I just celebrated Valentine’s Day & I couldn’t help but think about how weird of a holiday it is. Legend has it was created by greeting card companies to boost business. You can get a day off to celebrate George Washington’s birthday, but not for a day that’s supposed to celebrate LOVE. If you’re in a great relationship check out now, but if you’re in a blah or crappy relationship, or you were alone this Valentine’s Day, read on, you might learn something [or actually get stupider]. I’ve gotten married on V-Day, dumped on V-Day, stood up and ripped off on V-Day. It is, at best, an awkward “holiday”, although I would imagine Arbor Day is stressful for lovesick lumberjacks. As a young child my mom made me give everyone in class a Valentine’s Day card, most of the other kid’s parents also forced this weirdness upon them. What a great concept of V-Day to develop: Love everybody, or at 22 KWBT
least tell them you do with a small, pink heart-shaped piece of paper with various sized hearts floating out of Wile E Coyote’s head. Simple, effective, weird. V-Day gets more difficult as we “grow up”. I once stayed home [truant] from school for 3 days after an embarrassing 8th grade incident. When looking for the perfect gift for a girl I liked, I ran across a new bottle of perfume on my mother’s dresser. I thought this gesture would overpower my intended gal because my amateur hypnotism efforts weren’t working. She loved it, mom didn’t. My plan went south when my sister ratted on me, and Mom came to school and yelled at me in front of a bunch of kids. I earned many nicknames from this incident [the most prevalent being “douche”]. That was the first of many bad ideas for Valentine’s Day presents. I’ll now share some of the
results from other ones with you. If only one person is helped, my work here is done. I was 17 and had been going with the same girl for several months. Her name was Sue and she was hot! Her mom was always at work so we had the run of the house. She planned a romantic dinner which was ruined during the present opening precursor to dinner. She gave me a teddy bear, silk underpants with our names embroidered on them and a hickie. I gave her a wizard candle and 2 Rolling Rock beers [I drank the other four before my arrival]. Amazingly, the “sin” I committed was not getting a card, instead, I taped a piece of paper to the candle that said, “I hope your mom doesn’t catch us fucking, you rock”. Two smashed beer bottles later [cans would have been a better choice] I was single. Lesson: buy a card and memorize the words the card company supplies. After being quizzed on the content of said card three time, I finally learned my lesson. At the age of 24, I took my wife to a resort called “Oliver Lover Chalet”. In my defense, it looked good in the brochure. We suffered a two hour drive and a prolonged argument over directions. As it turned out, the only things fucking in this shit hole were rodents and hookers. The eager front desk attendant harkened back to the “Bate’s Motel”. The little lady wouldn’t even go into the room. A long silent ride home resulted in NO sex and the silent treatment for some time. Note: I learned to love the silent
treatment later on in this marriage. Lesson: When planning a romantic trip do more research then pulling a brochure out of the rack at a Turnpike rest stop. The life you save may be your own. The nightmare of the Valentine’s Day wedding would take enough paper to delete a small forest. Suffice it to say, it’s a bad idea. I would have been better off marrying the ice sculpture keeping the shrimp cold. The following a is a partial list of other Valentine’s Day gifts that were also not so well received: Number 5 Taking the 2nd place trophy in the Big John’s Pub [NJ] annual V-Day beer chugging contest before I came home. Number 4 A membership to a gym for her. Number 3 A vacuum and a cookbook. Number 2 Offering to cook dinner for her and totally sucking at it. Number 1 Norwegian death metal CD. So this year, I can only hope you put a little thought into your gift. For example, getting my blow up doll a patch kit. Perhaps if I’d been a little more sensitive in the past I’d still be living in the house I pay for every month. Next year I won’t be shopping for whoever she may be in the appliance section of SEARS. BT: How many tattoos do you have? G: A lot. About 50.
BT: Are there any tattoos that you refuse to do? Like Nazi tattoos or swastikas? G: Personally, I think that people should make their own decisions. I don’t like every idea that someone comes up with, but I’m not going to tell someone that they shouldn’t do something. As far a Nazi symbolism goes, I would rather a guy that’s a Nazi have that symbol plastered on him to identify him than not. There are a few artists here that won’t do them though.

BT: Where did you start tattooing? G: I got tattooed by a guy I knew in New York. We became friends &I started hanging around his shop. I would help out with things, he started teaching me stuff & like I said, I was a decent artist, so I asked him a lot of questions. I always had an interest in it, but never really the time. After I moved down here, I ended up meeting a couple of other tattooers & things just kinda sprang up from there.
