“Don’t bother with churches, government buildings or city squares. If you want to know about a culture, spend a night in its bars.” – Ernest Miller Hemingway

by David L. Sloan I took my first trip from Key West to Cuba in 1999 with whisky on my brain and Ernest on my mind. The next 24 hours included 4 beers, 6 mojitos, 4 Papa Dobles, 3 Cuba Libres, 8 Cristals, 3 Bucaneros, 2 peso pizzas and 1 very intense hit of acid. Not necessarily the trip I had in mind, but it didn’t matter. Every single cocktail was consumed somewhere Hemingway used to drink, and I had unintentionally invented the Key West–Havana Hemingway Pub Crawl. Here’s how to do it if you want to follow in Papa’s footsteps.

Start at Sloppy Joe’s Bar, 201 Duval Street, Key West Ernest didn’t hang out here much when it was a furniture store, but became a regular when Joe Russell bought it and the booze started flowing. Several characters from Papa’s books were inspired by bar patrons. They say Hemingway left a lot of his work here when he headed to Cuba. I believe he got drunk and forgot it. You’ll do the same with your phone soon. Stick with beer here. You still have to clear customs. Papa’s Wisdom: “I have drunk since I was fifteen and few things have given me more pleasure.”

Stroll to Captain Tony’s Saloon, 428 Greene Street, Key West: Hemingway drank here from 1933-1937. The bar belonged to his friend Joe “Sloppy Joe” Russell. The building’s owner decided to raise Joe’s rent by a dollar per week. Russell told him to fuck off and moved across the street. They never stopped drinking. You shouldn’t either. Drink Ale. Papa’s Wisdom: “Bob Benchley first introduced me to Ballantine Ale. It has been a good companion ever since.” Fly to La Terraza Calle 152 #161, Cojimar Welcome to Cuba. Double down with a local beer chased 19

by a mojito at the bar where Ernest docked the Pilar and found inspiration for The Old Man and the Sea. This is the place to drink like a fish. If you want to add a bonus stop, go to Finca Vigia. Hemingway lived here. We brought our own beer and drank it by one of his trees. Papa’s Wisdom: I wanted to try a new drink. That’s all we do, isn’t it – look at things and try new drinks? Taxi to El Floridita Calle Obispo #557 esq. a Monserrate They say Hemingway invented the daiquiri here and holds the drinking record of 16 with double rum. The Papa Doble contains white rum, lime juice, grapefruit juice and maraschino. Ernest was diabetic, so he skipped the sugar. You are probably on the same path, but go ahead and drink to your health while you have it. Papa’s Wisdom:“They had no taste of alcohol and felt, as you drank them, the way downhill glacier skiing feels running through powder snow.” 20

BarTabMag.com

Figure a way to La Bodeguita del Medio Calle Empedrado at Calle Cuba, Havana Hemingway is one of millions of names scrawled on the melting walls of this bar that opened for business in 1942. It claims to be the birthplace of the mojito, and though that claim is often contested, the place feels like a Hemingway watering hole and the drinks won’t disappoint. Scout the bathroom before you order. You’re probably going to puke soon. Papa’s Wisdom: “My mojito in La Bodeguita, my daiquiri in El Floridita.” Crawl to Dos Hermanos Avenida del Puerto 304, Havana I’ve heard a 2009 renovation sucked the life out of this former Hemingway drinking hole, but you can liven things up by ordering a Cuba Libre and challenging the biggest man in the room to an arm wrestling competition. Papa’s Wisdom: “An intelligent man is sometimes forced to be drunk to spend time with his fools.”

Suddenly Appear at the Hotel Ambos Mundos 153 Obispo, Havana Hemingway made a home of room 511 at The Hotel Ambos Mundos from 1932 to 1939. He paid less for the room each night ($1.50) than you will pay for your first drink at the lobby bar, but the rum mixed with the acid and ambiance will have you convinced ol’ Ernest is about to stumble into the lobby and grab a seat next to you on the couch. Congratulations. You’ve completed the Key West – Havana Hemingway Pub Crawl. Papa’s Wisdom: Death is like an old whore in a bar. I’ll buy her a drink, but I won’t go upstairs with her.” David L. Sloan is the co-author of The Havana Bucket List: 100 ways to experience the magic of Cuba’s capital city. Buy it at the Key West Airport or on Amazon.com.

Caribe [of Key West] @ Virgilio’s Duval St 524

BarTab sat down with Rolando Rojas, guitarist & lead vocals for Caribe this issue for the Bar Chord profile. How did Caribe form?

