Back-to-school ministries still need help MAM Uniform Drive

It’s not too late to make a contribution to the MAM back-to-school uniform drive. Each school year hundreds of SBISD students benefit from this uniform program. Chapelwood’s donations to the program in the past have benefited 150 children. If you would like to make a contribution, you can send a check to the church office and mark it as “MAM Back to School.” This is just one of many ways that we as a church are serving and blessing our school district and the families.

The Power of One The education of our youth is a community effort. Men's Life begins sixth year Kickoff barbecue, September 11, 6:00 p.m.

Chapelwood’s Men’s Life program enters its sixth year this September. All men of Chapelwood are invited to participate and to bring their friends. The year begins with a kick-off barbecue on Tuesday, September 11, at 6:00 p.m. in YB100. Enjoy some Goode Company Barbecue and find out more about this year’s Men’s Life program. Serving Ministry

Consider facts and stories of human trafficking As we prepare to “Hear the cry” of those being trafficked throughout the world we will want to first hear the facts. Consider this….

An estimated 2.5 million people are in forced labor (including sexual exploitation) at any given time: There are 1.4 million (about 56%) are in Asia and the Pacific. There are 250,000 (10%) are in Latin America and the Caribbean.

About the victims • The majority of trafficking victims are between 18 and 24 years of age.

• An estimated 1.2 million children are trafficked each year.

• Physical or sexual violence is experienced by 95% of victims.

• Sexual exploitation is forced on 43% of victims, and 98% are women and girls.

• Economic exploitation is forced on 32% of victims, and 56% are women and girls.

• Many trafficking victims have at least middle-level education.

About the Traffickers • 52% of recruiters are men, 42% are women and 6% work as couples.

• In 54% of cases the recruiter was a stranger to the victim.

About the Profits Estimated global annual profits made from the exploitation of all trafficked forced labor are $31.6 billion. Of this, $15.5 billion (49%) is generated in industrialized economies.

About prosecutions In 2006 there were only 5,808 prosecutions and 3,160 convictions throughout the world. This means that for every 800 people trafficked, only one person was convicted in 2006.

These are the facts and the data. But to “hear the cry” we must hear more. We must hear a story.

“Sabine was the only member of her family to survive the genocide in Rwanda, so she agreed when a wealthy family offered her a chance to move to America with them. Shortly after her arrival, however, she was imprisoned in their home, forced to work around the clock, and made to sleep on the kitchen floor. She was never paid for any of her work, and she was not allowed to leave. Finally after six months of servitude, Sabine was allowed to go to church for an hour each Sunday. On one visit, she was approached by a kind Rwandan man who learned of her situation and helped her escape. He took Sabine to an agency that immediately referred her to a local anti-trafficking non-profit organization.

Sabine was afraid of everything. She did not want to leave the

apartment after 4:00 p.m. because it was too dark, and she was afraid to walk anywhere by herself. She had never been independent in the U.S., so even going to the grocery store or using a gift card terrified her. Her case manager not only accompanied her when shopping, but also conducted case management sessions in her transitional housing home, where she felt safe and secure. Because of her attentive case manager, after only three months, she was able to visit the office on her own. She also began shopping on her own and familiarizing herself with the neighborhood. When she was rescued, she spoke no English, but after taking English lessons, she is now conversational. Sabine is fortunate to have escaped. Many more are not so lucky.”

Human trafficking is a global issue. Houston is considered by many THE hub of human trafficking in the USA. You read that right – Houston, Texas. This is not simply an issue of global proportions that happens elsewhere. It affects people in our communities. People we might see in on the streets, or in restaurants or stores.

There are still more stories we will be invited to hear and a greater awareness we will need. How can we do this? Over the next several months you will be learning about opportunities as they relate to this issue. I strongly encourage you to find a way to participate. Look for resources at a table in the Fountain Hallway on Sunday mornings.

Through Chapelwood's global mission’s partnership in Haiti with Haitian Artisans for Peace International (HAPI), women are being empowered by utilizing loans to become self-sufficient. A woman who can help support herself and her family is less likely to fall victim to trafficking or sold into slavery.

A seminar for those in personal or career transition There’s an old Chinese proverb that states, “Man who says ‘it cannot be done’ should not interrupt the man doing it.” Our thinking can limit us in almost everything we do. If we can change the way we think, we can open doors to a wide array of possibilities for our lives. As Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “A man’s mind, stretched to a new idea, can never return to its original dimensions.”

The Only One Standing In Your Way Is You! challenges you to stretch your mind and examine some of the “truths” to which you are clinging that may be keeping you from being the person God created you to be. These “truths” come to us from society as a whole, as well as from our parents, teachers and friends. Discovering and discarding these false “truths” will be the central focus of the seminar.

Along the way we will explore the way words can either create or destroy. And you will learn their impact on your beliefs. We will talk about motivation and the lure of being conformed to society’s view of success. You will learn the importance of values, core purpose, and vision, and begin drafting a personal core purpose statement.

God has given each one of us gifts He expects us to use for His glory. Because of our free choice, we, too, often are the ones who get in His way. There’s an old Native American prayer that goes like this: “Make me strong, not to be superior to my brothers, but to be able to fight my greatest enemy: myself.” Join us as we explore how we can better align our thoughts and actions to become the person God created us to be.

