Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes by Leigh Pujado

“Oh, look out you rock ‘n rollers, Pretty soon now you’re gonna get older.” - David Bowie

I

never wanted to be one of those crusty, old locals who sits around bitching about the tourists and preaching about how much better Key West was in the old days. But in spite of my best efforts otherwise, the crustiness and crankiness has crept into my psyche. It could be that I am just crabby from driving around in circles with a car full of groceries, desperately in search of a parking space near my house, or that I’m still bitter about losing the Top of La Concha to a spa two years ago. I’m definitely still pissed off that there’s a frickin’ Walgreens in the old Strand Theatre on Duval, and without even knowing why, I admittedly resent the sunburned, fanny pack and sandals crowd that clogs lower Duval in search of a Sloppy Joe’s t-shirt and a cheap buzz. Yes, I’ve unwittingly joined the conversation on the good old days. I’m now one of those people. If you feed one of us crusty locals enough beer and get us going on how awesome Key West was before the tourists and developers ruined our utopian bar-fly paradise, we’ll give you a sappy shit-show to

rival Barbara Streisand singing “The Way We Were.” We’ll get so lost in our own bullshit, lamenting the changes seen in our years here as well as the changes that happened long before our arrival, bystanders will wonder how it is possible we knew both Henry Flagler AND Jimmy Buffett. We pine for the golden years of Key We pine for with its raucous the golden years West, writer, sailor and pirate of Key West, crowds lining bar stools The Monster, The Key with its raucous at Wester, and The Sea writer, sailor Witch. It was a simpler and pirate crowds time when the streets were not clogged with lining bar stools tourists, the rents were at The Monster, dirt cheap and any Tom, Dick or Harry could seal The KeyWester, his fortune with simply and The Sea Witch. a go-fast boat and some guts. But for all our big talk, if we removed our rose colored nostalgia glasses, we might recall that our most fondly remembered island eras boasted an extremely corrupt police force, a fire chief who was convicted of drug trafficking, ridiculously frequent power outages, and an AIDS epidemic that was killing off island residents at an alarming rate. This longing for yesteryear is reminiscent of 21

white, male politicians waxing rhapsodic over “The good old 50s and 60s” when life was simpler, safer, and better, seemingly oblivious to the fact that for many, (like all women and all non-white people,) life actually sucked a whole lot more. Sure it might have been cool to have beer at The Full Moon Saloon with Tom McGuane or Hunter S. Thompson, certainly a lot cooler than, say, getting into a fist fight with a former Backstreet Boy at The Hog’s Breath. But, times change and change is inevitable. Just walk into The Green Parrot and look up at the ceiling at the graveyard of signs from island businesses past. It’s a great homage to some of our island’s history, a way to celebrate our past. What I’m trying to grapple with is this: While it is important to celebrate the past, it’s just as important to

let it go. Recently I had to let go of our historic Coffee Mill Dance Studio building. (The studio is open and has moved to Simonton Street.) Having spent so many years teaching and dancing in that beautiful building on Pohalski Lane, letting it go turned out to be a convoluted and emotional experience. Yes, I know it’s just a building, but, I loved that building. As it turns out, letting go of the past is much more difficult in practice than typing up clichés on letting go. In some ways I still haven’t let go of the little beach bar at The Reach where bartender Jan was a multi-decade fixture. I haven’t let go of the cheese counter at the old Waterfront Market. I never hung out much at Atlantic Shores or Jerky’s but every time I see a t-shirt from one of those places, I get teary

eyed. And though I never got to hear Coffee Butler play at The Hukilau, I still feel robbed of the experience. After all these years I’m still upset that Dennis Pharmacy is a bank. And if one more historic building becomes a stupid drug store, I’m going to lose my mind. But if I’m going to be really honest, I have to admit that now, in 2016 Key West, there are some things that are actually better than when I arrived here in 1999. That was back in the “Pre-Amazon Prime Era” when the only places we had to shop were “JC Penny,” “Uptons,” “Sears” and this shitty little building supply store called “Scottie’s.” Back then, there was no USPS Click-n-Ship. If you wanted to mail a package, you had to take a half a day off of work and go wait in line at the post office. There also was not yet a Vinos on Duval, no 915, no Beachside, no 2Cents. And if you asked for a craft beer at any local bar, you were sent packing. There was that seemingly endless period of time after 9/11 when the Key West Airport was attempting to implement all the new 24

BarTabMag.com

security restrictions in their original, tiny building. This included (but was not limited to,) a security line that snaked outside in the sweltering heat which fed into a holding tank style departure room that contained no bar, no bathroom and not even a drinking fountain. And sure, we all miss the old Conch Flyer, but you have to admit, that new departure lounge is pretty nice! Back in the day, Simonton Street Beach was notorious as a place for homeless people to fight, to defecate, and to pass out. Now it boasts a little beach shack bar called Lagerhead’s that has great sandwiches, cold beer, a sandy beach, and even a live guitar player. It is definitely an improvement on the old digs. And if us crusty locals are feeling nostalgic, at least there’s still Dairy Queen and The Chart Room. If we are feeling nostalgic AND drunk, we can always sing a mean karaoke version of “Glory Days” at Bobby’s Monkey Bar. For now, I’ll roll with the changes, and try to stop complaining. But if Bad Boy Burrito closes up shop, I’m outta here! cleighpujado@gmail.com

Morgan Maynard @ the Lazy Gecko, 203 Duval

Full name, originally from?

