hen the National Association of Freight and Logistics (NAFL) was first set up in 1992, it was called National Committee of Freight Forwarders (NCFF) and became the fi rst and only national association from an Arabian Gulf country to join the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA). Formally inducted into FIATA at its Singapore meeting in 1992, NAFL has not only been a proactive member of FIATA, but also one of the better associations. Dubai is one of the few countries to host
the FIATA World Congress twice within such a short period. In 1999, FIATA World Congress was held from October 23 to 26 at the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry with the theme slogan, ‘Challenges in the new Millennium'. Again in 2007, it was held from October 18 to 22 at the Grand Hyatt Dubai, this time with the theme slogan, ‘Economic Mobilisation Through Transport Logistics’. NAFL continues its close relationship with FIATA and has led efforts to bring in members from the Middle East and African region into it. NAFL is also part of the initiative with FIATA called RAME (Region of Africa and Middle East) and has hosted several meetings of RAME in Dubai. »

MESSAGE FROM THE NAFL PATRON “I would like to convey my best wishes to the National Association of Freight and Logistics on its 20th anniversary and wish its Board and General Members success in future endeavours. “As you celebrate this milestone at the beginning of a new year, take a few minutes and review the achievements of your premier association. “In its 20 years of existence, the NAFL has helped push the freight and logistics industries in the United Arab Emirates to new heights. Indeed, it has done an excellent job at ensuring the UAE and Dubai’s position in the international freight and transportation communities. “As its Patron, I am delighted to witness the opening of a new chapter for the Association. With a new board at its helm, strong and determined members under its wings, and Dubai and the other Emirates at its back, I am sure it will once again post groundbreaking achievements in the freight and transport logistics industries in the coming years. “I wish the NAFL another 20 productive and successful years as it continues to march towards setting more benchmarks for best practices in the freights industries not only within the region but also in the world.” — Shaikh Ahmad bin Saeed Al Maktoum FEBRUARY 19, 2012

David Phillips, President of NAFL, promises to concentrate on the training needs of members “The National Association of Freight and Logistics (NAFL) will be reaching an important milestone when we complete 20 years of our existence this year. This is a milestone that needs recognition, both in terms of longevity and the people behind this milestone. “This year we are opening a new and vigorous chapter in the enduring history of the NAFL. And this is also our opportunity to look forward with optimism and enthusiasm and make our mark in the freight and logistics industry beyond the United Arab Emirates. “The new executive board brings fresh ideas and a new determination to execute agreed plans and initiatives. We will work hard to increase membership from all the emirates and promote effective co-operation between members and all stakeholders within the industry. “Feeding into quality, training remains a key objective of the NAFL, and going forward the faculty, programmes and training facilities will be hugely enhanced. The UAE is no longer a regional hub, it is now a recognised “global logistics hub” and NAFL will continue its endeavours in ensuring this position is maintained without compromising on security, speed and flexibility."

But before being part of FIATA, there had to be an Association. And that story started in Dubai much before 1992 when a group of freight forwarding professionals kept trying to set up the NCFF. “At last we succeeded in explaining to the authorities in Dubai that there are certain aspects of the freight forwarding and logistics business needing us to be part of international organisations and we had to be a collective body or association rather than individual freight forwarders for that,” explains Ashok Thomas, former secretary general of NAFL. In the beginning the Association conceptualised a board that would consist of freight forwarders, organisations in Dubai like the Civil Aviation, Chamber of Commerce, Ports and Customs, and leaders of industry such as Mohi-din Binhendi, Sultan Bin Sulayem and Shaikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Mohammed Al Abbar, Sultan Saeed Nasser Al Mansouri, and several other leading luminaries, who
were permanent seat holders in the Association. This board dedicated itself to make the Association serve as an international representative body, while making sure that it does not allow a few of the stronger ones to create a club to fight against the weaker ones. It was envisaged as a common platform for all the big and small freight-forwarding companies. The first meeting of the Association was held in the auditorium of the old Chamber of Commerce building in Dubai and was attended by several leading lights of the industry such as Captain Mansour, Ashok Thomas and Issa Baluch, who explained to the community the core intention — create standards and establish good practices that make the freight forwarding industry reliable and respected — and how it plans to do so. It was during that fi rst meeting that the Statutes of the Association were passed and it was formally registered. Clyde and Co, a legal fi rm had »

