AUSTRIAN COMPANIES PAVE THE WAY FOR ROBUST DEVELOPMENTS IN GCC CONSTRUCTION SECTOR For almost a decade the GCC construction sector had been a safe harbour for private investors and government alike to pool their investments. The availability of a steady stream of investments in addition to the ever-growing demand from residential, commercial, retail, infrastructural and hospitality sector, ensured a steady robust growth pattern for this sector. Then came the global economic downturn of 2008 that changed the tenor of the construction industry in the GCC at large. Following a challenging period in 2009 and mid 2010, the last quarter of 2010 has been a turning point for the construction sector across all the countries in the GCC region. The largest construction market, Saudi Arabia, had initiated revolutionary developments for infrastructural, economical, industrial and educational projects to uplift the services and facilities provided in the country thereby encouraging business opportunities and receding public debt. Even the construction market in the UAE is on the brink of bagging few high-profile contract awards in 2011. Bouncing back from the global economic slowdown, Kuwait is all set to make an impressive return in 2011 with several initiatives at both the government and private investor level. Meanwhile, the successful World Cup bid has also sparked an interest in Qatar’s construction sector. Despite the temperamental times and mercurial market behaviour in the region, Austria has managed to maintain a steadfast hold on the region. From innovation to top-notch quality, highly developed research and development departments, high safety norms , compliance to the best industry standards and practices — the reasons behind the country’s success are manifold. Several leading Austrian companies have consolidated their position in the GCC market by bagging prestigious projects and setting up subsidiary offices in the region. The Austrian Trade commission gives a glimpse of some of the top Austrian companies and their projects that have left an indelible mark on the construction sector in the GCC region.

UNGER STEEL MIDDLEEAST: STRUCTURAL STEEL CONSTRUCTION GURUS Austria has always been renowned for its superior quality of structural steel works and on-schedule delivery of turn-key constructions — this is where Unger Steel Middle East steps in. Established and developed around Unger Stahlbau Ges.m.b.H., one of Europe’s leading steel construction companies, Unger Steel Middle East represents the Unger Group’s comprehensive service range in the Middle East since the beginning of 2007. The new construction of the plant in Sharjah (UAE) in 2007 was a milestone in the company’s expansion history. Four years on since setting up its Middle East operations, Unger Steel has been involved with some of most prestigious projects, including the ongoing Dubai Airport

expansion to which the company is supplying 1.3 tonnes of steel. Recently it fabricated TWS and installed 5,200 tonnes of steel over the roofs of all grandstands, entrances and administrative buildings for the Formula 1 race track project on Yas island. In the Mall of the Emirates project, the company was also

involved with the expansion that features a magnificent glass dome. The apex of the new dome is 38 metres above ground floor level — high enough to house the Statue of Liberty from crown to toe. The Unger Steel Group also was singlehandedly behind achieving the elegant shape of the dome including its assembly and fabrication among others. Other prestigious projects that Unger Steel has been a part of include Burj Khalifa pavilions in Dubai and Knauf Industrial Park in Ras Al Khaimah. As for the company’s future plans, Nasar Kandah, COO of Unger Steel Middle East FZE, says: “The GCC governments are in a distinctive position to shape the future of eco-innovation globally. Governments, particularly, in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, have the power to influence their strong positions in the market to use it as an engine for knowledge transfer and economic diversification. It is keeping all this in mind that we are currently focusing on Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Abu Dhabi. It is quite well-known that 2022 FIFA World Cup will be held in Qatar, so there would be a lot of significant projects that we need to focus on.”