Morgan Nicole Maynard, January 1st, 1991 – what’d you say?

Bartender Profile

Where are you from?

[laughs] Morgan Nicole Maynard, Inverness, Florida. What’s it like growing up in central Florida?

It was a lot of fun, it’s just completely different than here. Middle of nowhere. I literally would have boyfriends come & pick me up on dates on their airboat & we would go out alligator hunting & frog gigging, or go drink beers in the river in the middle of nowhere. I swear to God. How many times have you been to Disney World?

Oh my God. I can’t even count. My mom worked for the state, so we used to get in for free. And it was only an hour from home, so I used to go all the time. How did you end up in Key West?

A classic – Spring Break. Four years ago now. I literally went back home, I changed all my classes to online for my last semester of college, moved back down. Do you remember the first drink that you ever had?

It was Jäger. Jäger & Natty Light. Hand in hand.

Do you have any traditions we should know about?

I drink a Redheaded Slut every year on my birthday. Which is January 1, 1991. [laughs] Just in case you forgot. Do redheads have more fun?

Come on. We’re dangerous. We definitely have more fun.

What is the most important trait that you do as a bartender?

I just like being honest. If they ask me, ‘What do you think about this drink, or that food item?’ I tell them the honest truth, because they respect you so much more for it. Favorite mom & pop style establishment in Key West?

Garbo’s [Grill] is one of my absolute favorite places. I went there when I came here for Spring Break & I’ve been going there ever since. Best part about working at The Lazy Gecko?

Being somewhere where you have tourists & can meet new people, but then every day I know I’m going to see certain locals that come in to visit us & that I’ve gotten to know over the last year & are like new friends to me. I’ve made a lot of new friends being here & I appreciate that. You can see for yourself if redheads do have more fun when you visit Morgan behind the bar at The Lazy Gecko, 203 Duval St.

Anthony Picone www.AnthonyPicone.com

Full name, originally from?

Anthony Mario Picone, Jr. Originally from Yonkers, New York.

BarTab BarChord

How did your music career kick off?

I formed my first band in high school & we wrote a bunch of songs & did a bunch of Rush covers. We put on a few concerts at the high school. What other type of jobs have you had?

I had just about every job that you could imagine. In my late 20s, I worked supermarkets, I worked a movie theater, I worked in sales, telemarketing, drove a limo, I had a couple of corporate jobs, I sold insurance. [laughs] Yeah. When did you start playing music full-time?

I would say, almost 15 years ago. I just gave my age away. What was your inspiration for The Highest I’ve Ever Been album?

I kind of came up with a sound that was a little different than previous bands I have been in. I was a playing a lot of acoustic guitar so I started writing these songs just to make my gigs more interesting. The content of the songs, lyrically, came from different social issues in my life. Like dealing with different kinds of people. I found writing a lot of the songs helped me cope with those issues. My wife, Beth, was a big inspiration for some of the songs, too. How long did it take you to write?

The songs were written in a few months, but it took me about 9-10 months to record it. 34

BarTabMag.com

Are you still a fan of putting out an album, releasing a group of songs at once, as opposed to a few songs here & there?

I definitely like the album aspect because it ties the songs together into a theme, musically. I think people like to hold onto something & look at a picture. I think people still want something physical. I’m not opposed to bands that put out singles, but I definitely favor the album concept. What song on the album are you most proud of?

My favorite song is ‘Maybe Someday.’ It has crushing track, piano, organ, acoustic guitar, electric guitar. I think it could be a single. I think that’s my favorite song because it fits in with today’s music, but it also has a retro vibe to it. And I think it crosses over into many different genres. What’s the highest you’ve ever been?

On a spiritual plane? When I’m moved to Key West. See Anthony Picone around town at places such as Virgilio’s, The Lazy Gecko, Smokin’ Tuna Saloon & Dante’s. You can download his new album, The Highest I’ve Ever Been, on his website www.AnthonyPicone.com.

John Vagnoni

@ the Green Parrot, 601 Whitehead

The caretaker & gatekeeper to the best stage in the Keys, John Vagnoni has been watching over The Green Parrot bar for more than 4 decades. BarTab recently sat down with this Key West icon for a short Q&A... When was the first time you came to The Green Parrot?

