House Hunting in Key West — by Leigh Pujado

L

et me guess, you arrived here much as I did: Wide-eyed & ready for the island party life.

Those first few days on island were magical; meeting funky Key West characters, tossing back ice cold beer in the middle of the day, reading about Hemingway & Flagler & Harry S. Truman, & snapping photos of every rooster you encountered between Margaret & Whitehead Streets. Postcards to your friends back home said things like, “Would you believe they watch the sunset here every night?” & “This place is so awesome, I could live here forever!” Between happy hours, you filled out a few job applications. You were willing to take any silly job as long as it didn’t require you wear a suit or carry much responsibility, but first you needed to find a place to live. That was when you discovered our island’s dirty little secret… Apartment hunting in Key West is a lot like panning for diamonds in a litter box. There are just not a lot of clean, reasonably priced & livable apartments on the market, & what is available between Craigslist & the classifieds falls into three categories: 18 BarTabMag.com

1. Scary, rundown hovels with leaky faucets, Brady Bunch era kitchens & warped floors, 2. Rooms for rent in houses occupied by a bunch of grown-ups well past college roommate age, &

3. Tastefully updated luxury units that barely anyone can afford. Most transplants here suffer a short period of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder after viewing their first few rentals. It’s extremely sobering to go from affordable Mid-Western $800/ month two bedroom-two bath with covered parking to the sticker-shocking $1700/month “Island” studio shack carved out of an old wooden home that miraculously has not been condemned & includes free termites & the noncaved-in half of a patio. [This aforementioned apartment would be advertised as “Charming studio in historic district with shared outdoor deck.”] My first KW apartment hunting was in the summer of 1999 & as far as transplants go, I was as green & naive as one could be. Back then, the old Waterfront Market bulletin board was THE place to find housing & I read every ad on that board with high hopes & an open mind. The only places in my price range were

— Your First Island Hangover “ROOMMATE WANTED” ads & even though I was accustomed to having my own place, I was so head over heels for this island that I was willing to try the roommate thing. What struck me as odd, even odder than so many adults shacking up like college bunkies, were the tag lines at the end of many of the ads: “Quiet, working, sober person only.” “Must have job & references.” “No drama queens/No druggies/No drunks.” As a fresh arrival from Nebraska, I found such stipulations amusing & strange. Since I had never noticed any “SEEKING RENTAL” ads that stated, “Stinky, unemployed drummer seeks room to rent in which to rehearse & smoke crack,” I thought the tag line was a bit excessive. Little did I know the rental pool here was teaming with so many unfavorable housemates & from that fateful Waterfront Market bulletin board I pulled my first three leads for “ROOMMATE WANTED.” My first stop was a scary little cottage in Bahama Village that looked like it was right out of the set of a Tim Burton movie. Every angle of the house was askew as its foundation was clearly sinking, causing the house to tilt to the left. None of the doors closed all way & slanted floors gave it a haunted house feel. A truly kind looking man, not at all like Edward Scissorhands, eagerly ushered me through the door to show me the home he shared with two extremely untidy adults. The roommates was friendly & acted excited at the prospect of me joining their commune. A male roommate announced that he was gay & I wouldn’t have to worry about him hitting on me. The female roommate offered me a hit off of her joint. The guy roommate who had answered the door explained that they each took a turn once a week cleaning the kitchen. I looked 19

at the sea of dirty dishes in the antiquated sink & attempted to hide my nausea. I couldn’t get out of there fast enough, but not wanting to hurt anyone’s feelings, I endured the tour of what could have been my bedroom. It featured a window view of the garbage cans & carpet smelling faintly of sour milk & wet dog. Immediately upon leaving that scary cottage, I drank three beers in less than 15 minutes at the Green Parrot. I had two more places to see that day & after the last place, I wasn’t sure I could handle it. Stop #2 was a cement block home in midtown. The roommates there were all 30-something males who I imagine played a lot of Dungeons & Dragons back in high school as they were using the backyard to practice their stage fighting tactics. The living room was decorated in swords & medieval style sculptures & I’m pretty sure I was the only girl who had ever set foot in their home. The resident warriors proudly showed me their outdoor shower which they had built themselves. This feature may have been more impressive had it not been overshadowed by the fact that the indoor bathroom had severe plumbing issues which the landlord had failed to address, so they had simply moved operations outdoors. I told the guys they seemed really nice [which was true], & that they had a lovely home [which was total BS] but that I felt more comfortable with female roommates [which would turn out to totally NOT be true]. Stop #3 was a two story, four bedroom, patchouli 20 BarTabMag.com

