ermany is a growth engine for Europe, and an indispensable player in world affairs. Its global role is in transition, as it emerges as the voice of developing countries, proactively dealing with issues such as immigration, asylum, technology and investment. Today Germany is home to more than a million refugees and its foreign policy demonstrates compassion and leadership.

In the economic arena, it is second to none, as it successfully engages not only fellow European powers, but also China and the US. It has dealt with Russia in a reconciliatory manner, and serves as a bridge in brokering new vistas of cooperation, whether it is the Syrian impasse or the multi-billion-dollar energy projects across the continent. Its positive and benevolent role in the euro crisis proved beyond doubt that Germany advocates the concept of a united Europe with a single currency. The credit for this success goes to its leadership, as well as the people who believe in a society led by entrepreneurs, businessmen, artists, scientists and academicians. Germany has emerged as the central player on the international stage by remaining stable and exhibiting its resilience as the world around it changed. Berlin has held its ground and risen to new heights of success, despite the downslide in the wake of recession since 2008. Germany believes in diplomacy and reconciliation, and that is its prime strength. On the economic stage, it is more of a reflective power, and acts as a catalyst in

ventures of growth, productivity and industrial collaboration. Its gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to grow by 1.8 per cent to 2 per cent, which is a healthy indicator, keeping in view nosedive trends in the region. Likewise, exports are projected to grow at a rate of 4 per cent. The growth driver for 2017 is consumption, fuelled by the country’s recordhigh levels of employment. German Chancellor Angela Merkel rests her faith in free trade, and in bailing out ailing economies of the region. There is no such thing as protectionism. This is why Berlin is likely to see freehold competition and its produce will have markets worldwide. Its business and investment policies, coupled with the guidelines of the European Commission Bank regulations, are exportoriented and productive in essence. It is said that German companies and investments are supply-demand-friendly, and are well placed in safe horizons. Germany’s ambitions are inward looking, which makes it a peaceful role model on the world stage. Taking into

German Chancellor Angela Merkel account the advancements it has attained in human development, technology and industrialisation, it won’t be an exaggeration to say that today Germany is the ‘strong man’ of Europe. Its labour market is dependable and exports are impressive. Last but not least, its unemployment rate is the lowest in the 28-member European Union. Germany’s special consideration for developing countries, especially Africa, South Asia, the Middle East and the Caribbean, is in synergy with the determination to lead from the front. This is what makes Germany so special in Europe and beyond. — mehkri@khaleejtimes.com

Innovation in community digital banking For banks and financial institutions that want to have their own digital connectivity, Fidor has smart FinTech solutions Fidor paves the way for community-based digital banking in the Middle East with the opening of its Dubai branch and the availability of its successful digital banking backbone in the region. While the Middle East has historically been ahead when it comes to technology adoption, banks have been behind in providing mobile and digital banking. The company’s Dubai office was established as a response to the regional market demand from banks seeking to launch their own digital brand based on Fidor solutions. The new location will allow Fidor to tap into a pool of highly skilled talents, as the growing city increasingly attracts smart FinTech professionals. Recent market shifts have made it so that consumers are shaping expectations of banking experiences, rather than the other way around. With social media and e-commerce becoming prevalent globally, the Middle East is not immune. Many consumers expect to be able to use their smartphones

for any task, and they expect fast, easy and cost-effective banking solutions. Companies such as Fidor have stepped up to the plate to provide FinTech solutions that are innovative and entirely driven by its customers. “We have a goal to design digital banks together with consumers,” said Ge Drossaert, Member of the Board and Chief Commercial Officer at Fidor. “Can you name any bank that co-creates products with its customers in an open and public place? Our OS platform is highly agile and fully consumer-centric. We see the future of digital banking as including financial apps, which allow users to buy gold or borrow money from a peer. Also, bank members may be able to communicate with other customers before even opening an account. The most active community users and influencers may be financially rewarded for their contributions, something that traditional banks do not provide.” Fidor enables banks to tap into their digital

