Before the Altar

Relationships are investments By Mr. Kofi Wusu

A

ny relationship that leads to marriage is serious business . It determines whether a couple will live in peace in harmony or will be at each other's throat. Abraham, the father of faith, gives us a pivotal marriage guide in the way he conducted his son's marriage. He treated Isaac's marriage as a life-long investment and blazed the trail for us to emulate.

Genesis 24:3-4:

I want you to swear by the LORD..that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I am living but will go to my country..and get a wife for my son Isaac

No one just chances upon a good relationship. It must be found

1. Investment is not a game of chance. Investment pundits advocate careful planning and preparation before one invests. Searching is involved which leads to a well informed choice. It is therefore no wonder the Bible says in Proverbs 18:22 that “He who finds a wife finds what is good”. No one just chances upon a good relationship. It must be found. I have friends who were in a healthy relationship but jumped out because they did not look at what they had hard enough. Seeing is never the same as looking.

2. Investments are not quick-fixes. Abraham advised his chief servant not to focus on the daughters of the Canaanites although they were readily available. Instead he was to look out for a woman who was an embodiment of their beliefs, value system and they view relationships as quick fixes. In the same way every investor needs to know who handles their money (background checks). Everyone also deserves to know the one who will handle their lives. 3. We attract investment that fits us. In Genesis 24:12-19 the servant prayed “…may it be when I say to a girl please let down your jar that I may have a drink and she says, 'Drink and I will water your camels too'-let her be the one”.

22

Before he had finished praying Rebecca came out and did all the hard work an average person would NOT volunteer to do. Abraham's hardworking servant attracted the hardworking Rebekah. Some people are ignorant regarding investments so they invest anyhow and usually lose. A few take their time to research, invest and monitor their investments and they get the best.

4. We attract investments that fit us just as we attract relationship that fits us. The phenomenon sounds harsh but it is worth looking at closely. Isaac, the preferred son over Ishmael, marries Rebekah who matched shim boot for boot in preferential treatment of their children, Essau and Jacob. Ruth who loses everything in life except her sense of devotion catches the eyes of Boaz, a man of true devotion. Sometimes we wonder why an innocent lady marries an abusive husband! Life is more than we see. Some women in abusive relationships who have decided to be open and frank about their circumstances have revealed how they saw the genuine Christian to be predictable, slow or boring, so they opted for the 'smooth-talker' who could give them a lot of adrenalin thrill. It is very uncomfortable to have a hard look at oneself, but when that is done one can easily predict where one will land in marriage. I am not referring to the 'you' that people see. I am referring to the 'real you' that you alone knows very well.

The Groom

Groom

Duties S

o, you are going to get married, that much you know. In fact that is all you know. There is however a lot more to being a groom than simply making sure you turn up on the day and say ‘I do’. Typically couples will share the duties around planning and organising the wedding; sharing/dividing responsibilities here and there but ultimately coming together in a combined effort. Tradition however dictates that there are some things you must do by yourself, without the guiding hand of your wife-to-be.

It is important that you liaise with your fiancée about the colours of your accessories (tie, boutonniere etc.) as you do not want to clash with the chosen colour scheme, but ultimately the sartorial direction you go in should be decided by you.

This is the Groom List guide to the jobs you have to do… alone.

Give a speech

Choose the Best Man Choosing your best man - and ushers for that matter – is something that only you can (and should) do. Don’t be bullied into choosing who your fiancée wants or who your parents think will be the best choice ‘politically’. You should already have a rough idea of who you think is reliable and responsible enough to do the job, and if you can’t decide between two people, have more than one best man. The ushers are equivalent to the bridesmaids and so should be your choice as well. You may want to be a bit more openminded however as this could be the ideal way of including some of the male members of your fiancées family. Does she have any brothers or close cousins? Would they appreciate being asked? Your best man and the ushers put in a lot of work both on the day and in the build-up to the wedding. It is customary to say thank you by getting them all a little gift and handing them out during your speech. Choosing and buying these gifts are your responsibility also.

Choose what to wear Any guide that tells you it is conventional to wear a morning suit (or morning dress to be more precise) to your wedding is lying. When morning dress became popular in the early part of the 20th century it was conventional to wear it to any and every social event that occurred before 5pm. No doubt this covered a lot of weddings, but to declare morning dress as all-encompassing groom’s uniform is unacceptable. The Groom List delights in telling you that what you as the groom choose to wear to your wedding is entirely up to you.