scented Victorian on Olivia Street. I was greeted at the door by a female roommate who was nursing her baby. Overwhelmed with discomfort, I was unnerved by her answering the door while nursing & the knowledge that if I lived there I’d have to live with a baby! She led me up a gorgeous old staircase & gave me a tour of all the rooms. Each one had a mattress on the floor & piles of dirty clothes. The bathroom was filthy & it seemed there was no kitchen, only a large refrigerator in the foyer. There were so many cats & dogs running around that I never actually got a precise count. The female roommate was still nursing that baby when I ran out the front door shouting, “I’ll have to think about it.” Back at The Green Parrot, I realized I was going to have to raise my price range or severely lower my standards. Over the years, I have paid a lot of money to live with some unsavory people & several people have paid a lot of money to live under the same roof with my shenanigans as well! 15 years later, the affordable housing situation here has only gotten worse. At least in 1999 when I was touring what seemed like every dirty, island hippie commune in town, there were plenty of dirty, island hippie communes available to rent. These days, the pickings are mighty slim. If you are lucky enough to find a decent place to live in Key West, well then, you are lucky enough. & if you are stuck in the trenches of island apartment hunting, happy hunting & don’t forget your pooper scooper. email: cleighpujado@gmail.com

HANGOVER HOROSCOPES with The Mystical Sloan controversial new study has found there is no cure for hangovers. The study’s lead scientist, Dr. Christopher Shultz suggests disreputable companies peddling hangover survival guides promising relief that does not exist have hornswoggled a population seeking instant gratification. Dr. Shultz went on to suggest that those who imbibe stop wasting time on prevention or cures and focus instead on quality hangover activities based on zodialogical indicators. BarTab consulted world famous mystic, David Livingston Sloan The 4th, for horoscolopical advice:

A

ARIES March 21 - April 19 You are a fine drinking companion, dear Aries, but keep to yourself in the morning to shield your selfish ways from society. Consider solo daredevil activities such as naked parasailing. Helpful mantra: The world is not my ashtray. TAURUS April 20 - May 20 Your warm-hearted-drunken-bullnature breeds a greedy hangover cow. Stromboli or Pad Thai make a great breakfast treat. Warm your mind with 27 episodes of Law & Order. Resist that Taurus urge to play with your own butthole. GEMINI May 21 - June 21 Though adaptable & eloquent at the bar, hangovers are particularly rough for you, Gemini. Your hangover is best spent with a companion willing to serve your every need, but that will never happen until 24 BarTabMag.com

you admit your diarrhea rattles the medicine cabinet to a degree that causes both laughter & concern. CANCER June 22 - July 22 Beware, as the wooden hammer of daylight cracks your hangover shell. Your touchy, feely displays of emotion are the same behaviors included in the ‘warning signs’ section of most victims’ rights pamphlets. Find a place without mirrors to cry alone or go to the petting zoo & share your feelings with goats & emu. Do not send that text message. Seriously. LEO July 23 – August 22 Confucius once said, “People don’t like hanging around assholes.” This leaves you with two hangover choices Leo: 1) Obey all restraining orders, stay inside & don’t call, text, or e-mail anyone, or 2) Drink a bottle of Fireball & hit the beach.

VIRGO August 28 - September 22 Your hangover would be much better if you didn’t scream your pet’s name every 12 minutes to make sure it is still alive. You are awesome Virgo. Stop worrying. You are not going to die alone. Take a few Valium & read a book by the pool. Stay away from the deep end. LIBRA Sept 23 - Oct 22 Easygoing & sociable at the bar, the Libra awakes indecisive & selfindulgent. Milk your hangover, but pay close attention to your receipts. Toss a salad & slather your body in Ranch dressing. Watch for subliminal messages. SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 Though you are exciting & magnetic at the bar, Scorpios become secretive & resentful the morning after. An oversized pair of sunglasses will conceal your identity & the bags under your eyes. Start your day in a dark place, such as a back row of the Tropic Cinema, but resist that urge to masturbate until you return home. SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 – Dec 21 You’ve been doing the diarrhea dance at the local diner long enough. Your friend’s expect it, but consider giving them a break by having your hangover breakfast at home & meeting them for a late lunch after your storm clouds have subsided.

