Museum Campus
The view from Museum Campus — between the Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium specifically — is stunning for sure, especially if you’re a fan of taking panoramic photos that can display everything from Soldier Field to Grant Park, Millennium Park and the skyline all the way across to include Lake Michigan, some sailboats and the Planetarium. “It’s where you see our front porch,” says Lance Friedmann, tour director of the Chicago Architecture Center’s river cruises. “It’s unbeatable.”
Millennium Park
1,353 FEET UP
The Bean in Millennium Park, officially known as Cloud Gate, is a popular spot for reflective photos — and particularly appealing on a clear day when you can get the historic buildings on Michigan Avenue in the frame with you. Just a bit to the south of the Bean is Lurie Garden, an oasis of sorts that will provide a flower-filled photo op of the skyline from a different angle.

Had enough sitting or walking while taking in all the sights? Try something new and let these self-balancing machines do the work for you, and then rely on Absolutely Chicago Segway to lead you on a fun, unique tour that covers the lakefront and museums, art and architecture, or even the city’s gangster or haunted past. 312-552-5100. ChicagoSegways.com
Beachfront access Oak Street Beach (500 N. Lake Shore Dr. north to 1550 N. Lake Shore), is just a short walk from the Magnificent Mile and is a great spot for photos, as it offers spectacular skyline vantage points of the aqua-colored lake, the former Hancock building, famous Drake Hotel and a host of age-defying Gold Coast condos along the lake.
Few places in the world offer up views as transcendent as The Skydeck Chicago, located on the 103rd floor of the iconic Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower), some 1,353 feet up in the secondtallest building in the Western Hemisphere, complete with interactive kiosks and educational exhibits. And guess what? You can see four different states on a clear day. No kidding. And don’t forget to test your will with a stroll out on “The Ledge,” where glass bays extend out four feet from the Skydeck for a great Christmas card shot. The Willis Tower Skydeck is open 365 days a year. 233 S. Wacker Dr., with the Skydeck entrance on Franklin. TheSkydeck.com

Riverwalk
Fun on the river’s edge 1 Hopefully by now, whether you’ve been here a week or an hour, you’ve come to the full realization that Chicago traffic can be pretty awful, so why suffer through red lights and potholes when you can get shuttled from one impressive landmark to another on Lake Michigan or the Chicago River, and in style, with Shoreline Sightseeing’s water taxi service? Shoreline offers five taxi docks, all conveniently located near major attractions like the Willis Tower, Michigan Avenue/Riverwalk, Museum Campus and Navy Pier, making it both efficient and fun to experience as much as possible during your stay. And the Instagram possibilities are endless. 312-222-9328. ShorelineSightseeing.com

Offering an impressive rotating list of brews, with a serious emphasis on the local craft beer scene, Chicago Brewhouse enters its second season on the Riverwalk and has established itself as one of the pathway’s most popular gathering spots. A lot of that has to do with a creative assortment of sharable street foods from Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods (think crab wontons, al pastor tacos, Maxwell Street Polish sausage, falafel and hummus bowls, etc.). 31 E. Free art displays are always good. Especially something this size. Art on theMART is a permanent public art installation that is unprecedented in scale, utilizing more than one million lumens to illuminate the 2.5-acre façade of theMart (formerly the Merchandise Mart) every night approximately 30 minutes after sunset. The innovative software-driven platform allows curators to create an ongoing, timely and engaging exhibition of imagery from various artists. The best views are on the Riverwalk between Wells and Lake Streets. For more info, visit ArtOnTheMart.com
ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES
The Chicago Riverwalk, a relatively new (and quite popular) open-air pathway more than a mile long that blends the energy of the city with a sense of outdoor living. Spanning from Lake Shore Drive to Lake Street, it’s filled with several dining and drinking possibilities, as well as fun activities (kayaks, boat rentals, tours, etc.). Quite simply, it’s a gorgeous space to relax and take in the sights at river level. See page 30 for restaurants with great views of the river.

