he College of American Pathologists (CAP) is a leading organisation of prominent pathologists, who promote excellence in the field of pathology and laboratory medicine. Its various accreditation programmes — laboratory, forensic drug testing, biorepository, reproductive and CAP 15189 — are aimed at improving patient safety. The
organisation achieves this by setting the bar high. With quality education, standard setting, and ensuring that laboratories meet or exceed their regulatory requirements, CAP has ensured efficiency and accuracy in the medical field. A lab is awarded CAP accreditation only after a thorough process. Once a facility successfully acquires a CAP accreditation, it becomes part of an exclusive group of more than 7,000 laboratories worldwide. These laboratories take pride in the fact that they have met the highest standards of excellence. CAP accreditation can have a positive influence on performance in other areas of healthcare by allowing laboratories to demonstrate high standards of service delivery. The Center For Advanced Biomedical Research and Innovation is closely involved in the development of clinical practice The Center For Advanced Biomedical Research and Innovation (CABRI) was inaugurated on January 13, 2014, by His Highness Shaikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman. CABRI has three main areas of function — clinical research, high complexity laboratory testing for super-specialities, and statistical support for analysis of clinical research data and the generation of evidencebased clinical practice. In 2014-2015, many new super speciality tests have been launched by CABRI. They include Neo-natal Screening of infants for various inborn errors of metabolism, HLA B Allele Specific Sequencing, Beta Thalassemia Mutation Detection by PCR, Chromosomal Analysis, Microarray based genetic testing and Immunohistochemical assays for cancer screening. The clinical research facility coordinates and collaborates with those in the industry for sponsored research, enhances facultyinitiated research, and supports student research. Many students train part-time as research assistants to enhance their skills and experience. CABRI plays a major role in enhancing clinical research as envisaged by its Founder and President Thumbay Moideen.
CABRI has widened its scope by way of industry tie-ups for studies in the area of occupational health and has developed affordable health and preventive packages for corporate employers to screen employees for critical illnesses and health risks. The bio-analytical team of scientists of CABRI is closely involved in the industry to develop unique tests. The Statistical Support facility of CABRI provides support to the industry in the analysis of data. CABRI also plays an important role in postgraduate teaching and training. Students have access to many specialised equipment, methods and technologies for hands-on training. CABRI has been facilitating diagnostic testing for the community at large through its growing clientele as well as research projects of students and faculty of Gulf Medical University. CABRI aims to be one of the leading high complexity laboratories of the region and an innovation centre providing quality healthcare for communities as well as producing high-quality biomedical research. Recently, CABRI has been accredited by the College of American Pathologists, a unique achievement that positions CABRI as the only CAP-accredited laboratory in the Northern Emirates. With this important feather in its cap, CABRI is planning to introduce more new and unique high complexity tests in the days ahead. The Thumbay Group envisages that similar accreditations are obtained for all its chain of hospitals and laboratories situated in different emirates, which will position them as leaders in the healthcare industry of the UAE.