CAPRICORN Dec 22 - Jan 19 There was only room to cover 11 signs in this article, so we decided to fuck over the Capricorns. Feel free to read ‘Sagittarius’ & pretend it applies to you. Aren’t you a little old to believe in horoscopes? AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18 It’s not nice to invite someone swimming, then pee in the pool, but perverse unpredictability is your hangover nature. The day after drinking is a good time to check out those movie booths you’ve always wondered about in the back of the adult bookstore. Wear a pair of close-toed shoes. PISCES February 20 - March 20 Though you appreciate good company as you nurse your hangover from the comfort of an air-conditioned restaurant, no one likes hanging out with a hung-over Pisces. Arts & crafts or masturbation are your only options. David L. Sloan is the author or co-author of a dozen books including The Hangover Survival Guide. Collect all locally or from Amazon.com.

‘Tito’ Beveridge from Tito’s Vodka by Larry BarTab

BT: For the record, what's your full name? Tito: Bert ‘Bertito’ Butler Beveridge, II. BT: How did you get the nickname, ‘Bertito?’ Tito: I'm named after my granddad. My mom said Bert was so grown up sounding, that she couldn’t call me Bert when I was a little baby. So she just called me ‘Tito.’ BT: You’ve been a mortgage broker, a geologist, and in the oil business. How did you end up in the vodka? Tito: I started off making flavored vodkas for my friends for Christmas presents. Then I was looking for a career change & I saw this guy on TV who said, if you’re trying to find your passion, then make a list of what you love to do and what you’re good at’. So I made a list of what I loved to do & what I was good at, & it basically involved drinking & girls [laughter]. & so I ended up in the vodka business. BT: When did you distill your own vodka? Tito: After I made my list--you know, what I loved doing, what I was good at-- I went down to the liquor store. This was like '93, '94. I went to some liquor stores, they're like, “I'm going to shoot the next guy with a flavored vodka that comes BarTabMag.com

27

in here.” I was really dead set on this liquor business. Then, one of the guys at a liquor store was like, if you're going to get into it, don't do the flavors, but regular vodka, that's a good category. & then he was showing me all the regular, but he was like, man, there's already 90 regular vodkas. You're just going to get creamed. & these guys have all these billions of dollars. So I ended up just going & building a little 16-gallon still, & a little copper condensing coil on it. & I started just brewing beer in 6-gallon carboys. You know, those water jugs at your office? I'd brew beer in those, pour them in the 16-gallon still, click it off. BT: Do you remember what happened to that 16-gallon? Tito: Oh, the first batch I made was horrible [laughter]. It was terrible. & then I just had to learn what I did wrong. & I'd call up professors at University of Texas & I'm like, man, I did this & I did that. & they're like, well, I don't know, but my buddy, Ralph, over here, he does a lot of that. Let me give you his number. & then I'd go & I'd talk to somebody else. They'd go, look, man, I think this is what you're doing. You've got to go & do this, do that. & I was like, okay, I get it. So, I just kind of learned the hard way. BT: When did you first get it down pat, when did it started becoming Tito's? Tito: It took me about six, seven months to start narrowing it in. & then I kept working on it -- I'm still always trying stuff, but I think it took about two years. I was always taking two bottles to a party. & I'd tell people to, ‘Put your initials on which one you like the 28

