A Shameless Plug for the Most Awesome Bar Dessert Ever You’re welcome.
It sounds premature now, but will save me the trouble of accepting your thanks down the road when your mouth is filled with alcohol and sugar and you fall to your knees worshiping the concoction I wish I had invented, but take full credit for popularizing as the newest delicacy in the Florida Keys.
I know what you are thinking.
“Oh, great. Sloan is on a roll about his fucking Key lime pies again.” (The Key Lime Pie Cookbook by David L. Sloan is available at www. keylimecookbook.com, Island Books, The Restaurant Store, Margaritaville and The Key West Key Lime 20 kwBarTab.com
Pie Company). But even if you hate Key lime pie, stick with me for a moment. This involves booze, and just the mention of booze makes your eyes widen as you pull this magazine a little closer to your face and a small pool of drool forms beneath your tongue. A patron ordered a Patron with a side of Key lime pie at A & B Lobster House. Bria Ansara watched as the man repeatedly poked the pie with his fork, thrusting it slowly in and out until the pie could take no more. Bria looked on as he grasped the girth of the shot glass and worked it until the liquid spilled out across the pie, filling every hole. “A shot of tequila dumped on Key lime pie?” she thought. “I’ve got to call Sloan.” And so it was that I had a new aspect of Key lime pie to research. Tequila usually leaves me passed out naked in a planter, but business is business. I stopped by the Key West Key Lime Pie Company and grabbed a slice to go before head-
ing to Agave 308, the tequila bar I hope never becomes overrun with tourists. Jules ordered another slice of Key lime pie to be sent down from The Rooftop Café and suggested the perfect tequila to accompany it. I poked the holes. I poured the shot. I took a bite. This was a tasty fucking dessert. Now it just needed a name. Key Lime Pie Shots? No. Pietron? Stupid. Tequilime Pie? That’s it! It was an amazing moment in Key West history. Before long you’ll probably be reading about this shit in Southern Living, but for now, you can be a part of history by heading to Agave 308 and sampling this delicacy yourself. If you see me there, feel free to buy a cookbook. Or buy me a Tequilime Pie. I’ll be the naked guy passed out in the planter. Like I said before, “You’re welcome.”
Love & Limes.

HOW TO
DRINKING BOOZE (and Get Paid to Drink...)
by Bill Hoebee
Our esteemed publisher Larry BarTab asked me to write something about myself that people don’t know. I thought, “This is easy, I’ll tell ‘em about my insane fascination with the morbidly obese fart machines on the show, ‘Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo’, or my Mrs. Santa Clause fetish.” But he said tell ‘em what it’s like to host a TV show, or more importantly how they can too. Hi, I’m Hoebee & I host a show about drinking called Club Hour. It’s on 7 days a week at 7pm & midnight on Channel 24 Key TV. Yes, I get paid to drink, as do many people, especially bartenders & hot tourists. Let’s move on. What you might not know is I do the same thing in a bunch of other cities like New Orleans, Myrtle Beach, Atlanta, & more. That being said, any future hosts will have to have the ability to: Drink a lot (stunt drinking, as it’s known in the biz - P.S. I just made that up). Also, you’ll need C.B.C., or “Comeback Capability.” When your boss is paying you & a film crew, & feeding & housing you, generally they’re not cool with “hangover days,” just so you know. You’ll also need to possess the “skill” to trick people into “being themselves” when interviewing them. It will amaze you at first that usually the least likely interview will be most

natural. It’s not like we’re filming Ocean’s Eleven here - but you gotta at least try to help people who freeze when the camera turns on. Try this. Prospective drinking show host: Tell the camera guys to only turn on lights to adjust them - when actually they’re on the whole time, & ask your questions without the subject thinking the camera’s on, Ta da! Be able to get along with people or they could make you look worse than you already do. When dealing with a camera guy or “shooters” & director/producers, always be on time & remember it’s a show about drinking, not CSI New York. Listen to their ideas; they’ve shot a lot more shows than you. If you choose to take my job, be confident in knowing that all the people in this company (yes, I said all, & for once I’m not even kissing ass) are truly fun & professional, a rare combination in a field of egos.)

