Within a short time, the UAE has established an excellent and diversified system of schools and universities. K-12 curriculum in the UAE strikes a fine balance between learning and dexterity. Complemented by qualified teachers from across the globe, the country is dotted with international schools that balance courses on language speaking and writing, extra-curricular activities, creativity and interaction with others of the same age. Students enrolled in K-12 schools in the UAE also become independent at an early age, nurturing freedom of individual thinking and action. They are also well adept in self-study, and far more tech-savvy than previous generations. Educational institutions in the country provide various facilities to further increase the number

of student enrolments. For instance, several schools offer discounts for students joining in the inaugural year. Institutions also offer scholarships and reduced fees for siblings. Apart from expat students, Emirati students also enrol in private educational institutions to obtain higher education. Most private institutions have an international accreditation, which makes them a good starting point for an international career. Aside from private universities, the UAE also has a host of international universities that majorly cater to expat students. These are branches of well-known and high-quality foreign educational institutions housed in the UAE, such as RIT University, Sorbonne, Murdoch University, Amity University, and NIS in the Emirates. Recently, the Ministry of Education participated at the world’s largest educational technology show BETT. In addition to showcasing its innovative educational technology capabilities and renowned

At BETT, Hussain bin Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Minister of Education, said: “The UAE has become one of the prominent and attractive global destinations for visitors from different countries to visit, work, study or live in, due to its social stability, cosmopolitan environment, human and development capabilities and strategic plans that enhance individual progress, which aids in its society development.” During BETT, the Ministry of Education also presented the ‘Advanced Skills Strategy’, aimed at establishing the concept of ‘Lifelong Learning’ for all UAE nationals and residents.

xam season is around the corner, and for students and parents, this time is one of the most stressful periods. However, as students find themselves dealing with pressure, it’s the parents who can ease that and help them to relax. Probably to emphasis that fact and as a reminder to the parents, the principal of International Indian School — Damman, Saudi Arabia, came up with a letter. The letter, shared on social media, has gained applauds of approval worldwide.

replaced by online games. Furthermore, young people are at a number of risks online, including exposure to upsetting content and cyberbullying, that will all affect their mental health. • Growing social media. Social media platforms are evolving and growing in popularity daily. Sites such as Instagram produce feelings of inadequacy as teens compare themselves and their lives to those of their peers. Social media also leads to reduced communication skills and reduced human interaction with friends. • Demands on young people. As well as the heavy pressure of exams, students often have further responsibilities that contribute to a growing amount of stress and worry. This commonly leads to exhaustion and puts these children at risk of various mental health difficulties.

A number of factors affect children and contribute to pressure that includes:

The good news is that schools can help tackle these difficulties early on, thus promoting an overall well-being. Often, even small changes can go a long way in helping somebody feel better. We look at some of the ways that schools can help promote mental health:

• Exams: The overwhelming pressure and number of exams can have a significant effect on students’ mental health. Students are stressed by the amount of information they need to know and the pressure to succeed. Most are also fearful that a poor grade will ruin their future.

Encourage Social Time: Schedule in 30 minutes or an hour every week where students can be social and focus on something other than the curriculum. Encourage them to chat with their peers and complete a task together, like a difficult problem or a challenge.

• Modern technological world: Young people now spend much more time indoors online rather than outside. A game of football in the park is being

Lunchtime clubs: Give students the opportunity to take their mind off things at lunch by running lunchtime clubs. These clubs could be for any ac-

tivity — arts and crafts, baking, drama clubs, book clubs, film clubs, etc. The sense of community will help students feel included. An Open-Door Policy: It’s essential that students know they can come and talk to you about any issues or concerns they have. Communicate this to the students so they know you’re always there to listen. You could even appoint a designated teacher for each year group who can support any students struggling. This person should ideally have training in mental health and know how to help.

