introduction Facing the consequences of brutal war for 19 years of my life, I had the strong motivation to bring peace to the mankind through developing the right kind of leadership. 6 years ago I was fortunate enough to witness the impact created by AIESEC through my own eyes by becoming an exchange intern in Ningbo, Mainland of China. AIESEC enabled my vision to be a reality by enabling me to create exchange projects and supporting the war affected zone in Sri Lanka, and currently in Vietnam we engage in many projects to develop the youth who has become victims of the Vietnam War and also in many other avenues to enhance the global competency of Vietnamese youth. But we have not been able to capture these stories well enough so that we can showcase our impact to a wider audience. Through this booklet we expect to achieve that while providing an opportunity for our beloved stakeholders to see the impact of AIESEC as well as join hands with us enabling us to create bigger and better impact in the future. Based on the millennium development goals AIESEC has developed sub issues to enable the social development in a better manner. AIESEC in Vietnam engages in projects related to Education, Culture, Social Entrepreneurship, Health and Environment based on these issues. Throughout the operations over the last 6 years we were able to create impact in these avenues, which you will be able to witness by going through this booklet. This booklet is the first of its kind which will be followed up by a series of Impact booklets every 6 months, and all stories will be continuously updated on the AIESEC in Vietnam blog space for your reference. I hope you will enjoy and get inspired by the stories that AIESEC in Vietnam has been creating during the past and wish you can be one of our valuable partners to multiply the impact we create on the society. Warmest Regards, Savinda Ranathunga Vice President - Social Projects AIESEC in Vietnam

GLOBAL PASSPORT Vietnam is on the move but Vietnamese youngsters are still very shy and scared of speaking English with foreigners. This leads to a huge disavantage in their carreer future. “Global Passport” was commenced in November of 2012, as a part of AIESEC Vietnam with the ambition to boost English communication Vietnamese youngsters, especially students. This project also provides Vietnamese youth with diverse culture understanding and exposures to the whole world, broadens their mind, raises their global mindset. It gives interns coming to Vietnam experience of being a teacher changing people’s lives, project management, event organization and exploring Vietnam, especially Ho Chi Minh City ( or also Saigon) – a city once known as “Pearl of the Far East”.
9
HA I have been working for the project for 3 seasons. To be honest, I didn’t choose this project at first. I just started to love “Global Passport” project after 1 month and totally crushed after 3 months later. Why? Because I got to understand what we were doing and indeed I knew that the 4 values of project not just based on theory. The most important thing to motivate me to apply for OCP is people. I love the way our teammates strive for the best. We work because we love to do. Learning by doing is our motto whenever whatever comes. We do improve ourselves time by time. We do deliver our values to the others more and more qualified.
9
How we dress up in Germany? How we have a date in Brazil? You can see how the people in other countries living through local people’ eyes.
OCP is the one who has to delegate tasks suitably and what is the project heading to. I think it’s kind of hard to deal with people. Handling multiple stakeholders is not easy at all. Sometimes I find no directions for me, then I try to look back on the objectives of each stakeholder and their expectations at the beginning. I am now getting better decision making. That’s the thing I would be proud mostly.
- Self-confidence: The interns and students are in the same age. This is a good chance for us to understand and share with each other our problems. We also talk about some common topics that we all care about so it’s easier for you to catch up and to be a part of the conservation.
Thanks to the project I have met so many people from different parts of the world. It’s such amazing when you work with people who don’t speak your language. It’s totally different while working together. You have more fun, more tough and of course that’s worth. I am happy to look at the participants still keep in touch with the interns even after project. See a shy boy tries to express his feelings. How wonderful it is! They not only come to class for improving English right? Gradually I’m getting more interested in watching how people develop. That’s the reason I am still here and doing GP’s stuffs.
The farewell party of Season 6. I was a chair at that time, the most stupid chair ever. I forgot the script and did so many things which were really silly. That was my first time to be an MC and I was so scared of that. Luckily the event was going good even the professional image was totally broken. We did make the atmosphere friendly and cozy. I could see people were happy then. They laughed and cried. That’s enough. I cannot say they will develop in just few weeks. The things here is we try to take impacts on their mindset much more than their capacity. We want them to understand more about themselves and what they are doing. I believe we may not see the big changes in short time but this is the background that could help them in the future. GP is not just only the place for improving English. English is the tools to help them go further. I hope GP could help the participants have good basic then they can take more opportunities from AIESEC (conferences/ events/ recruitments/ exchange programs/etc.) and other areas as well.
What makes the project different? Based on 4 values: - English Environment: We speak English all the time. Besides, the students still have time to talk to interns by hanging out or introducing them famous places in Vietnam as tourguides. This is a chance for them to practice more. - Network: We help them build network not just only in 4 weeks. We keep in touch after that. Imagine one day come to India, Australia or even Africa, you still have support from your friends.
I have so many feelings that I may not say at all. If I had a chance to choose, I’d still be an GP-er.
- Multicultural understandings: Yes you can search for cultural knowledge on the internet but here we discuss more about culture in daily life.