Kids’ Corner HUNGRY YET?
Mini golf with nature
The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum is loaded with enriching exhibits and opportunities for handson interactions with a variety of animals, especially in September, when you can still explore the entire grounds. Plan your day around the Critter Connection from 1212:15 p.m. each day, where you can get up close with one of the 50 animal species that reside in the museum’s lab (think snakes, turtles, salamanders, etc.) or enjoy an animal feeding from 1-1:15 p.m. each day in the Mysteries of the Marsh exhibit. A new exhibit that captures the imagination is Fore! The Planet, a miniature golf game with themed holes that help little ones learn more about the natural world around us, and how they can help keep the Earth going strong. 2430 N. Since 1992, Vale Craft Gallery owner Peter Vale has been exhibiting contemporary American fine crafts and sculptures, including works in metal, fiber, clay, glass, wood and mixed media by primarily Chicago and Midwestern artists. A new exhibit worth checking out is Color and Texture featuring fiber art by Boisali Biswas and ceramic vessels and wall pieces by Randy O’Brien — both of whom catch the eye with bold colors and innovative textures. 230 W. Superior. 312-337-3525. ValeCraftGallery.com Addington Gallery, a major part of the River North District for more than two decades, is known for a type of art that dates as far back as the 4th century B.C. — paintings created with hot wax, as well as both abstract and representational contemporary paintings. Susan Kraut: Interiors is on display this month, featuring paintings “meant to evoke a small piece of the world caught in a moment of stillness,” according to the artist. 704 N. Wells. 312-664-3406. Both established and emerging artists provide Gallery Victor Armendariz’s contemporary art collection in a variety of media. The studio is designed to be a “thought-provoking examination of the creative process.” Stop by to step into the pop cultureobsessed world of artist Steve Banks. Oktoberfest celebrations
OKTOBERFEST STREET FESTS German-American Oktoberfest Sept. 6-8 This massive celebration of all things Deutschland heritage is held in the quaint Lincoln Square neighborhood at the corner of Western and Leland Avenues and serves as the official kickoff of the season. The street party consists of two giant tents and plenty of German grub, music and dancing. Germanday.com/Oktoberfest
Revolution Oktoberfest Sept. 27-28 The Berghoff — Sept. 8-Oct. 8
The Berghoff, and its incredible 121-year history in town, is forgoing its normal outdoor festival in favor of an extended celebration inside the iconic restaurant in the Loop. It all kicks off with a tappingof-the-keg event on Sept. 8, and the fun continues all the way through Oct. 8, with live Oktoberfest music every Thursday-Saturday in that timeframe. Expect plenty of reubens, sauerbratens and schnitzels throughout the event, which dates back to 1984, and now gets to show off the beautifully restored bar and new in-house brewery, Adams Street Brewery. Enjoy a few pints of their Oktoberfest bier, which happens to be brewed by a third-generation employee. 17 W. Adams. TheBerghoff.com
Hofbräuhaus Sept. 13-Oct. 31
There’s no celebration like Munich, but this six-week party might come as close as you can find in the Chicago area. Hofbrauhaus in suburban Rosemont features live music, gigantic steins of Oktoberfestbier and a menu of Bavarian schnitzels, sausages and more. 5500 Park Place in Rosemont. HofbrauhausChicago.com
The popular Revolution Brewery turns Milwaukee Avenue in Logan Square into a block’s worth of Bavaria for two days with another incarnation of its annual Oktoberfest street festival that features a barrel-aged beer tent, plenty of live music and great food. Located outside the Revolution Brewpub at 2323 N. Milwaukee Ave. RevBrew.com
Oktoberfest Chicago at St. Alphonsus Sept. 26-28 Arguably the most popular Oktoberfest celebration (and fall event) for locals, this Lakeview festival is back for an 18th season with an impressive array of beer, brats, giant pretzels and authentic German bands — and plenty to keep the kids entertained. Don’t miss the craft beer tastings inside the parish’s German beer hall. Located at the corner of Lincoln, Wellington and Southport. OktoberfestChicago.org Get the app keychicago

restaurants BEATNIK ON THE RIVER
Dining with a river view A year and a half ago, Beatnik On The River debuted its 80-seat riverfront patio, and earlier this year, the interior dining room followed suit to provide Chicago with another incredible space in which to dine (the original Beatnik resides in the West Town neighborhood). The patio is filled with pillow-topped Indonesian daybeds, Moroccan lanterns and plenty of lush greenery, as Beatnik on the River draws inspiration from the Bohemian hipsters of the 1950s and ‘60s. The menu blends the flavors of Asia, Mexico, the Middle East and South America. 180 N. Upper Wacker Dr. BeatnikOnTheRiver.com Established in 1996, Rivers, which is located on the lobby level of the CME Building, is one of the Loop’s more popular restaurants, especially for business lunches or for meeting up for happy hour drinks or dinner. Its proximity to the Civic Opera House and several downtown theaters makes it a sought-after spot for a pre-show meal — especially with its seasonally changing, contemporary American cuisine (Insider’s tip: Take advantage of the fresh fish selections). The large outdoor covered deck overlooking the river is quite popular as long as the weather holds. 30 S. Wacker. 312-559-1515. RiversRestaurant.com
RIVERS
RIVER ROAST As if the stunning views of downtown and the Chicago River weren’t enough, River Roast is also home to James Beard Award-winning chef Tony Mantuano and executive chef Cedric Harden. The menu leans toward contemporary American tavern fare, but the presentations can be dramatic (see the whole roasted chick and fish), with several options meant to be shared. Insider’s tip: Check out the Blues and Brews Brunch with live music from 12-3 p.m. on weekends. 315 N. LaSalle. 312-822-0100. RiverRoastChicago.com

Stock and Ledger
CHICAGO CURRY HOUSE
At Stock and Ledger, they believe in the concept of investing a little more time when it comes to sourcing quality ingredients — locally farmed, sustainable and hormone and antibiotic free. This newly constructed space offers a modern design but carries a neighborhood feel as well, making it ideal for a working lunch in the sunny atrium, a private event or dinner before a show. Featured dishes: New to the menu is the sustainable salmon that comes to rest on a bed of arugula, green beans, cherry tomatoes, basil and avocado with a balsamic glaze. Nueske’s bacon risotto is another rich, delectable favorite, and the combination of smoked gouda and parmesan do the trick. Insider’s tip: Check out their 3-7 p.m. weekday happy hour in the bar and patio that includes $8 wines, $10 martinis and cocktails, $5 beers and a number of discounted shared plates. 70 W. Madison. 312-754-0395. StockAndLedger.com

If you’re feeling like making that sweet tooth happy, the popular bakeshop chain Molly’s Cupcakes, known for its red velvet cupcakes, cookies and pies, has opened two more Chicago locations in the last few months — in the South Loop (1150 S. Wabash) and West Loop (177 N. Morgan). MollysCupcakes.com