NAFL SECRETARY GENERAL’S MESSAGE
The Open Forum at the Dubai Chamber of Commerce seen left to right, Ashok Ahuja, Atiq Juma Nasib, Nadia Abdul Aziz, Ibrahim Abu Zayed and David Phillips
Nadia Abdul Aziz, Secretary General of NAFL, believes that every UAE national must ethically support every working individual in this country “I have been an Executive Board Member of the NAFL for two years and am now elected as Secretary General for the next two years. For this I am thankful to all the members for trusting me and electing me again this year. My promise to them, to the association and to my country is never to let them down. I will strive to deliver what is the best for our association members. “I believe that it is the duty of every UAE national to truly support anyone ethically working in this country. And as a UAE national, while supporting all workers, I have the support of the members, our rulers, and my family. And there is nothing stopping me from serving this association as well as I can. “The new and existing board members are active and sincerely want to bring an enhanced positive change to the NAFL and its members. Our previous members have built a good solid base and we are all ready to take it further ahead. We believe that there is no limit to what we can achieve. Frequent interactions with our members via our open forums and the support from the government and semi-government organisations will enable us to achieve more of the set goals for the association. “During this 20th anniversary celebration of NAFL, I would like to congratulate our government, NAFL Patron Shaikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates airline and Group, all our executive board members both existing and previous ones who served NAFL, NAFL Advisory Council, and our great members who have supported and believed in us over the years and who continue to do so.”

» helped free of charge to create the statutes. Sultan Saeed Nasser Al Mansouri, Minister of Economy of the UAE, who actively guided its growth, is among the many who have helped shape the NAFL. The fi rst Honorary Membership was offered to Abdul Rahman G. Al Mutaiwee — Director General, Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry; and Mohi-din A. Binhendi — Director-General, Department of Civil Aviation. Executive Support Membership was offered to Ram C. Menen, Ahmed Al Khowsi, F.A. Baig, and Julian Gray. In 1996, NCFF changed its name to NAFL to reflect the growing membership of logistics providers. The previous year it had set up the training institute to help member freight forwarding and logistics companies increase their productivity and aide their representatives to grow as professionals. And owing to the increasing relevance of airfreight and logistics, Shaikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation
NAFL secretariat
and Chairman of Emirates airline and Group, was officially named Patron of NAFL in 2002. In 2004, NAFL offices moved from the Cargo Village to purpose rented premises on Sheikh Zayed Road so that training facilities and membership could be augmented and accommodated. Currently NAFL has around 300 members from all the emirates and intends to increase in number. Being a member offers many advantages to industry professionals including getting the help of the relevant authorities to conduct business benefiting all concerned. The newly-elected board is aided by the Senior Advisory Council and Government Relations Committee. This committee comprises government official members from the Emirates, the President, and the past president of the Association. It is all set to forge ahead with increasing membership and activities concentrating on highlighting the position of the UAE as an efficient global hub.

“During my tenure as Vice-President of NAFL, I want to help make NAFL the premier institution for training the freight forwarding and logistics fraternity in the Middle East through updating our current training programme to internationally accepted norms whilst not losing focus on local requirements. We will work to get the concerned local authorities to accredit our courses so that we can improve the profile of our industry across the UAE. “Even though we call ourselves NAFL (National Association for Freight and Logistics), and have a few members from other emirates, we need to open separate chapters in the other emirates as well. We hope and will strive to open Abu Dhabi and Sharjah chapters during this tenure. “Considering that NAFL should be the voice of the industry, we have recently

We also realise that the more growth we have in this region, the more the freight and logistics industry will fl ourish,” adds Nadia Abdul Aziz, Secretary General of NAFL. NAFL is geared to support the growth of the logistics industry with its well-established training institute where qualified trainers train the members and associate members on the freight, customs, sea/air freight and logistics modules based on national and international freight association standards. Being a member of NAFL enables members to network with industry leaders and professionals on a local or international scale. NAFL has recently brought out a newsletter to cover industry news for its members and has set up accounts both in Facebook and Linkedin. The association has also updated and revamped its website www.nafl.ae with the latest news, courses, useful facts, etc. “I am sure with the dedication of the new board members and support from our earlier board members, government entities and our members, NAFL will be able to achieve everything that we have set out to do,” says Suman Chakrabarty,

Strengthening ties among existing members and increasing membership base are two of the most important plans of the new board of NAFL. “Accrediting operators from other Emirates is one of the main focus areas of this board. We will also focus on training, networking with authorities and resolving the concerns of our members,” explains Kevin
Ennis, Vice-President of NAFL. All the board members are unanimous in their commitment to make the freight and logistics industry a significant one not just in the UAE and the region but the entire world. “The Emirates is undoubtedly one if not the most important trade hub in the region. We want it recognised as an important freight and logistics hub in the world as well,” affirms Phillips.