Wednesday Night Suppers and Studies begin continued from page 1 Apocalypse: Controversies and Meaning in Western History Bob Johnson and Al Hoppe will lead this study of Revelation that is based on a 24-week series by the Teaching Company. The meaning of the Greek word for apocalypse is “disclosure,” and John’s book discloses dimensions of two age-old mysteries: the character of evil and the nature of hope. In this course we will explore three aspects of The Book of Revelation: The historical and intellectual background, a close reading of the text focusing on the meaning of its images, and the wide-ranging impact of the book on Christian and Western history.

A supplemental textbook will be offered for a nominal fee.

Praying Ministry

Spiritual Foundations class begins September 12 This fall, The Center for Christian Spirituality will offer an opportunity for spiritual growth that includes teaching, practice and small group participation. Called Spiritual Foundations: Uncovering Your Life in God, the nine-week experience is designed to lead persons into a deepening understanding of the spiritual journey and a growing experience of intimacy with God through Jesus Christ.

Specifically, the course will help persons uncover their own true self in God and live more fully into the shape of God’s design for their lives.

The class includes three components: First, Jerry Webber has written a workbook that provides readings, spiritual practices and specific prayer exercises for daily and weekly reflection. The bound workbook will be available around September 1.

The teaching component in the workbook will provide a framework for ongoing spiritual growth. The spiritual practices and disciplines will offer hands-on ways to engage the spiritual life intentionally. And the prayer exercises will give participants tangible ways to pray with and reflect on the material. The cost of the workbook will be determined by final printing cost.

Second, Jerry will provide weekly teachings to supplement the workbook. He will illuminate the concepts and foundations from the workbook in a class setting. These weekly class sessions will take place face-to-face on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. in LC201. They also may be accessed remotely by live Web stream at www.chapelwood.org/ prayer or later by archive at that same Web address. Thus, you may participate in the class without having to attend the face-to-face teaching times on Wednesdays.

Finally, you will have an opportunity to be a part of a small group in order to process the material and share the journey together. There will be small group meetings at various days and times. Each group will have a facilitator to help guide the group. The main purpose for the groups, however, is to provide a way to interact with others who are seeking to engage the spiritual journey and to provide a forum for our struggles and celebrations as we move onward. At this time, we are still putting together the schedule of meeting times for the small groups. Because the size of each group will be limited, you will need to register for a specific group.

Spiritual Foundations begins September 12 and goes through November 14. Face-to-face classes will be offered on Wednesday evenings in LC201 at 6:30 p.m. Small groups will be offered at other times of the week.

Invite your friends to the first of three BOLD Adult Lunch Series Programs on Thursday, October 4, The Miraculous Rescue of the Chilean Miners, featuring Greg Hall with Elaine Scott.

Greg is the creator of the famous Plan B that eventually saved the 33 men. Greg was also at the scene when the trapped miners realized they would be saved. Greg will be joined by Chapelwood member and author Elaine Scott, who wrote Buried Alive, the story of the 69-day ordeal. Elaine worked closely with Greg in writing her book. It’s fall kickoff for Kids Choirs! We’re having a combo Pep Rally to fire up and Water Games to keep cool. Houston Texans Cheerleaders will be here to start the cheering and sign autographs. On the East Field we’ll have water shooters, beach balls, bubbles, snow cones and a giant water balloon fight for all grades. In the Smith Bldg. we’ll meet the cheerleaders and the Choir Team before going to the choir rooms where singers will be dismissed. Kids should wear clothing that can get wet and water shoes. Parents may drop off children or stay for the festivities.

NEW this year to our choir program: 11th Hour Power Choir happens 11:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. every Sunday. This is a new choir for Kindergarten – 5th grades. They will sing occasionally in worship and are welcome to participate in musicals that happen in December and April. We are excited to offer this new opportunity for those singers who can’t participate in our afternoon choirs. We need a great team of helpers to make it happen; please contact Rita Stuckey if you can help Sunday morning or afternoon.

Our Kids Choirs have a long and strong tradition, and that continues with our committed adult leaders in partnership with parents. With this year’s new additions and plans, our choirs will provide an excellent experience for our kids that is not to be missed! We also look forward to welcoming new singers from the community of Esperanza this year in our afternoon choirs.

Tapachula Informational Meeting

Monday, September 10, 6:00 p.m., LC215 The Tapachula mission pilgrimage team which will travel in January 2013 is open to men and women. For the last six years, we have sent a unique, all female team. This year, Mission on the Move has asked for us to send men along as well. The mission is home to 39 boys and girls ranging in age from four to 21.

New Sunday Morning Class

A new Sunday morning class is being formed beginning Sunday, September 9, at 11:00 a.m. in CB201. This class is for young couples who like to attend the 9:45 a.m. worship service. The fellowship and study, prayer and social activities will be designed to strengthen marriages and help growing families to follow Christ together.

On September 9, the group will gather to meet everybody, pick a name for the class, discuss lessons/teachers, and other ideas. From there we will have lunch together at Second Sunday Chicken lunch.