Doka Gulf FZE, a subsidiary of the Doka Group, one of the world’s leading companies in the field of formwork technology for the construction industry, have been valuable project partners for many companies worldwide in their quest to stay ahead of the continuous evolution of the construction industry. Some iconic projects in the UAE, that Doka Gulf FZE is best known for, include: Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world; completion of the 425-metre Marina 101 high-rise residential tower; the Capital Gate at ADNEC Abu Dhabi which is the furthest leaning manmade tower in the world; and in the earlier years of the Dubai boom its technical formwork solutions on Burj Al Arab, the opulent sail shaped luxury hotel in Dubai. Though Doka is famous in the UAE for its expertise in high-rise and super-high-rise construction, Doka’s roots lie in civil engineering with global expertise in bridges, tunneling and industrial work — all of which have been extended further in the UAE. Increased demand for Doka formwork on petrochemical projects in Habshan and Ruwais, work on governmental industrial zone and port projects, water, power and sewage applications in Abu Dhabi, the first cable-stayed bridge in the UAE, etc. continues. Doka’s phenomenal growth in the Middle East is not restricted to the UAE alone. Due to governmental diversification plans, which include aggressive expansion and growth for the GCC region, Doka has been rapidly consolidating its position in the region. Doka’s defined Middle East region consists of eight countries, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait,

Bahrain, Jordan and Lebanon. Sales and service offices are located within each country, with the logistical support of the 50,000 square metres premises in Jebel Ali Free Zone as a central location for the region’s supply needs. In Qatar, Doka has secured and is supporting two major upcoming landmarks in Doha — the Musheireb Project and the Bridge Towers, which will be completed in 2012. Looking to the major growth in Qatar anticipated due to the 2022 World Cup, Doka Qatar is equipped for and looking to the upcoming challenges of formwork project management on airport, rail, and stadium project announcements. Since the opening of Doka Oman, work is currently progressing in the construction of Wadi Adai —Amerat Road in Muscat. Additionally Doka systems are being deployed at the new $765-million (Dh2.815-billion) Salalah International Airport. Doka has also left an indelible mark on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Numerous

Though Doka is famous in the UAE for its expertise in high-rise and super-high-rise construction, Doka’s roots lie in civil engineering with global expertise in bridges, tunneling and industrial work — all of which have been extended further in the UAE globally renowned projects have been executed such as the unique custom formwork design on the Capital Market Authority Tower located in the King Abdullah Financial District in Riyadh, and also the renowned Princess Noura bint Abdulrahman University, one of the largest in the world.

It is also best known for the formwork supply and service on the expansion of the Holy City of Mecca project. On querying Peter Vogel, Regional General Manager, Doka Gulf FZE, about the future of the construction sector and the potential market opportunities in the region, he responds, “Starting in Kuwait, we have maintained a solid Middle East presence since the 1970’s. Our measured success is through the philosophy and understanding that innovation plays a key role in every project solution. Besides the value engineering that we provide from the earliest design phase of a project through to the reconditioning and even the return of the material Doka has the structure in each country to adapt with exact technologically advanced, safe, fast and flexible formwork solutions required for all projects. The whole world, and not just Doka, are looking to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia which has announced plans for Kingdom Tower, to be the tallest tower in the world, Qatar preparing for 2022, and of course the UAE which is steadily ploughing ahead with its 2030 plan and Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman and the Levant who are respectively developing infrastructure.” As for the future projects, Peter Vogel said, “Since formwork planning starts from the design stage onwards, Doka is engaged in thousands of projects in the Middle East region. The most interesting are the planned major developments in Dubai, the Cultural District Saadiyat Island, new bridges, airport expansions, and of course the vast number of upcoming sophisticated infrastructure projects. Also noteworthy will be social infrastructure development with plans for schools, hospitals and residential infrastructure in the GCC. In the UAE specifically, Doka would be proud to offer its expertise in plans for the Western Region, Baniyas and Al Ain.