best.’ & then everybody would try one & try the other one. They'd put their initials on the label they liked most. & I finally got to where if I distilled it six times & distilled it seven times, they couldn't tell the difference. They were like, ‘Now you're just trying to trick us. That's the same stuff.’ But if I did it five times & six times, then they'd always pick the six one. So I'd just do stuff like that. BT: Did you ever have a name other than Tito's? Tito: Yeah. I was going to do ‘Kind & Cruel Vodka’ for a while. & Cruel was going to be the really hot one. Those were the finalists. I had about eight of ‘em. But everybody finally convinced me that just do my name. There's no real Johnny or Jim or Jack or Jose. So they’re like, ‘Just put your name on it.’ & then some bartender will think it's really cool that they're meeting Tito, since they can't meet Johnny Walker or Jack Daniels. But they can meet Tito. & I'm like ‘Oh, man, nobody's going to give a shit.’ Then here it is, 20 year later & I go into a bar, & they’re like, ‘No, you're the real Tito? You're the Tito?’ BT: Who would you most like to have a Tito's with, living or dead? Tito: Wow, living or dead. You know, Jesus Christ. [laughs] Jesus Christ would be awesome [laughter]. Tito’s Vodka is available all over Key West. Try it on the rocks and see for yourself what a clean, great tasting vodka Tito & his crew have been making for nearly 20 years. BT: Where have you played in Key West? L: Hogfish, Hog’s Breath, Blue Heaven, Salute!, Smokin’ Tuna. It’s pretty much it, for consistent stuff. BT: How about musical influences? L: A big one would be Ani DiFranco. But other than that, a lot of the music from the ‘60s, like Jethro Tull & Joni Mitchell, great songwriters like that. I’d say those were my main influences.

BarTab Bar Chord

Leah Orlikowski

BT: Full name, originally from? L: My full name is Leah Marie Orlikowski. I’m from Colorado, a small town outside of Denver called Conifer. BT: How did you get into music? L: I’ve always been surrounded by music. My dad was a musician, & literally, in the crib-- my parents would go to the bar. My dad would be playing. They’d put me under the table in a smoky-ass bar. So yeah, my dad’s a lover of music. BT: How long have you been in the Key West music scene? L: Seven years, coming & going, just for the winter season. This is my first year around. BT: Where are some of the places you have played in the past? L: One of the places was Put-In-Bay, Ohio. They call it the Key West of the Midwest. It’s a little island in Lake Erie. I would usually go there for the summertime & do gigs all summer & then come back here.

BT: What would happen if you covered “Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield? L: [chuckles] What would happen? I don’t know. I guess people would probably laugh pretty hard if I tried to do that. I’d try & do my own twist on it, though. BT: Do you go out & listen to music? L: Oh, definitely. I love seeing Jeff Clark. & Topher James & Carrie are really good. I like to wander around & just see what other people are doing. There’s a lot of talent in Key West. BT: Any upcoming, noteworthy projects? L: Not as of yet. I was considering putting on some tap shoes & maybe incorporating some tap dancing in my show. [laughs] BT: Do you have any other shout-outs, secrets you want to share, or shameless self plugs? L: Well, if you want to hear my pirate mouth come out, come to my show & feed me some tequila. & you just never know what’s going to come out. See Leah Tuesdays 4-7pm at Salute! on the Beach 1000 Atlantic Blvd. BarTab.com Mag 31

BT: Have you ever won an award that you’re proud of? For pinewood derby racing, or anything? J: I did get Employee of the Month when I worked at The Cheesecake Factory when I was in college.

BT: You work at 2 New England Bars, The Lazy Gecko & Island Dogs? Was that planned out? J: Lucky coincidence, actually.

BT: Any other shout-outs or plugs? J: To the Dante’s crew, to Gecko crew, & Island Dogs crew.

BT: What country that you had the best food? M: I’d say Italy, because it’s part of my nature. But Thailand was pretty special. Thailand was absolutely amazing as far as food went. & I learned an amazing amount in Thailand. But I still love going to Italy. I go all the time. I hit the markets. You can smell the fresh cantaloupe three blocks away from the market. Tomatoes, you can smell them like a half a mile away.

Michael Mosi @

BT: Favorite part of Italy? M: I haven’t been to Sicily yet. I’m sure I’d love it, but I’d have to say Tuscany right now.

BT: Full name, originally from? Micheal William Mosi, Pittsburgh, PA.

BT: What do you most look forward to on a day off, when it happens? M: [laughter] Spontaneity. I never make plans for days off. I plan on sleeping in. I do my laundry the night before, & whatever happens, it happens.