Tran Quang Phuc What is your feeling for this project? At this time, we still have a lot of things unfinished, but I feel like better things worth fighting for. What are the challenges you face in this project? When my first week in AIESEC passed, I just feel like a month have passed already. There are three challenges that labeled my probation time unforgettable. First is the unbelievable spent time. Although I have expected how heavy the workload would be, things have gone wild in my first week. Newbies of Global Passport have no time to waste even on those early days. Second is the double in expenditure, trying to manage my budget, getting advise from senior, burning my saving are what happening with the newbie, and I think this challenge help me grow up as an independence person. Finally, it is my capacity that challenged me a lot. The very first week, I felt as if I am the weakest person in the team. Lack of critical thinking gives me a lot of difficulty while making content with intern as well.
Here is my thought about Global Passport Project. Why do you choose this project?
At first, I was also doubtful about why I am here, after the recruitment. I know that I will do things relevant to my major at university (English Teaching) and in the most creative way as possible; however, that sense of purpose was not very strong. Then, it is my teammates who makes Global Passport become my second home. To be honest, working with those people strengthen my sense of purpose. From this project, I have been gaining many things and giving many things as well.
11
What are the impacts you think you have made through this project? There are small impacts that I am making along with my team. First is the confidence of students which was build up by practicing everyday. Second is the realization of the interns of what they do well and what they can improve. Third is my self-development on the way I am working. The truth is that they all matter. What kind of changes should happened in Vietnam? The thing should be changed, I think, is the way people educated. The youth need more chances to find themselves and to be themselves. By being challenged and seeing the outside world, I believe that is one of the Vietnam can develop human. What is your project Vision/mission? I myself call it “GP Dream” which is aiming to remove the language barrier between Vietnamese students and people from other countries.
By creating the multi cultures environment, we believe that seeing how big the world is can give the students motivation to go out there and explore even when the course is over. What is the past activities, current activities and future planning for your projects? At this moment, season 8 with multi culture theme is on its way. Class activities are planning ahead. For the future, although the schedule of us is almost dense, we still want to involve in more social activities. Therefore, we trying to pave the time for a fieldtrip each season. Why do your project matter to the society? In my opinion, the reason why people study (not only at school) is that they want to have more knowledge and when people have knowledge… what does it mean if they don’t use it to help other people? That is why we are try so hard helping, equipping, activating our students so that they can help other people or at least, spread the spirit. Which memories that you remember the most? For me they are the people. We did have a standard process for Global Passport, but the one who make it different are the people: interns, OCs and students as well. If you are an OC Content… You will have chances to hear many exclusive stories from interns before choosing which one will be presented in class. You will see how dynamic and flexible the intern are when unexpected difficult things happen. You will be given a mission to connect student needs with intern capacity. And you’re gonna miss them when they’re gone. How do you develop by doing this project? Which skills you have learned? Things never be the same as before since I am in Global Passport. I grow up through challenges. Critical thinking, Time management and even Communication skill are the three that I pay much attention on. So far, I feel that I am making progress, less repeating the same mistakes.

