CHICAGO HARBOR LIGHTHOUSE This historic landmark may not roll off the tongue when considering Chicago’s famous buildings, but it sure is photogenic Chicago is a city loaded with iconic structures: the Willis Tower, Chicago River bridges, Ferris wheel on Navy Pier, Chicago Theatre, Wrigley Field and the Tribune Tower just to name a few. But one that gets overlooked, despite showing up on hundreds of photos every day, is the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse, which stands at the south end of the breakwater that protects the Chicago Harbor just east of Navy Pier and the mouth of the Chicago River. The light, which remains an automated active lighthouse, was originally constructed in 1893 for the World’s Columbian Exposition before eventually being moved to its present site in 1919, when the fog signal room and boathouse were added.

The lighthouse — still considered an active aid to navigation, meaning no access is permitted — was listed on the National Register of Historic Places back in 1984, and later designated an official Chicago Landmark in 2003. For a great view of the lighthouse from land, head to the very end of Navy Pier. But to truly get up close and personal, the best idea is to head out on a lakefront cruise from the Chicago Architecture Center (Architecture.org), Shoreline Sightseeing (ShorelineSightseeing. com) or Mercury, Chicago’s Skyline Cruiseline (MercuryCruises.com). From these boats, the photo opportunities of the lighthouse, with the skyline behind it, are splendid, especially on the way out or back in to dock. Get the app keychicago