Ge Drossaert Member of the Board and Chief Commercial Officer at Fidor experience establishing and running a digital bank. Co-entrepreneurship is another new digital banking idea, which is provided for the first time by Fidor. Banks and other organisations will be able to accelerate their digital banking transformation by utilising the Fidor OS platform. In the Middle East, the concept of community-based banking will be realised first through a strategic partnership with Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank (ADIB). ADIB has recently signed a partnership and is joining forces with Fidor to launch the region’s first online community based bank. Through the partnership they will bring banking innovations to the region, especially to the UAE, which fit with the Middle East’s highly connected world. “We take pride in our co-entrepreneurship

approach, which we believe is the best partnership model to accelerate the digital banking transformation,” said Drossaert. “We see a benefit in skills transfer, while our partners bring the localisation of their offering as they understand their regional market best. We ensure that innovation is fully driven by both organisations and the members of the community themselves.” With the new technologies available through Fidor, the partnership is a precursor in community-based banking, which will boost the UAE’s position in the highly competitive FinTech world. Since the Dubai branch opened, Fidor has expanded both in terms of workforce and office space. Looking at additional partnerships with talents on the rise, the company plans to begin university partnerships. Recently, it was announced that a partnership with a renowned technology university in Singapore has been formed. Fidor is now anticipating the development of similar programmes among the UAE’s education system. “We are proud to be a pioneer in bringing community-based digital banking and other advanced ideas to consumers in the UAE,” said Drossaert. “We are also looking forward to initiating collaborative partnerships with local universities, which we feel will generate thought leadership and develop future talent in the digital space. Fidor is known as the oldest, but also one of the top 50 global FinTech companies. I am confident that we can drive home grown UAE innovation and make it available globally while ensuring the UAE’s position at the forefront of the global FinTech scene.”

GERMANY Losberger

Mobility is no more an issue Losberger’s makeshift options make life easy and accessible The Losberger Group is one on the world’s leading companies in the development, production, sale and rental of mobile buildings for various markets. The brand is dedicated to providing first-class products with an exceptional level of service, whether it’s an event tent, industrial hall or modular building solution. The group’s headquarters is located in Bad Rappenau Germany. Its worldwide activities are conducted via five production sites and 14 sales offices, with partners in over 100 countries. The group has subsidiaries in France, England, USA, Brazil and China, and employs over 800 employees worldwide. Founded in 1919, Losberger has been a pioneer in developing mobile structures for almost 100 years.

Certified German engineering Quality management systems, the latest technology and exceptional housekeeping ensure all Losberger components are manufactured with an extraordinary level of precision and quality. These are the reasons why Losberger can provide a warranty on all essential components of its mobile space solutions. Needless to say, the design, manufacturing and assembling are officially certified, giving customers peace of mind. Turnkey solutions Among other solutions, the programme

includes halls with aluminium or steel structures, warehouses, refugee shelters, modular buildings, tents, hangars, field hospitals, field camps and temporary airport buildings. Turnkey projects such as fullyequipped field hospitals, supply depots, university buildings, airport terminals and refugee camps have been successfully designed and executed worldwide. Sustainability at Losberger At Losberger, the product’s associated services and environmental impact are inextricably linked within the context of sustainability. This is reflected in certification to DIN ISO 9001:2008 and DIN ISO 14001:2004. Losberger only considers

environmental protection to be an essential management task, but also has set clear aims for internal and external processes. Losberger structures can be easily removed without leaving behind any remnants. The advantages of relocatable structures are obvious: cost-efficiency through comparatively low construction costs, short set-up and dismantling times, maximum flexibility of the building, as well as individual design. Moreover, the structures have no impacts on the ground, building materials can be recycled and components or even entire buildings can be reused, as once the event is over the structure is quickly dismantled. These are all factors making a positive contribution to the conservation of natural resources, providing location flexibility at the same time.

Global credit hub for business excellence DS-Concept Intelligent Trade Finance Limited assists small and medium enterprises with funds for all operational needs ■ Farhana Chowdhury Bringing German excellence to the region, DS-Concept Intelligent Trade Finance Limited opened its doors in Dubai to offer tailored cash flow solutions that enable small and medium enterprises to grow globally. “We are a global intelligent trade finance company. We work with companies around the world and assist them with their cash fund requirements,” said Ankit Goel, Managing Director of DS-Concept. Further elaborating on its expertise, Goel explained that the organisation offers trade finance options ranging from liquidity to accelerating cash flow, while keeping liabilities in check. To date, the DS-Concept group has a wide reach with 13 offices worldwide — including Europe, the US, China, Hong Kong, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Turkey – and its headquarters in Germany. DS-Concept serves as an international credit hub that monitors credit worthiness of

international customers. It assumes total credit risk on sales, grants and performs bookkeeping and collection. “To put things into perspective, we do not look at a business’ balance sheet, instead we look at the buyers’ and lend money against their balance sheet. Compared to banks who often request countless paperwork, including mortgages and financial statements, DS-Concept offers a simpler and faster way of receiving sufficient funds to help owners better focus on operations,” he said. DS-Concept is industry-agnostic and offers a wide range of services, however, Goel added that organisations involved in the apparel sector are among its top clients globally, followed by a strong forte in food, automobile and IT. Besides financing opportunities to free up cash flow in order to help businesses pick up pace in a competitive environment, DS-Concept provides protection from loss of receivables to its clients, with 100 per cent security guarantee against the insolvency of customers.