ELFA memory I also remember is the first day I went with my beloved buddy “Fairy”. We have never gone to that coffee shop before. We just bought two cups of coffee but it’s very small. OMG. We had to charge about 60 000 VND or more. I’m happy when seeing my students improve a lot. I remember when I interview Cuc Phuong – one of my students – at the first time, she was shy. However, after few weeks, she even talked a lot in English. In addition, Andy – another student in the class – was not confident when he spoke English but now he speak with a louder voice and his confidence. That is amazing! As for me, I have developed myself very
I am Elfa from Central Java, Indonesia. I chose my destination to do “Global Passport” Project because Ho Chi Minh City is a famous city. I had a big chance to go to this place via AIESEC and this is a big challenge for me. One more reason I chose this project is that I love teaching . My major I am studying is English Education at Pascasarjana Universitas Sebelas Maret. The memory I remember the most is the Culture Day. It is an amazing part of this project. This is also my first time I did fundraising activity. Vietnamese people are very nice. We sold candies to make money and they just bought and bought. Another 13
much through this project. I did all of the things and solved the problem by myself. Now I am independent from my parents. I also had more confidence thanks to talking in front of the class many times. I learned how to control nervousness when I have public speaking. I learned how to prepare and manage things before having to speak. I will not be shaking when I have to speak in front of many people anymore. I like fried noodle which is called “mi xao” in Vietnamese. It is very delicious. It is near a university. It is cheap, just about 22 000 VND and I got beef, noodle…etc. The first time I went there with Do. In the second week, I ought to go there by
myself and I love “banh mi”. It is the cheapest thing there. I am very sad because my roomates Chantelle and Haoweii left first. Time flies. We leave in the hostel together. Haoweii and Chantelle are very kind and they helped me a lot. Chantelle is the best roomates ever. She is kind-hearted girl. When I was sick in Vietnam, she always got me some medicine, she gave me a lot of advice. Haoweii always reminds me not to waste the food because there are so many poor kids outside.

S.E.P S.E.P. (Support - Educate - Prepare) is a social project in Global Community Development Program of AIESEC, aims to help youth understand themselves in Gender field, protect themselves and others, as well as raise social awareness about sexual issues, especially LGBT. We provide university and high school students with workshops and fieldtrips to shelters and HIV villages to educate students about sex knowledge as well as get their awareness about the Vietnam’s contemporary situation. In 2014 we succeeded with 16 seminars and workshops, 20 fieldtrips, had 2000 students engaged, 16 exchange participant, just to name a few. S.E.P does not aim only to educate but also to provide a fun session for students and opportunity to interact with foreigners, as well as each other in an English speaking session.

When I was chosen for the Global Citizen Project, I did not choose the country; I just put Vietnam as one of my preferences. One of the many reasons I chose Vietnam is that I’m from Philippines and I believe that countries from Asia have alike cultures but also many differences at the same time. Seeing and understanding these differences will help countries understand each other better and develop a long lasting bond. Now, I am glad that the program let me come to Vietnam; even though Philippines’ culture is much like Vietnam’s, I am exposed to a new world with many differences and new experiences that I would never be able to have if I were in Philippines. What I enjoy most is working with Vietnamese people because they are very kind, understanding and patient. In my first week in Vietnam, I got lost while trying to take a bus to a definite destination. When I tried to ask for instructions on where to go, I came across many people who could not speak English. I was losing hope and Google Map was not much of a help when few people saw me and helped me. They were not very good at English but that did not prevent them from doing their best to help me. I remember one of them taking out a piece of paper to draw out the route and which bus I should take and where I should get off. In other country, it will be very unlikely that someone will notice that I am lost or to spend that much time and effort to help me.
ERIN 17
When I came to Vietnam, I was working in Global Passport project with AIESEC FTU and later was transferred to work in S.E.P. At the beginning of the project, I was very half-hearted and did not want to commit. However, after a while working with friends and Vietnamese students, I found the program very fulfilling. I also put a lot of effort in this project for I believe that through small impacts on students, like SEP is making, we educate the whole society. When we share the knowledge to people, through networking the information and knowledge will spread to others. Working in this project required a lot of effort for we had to understand the matter very clearly to not only answer the questions but also be able to resolve one’s misconceptions. The program has also taught me to be flexible in work. Because we work mostly in workshops and with students, it’s very important to see whether the planned program is suitable for the audience that we are working with. If not, the change is required. This is very hard to predict because each time we work with different audiences and it’s never similar. Hence, as much as it makes the work more challenging and interesting, it also causes us many problems and difficulties.

