“Architecture should speak of it’s time and place, but yearn for timelessness.”

Frank Gehry

Charette Along Old Hope Road

@ 18.017459, -76.754127

The aim of this project, was to design a bus-shelter for a bus stop along the Old Hope Road stretch. This shelter needed to address the climatic and other conditions found on site. The most challenging thing about this project was the fact the we had to work as a group to create one design. The structure has a volume of 20m3 and is constructed from a lightweight steel frame, wooden louvres, waterproof canvas roofing and concrete.

Kindergarten and Homework Center Elletson Flats, Mona, Kingston @18.006618, -76.738219 In this project I was asked to design a place that would facilitate and encourage learning for early education and primary school students. The facility would serve as both a kindergarten during the day and a homework centre in the afternoon. The thing I found most challenging, was placement of windows and rooms for maximum view of the mountains and the surroundings. Working with the slope was very enjoyable. I was able to create a low lying structure that nestles into the landscape.

Rural Shelter Site 4 Blue Hole/ White River Valley, Ocho Rios, St. Ann 18.372602, -77.052840

I was asked to design and detail a shelter for sleeping and observation. This shelter was to be placed in beautiful W h i t e R i v e r Va l l e y, S t . A n n . T h i s s h e l t e r n e e d t o b e s u s t a i n a b l e , temporary and self-sufficient. My shelter is made primarily of timber with metal brackets and plates to connect them. My aims for this project are to connect both sides of the bank, to allow persons to experience the beauty of the river without having to go in. I did so by designing a retractable rope bridge. I think my shelter sits perfectly in this setting. This rich wooden cabin blends into lush bamboo clusters and the large trees surrounding it.

Live / Work Family C

East Street, Downtown, Kingston,Jamaica 17.975136, -76.789566 I was asked to design a home business that would be located in Downtown Kingston, adjacent to the Shaare Shalom Jewish Synagogue and the Kingston Seventh Day Baptist Church. The site is located in the heart of a historically rich area. The family I was given was a young couple with a small child. The mother is a music teacher at a nearby school, but she would like to teach students from home. For my design, I choose to separate my studio from the main house and create a sunken amphitheatre in the middle of the garden. I also tried to take some design cues from neighbouring building. I also chose to have a dynamic roof that expresses the music that would be taught there. My biggest challenge for this project was trying to marry the rest of the structure with t h e d y n a m i c r o o f. I w o u l d s a y t h a t I h a v e s u c c e s s f u l l y d e s i g n e d a s t r u c t u r e t h a t n o t o n l y sits well in its context, but it is also a quiet retreat from the busy neighbourhood.
