The President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan In the UAE, economic growth indicators, although very important, have never been measured by the amount of success made in the goods produced or services offered, but by the quality of life and the added value offered. They are also measured by the balanced and sustainable development, and by the job opportunities created and training provided. Our goal is to make our country the best and most secure place for all community members.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai As we are getting fully geared for Expo 2020 Dubai in October, we will seize the opportunity to showcase to the entire world our best potential across all fronts. We will show to the whole world that our country has become a role model for development and progress. We will spare no efforts to advancing our country and will never hesitate to transfer our experience and knowledge to our brothers and friends.

ust as the UAE set out on its journey towards economic and industrial development, Ducab emerged in 1979 to become a regional contender in the world of cable manufacturing. Armed with innovative foresight and strategic leadership, it aligned itself with the visionary growth of the UAE, and embarked on an exciting mission to connect businesses and support trade with state-of-the-art cables and overhead lines. Ducab’s entry into the market as the UAE’s first cable manufacturing facility mirrored the phenomenal growth and development of the country itself. In the last 40 years, the company demonstrated a steadfast commitment towards adopting the highest quality standards, and its efforts to be recognised as a leading manufacturer of high-quality power cables in the Middle East continues to this day. Dedication to quality is deeply embedded in the social fabric of the company, as we take to heart the wise words of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai: “Quality is not merely an end. It has become a way of life”. With this in mind, Ducab worked towards establishing a strong portfolio featuring a complete range of energy cables, accessories and services up to 400kV, from six state-ofthe-art facilities in the UAE. In a bid to strengthen this relationship, a landmark agreement in early 2009 took place between Ducab and two major utilities — DEWA and De-

partment of Energy — to manufacture high voltage cable systems. To further reinforce the UAE’s industrial supply chain, Ducab Aluminium Company (DAC) in the Khalifa Industrial Zone of Abu Dhabi (Kizad) was formed in 2018 as a joint venture between Ducab and Senaat, one of the largest holding companies in the UAE’s industrial sector. Young Emiratis are the lifeline of the country and hold the keys to raise the nation as an international business hub. In an ode to youth and their prowess, Ducab hosts an exclusive National Development Programme, aimed at generating career progression and development through fullemployment within the company. From a small team of futureforward dreamers to its current strength of 1,600 employees, Ducab has proudly grown to serve clients across the UAE and the wider Middle East, Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. As Ducab commemorates 40 years of success in the country, I would like to emphasise that Ducab owes its growth to the faith and support of its partners and customers, complemented by our dedicated and passionate workforce and their enduring belief in the visions and goals of the firm.

New head office goes greeN From the outset, the headquarters building has been designed to be environmentally efficient and aims to achieve LEED Gold, Dubai Green Building and Safat Silver sustainability targets. The ground and first floors allow for a central core and double-height foyer serving open plan office wings to either side. The upper floor features outdoor planted terrace area, cafeteria, training rooms and an executive boardroom within a feature cantilever over the main entrance. The philosophy is to shift the headquarters towards being a place of employee well-being. The upper floor provides a break from the daily business which is intended to manifest itself in a happier, more productive working environment. The roof has been designed to be free from the mechanical plant, providing an uncluttered aesthetic and leaving the space available for both occupant use and solar panels. A portion of the building’s energy demands is met by on-site energy production, contributing to the building’s sustainability credentials. Ramboll provided

full project management and design services to the client, including architecture, mechanical and electrical engineering, sustainability consultancy, structural engineering, acoustics, contractor tendering management, cost consultancy, local authority liaison, and architect of record services. “Ducab's sustainability programmes are based on three major ideas: rationalisation and reduction of waste, reduction of carbon footprints, and the policy of industrialisation especially with regard to the purchase of equipment and raw materials.” reNewable eNergy strategies As the global energy sector evolves, Ducab has created products specifically suited to the needs of alternative energy categories. Its SolarBICC line of cables and wires is an ideal choice for solar projects. The company was also the first cable manufacturer in the world to introduce and qualify sustainable halogen-free nuclear cables — NuBICC. In the area of wind energy, bespoke solutions for global customers have been developed. coNservatioN iNitiatives To preserve the environment, the organisation recycles scrap copper from the daily operations of its cable factories, allowing it to recycle up to 100 per cent of the copper scrap produced by its factories in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. It also imposes strict measures for the treatment and refining of waste water through the establishment of dedicated stations. It refines up to 100 per cent of those wastewaters and reuses them for irrigation purposes. Ducab further works with strategic partners from both public and private sectors to support and preserve the environment, part of a joint initiative, launched with the International Copper Association to reduce use of energy. solar Power Project The use of solar power in the UAE

Roof top Solar Power plant Installation has become an inevitable reality and with the rise of energy cost. The solar solution is a strategic initiative that has been decided by Ducab many years ago. "As part of Ducab’s go green initiative, we are going to use Solar energy as it helps in combating the harmful emissions of greenhouse gases and thus helps to reduce global warming. It also helps to save CO2 emission foot print and establish long-term energy security for the company,"

said Samih Zamzam, Head of Manufacturing and Project lead on the Solar Plant. The organisation has a high electrical load consumption and alternative ways of generating electricity is now more important than ever before. Aligned with Dubai's initiative to rely less on fossil fuel power and more on sustainable energy, Ducab is keen to invest in solar power plants in all its manufacturing facilities in phased manner.