BT: Do you know why until 3 years ago the city of Key West didn’t allow tattoos, but Monroe county did? G: Nobody really knows for sure, but I believe it had to do with the Navy. There were a lot of tattoo shops in Key West back in the day, but the Navy was instrumental in having them shut down back in the 50’s. I actually opened the first tattoo shop in this area since then on Stock Island. No one ever thought about opening a tattoo shop that wasn’t in Key West. I found out that it was legal in the county, just not the city.

BT: What’s the funniest tattoo you’ve ever done? G: It’s hard to say. I did have 4 gay guys come in a while back. Three of them got little pigs tattooed on them & the last one got the big, bad wolf tattooed on him. It was pretty funny.

D: My girlfriend’s brother lived here 10 years ago & got into a very serious motorcycle accident. We lived in Minnesota & moved down here to take care of him for 3 months. That was it - I’ve been here for 10 years now.
BT: What is most appealing for you being a fighter in Key West? Most frustrating? D: I love being a fighter in Key West. I have such a big support system. To have a big fan base in a small town is every boxer’s dream. I love my Key West family. You know you have a great support system when people follow you everywhere you fight. Even when I fight out of town, I have people showing up for fights all the time. Most frustrating, I’d have to lie if I say it is frustrating to fight in Key West.
BT: Who’s hotter, ring girls or shot? D: Who is hotter? Have to say ring girls! BT: Any funny bar stories? D: You did not just ask me that. I work with naked girls & drunks! With that combination every day is a funny day at work. BT: Do you have a signature boxing move? D: My straight left is very dangerous, but it is my right upper cut that seems to put my opponents on the canvas. Since I a a south paw [left handed], they do not expect my right hand. BT: Nickname? D: My nickname is ‘White Lion’. BT: Have you played Wii boxing yet? D: I have played Wii boxing once, but sucked at it very bad. BT: Tell us about your first KO? D: My first knock out was actually at my pro debut in Chicago back in 2004. I knocked the guy out 22 seconds into the first round.
BT: How long do you train to get ready for it? D: You always stay in shape & ready as a professional boxer, the intensity of workout increases 8 weeks before a fight. BT: What are some of your likes/dislikes about working at Fogarty’s? M: I love working here! The view is great! I’ve got a lot of respect for them. Anyone that can run 6 restaurants, you gotta hand it to em! BT: What do you suggest to eat at Fogarty’s? M: The Sloppy Grouper Sandwich or the Grouper Karen or the Ribs! We’re not known for the ribs, but they’re awesome! They fall off the bone! And – a Miller Lite – I can make a mean Miller Lite! BT: What frozen drinks would you recommend? M: The Rumrunner is good, the Grainerade is good, & the Pina Colada is good! We use all fresh fruit – only a couple of the drinks come from a mix. BT: If someone wanted to buy you a drink, what should they send your way? M: A Miller Lite & a Jägermeister! BT: Who tips better in this town, strippers or bartenders? M: Bartenders! BT: How did you end up in Key West? S: In winter ‘99. My Girlfriend at the time’s brother had passed away. A month after I picked Key West as the place to take her to get away. I was so taken by this place that within 10 months I visited twice more. I took the plunge, left a great career, bought a houseboat & started over at 33 years-old. I moved here because of a growing need to figure shit out. BT: First job [paying or non-paying] on the island? S: My first freelance gig in Key West was with Brent from Key West Sound. I helped him wire a house in Cudjoe Key for audio visual. BT: How did you get into video? S: I majored in TV production. I had the perception that TV production jobs were more plentiful & paid well, while filmmakers became starving artists for at least a decade before earning cash. I was right. I also chose it because I knew I wanted a career that was both technically & artistically challenging, never boring & allowed me to travel & meet many different kinds of people. BT: How long have you been doing this? S: My first job in TV was in ‘86. I was vacation relief for network operators at the Viacom headquarters on Long Island. I had to roll tape & take the programs on air.
BT: How did you hook up with Chad Newman [business partner]? S: In 2003 I wanted to get back into filmmaking, so I did a free gig for local screen writer Mark Slater. It was a short pitch film to raise money for the feature length version of the Elena Hoyos story. At the premiere of the pitch film, Chad showed up with a director. He was in town about to do a documentary about the rainbow flag. I was hired to shoot it the next day. We have been working together since. We formed Digital Island Media in 2004, a full service media production company. BT: Have you won any awards? S: I have received several different industry awards over the years, but I just got my first Emmy award in December. It was for coverage of the Vandenberg sinking last May. BT: Any funny stories for a shoot? S: Chad is a former stand-up comic that actually worked the circuit at one time... everyday is funny with him around! BT: Nickname? S: This is a sore subject because I wish I had one of those cool Key West nicknames like Snake or Spider. BT: Favorite cocktail or beer? S: Capt’n Diet with twist of lime. BT: Favorite saying? S: ‘The longest journey in your life is from your head to your heart’, Chief Black Elk 2000.

