Welcome to The “Killearn Hoolie” With now only a couple of weeks until the beginning of The Killearn Hoolie it does not seem that a whole year has passed since the planning of this event began. What started as an unachievable task has now evolved into something much more than I could have ever imagined. I knew that with a lot of help and encouragement from committee members and friends we would be able to bring a long overdue event back to our village and from this “The Hoolie” was born! Having enjoyed the previous Gala days and the sense of the community spirit they brought, I felt that it seemed important for Killearn not to miss out again... However, instead of having a one-day event, we have now managed to create a whole week of entertainment involving lots of different local businesses, organisations and people of all ages. I even went back to school for the afternoon and consulted with the children as to what they would like to see happen. Their ideas were invaluable, so we have incorporated a lot of them into our Gala day itself: a word of warning adults, “soak the parent” was their idea!! To have been able to create such an event was an impossible task to undertake on my own. Therefore a large dedicated team of committee members have been working away to make all aspects of this week happen, and I personally would like to take this opportunity to thank them for all their hard work. Having a committee of people with all sorts of talents and expertise has allowed us to take a professional, modern approach

and develop our own website, create exciting logos, hold a 10K fun run and an evening event for 300 people on the Glebe! These events would be impossible if it was not for our sponsors’ generous donations and grants, and this support is very much appreciated. All that’s left for me to say is please keep checking the website for up-to-date information and the countdown to “The Hoolie” 10k and Fun Run! Also log in and watch the fantastic adverts filmed by the P4 pupils from Killearn Primary. The “Killearn Hoolie” committee look forward to welcoming you to all the exciting events planned throughout the week therefore supporting your village so that “The Hoolie” can go from strength to strength.

A glimpse of the past in Killearn • The name Killearn is of Celtic origin, “kill-ear-rhin” – the church of the west point – and first mention of a church in Killearn is in the mid 13th century. • The Old Church, now roofless, stands in the old graveyard and was built in 1734. What is now the Village Hall was built as a church in 1826, and the Kirk now in use, was built in1882 – a gift from Mr Orr-Ewing as a memorial to his younger daughter Ella. The Free Church was built in 1843, was once the Church Hall, and now houses the pharmacy and flats. • The Glebe was purchased from the Church of Scotland in 1946 following an approach from Killearn Welfare Trust. Two local parishioners financed the purchase, Mr. G. Innes and Mr. A. Cormack, thus keeping the ground as open space and so preserving the wonderful view. • Buchanan Monument, which dominates the village, was erected in 1788 and stands 103 feet high. George Buchanan (1506–1582) was a famous scholar, educated in Killearn, St Andrews and Paris, was multilingual, and travelled extensively in Europe. He became tutor to Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1562, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1567, and in 1570 he became one of James VI’s tutors. • The War Memorial was erected in 1924 and there are 28 names of those who fell in World War I, and 5 from World War II. • The Tollhouse, next to the Vet’s Surgery (once the Post Office) has a plaque listing the charges to use the road, dated 1841. These were discovered from a minute book of the Turnpike Trust, thanks to the collapse of a ceiling in Stirling County Offices in the 1970s.

• The Glen was presented to the village by Gordon the builders, and is now cared for by Stirling Council. Where the old yew trees are situated was the site of the original “Place of Killearn”. In 1999 the Ladies Linn was restored, where reputedly the ladies of the house “bathed”. • Well Green, opposite Spar, was where villagers collected their water in bygone days, and the well can still be seen there. • The Old Mill Inn buildings date from 1774 and were originally used as a carter’s yard. thereafter they were used as a weaving mill. In 1980, the buildings were converted and opened as a pub. • The Black Bull Hotel is clearly marked on a map of 1865 and has had a succession of owners. It is now owned by Punch Taverns and leased to Daniel Stewart. Fiona Glass

Shears at the ready!