I stepped off a city bus in 1973, right through the side door of The Green Parrot & ordered a 15 cent beer. And that was the beginning of my love affair with this corner. How did you get employment here?

I started as a bartender for Pat & Judy Sullivan. I hung around for a while & I just kind of wore them down till Pat hired me. I happen to be sitting at the bar one night & the bartender didn’t show up so they handed me the stick. When did you move into the management position?

Probably five years later. Judy, the sole owner then, moved to Tallahassee & kind of handed me the keys. She told me to send her a check every month until [Jim] Bean bought it from her in 1983. When did the music at The Parrot really take off?

I would say Bean was the one that kick-started the music. He liked a bar with live music, so he told me to go out & rustle up some bands. The first person I found was Bill Blue. When did you start bringing in bigger, out-of-town bands?

Several years after that. Vicki Roush was doing the booking for us & she got us involved with the Chitlin’ Circuit of Blues Bands. We started getting some traveling national act in here. 36

BarTabMag.com

Why do you think it was so successful?

Our proximity to incredible musical cultural of Latin funk, urban rock & hip-hop happening in Miami. We were lucky enough to form great relationships with top-tier bands of this phenomenal landscape like Spam All Stars, ¡Suénalo!, Locos por Juana, & Xperimento to name a few. Also the post-Katrina diaspora of musicians in New Orleans that allowed us again to forge some very special & mutually beneficial relationships with an abundance of super talented, but then displaced players. Musicians got to know The Parrot, saw what we were doing & spread the word to other New Orleans bands. The other big thing for us was when we created the [5:30pm] sound checks it gave those who might not be able to stay awake for the late shows a chance to hear these great bands. Have you been shocked at someone you were able to book?

Mick Taylor from the Rolling Stones kind of flipped my shit. Then Marty Stonely, who was a friend of his and he knew he was in Fort Lauderdale – Mick was, – so we lined up some side band for him & he came down & Mick Taylor played at The Green Parrot.

What are some other big names you’ve had on stage?

Wayne Kramer, who is a founding member of the MC5. He was on a work release program from a federal prison & he wound up in Stock Island working as a carpenter. He wanted to keep playing music & for some reason he selected us to be kind of the house band. So he got some pick up players from Fort Lauderdale & they came in & would do weekends. One of the most jaw-dropping things I’ve ever seen in here, is to see Wayne Kramer with this sonic assault of music. He came in with a little skinny tie & a thin-labelled suit & just let it rip. Man, it was some of the most incredible music I’ve ever heard. It was the one time we ever got cited for a sound violation, where the cops just descended on us like, ‘What is going on here?’ It was great. He played for quite a while. He’s a great guy, & what a great performer. What’s one place you wish was still around?

I miss the Full Moon Saloon, for sure. And I miss some of the little joints. The Midget Bar, stuff like that. The Midget was down across the street from Divers Direct where that parking lot is now – where they’re building condos. It was a tiny little joint that was just a dozen bar stools. They would close the bar at 4am by putting a chain across the door & then reopen it at 7am. Pretty much a shrimper’s bar because the shrimp docks were right down Greene Street. That was actually one of my first jobs in Key West. I remember the first night I showed up – & Bud & Dorothy McArthur owned the place – & Bud said, ‘The cash register’s out of order tonight. You’ll have to make change from this cigar box.’ I stepped behind the bar & the cash register was on the floor with bullet holes in it. It turned

out that a shrimper had come in the night before & shot the place up. So that was his idea of the register being out of order. Who would win in a drinking contest between the bingo night crowd & the ukulele night crowd?

Wow, that is a real tough one there. I put my money on the bingo crowd. [laughs] Do you have anybody on a wish list you’d like to get here?

I’d like to get the Mighty Sparrow back. He was here once. He was probably the best – the most well-known musician we’ve ever had. He was like the Elvis of the Caribbean, so that was a highlight. My wish list, I’d like to get the steel-band back from Trinidad. It was a children’s high school steel-band that won the contest in Trinidad. They were 50 kids with pans that came in & played. I would love to do that again. I’d love to see Lawrence Ferlinghetti walk in the door again. He came in here once. So yeah, I’ve got lots of people. Have you guys ever charged a cover here?

What do we say – ‘no cover, no minimum, no wonder.’ Any other general shout outs or plugs?

I love The Green Parrot. I love my new partner, Pat Croce. He’s brought a lot to the table for me. Just keep the ball rolling here. We have a great, great tradition & we have a good time. And don’t forget Ukulele Night. The Green Parrot is located at 601 Whitehead St & hosts the best bands in the Keys. See their music schedule on pg 11 or at www.TheGreenParrot.com. Also, it’s hard to fit over 40 years of Green Parrot history in the pages of the BarTab. You can read John’s entire interview on www.BarTabMag.com under profiles. 37
