Millennium Park: The center of it all The town square of Chicago — or as close as we have to one — is the sprawling, gorgeous Millennium Park. Located in the heart of downtown between Lake Shore Drive and Michigan Avenue, this 24-acre space offers all kinds of options for entertainment, relaxation and photos ops. It’s an award-winning center for music, architecture, art and landscape design. For a full schedule of events and things to see, visit MillenniumPark.org There simply is nothing like a leisurely autumn stroll through the Lurie Garden, a beautiful 3.5-acre escape that has a way of making you feel completely removed from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis that lies just steps away. Plenty of nature and majestic views of the skyline. The “Bean,” which carries the official name of Cloud Gate, has become a primary attraction of the entire city, let alone Millennium Park, as well as a serious Instagram favorite. Some 110 tons of polished stainless-steel plates went into the building of the structure, which beautifully reflects the city’s famous skyline. Insider’s tip: Don’t leave until you step inside the concave chamber to see a distorted view of yourself.

Time for a stroll

The three-block-long walkway known as the Chase Promenade cuts through the center of Millennium Park. It’s lined by 200 trees — great when the October colors take hold — and leads to the incredible Pritzker Pavilion which, despite seeing its summer-long concert and movie series come to a close already, is still a spectacular structure to appreciate.

Museums

Discover the earliest civilizations Throughout October, the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago is hosting its OI Centennial celebration to commemorate 100 years of pioneering research of the earliest civilizations in the ancient Middle East. With more than 350,000 artifacts (many of which were excavated by its own archaeologists), the museum — fresh off a multi-million dollar renovation — boasts the largest collection of ancient Middle East artifacts in the United States, including 500 pieces on display to the public for the first time in conjunction with its centennial. Highlights include: A 4,000-pound ancient Persian stone relief, back home after 80 years on loan to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. It was carved from black limestone and dates back almost 2,500 years, showing a lion and bull locked in combat. Objects of everyday life like grooming kits, cosmetic containers and toys. Cuneiform tablets that demonstrate the development of the earliest writing systems in Mesopotamia and Iran. An Egyptian coffin for an ibis, a bird that was considered sacred to Thoth, the Egyptian god of wisdom, knowledge and sciences. 1155 E. 58th Street. oi100.uchicago.edu

DEPRESSION-ERA FOLK ART The famed Chicago Art Institute is home to one of best, most expansive art collections anywhere in the world. Fresh off its late-September opening is the new exhibit Photography + Folk Art: Looking for America in the 1930s. As the United States was struggling through the Great Depression, the country saw increased interest in folk art, as we aimed to separate American culture from European. What emerged was a self-made society that was unpretentious by comparison, and documentary photography was there to capture it all. More than 100 works of photography, decorative arts, painting, sculpture and textiles are on display from what was a nation in crisis, but also one full of character and inginuity. 159 E. Monroe. German subs and dinosaurs 1 Chicago’s world-renowned Museum of Science and Industry offers a plethora of vibrant learning opportunities in Hyde Park. A major highlight is the authentic U-505 German submarine that was captured in June of 1944 during WWII. Take the optional on-board tour for an interactive stroll through a fascinatingly cramped piece of history to experience life aboard the mysterious sub. The tour lasts 25 minutes and includes a Q&A session at the end. The U-505 tour is not included in the museum’s general admission price and requires a separate, timed-entry ticket ($18 for adults and $14 for children ages 3-11). A new addition to the U-505 is 75 Stories, a collection of rarely seen photographs, journals and artifacts that provide insight into the lives of German and American sailors and the sub’s early history. 5700 S. Lake Shore Dr. MSIChicago.org

2 If you want to learn about the diversity of life on Earth and its history, the Field Museum — with its nearly 40 million artifacts and specimens — needs to be on your to-do list. The Griffin Dinosaur Experience (right) is a big deal here. Check out Sue, the world’s largest, bestpreserved and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex in its own private suite, which showcases what Sue’s prehistoric world 67 million years ago was like. Also on display is Maximo, the Field’s Titanosaur, which happens to be the largest dinosaur to ever grace the Earth at 28 feet tall and 70 tons. While it’s easy to spend the better part of the day with the Field’s dinosaurs, don’t forget to save time for the other 40 million artifacts and specimens in its vast collection. 1400 S. Lake Shore Dr. FieldMuseum.org

3 The Adler Planetarium, with its interactive exhibits and historical and scientific knowledge, is a great way to spend a day. In the Telescopes: Through the Looking Glass exhibit, visitors will see rare telescopes — which span four centuries — as well as models, books and documents that detail how these important instruments have advanced our knowledge of the universe. 1300 S. Wishbone

