A record 108 global and regional launches, including 15 concept cars by the world’s leading motoring manufacturers, are scheduled to take place during the five-day event. This highlights the influence of the Dubai International Motor Show and its position as the definitive platform for reaching Middle East markets. At the official Dubai International Motor Show 2013 press conference, Helal Saeed Almarri, CEO of Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) and Director General of Dubai Tourism & Commerce Marketing (DTCM) had said, “Under the astute guidance of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, we are benefitting from a prosperous economy and all-time high business and consumer confidence. Diesel and dust Sadiq Shaban brings you a low-down on the five best sporty cars in the market Range Rover Sport
Range Rover Sport takes the crown as one of the most sought after cars in town. The UK-based brand comes with a redesigned exterior complete with the grille, bumpers, side profile, sloping roofline, slimmer lamps and spoiler-like extensions. Easily one of the best allaround vehicles available in the market, Range Rover Sport is attractive, luxurious on the inside, sleek, fast and remarkably well engineered. Designed for those with an adventurous and fun side, the car is equally good on and off road with a permanent four wheel drive, a locking centre differential and the futuristic Terrain Response 2 system that offers jaw-dropping settings for different conditions: General, grass/gravel/ snow, sand, mud/ruts and rock crawl. Range Rover Sport has options for glass sunroof and motorised sunshades. Smaller and sportier than the standard Range Rover, Sport has an optional third row seat that can accommodate two children. Maserati GranTurismo Maserati GranTurismo, a two-door 2+2 coupé from the stables of Maserati, is a beast on the road. Known for its speed and style, the sporty GranTurismo prides itself with redesigned pistons, a revised combustion process and sabreshaped inlets on both sides just below the headlights. The car’s side skirts are sculpted and the rear bumper comes
with exhaust tips to accentuate the look. GranTurismo has a sport button that increases the engine note and sharpens the suspension to string out gear changes. With an ergonomic steering wheel, the Maserati offers redesigned seats for better lateral support and space for rear seat passengers. Sprinting to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds to reach a top speed of 315 km/h, there are a few equals of Maserati GranTurismo in the sports category cars. Ferrari F12 berlinetta Ferrari is synonymous with fast and the furious. Arguably one of the most admired sports cars in Dubai, the 2013 Ferrari F12 berlinetta is a front midengine, rear-wheel-drive grand tourer manufactured by the legendary Italian sports car manufacturer. The car’s engine system is fitted with Ferrari’s iconic HELE start-stop system to reduce fuel consumption when idling. To keep up with the brand’s luxe quotient F12 berlinetta has some of most sophisticated seats and a cabin that is lined in rich, aromatic and hand-fitted leather. The aggressively sculpted steering wheel is trademark Ferrari. A series of red LEDs at the top of the rim that light up sequentially make the supercar stand apart. F12 is sleeker than the rest of Ferrari cars – 2.0 inches shorter in length, 1.2 inches less in wheelbase and 0.7 inches down in width. The coupe’s centre of gravity too has been redesigned and is down by a full inch, making it all the more dynamic. A winner by any stretch of imagination. Alfa Romeo 4C With a 100-year-old history of making the finest automobiles, Alfa Romeo is still the preeminent name for aesthetic
cars with sophisticated engineering. The brand, now owned by the Fiat Group, is known to make expensive sports cars. Small in size, the lightweight rear-wheel drive, two-seater coupe sports car lives up to its promise, thanks to its lightweight and an engaging fourcylinder turbo engine. The car gives you an option to select the DNA (dynamic, normal or all-weather) driving mode that alters the operational parameters of the engine, transmission, stability control and electronic Q2 differential. Alfa Romeo 4C comes with 1,742 cc, six-speed twin-clutch automated transmission. The sports coupe has simple rotary knobs that handle the airflow, toggle switches that control the AC, fog lights, and power locks. It is a trendy car, which mixes quirkiness with élan. Infiniti Q60
Infiniti has all the trappings of a grand car that maintains a perfect harmony between the mechanical and stylistic requirements. The Infiniti division of Nissan manufactures the compact sports car. Q60 is an entire package that comes fitted with leather upholstery, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control and a seven-inch touchscreen display. Being fitted with an impressive cruise control, fog lights, auto on/off HID xenon headlights and 18inch aluminum alloy wheels is not why Q60 has won accolades. The coupe steals hearts by offering a comfortable luxury-ride and a choice of a sevenspeed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. The moonroof, memory functionality for the front seats, power lumbar support, power tilt and telescopic steering column are just some of its add-ons. — sadiq@khaleejtimes.com

Dubai International Motor Show also becomes the host for the first time of the Dubai Distinctive Number Plates Public Auction by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and supported by Lexus, taking place on November 7 at the Al Multaqua Ballroom in Dubai World Trade Centre. Mohammed Abdul Karim Namat, Director, Vehicle Licensing, RTA said, “The RTA is delighted to be part of the Dubai International Motor Show. We look forward to welcoming our potential buyers who will have the opportunity to buy their favorite numbers and enjoy the action at the show as well.” The motoring excitement generated by the Dubai International Motor Show this year extends to the streets of Dubai with the launch of the Dubai Grand Parade — a spectacular convoy of hundreds of super and luxury cars and bikes that will follow a route past the city’s most iconic landmarks. Taking place on November 8, and led by the Dubai Police fleet of famed supercars together with the Infiniti Red Bull Racing Formula 1 car, this inaugural event as part of the Dubai Motor Festival has been enthusiastically received by both motoring clubs and the public. An initiative of the Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), the Dubai Grand Parade is supported by the RTA and Dubai Police. Taking place from 3pm to 4pm, the RTA has advised that traffic on the designated route may be affected and are advising motorists to use alternative routes. Other show features in-
clude the Nissan experiential 4x4 track, a Hyundai World Cup Competition that focuses on football skills, and a Fastest Tyre Change contest sponsored by Pirelli and Wheels Magazine. “There is no doubt that this year’s show will be one of the most exciting on record, from the greatest deals to the newest wheels. With an affluent, aspirational and fast growing audience to impress in the Middle East, the motoring industry will be ensuring that they are at their best,” said Trixie LohMirmand, Senior Vice-President, DWTC. key growth region for the global automotive industry, the Middle East continues to drive sales across the board. In addition to the region’s high national wealth, significant government investment in infrastructure, buoyant private sector activity and a fast growing population are all contributing factors for consistent double-digit increases recorded by motoring marques in both volume and premium categories. As one of the leading car markets in the region, the UAE achieved record half-year sales this June, up 18.7 per cent from 2012, for a year-end forecast of 380,000 vehicles for 2013 — an increase of almost 23 per cent. This year sees several models making their first debut in Dubai with high profile exhibitors including BAIC Motors, Bentley, Brabus, Bugatti, Devolro, Kia, Land Rover,
Nissan, Okcu, Rolls-Royce, Spania GTA and W Motors.