It only takes one shot to get me drunk. I’m not sure if it’s the tenth or eleventh, but one of them does the trick. My appreciation for appetizer-sized portions of liquor developed around the same time as my fascination with fire. Beer didn’t do it for this eight-year-old, so I smuggled a bottle of Southern Comfort from the neighborhood block party, grabbed a can of lighter fluid and headed for my favorite climbing tree. Bottle in hand, I ascended the branches and arrived at my usual perch. The sounds from the block party seemed a world away as I unscrewed the cap, hoisted the bottle to my lips and belted one back like an outlaw in a Spaghetti Western. Water filled my eyes, my throat burned and my lips pursed as I spit the vile fluid towards a neighboring branch. I imagined John Wayne sitting beside me calling me a pussy as I resisted the urge to throw-up. Not one to disappoint, I regained my composure and went for round two. By the sixth shot I was feeling fine. My legs numbed and my chest was warm. Worries about adding, subtracting and kissing a girl for the first time disappeared into the bottle. Time stood still. I was at one with the Universe. The mood seemed right for a small fire, so I nudged the Southern Comfort bottle between two branches, grabbed a can of lighter fluid from my pocket and squirted a reasonable amount on my shoes. From my other pocket I retrieved a pack of matches. The match sparked and I watched in fascination as the blue flame spread across my Pumas, casting an amber glow through the leaves of the old maple tree. The fire seemed like a good idea at the time. It always does. But in less than a minute the flames spread to the nylon tongue 38 KWBT
of the shoe and showed no intention of going out. I smacked the shoe frantically and discovered, for the first time, the effects of alcohol on balance and coordination. My unplanned descent from the tree started full force. Everything moved in slow motion as I bounced from one branch to the next. Wood snapped and my body tumbled. As I neared the ground my shoe snagged a broken branch and I dangled upside down with my hands less than a foot from the ground. Gravity-induced sobriety alerted me to the fact that my shoe was still on fire. My attempts to reach up were fruitless and I squirmed like a pig stuck in a snare. The fire continued to burn through the tongue of the shoe until, at last, I was dropped unceremoniously to the solid earth below. A small group of adults from the block party came late to my rescue and asked if I was okay. I looked at them through glazed eyes before speaking. “I need a shot.” Drinking and fire have gone hand in hand ever since. I set the creek on fire while drinking Jack Daniel’s. Our living room fell victim to Peppermint Schnapps. There was an incident involving Jägermeister that resulted in the destruction of the playground at my elementary school and a few other friendly fires I can’t even discuss. My affection for fire and liquor peaked when flaming shots were the rage in nightclubs. I accidentally set a sorority girl’s
hair on fire in Miami. A bouncer in Cancun threw me out of a second story window and into the ocean below when a flaming shot set my Izod on fire. The Volusia County Sheriff asked me not to return to Daytona Beach for Spring Break. My eyebrows were singed for most of the ‘90s and a big part of the reason you don’t see flaming shots in bars anymore is people like me. I needed to learn a lesson. It was delivered in the summer of 2004. I took up temporary residence in Arcadia, Florida. The south-central Florida town produces citrus, sod continued on pg 40 39 KWBT
and beef and is populated by people who have a much closer relationship with the guy on the cross than I do. I purchased a secluded house surrounded by hundreds of acres of orange groves and soon realized that the town folk didn’t like me and I didn’t care so much for them. My main forms of entertainment were shooting guns, burning stuff and drinking, not necessarily in that order. I took to importing friends to ease the boredom and took pride in introducing them to the joys of a Podunk town. My friend Ronit came for a visit and we started on Jägerbombs shortly after the sun came up. By noon we had washed back the Jäger with several Miller Lites. Experience taught me bottles don’t burn as well as the rest of my trash, so I filled up six of them with premium gasoline and capped them off with strips of an old white T-shirt. My first Molotov Cocktails! The Duke would be proud. I chopped down an old orange tree, threw it on top of the trash heap and doused it with the gas that remained. Stepping back a safe distance, I lit the t-shirt fuse and counted to three before hurling it towards the garbage. I hit the target and the pile exploded in flames. I was in heaven. I lit another bottle and handed it to Ronit. She politely declined the fiery gift and I launched it away but missed the target. The next four were on point but I saw the missed cocktail had yet to explode. Like any good pyro, I approached the flaming vessel to investigate. What happened next I can only explain as a combination of stupidity, drunkenness and my life-long technique of 40 KWBT
throwing like a girl. I picked the bottle up as if to drink from it and hoisted it behind my shoulder with awkward girly precision. The gasoline flowed from the bottle to my back hitting the fuse on the way. I heard a loud “poof!” I was on fire. If you set yourself on fire, resist the urge to run. The flames were burning my hair when my drill sergeant personality took over and I screamed at myself to stop, drop and roll. I dove into a pile of red ants and squirmed around like someone experiencing a seizure. The flames went out and I looked up to see Ronit staring at me with a look of pity, concern and disbelief. “Are you okay?” she asked. I told her I needed a shot. The incident was a big wake up call for me. It was obvious I had major league problems and I needed to take the necessary steps to make sure this kind of thing wouldn’t happen anymore. I’m proud to say I addressed the problem head on. The first call I made was to my father. My voice trembled as I tried to speak, but my voice finally came through. “Dad,” I said. My Dad could tell something was wrong. My voice quivered again as I asked for the help I was so desperate for. “I need you to teach me to stop throwing like a girl.” My Dad understood. “I know, son. I know.” When I hung up the phone I poured a shot of rum, set it on fire and burned the roof of my mouth. It was the right thing to do. I wouldn’t want John Wayne thinking I was a pussy.