The company has two warehouses in Al Quoz that maintains a varied stock of safes, which can be dispatched immediately whenever required. GERMANY TROX

Ensuring a hygienic environment TROX masters the art of maintaining clean air and proper ventilation, notably in the healthcare sector

less sterile areas, where the requirements are not quite as demanding. Smart control components and systems from TROX keep the two flows of air separate and make sure that air flows in the required direction.

Healthcare is a delicate issue. Meeting hygienic and safety standards are of immense importance for health and environment. In this regard, there are a number of conditions to follow in order to ensure that it is free from contamination.

Safe hygiene practice in aseptic areas: The most critical requirements apply to airflow in operating theatres. To prevent infections caused by airborne pathogens and ensure that standards of occupational medicine are followed, airflow and air filtration play a particularly important role.

Room air-conditioning: Air-conditioning systems in hospitals must ensure that the contamination of air with microorganisms is kept to a minimum, and that the limits imposed do not exceeded, while dust, anaesthetic gases and odorous substances are kept at bay. This applies to most facilities inside a hospital, especially in operating theatres, intensive care units and maternity wards.

Operating theatres: In operating theatres, as well as in pre-op and post-op units, ventilation and air-conditioning systems are extremely important. Matthias Kasprowicz, Regional Managing Director, TROX Middle East ■ Prevent the spread of smoke by using a powered smoke exhaust system

■ Minimise the level of microorganisms in the air, particularly in protection zones (operating table, instrument trolley and labs) ■ Ensure strict room air-conditions (differential pressure, temperature and humidity) ■ Limit the concentration of various substances in their specified zones ■ Prevent the spread of fire by using fire dampers

An effective and efficient ventilation and air-conditioning system provide a hygienic and safe environment. Improved indoor air quality also helps patients recover quickly and staff to perform better. For hygiene reasons, only a one-directional airflow is allowed in specific rooms, i.e. from sterile areas with a minimum germ count to

Areas adjoined to operating theatres: The DIN 1946-4-12-2008 standard contains detailed definitions of the classes of rooms next to the operating theatres.

TROX ensures a healthy indoor environment at hospitals

In-patient wards: A sufficient supply of safe hygienic air is essential for rapid recovery. Innovative air terminal devices with adjustable air distribution elements respond fast and reduce air velocity. Visitors’ area: Hospitals are supposed to have clean and hygienic visitor areas and lobbies. They are important from a feedback perspective, as well as for the health of patients and visitors. Staff area: Common rooms, meeting rooms or offices are not required to have a mechanical ventilation system, but scientists have long known the inspiring effect of good indoor air. Studies show that performance levels may increase by up to six per cent, if proper air supply channels are available. In other words, investing into the refurbishment of existing ventilation and air-conditioning systems pays off. Scientists have calculated an economic benefit of up to $700 per year per employee. This sum can be saved due to better staff performance and fewer sick days.

Teka Küchentechnik began production in Germany in 1924 with the manufacturing of kitchen sinks, and gradually increased its range to include all kitchen appliances that are manufactured in 32 factories within Europe. Teka began its Middle East operations in 2002-03 with a base in Jebel Ali Free Zone and provides its products and services without any agent or intermediate through its regional offices for all the GCC countries. Teka has become a leader in the built-in kitchen sector for its quality and innovation of products and services. Furthermore, the company has developed its retail business to the extent that more than 300 kitchen specialists in the UAE are selling Teka appliances, sinks and taps in addition to their kitchen cabinets. “This has been possible because Teka considers kitchen specialists as its partners and gives them full support by quality of service that does not give a reason to complain, efficient Teka teamwork, high-quality products and regular training provided by Teka experts

to the studios staff,” informs Arturo Manso, Managing Director of Teka Küchentechnik UAE and Teka Middle East. “Our success is due to constant effort, alongside the support of our network of kitchen specialists, main construction companies, architects, interior designers, and in general all the kitchen industry, which makes us more proud to represent a German brand in the Middle East,” he added. “It is now time for consolidation

of gains made by Teka in the retail business. We do not expect the number of kitchen specialists to increase much because of the market size, but our aim is to further increase Teka business with them,” Manso said. He said that the replacement business was also increasing in the UAE, as kitchen appliances installed in buildings that were completed several years ago are now being replaced.