You will of course want to look the best you have ever looked so you should go for a style, cut and colour of suit that highlights your best bits and covers up the worst.

Tradition dictates that the best man, the father of the bride and you, the groom, should each give a speech following the wedding breakfast. This is an integral part of the wedding event and all your guests (and no doubt your new wife) will be expecting you to stand up and say a few words. There are plenty of tips on how to write and deliver a great speech dotted around the Groom List website so we will not list any here, except to say don’t leave it too late – prepare and practice your speech well in advance and everything will be just fine.

What about the honeymoon? It is the groom who decides and pay for the honeymoon. However in this modern era of working women and shared responsibility both can take up that responsibility. By all means you can drive the discussion and take a lead in making the necessary arrangements; the financial responsibility could be shared if the groom can’t fully afford.

Buying the wedding rings Traditionally men did not take a wedding ring from their wife and so it was up to the groom alone to buy the ring he was to give to his bride. Obviously times have changed somewhat and it is now normal for husbands to take a ring as well. This means that what was once the sole responsibility of the groom has now become a joint exercise – often with the cost split as well. If you do insist on paying for the rings, you should at least give your fiancée the opportunity to be involved in choosing or designing her ring. She will have to wear it for the rest of her life so it might as well be something she likes.

Choosing the Cake: Profile

Chit-chat with Vixx W

edding day is a day of passion so how can you not treat choosing your cake with passion? Getting passionate and personal with our wedding cake demands a passionate and creative cake maker. Let's get personal with the cakes, get personal with the cake maker and get very personal with our wedding cakes on our wedding day. It is that one day your passion over bounds! Vixx cares not only about the choice of cakes, she cares about you too…see how she put s it “Finding your wedding cake is like finding your husband, When you find the right one you stop looking”

How did you get involved with the cake industry? After I left my 8-5 job in the insurance industry I started making cup cakes for fun that Christmas. I took pictures of it and sent it on what's app to my sister who instantly bought them for her friend. I just thought to myself I could make this a business and It's been one cake order after cake order. That's how I got into the industry.

How long have you been in the cake industry and was this your first shot at business? Almost two years now and to the 2nd question, no. I ran Vixx Place, gift shop in Osu for a year before going into the cake business.

What specifically are the services you render to clients? We started with hats and fascinators and then the cakes. Then clients wanted us to cater for their wedding and then they started asking for décor. At Vixx we are a one stop shop because we have your food, décor, fascinators and wedding cakes sorted Name: Victoria Baaba Adusa-Amankwa Name of Business: VIXX Cakes Service Description: Wedding Cakes, Birthday Cakes, Anniversary Cakes, Desserts. 30

What has been the important factor in your business success? God. I couldn't have come this far without Him. I move when He tells me to. He is my Business Partner.

Is wedding planning or cake making your full time job? Yes it is. Vixx is also into hat/fascinator making, decoration and catering services.

What are the latest wedding cake or wedding planning trends? We are seeing more of stacked cakes on top of each other rather than the separated tiers and also cupcake towers being used as wedding cakes. We get a lot of orders for different flavors from red velvet to lemon and coconut cakes.

Which aspect of planning do your groom or bride care about most? The whole ceremony is of great concern to most of them, but like I say everyone is different, some of them want lavish decor setup, others want to look on point and some just want good tasting food and they won’t mind paying for it.

Do you offer different package options or is everything customized based on what couples are looking for? Every order is customized. Our clients get to choose right down to the small details.

How special do you make your customers feel or what will make customers come back to you for an anniversary service? Our excellent customer service and the time we have for each client. No disappointments at all.

VIXX

for the brides who can't make up their mind and keep changing their cake design I have a saying“...finding your wedding cake is like finding your husband, When you find the right the right one you stop searching”

Do you think it is easier when a bride knows exactly what she wants or when she doesn't care about details? Every bride is different, I get brides who tell me to do something nice for them and give me the opportunity to be creative, some of them too have specific designs.