WAAGNER-BIRO GULF LLC: THE STEEL AND GLASS ENGINEERING GIANTS Waagner-Biro Gulf LLC has been part of the GCC landscape since the 60s — be it the three steel spikes on the Corniche water tanks in Kuwait or the construction of the first Maqta Bridge in Abu Dhabi in 1967, this Austrian giant has inspired the construction sector in the region with its steel and glass engineering expertise. Some of their important projects include the Dubai Festival City, Burj Khalifa — the world’s tallest building standing, ADNEC — one of the largest steel and glass engineering contracts in Abu Dhabi. However, the current feather in Waagner-Biro’s hat is the installation of the double-glazed glass facade of the iconic 160-metre, 35-storey Capital Gate Tower being built to lean 18 degrees westwards. The $35-million glass is vital to Capital Gate’s design, structure and sustainability. Besides the aesthetic appeal, the double-glazed facade is also used to achieve greater energy efficiency. For Waagner-Biro, it has been a challenging but exciting project. In order to deliver the first of the glazing panels to the site of Abu Dhabi’s iconic Capital Gate tower, the world’s largest flat-bed truck — at 82 feet, half the length of an Olympic swimming pool — was used. In 2007, Waagner-Biro Gulf was also contracted to build the first floating bridge in Dubai connecting the suburbs of Bur Dubai and Deira. Another prominent project in the company’s kitty is the Yas Marina hotel — the façade has been done by Waagner-Biro Steel and Glass, Vienna under the local framework of WB Gulf. As for Waagner-Biro Gulf LLC, all the prestigious projects in the region has set the stage for more of such promising ventures. On querying about future projects, Klaus Eidelpes, Director, Waagner Biro Gulf LLC, said that talks were on for some projects but none have been finalised yet.

STRABAG INTERNATIONAL LLC: BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION LEADERS Strabag, which has a major presence in the construction sector in Germany, Eastern and Central Europe, has also been working in the Gulf since the early ‘70s in the UAE, Oman, Qatar, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The company’s international activities in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and India include transportation infrastructure projects such as roads, railways or airports and automotive proving grounds. Strabag’s operations in civil engineering include bridges, dams, as well as tunnels and harbour facilities. Strabag credits the company’s success to the international cooperation within their strong network. The company has several ongoing projects in the UAE, Oman and Qatar. Some of the projects include: major highways such as the Jebel Hafeet Road in Al Ain, runway works at Abu Dhabi International Airport, building projects in Dubai International Airport, a residential project in the Al Barsha area and a multistorey twin-tower project in Dubai Marina. Recently Strabag won a contract worth Dh494.14 million to build parts of the new

Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi. The construction will be done by a Strabag subsidiary, Ed. Zueblin AG, in association with local partner Al Jaber Transport & General Contracting LLC. The new Khalifa Port will be built around 60 kilometres outside Abu Dhabi and will replace the existing Mina Zayed in the capital’s centre. unique and beneficial for Austrian companies, regional agents and importers of European products, affiliated organisations and business units. In recent times the outlook of the world economy has turned murkier in turn affecting the fast-growing GCC and Gulf countries. In a bid to understand the emerging and frontier markets in the region, Austria Connect Gulf 2011 has decided to dig deeper and confront similar questions related to the region such as focusing on strengthening Austria’s presence in the established and wealthy Gulf economies or on the more profitable but riskier frontier markets in the region. Says Austrian Trade Commissioner in Abu Dhabi, Dr Wolfgang Penzias, “Each year we are trying to cover a variety of subjects impacting the Gulf and its neighbouring countries in connection with Austria. In the long run we want to

promote this event also as an education tool for Austrian companies and to attract local interest to do business with Austria. The construction boom encouraged several Austrian companies to establish themselves in the region. However, the downturn led to the shifting of that business to other GCC and Gulf markets. The resulting change of strategy has impacted Austrian companies’ plans as well as made the entry for upcoming entrepreneurs more complex. We are, therefore, using Austria Connect Gulf 2011 as a platform to discuss the potential of strengthening Austria’s presence in the established and wealthy Gulf economies or focusing on the more profitable but riskier frontier markets in the region. All issues pertaining to this theme will be extensively discussed and presented by industry experts, analysts and by the Austrian Trade Commissioners, their teams and local businessmen.”