I have lost sleep this week over whether or not to write this column about the recent passing of long time Key West bartender Frank Carroll. I thought long & hard about what my fellow island drink slinger & buddy would want me to do & I believe I can envision his response. Frank would shrug his shoulders, toss his palms up, shrivel his face into a caricature of himself, snicker & say, “Sure, eulogize me Baby! But make it funny!” So, as difficult as it is to spin a eulogy into something funny for an entertainment magazine, I am going to give it my best shot. Many folks remember Frank as the sometimes surly but always funny bartender with the Boston ball cap & 100 watt smile. From the early days at Gato Gordo to his many years behind the bar at The Hog’s Breath & 58 KWBT
more recently Hurricane Hole, Frank was the consummate witty wise ass. Sometimes frosty to the tourists, always warm & fuzzy to the locals, he was a lovable character, even when you wanted to hit him. Which reminds me, I did hit him once. Quite a few Fantasy Fests ago, as I was passing through the Parrot en route to Kelly’s Kinky Carnival in costume, an intoxicated man flipped my skirt up & smacked me on the ass. Without even looking to see who the ass smacker was, I reacted by turning around & jacking the guy in the face. The smacker turned out to be Frank & he wailed, “Ah, dammit Leigh, it’s just me!” Although I felt badly that he had to tend bar at the Hog all through Fantasy Fest with a black eye, Frank learned a valuable lesson: It’s never alright to flip up skirts &
smack asses, not even those of your friends. Ever since that incident, he always approached me with caution, announced his presence & then ASKED if he could kiss me on the cheek. But Frank was more than just smacks & giggles. He was a talented & creative guy in both carpentry & in the kitchen. Many folks knew he kept a wood shop in Bahama Village, but most people didn’t realize that Frank was also a trained chef. As the lucky recipient of some of his cooking I can attest that the man could cook. Back when I worked late nights at Schooner Wharf, Frank used to bring me weekly Tupperware dinners of his home cooking. To this day I still make his recipe for ham & split pea soup. His goofy antics & his penchant for functioning while severely hung over served many times as fodder in my columns. Once I wrote “Bar Anthropology,” a spoof on Latin genus & phylum of the types of customers one finds in a bar. Frank served as the inspiration for: “Regularectus-Rumplectus: a very regular customer who drinks lots of Rumplemintz.” [That was long before his Black Russian days, when he still was on the Amstel & Rumple.] He also inspired the Category Three Hangover description from “Rate Your Hangover” circa 2003, when his Hog’s Breath co-workers told on him, “You show up to work 20 minutes late with your shirt on inside-out. Your cognitive capacities have certainly been compromised,
you smell like booze & are functioning on autopilot.” All silly drinking stories aside, sitting at Frank’s bar was truly a pleasure. Always offering a goofy grin & a wise crack or two, he was a treat, even when some rotten tourist had just ordered five Rum Runners & every other word out of his mouth began with the letter “f.” From the other side of the bar, Frank was also an awesome customer. I miss my Saturdays with him at the Parrot when he would saunter in, plop down atop a stool & start storytelling. The guy could always light up the bar with his humor & his wit. & it should be noted, he was a fat tipper, even when he himself was down on his luck. I sat at the Parrot with Brigg & Ginger the night I got the news he was gone. We were trying to come up with the perfect words to describe our friend. “He was funny!” said Ginger. “He was a rascal!” I said. “He was always horny!” said Brigg.