Ducab has signed a contract with Etihad Energy Services Company LLC (Etihad Esco LLC, a subsidiary of Dewa) for the implementation of Phase -1 solar power project. The modern smart net metering system allows for the actual electricity consumption reading and actual electricity production reading. The excess energy produced will be connecting back to supply grid. The project is expected to complete by the end of April 2020.

An insider view of setting benchmarks across the globe Mohamed AlAhmedi, General Manager, Ducab Metal Business, shares his perspective on the company’s position today, and Ducab's international strategy in 2020 and beyond Ducab is one of the UAE’s oldest and leadingmanufacturerofenergycables in the Middle East. Tell us about its brand history. The year 2019 marked 40 years since the founding of Ducab, a company jointly owned by Investment Corporation of Dubai and Abu Dhabi General Holding Corp (Senaat). Now one of the UAE’s flagship manufacturing entities, Ducab was inaugurated by the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum in 1979, with its first facility located in Jebel Ali and staffed by 86 employees. Over four decades, Ducab has expanded in parallel with the UAE’s wider investments in industrial manufacturing, now outlined in plans such as the Dubai Industrial Strategy 2030 and the Abu Dhabi 2030 vision. With over 1,600 employees, today Ducab comprises three business units with six manufacturing facilities across four sites in the UAE. By staying at the forefront of global quality standards and pursuing its own R&D agenda, Ducab has also gone from supporting solely UAE businesses to now serving customers worldwide in the fields of energy, general construction, defense, rail transport, mining and other industry verticals. Today Ducab exports around 60 per cent of its production across business units to the wider Middle East, Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. The overall exports sales of the organisation have quadrupled in number in the last two decades. When did Ducab set up base in Kizad,

khaleejtimes.com

whatarethebenefitsthatthecompany has accrued from this association? In 2014, Senaat and Ducab announced a joint venture to develop DAC, a 50,000-tonne per annum aluminum rod mill in KIZAD. DAC was inaugurated in early 2018, the result of an investment of Dh220 million (US$60 million). Located in Kizad, Abu Dhabi, the plant manufactures Electrical Conductive grade and aluminum alloy rods, wires, and bare overhead conductors through environmentally friendly processes, using liquid aluminium supplied from EGA’s smelter in Taweelah. Receiving aluminium as molten metal eliminates the need for DAC to use high energy to re-melt it before use. This saves both costs and environmental emissions, increasing the competitiveness of the growing UAE aluminium fabrication industry. In its first year of operations, DAC performed well. As reported in our 2018 financial results, we achieved total sales of over Dh300 million for the year, contributing to a year-onyear increase in group sales for Ducab as a whole of around seven per cent. What are Ducab’s expansion plans, are there any new sectors that Ducab is planning to tap? Ducab is constantly seeking ways to further expand its international reach. Currently, we supply to partners in numerous markets around the world, and we are keen to build upon this. Our products are taking ‘Made in the UAE’ across the globe, and we want to continue to expand upon the UAE’s international reputation as a manufacturer of products that meet global standards – or even set new ones, as is the case with our NuBICC line of nuclear power cables. Please share Ducab’s manufacturing capacity at the Kizad plant, as well as other relevant statistics and figures. DAC has the capacity to provide

Mohamed AlAhmedi General Manager, Ducab Metal Business 50,000 metric tonnes of aluminium rod, out of which 18,000 is being converted to overhead conductor on site. When it comes to exports in particular, we’re looking at around 90 per cent of output being exported outside the UAE. DAC products are sold to customers across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the wider MENA region, the United States, India, North Africa, East and West Africa. Further expansions are also being considered for Latin America and Europe in the near future. Kizad is setting regional benchmarks by promoting its abilities as a full industrial and business ecosystem. How do you see its product and service offerings improving even further in the near future? The development of any business ecosystem is always beneficial, as it provides increased opportunities for those already within the ecosystem, as well as any new parties entering it for the first time. When an establishment such as Kizad is able to provide an extended offering — especially when it sets new benchmarks regionally — it attracts new businesses into it. This helps to build solid network that other businesses can then benefit from.

Dac aims to strengthen the UaE’s industrial supply chain in line with the national strategy to enhance industrial investment opportunities across the country. March, 2020