AUSTRIA CONNECT GULF2011 IS GETTING DEEPER

THE CURRENT OUTLOOK OF THE WORLD ECONOMY HAS TURNED MURKIER IN TURN AFFECTING THE FAST GROWING GCC AND GULF COUNTRIES. IN A BID TO UNDERSTAND THE EMERGING AND FRONTIER MARKETS IN THE REGION, AUSTRIA CONNECT GULF 2011 DIGS DEEPER AND TACKLES SEVERAL HIGH IMPACT ISSUES WITH A DISTINGUISHED PANEL OF GUESTS AND ENTHUSIASTIC PARTICIPANTS The Austrian Trade Commission in the UAE together with the Austrian Trade Commissions in Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia are all set to host Austria Connect Gulf 2011, a trans-regional event at the Raffles Hotel in Dubai on November 27, 2011. An eminent panel has been finalised, to discuss the main theme of Austria Connect Gulf 2011: “Should one try to strengthen the presence in the established and wealthy Gulf economies or focus on the more profitable but also riskier frontier markets in the region?” The discussion will go deep into high-impact issues related to emerging/frontier markets and its effect on Austrian entrepreneurs. Other timely topics that will be raised at the conference include advertising and public relations in the GCC, the impact of social media networks for business and an extensive country focus on Iran, Iraq, the UAE and Qatar. Last year, Austria Connect

Gulf 2010 discussed crucial and topical issues related to Austria and the GCC countries including Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. The special focus lay on India as the big boomer. In addition, the new ecology standards and its impact on the construction and related industries were analysed with the help of an eminent panel and interested participants. All these factors made this international conference

the only system that allows for applications that are customised to the needs of railway operators. Kapsch CarrierCom supplies the GSM-R network, the GSM-R regulator network and the fibre optic SDH transmission network. The company also conducts feasibility studies, constructs and installs the GSM-R sites and assists in training SNTF and ANESRIF staff members. Today, the railway projects in Algeria are a continuing success story for Kapsch CarrierCom. The company could more than adequately meet challenges ranging from geographic ones constituting a varied landscape of mountains, valleys and deserts in Algeria to technological, operational and legal challenges of long distances, multiple vendors for different systems, and local employment rules. Kapsch CarrierCom along with ANESRIF, SNTF, local partners, and sub-contractors were able to successfully implement the Algerian GSM-R network on several lines. Following the Algerian success story, Kapsch is looking to increase its penetration in the region by opening an office in the United Arab Emirates shortly. Around the world, with around 50 per cent market share in terms of trackkilometres covered by GSM-R infrastructure Kapsch CarrierCom is primed to strengthen its position as the GSM-R market leader over the next few years. — Latha Krishnan

Zeman Bauelemente, set up in Austria in 1965 as a structural steel fabrication company, has undergone continuous growth and improvement. It has now emerged as an international corporate grouping with more than 20 locations and a workforce of over 600. Zeman has developed and patented several technological innovations in its field, enabling it to provide a wide product range comprising everything from plant and mechanical engineering for heavy industry to sales halls and warehouses, architectural steel construction and sports facilities. It also offers comprehensive services including consulting and planning as well as project implementation, fabrication and erection. In 2006, the machinery operation of Zeman successfully entered the UAE market with the supply of highly innovative continuous sandwich panel and roll forming lines to TIGER Profiles. Since then Zeman has been supplying innovative machines, such as ROOFER for fully automated production of standing seam panels (curved, convex, concave, tapered), SIN beam machine for the production of light weight corrugated web profiles, and roll forming part for continuous sandwich production line in addition to service and maintenance of these machines through highly reputed sub-suppliers in the UAE. It also provides design and engineering support for challenging steel