Caribe was started in ‘89. They were a 12 or 13 piece band from the Navy. That band had Jose Rodriguez, who is still playing with [Rolando], Dave Parker & Roy Chavez. I was the new guy in ‘93. Then we went down to 6 or 7 members. Everything’s changing here, we decided to work more, but we couldn’t be a 6, 7 piece band, so we downsized it. Now we’re 3 or 4 guys on the stage, but we’re still 6 or 7 people in the band. We just rotate so the music keeps going all the time.

Does Caribe write their own music or just play Latin classics?

We do a lot of covers from everywhere. From music from the 1930’s to the newest ones they’re playing now on the radio. But we do have originals. We did an album with half originals, half covers. We learn new songs & we do our own – everything we do is our own arrangements. We don’t copy anything. We just get idea & do it our way.

What word best describes what you do – rumba or danzon?

We do rumba, a lot of rumba. Rumba became the way salsa now, the pop music with salsa.

30

BarTabMag.com

Caribe - Rolando Rojas, Dave Parker, Jose Rodriguez

How do you describe your music?

We just say Caribbean, Latin music. It’s kind of hard because we go all the way from songs from Chile, in our style. Dancing music. & that’s the songs nobody plays. With old Cumbia from Chile or Peru. It’s Latin music. I can say the rhythm is Caribbean – Puerto Rican, Cuban, or Dominican. We do a lot of merengue from the Dominican Republic, too.

What’s your most requested song?

It depends what group we’re playing to. The Cuban guys, they want to hear “Guantanamera.” The Americans ask for ‘Chan Chan’ by the Buena Vista Social Club from Cuba. Then we got the Columbians, they’ve got a Cumbia, which is the main Cumbia, like “Guantanamera” is for the Cubans, called “La Pollera Colora.” It’s a great song. It’s about a girl in a red shirt dancing Cumbia. See Caribe every Thursday at Vigilio’s, 524 Duval St for their Latin Night. Contact them at www.CaribeOfKeyWest.com

Full name, originally from?

Nicholas Brohm Doll. From Louisville, KY. What brought you to Key West?

My family had been coming down here for a while. They basically figured that I would fit in down here & that I should try it out. Nikon or Canon?

I started with Canon, because that’s the film camera my parents had that I used back in the day. When I switched to what I thought was a better camera in the film era, I got a deal on a Nikon. It was automated & battery-powered, as opposed to wind up. Then years later I switched to digital SLR. I already had a couple lenses, so I didn’t want to rejump ship, so I just stuck with Nikon. How did you get in photography?

Nick Doll @ NickDollP hotography.com 34

BarTabMag.com

I started shooting my friend’s band when I was under age, because I was too young to get into the bar. I love music & it was the only way I could go see their shows. I didn’t look old enough, didn’t have a fake ID. When I went to the door, the door guy was like, ‘Oh, you’re the photographer. Come on in.’ A light bulb went off & I figured out how to get into clubs under age. [laughs]

Do you remember what the first gig was?

Yeah. It was at a club called The Indigo Room in Fort Myers, Florida for my friend’s band. They were called Simply Smut. What inspired you to start shooting full-time?

I avoided it a long time because I didn’t want to ruin something that I had a lot of fun doing. But after a while, I realized I’d rather be doing this than anything else. I would rather make money doing photography than doing the things I had to before to make money. What was your most memorable gig?

Probably shooting with Mike Marrero for the TDC, who does the advertising for the Florida Keys. We put together a huge shoot that ends up being used in advertisements for Key West. Any awkward moments while you were working?

One time in the bridal suite before shooting a wedding, the bride was completely topless & just not caring that I was there shooting everything. I didn’t know whether or not to turn my head & she’s like, ‘Oh no. It’s fine. You can shoot whatever you want.’

What projects are you currently working on?

I’m doing a project called Free the Nipple campaign [#freethenipplekeywest]. So, basically shooting a bunch of nipples. As self-proclaimed taco expert, what are your 3 favorite tacos on the island?

I would say hard shell tacos at the Lazy Gecko, Garbo’s Grill’s Fish tacos & Agave’s roasted pork tacos.

From a photographer’s point of view, what was the most interesting part about your recent trip to Cuba?

I think seeing the veneer of a society stripped away to the point that you see the things that people really value most & hang onto. To see it out in the open, to be able to shoot that everywhere, is a huge attraction, probably for any photographer the goes there. What’s something about Cuba that you weren’t expecting?

