage Tavern, where the Better Government Association created a sting operation to set up sheisty Illinois politicians (can we revisit that, maybe?). Quite the tale for a little corner bar. Now you can enjoy some wellcooked English fare and cozy on up to the bar with a beer as you mingle with the locals to make your own history.