projects especially with a view to Zeman SIN beams. “The Middle East region and the UAE in particular is a very important market for us and we want to introduce potential customers here to our innovative machines and show them how they can revolutionise the present steel construction work (assembling, welding) by implementing our fully automated steel beam assembler. Most of our innovations are triggered and driven by technical inputs from our clients. For this revolutionary machine — Steel Beam Assembler (SBA) — we have been requested by Tiger Steel to invent something completely new. And Zeman has successfully solved this challenge,” informs Dr Andreas Hofer, Managing and Sales Director of Zeman Bauelemente. The SBA performs all the steps involved in fabricating a steel member with computer-

controlled robots executing the CAD engineering drawings 1:1 — with no errors, and in a fraction of the time that would otherwise be needed if the work were done manually. The fully automated production line can be used for practically any type of steel beam that includes add-on parts. The individual components arrive on a conveyor at one end, and emerge a short time later at the other end as a perfectly assembled steel beam that then only needs to be given a protective coating and loaded onto a truck. “We will be presenting the SBA and our SIN beam machine at SteelFab 2012. Our participation is part of our long-term growth strategy here. We will make Zeman a well-known brand for continuous innovations and technical improvements in this rather conventional business of surrounding structural steel fabrication,” says Hofer.

MEDICAL TOURISM

AustriacaresforYOU

Austria has a world-class healthcare system. Austrian companies in the healthcare sector are extraordinarily well-equipped not only to compete on an international scale but also to be world leaders in their field. With the growing population of the GCC, increasing health issues relating to lifestyle and to a rapidly ageing population, the need to send patients abroad for any kind of treatments will remain and grow as long as the healthcare system of the GCC remains on a growth trajectory. This is when Austria, renowned for its medical expertise, steps in. The Austrian Trade Commission explains how this European country with its competitive pricing and qualitative medical care can make a difference to the current GCC healthcare system.

In a recent television documentary Arab tourists were asked what made Austria such an attractive destination for the vast country. The answer was surprising, it is health consciousness that motivates an increasing number of tourists from all over the world to come to Austria to recover from the strain of everyday life, to guard against illness and to access health treatment. Every year Austria receives approximately 30 million visitors who not only come to Austria to enjoy the climate and beautiful landscape but also to seek medical advice and to recuperate. However, it is not just Austria’s celebrated medical history, world-class medical facilities but also the country’s commitment to provide excellent healthcare to citizens around the world that stands out. Take for instance the GCC countries’ need to send patients abroad for any kind of treatments due to growing population, increasing health issues relating to lifestyle and to a rapidly ageing population while dealing with a healthcare system that remains on a growth trajectory. This is when Austria renowned for its global medical expertise steps in. Especially since Austria’s position with

regards to the Gulf countries’ expected quality, pricing, language barriers, cultural understanding and travelling regulation does not differ from the expectation towards its European neighbours. Austria has an excellent track record when it comes to medical discovery and inventions. With no fewer than six Nobel prizes in physiology and medicine, Austria demonstrates the enormous capacity for innovation and strong research capabilities of the universities and business community in this relatively small country. Robert Barany was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1914 for his work in physiology and pathology in vestibular apparatus. Julis WagnerJauregg was honoured in 1927 for his discovery of the therapeutic value of malaria inoculation in the treatment of dementia, closely followed in 1930 by Karl Landsteiner for his discovery of human blood groups. In 1936, Otto Loewi was presented with the prize for discoveries relating to chemical transmission of nerve impulses. Konrad Lorenz, famous for his studies of graylag geese and Karl Von Frisch were jointly honoured in 1973 for discoveries concerning the organisation and elicitation of individual and