Tom Lewis At this year’s Killearn Hoolie, I’ll be relieving myself of my gigantic mop of hair. Why? Not because I just realised we’re not in the 70s, but to raise money for my trip to China next year to teach conversational English. Project Trust has accepted me as one of their volunteers and I hope to greatly learn from this experience, so shears at the ready! Thanks. Ryan Morrison

Tom Lewis from Monachyle Mhor Hotel will be giving cooking demonstrations during the day in the Main Marquee. Tom has been described as having the puppy-like enthusiasm of a young Jamie Oliver, the winning self-doubts of an early Nigella, and Ramsay’s sense of theatre.

Killearn Primary School Killearn Primary School are looking forward to this exciting event. Primary 4 have been working with Jaqui McAlpine, an award winning BBC director, to make a promotional film for the Hoolie website. This has developed our children’s skills within a true context and for a real purpose. We are already ‘Oscar’ winners for our animations in P6, but this will give our up-and-coming film makers a wonderful experience. All children will produce a piece of art work to be displayed in the Panik Gallery. In addition to being published authors, now they will be recognised as artists who have had their work on show to a public audience. Good luck to everyone! Pat MacCowan Headteacher

Killearn’s Country Market provides an exciting range of local produce that includes handmade speciality breads, fresh meat, fresh eggs, chutneys, preserves, home baking, seasonal vegetables and gluten-free goodies. We have a large selection of artisan crafts created by talented locals. Our tea room is run by the PTA and their home baking is a treat not to be missed. You will find us in the Village Hall on the first Saturday of the month (except June & August) from 10.00 to 13.00. Come along, support the local groups there and enjoy a unique shopping experience. Catherine O'Halloran

The Glebe Trotters The Glebe Trotters, a group of established traditional folk musicians, have come together to support the Final Fling event and will provide us with a dynamic fiddlebased ceilidh sound. The band draw from the foundations of Highland music, with wild tunes, beautiful airs and the unique blend of fiddles and pulsating accompaniment.

Hell for Leather Catherine O'Halloran is a well-known and respected singer and musician in the Scottish music scene. Catherine, a versatile artist with a wonderfully distinctive voice, will set the scene, opening with a classy selection of songs ranging from ethereal folk to atmospheric indie and bluesy numbers. Catherine began singing with her mother’s folk band when she was 9 years old and won a a scholarship to tour New York State and Canada as part of renowned vocal group “Village Harmony” when she was just 14 years old. At 15, she found fame in Hong Kong as lead singer in the a capella girl group “Scent”. Recently Catherine has sung on the soundtrack for Oscarwinning film Elizabeth: The Golden Age and has sung on projects for Oliver Stone, Craig Armstrong (Moulin Rouge, Romeo and Juliet) and Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire).

Hell for Leather is one of Scotland's hottest and most exciting electric ceilidh bands and has an established track record for providing top-quality music for corporate and private ceilidh dance events. The band have played at numerous venues and events throughout the country including the Six Nations Rugby Championship at Murrayfield, Gleneagles Hotel, Dynamic Earth, The Drovers Inn, and The Lodge at Loch Lomond. With a great mixture of Scottish music, ceilidh dances, and rock/pop standards, Hell for Leather will have our guests dancing all evening and screaming for more at the end of the night!

‘Scotland’s Most Beautiful Distillery’- situated near Loch Lomond close to Glasgow is open all year round for award-winning Tours, Masterclasses, Whisky Tastings, Meetings and Private Dining.

Jim’s glad to work in a smoke-free environment Like most of us, Jim our ‘Mashman’ knows that smoke can affect our sense of taste. Which is why at Glengoyne our malted barley is dried without peat smoke. After all, everything we do adds flavour to our whisky – from the coaxing of the spirit through the stills at a rate much slower than any other distillery, to maturation in sherry casks for no less than 10 years –it would be a crime if we didn’t allow you to taste it properly. Some may call us old fashioned, but the nine men who’ve spent a lifetime perfecting the art of whisky making in our distillery, close to the banks of Loch Lomond, think that when you drink malt whisky you should taste the subtle complexity of its natural flavours.