“NAFL has seen the development of the freight forwarding industry in this country and experienced all its highs and lows during the last 20 years. And I am very excited to be the treasurer and a part of NAFL when we are celebrating its 20th anniversary. I have been in this industry for about four years now and it has benefitted me much. So now I have set out to give back to the association and the industry some of the benefits it has given me. “As treasurer I will ensure that NAFL has adequate finances to achieve all the goals that the board and members have earmarked for the next couple of years. I will ensure that the money collected from members is spent effectively. TESTIMONIALS Maltrans Emirates has been a member of the NAFL for more than 15 years and we are happy about our participation in its success. I want to congratulate fellow members, the board members and everyone who has been instrumental in the growth of the Association, during this 20th anniversary celebration. “Being in the NAFL, we have received the invaluable support of the industry as well as the local government authorities to conduct our business efficiently. The earlier executive board has achieved a lot and now it is the turn of the new board to work hard to continue and improve on their legacy. “I wish them and the NAFL more success in the future.” — Ahmad A. Razeq Managing Director, Maltrans Emirates
I am one of the founding members of the NAFL and immensely proud of what the Association has achieved in the last 20 years. It has helped the industry to develop into a mature and successful one. It has used the successful platform of Dubai to grow along with the city. The road map for its success has already been drawn up by the earlier generation of board members of the NAFL. Now the new generation has only to follow the main principles and guidelines without wavering and keep improving NAFL with their hard work. I wish them all the very best. — Farouq Al Zeer Managing Director, Schenker
The freight and logistics industry has matured very well after the NAFL came into existence and organised it. The earlier generation headed by stalwarts like Issa Baluch, Captain Mansour, Ashok Thomas and others have contributed immensely to making this industry successful in the past 20 years. I think the new generation of members and the newly-elected board should realise and appreciate the contribution of their seniors and take the Association forward to more success. “My sincere and best wishes to the NAFL! — Esmail Salim Managing Director, Total Freight International
Asia Express Shipping Agencies are among the first members of the NAFL. I think the NAFL is a fabulous Association seeing what it has done for the industry in the last 20 years. Its achievements with regard to FIATA have been spectacular especially with Dubai hosting two FIATA World Congress and making the city and the region so well-known around the world. Now that NAFL has achieved another milestone and has a newly elected board at its helm, it should focus more on uplifting the local shipping industry. More has to be done to improve the business of the local industry so that we are on par with international players. — Ravinder Bhasin, Managing Director, Asia Express Shipping Agencies

Memo pad for Association FIATA appreciates NAFL's efforts and active partnership
“First of all, on behalf of FIATA, we would like to congratulate your association on its 20th anniversary which falls this year. Founded as UAE Freight Forwarders Association in 1991, the National Committee of Freight Forwarders, now NAFL as of September 2, 2002, is The National Association of Freight and Logistics in the UAE. FIATA is proud that such an active and reputable representative in the UAE has been counted among its members for over 20 years. “NAFL is a very active Association in RAME (Region Africa Middle East regional body of FIATA), which plays an important role in the development of the freight and logistics industry, especially
in the Middle East. With the excellent logistics and transport system that exists in Dubai and the UAE, NAFL has a crucial role as a centre of excellence in the dissemination of information, a firm base in the promotion of good practice both locally and in regards of other countries in the region. “In line with this, we appreciate NAFL’s continuous efforts and active partnership in the different FIATA institutes and bodies as well as in the vocational training activities. “This shows the interest of NAFL in playing an active part within the FIATA organisation, which hopefully would ensure continuity in the future, to share vital industry information on Middle East and North African region and to provide these members with a facilitation platform as it has been doing in the past, de facto becoming a reference for many of us. “All members are delighted to see NAFL’s enthusiastic efforts in being an active member of FIATA. For this reason, we are happy to keep all avenues in FIATA open
Peter Maegerle, Manager at FIATA for the Region Africa Middle East (RAME)
to NAFL, where members can still benefit or enhanced support, such as the FIATA Training Programmes and the FIATA Foundation. Many RAME members have already shown a big interest in the training courses offered by NAFL (Train the Trainer — TOT) and validated their programme in connection with this. “NAFL can as well benefit from the extensive contacts of FIATA via the World Freight Community — this ensures, that NAFL is well-connected via the networking activities and other international conferences where FIATA is more than adequately represented and securely placed at the centre of the international transport and logistics sector.”
