SHEN YUN The exciting, magical world of ancient China is celebrated at the Civic Opera House Dec. 27-30. Divinely inspired. That’s how the lost culture of ancient China has been described, and the focus of the mesmerizing Shen Yun dance company will take you back to this magical world to experience the art of classical Chinese dance come to life. Utilizing a stunning blend of traditional costumes, high-tech backdrops and an orchestra to complement the dramatic dance routines, this is a theatrical performance sure to leave you gasping for breath. One interesting aspect of this popular touring company is that Shen Yun cannot
be seen in China, where the communist governing body views the country’s opulent artistic and spiritual history as a threat to its strict principles. But thankfully, a group of Chinese artists converged in New York back in 2006 to revive the best of China’s heritage and share it with the world, bringing a great civilization back from the brink while also shedding light on the plight of modern-day people who live under the communist regime. The Civic Opera House is located at 20 N. Wacker Dr. 800-745-3000. ShenYun.com

Explore the city
Art and holiday fun at Navy Pier Chicago, especially during the holidays with the Magnificient Mile all aglow and Lincoln Park ZooLights attracting families from near and far, has never been short on eye-catching lights displays. But Navy Pier has managed to add to the creative, festive fun this holliday season with its free, temporary art installation called Passage, running through Jan. 6 along the Pier’s South Dock. Geared toward exploring the connections between light and sound, Passage is an interactive, immersive and modest work of art that guides guests through 20 circles of light, creating a tunnel of animation and sound as well as a personal, multisensory experience. While checking out Passage, don’t forget you’re just steps away from Winter Wonderfest, the popular tradition full of holiday fun (think rides, visits with Santa and ice skating) at Navy Pier. And with each ticket for Winter Wonderfest comes a free ride on the iconic Centennial Wheel, which happens to be climate-controlled and a perfect spot for photos. NavyPier.org Another fun, easy way to experience the magic of the holidays in Chicago is the Holiday Lights Tour with the Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co. It’s a 2.5-hour excursion through the city via decorated trolleys with stops to hop off and explore the German Christkindlmarket downtown and ZooLights at Lincoln Park Zoo. ChicagoTrolley.com
INSTAGRAM-WORTHY LOCALES The winding track that makes up the Maggie Daley Park skating ribbon provides a fun backdrop of the Michigan Avenue skyline. Try the new Odyssey riverfront lunch or dinner cruises, available in a climate-controlled, glass-encased vessel that provides unique views no matter the season. Tours and more
Chicago Detours Chicago Detours provides guided walking and bus tours of Chicago architecture, culture and history to both public and private groups, providing a fresh, insider perspective you won’t find elsewhere. Their Historic Chicago Walking Bar Tour will teach you about the city’s vast entertainment history, including Prohibition, theatre, jazz and various vices. And another big hit, making its triumphant return this holiday season, is the Holiday Tour of Drinks, Daleys and Dead Guys. It’s a downtown (and mostly indoor) walking tour that explores both classic and off-the-beaten-path sites and lesser-known stories that come from digging into the city’s vast archives. Chicago Detours takes aim at going beyond just the standard Chicago holiday traditions and instead shares Chicago’s history of both festive fun and surprising follies. Highlights include a Tom and Jerry cocktail at Miller’s Pub, viewing the Christmas tree inside Macy’s, diiscovering the connection between the Chicago blues and the holidays, and a stop at the Christkindlmarket. A Holiday Tour of Drinks, Daleys and Dead Guys often sells out, so advance registration is highly required. 312-350-1131. ChicagoDetours.com

Exploring Ancient Egypt If you want to learn about the diversity of life on Earth and its history, the Field Museum — with its nearly 40 million artifacts and specimens — needs to be on your to-do list while in Chicago. Check out the Inside Ancient Egypt exhibit for a look at the daily lives of ancient Egyptians and the many surprising similarities to life today. You enter the exhibit through a three-story replica of an ancient tomb that houses an authentic pharaoh burial chamber that dates back to 2400 BC and includes one of the largest collections of mummies in the U.S. Another highlight is a vivid recreation of a bustling Egyptian marketplace filled with hands-on learning opportunities. SKATING WARM-UP SPOTS Chicago’s ice-skating opportunities may not be quite as iconic as Rockefeller Center or Central Park in New York, but Millennium Park’s McCormick Tribune Ice Rink, Maggie Daley Park’s skating ribbon and Wrigley Field’s The Rink at Winterland at the Park are ideal for getting a little exercise and enjoying the Chicago skyline. What follows is a list of some favorite nearby establishments in which to warm up with a meal or cocktail after skating.

Another perennial local favorite in Wrigleyville, especially in the winter, is the casual Guthrie’s. Everything is just right: the lighting, the drinks and the coziness. This bar provides guests with an extensive game board selection to play on a cold night, and although there is no food, there are plenty of menus floating around to order in. Rivaling anything in the U.S. outside of Broadway in New York City, Chicago’s Theatre District is an impressive collection of dance (Joffrey Ballet), opera (Lyric Opera at the Civic Opera House) and stage (Chicago Theatre, Goodman Theatre, Broadway in Chicago productions at the Cadillac Palace Theatre and Oriental Theatre), all on or near a stretch of Randolph before leaking south on Wacker Dr. (Lyric). Expect big productions and big names to grace the marquees. In Chicago, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

One of the warmest places in Chicago is the Red Room in the Tortoise Club. The red walls will immediately make you feel warm and cozy. There is also a grand piano and fireplace that will take the chill off of any snowy night. Start with a bourbonbased Chicagoan cocktail and then choose one their delicious entrees (recommended: crayfish- and shrimp-stuffed walleye or Berkshire pork chop). Check out the weekday happy hour specials like $1 oysters and cocktail shrimp from 4:30-6:30 p.m. or half-price signature cocktails on Wednesdays from 4:30-7:30 p.m. 350 N. State. 312-755-1700. TIME FOR RAMEN What better way to warm up in this cold weather than with a nice bowl of ramen? High Five Ramen is a tiny restaurant located just underneath Green Street Smoked Meats in the incredibly hot West Loop restaurant row. The space is dark and cozy and only has 16 seats. You just sign your name in and have a drink at the bar upstairs while you wait. The half-spice ramen is just enough spice for most people, but if you’re feeling brave enough, you can always go full. The alkaline noodles they use are thick and chewy with a great texture, while the broth is spicy and delicious — and definitely satisfying to the soul on a cold winter day. 112 N. Eleven City Diner is a downtown favorite, perfectly described as “a hybrid of sincere respect for what family dining rooms used to be.” The diner and delicatessen knows a thing or two about putting a plateful of scrumptious, rib-sticking food in front of you.