Organise a Wellness Week: To really put wellbeing at the heart of your school, arrange a wellness week in your school. This will benefit both staff and students alike. For your wellness week, you could: Encourage connections: Host a sports/activities day — exercise is known to boost endorphins, so make use of this and get students and staff involved in a range of activities. Encourage students to set themselves goals (nothing too major) so they get a great self-esteem boost when they achieve it.

VI UN Education Day in Dubai 2021 Dubai was selected as a venue for the annual international observation Staff Report

U

NESCO headquarters in Paris recently announced Dubai as the host nation for its upcoming International Day of Education in 2021. The third edition of the event will be observed on January 24 next year, and demonstrates the UAE’s gaining traction as an education hub. The observation is further set to reaffirm education as a fundamental right and explore various ways it can assist in securing the future, build shared prosperity and foster peace. Aligned with Dubai’s mission to inspire, empower and engage youth, the theme of education will be incorporated throughout the six months of its Expo 2020. “The UAE believes investing in people’s welfare, knowledge and capabilities produces the greatest dividends for individuals, families and communities as a whole. We hope to leverage Expo 2020 as a platform for knowledge-sharing and look forward to celebrating next year’s International Day of Education at Expo 2020 Dubai with UNESCO and other partners, including the Centre for Research and Interdisciplinarity in Paris,” said Hind Alowais, Vice President — International Organisations and Non-Official Participants, Expo 2020 Dubai. She highlighted that education is an essential renewable resource, and provides a strong foundation to address the challenges faced in the modern world. Stefania Giannini, Assistant DirectorGeneral for Education, UNESCO, further added: “UNESCO is delighted to partner with Expo 2020 Dubai to celebrate International Education Day, on January 24, 2021. We look forward to this formidable platform for showcasing the power of education and all the talent, creativity and energy it can unleash to promote humanity’s common good and protect our shared planet.” Expo 2020’s series of events related to education is set to wrap up by bringing the global community together for RewirEd, a festival of education that aims to change the narrative from the ‘impossible’ to ‘possible’, scheduled for March 17 to 19 next year. These events will build on Expo 2020’s commitment to creating a sustainable and enduring legacy, with education pivotal to achieving that goal. Through initiatives such as Expo Live and the Global Best Practice Programme, Expo 2020 is already supporting a number of projects around the world that are improving access to quality education.

UAE: platform for edtech The country’s thirst for progress could lead to improved e-learning platforms Staff Report

I

n today’s world, digital education has become an essential part of our modern lives. Analytics show that early intervention, personalised learning and engagement factors is related to increased motivation and helps students perform better. It also brings along high levels of confidence with access to quality global content. All this has given rise to a novel industry, education technology (edtech) valued at around $16.3 billion globally last year, with China in the adoption lead. Technology is often tried, tested and co-created, and with this process in mind, the UAE stands as an ideal platform to implement e-learning. Schools can also benefit through unique co-creation with global edtech companies. When it comes to education, the UAE is uniquely diverse with a multitude of nationalities co-existing in harmony. With this comes a private education log of 17 different global curriculums, each catering to respective demands. Calculating in school fees, the UAE is the biggest international school market in the world, with fees estimated to grow around $7 billion in 2023. All this makes the UAE an influential global market for international schools. Also, the diversity of curriculums implemented provides a one-of-a kind

testing ground for edtech companies hoping to attract global clientele. The UAE is known for its strong leadership and foresight, notably in the education sector. A number of schools here are well prepared to implement digital technology, and there exists a real interest and appetite for the latest quality educational solutions. The digital mindset is present within the government as well as the residents. Reasons for this are clear. Technology is the major competitive factor in the future, and it is essential for schools to adopt edtech solutions. The UAE and the Gulf region are expected to have

around 15 million students by 2020. In this development, the private school sector has been a major force, but the UAE continues to invest heavily in the public sector as well. The fantastic thing about edtech is that it has a global demand, and as lifelong learning and learning outside of the classroom are gaining more appreciation and becoming a full-on necessity, people of all ages and with variety of backgrounds are potential edtech users — and the mini-sized version of the world of education can be found in the UAE making it the perfect base for edtech solutions.