I have two friends who visited and worked in Vietnam, which, in their opinion was a beautiful country with hospitable people. Seeing how much my friends fell in love with this country I always wanted to come and see the reason why a person from Netherlands – a country so far away and so different from Vietnam, can love this place so much. S.E.P brought me here and gave me most memorable experience in my whole life. I chose this project because I am a medical student and I thought that I would have a lot of fun and make a lot of new friends if I participated. I did make many friends since I came to Vietnam and thanks to this project I am friends with many people around the world. Since I major in medicine, I know a lot about the gender and LGBTs, so I hoped that I could use my knowledge to do something useful for the Vietnamese youth. We organized workshops for university and high school students to talk about the gender, same sex marriage and LGBT. I’m very glad to see that most Vietnamese youth have a good understanding about the gender and positive vision about LGBT. However, what I love the most is seeing that despite their knowledge they are still eager to learn more. Viet Nam is the furthest country I have ever been to and I love this country very
much. On my first few days being here I couldn’t think much about anything else but the heat and traffic in Ho Chi Minh City. However, after a while, I stopped experiencing the discomfort caused by the weather and learnt how to cross the very crowded streets. Even I was surprised to see myself being able to do that! This is also the very first time I made a non-Dutch friend. They showed me a new perspective about everything and it’s the diversity in opinions and views that I enjoy the most when we talk to each other. I also love Vietnamese people for their friendliness and hospitality. Many Vietnamese speak English very well, so they make me very comfortable for there is almost no language barrier. After a few weeks of being here, Vietnam is a second home in my heart. S.E.P is all about amazing experience. I love working with AIESECers and interns from different countries, they always try their best to finish the work and help the others as well. The best thing of this project is that we can provide the correct information about LGBT community and make people change their minds about it. So I just want to say Thanks AIESEC and S.E.P because of this chance to be an intern of this project and joyful time in Viet Nam.

Actually, I did not choose this project. However, when I engaged in S.E.P. Project's activities, somehow I can understand its value and I felt happy with what I could do. This project mainly focuses on sex education for the youth, then changes their mindset about gender and sex discrimination, health and lifestyles, etc., so I hope all these things will be changed in the near future in Vietnam in a positive way. Our vision is to make students understand themselves in gender field, then know how to protect themselves and the others through self-awareness and global mindset. In the past, now and in the future, we will maintain all these activities: Workshop (high school and university students), Camp, HIV Fieldtrip, Global Village. Teamworking is the hardest challenge for me because everyone has their own thinking about this project, I can not change their working style so I chose to be stick with my working style and tried to get to know more about other OCs. However, I think I made attendees believe in what we are doing and made the fanpage friendlier to our target customers who are students. Almost young people especially those are in puberty, they feel ashamed of asking anybody about sex knowledge, that's the reason why they can get a wrong conception about sex education and related issues such as safe sex, LGBT, which makes this project be helpful. I remember the time when I had a small survey for nearly 150 students from many countries including Vietnam, some told me that they are gay, lesbian or transgender, then I felt really happy when they could open their heart and showed it to me. This is one of the most meaningful projects that I have joined in, I feel proud to be a part of it. What i learnt from this project is not a skill but a big heart and a thoughtful mind about everything.