Now that I’ve taught you some of the “job” requirements, it’s time to secure your first job. Before I got my first drinking show job (this one), I worked on MTV, the Travel Channel, ESPN Outdoors, & many others before I was ready to fulfill my destiny. So, perhaps try to get a job hosting any shitty TV show. Because before you can do it drunk, you have to have some grasp on what’s really happening. I’m just kidding; anybody could do my job if & only if 26 kwBarTab.com
they can a.) string a legible sentence together while hammered, b.) not lose their shit when drinking, & c.) always take a cab. Always. Important warning: People who watch your show will challenge you to various drinking challenges when filming on location - only do one per filming (I often shoot 3 or 4 per night) so you don’t look like a dickhead for always saying on TV, “My high school guidance counselor told me I should get a job & get paid to drink,” even though he was being sarcastic. I recently was reunited with him & said, “Suck it, I DID.” I hope I’ve been able to jumpstart your drinking show host career. So if you end up taking my job - the owner of this conglomerate of TV stations is named Toni, & she’s one of the coolest ladies on earth, & lets you just have fun for work, as long as it’s good. Kim & Marjorie & Margit Bisztray & all my co-hosts are true pros, so you’ll enjoy working with them & their expert camera crews. So enjoy, but remember, if you have this job, it means I don’t, so... sleep with one eye open. As a matter of fact, get your own fuckin’ drinking show- this one’s mine!
Here’s a quote from me, & it’s the truth from Toni Davis, owner of Key TV & Destination Network about how I really got my job: “Hoebee has always made me laugh. I had been driving around the Keys laughing at Hoebee on the radio for years before I met him. He made me laugh in person, too - & not just because he looks funny (although he does look kinda funny). The first time we aimed a camera at him, it was like he was born to be on TV. We were screaming with laughter in the edit booth. Of course, a great deal of the things that made us shriek with laughter would have landed us in jail if we had actually put it on the air, but we knew we had something special. It’s been a blast - & there are a few things we learned about Bill Hoebee really fast. He’s not just funny. He’s professional, prepared, & generous - he shares the spotlight with his co-hosts like a true gentleman - he makes sure the camera crew is respected & cared for & he never fails to deliver. Hoebee is gentle, downright gracious & polite when he should be outrageous & crazy when it suits. We love him, & we are so happy to have him on our Key TV & Destination Network team.” Bill Hoebee is on weekdays 2-7pm on the Florida Keys #1 radio show, “Hoebee in the Afternoon” on SUN 99.5 FM & also the host of Keys TV’s Club Hour.
BT: Full name and sign? David Livingston Sloan IV. I share a birthday with the girl from Little House on the Prairie & Buddha, so that would make me a Taurus. BT: Where are you originally from? D: Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania & raised in Dallas, Texas. You know what they say about Texas? BT: How did you end up in Key West? D: My first visit was in 1988. I was arrested for underage drinking within 10 minutes of arriving. I relocated in 1996. BT: Briefly tell us about your rise to become the Key Lime Pie guru of Key West. D: I was a baker at 16 & I dig odd history. The two came together when I was researching the paranormal at the Curry Mansion. I guess you could say ghosts lead to a life of pie. It’s pretty common I imagine. I hear they made a movie about it. The Great American Pie Festival billed me as ‘The World’s Foremost Expert On Key Lime Pie.’ That was flattering. BT: People’s biggest misconception about Key Lime pie? D: The whole debate about crust and topping. It’s pie. Eat it how you like it. BT: If you had a band in high school, what would you name it? D: Lady Gaga. The royalties from confusion alone would support my habits. BT: Where would you like to go that you haven’t been? D: I’d like to hit Vietnam and Cambodia. A trip around
Mars would be great too, but at least in Vietnam and Cambodia you don’t have to drink your own urine.
BT: Where is your favorite place that you’ve been? D: I’m partial to Stock Island. Bhutan was pretty cool too. BT: If you could own an exotic pet, what would it be? D: I almost bought a weird zoo with misfit animals. It would have to be something soft that stuck to my sleep schedule, and didn’t poop on me. Something my bird couldn’t eat too. Maybe a dog. BT: What’s the best part about being an author? D: You can fuck off for months at a time and people think you are writing a book. BT: Paper, rock & scissors? D: Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock. BT: How can people get the Key Lime Pie Cookbook? D: Restaurant Store, Island Books, Margaritaville, Green Parrot, on Amazon.com. kwBarTab.com

BT: What bars could we find you getting hammered at? J: Probably at the Tarpon or maybe Finnegan’s, Jack Flats. Sometimes I’m feeling Duval Street. BT: So what do you serve most at Solo? J: Our cucumber cocktail is the most popular. It’s fresh cucumber & basil muddled with sugar & lemon juice with organic cucumber vodka, soda water. BT: What is your full name, age & sign? Jessica Nicole Windon-Gemmell. I’m 29 & I’m a Scorpio. BT: From, years in Key West? J: I grew up in Maryland & 2 years in Key West. BT: What made you decide to pick up & move? J: Just something I had to do before I got too old. [laughs] BT: What was your first job ever? J: I worked at a tanning salon. I was the check-in girl. I cleaned the beds, sold you lotion. I did not rub it on, though. That was extra. BT: What would be the name of your band in high school? J: Blondie. BT: [Laughing] Isn’t that already taken? J: Well, that would be my DJ name. I know you said band, but I had to go right for my DJ name, which is DJ Blon-D. Band? I don’t have a band name. BT: What’s your favorite day of the week? J: Monday. It’s my day off & I’m off on Tuesday, so I can get hammered. [laughs]
BT: Did you know Maria [owner] before working here? J: No, I didn’t. I first met her when I came in to interview. It’s only been 4 months, but I feel like I’ve known her for years. She’s awesome to work for. BT: What is worse, a fanny pack or socks & sandals? J: Socks & sandals. BT: Where would you like to go that you haven’t been? J: I want to go to Australia. I want to go see the Pink Lake in Western Australia. I just heard about it recently. It’s a must-do before I die. BT: What’s the best part about being a girl? J: You can make more money than the boys. BT: Any other general shout-outs or plugs? J: Just a shout-out to Solo. Everyone’s doing such a good job. We just opened 4 months ago & we have a great staff. Maria’s awesome. That’s it. Check out Jessi’s crafty cocktails skills every Wed-Sun night. And stop by for Solo’s, 610 Greene St, new Flirtini Friday when all martinis are half off! kwBarTab.com

