he sea has long served the UAE as a port of trade, prior to the development of land and air transport. The country shares an intimate relationship with surrounding water bodies with traditions deeply rooted in maritime activities. Businesses used the channel as a means to purchase or sell goods ranging from consumables to other services. As the UAE transformed from a barren desert land, where livelihood was sourced from fishing and pearl diving, to a sophisticated metropolitan platform for people around the world to gather, the maritime hub also evolved to gain stronger foothold in the scene. Armed with a strategic location, the country initiated a number of developments exclusively dedicated to the mode that has led to bustling initiatives. This in turn has further helped the nation grow as a lucrative hub. With an eye on booming potential,

the gateway has led to establishment of niche platforms that aim to serve those new and seasoned in the industry with a base to share a plethora of information and opportunities that can benefit both the individual as well as the economy of their respective nations. Regulating the flow of industry, the Dubai Council for Marine and Maritime Industries is an example of an authority body that represents the sector. It maintains a safe and booming maritime environment that eventually contributes to enhancing Dubai’s position as one of the leading maritime points. The Dubai Maritime Summit, organised by the Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA), is scheduled to run from October 28 until October 30 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event will also host the Seatrade Maritime Awards 2014, Seatrade Middle East Maritime Exhibition (SMEM) as well as the Global Workboats Technology Forum, which will feature an economic forum covering a wide range of topics including ship re-

cycling, offshore oil and gas, bunkering, port investment and logistics, and ship repair and refurbishment. “DMCA announced the expansion of the agenda of the Dubai Maritime Summit via the inclusion of Dubai Maritime Summit — an important international maritime event. This year’s edition of the event follows the successful inaugural edition of the Dubai Maritime Summit in 2012 and supports our continuing efforts to consolidate Dubai’s position as a global maritime centre, as well as our goal to reinforce Dubai’s footprint in the international maritime landscape, guided by the directives of our wise leadership,” said Amer Ali, Executive Director, DMCA. The international and regional fleet, comprising of maritime experts, senior government officials, industry professionals, and ship owners, seek to discuss the latest maritime trends and explore the best industry practices to help promote sustainable development across Dubai’s maritime sector. — farhana@khaleejtimes.com

Biennial Seatrade Middle East Maritime conference returns to Dubai to highlight capacity and diverse range of refit, repair and refurbishment that Gulf dry dock operations International and regional shipping operators, ports, financiers and maritime professionals will meet in Dubai at the forthcoming Seatrade Middle East Maritime (SMEM) summit and exhibition to discuss the opportunities and challenges that global fleet growth will present to the region as it steadily develops into a worldclass centre of excellence for ship repair and refurbishment. The three-day event has dedicated a panel session to ship repair, which has attracted high profile experts including Geoffrey Taylor, Managing Director, Topaz Marine Engineering, UAE and Lars Seistrop, Managing Director, Damen Shipyards Sharjah, and Albwardy Marine Engineering, UAE, who will debate the issues surrounding ship repair and refurbishment. “The Middle East is a world-class centre of excellence for ship repair with a number of well respected shipyards already offering a diverse range of services. We are seeing new joint ventures between the region and Asia in the dry dock sector, with the Gulf set to offer the largest ship repair capacity outside of China,” noted Chris Hayman, Chairman of Seatrade, organisers of Seatrade

Middle East Maritime. According to Drewry Maritime Research’s Q1 2014 report ‘Ship Operating Costs Annual Review and Forecast’, ship operators remained under pressure to keep operating costs to a minimum in 2013, due to weak freight earnings, with restrictive repairs and maintenance
regimes instigated in order to counter rises in expenditure. This was supported by last year’s weak steel prices, but with new regulations and an element of catch-up in repair due, Drewry expects repair and maintenance expenditure to rise by at least 2.5 to 3 per cent per annum over the next two years. “The thorny issue of maintaining fleets for operational readiness whilst maximising commercial capacity is a constant concern for both shipyards and vessel owners, but with increased capacity in the region, the Middle East is perfectly positioned as a key geographical access point for quality repair, maintenance and refitting services,” said Hayman. According to 2013 data, Drewry Maritime Research expects global container port demand to grow by just over 5 per cent per annum through to 2017, exceeding 800 million TEUs per year; and this expected growth is more than the entire 2012 throughput of North America, Europe and the Middle East combined. This and other sector drivers such as the expansion of offshore projects and the implementation of new technical regulations for the shipping industry will also be discussed, with the panel set to share details of a newly-researched, in-depth competition analysis, alongside the issue of how to introduce best practices to maintain a continual updated diversity of improved ship