What makes you stand out? Our professionalism and our designs. Very classy and beautiful. Do you offer online services? Yes. One can contact us via our website www.cakesbyvixx.com and clients can also order via our Facebook page www.facebook.com/vixxcakes.

Reasons for cake cutting Did you know that?

Historically the cakes represented fertility, purity and loyalty? The broken cake represented the breaking of the bride's virginity and the headship to be sharing together; Cutting the cake together with her new husband each culture celebrates with some form of cake to honor the bride and groom; it signifies the bond of the married couple to prove that they'll do everything together; Symbolizes commitment to the sweet life the two of you are going to enjoy; Represents the couple's first joint act as husband and wife; The couple's action of feeding each other the first piece represents their desire to care for one another; The wedding cake is traditionally shared amongst guests so that blessing and happiness can be shared.

our wedding day will be one of the most memorable days of your life, with many of the day's special moments captured in pictures for life. Your make-up should enhance your natural beauty, accentuate your confidence and keep you looking flawless throughout the day. Choosing the right products for your desired look on your unforgettable day could be tougher than you think and this is where Professional Makeup Artists like me come in handy. I have had the pleasure of working with various brides for their weddings using various professional makeup brand lines. The outcome has been hugely successful and it is my pleasure to share my top 10 bridal make-up kit picks with you. These are products I turn to regularly on my bridal gigs not necessarily because they are matchless but because I find myself reaching for them again and again. # 1 - MAC Matchmaster SPF15 Foundation: This is a MATCHMASTER from the makeup giant, MAC. You can never go wrong with this foundation. Good bases are everything in makeup application and this will help you achieve that semi-matte finish with an extra protection of SPF15 from the sun. It's easy to work with, apply and blend. Plus the coverage is simply phenomenal. For women of color, their dark skin range is plainly amazing and straight to the point. #2 - MAC Strobe Cream: MAC Strobe Cream is an ultimate quick fix for the skin. It freshens and boosts the appearance of dull flat skin. I often mix this cream with my liquid or cream foundation to give the skin a subtle glow that every bride deserves. The iridescent particles and antioxidants enhance the glowy effect. #3 - Duo Eyelash Glue - Clear: Duo Eyelash Glue is my all-time favorite eyelash glue. It's made solely with the eye in mind. It's quick to dry and easy to remove as well. It last all day when used appropriately on lashes. I personally like the clear ones because they guide me as to where I need to place the lashes. #4 - Eve Pearl Salmon Concealer: Eve Pearl Salmon Concealers are never missing from my gigs kit. Actually, they're correctors to me. It's great for correcting darkness under the eyes, the mouth area and any other hyper pigmented area. It's so creamy and very easy to apply and blend. The pigmentation is awesome. Although it's a bit pricey, I love it and always invest in it for my brides because it works for them. #5 - Real Techniques Buffer Brush: This buffer brush is an incredible tool. It blends powder, cream and liquid product with flair. The bristles are dense and synthetic and this makes buffing so easy without any streaks. It's a staple in my kit. #6 - Yaby Eyeshadows / Pearl Paint Refills: These tiny pots are filled with miracles. These are highly pigmented eyeshadow that are extremely easy to work with. The color range is endless and so with the finishing and textures.

The smooth texture allows easy blending. The Pearl Paint are creamy shadows yet actually powder. These shadows translate true in photography and video. They are my kit saver. #7 - Eve Pearl Dual Performance Lip Palette: Oh how I love this palette. 18 amazing shades ranging from nudes, reds, pinks and brown for all skin tones. This palette is divine and fits all my bridal clients. The lip colors are highly pigmented formula with true color impact. They glide on smoothly and stays put for hours. It's rich in Vitamin E. I just love the slim design of the palette; it fits perfectly in my kit and great for travel. #8 - Red Cherry Lashes: False lashes are a great way to add more class to your wedding look. When used correctly on brides, they open up the eyes and add more glamour and style to any look. These Red Cherry Lashes are designed to create various effects and to naturally accentuate different eye shapes. These 100% human hair lashes come in various natural and glam styles to add instant wink to your eyes. #9 – La Femme Blush in Sienna: Sienna is such an amazing reddish brown color. It adds so much warmth to the face and it's a great blush for women of color. More so I love that fate that it's matte. It's great when used for contouring around the face and also the crease. I simply love it for every look. #10 – Black Opal Invisible Oil Blocking Powder: This is a straight must have powder for all oily skin diva. Although it's beige in color, as applied it blends perfectly into the skin without looking ashy. So let me take the headache of your wow wedding look away and ensure you look and feel yourself on your important day. I am a pro, and this is what I am trained to do….