For a bite to eat with the family before or after the Chicago Children’s Theatre, Wishbone will spoil you with its “Southern reconstruction cooking,” blending plenty of Cajun flavors with Southern-style specialties and comfortfood favorites. Chicago Children’s Museum

When it comes to pure entertainment for the kids, near the top of the list has to be this popular spot on Navy Pier. In this active, expansive museum, kids can dig for dinosaur bones, create artwork, scan items at a grocery store, test their building skills or help put out a fire. 600 E. Grand. ChicagoChildrensMuseum.org

Safehouse

This spy-themed subterranean restaurant in River North has plenty to entertain the child in all of us. The sizable kids’ menu full of classics is a great starting point, but plenty of secret passageways, recon missions, interactive displays and games only add to the allure. River North Arts District

Gallery Victor Armendariz Both established and emerging artists provide this gallery’s contemporary art collection in a variety of media. The studio is designed to be a “thoughtprovoking examination of the creative process.” Check out Jim Rose’s renowned steel furniture display, and appreciate the gallery’s ability to foster relationships between artists and collectors of all levels. 300 W. Superior. 312-722-6447. GalleryVictor.com

Addington Gallery The River North Arts District — located primarily along Chicago, Superior and Huron between LaSalle and Orleans — now boasts the largest concentration of art galleries in the entire United States outside of Manhattan.

Vale Craft Gallery

SMILE FOR THE CAMERA

Since 1992, Vale Craft Gallery owner Peter Vale has been exhibiting contemporary American fine crafts and sculptures, including works in metal, fiber, clay, glass, wood and mixed media by primarily Chicago and Midwestern artists. A new exhibit worth checking out is Color and Texture featuring fiber art by Boisali Biswas and ceramic vessels and wall pieces by Randy O’Brien — both of whom catch the eye with bold colors and innovative textures. 230 W. Superior. 312-337-3525. ValeCraftGallery.com

A major part of the River North District for more than two decades, this gallery is known for a type of art that dates as far back as the 4th century B.C. — paintings created with hot wax, as well as both abstract and representational contemporary paintings. Chicago: The home of great pizza 2 A neighborhood wine bar just steps from the popular Gold Coast nightlife district, Eduardo’s Enoteca offers up some authentic light Italian dishes that are perfect for sharing, and the stylish atmosphere, rustic wood interior and tree-laden sidewalk patio add to the experience. The pizzas, especially the vodka pesto version, are tasty, on the lighter side and affordable. 1212 N. Dearborn. 312-337-4490. EduardosEnoteca.com

CONNIE’S

1 Connie’s has been quality local tradition since 1963, when the owner traded in his Oldsmobile to open the first storefront on Chicago’s south side. Offering an assortment of salads, sandwiches and pastas from longstanding family recipes, it’s the authentic wood-fired and classic deep-dish pizzas cooked to a perfect crisp that have earned Connie’s stellar reputation. Just minutes from the Loop and Soldier Field, with a second location in McCormick Place. 2373 S. Archer Ave. 312-Connies. ConniesPizza.com

Blending Italian traditions with an innovative dining experience, Labriola is a reliable goto spot on Michigan Avenue. Whether you’re in the mood for salads, soups, sandwiches, hearty pasta options or other upscale Italian specialties, it’s all here. But don’t even think about passing on one of their signature artisan, thin crust or deep-dish pizzas for the table to share. One of our favorites is the Salsiccia, made with garlic cream, smoked buffalo mozzarella, caramelized onions, crumbled sausage, baby kale and Calabrian chili. The unique hand-held deep dish is perfect for lunch too. 535 N. Michigan. 312-955-3100. LaBriolaCafe.com

PIZZA, COMEDY, CRAFT BEER Gino’s East has a 50-year history and national reputation for iconic deep-dish pizza, constructed in seasoned cast iron pans until the crust is golden and flaky. It’s seriously decadent pizza. At the River North location (500 N. LaSalle), they also brew their own craft beer and host comedy shows six nights a week in the third-floor Comedy Bar. Check out weekday happy hours ($3 Gino’s draft beers, $4 house wine and well drinks and $5 select appetizers) from 3-6 p.m. and $8 lunch specials (entrée, side and drink) from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Gino’s East has four Chicago locations at 500 N. Come hungry

