Seal of accomplishment Ambulatory Healthcare Services are making medical care accessible and affordable to all

A

mbulatory Healthcare Services (AHS) has become the first organisation across the world to achieve the ‘network accreditation’ from the Joint Commission International (JCI). The accreditation, which was hitherto granted to individual healthcare facilities, is now offered to healthcare networks. The first-of-its-kind endorsement was achieved for AHS’ compliance with JCI Ambulatory Standards (April 2010 edition) across 20 of its healthcare centers, five disease prevention and screening centers and three mobile clinic solutions. "This is in keeping with our mission to continually improve customer care to recognised international standards in line with our vision to provide world-class healthcare to our customers and communities. We are very proud of this accomplishment and would like to congratulate our employees at AHS whose hard work and dedication to excellence helped achieve this honour," commented Saif Bader Al Qubaisi, MD and Chairman, SEHA, adding that one of their goals is to have all facilities under SEHA's umbrella earn this distinguished seal of accomplishment. The accreditation process, which was completed over a period of two weeks required 18 months of preparation and focused on the assessment of key service areas according to JCI standards. In addition to entailing personnel training, review of policies and procedures, the process included the development of key teams in each of the network divisions and the AHS headquarters. AHS facilities were also assessed through a mock survey implemented by JCI consultants from the US.

AHS aims to offer easy access to primary and specialist patient care Rashid Saif Al Qubaisi, CEO, AHS, said, “AHS has come a long way in ensuring optimum ambulatory services in line with global best practices. A historic achievement for both AHS and the UAE, the JCI accreditation reflects the UAE leadership’s vision to provide quality, world-class healthcare to the community in Abu Dhabi. This achievement represents a dramatic turning point and is the most important initiative undertaken by the AHS since becoming a part of the Abu Dhabi Company for Health Services (SEHA) almost four years ago.” Al Qubaisi added that Abu Dhabi is witnessing significant shifts in various economic and social sectors, guided by the vision of the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and General Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. The strategy has helped make Abu Dhabi the focus of major international institutions and global media. The international arm of the independent, non-profit organisation, The Joint Commis-

sion (TJC), JCI was established in 1994 to assist international healthcare organisations, public health agencies, ministries and others to improve the quality and safety of patient care in more than 80 countries. JCI has been accrediting health care organisations since 1999, and has certified approximately 450 public and private healthcare organizations in 50 countries. In June 2011, JCI received a four-year accreditation by the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua). Accreditation by ISQua provides assurance that the standards, training and processes used by JCI to survey the performance of healthcare organisations meet the highest international benchmarks for accreditation entities. AHS is a unique outpatient care concept from SEHA that aims to offer easy access to primary and specialist patient care, including comprehensive laboratory and modern diagnostic facilities. AHS is responsible for operating school health services, disease prevention and screening Centers, mobile clinic solutions and ambulatory care centers across Abu Dhabi.

Companies can now visit the Disease Prevention and Screening Center (DPSC) in Abu Dhabi or Mussafah to register and receive the AHS Smart Pay card. The card is available in two categories — silver and platinum; the platinum card contains information about the individual cardholder and is dedicated to big companies employing a large number of employees. The official launch follows a pilot wherein selected companies employing a large number of employees started testing Phase 1 services. Signaling a new era of services provided by AHS, the main aim of the newly launched services is to facilitate the process of applying and

registering for the visa screening services provided in the centers. Once fully launched, DPSC Smart Services will provide a variety of options for visa screening pre-registration, including pre-registration through self-service kiosks and online preregistration. It will also enable payment using the AHS Smart Pay card, which can be topped up using self-service kiosks, at the DPSC counters, or online. This is set to ease the process for corporations and helps avoid the need to carry large amounts of cash when visiting the centers. Built on the latest platinum generation of automated payment systems, the Smart Pay system is considered one of the latest and state-of-the-art systems. AHS plans to place 20 self-service kiosks across all Disease Prevention and Screening Centers in Abu Dhabi. The services will be launched in all other centers early this year.

