The UAE attracts the world’s best business and medical schools
Establishing a high-quality and well-regulated private education sector has allowed the country to bring top global providers in the business to its shores n its quest to provide the best services across sectors for its residents, the UAE has made great strides in the field of education. The presence of international business schools and medical institutions that have set up base in the UAE is a recognition of this fact. The nation’s strategic location and pro-business policies have encouraged some of the world’s best brands and medical institutes to come and set up shop in the UAE. A growing population and the government’s willingness to invest heavily in education are the other critical factors helping bring international institutions as well as expat students to the nation. With talent in high demand but in short supply, the presence of these international institutions is a recognition of the growing awareness for the need to improve skills locally in order to achieve the ambitious national plans announced by the gov-

ernment to diversify and create knowledge economies. BIG ON B-SCHOOLS As early as 2014, a report in the Financial Times revealed six of the world’s top 100 business schools being based in the country including the London Business School and Insead. More recently, an MBA programme offered by SP Jain School of Global Management in Dubai was ranked in Forbes’ biennial top 20 list of the world’s best one-year international MBA programmes last year. The presence of globally recognised institutions also helps attract top executives and investors to the region and even retain them in the long term by providing opportunities that are world-class. The expected influx of professionals into the region will also drive demand for business education with employers being put under pressure to acquire and retain top talent and skills.
The UAE government’s focus on healthcare as a pivotal sector is great news for colleges and international institutions in the UAE offering medical degrees. With more than 700 projects in various stages of completion worth more $60 billion (about Dh220 billion), the nation is going all out to becoming a regional healthcare hub. What this translates to is the need for more doctors across all fields of medicine as well as professional medical staff in the coming years. In keeping with this demand, local and international medical colleges should expect a huge influx of prospective local medical students coming through their portals. The revenue base for the nation’s higher education market is worth more than $1 billion, according to a report published by Gulf News late last year. Considering the scope of business and medical schools in the UAE, a sizeable chunk of this revenue could possibly be generated by these two fields alone. n