After the Altar

Living Together By Mr & Mrs. Joe Okyere Mintah

T

o us, there are 3 important landmarks in one's life. The day you are born again, the day you marry and the day you die. If one chooses to marry then it becomes necessary to be aware that marriage marks the central point of your life on this earth because it is the end the end of “single” Christian life and the beginning of “double” Christian life. Your single Christian life will be tested in marriage to show if it really had substance, I mean whether the Christian principle of faith , hope and love have really been grounded in your life. The rest of your life as a Christian will also be generally molded by what you do with your marriage. It is the testing ground for your entire Christian life.

Many Christian marriages are being hit by the waves of strong winds blowing on earth here and being orchestrated by the devil, human failures and other circumstances that may never be fully explained. The issues of money and sex have crossed over from the world into the church bringing in their wake devastating impact on marriages. There are other things such as falsehood, deceit and the astatine of a Sodom and Gomorrah world visitation. In order to take a full advantage of the opportunities that are available to us by the grace of God, for the “after the altar” period , the following are worth considering. •Marriage is a school of God.

In view of the above submission, the altar then has two sides which are of equal importance.,Before the altar and after the altar.

•You never graduate until death do you part. •No human being is qualified to put you asunder.

It has become clear to us from our encounter with young couples that, if the “BEFORE” is not well handled the “AFTER” could become problematic. It is important that pre-marriage counseling be done painstakingly. It should not be rushed through, and the prospective couple must understand that they are about to undertake a journey which is both spiritual and physical. They should be adequately informed and prepared for both. It should not be lost on them that marriage like Christianity is of God's making and anyone who partakes of it is partaking of the divine and because it is being practiced by we humans there is also the physical side. The marriage vows are spiritual undertaking and would be implemented physically. So it goes without saying that the mystery of marriage where two become one is as fascinating as the mystery of Christ himself. Therefore he who partakes of it unworthily does so to bring damnation into him/herself. In spite of the above, however, it is worth noting that, the After or post marriage problems can also be handled through the grace of God.

34

•God hates divorce. •Divorce can therefore never be a solution. It is a distraction. •You are not a zebra or a leopard which cannot change the spots or lines in its skin colour. So as a human being created in the image of God you can change your ways and always become better. It means that if we are patient enough to allow God to work on us, we can stay in our marriages. •Your partner is you. You have strengths and weaknesses. So just as you focus on your strengths and weaknesses, so does your partner, so just as you focus on your strengths and not your weakness, focus on the strengths of your partner for this is the pattern of marriage between Christ and the Church. Conclusion In our subsequent writing, we shall consider one at a time some of the problems that keep arising after the Altar and attempt to suggest some solutions for discussion.

The beauty of pregnancy and birth By Wendy Phillis Would you love to feel like a pampered goddess, knowing that every step of your journey through pregnancy and giving birth, you will know what to do, to ensure that this beautiful phase is one of the most special and treasured times in your life? Would you love to connect with and know your baby intimately before birth? Would you love to experience a deep loving connection with your unborn child, know them personally, their nature, what they love and develop a loving heart felt relationship with them before they are born? Would you love to have tools that will make your journey of parenting easier? Would you love to access your inner wisdom to guide you on this journey of pregnancy, birth and being a parent? Oh what a glorious and beautiful time! During this time we can experience the exquisite beauty and joy of being a woman, expressing our femininity, appreciating and thoroughly enjoying our amazing feminine bodies. Pregnancy and Birth can be a time of joy, elation, fun and heart felt love. Every woman innately knows how to nurture and birth her children. Yet, in our society today we sometimes don't have that experience. Pregnancy and birth can become a very clinical time, where we don't trust our intuition and our bodies to gently guide and lead us thru this journey. How can we “know” what is true and right for us during this time? How can we trust our bodies and ourselves to birth life? Our feminine intuition and inner wisdom knows everything to guide us through every part of this journey. Using our intuition we can connect with our unborn children to “know” them intimately and access their wisdom along this journey and create truth from their perspective. They can be recognized as a wise soul. A newborn child is like a blank page and having a new baby can be a daunting experience. You don't know how they want to sleep, what will comfort them, what their likes and dislikes are, it can be a fraught time for parents and child. However, if you are able to use your intuition, you can connect with your child before birth, they can inform you about themselves also your intuition will guide you every step of this journey. In the course you will come to know about who you really are, your special gifts and abilities, then you are well on your way to enjoying this beautiful new life together, as a wise, loving and connected family.

