PROPOSAL: Social events for Doornakkers on initiative of NeRu Citylab project | November 2012

INTRO

The Doornakkers social project was initiated by the NeRu Citylab Collaboration, the project of Brabant Academy. Now Doornakkers is a “backward” district of Eindhoven. The active social policy in this district has been already initiated by the partnership of the municipality of Eindhoven and Lively Cities”, the European platform that deals with “reclaiming public spaces for public use”. For example the project “Social Sofa” was realized this year. In current project the work in this direction could be continued. The main goal of Doornakkers project is to turn the area of district into a well-used space that will benefit the local community and the city area in general. This general idea could be realized by solving series of more particular tasks in a form of different events that would promote the concept of ‘reuse’, neighborhood collaboration, common work and international cooperation. In a role of such events could be various placemaking workshops, common cooking and gardening, etc. The results of such common work could be used as street art-objects, exterior and interior sculptures. The first step towards reclaiming public

spaces of Doornakkers into public use could be realized in the workshop for children from Doornakkers schools that offers the opportunity to build small model of their neighborhood with tiny houses on the map. The “pilot” event has already taken place during Dutch Design Week in frames of Brabant Biennale. The good experience could be improved during next step, in following workshop. Such kind of first steps have a potential to grow to more complex projects, involving more different kind of people and orientated to further developing public spaces in Doornakkers. For example as a third step could be the “furniture” workshop: creating objects for public spaces from different left-over things: basically old furniture that everybody could bring. As participants could be all the people from the neighborhood of different ages: from 10 till 70. Especially this project could be interesting for visitors of the wood and metal workshops (“55+ Club”). The Doornakkers project can become a unique experience both for “Lively Cities” and Municipality of the city Eindhoven when foreign students promote and realize such kind of social design projects and also for students themselves. These

results of international NeRu Citylab Collaboration that could be formed during work on this project would become a great illustration for the Russian-Dutch Cultural Year 2013.

THE CITY OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD

6

PROPOSAL: Social events for Doornakkers on initiative of NeRu Citylab project | November 2012

It is very important to maintain the connections between people in each district of the city. When people do something together for their neighborhood, their private space becomes wider. It includes not only their house and their yard but also public spaces in the neighborhood. Creating of these connections between families can really work out a new friendly atmosphere in the district and afterwards the general development of the area. Event To invite the citizens of Doornakkers and offer them the opportunity to make small models of their houses and put it on the map of the neighborhood.

Result This type of social activities will help people to feel the community of their neighborhood, get acquainted to their neighbors. So, first they come to make their house and put it on the map, which means their positioning in Doornakkers. After that they are ready to think wider, to become aware of what’s going on around in the area. They are ready to think how they can influence the life in the neighborhood and what can they do today to make their district better, more attractive and more “alive” tomorrow. No doubts, it will bring a lot of fun to children, and also will let the grown-ups to remember their childhood!

The models of houses could be made of pre-fabricated materials: wooden cubes and plywood pieces for roofs, which could be glued or nailed. Children, or even grown-ups, can paint their models with acrylic colors the way they would like to. It can be also possible to suggest the guests of this event to make the trees of dried branches, paint them and decorate the area around or create some parks on the map of neighborhood.

FURNITURE PROJECT

FURNITURE PROJECT

The Doo(eu)rnakkers “furniture project” is a doubled project that consists of two workshops. It gives different people from the neighborhood the opportunity to create artobjects and installations made of old furniture. The first workshop could have deal with doors, the second one – with chairs.

The word “door” (“een deur” in Dutch) gave a name to this project and became a symbol of it. This object “hides” in the name of the district, “DOORnakkers”, and it so fits the idea of friendly neighborhood. Moreover, the door could be read as a symbol of neighborhood hospitality,

of border between a private area (house) and a public space (street). And this is the main concept of general Doornakkers social project, it could be perfectly shown in this two projects. So the door installation could be situated

in a public area that is open to everybody: a little square in the neighborhood would be perfect. All the doors could be installed on one line that would be organized the path everybody can follow opening the doors one by one. The door frames make the installation safe, so even children can be involved in this process. The paths and door frames could be done with mosaic; it would help to make an integral ensemble. During workshop the people of different ages could be involved in realizing this project. Children and their parents can paint the doors, teenagers can make a mosaic, adults from “55+ Club” can make door frames. Another “furniture” workshop deals with

old, left-over chairs. The concept is to connect “individual” chairs into “common” bench. This project actually promotes the idea of reuse, of giving a new life to old objects. Also the placemaking concept is represented in it. Such common made benches help to solve a problem of a lack of benches in the district e.g. the problem of public spaces revival. In realization of this project also could be involved every person from the district. As in the previous workshop here children could paint chairs and adults could help them.

CHAIR

The results of these two workshops could be installed at the same place. Thus square project would be a perfect illustration of the neighborhood cooperation and the common placemaking.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT: Out-of-the-Box IDEAS

P R I M E R

I N T E R E S T It’s a well-known fact that improving life is a time-oriented process. As for Doornakkers in its further development we have the idea of creating particular series of steps pointed at improving social climate of the district in a most effective way. These steps are some kind of “out of a box” ideas. They are based on interactivity or so called “everyday influence” on people and their attitude to what’s going on around. Proceedings of communication with different means all over the district not just only in its particular places will create some kind of internal information landscape of Doornakkers and also will strongly contribute to further improving of district’s social life.

S I G N S The idea is to create information landscape by means of urban equipment: signs, boards, titles and social events as well. Feedback will be realised with the help of social networks, websites and forums. This is how physical and virtual networks will be made to support permanent interest of inhabitants.

CALENDAR In Doornakkers there is one public space where the process of reclaiming has been already started. It is the little square near De Boog School where the Social sofa was installed. All the Doornakkers projects could be realized in this place too.

The preparation for the Winter Festival could be the first step in this big project realization. This festival will take place in Doornakkers, near De Boog School on the 13th of December. Boring street tiles could be decorated with mosaic; colorful paths all over the square could make a holiday mood. A fence could decorated with branch painted and winded round with colored thread. Benches made with old chare could become the bright feature of the holiday square. Winter Festival is a perfect reason to realize the projects during winter time, but in spring there will be much more opportunities to continue the realization of other projects too (for example,door-project).
