Stepping Stone To Success

Andrew Moss Head Teacher at Gordon’s School, talks about the ideal environment provided for students at the iconic educational institution

Ever considered a UK boarding education? Find out the wonderful avenues it opens up for your child

UK boarding education is increasingly becoming popular with local and expat families living in the Middle East; provides stability of education, and a stepping-stone to university and educational support in a safe secure environment. One of the most valuable gifts we can give our children is an education, the opportunity to be the best they can be, to unlock their potential and give them support and encouragement. You may have a number of different options when choosing your child’s educational pathway and

it is well worth looking at them all, with an open mind before making a decision. So, what is boarding school life really like? Structured, busy, providing opportunities to try new activities, being with friends 24/7; the school days are longer and include time for homework (called ‘prep’), the weeks may be longer too with Saturday morning school and sports matches on a Saturday afternoon. The facilities for sport and the arts are excellent and would fulfil the dreams of any budding actor, golfer, singer, footballer, or dancer. Imagine having access to those facilities throughout the school day, after school and even on weekends. The boarding house becomes central to boarding life, as well as a bedroom (or dorm), offering a place to relax with friends and as parents, this is likely to be your first point of contact. The boarding experience encourages independence, confidence, courtesy, courage, kindness and compassion from living in a diverse and truly international environment. Students are encouraged to develop skills in leadership, risk evaluation, problem solving, team working, organisation and decision-making — excellent preparation for life beyond school. If you would like to consider the option of a UK boarding education, please contact us today. For over 20 years, we have been offering families free impartial

t St Joseph’s College in Ipswich, we are proud to offer the very best of a traditional English boarding education. For us, the impressive academic results, renowned sporting prowess, and outstanding creative and performing arts are testament to our core principles: aspiration, respect and confidence, all underpinned by Christian values. We appreciate each student as an individual, seeing potential in everyone, and natural talents just waiting to be discovered and unleashed. We think of ourselves as a family; day students, boarders, teachers, support staff and parents all contribute to the overall strength of St Joseph’s. We trust one another.

Pastoral care is central to everything we do. We take happiness seriously, understanding that happy children and young people have the confidence to perform their best, whether in the exam hall, on stage under a spotlight, facing a delivery at the wicket or pitching for a prefect post. We also understand that boarders need the extra care that comes with being away from home, sometimes halfway around the world. Our warm, family-overseen boarding hous-

es are home to full, weekly, flexi and occasional boarders, both domestic and international. We value and celebrate their global outlook while helping them settle into life with us on our beautiful and safe campus in Suffolk. inner of the Tes Boarding School of the Year 2022, Gordon’s was established in 1885 at the request of Queen Victoria and is a nonselective state boarding school in Woking’s West End, Surrey. Over the years, Gordon’s School has developed into one of the leading boarding schools in the UK and is officially listed as one of Britain’s outstanding schools by the late Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector for both 2014 and 2019. The school is situated in 50-acres of beautiful grounds with generous facilities, and seeks to provide a worldclass education that ensures all students learn how to be the best they can be. Gordon’s School is not just built on academic and sporting success, but on a rich history and heritage, befitting its status as

the national memorial to General Gordon. Judged as ‘Outstanding’ by OFSTED in the last four inspections, Gordon’s School has become synonymous for academic excellence. The school offers its students a choice of over 50 co-curricular activities every day, including sport, CCF, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme or a hobby. Students also compete in MUN; debating and public speaking competitions and can study for nationally recognised qualifications through the ILM Awards in leadership and management. The school of 946 students, including 271 residential boarders, is partnered with Harlequins, Superleague netball’s Surrey Storm and Vanarama League Football Club Aldershot Town FC and boasts sportsmen and women competing for their country in hockey, golf, netball, rugby, and sailing. There are three main admission points, year seven, nine and sixth form. Students coming into the sixth form are attracted by the range of academic options and co-curricular activities as well as extensive next steps advice, help with revision and applying to universities. Scholarships are offered to those demonstrating excellence and potential in sports or the arts. The real judgement of Gordon’s is the students, the friendliness, discipline and vibrancy throughout the school, and by the family atmosphere and rapport between staff and students.

BOARDING SCHOOL A Bright Future

Thriving For Excellence W

estonbirt School is a hidden gem nestled in the rolling Cotswold countryside. Built as a private estate in the mid-1800s, its inspiring setting provides a wonderful backdrop for children to learn and be inspired. Natasha Dangerfield, Head of Westonbirt School, has been in post long enough to set about a significant transformation and the school is proud to have been one of the few all-girls schools to have smoothly transitioned to a fully co-educational environment. With a growing roll and several new building projects completed, underway or in preparation, the school is one of the finest Southwest boarding environments, testified by the ‘excellent’ received in the most recent inspection visits for both education and personal development. Tatler’s reviews are equally impressive. ‘Westonbirt is a school that turns out girls, and now boys, brimming with kindness and confidence in a broad range of areas.’ The Good Schools Guide thinks: ‘The wow factor starts to build as

soon as you turn in through the narrow gate” and this is certainly the case; the range of opportunity is as exciting as the building, which then unfolds, as the school presents itself in all of its glory.’ With a holistic approach, Dangerfield explains that opportunity is key: “Ensuring that each child has a journey through school which allows breadth, depth and an opportunity to reach an excellent standard is key. Children need to be able to aspire to do well and to want to reach for more and we have to provide that. We are proud as a school to not be known for one particular area but to create a platform where experts in all subjects and activities can inspire our students to want to be the best version of themselves.” “We have been impressed with how well our child is known at Westonbirt,” says one parent. “The influence that the staff have on my child has made such a difference; her enjoyment of school has turned on its head, we cannot be more grateful.”

oughborough Grammar School (LGS) was founded in 1495 and is one of the ten oldest independent boys’ schools in the country. The school educates some 880 boys, including 76 boarders, from the ages of 10-18. The success of the boarding community has been an enriching part of LGS for much of its long history. The institute’s boarding is a concentration of the very best the school offers, condensed into two wonderfully welcoming houses within the campus. We also provide the flexibility of either termly or weekly boarding; with the option of staying on campus during exeat weekends. The housemasters arrange a varied programme of non-academic activities for boarders at evenings and weekends, which includes sports clubs, mountain biking, ten-pin bowling, going to watch professional football and rugby events, and regular visits to London. Academic achievement has always been our focus, as examination grades open doors and our results speak for themselves. However, our

ambition for every boy is much broader. LGS boys have unparalleled opportunity to develop their passions and skills and acquire the emotional intelligence needed to thrive in the world and grow into young men of character. Just like the day pupils, boarders are also provided support individually, cared for, and cared about, and encouraged to make the most of all the opportunities that such a high-achieving school provides. Co-curricular choice is enhanced by the Thomas Burton Award scheme; a unique programme under the core strands of ‘Hands, Heads and Heart’, which blends sports, music, drama as well as over 100 clubs, embracing everything from beekeeping to flying drones. Everywhere you look, you will discover a school bursting with activity, where boys have huge respect for the varied talents of their peers and learn as much outside the classroom as within. It is this happy fusion of work and play which is our implicit hallmark.