How unfair the people have it. When people ask, ‘Was it beautiful? Or did you take a lot of photos?’, the answers to those questions are, ‘Yes, it’s beautiful. It’s definitely fun to take photos of,’ but it’s not fair to end the conversation there, & leave it be without explaining to someone about what these people go through daily. How their freedom is absolutely stripped away. We’re like, ‘I can’t wait to go see it before it changes.’ That’s valid, but they deserve so much more conversation than that. It’s clear that the country opening up only allows us to give more money to the institutions that are in control there, until we actually force them to make changes. “Cuba is like going to a whole other planet. It’s so different but it’s so similar to the United States, to Miami. It’s like a doppelgaenger. It’s the mirror image. And I have no doubt, that once Cuba becomes democratic, that it will be the favorite tourist destination for Americans”. - Henry Louis Gates photos Nick Doll NickDollPhotography.com

This is Your Brain A by Bill Hoebee

combination of things happened this week that made me nostalgic. The number one thing that struck me is that my incredibly loving and smart mother’s fight with Alzheimer’s disease finally took over and, for her safety, had to go to a “memory care” assisted living facility. Leaving my sister and I to have to clean out the house of photo albums consisting of treasured family memories. These were highly detailed and captioned books which spanned her, my dad’s, and our family and friend’s lifetimes; also of family members long before our time. Events

that my mom thought were life events with her anymore important for us to remember, without her adding details and even though now she cannot thoughts to them, yet I am still recall them herself. I’ve always happy that I still can. All the heard “at the end, all you have while, I keep in mind that her left is your memories”- this disease can be hereditary. I still disease took those memories talk to her almost everyday, from her. even though it feels that I’m really just We showed her I’ve talking to myself. many pictures and always heard Somehow just told her stories of knowing that the things that “at the end, all the person on we did together. you have left is your the other end She sometimes memories”- this smiles, but it of the phone all seems very disease took those is my mom, is new to her. all that memories from I really I’m sometimes need. My dad sad that we really her. lives with this can’t reminisce these challenge everyday,

and powerlessly watched it happen. That being said, I think it is so important to talk with him to let him know how much I love him and what a hero he is to my brother, sister, and myself. The second “thing” that happened this week was that I had to start looking for a new apartment in Key West. It was then that all the “lack of workforce housing” comments in the paper hit home. I’ve lived in the same place for 13 years, so when I was told the insane price that they were raising my rent to, I started looking for a more affordable place to live...and there was NOTHING! Well except for a few dingy, walk in closet sized places that were charging more than I am paying now. It is, to say the least, exceptionally disappointing to have the realization that I might no longer be able to live on this little island that I love so much. Having lost the majority of my photographs during the hurricane Wilma flood of 2005, I started thinking about what will I remember of my (well over) 25 years here in Key West? Of course, I had this thought while at a local bar and on the wall happened to be pictures of Key West spanning many years. It was then that it occurred to me that the look of Key West Has not changed all that much. As I looked further into the various 51

photographs on the walls I had remembered the different businesses and people whom have occupied them for these many years. I also thought of how few people are left here to talk about this with. And THAT, for me, is the real key to living in this place; the faces, the people, the givers, the takers, the angels and demons alike. I want to remember those who have passed and who have left and those who have still managed to live here. I’ll remember the plumber who came to my house on a Sunday when a pipe broke. The A/C guy who came and fixed my air conditioner at 10pm during an extreme heat spell. I’ll remember the bartender who covered my bar tab when my ex-wife decided that it would be funny to cancel my credit card, and then the cab driver that gave me a free ride home because I always tip him well. I’ll remember when my neighbor caught the 52

douche that tried breaking into my car to steal CDs that I used for work everyday, and the thief’s mother begging me not to press charges. I’ll remember the holidays with friends and neighbors, benefits for people who have lost and those whom have recovered. I want to remember the people who I have liked, loved, and of course the douche bags that I am glad that I do not have to deal with anymore. I’d love to remember my drinking buddies, fellow coworkers, beach concerts, radio and television partner and helpers. I’ll always remember the many volunteers, the disasters, the perfect days, the street performers, musicians, and people who have made a difference in my life and those who have said that I have made a difference in theirs. As time grows closer to the moment that I have to decide if I can still live on the island that I love, I think the thing I’ll remember the most is the

people. Key West is constantly changing, the people change, but after living with my mother having Alzheimer’s disease, I think the thing that I love the most is that I can still remember to love them. Workforce housing is a huge problem here in Key West. I would hope that our elected officials would find a way us “non-rich” but hard-working people can stay in Key West. No matter what happens, I will remember Key West, and all it has been for me, until I cannot remember any longer. Peace, Bill Hoebee P.S.- I’ll get back to writing crazy sarcastic columns next month. Bill Hoebee is on weekdays 2-7pm on the Florida Keys #1 radio show, ‘Hoebee in the Afternoon’ on SUN 99.5 FM & also the host of Keys TV’s Club Hour.