social behaviour patterns. The most recent winner is Eric R Kandel who in 2000 was commended for discoveries concerning signal transduction in the nervous system. It should therefore come as no surprise that Austria has a world-class healthcare system. The Austrian social health insurance scheme covers almost the entire population. 10.1 per cent of GDP is spent on the healthcare provision. Austria is home to 115 private nursing homes and rehabilitation centres and as well as over 900 wellness establishments. This means that Austrian companies in this sector are extraordinarily well-equipped not only to compete on an international scale but also to be world leaders in their field. Products and services from Austria enjoy an excellent reputation in regard to quality and ingenuity. Austria is recognised in the medical product and pharmaceutical market. Qatar and Oman for example still hold accounts in their embassies for treatments abroad for Austria. And Austria’s reputation is not only known to the experts in the medical sector, even celebrities are paying attention to Austria’s expertise. For example, the American movie

star John Malkovich and Prince Ernst August von Hannover sought the expertise of Austrian trauma surgeons after the accidents. Lauding and supporting the Austrian healthcare system and its impact on the country’s economy, Dr Wolfgang Penzias, Austrian Trade Commissioner for the GCC, says, “Advances in chemistry and pharmaceuticals as well as in new health and medical technologies are among the major driving forces of Austria’s export growth. But for the Austrian economy, this is more than just exports — in order to reach a new client base and to make most of the opportunities available, Austrian companies have had to demonstrate a firm commitment to internationalisation and global communications. It is this dedication of Austrian companies to provide excellent healthcare system in the GCC that the Austrian Trade Commission would like to support.” For more information on Austria, please do not hesitate to contact the Austrian Trade Commission in Abu Dhabi by Email: abudhabi@advantageaustria.org or call Tel: 02-6433988.

VIVA MAYR

ProvidingmodernMayr-medicine anditsbenefits VIVA THERAPY AND TRAINING HAS HELPED MANY PATIENTS FROM THE REGION WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES TO EAT THE RIGHT FOOD IN THE RIGHT WAY AND EXERCISE EFFECTIVELY THUS ENABLING THEM TO REDUCE MEDICATION TO ZERO Latha Krishnan Viva Centre for Modern Mayr Medicine in southern Austria on Lake Worth, offers new-generation Mayr medicine, combining both conventional and alternative medicine. The Mayr cure named after Dr Franz Xaver Mayr (1875 to 1965) recognises and emphasises the importance of the digestive system for healthy nutrition. Dr Harald Stossier, Medical Director of the Viva Centre, has expanded the original concepts of the classic Mayr cure to create the Modern Mayr Medicine approach to promoting optimal health. Detoxification is the core element of any treatment programme at Viva Mayr with an emphasis on rest, strict cleansing of the digestive system and re-education of eating habits. It takes time to change from unhealthy lifestyle practices and establish a healthy habit. So Viva recommends staying at the Viva Centre for at least three weeks. When a patient registers at Viva, a medical doctor sees the patient first and according to the result of the examination he/she is put in the kind of care individually tailored for him/her. The therapy plan supports the necessary elimination of metabolic waste deposits, individualised rebalancing of minerals, gentle hyperthermia and other natural therapies. There are 40 rooms to house a maximum of 50 guests with 60 staff members giving

intensive therapy that is also medically orientated. When they leave the clinic, patients from the Middle East and the UAE in particular can receive aftercare at Dubai Herbal Treatment Centre (DHTC), with whom Viva partners to provide its services. Viva began the partnership with DHTC in early 2011 and at present is the only Viva treatment centre in the region. New patients can also enrol at DHTC for examination and diagnosis and go to Austria later. “From this region, we receive many diabetic patients and people wanting detoxification or cleansing of their digestive systems. Viva therapy and training has helped many of them with Type 2 diabetes to eat the right food in the right way and with exercise so effectively that when they continue it as lifestyle they have been able to reduce medication to zero,” informs

Dr Stossier, who has been practising Mayr medicine for more than 20 years and is now periodically visiting Dubai. When he is here, he meets about a dozen patients in a day. “Meeting 12 people in a day may not look very impressive but I am happy that I have these appointments because I get to know about the people here and their lifestyles, which I feel is typical of life in big cities — stressful with no time for rest and rejuvenation. At the same time it is also very encouraging that more and more people are becoming conscious about health issues and the importance of being in good health. We aid them to realise that if they want to be healthy they should practise a good combination of preparing and eating the right food in the right way, and a minimum of physical exercise. At Viva, we give people the kick-off to a new and healthy lifestyle.”

