CHICAGO CELEBRATES SONDHEIM! The Auditorium Theatre celebrates the 90th birthday of the legendary composer Nov. 16 with a wealth of musical talent Chicago’s iconic Auditorium Theatre is set to salute Stephen Sondheim, widely regarded as America’s greatest living composer and lyricist, who celebrates his 90th birthday during the theatre’s 130th season. This one-night-only performance takes place Saturday, Nov. 16 and features singers from around Chicago lending their unique vocal skills to various selections from the likes of West Side Story, Sweeney Todd, Follies, Company, Into the Woods, Sunday in the Park with George and many more.

Sondheim’s beloved collection of music will be performed by the Chicago Philharmonic, and the concert will be directed and produced by Chicago’s own Joan Curto, a local cabaret star who has been performing the works of Sondheim for decades. Home to the largest Tiffany stained-glass dome in the world, it also boasts an incredible amount of free art exhibits, lectures, film screenings and performances every day of the week. Whether appreciating the architecture of this iconic building or stopping in for a dose of culture, it’s easy to spend a good portion of your day at this national landmark. Founded back in 1966, the Chicago Architecture Center is one of the largest cultural organizations in the city. If you like a wide variety of tours, this is the place to be, as the CAC offers some 85 different options for discovering the city, with topics ranging from Historic Neighborhoods and Evolving Chicago to Art Deco Skyscrapers, Chicago’s Amazing Fair of 1893 and Parks and Public Spaces. Led by volunteer docents with a passion for all things Chicago, you can expect an informative, entertaining dose of city architecture and history, as well as opportunities for some stellar photo opportunities. All about Warhol The famed Chicago Art Institute is home to one of best, most expansive art collections anywhere in the world — and exploring it can easily occupy an entire day if you allow for it. New to the Institute in late October is the highly anticipated exhibit Andy Warhol — From A to B and Back Again, a large-scale retrospective that builds on the wealth of new research, knowledge and perspective that have materialized since Warhol’s death in 1987. The first major Warhol display to be organized by a U.S. institution in three decades, visitors will enjoy more than 400 works of one of America’s most beloved and iconic artists. Chicago’s world-renowned Museum of Science and Industry offers a plethora of vibrant learning opportunities in Hyde Park. We were able to experience the U-505 German submarine exhibit and tour recently and highly recommend it. Captured in June of 1944 during WWII, the 700-ton U-505 was eventually transported through the Great Lakes and to the museum in 1954, where it was displayed outdoors until 2004. The exhibit is great on its own, full of memorabilia, facts and films, but the on-board tour that takes you through a fascinatingly cramped piece of history — to experience life aboard the mysterious Nazi sub that wreaked havoc on British and American supply ships during the war — is full of captivating anecdotes and insight. The tour of the ship is not included in the museum’s general admission price and requires a separate, timed-entry ticket ($18 for adults and $14 for children ages 3-11). On the way out of the exhibit, check out 75 Stories, a collection of rarely seen photographs, journals and artifacts that provide insight into the lives of German and American sailors during the war. 5700 S. The mission of the Museum of Contemporary Art is to “present contemporary art and culture in ways that illuminate what it means to be a citizen of both Chicago and the world.” Focusing on how our lives are shaped by language and communication is the new exhibit Direct Message: Art, Language, and Power, which explores the ways artists since the 1960s have utilized words to question how we read, write, hear and speak. If you want to learn about the diversity of life on Earth and its history, the Field Museum — with its nearly 40 million artifacts and specimens — needs to be on your to-do list, especially the extensive dinosaur collection. One must stop is the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit, where visitors can experience the sheer beauty and intrigue of the natural world by way of 100 of the world’s most striking nature photographs chosen by an international panel from more than 45,000 entries. The Kinzie Chophouse, a gem of a steakhouse nestled in the River North neighborhood and just steps from the Merchandise Mart and the Chicago River, has been offering locals and visitors some of the best steak, homemade pasta and seasonal seafood dishes the city has to offer for nearly 30 years. And did we mention the award-winning wine list? Susan Fransca, who bought the restaurant on her own and refurbished in 1998 when she was just 37, held down the titles of owner, general manager and chef until selling the business in July to Nicole Flevaris and Andreas Tsakonas — and thus keeping alive the rare tradition of a womanowned steakhouse in Chicago. At Eris Brewery and Ciderhouse, they take inspiration from the Greek goddess of chaos, who threw the golden apple of discord into a party she wasn’t invited to. The ambitious startup, powered by a trio of women in a maledominated field, is similarly disruptive to the conventional approach of launching a brewpub in a city like Chicago, which is home to more than 100 breweries and growing. At the head of the operation is Michelle Foik, who has more than two decades of experience in the craft beer industry (including at giants like Goose Island and Revolution). Her business partner is Katy Pizza, better known as the “wrangler of details.” Opened in 2018 as the city’s first ciderhouse, brewing facility and restaurant under one roof, the rehabbed old Masonic temple is worth the trip up to Old Irving Park on its own, but off the wide-ranging menu — run by the third member of the female trio, chef Claire Smyth — try the smoked-then-fried cauliflower wings and a burger that consists of a scrumptious blend of Angus chuck, short rib and brisket with sharp cheddar and bacon jam.