After finishing “Global Citizen” Program, I did not know what I will do next. My EPs advise me to choose a project which is hard to run to challenge myself. That time “Vietnam 3D” Project is not good. Intern who joined that [] program. This project has many things that people have to deal with so I think that I would apply for it. Besides that, I just love culture but not education or anything else. In addition, my backround is marketing while this project need marketing. Therefore, I think I could do something in that project.
25
Among those things an OCP has to do such as recruiting OC members, doing master plan…etc, I have to reorganize the project, change the project’s content because it had many weak points. This season we have to make differences about sale, marketing, customers, skateholders...etc. We sold the products to variety of companies about smart-phone, camera, travel but we could not sell anything. About marketing, we open the application form to seek students who really have passion and potential in showcasing Vietnamese culture, have right mindset with the project. The contestants have to go through 3 rounds. The most important partner Trip.me helps the contestants to plan and interact with interns to know what the interns really want. In the last round, the contestants have to present the tour for interns and interns have a chance to choose which tour they feel interested. Nguyen Dinh Toan – Head of Marketing, Masan Beverage gave us feedback on marketing so marketing of the project excess 20% of our goal. I interviewed about 30 interns but most of them think that Vietnam still has wars. I think this project not only break the sterotypes of people and showcase Vietnamese people from other countries about Vietnam but also helped Vietnamese youth to understand and love our country more. When we recruited the interns, they have to write an essay about their perceptions towards Vietnam. We had to make sure the interns we chose have a real commitment and motivation when they would come to Vietnam. That’s why the interns of this season are nice and cute. They even helped us. We travelled together. They are showcasing Vietnam in 5 channels at the present. I am happy that when we open the application form of Amazing Race Saigon, there are so many people registering. We had to close the link 4 days before the deadline. Everything goes smoothly. This project helps our OC members to understand more about Vietnam and realized that Vietnam is so beautiful. I realized that Vietnamese youth have to practice more skills such as English communication, leadership…etc. This project makes me fulfilled the most among projects I used to organize.
26
Ethan I have already had 3 projects in Vietnam but most of them is about food and Vietnamese cuisine. When I read about “Vietnam 3D” project which is a project allows interns to come to Vietnam and discover this beautiful country, my friend and I decided immediately to participate in and now we know that we were right.
In my opinion, Vietnam is one of the most interesting country and I am so proud to be here. I used to think that Vietnam and Malaysia have the same culture because both are in South East Asia but I surprised to realize that I was wrong. As I see till now, Vietnam’s culture is totally different from Malaysia’s. There are so many things to say about Vietnam. But the most impressed thing is Vietnam’s beautiful landscapes like high mountains, beaches and so on. I also love learning about history of this country, exploring the unique and deep culture. I will absolutely come back here if I have one more chance.
“Vietnam 3D” project gave me the chance to travel to many regions in Vietnam. I think I will miss Ho Chi Minh City a lot when I come back to Malaysia. I could see a bustle, splendid and busy city with so many people but all of them are friendly and lovable, especial our OCP and OC team members. I have been to Cu Chi Tunnel - an immense network of connecting underground tunnels and a part of a much larger network of tunnels that underlie much of the country. I also came to Cam Ranh, Ninh Thuan for the Champa tour, Buon Me Thuot for the coffee tour and MeKong Delta. I love coffee so much and Malaysia has good kind of coffee like Vietnam so I am glad to be on the coffee tour. I, other interns and OC team stayed and worked together almost the time of this project. That’s why I had so many memories with them. Everyday I always had challenges to overcome such as heavy schedule, language barrier and so on. However, I know that every single challenge make me grow up and understand clearly about Vietnamese culture and I tried my best to overcome and enjoy it.
27
I just want to say that “Vietnam 3D” is a good project. This trip helped me not only to learn so many new things but also make friend with so many kind and talented people around the world and Vietnam as well. Now I feel so confident to say I saw true beauty of Vietnam and thanks for AIESEC FTU HCMC to bring us together and give me this valuable experience.

“Vietnam 3D” Project is the most interesting project by AIESEC that I have ever known and also my first project in Viet Nam. I always want to travel to Asian countries, especially the developing ones so I did not have to think so much to decide to be one of the interns of Vietnam 3D. Till now, I believe that I have a perfect decision.
I am a Chinese but I was born and grew up in Australia. I want to come to Vietnam because as far as I know Vietnam and China have the alike culture but also different from Australia’s culture at the same time. But after exploring Vietnam, I realized that this country has its own fascinated points. There are so many cheap things in here, people are so nice and friendly, ‘banh xeo’ and ‘banh mi’ in Ho Chi Minh city are also quite delicious and I really want to eat them again if I have chance to come back to Ho Chi Minh City.
With the OCP and the OC team from AIESEC FTU HCMC, we make an adorable team. We spent our first few days in Ho Chi Minh City to get used to the weather and also to prepare for our tours. Having been to Ninh Thuan and learned about Champa culture which is a collection of independent Cham polities since the 7th century through 1832 is great. We all were impressed by antiquities and heritages that are showed in here. After that, we had the coffee tour to Dak Lak Province, known as the coffee capital of Vietnam. We also have been to Cam Ranh, MeKong Delta and the tunnels of Cu Chi. I had not only joyful time during this project but also difficulties like language barrier and stranger foods. However, we tried our best and found our own motivations to kept going on to every final destination. What I love the most of this project is other interns around the world and me could live and share this memorable experience together. I just feel like we are perennial friends and I am so proud to be an intern of “Vietnam 3D”.
Therefore, “Vietnam 3D” is the most unexpected experience in my whole life. I am so proud to be an AIESECer and Vietnam 3D’s intern. During this project, I met a lot of talented friends from Vietnam, Brazil, India, Malaysia, New Zealand..., lived with local Vietnamese family, explored many regions in Vietnam and seen different sides of this beautiful country. “Vietnam 3D” and its tours also teach me that not everything, every culture like the same so I just want to learn more and more.

