T
op Surface Acoustics not only offers high quality, patented, eco-friendly products but we also provide customers with custom acoustical advice as well as helpful consultation. It takes a holistic approach in helping customers understand the acoustical issues in their space and then present a practical approach. Sound is not something that often comes up when people talk about designing and renovating the spaces. Designers/consultants often tend to focus on the aesthetics first, but sound is an essential element, which needs to be taken care during the design stage of any project. However, there is a difference between soundproofing and acoustics, says Muneer Musliyarakath, Managing Director of Top Surface. “Soundproofing refers to the prevention of sound transmission from one space to another, like the din of roadworks while you’re indoors,” he says. “Acoustics, on the other hand, refers to the amount of reverberation or echoing that can be heard within a room when one is speaking or playing music.” Both are equally important during when it comes to the comfort, he adds. Muneer says: “Here at Top
Muneer Musliyarakath Managing Director Top Surface Surface, we have highly experienced acousticians and installers, and we keep all types of acoustic materials such as acoustic polyester panels, felt panels, wooden panels, foam panels, acoustic fabric, mass loaded viny barrier, acoustic underlayment, sound masking systems, acoustic doors and windows and all type of flooring items makes the clients easy source every item under one roof. Established and trusted with qualified personnel, Top Surface provides prompt service conforming to the highest professional standards in the industry. It delivers top-quality execution within the shortest timeline. It is because of this that Top Surface has established long-term relationships with its clients all over the GCC. Top Surface offers a variety of acoustic solutions: Recording Studio: Proper acoustic treatment can transform a muddy sounding room with poor midrange definition and erratic bass response, into a room with
Home Theatre: One’s home entertainment audio-visual systems should emulate the movie theatre experience, while still using consumer-grade video and audio equipment. With Top Surface’s products, a home theatre system will easily replicate the enthralling commercial movie-watching experience. Auditorium: Every auditorium is designed differently and this creates a complex set of issues because in addition to its various, sometimes conflicting, aesthetics, functional, technical, economical requirements, an auditorium often has to accommodate a large audience. Top Surface’s solutions assure that each member of the audience hears the sound at the same quality no matter where they sit. Floor: Top Surface provides a well-known brand of acoustics floors with a high specification, and are independently tested and proven with many proprietary finishes. These solutions solve the problem of impact and airborne sound transmission through timber and concrete floors. It offers the following: Acoustic Floating Floors, Underlays, Overlay Systems and Combination Systems. Ceiling: Top Surface provides a range of specialist acoustic suspended ceilings, that are designed to acoustically enhance the overall separating floor construction with high levels of sound insulation, correct acoustic ceiling system and appropriate acoustic floor systems.

T
oday a great importance is given to the acoustical environment, with sound control playing a key role in reducing noise to levels not harmful to human ears. To tackle this challenge, Knauf developed a wide range of non-load bearing lightweight partitions and ceiling systems. These partition systems can be implemented in the design of residential, commercial and industrial properties as well as in high demanding cinema projects. Knauf ’s partition systems are designed to offer high performance, meeting the most demanding fire resistance, sound insulation and height requirements. Offering quick and simple speed of installation constructed from high quality Knauf components, our partitions are guaranteed to perform. We have selected and developed the most performant materials, so our clients can rest assured that using our recommended solutions will meet and exceed their expectations. Knauf ’s solutions provide satisfaction and reassurance in knowing that these components have been comprehensively tested

together to ensure their performance, and that our support extends from concept to site. A widely accepted noise reducing technique is to combine the sound blocking properties of boards with absorbing properties of insulation, forming a massspring-mass system. This type of assembly outperforms the classical masonry walls by offering better results — reducing weight by a factor of six while cutting thickness in half. In the last few years, Knauf became a staple in the fast-growing cinema sector, one of the most demanding in terms of sound rating and structural heights. What is the key to this success? Using unique materials that outperform the norm. Knauf boards used in sound blocking are on the top of their range, with the heaviness of the board being a key factor to reduce a couple of decibels with no extra cost and reinforcement while the insulation applied in the cavities, by Knauf Insulation, offering unique attributes. Manufactured free of formaldehyde, not only is it remarkably eco-friendly but it’s function as a sound
absorber is second to none. As the market defines insulation by density, little is known that properties such as fibre size, fibre length and thickness have a dramatic impact on airflow resistance and therefore on the acoustical performance. Fibre size is an important parameter with impact on the sound absorption, as there is an increase in the sound absorption coefficient with a decrease in fibre diameter. Knauf Insulation’s acoustic range has fibres with an average diameter of approximately half the size of typical mineral wool products. At the same volume and density, a greater number of fibres is packed together resulting in increased friction and a higher airflow resistance. Another key factor influencing the sound absorbing properties of a fibrous material is the specific air flow resistance. Knauf Insulation’s Glass Mineral Wool is made with longer fibres that increase tortuosity by interlocking one another and offering more frictional elements resisting to the acoustic wave motion. Striking the optimal balance is what creates high performance acoustic solutions without out-ofcontrol prices. That is what we do at Knauf. — Eleonora Balaj is the Senior Specification Manager UAE and Oman at Knauf LLC and Bruno Santos is the Specification Manager UAE, Oman and Pakistan at Knauf Insulation.