BT: What’s your full name? G: The full name, that has been giving me trouble for quite a while because people are having a little bit of trouble with that German, it’s Gerd Rube. Even with the big banner on the back of my stage, I am still standing in front of it - & it’s like six foot wide - & my name is on there in big letters. They’re still asking me what’s my name. [laughs] I just point at the banner. BT: Where are you originally from? G: I’m close to the city of Stuttgart in Germany, from a small town outside of it called Schorndorf. Stuttgart is in the southwest of Germany, close to the Black Forest area. BT: When did you start playing guitar? G: That was around about when I was 12 years old, somewhere in that area. Before that, I actually started with the accordion for five years in a local German orchestra. I got my musical education there. & back when I was 12 years old, I wanted to impress the girls a little more. Rather than an accordion, I thought guitar would be a lot cooler. [laughs] & it was. BT: What are your musical influences? G: That’s a wide range that I like to listen to myself. It starts from country music over to the classic rock like Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, you name it. Like 80’s big hair rockers, that’s what I like a lot. Singer-songwriter stuff I like, so a wide variety. BT: Describe your sound in exactly 5 words. G: Ooh. [laughs] I would say American, acoustic, rock. Oh, 3 words. [laughs] 34 kwBarTab.com
BT: Can you translate that into German for us? G: Amerikaner, akustisch, rock. [laughs] BT: What are you doing when you’re not strumming a gee-tar? G: Then I’m doing the interviews. [laughs] I ride my 1970 Harley Davidson motorcycle. It’s an old classic one, a Shovelhead. I play tennis. I play soccer. I watch local football team here in Key West. I go to the beaches, enjoy mother nature. That’s pretty much it. BT: Do you have any other shout-outs, secrets you want to share with us? Shameless plugs? G: Ooh, secrets. [laughs] No.The secrets are secrets. I don’t want to share any secrets. So what else? BT: Do you have any music or new songs coming out? G: I’m quite excited that I wrote a couple of new songs. & I’m coming up with a new album, hopefully, by fall this year. Check out Gerd Rube playing your favorite Classic Rock & Sing-a-long drunken tunes at Willie T’s, 525 Duval St Thurs & Sun @ 8pm, Fri @ 9pm

BT: If you could own an exotic pet, what would it be? K: An iguana or a Komodo dragon, with a spiked collar. That’d be awesome. BT: Paper, rock or scissors? K: Always scissors. BT: How about 3 favorite Key West bars. K: Finnegan’s Wake, Rumor & the Green Parrot. BT: Full name, age & sign? Kasandra Pelletier, I am 24 & I am a Virgo. BT: When did you move to Key West? K: Roughly 2 years ago. BT: Where are you from? K: I’m originally from Boca Raton, Florida, but spent a lot of time in Georgia. BT: What was your first job ever? K: I sold shoes at a shoe store in Boca Raton when I was 15. It was horrible. BT: Tell us a bit about what’s going on at Amigos. K: Well, I am the late-night queen. I run Amigos between 10pm & 4am. We serve food for our service-industry members who are hungry & don’t want Denny’s. [laughs] BT: What’s your craziest late night Amigos story? K: Probably the night our front gate was stolen. They started walking down the street with it & I had a couple of the Rick’s crew help me get it back. This was about 4:30 in the morning a couple of months ago. 36 kwBarTab.com
BT: If someone’s gonna buy you a drink, they should buy? K: Fireball or a Jägermeister. [laughs] I don’t usually drink mixed drinks, just shots & beer. BT: Is there anything, perhaps secretly, that you are the best at? K: Taking care of my locals on a late night. I shoo away unwanted people. BT: What should they order late-night? K: Carnitas over tater tots. BT: What do you miss most about the mainland? K: Bonfires, department stores & lots of fast food. Taco Bell. [laughs] BT: Describe your service style in 5 words. K: I am sarcastic & entertaining. BT: Can you say that in Spanish? K: Absolutely not. [laughs] BT: Any other shout-outs or plugs? K: I just want to say I love you to my Key West family. Drunk & hungry? Go see Kasandra at Amigos, 425 Greene St, Fri & Sat nights till 6am!