Long-haul comfort: Sit back and relax on our lie-flat sleeper seat — around two metres in length and equipped with a massage function, soft pillow and warm blanket, it will ensure you sleep as soundly as if your head were resting on the clouds outside the window. On night flights, we’ll be more than happy to cover your blanket or pillow with crisp, white bed linen. Spend a couple of hours watching a film on the personal screen built into every seat,

Find out more at www.jetfriends.com. or lose yourself in the music from our audio programme — in Dolby Surround quality — on the unique noise-cancelling headphones we supply. Culinary highlights: Long-haul flights in Austrian Business Class are a very special experience: Our flight attendants pamper you with a multi-course meal created by DO & CO and refined and served on board the aircraft by the Austrian Flying Chef. Your meal begins with a greeting from the kitchen, followed by a choice of soup and starters from the trolley, and three different main courses. A selection of desserts and cheeses then makes your gastronomic experience complete. Our in-flight sommelier will recommend the perfect wine to complement your meal, and to finish, you can watch the clouds flit by in the Coffee House above the Clouds, where we’ll be

happy to serve you a typically Austrian speciality coffee such as mocha with whipped cream or a melange. Lounges: In the lounges, we pamper you with culinary treats and drinks all day long, so you can simply retire to a quiet corner, to work or read in peace and quiet. An Austrian Business Class ticket gives you access to all the Austrian, Lufthansa and SWISS lounges around the world before your departure. HON Circle members, Senators and Star Alliance Gold members can also use all Star Alliance Gold lounges.* * Booked on a Star Alliance flight JetFriends! OMV

Significantcontributortoenergysector OMV, AN INTEGRATED OIL AND GAS COMPANY TO INCREASE OIL AND GAS EXPLORATION AND PRODUCTION IN THE MIDDLE EAST Latha Krishnan OMV, an integrated oil and gas company with strong, profitable growth in the exploration and production (E&P) business, was founded in 1956 in Vienna, Austria. With group sales of 23.32 billion euros (Dh119.63 billion) and a workforce of around 31,500 employees in 2010, OMV is one of the largest listed industrial companies in Austria. Based on a strong domestic gas and oil production business, OMV began its international E&P business in 1985, starting exploration in Libya and later in the Middle East and in the Caspian Region. Currently well-positioned in the Middle East region, OMV has developed major operations in Pakistan since 1991, Yemen, since 2004 and in the Kurdistan region of Iraq since 2008. OMV is the operator in all three countries with a total production rate of approximately 14,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) in Pakistan and approximately 6,600 boe/d in Yemen in 2010.

In Pakistan, OMV is now well on the way to achieve the goal of increasing equity production to around 25,000 boe/d by 2014. In Yemen, OMV has gained a very strong presence and holds five exploration and production licences. In the Kurdistan region of Iraq OMV conducts exploration activities in five blocks out of which three are operated. Whichever part of the world they may be, OMV operations are characterised by the highest safety standards, highly skilled local workforce and application of the latest technology. Tackling the challenges of working in harsh desert environments adeptly OMV is ready to provide integrated solutions relying on its very strong team of local and international experts. With its operational successes in the region OMV is looking to develop its portfolio here and become a partner of choice in other Middle East countries including the UAE. The evidence to that end is that

since 1994, the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) of Abu Dhabi has been a shareholder of OMV and increased its shareholding from 20.4 per cent to 24.9 per cent recently. In 2007, OMV opened an office in Abu Dhabi to execute screening of business opportunities and to co-ordinate its existing activities in the Middle East region. In future, the Abu Dhabi office could also serve as a hub for procurement, drilling and operational support. In line with OMV’s Strategy 2021 the target is to raise equity production in the Middle East.