38

How can you fully enjoy your pregnancy, time of birth and beyond? •Experience the joy and wonder and the miracle of birth, rather than experiencing fear of the “unknown” in this time. •Connect with your inner wisdom to guide you to what is true in relation to your pregnancy and birth. •Develop a strong connection with your unborn child. •Connect with your female body, open up and experience the amazing changes your body goes thru, in a very feminine way. •Create the pregnancy and birthing experience that you as the mother, your partner and the unborn baby want.

Financial Independence ...the Christ Way “…then you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received my money back with interest” Jesus Christ (LK 15:27)

T

he above quotation from the parable of talents, tells us that, Christ was not unaware of the role of financial prudence and its essence in a believer's life. To borrow a thought from my fourth and soon to be launched book. “Cracking the Secret code to financial independence” I discuss the two paradigms associated with financial independence in the life of today's Christian. In the book, we (my wife and I) argue that there are two major paradigms as far as wealth creation in the Christendom is concerned. The first is the “Abrahamic paradigm” and the second; “Lazuroic Paradigm”. The former postulates that, most Christians believe a Christian must be financially prosperous even if he/she will make it to heaven just like Father Abraham was. The latter also suggests that, it is best to be poor if not very poor just like Lazarus, so that a Christian can make it to heaven, without any challenge or difficulty. In discussing financial independence the Christ like way, I will want to argue that, becoming financially independent and financially prosperous is a must today in our walk with God, and that it is no more an option. “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that you through his poverty might be rich - 2cor 8:9” The explanation is that, Christ is quoted in 2Corinthians8:9 as becoming poor so that through His poverty we (today's Christian) also could become rich. The implication then is that, as far as heaven is concerned, nobody is permitted to be poor, because Christ had already dealt with poverty and exchanged that for wealth on our behalf. Becoming poor then means “we could be causing financial loss to the blood of the lamb”! Is that not amazing? So what must be done? Something must change! What must Change is our understanding of money and financial independence. The status quo must change! 40

1. Money is a potential employee and not just a medium of exchange. Money can work! In other words we must learn to let money work for us, instead of just working for money. So why don't we add to our income stream the channel of “money working for us” in addition to the status quo fo working for money? 2. Financial independence is possible. It is not farfetched. In fact independence simply means; having the financial muscle or ability to adequately cater for the basic needs of life without ·•Having financial investments that will be adequate to maintain your quality of life during even after retirement, so that your standard of living gets better and not worst. ·•Having reserves or contingency funds equal to more than six months of your salary, to take care of any emergency just in case. With the above understanding, the next thing we would need to know and do as Christians in order to be financially independent, will be to take critical and decisive steps about money and wealth. Step One: Decide and desire to be Rich “… the desires of the righteous shall never be cut short …” Proverbs 11:23 The only difference between the rich, and the poor in my opinion is the desires they harbor or entertain, and the words that are constantly repeated in their conversation. As believers the words we speak and the words we think ultimately become the world we create for ourselves, particularly when it has to do with money and financial matters. John 1:14, says; “And the word became flesh”. Ultimately it would mean that expressions like; “I don't have money”,“I cannot afford it” and the like must be reversed. The reason is that People who use words that focus on financial survival and the scarcity mentality normally are “poor” people, because they also become poor managers of money. So a person who thinks or speaks negative words about money and wealth is likely to be constantly fighting for financial survival, regardless of how much money he or she will make. So decide and desire to be rich beginning from now, even if you are broke and penniless today. Poverty is a state of mind. Thoughts such as “I can afford”, “it is not expensive”, “I am not poor” etc, come from those who desire to be rich.