Azur / / 425 Grinnell

BT: How long has Azur been open? M: We’ve been at this seven years in this location. BT: Tell us a little about your culinary knowledge. M: I’ve spent all my life dedicated to culinary knowledge. I lived in Santa Fe when American Southwest & regional food was really hot. & I lived in New York, in DC, in Connecticut & all around the East Coast. Then I traveled. I was in Switzerland for school, Germany, Italy & France for work. South Africa, Thailand, Greece. I came back to the States for a wedding & drove down here & met somebody I knew from New York. And I haven’t left. BT: How old were you when you realized that cooking was your passion? M: 17. I wasn’t going to college, & I wasn’t going to cut it as a musician, but I was really good at cooking. But I actually ended up going to college five years later. 36 BarTabMag.com

BT: The best part about being a chef-owner? M: Being able to do whatever you want, whenever you want in the kitchen, buy whatever you want, cook whatever you want, control your own destiny & watch the result of it. That’s the other part about being a chef-owner that’s not my favorite part is, if you want to be able to build a business on reputation & consistency, you’ve got to cook it. You’ve got to do it. & so does Drew [co-owner]. We both love cooking, but there’s always so much more we want to do. But it’s hard to let other people take over. & when you do, you’ve really got to be on top of it. Azur is open for breakfast 8-11am, lunch 11am-3pm & dinner 6-10pm at 425 Grinnell, (305) 292-2987.

1. Each team sets up 26 cups of water. 2. Everyone drinks 13 cups and wonders if this is REALLY how much water the Mayo Clinic says you should drink in a day, because it seems like a lot. 3. It is. 50 BarTabMag.com

Hangovers- for fun & profit by Bill Hoebee I can only tell you of my hangovers because, frankly, when I’m hung-over I really don’t give a fuck about anyone else’s. But…there is a certain satisfaction in being around other hungover people that you got jacked with the night before. Especially if you work with them. Except for the exceptionally long wait at the bathroom, it’s usually fun to see how other people deal with hangoverseverybody’s different. There’s the “hair of the dog” folks who start drinking again in the morning, subscribing to the old adage “I’m going to have a hangover eventually, but it doesn’t have to be today!” Imagine the million or so people out here on small planes with no bathrooms or drinks, it sucks, I know. By the way, does anybody know where the phrase “hair of the dog” came from? Was eating dog hair a cure for hangovers during the dark ages? I don’t know, I’ve never eaten dog hair. I was tempted once but decided the better way was to sleep on my friends mold filled basement couch for a day. The mold did the trick but I had a facial tick for a couple days- it was a lot more

fun than it sounds… Then there are the old wives tales, family traditions and stuff I read on the Internet that cures hangovers. I read that supposedly the chemicals used in making Sprite soda are a miracle cure- results. FYI didn’t work for me. Chicken soup and Coffee- nope. Greasy pizza or burger and aspirin? I wish. Then they started making a hangover cure that tasted like electricity and swamp water. Unfortunately for it to supposedly work you have to drink 2 of the 5 hour energy sized containers- one when you start drinking and one before you go to bed.

I believe the problem with this cure is that the 2nd bottle wasn’t worn as a necklace hanging around my neck!

Needless to say I never remembered to drink the 2nd one. Also this little concoction led to in inordinate amount of, lets call it “brown heat”. If you’re picking up what I’m putting down… So… I really don’t know if that one works. It was called No-No for some reason. There was BarTab.com Mag 55

one I tried through a promotion at my radio station that actually worked. No, I don’t have any. It’s called “Restore & Renew”. You take 2 blue pills before drinking and 2 when you wake up. It actually made me feel a lot better fairly quickly. It would have been a monster power club hangover, which by the way are world class. But of the virtually hundreds of hangover cures I’ve heard of or tried, at the end of the day, the only real cure is prevention, AKA don’t drink #2, 3, 4…right, like that’s gonna happen. FYI- I am the host of a TV show about drinking called ‘Club Hour’ in beach cities all over the Southeast- I get paid to have hangovers. If you have aspirations to take over my drinking show- good news- I’ve been doing it for 7 years so my liver is probably going to explode soon. Good luck! Bill Hoebee is on weekdays 2-7pm on the Florida Keys #1 radio show, “Hoebee in the Afternoon” on SUN 99.5 FM & also the host of Keys TV’s Club Hour. 56