“I think for most of us, the reason to choose the project is to improve ourselves in such a struggling, yet interesting project in our LC. Personally for me & my project leader, Suong, we chose this project because we love Saigon, we love Vietnam the way it truly is and we want to show its beauty and preserve it. It is also the vision of the project.
We also face troubles with partners when they keep delaying signing contracts or delivering sponsorship as promised. That also means that the project could be delayed for a few weeks, or a month.
I can say that this is the toughest project for all of us but we did have an amazing term. Even though it is so tiring because we have to deal with a lot of partners, stakeholders, we still have each other’s back and that’s what make this project worth working in. Our idea is to make this project as glorious as possible but we have to face a lot of challenges: financial status, partners, stakeholders, interns...etc
For Vietnamese students, we help them have a chance to actually look deeper in their hometown to look for exotic, hidden beauty that not many people know. Also, this project helps them learn how to organize a tour in a very detail. But the greatest impact we have created is that they know Vietnam and its beauty is worth saving, preserving and maintaining for next generations.
Taking over this project with a few legacy, we struggle a lot to raise sponsorship, but so far we can only get in-kinds. We need to decrease the prizes for the contestants and subsidized money for the OCs to go with the interns and contestants to the provinces.
31
However, we have created impacts on Vietnamese students and our wonderful interns.
For interns, we help them open their eyes, open their mind to such a country in which their perception is about war. More than that, we help them and show them our beauty, which is hidden and very local. Also, they must demonstrate a “preserving” spirit because they know that Vietnam is a great place to live.”

iGCDP 2020 Peace and Fulfilment of Humankind's Potential is what AIESEC as an organisation been striving for the last 66 years of its existence. Through our value driven culture and exchange platform to create Responsible and Entrepreneurial leadership, we have developed many change agents to assist in the development of the society. To get one step closer to our bold vision we create the Big, Hairy, Audacious, Goal (BHAG) which is to "Engage and develop every young person in the World. As AIESEC Vietnam we undertook the mammoth task of engaging and developing every young person in Vietnam and social projects is one of the avenues we have the highest reach in achieving this goal. Based on which we created the vision for Social Projects (Incoming Global Community Development Program iGCDP) till the year of 2020. We want to engage 30% of the Vietnamese Youth population between the ages of 15 to 24 through our social project platforms. We plan to achieve 40% growth in operations as well as reach per intern over the next 5 years which will enable us to reach 2.7 million Vietnamese Youth out of total youth population of 9 million in 2020. 36
GROWTH IN PILLARS

health Sex Education Project
Vietnam has the world’s highest abortion rate which is 83.3 per 1000 women and over 1.5 million abortions per year. This is mainly caused due to the lack of education and awareness amongst the youth. AIESEC will be upgrading the current Sex Education Project, so that we can reach more organisations for support so that we can reach a wider community. This will enable our interns to contribute massively to a national issue faced by the youth of Vietnam.
Environmental Projects In the future AIESEC in Vietnam is planning to engage interns in organisations, NGOs and NPOs who are working on the environmental field. Some of the fields will be, waste management, environmental education for youth, earth hour project, resource optimisation for environmental sustainability, energy and water conservation, etc. Environmental Projects AIESEC interns will be engaged in existing projects based on the thematic areas stated above and will organise various activities with the partners to enhance the impact that is created at present. And we wish to obtain the support from organisations who invest on in this avenue to create a rippling impact.
