THE LARGEST TERRACOTT King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is being built in Saudi Arabia as an international, graduate -level research university dedicated to inspiring a new age of scientific achievement in the Kingdom that will also benefit the region and the world. KAUST will be merit-based and will recruit men and women from around the world.

NBK Keramik, the World’s market leader in Architectural Terracotta with its headquarters in the North-West of Germany is proud to announce that it has manufactured and delivered approximately 140,000 m2 of high quality terracotta tiles and specially formed elements for the KAUST project.

KAUST is situated on the eastern shore of the Red Sea at Thuwal, approximately 80 kilometers north of Saudi Arabia’s second largest city, Jeddah — and approximately an hour north of Mecca in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

KAUST was the largest project to be clad in terracotta. The largest terracotta project prior to this was the Potsdamer Platz in Berlin with approximately 78,000 m2 of product manufactured by NBK.

TA PROJECT IN THE WORLD The buildings were overclad with terracotta tiles as a rear ventilated rainscreen system. The sunscreen cladding was provided by terracotta fluted profiles which were developed especially for the KAUST project. The rainscreen and sunscreen provide major benefits in the thermal performance of the building.

The layout of all louver panels has been designed in a random pattern to create a spectacular faรงade design. NBK has also manufactured all window sills, ceilings, deep reveals and copings in terracotta.

The faรงade colour scheme consists of two different grey colours, each of these colours is produced in varying tones.

The delivery of the elements started in November 2007, the installation of all terracotta elements will be finished by September of this year.
