n this globalised age when people hardly have time for their personal lives, ‘home care services’ are taking a centre stage. it is essentially meant for people with special needs, and who are primarily at home. this may include old age pupils, disabled, and all those who are on medication, and in need of personal care round the clock. as they say necessity is the mother of inventions, so is the case with this upcoming professional approach known as home care. it caters to all kinds of helping aides such as taking care of bedridden people, administering them medicines on time, looking after psychotherapy, and last but not the least assisting them in their daily chores. these days there is more to be taken care of, such as helping the clinically ill in cooking, and similar household activities. the uae, too, has a number of professional bodies that look after the concept of home care, and provide invaluable services. a health aide is usually recruited for
this task, who performs the necessary services with utmost dedication and care. the point is that nurses that are well versed in medicine and other pathological sciences are an asset these days, and can be relied upon in adverse circumstances. there is, nonetheless, another positive aspect in this trade: certain organisations, and individuals, in the name of charity and community welfare, voluntarily perform some of the services. this humanitarian dimension has brought home care in the limelight, and there is immense competition in this field. this is why many of the insurance companies nowadays are coming up with packages that include special incentives to people who may need ‘home assistance’ after a chronic disease or in case of temporary or permanent disability. this concept is rapidly turning into a living science, as more and more professionals get associated with it. it inevitably helps in uplifting the standard of life of people with special needs, as well as making them contributory citizens as they cope with their new life
terms. it comes with renewed dignity, comfort and freedom of choice for the person concerned, and opens up new vistas of life and healthy activities. as far as the uae is concerned, there are stringent rules and regulations for home care services, which have brought confidence among the needy. a professional
approach acts as a core regulator, as such services get wider acceptability among the people. the blessing in disguise is that these days such services are affordable, as domestic help and nursing are taken care of in a unique way. it’s all about improving lives when life is in need of empathy. — mehkri@khaleejtimes.com
robodocs to the rescue The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has begun the implementation of its much-awaited RoboDoc project. The first patient to undergo treatment using this advanced technology was based at the Hatta Hospital. Doctors from Rashid Hospital’s respiratory department recently communicated with the team of doctors at Hatta Hospital to provide specialised consultation and respiratory management for a 40-year-old patient with respiratory complications. The DHA is the first government health organisation in the region to implement telehealth. RoboDocs have been placed at Hatta Hospital’s emergency department and the DHA’s 24-hour primary healthcare centres, Al Barsha and Nad Al Hammar, and they are linked to Rashid Hospital’s trauma centre. The authority will soon roll out this initiative across all DHA hospitals and health centres. The authority will also extend the Dubai RoboDoc initiative to home-care patients. A nurse will visit the home-care patients and dial in for teleconsultations if needed.