Eleven City Diner

Considered to be “a hybrid of sincere respect for what family dining rooms used to be,” the old-school diner and delicatessen knows a thing or two about what putting a plateful of scrumptious, rib-sticking food in front of you can do for the soul. Classic deli sandwiches stacked tall, decadent burgers and melts, and loaded breakfast favorites highlight the menu. One of our faves is Rubin’s Reuben, an open-faced corned beef or pastrami sandwich with Swiss, sauerkraut and thousand island dressing with fries. And don’t’ forget the thick chocolate malt, served in the tin, to top things off. 1112 S. Wabash St. 312-212-1112. ElevenCityDiner.com

Nepal House

In business for more than 12 years, Nepal House has earned a stellar reputation in the South Loop for serving up highquality traditional Nepali and Indian cuisine. No visit would be complete without starting off with an order of momos or garlic naan. Chicago’s celebrity chefs Rick Bayless

Rick Bayless may be best known for winning the title of Bravo’s Top Chef Masters, but his resumé is much more full than that with nine cookbooks, a highly rated Public Television series called Mexico — One Plate at a Time that has earned him multiple daytime Emmy nominations, as well as seven James Beard Awards ranging from National Chef of the Year to Best Podcast. His first two restaurants, Frontera Grill and Toplobampo, which opened next to one another in River North 1987 and 1991, respectively, have earned the James Beard Foundation’s Outstanding Restaurant award. Other endeavors include the fast-casual XOCO and its wood-oven tortas and Mexican hot chocolate, as well as Bar Sotano, a speakeasy-style mexcal bar he opened with his daughter that serves modern Mexican bar food. In 2016, he ventured to the popular West Loop and added the Baja-inspired Leña Brava and the craft brewery and Oaxacan-style taqueria Cerveceria Cruz to his empire. And on your way out of town, you can hit Tortas Frontera at O’Hare Airport and find the Frontera line of salsas and cooking sauces in stores coast to coast. For more info on his restaurants and recipes, visit RickBayless.com

Stephanie Izard

After earning her stripes at various Chicago restaurants, Stephanie Izard opened her first establishment, Scylla, in Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood, in 2004. Fast forward a few years, and Izard would find herself on Bravo’s Top Chef, which she won, becoming a fan favorite in the process. Soon after, teaming up with the esteemed BOKA Restaurant Group, she opened farm-to-table hotspot Girl & the Goat in the West Loop in 2010. Nominated by the James Beard Foundation for Best New Restaurant, it has remained one of the city’s most sought-after reservations ever since. She also was named one of Food & Wine Magazine’s Best New Chefs in 2010. But that was just the beginning of her successful run through Chicago’s culinary scene. Shortly thereafter, she opened the charming Little Goat Diner — “a celebration of the diner culture” — across the street, followed by the Asian-inspired Duck Duck Goat nearby on Fulton Market in 2016. Most recently, Cabra, on the 12th floor of the Hoxton Hotel, became the latest venture in the uber-successful collaboration with the BOKA Restaurant Group. It has easily been one of the hottest openings in Chicago this year, offering a Peruvian-focused menu with bold flavors, sharable plates, dynamite ceviches and a sleek rooftop space. Jimmy Bannos Jr.

As a fourth-generation restauranteur, Jimmy Bannos Jr. was practically raised in Chicago’s Heaven on Seven, the family-owned Louisiana-style restaurant he began to work at as early as five. A graduate of the College of Culinary Arts at Johnson and Wales University (where he happened to intern with none other than Emeril Lagasse in New Orleans), it wasn’t long until his passion for Mediterranean-style food led him to Italy for a halfyear immersion in all things culture, food and wine. What followed was a three-year apprenticeship under Mario Batali in New York, followed by another return to Chicago, this time to open The Purple Pig, which showcased the best of Italian, Spanish and Greek flavors. “Rising star” recognition immediately followed from the likes of Zagat, Bon Appetit, Food & Wine, The Wall Street Journal and the esteemed James Beard Foundation. The Purple Pig completed a stellar 10-year run on Michigan Avenue that saw them serve more than 10 million guests before moving to a larger space just down the street at 444 N. Michigan Ave. this summer, and Bannos has recently added two new restaurants to his portfolio — Purple Pig Salumeria, a cheese, charcuterie and European-style sandwich establishment inside the new Time Out Market in Fulton Market, and Purple Cow (160 E. Grand Ave.), which will focus on rare and underappreciated cuts of meat when it opens sometime next year. He also owns Piggie Smalls, a gyros restaurant in the Wells Street Market food hall (205 W. Quarter Pg. India House Ad-03.qxp_Layout 1 11/3 Wacker). ThePurplePigChicago.com
