Quite the view So there’s a chill in the air and you’re not real keen on being outside too much during your December stay, but that doesn’t mean you don’t want to take in the iconic sights around town. We understand, and we’ve got you covered. Take a long (but fast) elevator ride to the 103rd floor of the famous Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) to Skydeck Chicago, which sits 1,353 feet up atop the world’s eighth-tallest building and comes loaded with interactive kiosks and educational exhibits. Fun fact: On a clear day, you can see four different states. No joke. Four of them. Don’t, whatever you do, head back down the elevator without walking out on “The Ledge,” where glass bays extend out four feet from the Skydeck to provide a truly unique view of the city. It’s an Instagram favorite for sure. And don’t miss out on the theater presentation called Reaching For The Sky, which tells the story of how the Willis Tower and many of the city’s other famous landmarks set architectural benchmarks after the Great Chicago Fire and for decades to come. If you happen to be taking the kids, make sure to check out the Skydeck’s website before your trip to explore a bunch of kid-specific activities, including fact sheets, quizzes, scavenger hunts and more. The Willis Tower Skydeck is open 365 days a year, from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. during the winter. 233 S. Wacker Dr., with the Skydeck entrance on Franklin. TheSkydeck.com

An affordable way to see downtown Chicago and its 77 distinct, diverse neighborhoods is aboard the city’s elevated train, better known as the L. Five of the CTA’s (Chicago Transit Authority) lines converge around the city’s center to form a “loop” before jetting out into the surrounding communities. Riding the L is an inexpensive way ($2.50) to check out the city and experience the outskirts of Chicago as locals do every day. You’ll find Chicago’s worldfamous architecture, street art, century-old brownstones and magnificent views of the river and parks right outside your window. If it’s your first time on the L, be sure to grab a seat or a pole to steady yourself because stops and starts can be slightly jarring. A few neighborhoods to check out: Old Town (brown line) is home to Second City and Zanies comedy clubs, the Chicago History Museum and a stylish, comfortable shopping and nightlife district along Wells Street. LGBTQ-friendly Boystown and Andersonville (red line) are meccas for quaint coffee shops and late-night party spots. The trendy Wicker Park (blue line) and Logan Square are home to plenty of craft-beer posts, eclectic shopping opportunities and popular eateries.

Theatre Christkindlmarket district Rivaling anything in the U.S. outside of New York City, Chicago’s theatre district in the Loop is an impressive collection of dance (Joffrey Ballet), opera (Lyric Opera) and stage (Chicago Theatre, Goodman Theatre, Broadway in Chicago productions at the Cadillac Palace, CIBC and Nederlander Theatres). Expect big productions and big names to grace the marquees, especially during the holidays. See page 18-25 of the Holiday Activity Guide insert and page 37 of this issue for more on Chicago’s impressive theatre scene.

This incredibly popular annual outdoor market in Daley Plaza offers traditional German food (bratwurst, pretzels, roasted nuts, chocolate, etc.), drinks and live entertainment. Vendors in this charming, illuminated village sell handmade ornaments, nutcrackers and cuckoo clocks. The market has been a Chicago tradition since 1996 and is influenced by the Christkindlmarkt in Nuremberg, Germany (which began in 1545). Admission is free. Insider’s tip: Not only do we recommend a boot-shaped mug of their famous spiced wine, but if you have a larger group, you can reserve a table in the heated tents — and even order a food and beverage package in advance through their website. Christkindlmarket Chicago runs Nov. 15-Dec. 24 Sun.-Thurs. 11 a.m.-8 p.m. and Fri.-Sat. 11 a.m.-9 p.m. 50 W. Washington. There is also a second Chicago Christkindlmarket location at Gallagher Way next to Wrigley Field running Nov. 22-Dec. 31. 312-494-2175. Christkindlmarket.com 2019 Holiday Activity Guide

Holidays

Macy’s holiday fun After taking in the 52nd annual Macy’s holiday windows (on display until Jan. 5), the Holiday Traditions Tour (which highlights the traditions of iconic State Street), stop by the 17,000-squarefoot Walnut Room, a dining landmark on the seventh floor complete with Austrian chandeliers, Russian wood paneling and — most importantly during the holiday season — a 45-foot Christmas tree with 15,000 lights that sits directly in the center of the room. Insider’s tip: The chicken pot pie and Grand Tree buffet are fantastic, but if the wait is too long to be seated in the Walnut Room, head to the adjoining wine bar that still offers views of the tree and an extensive, affordable wine list. And don’t forget to take the kids to Santaland on the fifth floor right up through Christmas Eve to meet the big guy himself. 111 N. State. VisitMacysChicago.com

SANTA SIGHTINGS Santa hangs around until Christmas Eve on the fifth floor of Macy’s at 111 N. State. Free personalized photo ops are available at the Santa House in Millennium Park. Visit MillenniumPark.org for schedules. Navy Pier’s Family Pavilion transforms into an all-new holiday market this season, complete with photo ops with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Lace ‘em up: It’s time to skate MAGGIE DALEY PARK SKATING RIBBON

Easily the most popular spot to skate in Chicago — and probably the Midwest — is the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink in Millennium Park, in large part because of the beautiful backdrop of not only Michigan Avenue, but also the reflective “bean” sculpture behind the rink. It’s free admission, and skate rental is $13$15. 201 E. Randolph. For a little kick, order the steak chimichurri tacos with marinated

Labriola

Blending Italian traditions with an innovative dining experience, Labriola is a reliable go-to spot on Michigan Avenue. Whether you’re in the mood for salads, soups, sandwiches, hearty pasta options or other upscale Italian specialties, it’s all here. Hot new restaurants of 2019 Flora Fauna, the hip, tropical-themed new restaurant in River North owned by a husband-and-wife team, has been a hit with its globally influenced menu with creative small plates with flavors from Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. The openloft design and large windows are a draw, as are the exotic spices and quirky ingredients. Go for the interesting twist on a Thai som tam salad that features Costa Rican jackfruit, as well as their Koji-cured steaks — think tender beef aged with fermented Japanese rice — with yucca tots, the jerk pork shank fried rice, seafood curry fritters or a variety of hot-pot creations. For dessert, the tres leches cake is made with strawberry-infused coconut milk, roasted pineapple and dried coconut. The signature cocktails and 4-6 p.m. weekday happy hour are noteworthy as well. 11 W. Illinois St. 312-624-9276. FloraFaunaChicago.com