Bigger and better AHS opens new Disease Prevention and Screening Center in Ghayathi

Bringing home the best AHS brings world renowned one-day BMJ Masterclass conference to the UAE, first time outside the UK

A

mbulatory Healthcare Services (AHS) has formed a strategic alliance with the British Medical Journal (BMJ) to organize a oneday conference addressing specific issues relating to Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs). In a conference held last year in November, Rashid Saif Al Qubaisi, Chief Executive Officer, AHS, said: “It gives us great pleasure to organize the second international conference sponsored by AHS on musculoskeletal medicine in collaboration with BMJ. This conference gave clinicians an update on the management of key musculoskeletal conditions in primary care and the latest evidence in musculoskeletal medicine.” Dr Omar Al Jabri, Chief Medical Officer, AHS, commented: "Musculoskeletal issues are very common but least covered during our professional development. High quality training and professional development for all our staff, is a key strategic aim of the AHS. Partnering with a renowned medical organization such as the BMJ, will help the AHS achieve its objectives." Dr Latifa Al Ketbi, Head of CPD Committee at AHS, added: “Expert speakers led symptom and case-based sessions, which aimed to increase doctors’ awareness of red flags, conditions that are easy to miss and can lead to possible complications.” Speakers provided plenty of practical tips, includ-

ing live demonstrations of examination techniques, and advice on referral and how to make it work within their multidisciplinary team and interact and learn best practice from the leading experts. Dr Elspeth Wise, who was recently awarded an MD for research focused on GP registrars' musculoskeletal education, chaired the event and addressed the issue of shoulder pain. Prof Martin Underwood, head of the division of health services at Warwick Medical School, presented a session about back and neck pain featuring 'what not to miss'. Dr Richard Smith, a consultant in rheumatology and musculoskeletal medicine at Salisbury Hospital and a tutor at the British Institute of Musculoskeletal Medicine, discussed the management of patients with hip and knee pain. The course offers a wide range of topics including elbow and hand complaints, focusing on arthritis, pain in the hip, knee, multiple joints, back, and shoulder, as well as sports injuries and learning bites on gout, osteoporosis and joint injections and the most common problems encountered in everyday clinical practice. Dr Christine Bowen, BMJ Masterclass, remarked, "The key messages that were communicated at the masterclass were how to clinically examine, diagnose and treat, exercise tips and lifestyle changes. Also how to prevent or minimize the debilitating effects of MSD, highlighting the fact that preventative measures are cost-effective and the benefits of recognizing typical symptoms early." The conference attracted more than 300 delegates from the UAE and the region. The target audience included clinicians at all levels, including those with an interest in musculoskeletal medicine.

Rashid Saif Al Qubaisi, CEO, Ambulatory Healthcare Services, officially opened the newly relocated Disease Prevention and Screening Center in Ghayathi on November 26 last year. The center has moved from Ghayathi Hospital to a new dedicated facility in the Al Dhafra Club in Ghayathi. Commenting on the event, Rashid Saif Al Qubaisi said: “The relocation of the DPSC to a dedicated facility in Ghayathi is a step towards achieving our goal of providing the UAE nationals and residents in Abu Dhabi with an easy access to the highest quality ambulatory healthcare services and facilitating customer access to our services.” Mohamed Hassan Al Zaabi, Chief Facilities Officer, added: “The new location offers improved facilities designed with the customer’s comfort and privacy in mind. Particularly catering to female customers, the center features a dedicated women’s waiting area, which was not available in the old location, to ensure their utmost comfort and satisfaction. In addition, the current facility provides all services in one location, thus saving customers the need to travel between buildings.” The new facility features three doctor consultation rooms — two male and one female; three blood collection rooms — two male and one female; one room each for male and female vaccination and x-ray facilities using advanced picture archiving and communication service (PACS) for quality and efficient radiology reporting. The center continues to provide visa screening, pre-employment screening, travel health, and disease control management services.
